A Message from the President
Welcome to the 2024 Hemlock “Little World’s” Fair, a proud tradition since 1857. We showcase animals and agriculture from Livingston County, and take pride in sharing our agricultural heritage. We strive to provide the most affordable familyfriendly entertainment and education to the surrounding communities. Grandstand events are always exciting, with horses and horsepower keeping everyone on their feet! The Flying Wallendas, PAWS for Applause Canine Exhibition, and the Party Animals Petting Zoo are sure to be a hit with the young and the young-at-heart! Our midway, vendors and entertainment will provide something interesting for everyone.
There is something for everyone at the Hemlock Fair with events, exhibits, and activities that focus on the past, present and future. Many families have been attending our Fair for generations, so thank you for making Hemlock “Little World’s” Fair part of your family tradition. We are sure you will have a wonderful time!
Dave Gilbert
Dave Gilbert, President
THANK YOU
The Hemlock Lake Union Agricultural Society would like to say “Thank You” to all our Members, Sponsors and Supporters. As an all-volunteer organization, we depend on the support of our local businesses and organizations to assist us in making the Hemlock Fair possible.
We are fortunate to have a group of dedicated volunteers who work tirelessly to present the Fair each year. We take great pride in our historic buildings and grounds, and ‘work details’ take place nearly year-round to maintain and upgrade the Fairgrounds. Thank you to our volunteers who have been working behind the scenes to coordinate all the events and vendors, as well as making improvements and maintaining the grounds.
With the generous donations of goods, services and financial support from our Sponsors, we are able to continue to improve and grow each year. Local organizations and businesses help to promote the Hemlock Fair. Our First Responders are an important part of the Fair, providing the safety and security necessary to maintain a familyfriendly event. Special thanks to the Livingston County Sheriff’s Department and the Hemlock Fire Department for coordinating these efforts.
We appreciate all the efforts of everyone involved in assisting us in presenting the 2024 Hemlock “Little World’s” Fair. Without your generosity and support, our Fair would not be the great success it is today! Thank you!

Memories
Gary G. Patterson
The Hemlock Fair lost a Life Member, and great friend, when Gary Patterson passed away in November of 2023.
A native of Hemlock, Gary worked on the family farm in Lima before purchasing and operating the Keystone Gas Station in Livonia. He ran the Lima Rodeo on his property for many years, and was the driving force behind bringing the rodeo to the Hemlock Fair. Many people recall Gary’s years as a rodeo wrangler and pickup man!
Gary donated hundreds of hours to his community as a member of the Livonia Fire Department, the Livonia Rotary, and the Hemlock Little World’s Fair Board The Fair was a yearly staple in Gary’s life: a week to celebrate the community and agriculture that he held so dear. He was often found at the sawmill, working and visiting with his friends.
Gary loved model trains and constructed an elaborate layout in the basement of his home, named “Cherel Valley Railroad” after his
beloved wife, Elise and daughter, Cheryl. The Hemlock Fair will become the home of a large portion of the layout, which Gary generously left to the Fair. He will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him.

NY Sire Stakes Races
horse races. In the 1800s, horsemen from many nearby communities gathered to train and race their horses in ‘meets’ at our track. From the mid-1950s thru the 1990s, matinee races were held on Sundays during the month of May. This is where horsemen got their 2- and 3-year-old horses ready to race. Several horsemen started their careers at these matinees. In 1955, Ben Webster, a local favorite, won his first race here and went on to claim over 4,300 wins and over $43 million in purses. From a humble beginning here at the Hemlock track, his impressive 47-year career won him a spot in the Upstate New York Harness Racing Hall of Fame and the Batavia Downs Hall of Fame, as well as a special display in our Heritage Museum.
NY Sire Stakes is the nation’s oldest harness racing program to promote state-bred racing. Sponsored and formed from NY State harness racing organizations in 1961, it is now administered by the Agriculture & New York State Horse Breeding Development Fund.
racing of Standardbred horses in New York State, it is comprised of a three-tiered program for 2- and 3-year-old horses. The Hemlock track is part of the County Fair program, hosting races for trotters and pacers in both age levels. Although the Hemlock Fair existed nearly 100 years prior to the NYSS, the Fair has grown into the major event that it is in part because of Sire Stakes racing.
With over 120 years of harness racing at Hemlock, there is a long history of tradition and milestones from 1903 through the present. Opening Day of the Fair, we follow tradition and hold the 2- and 3-year-old Sire Stakes races. Stop in to enjoy the competition and become part of the proud tradition of NY State Sire Stakes racing at Hemlock ‘Little Worlds’ Fair! Post time is 12 Noon on Tuesday – join past generations for the ringing of the bell to officially open the Hemlock “Little World’s” Fair!

HEMLOCK FAIR AND HORSES: A Proud Tradition
The Hemlock “Little World’s” Fair was influenced by, and built upon, the backs of horses. Horses were used as transportation, and as labor in the agricultural fields that surrounded the area. Horses for transportation were expected to be fleet of foot, while a sturdy, strong horse was required for pulling wagons, plows, and stone sleds. Farmers began to compare and brag about the attributes of their horses, and competitions began in local communities. Vendors brought the newest agricultural machinery, carriages, livestock and crops in hopes of educating and selling to the crowds who gathered. The first ‘fair’ in Hemlock was held in 1857. The Hemlock Lake Union Agricultural Society was formed in 1868, consolidating all the local fairs… and so began the Hemlock “Little World’s” Fair.
In years gone by, contests were held to gain bragging rights to the draft horse or team that could pull the heaviest load. These competitions evolved into the horse pulls which are still held at the Fair. For many years the Tony Gerace arena has hosted teams from near and far, including Belgians, Percherons and other breeds, even the Budweiser Clydesdales! The light-weight and heavy-weight horse pulls will be held on Wednesday beginning at 5 pm.
This is our 121st year of harness racing at the Hemlock fairgrounds. In the 1800s, horsemen from many nearby communities gathered to train and race their horses in ‘meets’ at our track. From the mid-1950s thru the 1990s, matinee races were held here, and horsemen brought their 2- and 3-year-
old horses to gauge their potential and train them to race. Soon, breeding programs of stallions and trotters began. At one point there were over 100 horses stabled at the Fairgrounds. During recent renovations, dozens of old horse shoes were found… relics from the past. Post time for the NY Sire Stakes harness races at the Hemlock Fair is Tuesday at 12 Noon…a long- standing tradition to ‘open’ the Fair.
Another exciting horse event is the Livingston County Sheriff’s Department Mounted Patrol competition, which has been held at the Fairgrounds for approximately 20 years. Local counties (including Livingston, Monroe, and Wyoming) as well as teams from the Rochester and Albany Police Departments, bring mounted units to train and compete. Individuals compete on a course of 10 street-based obstacles, designed to reflect real-world scenarios. These include a construction zone, sirens & lights, backing into a stall, unexpected actions & noises, crowd control, suspect apprehension, escorting a patrol car and others. Men and women compete equally, as neither sex has an advantage on their mount. The Mounted competition takes place Wednesday at 1pm in front of the Grandstand.
Throughout the week, the Fair also hosts a variety of Open and 4-H horse shows, including Western, English and Miniature events. Join us at the Fairgrounds all week to see these and other horse events, and gain an appreciation for what horses mean to the past and the future of the Hemlock Fair.
