PREPARE YOUR LAWN & GARDEN FOR WINTER Remove annuals from the garden. Annuals won’t be coming back in spring, so it’s best to remove ones that are no longer producing from the garden before the arrival of winter. Chet Fery, "The Bread Man" came to St. Mary's in Honeoye to share his bread-time stories, humor, and fresh home baked bread for everyone's pleasure. And the wonderful parishioners of St. Mary's provided a delicious breakfast for participants. What a delightful morning! The message of the Breadman is that the world needs, now more than ever, acts and words of kindness. Thank you Chet Fery and the parishioners of St. Mary's for your kindness and for demonstrating that an act and a word of kindness feeds and inspires another.

To The Non-All Star Baseball Parent: A Couple of Points - 1. Stop Always Complaining and Stand Up To The Plate and Be A Coach some time. 2. There are no perfect teams, and life, unfortunately, will never be fair, but a team is a family. Maybe it is your negative complaining attitude that prevented your child from making the team. Coaches do not get paid, and put a lot of dedication into their teams. Constant negative parent pressure doesn’t create a family atmosphere. 3. Think about your actions and how they reflect on your children. 4. Your Learn about the causes of adult hearing loss Hearing loss is quite common and can impact people’s lives in profound ways. Although there are some treatments that can improve one’s ability to hear and communicate, many people are interested in learning about the ways they may be able to prevent hearing loss in the first place. Medical experts from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association advise that hearing loss can be caused by different factors. Learning about these causes can help individuals make smart decisions at a young age to prevent future hearing loss when possible. In certain circumstances, hearing loss may be unavoidable. In such instances, audiologists, or doctors specializing in hearing, can help. Conductive hearing loss: Conductive hearing loss refers to problems with the ear canal, ear drum or middle ear and its bones, states the Hearing Loss Association of America. Some of the causes of conductive hearing loss include: • Otitis media is an infection of the middle ear in which fluid accumulation can interfere with the movement of the eardrum and ossicles. • Impacted earwax also can cause hearing problems. • Fluid in the middle ear may obstruct hearing. • Otosclerosis, which is a middle ear disease, can make it difficult for the tiny bones in the middle ear to move. Surgery can correct the problem. • Malformation of the outer ear, ear canal or middle ear structure can impact hearing as well. Sensorineural hearing loss: Sensorineural hearing loss, or SNHL, occurs due to problems of the inner ear. It is often referred to as nerve-related hearing loss. • Aging is a common cause of hearing loss that may not be reversible. Age-related hearing loss is called presbycusis and is marked by muffled or unclear speech. Treatment with assistive hearing devices can help improve hearing. • Trauma to the ear or head may impact hearing. Wearing protective gear during sports or other activities can protect against neurological damage that may cause hearing loss.
By learning about what impacts hearing loss, people can make changes to prevent damage.
• Damage to the inner ear can result from prolonged exposure to loud noises, states the Mayo Clinic. These noises cause wear and tear on the hairs or nerve cells in the cochlea that send sound signals to the brain. When these hairs or nerve cells are damaged or missing, electrical signals aren’t transmitted as efficiently, and hearing loss occurs. Using hearing protection and turning down the volume can help. • Ménière’s disease is an inner ear problem of unknown origins. It usually starts in people between the ages of 30 and 50. Dizziness and ringing of the ear are common, and hearing loss comes and goes. Some loss can become permanent. • Viruses and diseases as well as family history also may play a role in SNHL. In some instances, hearing loss may be the result of a combination of factors. Anyone finding their hearing has become less acute should visit with an audiologist. One resource to visit is www.asha.org/profind. The doctor can then prescribe a treatment plan to help improve hearing.

Dress for Success: Empowering Women for Workplace Success By: Amanda Dudek Very little is as disheartening as entering an interview or a workplace feeling poorly dressed. Despite preparation, education and experience, a woman who has an inadequate wardrobe can often be overlooked for positions or promotions. Unfortunately, many women do not have the means to buy several professional outfits. This is exactly where Dress for Success comes in. Dress for Success focuses on professional attire for women, hence their saying, “Sometimes the first door to open is the one to the closet.” However, that is by no means the only support they offer. Once a woman, or client, demonstrates a willingness and readiness to work, that client can be scheduled for a␣First Impressions␣session. The professional, private, individual appointment minimizes any embarrassment the client may have felt in asking for help. Each woman is offered professional, interview-appropriate attire, a consultation, resumé assistance and a mock interview as well as job search coaching. The client, a woman now dressed for success, leaves her appointment well-prepared for the interviews she faces. Dress for Success also offers Career Center Support in which women receive a postinterview follow-up, continuing job search assistance and workforce development training. For hired clients, Dress for Success offers a␣WorkIt! Consultation␣during which a consultant works with the client to create a six-piece, career-appropriate starter wardrobe and offers mentoring as the client navigates the new workplace. Dress for Success further offers HOPE Training which is focused on employee retention as well as connection to the Professional Women’s Group which provides an opportunity to network with other professional women. Dress for Success is able to do all of this through the work of volunteers and the donations from those who care about the women in their communities. Dress for Success was founded in 1996, and it has now grown to include 145 affiliates in 20 cities across the globe. In 2015, Alyssa Whitfield founded Dress for Success Rochester. Ms. Whitfield always had a love for fashion and decided to marry it with her active volunteer

life in which she was already helping women find meaningful work. It took time to get the license for the non-profit, but this was only part of the struggle. She still needed volunteers to make her dream a reality. “I began grabbing women on the street who had great outfits,” she laughed. She would ask these women if they would be willing to help. Ultimately, 13 women said yes. Ms. Whitfield introduced one such volunteer, Emily, a kind and fashion-savvy consultant, who was the Dress for Success 2017 Volunteer of the Year. At that time, Emily had already helped 80-90 women with clothing and career support. She helps clients know what people who are hiring are thinking, teaches women not to sabotage themselves, creates and polishes their resumés, conducts mock interviews and provides job coaching. Emily’s brilliant smile says that, to her, it is all worth it. Still, there is great need. Women are assisted all over the greater Rochester area, coming from as far away as Wayland. Gentlyused, nearly-new, professional attire is always needed, particularly in petite and plus sizes such as sizes 18-30+. One business that has an excellent partnership with the Rochester location is Talbot’s of Pittsford. Importantly, according to Alyssa Whitfield, what is raised here stays here. Also, Talbots accepts collections for Dress for Success twice a year. Donations can be given directly to Dress for Success, as well. Donating to Dress for Success is supporting women in our communities. For more information, visit␣ file:///C:/Users/amandad/Downloads/ rochester.dressforsuccess.org. Try Baking Soda for Underarm Odor --DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 77-year-old female. I had a leftbreast lumpectomy (with some lymph nodes removed) about 15 years ago, leaving me with a much heavier right breast. I don’t know whether this plays an important role with my problem. Since the surgery, I have had a problem controlling underarm odor. I do not use any aluminum-based products. I have tried vinegar, milk of magnesia and a deodorant made from milk of magnesia. Within a matter of just a few hours, I notice quite an odor, particularly in my right armpit, which gets worse as the day goes on. I do not perspire profusely, but do develop some underarm moisture. Can you think of any reason this is happening, or any remedy that might work for me? I would appreciate your comments. -- D.M.M. ANSWER: I would start by trying a non-antiperspirant deodorant. These are not aluminum-based and work well for most people. If the deodorant doesn’t work, you should consider another oldfashioned remedy that you haven’t tried: baking soda. It changes the pH of the armpit and helps to keep it dry, and both of those things help get rid of odor. Underarm odor is caused by bacteria that live on our skin; the sweat itself is odorless. Thus, if you get rid of the bacteria, you can get rid of the odor. I have prescribed topical antibiotics on occasion. Some people have told me that an alcohol-based handsanitizing gel helps. It might be that it dries out the skin and also kills bacteria. I would be cautious about overusing this as a solution. The underarm is a sensitive area that can get irritated. I’d be happy to hear from readers about other solutions for this common problem, and I will report back on the most successful methods. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have severe halitosis. I have had my sinuses, teeth and gums checked to see if they are the cause of the odor, but the dentist and ENT found nothing. I was referred by my primary doctor to a G.I. specialist, who found I had a sliding hiatal hernia, which was causing acid reflux. He recommended surgery to push the stomach back into its normal position below the diaphragm. I decided to pass on the surgery. He recommended taking over-the-counter medications such as Nexium, but after several days my lower back started to hurt, so I stopped taking them. I am reconsidering the surgery and was wondering if this is a good idea. Is it possible that the hernia has nothing to do with the halitosis? -- E.H. ANSWER: Experts believe that 90 percent of the time, halitosis comes from the mouth. What your gastroenterologist is suggesting as the cause of the halitosis is plausible. I found several anecdotal cases where surgery cured the halitosis. However, it’s not only possible that the hiatal hernia has nothing to do with the halitosis, I think it is unlikely that it does. Since surgery would not otherwise be recommended for a sliding hiatal hernia, I can’t recommend surgery. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. H O R O SC O P E ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Aspects favor new romances for unpaired Ewes and Rams. Alreadypaired Arian twosomes experience renewed harmony in their relationships. Money matters also take a bright turn. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Use that strong Bovine determination to help you keep the faith with your convictions while you move through a period of uncertainty. Things begin to ease by the week’s end. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Pay attention to your intuition. It could be alerting you to be more careful about accepting a “statement of fact” simply on trust. Don’t be shy about asking for more proof. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Concern for the well-being of someone in need is admirable. But don’t forget to take care of yourself as well. Ask a family member, close friend or colleague to help you. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) It’s OK to focus on the demands of your career. But try to avoid misunderstandings by also reaching out to family and friends. Your sharp intuitive sense kicks in by midweek. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Keep a rein on that green-eyed monster. Jealousy is counterproductive. Instead of resenting a colleague’s good points, concentrate on developing your own abilities. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Spending time on a creative project during this high-energy week can pay off both in emotional satisfaction and in impressing someone who is glad to see this side of you. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Now is a good time to start planning that trip you’ve put off because of the demands on your time. Be sure to choose a destination that is new and exciting. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) That upbeat mood in the first part of the week makes you eager to take on new ventures. A more serious note sets in later to help you assess an upcoming decision. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A high energy level gives the Goat the get-up-and-go to finish outstanding tasks before deadline, leaving time for well-earned fun and games with friends and family. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) Dealing with disappointment is never easy. But the wise Aquarian will use it as a vital lesson and be the better for it. A close friend has something important to say. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Best bet is not to get involved in an argument between colleagues until you know more about who started it and why. And even then, appearances could be deceiving. Be alert. BORN THIS WEEK: You have creative gifts that inspire those who get to see this sometimes-hidden side of you.
