* Painting season is in full swing at my house, and here are my two favorite painting tips: One is to lightly soap the windows (glass only) and let it dry. Any paint splatters will land on the soap, which can be easily wiped away when the paint is all dry. The other is to give locks, hinges and doorknobs a light coat of petroleum jelly. It works the same way, and when polished away, it leaves a nice shine to hardware.

* Here’s a great spring facial: Split an avocado, mash half of it and use it as a mask. Let sit for up to five minutes, then rinse away with warm water.

* Cleaning windows? Use a nylon net scrubbie from the kitchen to get rid of bugs from screens. It also works really well to scrub bugs off the car grille or car window.

* Here’s a great tip you can use when parallel parking in front of a storefront. Check the reflection to see if it looks like there’s room when backing in or pulling forward. -- O.W. in California

When should I prune raspberries to ensure a good harvest this year? Did I miss that timing? What other plants should be tended to in spring to ensure successful production this season?

Raspberries should be pruned in late winter or early spring (February - April). We recommend leaving 4 - 6 canes per square foot at this time. For the ease of picking, a raspberry patch will be between 1 - 3 feet wide; if the patch is wider, consider cutting back or pulling out canes that widen the patch too much. When pruning out canes, cut them at the base. First, remove canes that have bulges in them-- these are usually caused

by cane borers, and the internal damage causes the canes to collapse once they become heavy with fruit. Second, remove all canes that have pale, dried-out looking bark, as those have fruited and will not yield fruit again. Next, remove the thinnest canes. Ideally you will be left with 4-6 thick, sturdy canes. If those canes have little remnants of fruit on their tips, you may cut the tips back to encourage more branching.

Elderberry is another berry crop that can be pruned in the same time period. Cut out canes that are 3 years old and over. Inspect the bark on the remaining canes,

removing areas with cankers (sunken, discolored lesions) and canes that have holes in them. When cutting back diseased canes such as these, look into the cross-section of the pruning cut. If you observe browning or uneven tissue in the pruning cut, continue cutting back until it is uniform.

Berry plants that should be pruned before their leaves emerge include: blueberry, currant and gooseberry, seaberry, and pawpaw.

For example, a home improvement store may offer an immediate 25 percent discount to customers who sign up for a store credit card and use the card to make a purchase.As enticing as such savings can be, consumers should recognize that a recent study by CreditCards.com found that the average retail credit card APR is 25.9 percent. That’s more than 6 percent higher than a general purpose credit card. Consumers who cannot pay balances in full each month could end up paying much more in interest if they use retail credit cards instead of general purpose cards.

Why Are Seniors Targeted for Scams?

In one year alone, seniors lost over $3 billion to scammers, and it’s gotten worse every year. e 60-69 age group was bad enough, but the dollar losses rose even more a er age 70, and much more a er age 80.

Why are we targeted?

e thieves believe two things about us: We’re all rich and have great credit, having worked our whole lives, and, worst of all, that we won’t tell anyone if we lose money to them. ose two things alone make us constant targets.

All scammers have to do to turn us into victims, according to a study by Stanford and AARP, is raise our emotions. Whether happiness or anger, it doesn’t matter, because either will push us to hand over our information or our money.

For example, scammers will say we’ve won a big prize, like the lottery, but to claim that prize we need to send them processing fees in advance. We think about that prize and our good sense goes out the window.

Emotions come into play when a scammer calls pretending to be a grandchild in trouble. We’re asked to send money right away. We’re upset, and we do. But the emotional pleas for money don’t end there. Romance scams are huge, and too many lonely seniors send cash to their new love without questioning it.

Scammers who pretend to be from the government, such as the IRS, who frighten us into paying money, raise our emotions as well.

e list of scams directed at the elderly is nearly endless: investments, lottery wins, IRS tax bills, low-cost prescriptions, charities, tech repair, cemetery debts, romance, reverse mortgage, help signing up for Medicare, auto warranties ...

Beware. If you allow yourself to be scammed once, they will be back, because you’ll be on a list of people who can be fooled.

Dear Jim: It’s di cult to help overweight pets lose those extra pounds, and it’s clear that Seeker has no qualms about complaining about it!

Since you’re working from home, one way to mitigate the howling is to implement a divert-and-reward system to take his mind o his empty bowl. In essence, keep Seeker away from the kitchen and as busy as your schedule allows.

Immediately a er his breakfast, close o the kitchen. Use a baby gate or shut the door, and hide the food bowl out of sight. Take Seeker outside for a short walk to burn o extra energy and a few calories. If you’re in a high-rise apartment or another situation where going outside frequently is more di cult, opt for a ve-minute training and play session instead.

While you’re working, Seeker should be separated from the kitchen -- either in a closed-o room or with you in your o ce (but in his own corner) -- and given plenty of toys to chew on. Spend time with Seeker on each break from work. Play, work on basic obedience, or just hang out. Once you’re nished with work for the day, take Seeker out for a long walk before giving him dinner.

Stick with the diet prescribed by the vet. Be patient but consistent with Seeker to change his behavior. He can and will lose the weight, because you care about him!

Patient With Risk of Breast Cancer Questions Safety of Yearly MRI

DEAR DR. ROACH: Due to a slight genetic risk of breast cancer (my Tyrer-Cuzick Model score was 20.6%), my doctor wants me to get breast MRIs with contrast annually. I am concerned about long-term exposure to the gadolinium-based contrast dye. I’ve learned that this heavy metal is considered safe, but traces of it can be stored in the brain and other body tissues.

I am 49 and in very good health. I also get mammograms annually. I consulted my doctor about spacing out my MRIs every two to three years, but he said I should have an MRI every year. So I could be getting these MRIs for the next 35 or so years. Do the benefits of contrast dye outweigh the harm in a person with my health profile? -- S.A.

ANSWER: I’m afraid I don’t have a good answer for you. It is true that most authorities recommend an intensive breast cancer surveillance program for women at a high risk of breast cancer, in the range of a 20% to 25% lifetime risk. (The average risk for developing breast cancer for a woman born today is estimated to be about 13%.)

The Tyrer-Cuzick model of estimating breast cancer risk tends to give higher estimates than the other commonly used models, such as the BRCAPRO. Other models may not put you over the threshold for intensive screening with MRIs, which is usually combined with mammograms. The question about gadolinium (the chemical element used in the contrast dye for MRIs) is important because some people do store gadolinium in various tissues, including the brain, but the clinical significance of this is unknown. (People with kidney disease can develop a skin disease due to gadolinium, so they aren’t recommended to have MRIs with gadolinium.)

Although gadolinium can stay in the body for months or years, there has been no evidence of harm from gadolinium in brain tissue, despite these agents having been used for many years. Some agents have less retention than others. The U.S. FDA has mandated patient guides for these contrast agents, which relay the information above.

Given that there is a probable benefit to intensive screening for breast cancer in your case due to your high genetic risk, and no more than a theoretical risk from gadolinium, I believe that the benefits outweigh the risks, but I can’t say that with complete certainty.

EAST AVON - BELFAST, NY - Passed away peacefully on April 18, 2023 at age 89. He is survived by his daughter, Debbie (Harry) Hudson; granddaughter, Barbara (Terry) Pignato; grandson, Brian Hudson (Jenna Divincezo); great-granddaughters, Nina, Breanna, Alyssa Pignato; brother, William Wagner; sister, Mona Craft; several nieces and nephews; many numerous friends of whom he cherished including lifelong friends, Bill Vonglis and Gary Jameson; also his furry faithful companion “Sophie.” He was predeceased by his loving wife, Betty of 52 years, who passed in 2007. Ray lost his long and courageous battle to cancer.He was a NavyVeteran and a longtime member of the American Legion Post 294 of East Avon.

PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM

Many pet owners would never intentionallyharmtheircompanion animals. In fact, pet owners often go above and beyond to ensure their animals are well cared for and content. However, many well-meaning people may be inadvertently harming their pets with something they provide each and every day: food.

Obesity is on the rise among pets. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention says that 54 percent of dogs and 59 percent of cats in the United States were categorized as overweight or obese in 2016. That marks an increase from 52.5 percent and 58.3 percent, respectively, from four years ago. The majority of veterinarians think that pet obesity is a significant problem and nearly half of pet owners admit that their vets have discussed a pet’s ideal weight with them during pet health visits.

Store music

Does anyone else notice the obscene and loud music in many stores? I hope store managers see this post. Most people over the age of 40 are the ones that actually go out to shop, the rest buy online and never set foot in a store. Sometimes I would like to stay and look around but the background noise/music forces me to make my purchase and get out ASAP. Maybe the cashiers have the freedom to play music they like. Price gouging

Ever do your math and realize how much we’re overcharged and gouged for products? A bottle of water costs X amount. Multiply that by the cost to buy a case. Drinks in restaurants and food prices, just to name a few. Unbelievable profits. Inflation is 5% over the past 3 years down from 8% when costs skyrocketed. Price of gas for delivery? Inflation? Inflation has gone down slightly. Why haven’t costs gone down? They were quick to go up. Why do we accept this?

UNIVERSITY OF ROCHESTER VIETNAMESE CLUB GAINS PERSPECTIVE AT GENESEO’S NATIONAL WARPLANE MUSEUM

Ten University of Rochester Vietnamese Students Association (VSA) members toured the National Warplane Museum (NWM) in Geneseo (3489 Big Tree Rd., Geneseo) April 8 to see e Saigon Lady C-130, one of the last planes to escape South Vietnam with civilians before the Communist takeover (Fall of Saigon) in April 1975.

According to the museum, “About 45 years ago, South Vietnamese Air Force pilot Pham Quang Kheim loaded his family onto a C-130 cargo plane in the nal hours of the Vietnam War. South Vietnam was collapsing into panic and looting as North Vietnamese forces surrounded, and then entered, the capital of Saigon. Kheim ew the big plane and his family to safety in Singapore – one of the last to leave the city before the Communist takeover.”

e Saigon Lady spent 28 years at e Smithsonian National Air & Space Museum in Washington, DC before resettling at the NWM in 2019 for restoration and public display as the centerpiece of their developing Vietnam War monument.

VSA President, Nguyet “Riley” Nguyen helped coordinate the visit, the ve-year-old club’s rst o -campus trip. He said the VSA hosts on-campus cultural events like Pho Night, Co ee Break, and Spring Festival to promote and celebrate Vietnamese culture, and the members who visited the Warplane Museum were incredibly grateful for this unique learning opportunity.

When Nguyen introduced the trip, members found it meaningful and memorable, open-minded despite their upbringing with a very di erent perspective. ey knew largely of the hardships the Vietnamese government, military, and citizens experienced. “Our families were permanently separated, our lands were destroyed, and our country was split in half. We didn’t have many discussions about the American side of this war other than them being our enemy, and the military planes on Vietnamese territory were our target.”

NWM volunteers Jay Jones, Ray Ingram, and Don Wilson, leaders of the C-130 restoration project, chaperoned the student visit. e students’ engagement impressed Jones, who said, “ ey asked lots of questions and listened attentively to the presentation. Some had visited Air Museums in Vietnam before but weren’t allowed to sit in the cockpit. ey loved sitting in the pilot seat, handling ight controls and pushing buttons!”

e National Warplane Museum is “dedicated to all active, retired, living, or deceased US Armed Forces veterans and their families who served during the World Wars, Korean Con ict, Vietnam, Gulf Wars, and Mid-eastern battles.” e museum preserves some of the aircra , equipment, and artifacts of those con icts. NWM believes it is crucial to remind “visitors and especially our youth of the fortitude and courageous sacri ces it took to maintain our liberty here in America, especially within the changing culture we are facing today.”

e NWM owns the Saigon Lady and several other important military aircra that deserve to be preserved and accessible to the public. Volunteer Ruth Henry says, “ ere is a primal connection when we step aboard a vintage plane. We feel the presence of the soldiers, and for just a moment, connect to their world.” Perhaps through more visits like this and outreach in the community, people today will learn to appreciate the human experience that was the Vietnam War.

roughout the visit, Nguyen said, “We were able to look at this complex piece of history from both the American and the Vietnamese perspectives. e NWM exhibit opened us to this discussion of the American side, speci cally the condition they endured during the war. We looked at the relatively small size of the Saigon Lady plane and how it transported up to 100 people. We heard stories of paratroopers preparing as they jumped out of the plane - many didn’t return home.”

He explained, “ e war caused tremendous loss to innocent citizens on both sides: young teenagers were sent to war zones instead of college, soldiers returned with permanent physical and mental damage, families were forever separated, among countless other

Brief breaks during the work day can dramatically improve one’s ability to focus on a task. A 2011 study published in the journal Cognition found that brief mental breaks can improve focus on a prolonged task. The study’s authors tested participants’ ability to focus on a repetitive computerized task for 50 minutes under various conditions. The control group performed the task without breaks or diversions. The switch group and non-switch group memorized four digits before performing the task and were directed to respond if they saw one of the digits on the screen while performing the task. The switch group was the only group to be presented with the digits twice during the experiment, and both groups were tested on their memory of the digits at the end of the task. Most participants’ performance declined considerably over the course of the 50-minute task. However, the performance of those in the switch group did not decline at all, as the two brief breaks to respond to the digits allowed them to maintain their focus throughout the experiment. The researchers behind the study concluded that the switch group’s performance was steady because the brain is built to detect and respond to change, and its performance will actually suffer if it must maintain prolonged attention on a single task without taking a break. Professionals with a lot on their plates may see their performance improve by taking frequent mental breaks throughout the workday.
