Keuka Lake

A Guide to Exploring the Gem of the Finger Lakes DISCOVER

Keuka Lake, named for the Iroquois “canoe landing” or “bent elbow” depending on the source, is a captivating destination in the heart of New York’s Finger Lakes region. Known for its unique Y-shape, Keuka is often heralded as the most picturesque of all the Finger Lakes, with its panoramic vineyards and inviting, warm waters that make for perfect swimming throughout the summer. Whether you’re an adventure seeker, a wine enthusiast, or simply in search of a serene retreat, Keuka Lake offers something for everyone. Enjoy the breathtaking landscape that highlights the handiwork of glaciers 10,000 years ago.

Nearly 20 miles long and 2 miles wide, Keuka Lake holds approximately 379 billion gallons of water and reaches a depth of around 100 feet. Its watershed spans 110,000 acres across ten towns and two villages in Yates and Steuben Counties. This area has been a hub of human activity since early settlers hunted, fished

and gathered wild foods at the end of the Ice Age. The region’s agricultural history began about 900 years ago with the Owasco people, who introduced the “Three Sisters”—interplanted corn, beans, and squash. The Seneca tribe of the Iroquois Confederacy inhabited the area until they were displaced by colonists after the Revolutionary War. Since then, the region has developed rich agriculture, tourism, and recreation.

Keuka Lake is home to the quaint towns of Penn Yan, Branchport, and Hammondsport, all of which are steeped in history and a rich array of amenities and attractions that beckon to people near and far throughout the year. Outdoor enthusiasts rave about Keuka’s opportunities to explore the natural beauty and rejuvenate the soul. Home to pristine water, beautiful parks, and scenic vistas to last a lifetime, Keuka Lake and the surrounding region is incredible.

Outdoor Adventures Around Keuka Lake

• Boating: Keuka Lake is a boater’s paradise with three public boat launches and four marinas where you can rent boats, fill up on supplies, or simply enjoy the waterfront views.

• Fishing: Renowned as one of the best fishing holes in the entire Northeast, Keuka Lake is home to lake trout, rainbow trout, brown trout, and landlocked salmon.

• Swimming: The lake’s warm, shallow waters make it ideal for swimming. Popular spots include Keuka Lake State Park in Branchport, Indian Pines Park and Red Jacket Park in Penn Yan, and Champlin Beach in Hammondsport.

Wine Country

Located geographically at the center of the Finger Lakes, Keuka is also known as the Heart of Wine Country, centered within the 100+ wineries and vineyards of the Finger Lakes. Keuka Lake’s glacially-deposited soils inspired early grape cultivation and the birth of America’s wine industry in 1860. With its steep slopes surrounding the lake providing natural drainage and deep lake depth moderating cool autumns with gentle warming fog that extends the growing season, Keuka is the ideal wine region. The Keuka Lake Wine Trail, among others, offers visitors the chance to sample world-class wines, particularly the region’s signature cool climate Riesling, and enjoy the hospitality of local wineries.

• Glenn H. Curtiss Museum (Hammondsport): Dedicated to aviation pioneer Glenn Curtiss, this museum celebrates his contributions to flight, including his historic 1908 flights from the Keuka Lake ice.

• Greyton H. Taylor Wine Museum (Hammondsport): Discover the rich history of winemaking in the region.

Waterfalls

Explore the cascading beauty of Botsford Nature Preserve as well as Seneca Mills Falls and Cascade Mills Falls along the Keuka Outlet Trail.

Hiking

• Keuka Outlet Trail: This seven-mile trail connects Keuka Lake to Seneca Lake, following abandoned railroad tracks from Penn Yan to Dresden. Along the way, hikers, bikers, horseback riders, cross-country skiiers, and snowmobilers can explore old mills and waterfalls.

• Keuka Lake State Park: 8 shorter hiking trails.

• Birdseye Hollow State Forest: 2 trails traversing its 11-mile section of the Finger Lakes Trail.

• Botsford Nature Preserve: Includes a scenic trail through diverse landscapes, including grasslands, upland forests, and the Big Gully gorge.

Parish Glen & Conklin Gully

A 2-mile moderately challenging trail just outside Naples in the High Tor Wildlife Management area, this gully offers a bit more adventure with the best trail being in the creek bed itself and with steep inclines requiring significant climbing. Expect to get wet and dirty on this trail. The prize here, besides the adventure itself, is the beautiful vista and the five large waterfalls and several smaller cascades along the way. Visitors rave that the extensive natural environment maintains the glen/gully’s clear waters and quiet biophony.
