Honey is nature’s sweet nectar. While honey certainly can add flavor to various recipes or be enjoyed straight out of the jar, it has many other surprising benefits as well. Used since ancient times as both a food and for medicinal purposes, honey can make for a versatile addition to anyone’s diet.

“Let us review your current fees and offer you the BEST pricing.”
“Hello, I’m Gary. I was found as a stray five years ago, and given to my owners, knowing they would take good care of me. My owners call me a “gentle giant”, as I weigh 18 pounds. Of course, I enjoy napping, but I also love to snuggle, meet new people, and play with my four brother and sister cats. I look forward to daily screen time with my owners, when I get to watch videos of birds and other outdoor creatures. Some of my other favorite things include empty boxes, human shoes, squirrel watching, and dinner time. Although I share my owners’ time with other furry friends, I will always have a special place in their hearts.”

585-802-1544 DESIGN A GARDEN FOR ALL SENSES The lively sounds of the garden are created by the wildlife that come to pollinate and enjoy the environment gardeners have created. By choosing indigenous plants, gardeners can be sure that insects and small critters will seek refuge within the foliage. Songbirds also will add character to a yard. The Audubon Society suggests including a water source and a songbird border of shrubs along your property’s edge. Provide food sources and make sure they are located a fair distance from the main action of the yard so as not to scare off birds. Wait for musical chickadees, goldfinches, orioles, and cardinals to arrive and enjoy the accommodations. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Name the last player before Jose Altuve and Enrique Hernandez in 2017 to hit three home runs in a postseason game. 3. When was the last time the Tampa Bay Buccaneers reached the NFL playoffs? 4. In 2018, Villanova’s men’s basketball team set a Final Four record with 18 3-pointers made in a game. Which two teams had held the mark? 5. Canada’s men’s hockey team has won nine Olympic gold medals. How many silver and bronze medals has it captured? 7. When was the last time before 2018 that a team won golf’s Ryder Cup by at least seven points? (c) 2019 King Features Syndicate, Inc.

PLANT A TREE FOR SUCCESSFUL GROWTH Now it is time to amend the soil. It’s not enough to enrich only the soil in the hole where the tree will be placed. Move out into a circular area beyond where the roots will start so that roots can expand and properly anchor the tree. The next method of success is to ensure that the tree has a large enough hole to contain the existing root ball and allow for roots to grow and expand. Better Homes and Gardens experts say to prepare a hole that is two to three times as wide as the root ball of the tree. Treat the root ball gently. If the roots are wrapped in burlap, remove the burlap or push it to the bottom of the hole. Backfill the hole with soil and check that the tree is straight. Stake the tree to help it stay upright and straight until the roots anchor it more effectively. A layer of mulch around the base of the tree can prevent weeds and reduce water loss. Water daily for several weeks until the roots have fanned out. It’s best to leave trees be for the first growing season, only removing broken or diseased limbs. Resist pruning and shaping until the tree has survived its first growing season. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

PREVENT DIY INJURIES
Veteran Owned Business
Thousands of people try their hands at do-it-yourself home improvement projects every year. Whether working indoors or outdoors, wearing safety gear and exercising caution is a necessity when undertaking any home remodeling project. According to the Home Safety Council, one in five consumers will need medical attention this year as a result of home improvement projects. A 2013 survey by 3M TEKK Protection and the National Safety Council found that more than one-quarter of DIY home improvement projects ended with injuries to homeowners or someone else in the household. Falls from ladders, cuts from power tools and injuries from thrown debris account for many emergency room visits. Accidents involving chemicals and cleaning agents also can occur. Safety should be the utmost priority when renovating, and that means utilizing appropriate safety equipment.

PREP-YOUR-PLACE POINTERS (NAPSI)—Many people may be surprised to learn that fall is actually the most affordable season for home prep and repair projects. There’s less demand, so homeowners enjoy breaks on equipment and services. An easy place to begin is at the window. Cracked and warped windows can often cause heat to escape. “Windows that produce a draft or feel cold on the inside should be replaced,” explains Richard Kasunic, a home repair expert with Window Nation, one of the country’s leading window replacement companies. Modern vinyl windows fit tightly to shield homes from wind, water infiltration and inclement weather overall. With that said, many homeowners have older windows and are often “heating the outside,” adds Kasunic. “On average, homeowners spend 40 percent of their utility expense dollars on heating and cooling,” he says. “But if new windows aren’t in this year’s home budget, you might want to pick up insulated curtains, window and door gap seals, and add draft snakes on windowsills.” He also suggests replacing the weather stripping around doors if you see any light around the edges. For less than $10, you can likely reduce electrical bills throughout the year. Beyond windows and doors, exterior outlets, plumbing and utility access, chimneys and walkways should be sealed for unwanted holes, says Kasunic. And homeowners should have their furnaces and roofs professionally cleaned and inspected. Finally, cover the water heater and change the furnace filter so your furnace doesn’t have to work as hard. If you are thinking of new windows, Kasunic agrees that this is the best time for both availability and price. Learn More: For further facts and advice, go to www.windownation.com. CARE FOR TOOLS PROPERLY Homeowners often choose to save money and learn valuable skills by doing their own home improvement projects. These minor or major renovations are made much more successful by having the right tools for the job. Investing in good tools can be smart, but those tools are only effective if they are accessible and in good repair. Homeowners who emphasize taking care of their tools can make DIY projects that much easier and more rewarding.
ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A suggestion from a colleague on how to work out a problem might not sit too well with you. But before you suspect his or her motives, why not just accept it as a friendly gesture? TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) An associate might seek your counsel on a workplace dispute with another co-worker. Listen to what she or he has to say, but withhold advice until you’ve heard the other side of the story. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Use your Twin gifts for creativity and practicality to score points in landing an opportunity that could open doors to a new career. Someone returns after a long absence. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Although things are pretty hectic through much of the week, some quiet time with loved ones helps restore balance. An unexpected visitor brings welcome news about a mutual friend. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Getting used to change isn’t always easy for the Big Cat. But make the adjustments gradually, and soon you’ll hardly remember when things were any different from how they are now. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Continue to stay the course you’ve chosen, and avoid distractions that could throw you off track. Some knowledgeable folks are happy to provide guidance if you need it. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Although you earned plaudits from most coworkers for your recent stand on a workplace situation, you also raised the envy quotient among others. Tread carefully for now. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) You feel more positive about that delayed project, and you’re ready to pick it up on a moment’s notice. However, you might need to re-motivate those who have since lost interest. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Some welcome news should be coming your way. In the meantime, use that Sagittarius charm to convince some stillreluctant colleagues that your ideas have merit. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Don’t wait for a misunderstanding to work itself out. Instead, ask for a chance to explain the circumstances before those bruised feelings lead to an irreversible break. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A physical problem should be checked out in order to avoid it going from just being a nuisance to something more serious. Your social life takes an unexpected but not unwelcome turn. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Yours might be the wisest sign in the Zodiac. But you still could benefit from the wisdom of a close friend who has suggestions on how to handle a perplexing personal problem. BORN THIS WEEK: Your passion for doing the right thing inspires others to follow your well-trodden path toward justice. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

WORK PANTS: THE NEXT GENERATION
$$
(NAPSI)—Just as technology has had a major effect on the kind of work people do, it has also changed the clothes in which they do that work.
Good Runners or Junkers
For example, with hard work in mind, a new collection of pants has been created by Carhartt with a unique blend of durability and functionality.

“Our company has been around for nearly 130 years, and throughout our history, we’ve continued to improve our product offerings to fit the needs of our hardworking consumers,” says Deb Ferraro, vice president of product development at Carhartt. “This new collection of pants reinforces our commitment to setting a new standard for workwear.”

TIPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL DRIVING VACATION: Be firm with departure times. Make a plan to leave at a particular hour and stick to it. This will help to keep the trip on schedule.
Carhartt’s Steel Multi-Pocket pant, Steel Double-Front pant, and Steel Cargo pant feature the brand’s Full Swing® technology and a fabric blend of cotton, nylon and spandex. First introduced in 2015, Full Swing® uses stretch panels to provide ease of movement in the joints, improving hardworking consumers’ range of motion where they need it most—both on and off the job. Additionally, each of the new pant styles is equipped with knee pad openings designed to fit the company’s most recent innovation in knee protection. The Carhartt knee pad features a strapless, honeycomb design that maximizes durability and comfort, providing an easy-to-wear solution for impact protection. The launch of these new work pants coincides with a celebration of Carhartt’s oldest work pants. The classic Firm Duck Double-Front Work Dungaree was first introduced to the company’s product line in 1939, and it is now the focal point of the brand’s latest campaign celebrating its sewing, cutting and distribution associates. The video highlights the product details while unveiling the craftsmanship behind every pair of the B01 Firm Duck Double-Front Work Dungarees. DANGEROUS AIRBAGS AFFECT MILLIONS OF DRIVERS (NAPSI)—Roughly 37 million vehicles—across all makes and models— have dangerous, recalled airbags that need to be replaced immediately and they’re FREE. In the event of a crash, the faulty airbags can explode with sharp metal fragments, causing serious injury or even death to the driver or passengers. The easiest way to check if your vehicle has a defective airbag is to find your vehicle’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN), typically located on the driver’s side dashboard by the windshield and on vehicle registration and insurance documents. Next, visit CheckToProtect.org and enter the VIN. Within seconds, you’ll learn whether the vehicle has an open airbag safety recall. If you do have an open airbag recall, call your dealer immediately to set up a FREE repair. Recall repairs are FREE and will always be done at an authorized dealer, even if you purchased the vehicle somewhere else. Alternative transportation may be available at some dealers. Even after you’ve checked your vehicle, it’s important to set a reminder to check every six months for airbag and other safety recall notices. Recalls are announced by automakers throughout the year, and if you miss a recall announcement—or have lost touch with your original dealer—you could be driving a vehicle with a dangerous safety recall. To help protect your family and friends from these dangerous airbags, encourage everyone you know to Check To Protect today.
Your Medicare Open Enrollment To-Do List (NAPS) - You may be happy with your current Medicare coverage, but it pays to shop around. Here are a few things to keep in mind. Don’t shy away from shopping. Plan details change each year, so the policy that was best for you in 2018 may not be your best option for 2019. Changes to premiums, deductibles and co-pays can be costly. An analysis of more than 17,000 people using Medicare.com to compare Medicare plans found that just 10 percent were enrolled in the lowest-cost plan for their prescription drug needs. Those who switched to a new drug plan stood to save an average of $611. Watch for changes in drug coverage. Read any letters from your insurance company outlining changes in your prescription drug coverage. Insurance companies often tweak their formulary, or list of covered drugs, each year. That can mean higher out-of-pocket expenses for you. Compare coverage for your prescriptions under any new Medicare plan you consider. Be sure your doctors participate in your plan. Double-check to make sure your preferred doctors will still be part of your health plan’s network next year. You’ll pay more to see non-network providers, and some health insurers won’t cover out-of-network providers at all, except in an emergency. Compare services. MedicareAdvantage plans tend to offer additional benefits you can’t get with Original Medicare. These can include dental, vision, hearing and even fitness benefits. Shopping for Medicare plans can seem daunting, but there’s a range of services out there to help enrollees navigate them. Read up on your options and don’t hesitate to work through a licensed agent to help match you with the best plan for your needs. A health insurance agent can help you find the Medicare plan that’s best for you.

DINING OUT WITH INFANTS New parents often need a respite from the near-constant demands of infants. Dining out can be one of those breaks. When a babysitter is unavailable or if you’re not yet comfortable leaving a little one with someone else, bringing baby along may be possible. First, find a family-friendly restaurant or try an establishment that has outdoor seating where you can quickly distance yourself from other diners if need be. Time dining out around the baby’s feeding and sleeping schedule. Babies sated by a recent feeding and a relaxing car ride may be more inclined to sleep through your restaurant meal. Just in case, pack an extra bottle or prepare to breastfeed to keep your baby happy.

Beer Terms
• Hops: People just beginning to explore craft beer will no doubt hear the word “hops” a lot. Hops refers to the herb added to boiling wort or fermenting beer to impart a bitter aroma or flavor. • IBU: Expressed as a number, sometimes on the bottle or can in which the beer is sold, IBU stands for “International Bitterness Units” and indicates the hop bitterness in the finished beer. The higher the IBU, the more bitter the beer. • ABV: ABV stands for “alcohol by volume” and indicates the amount of alcohol in beer in terms of percentage volume of alcohol per volume of beer. • IPA: IPAs are incredibly popular among craft beer drinkers. An IPA is a style of beer and stands for India pale ale. These beers boast a strong hop bitterness, and many provide a piney, floral flavor. IPAs tend to be high-ABV beers and come in different varieties. American IPAs, Imperial or Double IPAs and English IPAs are popular styles. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Say Goodbye to Erectile Dysfunction
How Acoustic Wave Therapy Works:
The #1 cause of Erectile Dysfunction is poor blood flow due to blocked or hardened blood vessels. Unlike pills, needles, and creams that DO NOT treat ED, only the symptoms, Acoustic Wave Therapy is a “treatment” that will OPEN existing blood vessels and STIMULATE the growth of new blood vessels, making it possible to achieve a full and rigid erection. At Alpha Wave Medical we treat the root cause of Erectile Dysfunction with our proprietary FDA cleared Acoustic Wave Therapy. This type of treatment may provide long-term results and allow men to stop injecting or orally consuming chemicals to achieve an erection. The Therapeutic Advances in Urology Journal concluded that “Acoustic Wave Therapy aimed outside the body is a revolutionary treatment of ED.” The physicians and professional medical staff at Alpha Wave Medical will assist and manage your treatment protocol.

As men age, the blood vessels that supply blood to the penis begin to breakdown or collapse. Natural or drug induced blood flow cannot enter into the penis, thus creating ED.

Acoustic Wave Therapy opens existing blood vessels and stimulates growth of new blood vessels. As a result, our patients experience much stronger, firmer and more sustainable erections.

that lasted for 30 years. No treatments worked. The only sign my doctor could find was that my throat had scars from coughing that long. My allergy specialist had tried for years with all kinds of prescriptions, to no avail. I am now living a normal life since a doctor prescribed tramadol (50 mg) twice a day. What a relief. My wife, grown children, friends and clients are happy. -- L.G. ANSWER: I found only a single case report of tramadol being used for chronic cough, and it was effective in that patient. The authors advised further study on its use. Tramadol is a pain medication distantly related to codeine. Its abuse potential is low, but there have been overdoses and deaths due to this drug, so I don’t recommend its indiscriminate use. However, I have seen personally and received many letters from people with intractable coughing for years, so much so that I wanted to call attention to this as a possible treatment worth discussing with one’s doctor for people with longstanding cough that has resisted diagnosis or treatment. I previously mentioned taking gabapentin for laryngeal neuropathy, a condition that is often unrecognized and that may present with a prolonged cough. I received many letters telling me it was effective. Tramadol at the low dose (for an adult) you mention usually is safe.

RECOVERING FROM STROKE (NAPSI)—Stroke is a leading cause of long-term disability—in fact, it’s even more disabling than it is fatal. The period following a stroke can be difficult for patients and their loved ones, as they grapple with the uncertainties of recovery. For example, Sabrina Warren-White was a busy professional when a stroke in left her unable to speak or use her right side. She quickly began a rigorous rehabilitation program and can now speak, walk and use her right arm. Doctor’s Advice Once acute medical issues are resolved, focusing on rehabilitation is paramount to helping people build their strength, capabilities and confidence, said Dr. Larry B. Goldstein, the Ruth L. Works Professor and Chairman for the Department of Neurology and Co-director for the Kentucky Neuroscience Institute and KY Clinic at the University of Kentucky. “Most patients will recover to some degree, but a coordinated, multidisciplinary approach to rehabilitation is crucial because it has been shown to result in better outcomes for patients,” Dr. Goldstein added. Access to coordinated and intense therapies after a stroke is important because the greatest amount of recovery tends to occur in the first 30 days, Dr. Goldstein said. “Intensity of rehabilitation therapy matters,” he pointed out. “Patients need access to good rehabilitation services and should continue to work at it, even after that initial recovery period.” Where To Turn To help, the American Stroke Association’s Together to End Stroke initiative, nationally sponsored by Kindred Rehabilitation Services, raises awareness that stroke is largely beatable through high-quality rehabilitation, patient support, and implementation of Stroke Rehabilitation and Recovery Guidelines. Patients and caregivers can access more information about recovery and how to make informed decisions at www.StrokeAssociation.org/recovery. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

radiation seed therapy for prostate cancer in 2003 after a biopsy revealed a Gleason score of 7 (3/4). Afterward, his PSA was only 0.1 to 0.3 the first three years, and it rose only .3 more each year until 2015, when it was 2.7 recently. He is 83. He has been told he must have hormone treatment: shots, pills or both, by his VA provider, who is not a urologist and who says he should see one. He has no symptoms, he says, and he leads a very active lifestyle, with daily walking of 3 miles or more, bowling twice a week and extensive gardening and yard work. Could the rising PSA be due to normal exercise activity, including production from surviving prostate cells? -- R.A. ANSWER: Rising PSA after cancer treatment typically is due to cancer returning, not an increase in normal prostate. However, that does not mean that your friend “must” have treatment. Goals for cancer treatment in an 83-year-old man may be very different from those of a 20-year-old man. In his case, since it took about 10 years to increase by 10 times, it may be a very long time before the probable cancer would be large enough to bother him, and it requires skill and experience to determine whether treatment, which can make quality of life worse, is worthwhile. Many urologists would recommend deferring treatment until and unless he develops symptoms. I certainly would recommend that he go to see a urologist as his VA provider has recommended. He may be able to learn whether it really is the cancer returning and discuss his options. Shots and pills are options, but so is keeping a careful eye on it and not rushing to treat. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Debra Sheen Crafts Chocolate Indulgence By Amanda Dudek
Debra Sheen, chocolatier
D
ebra Sheen has just the kind of warmth one would imagine. Kind and generous, Sheen, like her chocolate confections, has a beautiful richness about her. Her Fairport chocolate shop is lined with shelves full of all kinds of delights, both traditional and unique, including yellow and dark chocolate roses, each petal delicately molded, and a chocolate Eiffel Tower. Perhaps surprisingly, Sheen has not always been a chocolatier. “It was a gradual move into making chocolate,” said Sheen. “I’ve always like making sweets, and I even made wedding cakes for a while.” She explained that, at first, she experimented with a variety of chocolate recipes. Then, through trial and error, she began creating her own chocolate recipes. Things quickly progressed from there. “Originally, I worked out of my home,” Sheen shared. “Then, I had a tiny retail space out of which I sold my chocolate wholesale, as corporate gifts and things like that.” Sheen decided to work in the private sector, preferring to offer her luxurious treats to those around her. “I rented out a larger place in Penfield for over seven years,” said Sheen. A move to Fairport followed. “When I made my move here to Fairport two years ago, it was partially due to the much larger production space this location offers,” said Sheen, adding that the Fairport community has been very supportive. “New people stop in every week, and others come in regularly for gifts.” Sheen also received the Small Business Person of the Year Award from Alignable this year. “I love making chocolate,” explained Sheen. “You can shape it, mold it. Every day, chocolate is different, and the process has to be adjusted. Chocolate is very temperamental, and working with it is an art.” Sheen described one of the most satisfying parts of being a chocolatier is seeing people’s faces when they taste her chocolate and they love it. “That raw reaction...it’s great!” she added. That isn’t to say that the process is easy. In fact, Sheen describes it as delicate and focused. “There is only one pace with chocolate,” she explained. “Chocolate can’t be rushed. I can’t leave the chocolate while I am making it. If I do, then I have to start all over again.” She explained that larger equipment that is automated may allow for more interruptions, but chocolatiers like herself who create their chocolate in small batches with small equipment

must have a very controlled environment. “It is worth it for that small batch goodness,” said Sheen, adding that making chocolate is also a mood booster. “You can’t be in a bad mood and make chocolate!” She was recently a part of Fairport’s St. Patrick’s Day Crawl. For her, the event was a success. “It was excellent,” she said. “We were one of people’s first stops, and we had a wonderful crowd. Guests were all dressed up, ready to have fun and explore local businesses.” According to Sheen, people came in and lingered, tried her tasting items and made purchases. “Thankfully, I didn’t run out!” Her St. Patrick’s Day Crawl tasting items consisted of a rich, dark chocolate brownie topped with a soft ganache, a smooth caramel sauce lightly flavored with Irish créme and slivered almonds. This was served with a sipping chocolate, a surprisingly delicate mixture of dark chocolate, cream, butter and créme de menthe. There is a purpose behind such luxury. “When people come in, I want them to have a unique and positive experience,” stated Sheen. “I try to get people to just slow down and feel that this is their moment to simply enjoy.” Sheen recognizes that everyone is busy juggling so much, and she feels this makes it even more important to take some time to slow down. “It actually changes the chemistry of your brain in a good way!” she added. Sheen explained that her treats are also meant to be an indulgence. “I never recommend that people eat chocolate or other treats mindlessly,” she said. “It is a special treat for self, a small reward.” With Easter on its way, Debra Sheen is working on some new creations. “I am working on an ‘adult’ Easter egg using Iron Smoke Maple Bacon Bourbon,” she said, adding that she will also be using airbrushing techniques to decorate some of her eggs this year, a method she has not used before. “I am also making little bird’s nests with different grains covered in chocolate. Inside these nests sit a marshmallow bird with little candy eggs,” said Sheen, adding that the treat weighs about 4 ounces altogether. “I also make bunnies and many other traditional Easter treats,” Sheen said. One of her best selling items is her Caramel Bijou which are made with a very soft caramel center on a crunchy base, dark chocolate covering and French sea salt. however- due to poor management and nepotism, this previously abundant employer can no longer find work in our field. Not only does this company practice horrible customer service, but they also treat their long time, loyal employees with disdain and disrespect. As a union member I am disgusted and horrified by the lack of appreciation this LLC has shown its employees over the past few years. If anyone is waiting on this company for work in the coming months- be prepared to be disappointed.

One public school in Greenville, South Carolina is embracing a different model and provides a haven for young artists from across the state to discover, develop and hone their talents. The South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities offers preprofessional training to its students in the areas of creative writing, dance, drama, music, and visual arts. As a public, residential high school serving juniors and seniors, it helps students refine their talents in a master-apprentice community while receiving nationally recognized academic education. The Governor’s School also serves as a resource to all teachers and students in South Carolina, offering comprehensive outreach programs designed to bring together artists, educators, community organizations, and schools. The school is supported by its own foundation—The South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities Foundation—by raising revenues to bridge the gap between funds provided to the school through government appropriation and the actual cost of the educational opportunities the school provides to its students. This extraordinary school recently captured the attention of Ovation TV, a cable and digital channel that is dedicated to the arts. Ovation and local cable provider Spectrum acknowledged the school’s contributions to the community and innovative approach to arts education and skills development with a $10,000 award via its Stand for the Arts arts advocacy initiative. SC Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities’ success provides a great lesson for communities across the country looking to support the arts and encourage the creative development of their youth.
