HOW SMALL BUSINESSES CAN MAKE THE MOST OF LOCAL MARKETS Do your research: Chances are business owners can find a number of festival or marketplace opportunities in or around their communities each month. Some of these festivals may be large scale events like annual Christmas bazaars, while others might be more toned down affairs that occur each week. Business owners can research local festivals, paying particular attention to how communities market the events and which businesses attend them. Community turnout is another significant factor to consider. Such research can help business owners determine which festivals best suit their businesses and what they’re hoping to accomplish.

Cat and Dog Can Coexist
Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I periodically dog-sit for a neighbor, keeping her small Beagle, Downy, at my house while she travels. The problem is my cat, Sparks. He is absolutely infuriated when I bring Downy home, even though Downy doesn’t bark at him. Sparks will yowl and glare at the dog every time they’re in the same room. And now, Sparks is peeing on the rug next to my bed the entire time that Downy visits. What can I do about this? -- Cheryl J., Reno, Nevada DEAR CHERYL: Ouch! Cats are notoriously territorial, not just with dogs but with other cats, too. And Sparks does not seem to be settling in to the notion that Downy is an OK guest to have. It’s clear that you’ll have to keep the two of them separate when Downy is visiting. But by leaving a mess on your bedroom rug, Sparks is signaling that separation may not be enough. The situation is really stressing him out. He’s drawing the line by marking your rug, a clear statement: This is my territory! The quickest way to resolve the issue, of course, is to stop dog-sitting for your friend -- or dog-sit by periodically visiting her home throughout the day to spend time with Downy and make sure he has food and water. But if that’s not possible, and you intend to keep Downy at your house instead, you’ve got only a few options. • Keep a clear separation between Downy and the cat. Place their food bowls in separate rooms with the door closed between them. • Change out the rug in your bedroom for a new one, and spray it with cat pheromone (available at pet stores) to try to stop Sparks from peeing on it. • Consider giving Sparks an anti-anxiety medication (available from the veterinarian) to reduce his stress. Best of luck. Be patient with both pets; they may never be comfortable around each other, but you may be able to keep them both from being too anxious.
DID YOU KNOW? Thought they might be most often associated with dogs, ticks can affect cats as well. According to Blue Cross for Pets, cats are most likely to encounter ticks if they live near areas with lots of deer and sheep or in regions where other wildlife, such as hedgehogs and rabbits, are present. While ticks are active throughout the year, cats are most likely to encounter them between spring and autumn. That’s due in part to the climate during these seasons, which tends to be warmer and therefore more inviting to cats, compelling them to spend more time outdoors than they do in winter. Ticks, which are egg-shaped, are big enough to spot, so cat owners should conduct a careful examination of their cats’ fur each time they come into the house after spending time in the yard. Blue Cross for Pets notes that ticks feel like small bumps on a cat’s skin. Ticks are most likely to attach themselves to particular areas of a cat’s body. These areas include the head, neck, ears, and feet. Routine brushing, especially whenever cats come inside after time spent outdoors, can help cat owners spot and remove ticks from their cats. It’s important to recognize that indoor cats are not invulnerable to ticks, as other pets and humans can track ticks indoors. Periodic inspections and brushing of indoor cats’ can protect them from ticks and the diseases ticks carry. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

Paying It Forward, One Onion At A Time I was dining at my favorite local restaurant, enjoying my usual: the famous garbage plate. Now, as we all know, the portion sizes of these beasts could feed a small army! So I always bring snack size baggies with me to save small portions for later, as well as the extra toppings. I had bagged up all of my leftovers and was walking to my car when I saw an older gal struggling under the weight of a hefty garbage plate. The mighty plate proved to be too much and clattered to the ground, spilling some of its precious contents! I sprang into action as quickly as I could (I ain’t no spring chicken myself!) and saved what I could for this hungry patron. As I helped wrangle her meal, I noticed her plate was lacking the integral diced onions. How serendipitous! I promptly pulled my snack size baggie of diced onions from my pocket and handed it to her with a slight bow. She departed, bounty in tow, off to enjoy her sumptuous GP with diced onions. It made my day to make her day. Bon appetit! Thank you! I’d like to thank the parents of TE for raising an honest young man. Last week I lost my purse while running errands. I went home and couldn’t find it, so I went to the last place I remember stopping - my local dollar store. When I went back, T was the first person to greet me with my purse - what a relief! There was an older gentleman who said, “Lady, you’re lucky to get your purse back!” and he was right. I was so thankful, not for the $10 left in it but my license, DPA, credit cards, pictures, and more were all there. I’m 88 years old and the only thing I could remember was that I lost my bag. This is a tip for older ones: make a list of everything in your wallet and leave it in a safe place at home. Then if you lose it, you’ll be able to know what exactly you’re missing. T - it would be a better world if everyone was honest like you. Thank you!

SHARE WITH US Junk and More I cannot believe how the village is OK with a business using a historical area for junk/storage. This has been brought up to the village office and code enforcement. It seems like they are more concerned about a single vehicle in a remote location than the center of the village. Why? It makes me wonder about the special privileges some people/owners receive. It wasn’t that long ago the village was all over a business in the same area to clean up, so why does this place get a free pass? I know NOTHING was said because MORE junk is being piled up. Boats, vehicles, trailers, vans, lawn mowers, appliances, plows, A-Verdi boxes, lawn furniture, toys, etc. Visitors are seeing this area and the village should be ashamed. STOP THE SMOKERS Please stop the people taking over some of the senior apartment buildings by smoking inside every day for years. It is putting others’ health at risk. Get them out! They do it because they can. What are you afraid of? You’re not very good at your job. Do your job or find another one that you’re good at. You don’t take away one’s right and give it to another. Historical Heirloom Afghan: A Tale of Craftsmanship and Community Spirit
I
BY COLLEEN FRESSIE, AVON LIBRARY SENIOR CLERK
n 1955, Normotta Yarn published the instructions for the Heirloom Afghan. As described in the notation to the pattern, this afghan had been created by Margareta Ohberg, shown in Women’s Day Magazine, and won first prize in a nationwide contest while being exhibited at the Eastern States Exposition. Dorothy Dunderdale started to follow the pattern for the Heirloom Afghan. She was able to crochet 35 of the squares and cross stitch the pattern for three of the houses, two of the center flowers, and two of the corner flowers before she died. Lisa Settle Dunderdale took charge of the afghan, giving it to her mother Gail Settle, who, in turn, offered it to the Avon Free Library’s Sit ‘N’ Knit Group to finish and donate it to the library as a fundraiser. As daunting as it was to set needle to the beautiful squares, the members of the group and many staff and community members outside the group rose to the challenge.
Starting in April 2023, the master needle workers, including Gail Settle, Eloise Puls, Kathy Barsz, Carol Cattone, Colleen Fressie, Mary Lathron, Grace Frenzel, Cathy Hancher, Pamela Bickford, and Linda Conrad spent over 350 hours during and outside of the weekly Sit ‘N’ Knit meetings, meticulously following the patterns for the afghan, each sharing her particular skills with the others. The group agreed that some of the buildings specified in Ohberg’s original pattern should be replaced with buildings that are special to the Avon Community. Pamela Bickford turned one of the building patterns into our library and Gail Settle created the Opera
GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111
Block Pattern. The group also agreed that a center square would reflect the time and place of the undertaking: Avon Free Library, 2023. Besides needlepointing squares, Linda Conrad crocheted the border and Mary Lathron secured the backing. This was truly a “Community” project!
The library is raffling this afghan off this winter. Tickets are available at the Avon Library, and the drawing will be held during the Avon Holiday Spectacular.

KEEP CALM & DON’T BUG OUT ABOUT THE ASIAN GIANT HORNET by Dick Rogers, principal scientist and entomologist, Bayer Bee Care Program
GENERAL CONTRACTING
(NAPSI) — Scientific information can ease the fears of many people concerned about the arrival of the Asian giant hornet in the United States. What do we know? Hornets are found in many parts of the world and play a vital role in the balance of natural ecosystems through pollination, biodiversity and natural pest control. Unfortunately dubbed the “murder hornet,” the Asian giant hornet (AGH), the world’s largest, was sighted for the first time in the United States in December 2019. Who (or what) is at risk? While the AGH is large in size and has a big sting compared to other hornets, it is typically not aggressive with humans (Whew! That’s a relief). As always, those allergic to bee or wasp stings should practice caution and avoid contact with hornets in general. However, the AGH can pose a risk to honey bee colonies because it feeds on large insects, including wasps and bees. So far, they’ve only appeared in the northwest part of the United States, and monitoring efforts by the Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) are underway to better understand these hornets and help educate beekeepers on how to protect their colonies.

On top of this, our team at Bayer is taking action by organizing a first detection trapping program in North Carolina and Missouri, which will be deployed in early July. We will then share our results with the WSDA at the end of the season. While we do not expect to catch any AGH this year, early detection is key to an effective eradication effort if needed. You can be confident that the early introduction of the AGH in the United States and Canada is being closely monitored by professionals who have management plans in place should there be any future sightings. There’s no need to worry about catching a glimpse of these hornets in your yards or gardens, as they are not yet established in the United States. In fact, the only hornet that is established in our country, the European hornet, has been around since the late 1800s. How can we help protect the bees? It’s not only researchers and entomologists who can help protect honeybees. Everyone can support bees by getting outside to plant pollinator-friendly gardens or flowers.

BUDGET-FRIENDLY WAYS TO UPGRADE A LANDSCAPE
LAWN & LANDSCAPING
Add a pop of color with planters. Awe-inspiring colors can make a landscape stand out from surrounding properties. Flowers, bushes and plants may be the first thing homeowners consider when trying to add color to their lawns, but planters can provide a more immediate way to give exterior grounds some color. Bold planters won’t lose their color in a matter of weeks like many flowers do, and homeowners can switch planters so the colors align with the season. For example, some pastel planters can evoke the spirit of spring, while orange planters can be filled with mums to give a landscape an autumnal feel.

BUDGET-FRIENDLY WAYS TO UPGRADE A LANDSCAPE Plant to create privacy. Homeowners spent more time at home than ever before during the pandemic, and some might have grown tired of seeing what their neighbors are up to. Fencing might be the first solution homeowners consider when looking to make their landscapes more private. But new fencing installation can be expensive, costing homeowners between $1,667 and $4,075 on average, according to BobVila.com. A more costly and natural solution is to plant trees around the perimeter. Speak with a local landscaping professional, who can survey the property to see which trees might thrive and provide the privacy homeowners want.

Curtailing energy consumption is a great way for people to protect the planet’s natural resources and save money at the same time. Part of the difficulty with regard to reducing energy consumption is that energy plays such a big role in our lives. Smartphones and tablets have become must-have items, and these items, though not necessarily big consumers of energy, must be plugged in and charged. But individuals won’t have to unplug from their lives to reduce their energy consumption. In fact, there are several easy, non-invasive ways for everyday people to reduce their energy consumption. Reducing energy consumption does not require substantial sacrifice, but it can produce substantial savings and benefit the planet in myriad ways.

HOW TO INVOLVE MORE YOUNG PEOPLE IN AGRICULTURE Highlight the challenges ahead and how agricultural professionals can help overcome them. UN projections indicate the global population will grow by more than two billion people by 2050. Finding a way to feed all of those people in the face of climate change will be no small task, but it’s a task that will require dedicated agricultural professionals. Educators and parents can emphasize these challenges when speaking to young people about a career in the agricultural sector, noting that such careers will present real opportunities to make a difference.

Magic Maze – HEART
STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Had Georgie Fletcher of Australia never signed on to play the mobile game “Words With Friends,” her husband, Simon, might be dead. Georgie struck up a friendship via the game’s chat feature with frequent opponent Beth Legler from Missouri. One day, Georgie told Beth that Simon hadn’t been feeling well. Beth relayed his symptoms to her husband Larry, a doctor, who insisted that the Fletchers go to the hospital immediately. A 99% blockage was discovered near his heart, which, left untreated, would have certainly been fatal. * The process of things being stretched out and torn apart as they enter a black hole is called spaghettification. * Our senses of taste and smell are cut by 50% and 20%, respectively, during flights, which is why airplane food has never tasted so hot. (“That’s what I’ve been telling you!” said every airplane food chef, ever.) *** Thought for the Day: “A mind that is stretched by a new experience can never go back to its old dimensions.” -- Oliver Wendell Holmes GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

Determine the charging time of your vehicle: The automotive experts at J.D. Power note that EVs come with different types of charging systems. Level 1 are the most readily available EVs, and these come with a standard 120-volt three prong plug that’s common in modern homes in the United States. That’s convenient, but charging using a Level 1 outlet may take a significant amount of time and only provide a few miles per hour of charging. If you’re renting an EV, confirm which type of car you’re getting and emphasize to the rental agency that you prefer a car that can be charged easily and effectively. One that can be charged overnight and provide hundreds of miles of driving time after a full charge is ideal.

VILLAGE OF GENESEO
LEAF PICKUP SCHEDULE
Leaf pickup will begin Thursday, October 19th and run through Friday, December 1st. How To Place Leaves for Pickup Leaves should be placed close to the edge of the road. They should not extend onto the road. Leaves should not be placed in ditches or covering storm sewer drains. Doing this will obstruct the storm drains which will increase the risk of flooding. Leaves should be in a long row no farther off the road than 8 feet. Do not mix branches of foreign objects with the leaves. This can cause damage to the machine that picks up the leaves. Refer to branch pickup for branches. The village has leaves from collections from previous years available. They are excellent for gardens or landscape areas!

INFLUENTIAL JAZZ MUSICIANS Jelly Roll Morton (18901941): New Orleans native Jelly Roll Morton, a pianist and songwriter, honed his pianoplaying abilities in the bordellos of the Big Easy. In fact, it was in those establishments where the man born Ferdinand Joseph Lamothe earned his distinctive nickname. Biography.com notes that while his claims to have been the inventor of jazz might have been dubious, Morton is considered to be the first jazz musician to commit his arrangements to paper.

HOW TO AVOID MUSCLE SORENESS Muscle soreness can affect people from all walks of life. While exercise enthusiasts who work out several times per week may feel like they should be immune to muscle soreness, this potentially painful condition that can adversely affect quality of life can fell even the most ardent fitness fanatic. Those who find themselves routinely battling muscle soreness can employ the following tactics to feel better and enjoy the fruits of their labors in the gym. Listen to your body. Daily exercise can greatly benefit long-term health, but it’s important that men and women listen to their bodies, paying attention to any signs that it might be time for a break. Each person is different, but exercise aficionados who recognize any abnormal signs such as unexplained fatigue or cramps may need to take a day off. Bodies need time to recover after a workout. Get adequate sleep. Getting enough sleep provides recovery time. The National Sleep Foundation recommends that adults between the ages of 18 and 64 years of age get between seven and nine hours of sleep per night. The NSF recommends adults 65 and older get between seven and eight hours of sleep per night. Don’t overdo it. Pushing a body too hard increases a person’s risk of injury or illness. Muscles that are overtaxed will very likely begin to feel a type of pain known as delayed onset muscle soreness, or DOMS. The American College of Sports Medicine notes that any type of activity that places unaccustomed loads on muscle may lead to DOMS, but activities such as strength training exercises, walking down hills, jogging, step aerobics, and jumping are known examples of contributors to DOMS. Such activities should not necessarily be avoided, but it’s important that men and women not push themselves to the point of overexertion when performing them.
This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.
Stay hydrated. Muscle soreness may appear if men and women are not drinking enough water before, during or after their workouts. A dehydrated body’s muscles do not have enough electrolytes, and that can be contributing to the feelings of soreness some exercise enthusiasts feel. Drink lots of water throughout the day, and don’t forget to bring a water bottle along to the gym when working out. Muscle soreness can be painful and difficult to deal with. But the solution to address such soreness is oftentimes very simple.

IMPORTANT NEWS!
Here’s a tip
NEW GENESEO OFFICE LOCATION! You won’t see me at the Geneseo Walmart but you can find me at my new office up the road.
* Fill your salt and pepper shakers a fourth of the way with uncooked white rice. Dry rice will allow the salt or pepper to flow more freely from the shaker. If your shaker is opaque, you can tell when it’s time to add more salt or pepper when the shaker starts to rattle.

* Mark old toothbrushes with masking tape so you can tell the difference between cleaning brushes and those you use for your teeth. You can clean a toothbrush in the dishwasher. Put it with the silverware.
• Scheduled appointments to avoid waiting • Private location to share sensitive information • Easy to find in the Village of Geneseo • Parking very close to the door
Call or text to schedule your Annual Election Review with Terry at 585-299-2199
* Because fabric softeners can leave residue on the dryer’s lint trap, clean yours out at least every other month. Just scrub with plain old soap and water.
I look forward to seeing you at my new Geneseo office location!
* “Add this to the list of wonderful cleaners for wood floors: tea. Just brew a couple of cups and use the tea as you would your regular wood floor cleaner. It’s nice and shiny afterward.” -- P.L. in Oregon

GET CREATIVE WITH APPLES THIS FALL Serves 6 to 8 2 to 3 tablespoons unsalted butter 2 pounds apples, eeled, cored and cut into thick slices 1/2 cup honey, preferably sage honey 1/2 cup white wine Zest of 1 lemon Juice of 1 lemon Fresh sage sprigs for garnish 1. Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the apples, turn the heat to high and sauté until they begin to brown on the edges, about 5 minutes. If some are getting too well done, remove them and place on a plate while the rest continue to cook, then return them to the skillet when all are done. 2. Reduce the heat to low and add the honey, wine, lemon zest, lemon juice, and 1/2 cup water. Cover and allow to cook until the apples are tender but still firm; you don’t want them to turn into applesauce. 3. Serve this in a bowl, tuck in a couple sprigs of fresh sage from your garden, and tell your guests all about sage honey. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

Prepare Your Garden for Winter’s Onslaught Remove spent plants Decomposing organic material is the basis for compost and other fertilizers. However, vegetable plants that are left to sit can lead to decay in the garden. Decaying plants can serve as hosts for pest populations and diseases. Rotting vegetables also can drop unwanted seeds into the soil, which eventually can strip nutrients that normally would go to next year’s crops. Ornamental plants and perennials can be cut back in fall. Cut down stalks and remove leaves.
Now accepting new patients
Plant a cover crop A cover crop protects the soil and can return nutrients to it. When the soil is bare during winter, weed seeds can easily blow in and lie in wait, ultimately becoming a problem during the ensuing year. Cover crops can include clover or field peas, which will increase the levels of available nitrogen. Amend the soil Fall is a perfect time to add soil amendments, such as manure and compost. These fertilizers will add nutrients and break down gradually, enriching the soil over the winter. Divide bulbs Divide plant bulbs and plant them where you want flowers like daffodils and tulips to grow in the spring. Prune dormant plants Wait until plants are dormant to prune them and adjust their shape. Most shrubs and trees should be pruned in late winter, right before new growth. Move potted plants Bring delicate plants into a sheltered area, such as a greenhouse or indoor garage, so they can continue to thrive during the winter. Academic OPEN HOUSE
EXPERIENCE ALL GENESEE HAS TO OFFER!
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Seizure-Like Reactions Pose the Question of Epilepsy --DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband experienced seizure-like
episodes without tonic/clonic body movements in high altitude. These episodes occured while he was traveling, being physically active in Colorado and skiing in France. Both episodes happened at least 12 hours after physical activity. Our general physician back home felt that these were not true seizures, instead a reaction to possibly being dehydrated in high altitudes. A vast amount of testing resulted in nothing unusual going on with his cardiovascular system or his brain. But just recently, he had another episode two days after being active, hydrating at sea level and banging his head -- with more body movement this time. I have been researching online, and seizure-like reactions seem to occur due to electrolyte imbalances. It is very hard to get to a neurologist without an excessive wait time. Do you think antiseizure medications are warranted? -- S.S. ANSWER: It’s important to separate a seizure (which anyone can get if there is enough stress to the brain) from epilepsy, a condition where the person is susceptible to recurring seizures. For it to be considered epilepsy, a person generally needs at least two unprovoked seizures (with no unusual stress to the brain) at least 24 hours apart. Only epilepsy is treated with long-term antiseizure medicines. There is indeed a risk of developing seizures while at a high altitude. In addition, there are many other conditions that can provoke a seizure. You mentioned electrolyte imbalance, but sodium (too much or too little) as well as too little amounts of magnesium and calcium are among the most common. Low blood sugar is a frequent cause. Some recreational drugs cause seizures, but withdrawal from drugs, especially alcohol, is more common. Metabolic diseases of the kidney and thyroid are also common. Sleep deprivation, brain injury (especially stroke, but also trauma), brain tumors and brain infections are all common triggers that your husband probably received an evaluation for. Had it only been the first seizure, my advice likely would have been the same as your physician’s, although I probably would have suggested a consultation with an epileptologist (a neurologist with special expertise in seizures). Now that he has had a second -- and unprovoked -- seizure, my suspicion that he has epilepsy is much higher. (In hindsight, it’s clear that the first reaction really was a seizure.) Most people experiencing their first seizure while at a high altitude were eventually found to have epilepsy after further testing, including an electroencephalogram (EEG). The high altitude doesn’t cause the seizure; it just increases the risk of a seizure in a person who has an underlying propensity for it. This may also occur with many medicines, especially those used for depression. Your husband should see an epileptologist as soon as possible. I strongly feel that it’s unwise for nonexperts to prescribe anti-seizure drugs, except as a treatment until a patient can be seen by an expert. I have seen that done many times, and it is done improperly, at least according to the expert a patient eventually sees. Your husband needs a timely and comprehensive reevaluation. Epileptologists recognize that new onset seizures in an adult require a more timely appointment.

Joanne H. Magar (Harrington) February 15, 2023 Lima - February 15, 2023 at age 91. Joanne is survived by her children, Mark (Linda) of N.J., Martha Butler of Ohio; grandchildren, Matthew Magar and Barbara Lusk (Chad Mahaffy); greatgrandchildren, Jesse and Tucker Lusk, Wayne Mahaffy; niece, Lina Coon and nephew, Joseph Kalb; many great-nieces, and nephews. Joanne was predeceased by her loving husband of 66 years, Ray; her sister, Mary H. Kalb; and nephew, Dr. John Kalb. Joanne worked for and retired from the James S. Sullivan Insurance Agency. She was an avid gardener and could often be seen tending to her flowers. Joanne loved to cook for her family and friends. In times of crisis, she was always there to help, often with a warm home cooked meal. Joanne was active in the community until her passing serving with FISH (Friends In Service Here) and as a long time member of the Lima Golden Agers Club. She served as secretary for the Livingston County Office of the Aging Advisory Board and Trade. A volunteer for the Livingston County Heart Assn, March of Dimes, docent for the Lima Historical Society, assisted in flu clinics and distributing coupons for the Farmers Market. She was a den mother for the Cub Scouts in Lima. Joanne was a lifelong member of St Rose Parish and a member of the Catholic Daughters of America for 50 years. She volunteered for many activities in the church. She could often be seen in the kitchen at bereavement lunches. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Lima Volunteer Ambulance, PO Box 335, Lima, NY 14485.
“I have never for one instant seen clearly within myself. How then would you have me judge the deeds of others…” ~ Maurice Maeterlinck We might assume that Maeterlinck, the Belgian poet and dramatist probably best-known for his “Blue Bird”, which taught us that happiness could be found right at home, would be superbly self-assured. It’s surprising that he confesses that he, like many of us, has difficulty seeing clearly within himself. Because we’re not too sure what really makes us tick, we should not be too quick to judge the way others choose to live their lives. This assumes, of course, that their lifestyle does not interfere with ours. We can provide funeral services in any price category, starting with minimum cost immediate disposition. The cost of a funeral is entirely a matter of family preference.

How physical activity can help in the fight against breast cancer
Breast cancer is a complex disease that affects millions of women across the globe each year. Though the American Cancer Society (ACS) reports that only about 4 percent of women diagnosed with breast cancer in the United States are under age 40, women of all ages can take steps to protect themselves against this deadly disease. Exercise benefits women in a myriad of ways, and that includes lowering their risk for breast cancer. The ACS notes that researchers are increasingly linking exercise to a reduced risk for breast cancer. Though the reasons behind that link remain unclear, some theorize that the positive effects of exercise on body weight, inflammation, hormones, and energy balance could be why regular physical activity helps women reduce their risk of breast cancer. Body weight and breast cancer The National Cancer Institute reports that being obese after menopause can significantly increase a woman’s risk for breast cancer. In addition, the ACS attributes the rise in hormone receptor-positive breast cancers to an increased prevalence of excessive body weight. Routine exercise is a highly effective way to lose weight and keep weight off, which in turn could lower women’s risk for breast cancer.
Does physical activity really reduce breast cancer risk? The human body is complex, and a host of factors, including those like age that women have no control over, can affect cancer risk. However, engaging in routine physical activity seems to be an effective way for women to reduce their risk for breast cancer. In fact, the Breast Cancer Research Foundation estimates that one-third of all breast cancer cases could be prevented with positive lifestyle choices that help women maintain a healthy weight, including exercise. Routine physical activity can be a significant weapon in women’s arsenal as they continue their efforts to prevent and overcome breast cancer.
Being sedentary and breast cancer Exercise is a not a sedentary activity, and that could be another reason why women who are physically active have a lower risk for breast cancer. The ACS notes that more than one study has linked sitting time to a higher risk of various diseases, including breast cancer. Researchers with the ACS analyzed data from 77,462 women, who they followed for an average of 15.8 years.
GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111
None of the participants had cancer when the study started, but researchers found that women who sat for six or more hours per day during their free time had a 10 percent greater risk for invasive breast cancer than women who sat for less than three hours per day during free time.

RELIEVE STRESS THROUGHOUT THE DAY Walk away. The APA notes that taking a break from a stressor is one of a handful of healthy techniques that research has indicated is a successful way to reduce stress, both in the short- and long-term. If a project at work is proving especially stressful, step away for a short period of time to do something else, whether it’s to go for a brief walk or converse with a coworker about something unrelated to the project. Avoiding the stress entirely, especially if it’s a work project or a bill that must be paid, is not the answer. But a short break from the stressor and thinking about it can provide a new perspective and time to calm down.

GET A HANDLE ON WORK-RELATED STRESS Take more time off. According to the “State of American Vacation 2016” report from Project: Time Off, American workers failed to use 658 million vacation days in 2015. Vacation is not just a time to get away, but a valuable, effective way for workers to recharge. The APA notes that avoiding the negative effects of chronic stress and burnout requires workers to take time away to replenish and return to their pre-stress level of functioning. Taking time off to disconnect from work and avoid thinking about work can be just what workers need to overcome their work-related stress. And plenty of workers have the time to take off; they just need to take it.
TAKE A CUE FROM SUCCESSFUL WOMEN Make time for exercise. A sluggish body can make for a sluggish mind. Successful people need to be sharp, and exercise can help them maintain their mental focus. According to John J. Ratey, Ph.D., a clinical associate professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, muscles send hormones rushing to the brain where they mix with a substance called brain-derived neurotrophic factor, or BDNF. BDNF plays a role in brain cell growth and learning. Without it, brains can’t absorb new information or grow and learn. Exercise also helps relieve stress, which can make resolutions easier to see and make tasks less overwhelming.

In fact, automated résumé bots may initially screen the documents to thin the crowd. According to data from the 12th annual Mystery Job Candidate survey by CareerXRoads, the average recruiter spends six seconds looking at a résumé. If a résumé is lengthy or doesn’t attract attention, it will likely be ignored. Stick to a single-page and make sure wording is brief but meaty.
