DINING OUT WITH INFANTS
New parents often need a respite from the near-constant demands of infants. Dining out can be one of those breaks. When a babysitter is unavailable or if you’re not yet comfortable leaving a little one with someone else, bringing baby along may be possible.
First, find a family-friendly restaurant or try an establishment that has outdoor seating where you can quickly distance yourself from other diners if need be. Time dining out around the baby’s feeding and sleeping schedule. Babies sated by a recent feeding and a relaxing car ride may be more inclined to sleep through your restaurant meal. Just in case, pack an extra bottle or prepare to breastfeed to keep your baby happy.
How to pack a suitcase: Roll pants and tops, adding to suitcase first, toward the handle side. Then add heavy items (shoes, boots) toward the wheel end. Make sure you choose the right size case for the trip; too much room will cause items to shift around.

Honeybees are humble insects that benefit the environment in various ways. Unfortunately, many people lump bees in with wasps and other seemingly “harmful” insects and do whatever is necessary to remove them from their properties. But it’s important to be mindful of the beneficial roles bees play and to take steps to maintain healthy habitats so they can thrive.
Bees are one of the most important pollinators of flowers, crops and fruit trees. These small insects can make or break entire food supplies. They also pollinate clover and alfalfa that provide feed for cattle. Some experts place the economic value of bees at roughly $15 billion per year.
A consortium of universities and research laboratories that reported to The White House in 2015 found that beekeepers lost 42.1 percent of their colonies between 2014 and 2015. Bee populations continue to decline. According to the conservation organization Save the Bees, recent surveys suggest close to a 99 percent loss in bees over the last 150 years, primarily due to increasing agricultural intensification.

Testing can determine if radon is present in a home. Homeowners can rely on professional companies or purchase self-testing kits at home improvement retailers. If a test comes back positive for high levels, conduct a follow-up test before taking any measures to fix the problem. Unusual weather can increase radon levels. If repeat testing yields the same results, efforts to reduce radon levels are necessary.
Homeowners must keep in mind that no two situations are the same and various techniques may be necessary to reduce radon levels in a home. BRICK HOMES FIGHT FIRES THE LONGEST
(NAPSI)—Firefighters report that it takes about an hour and a half for a fire to breach a brick home-as compared to fiber cement in under an hour and vinyl siding in just minutes.
Choosing brick exteriors to protect their own firehouses, firefighters say brick homes help slow the spread, offering the extra few minutes to help save lives and property as this brief video shows.
While the International Residential Code (IRC) does not require cladding on singlefamily homes to have a fire rating,the International Building Code (IBC) acknowledges that fired-clay brick has tested to provide a minimum one-hour fire resistance rating alone, regardless of backing material.This is something that synthetic materials—such as fiber cement—cannot claim.
Primarily made of clay, brick is classified as a noncombustible material that will not burn, melt or combust.
In a one-hour severe fire test conducted independently for the Brick Industry Association (BIA), vinyl siding burned after only 18 minutes, fiber cement failed within one hour and fired-clay brick withstood the flames after one hour. The test was conducted in accordance with ASTM E119, the Standard Test Methods for Fire Tests of Building Construction and Materials.

Though office work might not be the first profession individuals think of in relation to elevating one’s cancer risk, sitting at a desk for most of the day can increase a person’s risk for cancer. According to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, sitting for most of the day without engaging in physical activity puts individuals at increased risk for cancer. How much extra risk does that entail? Though no two individuals are the same, studies have equated sitting for eight hours a day without any physical activity to the risk posed by obesity and smoking. The DFCI notes that sitting over long periods of time has been known to cause increased blood pressure, high cholesterol and excess body fat around the waist, each of which have been identified as factors that increase a person’s risk for cancer.

With the number of electric motorcycles gaining popularity and getting more powerful, there is a concern for safety from a few points of view.

A traditional (gas powered) motorcycle must be inspected yearly, licensed, insured and ridden with its headlight on by a rider who has taken and passed a rider’s test and must be wearing a DOT approved helmet and follow the same rules of the road that cars and trucks follow.
Some E-Bikes can go over 40 miles per hour and do not have the same requirements as a traditional motorcycle nor is the rider subject to the same regulations as the traditional motorcycle rider is.
I have observed E-Bikes riding on sidewalks, riding against traffic on roads, passing other vehicles and not safely following the rules of the road. I think E-Bikes are a great form of transportation and look forward to when they are safer for the rider and other vehicles on the road.

I am struck by the sense of entitlement exhibited by many [local road] residents here, as they use cones and other claim staking devices to commandeer public property for personal use during July festivities.
Fundamentally, a property right is a negative right - the right to exclude others from using an asset. If I were to park my car in your driveway or on your lawn in July or any other time because I feel entitled to do so, I'm sure you would be justifiably brusque in informing me of your right to exclude me. (You might even growl "GET OFF MY LAWN.") In contrast, you have no right to exclude me from using an open parking space on the right-ofway of a public highway. Please explain why you think otherwise. And don't whine it's because of the property taxes you pay. I think the lake towns should ban the practice of coning public parking spaces. OR create a database of the public parking spaces and auction them off online as leases to the highest bidders.

PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM
Many pet owners would never intentionallyharmtheircompanion animals. In fact, pet owners often go above and beyond to ensure their animals are well cared for and content. However, many well-meaning people may be inadvertently harming their pets with something they provide each and every day: food.
Obesity is on the rise among pets. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention says that 54 percent of dogs and 59 percent of cats in the United States were categorized as overweight or obese in 2016. That marks an increase from 52.5 percent and 58.3 percent, respectively, from four years ago. The majority of veterinarians think that pet obesity is a significant problem and nearly half of pet owners admit that their vets have discussed a pet’s ideal weight with them during pet health visits.
How to protect your pets from extreme heat
Extreme heat can be unpleasant for anyone, and pets are no exception. While it’s easy for men and women to detect if their bodies are responding negatively to heat, those warning signs may not be so prevalent in pets, who may suffer in silence as the mercury continues to rise. Pet owners must pay special attention to their pets on hot days, which the Humane Society of the United States notes can be both uncomfortable and dangerous for pets.

Man’s Restless Legs Raise up to a Foot in the Air at Night
DEAR DR. ROACH: Do you have any recommendations to stop restless legs at night? My husband has been to many doctors to find a cause or a solution to stop them. His legs have raised up as much as a foot in the air at night, constantly jumping and causing many sleepless nights. No one seems to have a solution for him. --

ANSWER: Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a common condition where people have the urge to move their legs. It’s usually worse at night and associated with an unpleasant sensation that is relieved by movement. People with RLS often have involuntary jerking movements of their legs during sleep, unimaginatively called “periodic limb movements of sleep.”
Your husband may have these periodic limb movements without RLS, which is then considered periodic limb movement disorder. Treatment recommendations require an exact diagnosis. I often see his condition misdiagnosed or continue on for years without a diagnosis. The diagnosis is confirmed by a sleep study where the limb movements are recorded and characterized. Once the diagnosis is made, there are a few important considerations:
The first is that this condition often coincides with iron deficiency, which should be looked for and treated, if necessary. (The underlying cause for iron deficiency also needs to be found.) It may take weeks or even months after iron replacement for the leg movements to get better. Prior to medication treatment, a review of any medicines your husband takes is appropriate, as some can cause similar symptoms. Regular exercise, avoidance of caffeine and alcohol, and good sleep (ironically) can all improve symptoms in some people.
If medicine is needed, medications like pregabalin or pramipexole may be the first-line treatment, depending on the results of the sleep study and how intermittent the symptoms are. A new therapy called neurostimulation is a drug-free approach that has been shown to be effective. One device, the tonic motor activation, was approved by the Food and Drug Administration for RLS and will hopefully be available shortly.
But there are many experts in this condition. He should see a sleep medicine expert.

THE DANGERS OF BELLY FAT
What’s so bad about belly fat? Seeing belly fat as a merely cosmetic concern overlooks the effects it has on overall health.According to the Mayo Clinic, belly fat is not limited to the extra layer of padding just below the skin known as subcutaneous fat. Belly fat also includes visceral fat,which means it extends to deep inside the abdomen and surrounds internal organs. Johns Hopkins Medicine notes that visceral fat in the belly is very close to the liver, which can turn it into cholesterol. From there, the fat goes through the bloodstream and may collect along the walls of the arteries, potentially contributing to a hardening and narrowing of the arteries known as atherosclerosis. The complications of atherosclerosis depends on which arteries are affected, but they can include an assortment of diseases that affect the arteries and a greater risk for aneurysms and chronic kidney disease.
Johns Hopkins Medicine notes that visceral fat is just as harmful for the heart as high blood pressure and smoking. So while efforts to reduce belly fat may initially be embraced to improve appearance, individuals should know that reducing fat in their midsections also can reduce their risk for a host of conditions, some of which are deadly.

ECelebrate Independence Day Every Day with Al Sigl

ach July, Al Sigl Community of Agencies highlights the stories of individuals who are leading more independent lives with the help of Al Sigl Member Agencies:
Latrice, who was featured in one of Al Sigl’s earliest Independence Day campaigns, uses every opportunity she can to educate others that people of all abilities have powerful stories to share. She helped create a unique creative writing partnership between CP Rochester and the University of Rochester called the Inspiration Project, which pairs participants with college students. Now in its 14th year, Latrice remains an integral part of the collaboration to highlight the experiences and aspirations of people with special needs.
Jeff moved to Rochester from Long Island 20 years ago and has been with CP Rochester ever since. Along with living in one of the CP Rochester houses, Jeff attends the Day Habilitation Program. He likes to help out and stay busy. At the Winton Campus, he helps deliver packages, monitor equipment, and other important jobs. When not working, Jeff enjoys visiting his friends and being creative through his artwork and storytelling.
Emily was a Division 1 Field Hockey athlete going into her senior year when she experienced a tonic-clonic seizure while training. A few months later, she woke up in the hospital a er a second seizure and wasdiagnosedwithepilepsy. at’s when “life took a bit of a le turn.” Instead of playing field hockey in Europe a er college, she moved back to Upstate NY to be closer to family. Emily found Empowering People’s Independence (EPI) and joined a structured support group for adults with epilepsy. She says, “Meeting other adults with epilepsy and working through the challenges and emotions of being capable of working and living an independent life while being unable to drive has been extremely helpful.”
Jakobe is a two-year-old learning to communicate with others at Rochester Hearing & Speech Center. He has learned to identify photos on the screen and connect them to words to ask for items at snack time, to listen to his favorite songs in class, and more. “Using this device has made him much happier, as he can express his opinions now,” shares Speech Language Pathologist Debra Cecere. “It goes everywhere with him – from class to home and then to the next program he will attend when he ages out of Early Intervention.” Melissa, RHSC Special Educator, adds, “Jakobe’s frustration levels have significantly decreased since learning to use his communication device. He lets us know his needs and wants.”
Marianna recently moved to Rochester from Poland with her husband and two children. In addition to being a full-time student at SUNY Brockport, Marianna is learning to drive using Low-Tech Hand Controls with Rochester Rehabilitation Center’s DriveOn Program. e push/pull hand controls and le -hand wheel spinner help Marianna become independent in a vehicle without using her lower extremities. Marianna is 15 hours into her training and aims to obtain her license by the end of
