Keep Winter Energy Bills in Check (Family Features) As w inter temperatures drop, the potential for higher utility bills goes up. Taking steps ahead of the cold season can help you trim costs and make your home more energy efficient, keeping those utility bills in check even as the w inter w eather rages. Before w inter w eather sets in for your part of the country, take some time to assess your home for potential problem areas and improvements that can help low er your energy costs. Lighting. Though turning off unneeded lights is a smart strategy any time of year, it’s especially helpful during the w inter months w hen utility expenses can add up. New technology lets you manage your lights aw ay from home using an app on your smartphone. Water heaters. Heat isn’t the only system that gets an extra w orkout come w inter. Cooler house temperatures may require w ater heaters to w ork harder, so ensuring you have a model w ell-suited to your family’s year-round needs is key. In fact, heating w ater is the second source of energy use in the residential home after space heating and cooling, w ith standard electric w ater heaters costing the average homeow ner $585 every year to operate. Thermostat. A programmable thermostat is easy to install and saves energy (and money) by automatically adjusting to predetermined temperature settings. Air leaks. An airtight house is critical to managing your heatrelated expenses. Sealing cracks around those w indow s and doors, and other leak-prone areas such as the basement and attic, w ill help keep heat inside and costs dow n.

HOME IMPROVEMENT PREVENT DIY INJURIES Wear solid shoes that provide considerable traction during home improvements. A firm, reinforced toe is helpful as well. Should any items fall, they’ll be less likely to cause injury if your foot is encased in a protective boot or sturdy shoe. Soles that grip surfaces will help safeguard against slips and falls.

DID YOU KNOW? Many an amateur landscaper has encountered grubs while tending to their lawns, but even the most attentive green thumber may have a lawn infested with grubs and not know it. According to the pest and weed experts at Roundup®, grubs often go unnoticed until late summer, when they’ve already done substantial damage to a lawn. Oddly enough, one of the telltales signs of a grub infestation is not the grubs themselves but the animals looking to dine on them. Fully grown grubs make for hearty meals, so homeowners who notice raccoons, skunks, armadillos, and/or birds digging up their lawns may have a grub infestation. That’s because these unwanted guests like to dine on mature grubs who have spent summer feasting on organic matter in the soil. Another sign of a possible grub infestation is a lawn that feels spongy when stepped on. Patches of dead grass that peel back easily are a sign that grubs have eaten the roots that keep healthy grass in place.

DID YOU KNOW ? Exercise is a great w ay to maintain a healthy mind and body. M any people begin a new year by making resolutions to lose w eight or build musc le. Too often, how ever, men and w omen get stuck in an exercise rut, follow ing the same exercise routine w eek after w eek. Not only can this be boring, fitness experts advise that it’s nec essary to c hange an exercise routine periodically to continue to see results. It’s one reason w hy many fitness clubs unveil new classes every few w eeks. Just w hen you master the choreography of a class, it’s time to change! W ith repetition, the body adapts and grow s accustomed to the routine, using less energy as a result. That can affect your ability to lose w eight. Changing your w orkout forces your body to w ork harder, producing better results. If you exercise w ith a trainer, discuss w ays to modify your normal routine to surprise your body. Inc reased intensity, interval training, adding sprints to running, taking different classes, or even increasing the frequency of your w orkouts may do the trick.

Refresh Your Home for Spring Get rid of grime A whole season’s worth of dirt and dust accumulates during the cold winter months. A deep clean inside and out can restore your home to its former glory. Inside, take time to launder all of your linens, including curtains, rugs and bedding. Move furniture to vacuum behind and below, and don’t overlook dust and dirt magnets like mirrors, light fixtures and the insides of cabinets, especially higher shelves that see infrequent use. Outdoors, hose off or power-wash surfaces like windows, siding, decks and concrete to restore a crisp, clean appearance. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * On Earth you need heat to fuse metal, but in space, due to the lack of atmosphere, two pieces of the same kind of metal will fuse together with just a little pressure in a process called cold welding. * Digging a hole to China is possible if you start in Argentina. * Liquids can boil and freeze at the same time. * Can’t get your kids to eat their carrots and broccoli? Perhaps they suffer from lachanophobia, otherwise known as the fear of vegetables. * Hurricanes release the energy of 10,000 nuclear bombs.

For millenia, people around the world have commemorated the arrival of a new calendar year by adhering to various traditions. Once such tradition is making resolutions for the year ahead. Resolutions are promises to oneself geared around personal fulfillment and betterment. Resolutions are widely practiced, but some people may not understand the origins of New Year’s resolutions and why they have become the norm. Some historians tie the practice of making resolutions to the ancient Babylonians. More than 4,000 years ago, the Babylonians celebrated the New Year in March rather than January. The spring harvest was in March, and a festival called Akitu, which lasted 12 days, was celebrated. An important part of the festival was the crowning of a new king. Special rituals also affirmed a connection to the gods. The Babylonians made promises to the gods, which included vows to return borrowed objects and pay outstanding debts. Resolutions can also be traced to ancient Rome. The Romans were instrumental in creating a more formal calendar, and the start of the new year was moved from March to January (January and February were added to the Roman calendar under the rule of Numa Pompilius). Julius Caesar wanted to honor January’s namesake, Janus, the Roman god of beginnings. Janus’ two faces enabled him to look back into the past and forward into the future. Sacrifices to Janus were made, and worshipers exchanged gifts with one another. A custom of setting resolutions began during this period as well, with Romans promising to be good to one another. Eventually, these resolutions were funneled into prayers and fasting when Christianity was adopted by the Roman Empire. Other religious parallels include the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur, which is a day of atonement and reflection as celebrants examine their wrongdoings and seek forgiveness and to behave better moving forward. Yom Kippur follows Rosh Hashanah, Judaism’s own new year. Resolutions also may be loosely tied to Medieval times. During this time, knights took a “peacock vow” at the end of the Christmas season. Each year, these knights would reaffirm their commitment to chivalry. Today New Year’s resolutions are largely a secular tradition, but they’re still connected to a desire to be a good person and put one’s best self forward.

FACTORS TO CONSIDER BEFORE INVESTING IN REAL ESTATE Condition of the property: Product shortages were another trend to emerge during the pandemic, and disruptions to the supply chain will not necessarily go away anytime soon. In addition, the cost of various products associated with home improvements, including lumber, skyrocketed during the pandemic. The National Association of Home Builders noted that while lumber prices declined in 2021, the price of lumber packages quoted to builders remained high. That means real estate investors who invest in properties that will need work could be forced to pay a lot to fix these properties. And ongoing supply chain issues could extend the time it takes to renovate a property. Investors must be able to bear these costs and lag times to make the most off their real estate investments.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Does Pet Insurance Extend to Pet Sitters? DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I left my dog Shep in the care of a pet sitter for a week while I was away on business. The sitter texted me that Shep cut his paw during a walk in the nearby woods, and they took him to my veterinarian for care. Shep is doing fine now. I have pet insurance, but I don’t think it’s my responsibility to pay for this. The injury occurred while the sitter was walking him. The sitter says that injury and illness are my responsibility to cover. Who should pay? -- Bill in Chicago DEAR BILL: Did the sitter give any details of how Shep was injured? The circumstances are important. For example, if Shep was on-leash and stepped on an unexpected piece of debris in the path, that’s different than if Shep was let off-leash and was running free in the woods. But, if you normally let him off-leash in the woods and instructed the sitter that it was OK to do that, then that’s another consideration. Talk more with the sitter to get more details. In the meantime, pay the vet and submit the reimbursement claim to the pet insurance company. Professional sitters routinely include a statement in their contract with clients that any illness or injury is the responsibility of the client. This protects them from financial loss if something does happen. However, if they are accused of deliberately neglecting or abusing a pet in their care, that statement won’t protect them. On this note, I’ll add that sitters should purchase liability insurance that specifically covers them and their business in case a claim is made against them -- or worse, if they’re injured while caring for someone else’s pet.

Toys for Tots Memorial Day Detachment # 468, Marine Corps League would like to thank all the individuals and organizations that donated toys or money to the annual Toys for Tots campaign. We were able to distribute over 6,400 toys to approximately 1,900 children through our participating partners due to your generosity. Many of these children would not have been able to enjoy a Merry Christmas without your help. All toys that were collected in Ontario and Livingston Counties were distributed within those counties through the various participating agencies. We are very grateful for their help. We look forward to working with you all again next year.

Seasonal [Local Bridge] is BS Why is the [local bridge] closed in the Summer? It makes it pretty tough to ride a bike between [local town] and [local town]! Also, why didn’t they make the thing 20 feet higher than it is? Seems like they could have done a lot better job with that bridge than they did! Would it really be so tough to change the schedule to let people get across in September, October, and April? We need authority to step up I work at a store in my local town and in my dept. we had a bullying situation. This person tried to ignore the individuals who would harass them, made rude comments or just blatantly gave dirty looks just to get them going. It was horrible to see them stressed or in tears because of this unnecessary drama. This person went to the two different managers to tell them what was going on. Their response was “Just ignore it” or “I’m not a HS Principal, just figure out a way to deal with it.” ARE YOU KIDDING ME? When we first start we have to watch videos on harassment and bullying and afterwards we need to sign a paper stating that we watched it. The video clearly states that if you are experiencing uncomfortable situations like this, the person to go to was your manager. And they have the audacity to tell them to just ignore it? Do your job as a manager and help protect the employees you’re supposed to oversee and help keep protected from situations like this!

Here’s a Tip • File this one under safety AND energy smarts: Clean the dryer vent after every load. Clean the dryer vent screen monthly with a gentle soap and water bath. Rinse well and dry thoroughly before inserting back into your dryer. • “I used to struggle with plastic wrap every time I tried to use it. But now, it’s a breeze since I learned to do these two things: One, keep plastic wrap in the freezer. It unrolls evenly, not one side or the other. Two, use a serrated knife to cut it instead of relying on the metal strip down the side of the box. You lay it out on the counter, and just run the knife down the edge you want to cut. Works like magic, and it’s no longer frustrating.” -- G.S. in Georgia • Store an apple or two with your potatoes to keep them from sprouting. Be sure to check them often. Defining Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis and Finding Out How to Treat It

Discover the Human Touch in Hearing Technology

Accepting New Patients.

Lakeville 3513 Thomas Dr., Suite 2

---

DEAR DR. ROACH: Please explain Hashimoto’s disease. I have heard that it is rare, but two colleagues have recently been diagnosed. We all work in a very high-stress field. -- J.H. ANSWER: Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is not at all a rare disease. It occurs in up to 10% of the population and much more frequently in women than men. Although people can be diagnosed at a young age, it is more common at older ages. It is caused by an autoimmune reaction to different parts of the thyroid, with thyroglobulin and thyroid peroxidase antibodies commonly found. TSH receptor antibodies are found on occasion. Hashimoto’s thyroiditis most commonly causes low thyroid levels, although there may be a period of time early in the disease where thyroid levels are high. Not everybody with antibodies will develop low thyroid levels. The thyroid is sometimes enlarged, but a careful exam will usually show that the gland is firm, showing that immune cells have infiltrated the gland. Treatment of Hashimoto’s thyroiditis involves replacing the thyroid hormone that the gland can no longer make. The dose depends on body size to a certain extent, but needs to be adjusted based on lab results. Most people are treated with levothyroxine, also called T4, which is the primary hormone made by the thyroid. T4 is converted to T3 (also called triiodothyronine, the active form of the hormone) in various tissues outside the thyroid. T3 only stays in the body for a short while before it is destroyed, so a once-daily treatment with T4, which lasts longer, allows the body to convert T4 to T3. Most people do very well with T4 treatment. A minority of people cannot efficiently make the active T3 form, in which case-combination treatment can be considered. Unfortunately, T3 must be dosed twice daily. It is thought that stress hormones play a role, since stress does seem to increase the risk of developing an autoimmune thyroid disease like Hashimoto’s.

THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF BEING IN NATURE Nature and cognitive health - A 2010 study published in the American Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease & Other Dementias found that engaged persons with dementia in horticultural therapy-based (HT-based) programming solicited higher rates of participation than traditional activities (TA) programming. In addition, a separate 2013 study in the journal Dementia found that exposure to a therapeutic garden had a positive impact on quality of life for people with dementia. And it’s not just dementia patients who can experience the cognitive benefits of time spent in nature, as the Hagley Museum and Library reports that numerous studies have found exposure to nature improves cognitive function.

Effie May Cottrell Marble: A Legacy of Service, Love, and Community BY SUZIE WELLS

Effie also served as the first chairman for the Bristol Home Bureau unit. Her bimonthly Family Life Letter in the newsletter the County Extension Services sent to Home Bureau members was famously quoted by State and USDA Extension services. According to a 1948 Farm Journal article about Effie, shee was touted as “Farm Neighbor” everyone looked to as the “chipper little whitehaired woman” who’s the ‘spark plug’ of Bristol Valley on Baptist Hill.” So young in spirit, she connected with young and old in the community. In her Family Life Letters, Effie shared wisdom such as: “Love, sympathy, patience are a little like vitamins. They work best when you use them every day.”

E

ffie May Cottrell Marble, born in 1879 and laid to rest in Evergreen Cemetery in Bristol, NY in 1979, led a remarkable life that left an enduring legacy in her community. A glimpse into her life unfolds through various newspaper articles and notes, offering a testament to her dedication to family, community, and public service. According to a reporter in The Daily Messenger in 1954, “Romance began early for the Marbles, who were born in the same town, West Bloomfield, and attended the same class in the three-room village school. Affairs at the West Bloomfield Congregational Church where they worshipped made it possible for many meetings.” On March 21, 1900, daughter of Henry and Mary Plimpton Cottrell, Effie Cottrell married Harry R. Marble in a ceremony at her parents’ home in West Bloomfield. The young couple started their life together on the farm owned by Harry’s father in West Bloomfield before purchasing the farm of Harry’s grandfather in Bristol three years later. According to the Lake Shore News in Feb 1948, illness necessitated the Marbles’ 1920 move to the Village of Baptist Hill, where they acquired the home and general store of the late Addison B. Parmele. The couple operated the store for almost three decades until 1949. Effie and Harry Marble were actively involved in civic affairs and local politics. Over 35 years, Harry served as an assessor, supervisor, and NY State Assemblyman in the Town of Bristol. Effie, too, played a significant role in community service. She organized juvenile grange units in Canandaigua, Oaks Corners, Victor, East Bloomfield, Bristol Valley, Bristol Springs, Naples, Honeoye, and Seneca grade at Stanley, serving as the county juvenile deputy. Her commitment extended to the political arena, where she was a loyal supporter of the Republican party. Both Effie and Harry found time to contribute to the Universalist Church of the Bristol Valley, demonstrating their deep-rooted connection to their faith and community.

“If you show someone how to bake bread and the bread fails, nothing of too great value is lost. But when you speak a word or express an idea it exists for good or ill.” Effie Marble’s dedication to preserving local history is evident in her role in chartering the Bristol Historical Society. Her efforts, recorded in 1953, laid the foundation for a society that focused on local history through presentations, open to both the public and members. This initiative showcased her commitment to the community’s cultural and historical richness. Despite their active public lives, the Marbles were deeply committed to family. They cared for their grandchildren, Jack and Joan Terry, after the passing of their daughter, Ethel Marble Terry. The tragedy of losing another daughter, Dorothy, in a car accident a few years earlier, added a layer of personal grief to their lives. Effie Marble’s enduring legacy is evident in the establishment of the Bristol Library, which, for years, found its home on the second floor of the Marble store. Her impact reached beyond her lifetime, with the Honeoye Falls Times of 1970 recognizing her instrumental role in the library’s establishment. The sentiments expressed in the Farm Journal article capture the essence of Effie’s spirit—forever young and active, endearing her to the Bristol Hill community. Every one of the sources I scoured said that even as Effie spent countless hours in her various roles managing her home, extensive church and grange work, community meetings, Red Cross activities, and helping in the store, Effie “always found time to lend a helping hand to friends and neighbors,” which may explain why she had left such an indelible mark on the community. Effie May Cottrell Marble’s life reflects a profound commitment to family, community, and preserving local history. Her legacy lives on in the hearts of those she touched and in the institutions she helped establish, leaving an indelible mark on the Bristol community.

WAYS TO INCREASE PRODUCTIVITY AT WORK Stop multitasking. Psychologists have determined that multitasking can bog down productivity. According to the American Psychological Association, the mind and brain were not designed for heavy-duty multitasking. Individuals think they’re getting more done, but they may not be handling tasks effectively. Instead, focus on one job at a time and only move on once it is completed.

RELOCATING FOR A NEW JOB Rent your first home. The Allied survey found that 31 percent of respondents indicated the most challenging part of relocating for a job was finding a home, while 29 percent felt acclimating to their new community was the most challenging aspect of their relocation. Adults who rent their first homes upon relocating can remove some of the pressure to find the perfect home, knowing full well their first home in their new community will be temporary. If possible, rent in a location that makes it easy to immerse yourself in your new community, which should make the adjustment easier. In addition, place items that are unnecessary for day-to-day life in storage. Having some of your possessions already packed should make your next move less stressful. Page 28

Throughout the history of commerce, many a deal has been made at the dinner table. Business dinners are a great opportunity to lay a foundation for long, potentially lucrative professional relationships. Etiquette is important when hosting business dinners, as a breach of decorum can derail a relationship before it even begins. Professionals tasked with hosting business dinners can take the following tips to heart before sitting down to break bread with their colleagues. Choose a restaurant that can cater to various diets. Hosting a business dinner can be similar to hosting family during the holiday season, when hosts must cater to guests with various food allergies and dietary restrictions. Asking for such information in advance of a business dinner may seem intrusive to guests, so try to find a restaurant that offers a flexible menu capable of accommodating vegetarians, vegans and guests who might be gluten-free. Avoid restaurants that specialize in styles of cuisine that might be unhealthy or so extraordinary that guests might be hesitant to order anything from the menu. Confirm the reservation. Make the reservation well in advance of the date of the dinner, and don’t forget to confirm the reservation a week beforehand. Confirming a week beforehand gives hosts time to book another reservation should theirs have been canceled by mistake. Arrive at the restaurant before your guests. Hosts should arrive at the restaurant before their guests so they can address any potential issues in advance of the beginning of the dinner. Arriving early gives hosts time to ensure the table set aside for their party is not in a heavily trafficked area of the restaurant, such as adjacent to the kitchen or restroom. Hosts who arrive later than their guests may also give guests the mistaken impression that they are unimportant. Let guests order first. Once everyone has sat down at the table, hosts should allow guests to order first. Doing so saves guests who don’t want to eat that much the potential discomfort of sitting there while their hosts eat an appetizer and/or large entrée. If guests choose to abstain from alcohol, follow suit. If guests want to have a drink, hosts can limit their consumption to a single beverage. Don’t eat too quickly or too slowly. Hosts should try to keep pace with their guests in regard to how quickly or slowly they eat. Guests might feel uncomfortable if they finish first or feel pressured to eat quickly if their hosts finish first. Pay in advance. Business dinner guests do not expect to pay for their meals. While it’s widely accepted that hosts will pay, it can feel awkward to have the bill brought to the table. Upon arriving early, hosts can give their credit cards to the wait staff and ask that they be charged without having the bill brought to the table. If necessary, step away from the table during the meal to sign the bill and address any discrepancies. Business dinners have sparked many successful professional relationships, oftentimes thanks to hosts who took the time to ensure the dinners went off without a hitch.
