Mother is a name held sacred By most mortals of the earth; It means great love and sacrifice From the very day of birth, A love that’s so full of beauty, So tender, so very true!
Something, seemingly, from Heaven That has come to me and you. There’s no love so understanding And so faithful to the end
As a Mother’s love—God bless her!— That to us our Lord did send.
~Gertrude Tooley Buckingham, “Mother” (1940s)

ITEMS TO IMPROVE OUTDOOR LIVING SPACES
Features that can keep homeowners and their guests warm after the sun sets include outdoor fireplaces and firepits. A 2016 survey conducted by the American Society of Landscape Architects found that fireplaces and firepits were the most popular outdoor design element in 2016. Such features can provide a focal point in the backyard while also extending the outdoor living season into autumn and even early winter.
It’s important to expect the unexpected when embarking on home renovations. Budgeting for hidden costs, expecting delays and coping with the upheaval to daily schedules are par for the remodeling course. However, the end result is often well worth the time and effort.
WAYS TO MAKE HOMES SAFER
Repair loose floorboards and pull carpet taut if it has started to stretch out. Address cracks outdoors and ensure that patio stones, bricks and pavers are secure and level to reduce tripping hazards. Fix areas of the landscape where water may pool and freeze, creating potential hazards.

Stripe smut
The University of Maryland Extension notes that stripe smut primarily poses a threat to Kentucky bluegrass that is older than three years. Pale green streaks that run parallel to the veins in the leaves and leaf sheaths are symptomatic of stripe smut, which tends to be noticed in spring and fall, when weather is cool. As the disease progresses, stripes turn black or a silvery gray, causing the leaf blade to shred and curl. After the blades have shred, they turn brown and die. The grass thins because stripe smut makes it vulnerable to problems like drought.
REMEDY LANDSCAPE DRAINAGE PROBLEMS
Gutters and downspouts are designed to move rainwater away from the home. Too often, however, gutters and downspouts become clogged or do not work effectively. Overflowing gutters will transfer rainwater down the side of a home, where it can puddle at the foundation. This water can ultimately suffocate a lawn, and it may cause interior damage to the home as well.
First, inspect and clean all gutters. Leaves, nests, sticks, and even dead animals can block the flow of water in a gutter. Test downspouts by running hose water from the top of the gutter. Downspouts should be pointed away from the home and may need to be extended so they direct water away from the dwelling.

PEST CONTROL
TELLING SIGNS COMMON INSECTS ARE INFESTING A LAWN
Cutworms: The lawn care experts at Scotts® note that cutworms are moth larvae that hide in the thatch layer of a lawn during the day before emerging at night to feed on grass blades. Patches of brown grass between one and two inches in width is a sign of cutworm infestation. Homeowners who notice a growing number of birds pecking away in their lawns may have a cutworm infestation, which can be confirmed by peeling up a section of damaged grass and looking for cutworms, which are brown, gray or black and tend to be around two inches long.

HOW TO CONSERVE WATER AT HOME
Conservation is an essential component of an eco-friendly lifestyle. Conserving the planet’s natural resources can have a profound impact on the planet, and conserving at home is a great way for men and women to get the ball rolling on their conservation efforts.
One of the most effective ways to conserve at home is to reduce water consumption. Few people give much thought to how much water they consume at home, as water bills tend to be considerably lower than other utilities like energy and phone. But even if efforts to conserve water at home may not make a dramatic impact on monthly utility bills, many measures can go a long way toward preserving one of the planet’s most precious resources.

HOW TO BE A BETTER HEALTH CARE CONSUMER
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH
By Keith Roach, M.D.
Vocal Cord
Becomes Paralyzed After a Cold
DEAR DR. ROACH: My daughter, 45, has had a paralyzed left vocal cord for about a year now. We have been to an ear, nose and throat (ENT) doctor who ran at least a half dozen tests, including several scans. These didn’t show a reason for the problem, and everything else appeared to be normal. She had a cold before this happened, and we were treating her for a lingering sore throat.
The doctor has told us that there is nothing to be done to unfreeze the vocal cord. I would love your opinion on this matter, as she has a lot of pain associated with it, and she coughs trying to get out what feels stuck in there. -- K.P.
ANSWER: Paralysis of the vocal cord is often the result of damage to the nerve that leads to the vocal cord; there’s one on each side. The left side is particularly vulnerable and may be damaged during surgery (especially thyroid surgery), but a big fear is that a mass (especially a cancerous one) can damage the nerve and cause paralysis of the vocal cord. This is why her doctor did a CT scan.
There are other less-common causes, such as nerve damage from other occurrences (stroke and multiple sclerosis); inflammatory diseases (lupus and others); and infections (such as Lyme disease). It sounds like the ENT doctor looked for other possibilities such as these. (But if not, then it should be done.)
When a cause can’t be found, we call it “idiopathic unilateral vocal cord paralysis.” This often seems to happen after a viral infection, and it sounds like your daughter might have had one. Many people with this condition get better by themselves during the first year, but now that it has been about a year for her, she isn’t likely to get better without treatment.
I am not an expert in treatment, but ENT surgeons have several types of surgical interventions to improve hoarseness, cough and discomfort. It’s time to go back to her ENT doctor or get referred to an expert in the surgical treatment of this condition. ***
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu.

Learn about the benefits associated with preventive care. Many health insurance plans offer rebates to consumers who have memberships at fitness facilities and use those memberships a certain number of times in a set period of time. These benefits aren’t just ways to save money. They’re also powerful motivators to engage in preventive health care, which is one of the best ways for health care consumers to save money over the long haul.
Promote Healthy Kidneys
Healthy kidneys are something many people take for granted. But those who want to do everything they can to keep their kidneys healthy can consider the following tips.
• Stay hydrated, but avoid overhydration. Adequate hydration definitely promotes healthy kidneys. But overhydrating has not been proven to enhance kidney function. Adults should drink between four and six glasses of water per day.
• Exercise. Regular exercise benefits various parts of the human body, including the kidneys. High blood pressure and diabetes are two of the biggest risk factors for kidney disease, and regular exercise can reduce a person’s risk of both conditions. However, overexertion can strain the kidneys, so avoid going too hard.
• Speak with a physician before taking vitamin supplements or herbal remedies. Excessive supplementation can harm the kidneys. Discuss any supplements or herbals remedies with a physician before taking them.
• Quit smoking. Smoking decreases the blood flow in the kidneys, decreasing their ability to function at optimal capacity. Smoking also increases a person’s risk of high blood pressure and cancer of the kidneys.
• Eat healthy. A healthy diet decreases a person’s risk for high blood pressure and diabetes. Adhering to a healthy diet and controlling portion sizes can help control weight and blood pressure and contribute to healthy kidneys as well.
• Get screened. Adults who have been diagnosed with high blood pressure or diabetes should make sure their physicians screen for kidney dysfunction during routine appointments.

THIS SPRING, IT’S ALL ABOUT THAT BASS FISHING -AND YOUR BASIC GEAR
FIND THE RIGHT PANTS. Spring days on the water are usually an all-day event, and call for versatility in your clothing. To that point, pants that convert to shorts are ideal. Like shirts, pants should be stain-resistant.Additionally,the pants should have plenty of pockets (with zippers) to carry anything extra. If you don’t have access to a boat or dock, extend your fishing range with a good pair of fishing waders.

Here’s a Tip
• “My roses really look beautiful. When I am cutting stems to put in a bouquet, I use a clothespin to grip the stem. It saves me from getting pricked by thorns, because it has a bit of reach to it.” -- L.E. in Georgia
• For even distribution in sowing seeds for your garden, use a saltshaker for tiny seeds. You can get a cheese shaker for larger seeds, if necessary.
• To keep your brick walkway clear of grass and weeds, sprinkle salt in the cracks.
• “If you have to cut a nylon cord or shoelace, you can use a flame to melt the end into a nub that won’t run or fray. Use a little heat and press it together on a hard surface very briefly. It works fast!” -- R.S. in Maine

Bereasonablewhenpricingitems. Be objective in your assessment of your things. What has value to you may not have as much value to someone else. Pricing items at one-third of their initial cost is a good starting point. This leaves room for negotiation.
Each mumbered row contains two clues and two answers. e two answers differ from each other by only one letter, which has already been inserted. For example, if you exchange the A from MASTER for an I, you get MISTER. Do not change the order of the letters.
HOW SMALL BUSINESSES CAN MAKE THE MOST OF LOCAL MARKETS
Do your research. Chances are business owners can find a number of festival or marketplace opportunities in or around their communities each month. Some of these festivals may be large scale events like annual Christmas bazaars, while others might be more toned down affairs that occur each week. Business owners can research local festivals, paying particular attention to how communities market the events and which businesses attend them. Community turnout is another significant factor to consider. Such research can help business owners determine which festivals best suit their businesses and what they’re hoping to accomplish.

VENT BRIGHTER
Thank you to those who sat with my grandfather!
Last weekend our beloved Popop had a fall outside Lift Bridge Bookstore. Our family wants to thank Joey from Lift Bridge and the Girl Scout who sat with him to wait for an ambulance. We are grateful to you and the bookstore itself who gave us a phone call! He is doing great!
Door slamming neighbors, please be mindful!
Starting at 7am or earlier, my neighbors slam their car doors repeatedly. I don’t even understand how or why this is necessary! If you are making loud noises during the village quiet hours, be mindful that others might work late shifts, have babies, or just wanna sleep!
Corporate America! WAKE UP!
Kindness Can Come to a Person When Least Expected
My wife and I are senior citizens and at 6:30pm I realized I had forgotten to go to the store to get breakfast items for the next morning. I grabbed my car keys and told my wife that I’d be back in a “jiffy.” I got to the store in 5 minutes, parked near the entrance and ran inside, gathering my few items in a “jiff.” However, there were only two checkouts with a cashier. Both of them had customers with loaded carts that they were about to unload. Also, all the self checkouts were all taken with people in line. As I got behind a woman who was about to unload all her items onto the conveyor belt, she saw me and allowed me to go ahead of her. Then as I was about to pay, the cashier said the woman behind me would pay. I thanked the lady, but declined. At home I told my wife what occurred. She stated it was probably because the lady saw me with shirt worn inside out and wrinkled with my hair sticking up.
I am tired of robot telephone servers who can rarely help me with a problem. I am tired of too few workers doing too much work and thus not readily available to assist me, whether on the phone or in person. I am tired of being placed on hold for too long. I am tired of being pressured to go paperless when in fact the paper remains at my expense. I am tired of being pressured to go cashless with everything when I am not confident that my accounts will not be compromised. People need to work! Hire enough staff to serve your customers! Stop trying to get the most profit at the expense of customers and staff! Customers will be happy, your people will be happy, your business will thrive, and perhaps America will be the nation she once was and no longer beholden to foreign nations, especially China. God will bless us once again if and when we return to being just and ethical in the workplace.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that most incidents at home occur where there is water, such as in the bathroom or kitchen; heat or flame, like in the kitchen or around the grill; toxic substances, like those found in medicine cabinets or beneath kitchen sinks; and in places where kids can fall, such as on staircases.

WHAT CONSUMERS CAN DO TO SUPPORT LOCAL FARMERS
Buy fresh foods at your local farmers market. Farmers markets are many foodies’ favorite places, but they aren’t exclusive to individuals with a passion for food. Everyone needs to eat, so why not eat foods grown locally, which are generally more fresh and appetizing than imported fruits and vegetables sold at chain grocery stores? Even individuals who don’t typically eat fresh fruit and vegetables can find something delectable at a local farmers market, where anything from homemade tomato sauces to locally raised fresh beef and pork might be on sale.

Ellen Foos Returns to Webster, Crafting Verse with Wit and Wisdom
BY SUZIE WELLS
As founder and publisher of Ragged Sky Press, the words of Webster’s Ellen Foos weave through the tapestry of life with grace and insight and she has carved a niche for herself in the literary world, leaving an indelible mark with her evocative verses. Working for Ecco, Graywolf, and Princeton University Press, she has been surrounded by literature.
Foos’ foray into poetry began as a renaissance, a resurgence ignited during her pursuit of a BA a er a 25-year hiatus. “I started writing poetry in earnest pretty late in life,” she says, explaining that she only began as part of a writing class required to finish the abandoned degree. Her debut collection, “Little Knitted Sister,” published in 2006, marked the inception of a literary odyssey that continues to unfold.
Reflecting on her poetic genesis, Foos fondly recalls her favorite poetry teacher, a collegiate reminiscence colored by the backdrop of Phoebe Snow’s “ e Poetry Man.” Amidst the pages of the NortonPoetryAnthology at the time, she found inspiration for her poetic expedition.
Foos finds inspiration in the tapestry of existence, navigating the realms of childhood nostalgia, familial bonds, and the panorama of the natural world. She says, “I try to add a little wry humor or biting wit if I can,” evoking both levity and introspection. Foos eschews formal style to write short lyric poetry, brevity capturing the essence of fleeting moments.
Foos’ writing habits reflect a sense of ritualistic devotion, with mornings serving as her most creative time. Evolving from the constraints of professional life when she’d write creatively during breaks, now in retirement, she immerses herself in workshops, leveraging the camaraderie of fellow wordsmiths to stoke the fires of motivation. With a process involving editing as she goes, Foos sometimes worries that she’s condensed her ideas too much, confessing the perennial struggle of every artist in pursuit of perfection.
Foos finds solace and inspiration in the literary community, mostnotablyinvolvedwiththeweeklyUS1Writer’sCooperative, the annual is Broken Shore journal, monthly reading series, as well as residencies at MacDowell and the Vermont Studio Center. Such networks serve as crucibles of creativity and camaraderie.
Coordinating events and reading series, publishing Ragged Sky Press, and organizing Ragged Sky Press poets for the annual NYC Poetry Festival reflect Foos’ commitment to fostering literary culture and community.
To Foos, poetry transcends artistic expression, instead serving as a transformative force in everyday life. She says, “Children are very lucky if their parents read to them, especially poetry. When given a chance in school to write poetry, it opens
up real channels of comfort and creativity. Adults who read poetry are better listeners and observers in other aspects of their lives.”
To developing poets, Foos offers sage advice: “Don’t be shy! Don’t be intimidated by the great poets. ere will be nuggets of wisdom once you get started and those are what you will enjoy developing.”
As Foos embarks on a new chapter back in Western NY, her website, raggedsky.com, serves as a beacon for enthusiasts eager to immerse themselves in her poetic tapestry. She weaves threads of experience into the fabric of human consciousness. With each stanza, she invites us to embrace shared humanity.
Packet Drawer
I love people who organize with clarity, light bulbs in one place, batteries in another, things that keep forever, that never spoil but sometimes become obsolete.
Ann Page cinnamon in a tin box never ages, while my skin looks progressively different in the bright sun, like a mold-infested leaf.
I think of things I have stored away, buttons I will never sew back on, panties never to be flashed before a lover. Still, I might use pouches of mustard, mayo and ketchup. Saving for a rainy day, bringing home party le overs, hoarding what must only bring tears to loved ones in the days a er you die.

PAW’S CORNER
By Sam Mazzotta
When tick removal goes wrong
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: A er taking my Terrier “Hank” for a walk around my subdivision yesterday, I noticed when taking off his leash that a tick had attached itself to the back of his neck! I don’t even know where it came from; we stayed on the sidewalk. I quickly tried to remove it with tweezers, but Hank is kind of a wiggly guy, and just as I tugged on the tick, he moved and the body of the tick broke off! It looks like the tick’s head is still embedded in his skin. What can I do? Will this hurt Hank?
-- Joe K. in Sarasota Springs, New York
DEAR JOE: Since the tick’s body was removed, and you noticed it pretty quickly, Hank’s risk of contracting a tick-borne illness is low. However, an infection might develop where the tick’s head is still embedded.
Treat the bite spot with an over-the-counter antibiotic ointment. Monitor the spot for a few days. ere may be a little redness around the bite area as the skin reacts to the foreign object, and with luck, the head may be pushed out enough for you to grab it with the tweezers and remove.
When should you contact Hank’s veterinarian? If you aren’t able to remove the tick head a er a few days, it’s time to make an appointment with the vet. Or, if the redness spreads or if Hank seems distressed, lethargic or otherwise out of sorts, get him to the vet right away.
Removing a tick as soon as it’s found is important, because even though dogs can be vaccinated against Lyme Disease, other tick-borne diseases can be transmitted to your pet. Ticks are becoming active earlier in the year, so consider starting flea and tick prevention earlier, too.

THE GROWTH OF THE SOLAR EMPLOYMENT SECTOR
According to the Solar Foundation’s National Solar Jobs Census 2016, there were 260,077 solar workers working at 8,601 solar companies in the United States in 2016. The census also found that the five states with the most solar jobs in 2016 were California, Massachusetts, Texas, Nevada, and Florida. Twenty-eight percent of state solar workers in 2016 were females, making women the largest demographic in the solar industry. Latinos and Hispanics (17.2 percent), Asians or Pacific Islanders (9.1 percent), and veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces (9 percent) rounded out the top four demographics employed by the solar industry. Of the 260,077 solar industry jobs in 2016, more than 137,000 were classified as installation jobs that paid a median wage of $26 per hour. With roughly 38,000 jobs in 2016, solar manufacturing was the next biggest employer of workers in the solar industry.

MAKE MEALTIME MORE ECO-FRIENDLY
An eco-friendly lifestyle is anything but selfless, as such a way of life can pay both immediate and long-term dividends, helping men and women in the present day while also contributing to healthier futures for generations to come.
As environmentalists and eco-friendly ordinary Joes no doubt already know, there are myriad ways to go green. Even mealtime at home can be made considerably more eco-friendly with relatively little effort.
Stop handwashing dishes. Men and women who dread having to hand wash their dishes after a nice meal have an ally in science. A study from researchers in Europe found that people who handwashed place settings for 12 people used as much as 27 gallons of water, while washing the same amount of place settings in a dishwasher required just four gallons of water. So instead of standing over a sink and washing dishes by hand each night, men and women can simply load up the dishwasher, making sure only to run it when it’s full so even less water is wasted.
Avoid the stove when possible. Empty nesters, couples without children or single men and women who want to save energy come mealtime can use toaster ovens in lieu of traditional stoves when preparing small meals. According to EnergyStar®, toaster ovens consume between onethird to one-half the amount of energy as conventional electric ovens when cooking small meals, making them a far more eco-friendly option for men and women accustomed who typically cook small meals for one or two people.
Shop with reusable shopping bags. Cooks know that great meals begin at the grocery store, so there’s no reason why eco-friendly cooking cannot begin there as well. Estimates suggest that as many as 100 billion plastic bags are used in the United States alone each year. EnvironmentMassachusetts reports that such bags are used for an average of 12 minutes, even though their life expectancy is as high as 1,000 years. By relying on reusable cloth shopping bags instead of single-use plastic bags, shoppers can dramatically reduce the carbon footprint of cooking their own meals.
Recycle materials. Glass jars, plastic butter tubs, milk cartons, and other items necessary to prepare meals at home are all recyclable. Many local governments have weekly if not biweekly pickups of recyclable materials, making it easier than ever to ensure these items are given new life after beingused.Menandwomenwhoresideinareaswithoutsuchpickupscan go it alone, collecting recyclable materials and periodically transporting them to nearby recycling centers.
Mealtime provides a host of opportunities for eco-conscious men and women to embrace practices that protect the planet.
