GOOD FRIDAY Good Friday commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Jesus was condemned by his peers as King Herod and Pontius Pilate had found him not guilty of his crimes. But crowds were enraged, and Pilate reluctantly ordered his crucifixion rather than face a mass riot.

We are not to judge thrift solely by the test of saving or spending. If one spends what he should prudently save, that certainly is to be deplored. But if one saves what he should prudently spend, that is not necessarily to be commended. A wise balance between the two is the desired end. ~Owen Young

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Serotonin Syndrome Affects Mood, Muscles DEAR DR. ROACH: After being on Paxil for about 15 years, it wasn’t working anymore. My doctor decreased my dose, and I slowly started Viibryd. The first week I felt great. When I increased the dose of Viibryd, I began feeling sick. I had a bad headache, anxiety and couldn’t sleep, and my muscles began jerking. I went to the doctor, and she had me stop immediately, prescribed Deplin for seven days, and said that I’d had serotonin syndrome. When I looked it up, I found it can be fatal if the SSRI is not stopped. I was off all SSRIs for about 10 days but started feeling unconfident and fragile, so I began taking 25 mg of Paxil CR. My doctor seemed concerned that the serotonin syndrome could return, and advised me to take Deplin along with the Paxil. How common is this syndrome? I am weaning myself off the Paxil, but what if I need an antidepressant? -- M.M. ANSWER: Serotonin syndrome is more common than often is suspected. It is an abnormality of brain chemistry caused most often by medications, especially selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), like paroxetine (Paxil) and vilazodone (Viibryd). You had many symptoms of serotonin syndrome. Serotonin syndrome may consist of mood changes such as anxiety and restlessness, but a person may develop confusion and disorientation. Abnormalities of the muscles, such as rigidity and the uncontrollable jerking you mention, are very common. Finally, sweating, high body temperature, vomiting and diarrhea also may be part of the syndrome. Treatment is stopping the medication that caused the symptoms. Many experienced practitioners will use the same or similar medications that caused the serotonin syndrome at a lower dose if it is the only effective treatment, but this requires expertise and careful monitoring. Deplin, a brand of methylfolate, is a B-type vitamin that can make SSRIs work better. It’s not associated with serotonin syndrome, as far as I have been able to find. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: A diagnosis of “Cameron erosions of the esophagus” was made after my gastroscopy. I was not able to find that term at nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus. Have you ever heard of this? -- A.M. ANSWER: To be honest, no. However, I did look it up, and found that Cameron erosions are found only in people with a hiatal hernia. A hiatal hernia isn’t like an umbilical or groin hernia; in a hiatal hernia, the stomach goes upward into the chest through the diaphragm, the sheet of muscle that separates your chest from your abdomen. It is our primary muscle for breathing. There normally is a hole in the diaphragm (the hiatus), but in a hiatal hernia, the structures that hold the stomach in place weaken and allow it to go into the chest. The part of the stomach inside the chest is prone to bleeding, and the areas that bleed can be seen by the endoscope and are called Cameron erosions, or ulcers. Small hiatal hernias usually can be managed with medication as necessary. However, large hernias and those with a history of bleeding may require surgical repair. An expert is needed to decide whether surgery is required. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Avoid aches and pains when gardening People who have not spent much time in a garden may not consider this rewarding hobby much of a threat to their health. But as veteran gardeners can attest, gardening can contribute to nagging aches and pains that can force even the most ardent green-thumbers indoors. Gardening is a physical activity that, despite its peaceful nature, can be demanding on the body. Thankfully, there are several ways that gardening enthusiasts can prevent the aches and pains that can sometimes pop up after long days in the garden. · Use ergonomic gardening tools. Ergonomic gardening tools are designed to prevent the types of aches, pains and injuries that can cut gardeners’ seasons short. Gardening injuries can affect any area of the body, but injuries or aches and pains affecting the back, wrists and hands are among the most common physical problems gardeners endure. Look for ergonomic tools that reduce the strain on these areas of the body. Even arthritis sufferers who love to garden may find that ergonomic tools make it possible for them to spend more time in their gardens without increasing their risk for injury. · Alternate tasks. Repetitive-strain injuries can affect gardeners who spend long periods of time performing the same activity in their gardens. By alternating tasks during gardening sessions, gardeners can reduce their risk of suffering repetitive strain injuries. Alternate tasks not just on muscle groups worked, but also level of difficulty. Remember to include some simple jobs even on busy gardening days so the body gets a break. · Take frequent breaks. Frequent breaks can help combat the stiffness and muscle aches that may not appear until gardeners

finish their gardening sessions. Breaks help to alleviate muscles or joints that can become overtaxed when gardening for long, uninterrupted periods of time. When leaning down or working on your hands and knees, stand up to take breaks every 20 minutes or the moment aches and pains start to make their presence felt. · Maintain good posture. Back injuries have a tendency to linger, which can keep gardeners indoors and out of their gardens. When gardening, maintain good posture to prevent back injuries. Gardening back braces can protect the back by providing support and making it easier for gardeners to maintain their posture. Tool pouches attached to gardening stools or chairs also can be less taxing on the back than gardening belts tied around the waist. Gardening might not be a contact sport, but it can cause pain if gardeners do not take steps to prevent the onset of muscle aches and strains when spending time in their gardens.

Professional Women of the Finger Lakes Announce Annual Women of Distinction Event By Ellen Martin

Professional Women of the Finger Lakes have announced their annual Women of Distinction event to be held on May 3rd at the Inn on the Lake in Canandaigua. The event recognizes outstanding women in the categories of Professional Achievement, Entrepreneurial, Volunteer Service, Women Helping Women and Outstanding Youth. Olympic Gold medalist Megan Musnicki will be the keynote speaker for the event. Musnicki is a two-time Olympic champion as a member of the women’s eight rowing team in both 2012 and 2016. “The Women of Distinction Event recognizes outstanding women who contribute to their professional and volunteer organizations,” said event committee co-chair Rhonda Vaccaro. “It’s always an inspiring night.” Proceeds from the event support the Professional Women of the Finger Lakes Scholarship program, supporting local women and High School students for nearly fifty years. Scholarships range from $500 to $1,000 and have topped $80,000 in the last ten years. “The adult women learners are really the heart and soul of our work,” said Scholarship Committee Co-chair Amy Morrisey. “These range from women who stayed home to raise their families to those who experienced difficult times in their lives and are not what you would consider traditional students. Supporting these women as they return to school and continue their education is inspiring to see.”

Professional Women of the Finger Lakes have been active in the community since the 1950’s, when they were first founded as the Canandaigua Chapter of Business and Professional Women. The group expanded to include the entire Finger Lakes region and changed their name in 2010. Today’s membership includes over fifty women who are business leaders, volunteers and philanthropists in their communities. Goals of the group include networking, professional development, community involvement, and work-life balance. Events are held monthly and include networking events, professional development seminars, and social events. Membership is open to all women in the Finger Lakes region- regardless of work status. For more information on Professional Women of the Finger Lakes and the scholarship program, please visit their website www.pwflnys.org.

I want all those who have worked tirelessly in the severe weather to restore power, those keeping the roads clear as possible, those Emergency and 1st responders having to risk their lives to help others to know your efforts are not unnoticed. You are very much appreciated. Truly owed a big debt of gratitude. Well done and may you be truly Blessed. Hope after all this a little extra rest. Thank you to the Bloomfield Town Workers who put the snow fence up on Route 444/Victor Holcomb Rd every year. The snow fence makes a huge difference when it is snowing and blowing. Went to breakfast at T’s Family Restaurant in Webster recently. Waiting for waitress to bring our bill, she said do you know that lady who just left in this booth? We did not; she asks if we are sure, yes we do not know her, she told us that she had paid for our breakfast. What a wonderful

surprise, have heard that people do this type of thing, but never have experienced it. Thank you so much, and we hope you and your granddaughter had a wonderful day too. We too will pass it on to someone. During the bad weather the last few weeks, I was blessed with caring family, great neighbors and concerned friends. I want to say “Thank You” for ALL you did and for being there. They say you can’t choose anyone to be your relative, friends or neighbors - but I wouldn’t change anyone! Thank You! Kitty Englert West Henrietta Last night my doorbell rang and (to my delight) it wasn’t someone selling roof repair or tree removal service. It was a local Fairport Village Brownie Girl Scout, taking orders for cookies. Instead of placing an order, I made a cash donation on the spot. Later, I discovered a package of (delicious) ‘Thank You’ cookies in my mailbox! What a refreshing and welcome surprise! I did not get the Scout’s name, but I wish I could thank her personally for delivering something more scrumptious than cookies that day! Kudos to The Girl Scouts organization for encouraging the practice, and instilling the value of appreciation in their youngsters.

For those who use [local roads] as a pass through, please slow down. The speed limit is 40 MPH, not 50 or above. This is a residential street and not a speed way. Many residents walk, jog and walk their dogs on this road. It is also getting dangerous to even cross the road so we can get our mail. It boils down to inconsiderate motor vehicle operators. There is also a stop sign. This means that you stop and not drive through it. Use common sense. Maybe it is time we have the County Sheriffs sit in our driveways and give you tickets, so you are even later to wherever, you are headed. If you hit someone, they could lose their life. SLOW DOWN and be CONSIDERATE. To the pizza complaint, contact your local BBB bureau and eat elsewhere. To the stolen lawn mower complaint: it’s not elder abuse. Things get stolen from people any age. Bottom line if you don’t want your stuff stolen, lock it up. If you had a garage sale, box things up and lock your mower up. I don’t

To the person who got what looks like chocolate on the Jayne Ann Krentz Book, Illusion Town. I took the book out after you and ended up having to pay your fine for the damage. It would be nice if you would donate $40 to the Public Library. Regarding Vent about Elevator and Weight the person is OLDER. When people get older, they say things like that. If the person is old cut some slack. It also says judge not lest you be judged. You don’t know who will make it and who won’t, so you yourself stop judging. The problem is people get offended at the littlest things. Only you can decide whether to let it roll off your back or make an issue of it. I think there are more important things in this world that deserves to be angry about. I have a weight problem, if someone says something I don’t come down to their level and have to retort back. By letting it go, I forgive. So you need to forgive this person and show some mercy.

THE RIGHT WAY TO UPDATE A RÉSUMÉ Put your own voice in the résumé. Rather than using standard verbiage on your résumé, personalize what you want to say. Hiring managers want to hire a human, not a machine. When speaking about yourself, be sure to use strong action words that define your skills even further. HR professionals cite terms like “managed,” “achieved” and “improved” as examples of positive, assertive words.

Successfully Fend Off Workplace Fatigue Hit the road, Jack. Another w ay to effectively fight fatigue is to get w alking. A decades-old study conducted by a researcher at California State University, Long Beach, found that w alking briskly for 10 minutes p rovides people w ith more energy than eating a candy bar. Though the candy bar led to an initial energy boost , that boost died dow n w ithin an hour, w hereas the boost provided by a brisk w alk increased energy levels f or roughly tw o hours. Get up and w alk around the office or take a brisk w alk around the block or the pa rking lot of your office complex. You’ll come back to your desk refreshed and ready to resume your w orkday.

Carolina Eastern Crocker, LLC www.cecrocker.com THE RIGHT WAYS TO UPDATE A RÉSUMÉ The job market can be competitive, as new graduates flood the field each and every year. But graduation season is not the only time of year when the competition to find work gets heated. The start of the new year tends to be one of the busiest times of year for new hires. According to the employment resource Simply Hired, the first Monday after New Year’s Day tends to be the busiest day for job search activity. Companies are returning to full production after the holidays, and as a result there is a flurry of new activity. This means applicants can use the last quarter of the year to prepare for job searches they will institute once the calendar turns. Many job seekers may benefit from revamping their résumés before beginning their search. It’s not uncommon for recruiters to receive thousands of résumés for each job opening they post, and the sheer volume of applicants can make it difficult for job seekers to get their résumés seen. In such instances, job seekers must take steps to tip the odds in their favor.
