Through con dential business owner/ leader discussions, workshops for supervisors and employees, and presentations for coalition and community groups, the program aims to improve wellbeing in the workplace, covering topics such as mental and physical health. We aim to support workplace leaders and managers in making the best decisions about these issues.

These trainings can be delivered in person or virtually. These programs not only reduce stress and rate of substance use but have also been proven to improve the emotional climate and team culture. Results have shown to promote a healthy workplace environment, increased communication and support, and improved attitudes around stress, fatigue, anxiety, substance use, and other mental health concerns.

Learn how to recognize and act on the importance of interconnectivity between oneself, workplace, and the community. This training breaks down our interconnectivity, explores our values, looks at our set-point and how it impacts the choices we make, and ends by exploring team resilience and the impact of really listening.

Resilience and Thriving

Learn how to identify the e ects of stress and promote healthy coping mechanisms. This training helps to understand stress, our positive lifestyle areas, positive and negative coping habits and traits, and goal setting with positive intentions.

Learn how to embrace a wellness-focused lifestyle and reduce substance misuse and increase overall mental wellbeing. This training focuses on our strengths across the six dimensions of wellness, and how we can build health consciousness with healthy alternatives, and what commitments we can make to use better coping mechanisms and promote healthy choices across the dimensions of wellness.

The word “condiment” comes from the Latin word “condimentum”, meaning spice, seasoning or sauce, and “condire”, which means to preserve, pickle or season. Although the word was first used to describe pickling fluid and seasoning in the mid-1400s, it has come to include a wide range of different products in modern times.

Why are condiments such a common feature on dining tables? Condiments are known to be a typical compliment to food because of their ability to personalize and add taste or flavor to different dishes as desired.

Condiments also offer a whole sensory experience through smell, sight, sound, and touch, making dishes much more attractive.

DID YOU KNOW?

Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer worldwide. In the United States, one in five people will develop skin cancer by the age of 70, and more than two people die of skin cancer in the U.S. every hour, says the Skin Cancer Foundation. Roughly 90 percent of non-melanoma skin cancers are associated with exposure to UV radiation from the sun. Melanoma also is inextricably linked to UV exposure. In the United Kingdom, nearly nine in 10 cases of melanoma can be prevented by staying safe in the sun.The American Cancer Society estimates about 100,000 new melanomas will be diagnosed in 2024, when roughly 8,290 people are expected to die of melanoma. The number of people getting skin cancer in Canada also has risen at a fairly constant rate over the last 30 years. One in 73 Canadian women and one in 59 Canadian men will develop the disease, according to Canada.ca. Early detection of skin cancer can improve prognosis.

Judy McCormick Judy McCormick

BATH, NY: Judy McCormick, age 65, passed peacefully at home with her husband by her side on Saturday, August 24, 2024 after a long illness. Judy was able to stay home throughout her five years of battling her sickness due to the love, support and care given to her by her husband, Harry. Born in Bath, New York on February 15, 1959, she is predeceased by her grandparents, Lee and Marie Fairbrother; and her parents, Jack and Geraldine Fairbrother. She is sur vived by her loving husband of 23 years, Harry McCormick; daughter, Tami Degroat; stepsons, Mark and Matthew McCormick; brothers, Garold (Sandi) Fairbrother, Marty Fairbrother, Monte (Maryann) Fairbrother; sister, Jill (Chris) Cermak; and many grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Judy grew up working with her father and brothers at their family farm on Fairbrother Road in Avoca, NY. She also worked at Gold Seal Winery, Gunlocks and Phillips Lighting before an early retirement due to health issues. Judy loved her animals, her miniature horse, Mae Mae; miniature donkey, Misty, and all her dogs. She enjoyed fishing with her husband, going out to dinner, going to yard sales with her mother, baking, sewing, crocheting, spending time with her family and friends and telling it like it is!

As many would say, you could tell from the moment you met her, Judy was a special person. Her love for her family was like no other, she took care of her father for years making sure he had the care he deserved. She was always there for her family and friends no matter what they needed. Judy developed a special relationship with Teresa Klock and Michelle Calkins through their visits to Tops. She also had a unique and cherished relationship with her niece, Jennelle McMahon and her great nephew, Jaxx. Judy will be deeply missed and never forgotten.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Finger Lakes SPCA, 72 Cameron Street, Bath, New York 14810. in her memory, which she visited often. There was an hour of calling from 1:00PM to 2:00PM on Thursday, August 29, 2024 at the Bishop & DeSanto Funeral Home, 35 Main Street, Hammondsport, NY where a memorial service took place at 2:00PM on Thursday. A celebration of life immediately followed at the Hammondsport American Legion, 8425 State Route 54.

The Bishop & DeSanto Funeral Home is honored to assist Judy’s family with the arrangements.

Online condolences or remembrances of Judy are welcome at www.bishopdesanto.com or on the Facebook page of Bishop-Johnson & DeSanto Funeral Home.

TAILGATING DO AND DON’T THIS SEASON

DO know the rules of the venue. The rules of tailgating vary by location, but may include anything from prohibiting outside alcohol to refusing pets on property to not allowing noisemakers or fireworks. Familiarize yourself with the rules when planning your tailgate.

DON’T leave it all to chance. Create a list of ways to stay busy. Many tailgaters, in addition to bringing food, will pack activities. These can include a small pigskin to toss around or cornhole boards. Again, make sure you abide by the rules of the sight.

A Winning Summer Reading Program

Thanks to the Public Library staff for a wonderful summer reading program. Readers had lots of books to choose from even with the kids’ book section being closed for repairs. The staff is so enthusiastic and friendly—they are special people! Thanks!

A Huge THANK YOU

In these times of rising food prices, it is so wonderful to see all the items that the community donates to the Food Pantry. They give not only non-perishable foods but toiletries, laundry soaps and overages from their garden. It is heart warming to see all the items coming in to help people in need. A big THANK YOU to all.

Went to CHURCH rummage sale just a few minutes ago. It started at 8. I was the last person in line. Myself and the lady in front of me had to take our time going down two flights of stairs. Over 10 people found out the books were upstairs and made their way past us, almost knocking into us. Then a lady blocked the jewelry spot and no one was able to look. I was pushed again, so I paid for my 2 items and said “Sorry, I’m getting pushed around too much to look further.” The next person in line was a collector. The lady who was taking the money said “I marked these and they weren’t $2.00 each.” He said “it’s what’s marked,” and she said “Ok. Why?” It was a CHURCH trying to raise some money. How do you live with yourself? The cashier even said that wasn’t the price, he didn’t care. I left but paid what the price was. How do you cheat a church?

Balloon Releases Should Be Illegal

I think balloon releases should be illegal. Look it up: the harmful effects of balloon releases. Also you can look up ecofriendly alternatives to balloon releases. Remember, birds, fish, turtles, pets or any animal in the world can suffer due to balloon releases.

TIPS FOR FIRST-TIME HOME BUYERS

Expect to move quickly. Inventory remains very low, which means buyers are in heated competition for the few homes that are on the market. In late 2023, NAR data indicated the rate of home sales were the lowest they had been in 13 years,so buyers will likely need to move quickly and make an offer if they see a home they like, as chances are the property won’t be on the market too long before it’s sold. In fact, the NAR noted that homes spent an average of just 23 days on the market in October 2023.

PAW’S CORNER

What to do when your pet won’t housetrain

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I adopted a 9-month-old puppy a few weeks ago and named him “Chestnut.” He’s wonderful, but has one problem. He is still not housetrained. I think part of it is from the shelter, where the dogs routinely poop in their cages and rarely are taken outside. Plus, he was rescued from a pet hoarding situation. How can I resolve his housetraining issues?

-- Glenda in Dothan, Alabama

DEAR GLENDA: Congratulations on your new family member! I know the housetraining situation is frustrating, but have patience.

If you haven’t taken Chestnut to the veterinarian yet for his first checkup, schedule that appointment. e vet will rule out any physical problems or hidden illnesses that might be contributing to the problem, and can give some helpful advice on working with dogs from a traumatic background.

at background does have an effect on housetraining. Chestnut spent formative months in locations where little to no training took place, and he learned to follow the habits of the other dogs around him. So, you’ll have to retrain him away from those habits, and keep the entire experience a positive one.

Take Chestnut for walks two to three times per day, and (this is important) at the same times each day. He needs to know that at sunrise, noon and sunset, he will have “outside” time. Bring his favorite treats with you.

At first, shower him with treats for everything: putting on the leash, walking next to you, sitting on command, and every time he poops or pees. Make him look forward to pooping outside.

Never scold him if he poops inside. Just clean up and try again. If he poops in specific areas of the house, block his access to those areas if possible. Keep training positive and be patient, patient, patient. He will come around.

14 MAIN STREET • ARKPORT, NEW YORK

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 71-year-old healthy, active woman. I normally work out six days a week and used to be in very good shape. I’m having stomach issues, which caused me to lose 20 pounds since the end of last year. I was thin to begin with and have lost a significant amount of muscle and most of my body fat. I was diagnosed with gastric intestinal metaplasia in 2019 and had trouble eating, but I didn’t lose any significant weight at that time. No treatment was recommended beyond a suggested follow-up in a year or two.

I have difficulty eating anything but a small amount of food, and if I do “overeat,” I vomit. Eating is beyond a chore, and I continue to lose weight. I have been worked up with no conclusions in sight. I had a colonoscopy two years ago that was normal. I had an abdominal CT scan with and without contrast, an endoscopy, an MR enterography, and a brain scan this year, with no results that explained my problem.

I am seeing another GI doctor soon, but I’m not particularly hopeful. I am 5 feet, 11 inches tall, and now weigh 129 pounds. I am feeling desperate. Do you have any ideas? -- L.W. ANSWER: Weight loss can have many different causes, and it seems like your doctors have carefully looked for many of the concerning ones. Key features of your story are that you are vomiting and losing weight. Intestinal metaplasia is when the lining of the stomach develops a microscopic appearance, similar to the intestines. This can predispose people to stomach cancer, but intestinal metaplasia can also be associated with low acid in the stomach.

Vomiting after eating normal amounts of food is a concern for a stomach mass, but between the endoscopy and the CT scan, it should have shown up. I would be concerned about gastroparesis, where the stomach doesn’t squeeze properly. Vomiting after eating is a hallmark symptom, as is feeling very full after a little food. A gastric emptying study can confirm the diagnosis.

GOOD TIMES

The Hammondsport Festival of Crafts Committee

...wishes to THANK the Hammondsport community and everyone for making this year’s 43rd Annual Hammondsport Festival of Crafts such a wonderful success. Without your patience and understanding, it would not have been possible. We have received many positive comments from visitors impressed with all our village has to offer.

A Special Thanks to the young people we recruited for their commitment during the weekend, for giving of their time, and their help in various efforts, which ensured the event’s success.

The Parents of The Following Can Be Very Proud!! Maddie Wilson, Blake Campbell, Joseph Thomas, Saxen Davis, Orion Davis and Blake Shoemaker

The Hammondsport Festival of Crafts Committee also wish to acknowledge the Glenn Curtiss Museum for the use of their parking area (for the shuttle service), the Village of Hammondsport’s Department of Public Works, the Hammondsport Police Department, and the Finger Lakes Dumpster Company without their continued support, this festival would not be possible.

ALL YOU NEED FOR A MEMORABLE NIGHT OUT

Add a touch of adventure: Experiences with perceived risk or adversity can elevate the sense of enjoyment and camaraderie. While no one is condoning doing something illegal or dangerous, incorporating a bit of adventure into the night can bring about growth and make the experience worth talking about in the future. This may be a reason why escape rooms have grown in popularity. One idea is to explore a new city or town and let other tourists suggest places to visit. Don’t stay in one place too long so the adventure keeps evolving.

TAILGATING DO AND DON’T THIS SEASON

DO pay attention to food temperature. One way to tank the experience is to get food poisoning. When dining outdoors, it is essential that cold food remains cold and hot food is cooked to the proper temperature. Plenty of ice, coolers and a way to heat up food will be needed. Portable gas or charcoal grills can cook food quickly.

DON’T ignore the weather. Everyone hopes for beautiful weather on game day, but Mother Nature isn’t predictable. Plan accordingly by layering clothing and bringing ponchos or other protective gear if it is going to rain or even snow.

* Recipe substitution: For each cup of brown sugar needed, use 1 cup of white sugar and 2 tablespoons of molasses.

* If your washer oversuds because you accidentally added too much detergent, just add a half-cup of white vinegar to the wash water. It will dampen the extra bubbles. en make sure to put the load through an additional rinse, to eliminate any soap residue in your clothes.

DID YOU KNOW?

A cataract is a clouding of the naturally transparent lens of the eye that can occur as one ages. Natural proteins in the lens clump together and can cloud the eye. The National Eye Institute says most cataracts develop with age, as more than half of all Americans age 80 or older either have cataracts or have had surgery to remove them. But cataracts can occur for other reasons, such as after an eye injury or after surgery for another vision problem. The American Academy of Opthalmology says cataracts can make it seem like a person is looking through a foggy or dusty car windshield. Everything is hazy, blurry or less colorful. Additional vision changes associated with cataracts include extra light sensitivity; seeing bright colors as faded or yellowed; seeing double or a ghosted image; and difficulty seeing at night. Using brighter lights at home or getting a new eyeglasses prescription can help manage cataracts in their early stages. An eye doctor may suggest surgery if cataracts are getting in the way of daily activities. Surgery removes the clouded lens and replaces it with a new, artificial lens.

DID YOU KNOW?

Drivers can thank the military for the introduction of sport utility vehicles to the mainstream market. Predecessors to modern SUVs date back to military models from the late 1930s, and four-wheel-drive station wagons and other vehicles that were introduced in the late 1940s. However, many car enthusiasts feel the 1984 Jeep Cherokee was the first SUV in the modern style. In 2021, the Environmental Protection Agency reported that SUVs made up 44.67 percent of all light-duty vehicles produced that year, compared to 25.69 percent of market share for sedans and wagons. In fact, as of 2023, many major automakers had announced plans to phase out many of their popular sedans. General Motors dropped nearly all passenger cars from its North American portfolio. Dodge dropped the Challenger and Charger; Acura removed the ILX model; the Chrysler 300 is no more; and Nissan no longer offers the Maxima. These are just some of the effects of the popularity of SUVs and also part of a larger shift toward the production of electric vehicles.
