“Hello, I’m Gary. I was found as a stray five years ago, and given to my owners, knowing they would take good care of me. My owners call me a “gentle giant”, as I weigh 18 pounds. Of course, I enjoy napping, but I also love to snuggle, meet new people, and play with my four brother and sister cats. I look forward to daily screen time with my owners, when I get to watch videos of birds and other outdoor creatures. Some of my other favorite things include empty boxes, human shoes, squirrel watching, and dinner time. Although I share my owners’ time with other furry friends, I will always have a special place in their hearts.”

SPRING CLEANING PROJECTS YOU DON’T WANT TO FORGET

Kidz Korner ____________________15

Spring cleaning is an annual tradition in many households. After a w inter spent cooped up indoors, spring cleaning can rejuvenate a household and provide a great chance to rid a home of a season’s w orth of clutter. Donating old clothes and cleaning out the garage are popular spring cleaning projects, but there are a host of additional tasks homeow ners can tackle to freshen up their homes this spring.

HELPFUL INSECTS Plants depend on insects to transfer pollen as they forage, and many insects are quite beneficial to have around. While some pollinate, others are predators of other pests. • Antlion: A foe of ants, they’ll help eat and control ant populations and pollinate flowers. They pose no threat to humans, either. • Big dipper firefly: These colorful insects feast on earthworms, slugs and snails during the larval stage. Fireflies add drama to evening gardens with their twinkling lights. • Garden spiders: Although some spiders can be venomous, many are quite handy to have around the garden. They’ll help control pest populations that can damage plants and crops. • Dragonflies: These arial artists that zip around the yard are consuming smaller insects that would otherwise pester plants and humans. • Blue-winged wasp: This wasp attacks the larvae of Japanese beetles, helping to control beetle populations. • Bees and butterflies: Butterflies and bees are some of the best pollinators out there, and each can add whimsy to gardens.

Compacted soil blocks oxygen, water and nutrients from reaching the root systems of the turf. That creates a lawn with weak roots, which make grass more vulnerable to disease and compromising its ability to withstand harsh weather, such as summer heat. The buildup of thatch, which is a matted layer of grass clippings and other organic debris that collects on the top of the soil, is one indicator that a lawn could benefit from aeration, a process in which the surface of the lawn is perforated to break up compacted soil and allow oxygen, water and nutrients to reach root systems. Other signs that aeration may be necessary include patches of thin grass, brown spots and a high concentration of clay in the soil. Aerators can be operated manually, though professionals tend to use motorized aerators. The machines are often heavy, so homeowners should consider their health and physical ability before deciding to aerate on their own. Hiring a professional landscaper who has experience aerating may the quickest and most effective way to restore a lawn to full health. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

HOME HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING SALOME’S STARS ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A suggestion from a colleague on how to work out a problem might not sit too well with you. But before you suspect his or her motives, why not just accept it as a friendly gesture? TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) An associate might seek your counsel on a workplace dispute with another co-worker. Listen to what she or he has to say, but withhold advice until you’ve heard the other side of the story. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Use your Twin gifts for creativity and practicality to score points in landing an opportunity that could open doors to a new career. Someone returns after a long absence. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Although things are pretty hectic through much of the week, some quiet time with loved ones helps restore balance. An unexpected visitor brings welcome news about a mutual friend. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Getting used to change isn’t always easy for the Big Cat. But make the adjustments gradually, and soon you’ll hardly remember when things were any different from how they are now. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Continue to stay the course you’ve chosen, and avoid distractions that could throw you off track. Some knowledgeable folks are happy to provide guidance if you need it. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Although you earned plaudits from most coworkers for your recent stand on a workplace situation, you also raised the envy quotient among others. Tread carefully for now. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) You feel more positive about that delayed project, and you’re ready to pick it up on a moment’s notice. However, you might need to re-motivate those who have since lost interest. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Some welcome news should be coming your way. In the meantime, use that Sagittarius charm to convince some stillreluctant colleagues that your ideas have merit. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Don’t wait for a misunderstanding to work itself out. Instead, ask for a chance to explain the circumstances before those bruised feelings lead to an irreversible break. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A physical problem should be checked out in order to avoid it going from just being a nuisance to something more serious. Your social life takes an unexpected but not unwelcome turn. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Yours might be the wisest sign in the Zodiac. But you still could benefit from the wisdom of a close friend who has suggestions on how to handle a perplexing personal problem. BORN THIS WEEK: Your passion for doing the right thing inspires others to follow your well-trodden path toward justice.

Assess plant location. If plants, flowers or gardens have struggled in recent years or never grew especially vibrant, then gardeners may want to assess the location of their plant life before spring gardening season begins. Some plants may not be getting enough sunlight in certain locations on a property, while others might be overexposed to the sun during spring and summer. Moving plants that are not thriving prior to the start of spring gardening season may be just what gardens need to flourish in the coming weeks.

DESIGN A GARDEN FOR ALL SENSES

HOME SERVICES

The lively sounds of the garden are created by the wildlife that come to pollinate and enjoy the environment gardeners have created. By choosing indigenous plants, gardeners can be sure that insects and small critters will seek refuge within the foliage. Songbirds also will add character to a yard. The Audubon Society suggests including a water source and a songbird border of shrubs along your property’s edge. Provide food sources and make sure they are located a fair distance from the main action of the yard so as not to scare off birds. Wait for musical chickadees, goldfinches, orioles, and cardinals to arrive and enjoy the accommodations.

DID YOU KNOW? Broadening one’s horizons through crafting can be a worthwhile pursuit. Crafting can serve as a relaxing pastime and provide an opportunity to learn rewarding skills. Learning to crochet is one way for men and women to combine creativity and practicality. Crochet is a form of handwork using yarn and a crochet hook. According to the Crochet Guild of America, there’s no way to know just how old the art of crochet is. However, crochet expert Annie Potter has said the modern form of the art originated in the 16th century, primarily in France and England. Others surmise crocheting traces its origins to Arabia before it spread westward through various Mediterranean trade routes.

Beer Terms

• Hops: People just beginning to explore craft beer will no doubt hear the word “hops” a lot. Hops refers to the herb added to boiling wort or fermenting beer to impart a bitter aroma or flavor. • IBU: Expressed as a number, sometimes on the bottle or can in which the beer is sold, IBU stands for “International Bitterness Units” and indicates the hop bitterness in the finished beer. The higher the IBU, the more bitter the beer. • ABV: ABV stands for “alcohol by volume” and indicates the amount of alcohol in beer in terms of percentage volume of alcohol per volume of beer. • IPA: IPAs are incredibly popular among craft beer drinkers. An IPA is a style of beer and stands for India pale ale. These beers boast a strong hop bitterness, and many provide a piney, floral flavor. IPAs tend to be high-ABV beers and come in different varieties. American IPAs, Imperial or Double IPAs and English IPAs are popular styles. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

RECOGNIZE AND AVOID YOUTH SPORTS INJURIES Children benefit in various ways from their involvement in youth sports. Being part of a team fosters feelings of belonging, inspires collaborative play and strategy and can be an excellent form of exercise. Still, despite the benefits, parents often worry about the injury risk their children face on the playing fields. Those fears are justified. A Safe Kids Worldwide survey of emergency room visits found that a young athlete visits a hospital emergency room for a sports-related injury more than a million times a year, or about every 25 seconds. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says more than 2.6 million children 0 to 19 years old are treated in the emergency department each year for sports- and recreation-related injuries. Some of the more common injuries young children face have to do with the skeletal and muscular systems of the body. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons stresses that children’s bones, muscles, tendons, and ligaments are still growing, making them more susceptible to injury. Fortunately, with some education, many youth-sport injuries can be prevented.

The Cleveland Clinic notes that soy foods provide a host of nutritional benefits. Plant protein, including soy, can provide cardiovascular benefits, including helping with people with high blood pressure lower their blood pressure to healthier levels. While many people rely on animal-based proteins to get their daily recommended intake of protein, soy foods are naturally free of cholesterol and low in saturated fats. That makes soy foods more heart-healthy sources of protein than animal products. The Cleveland Clinic says substituting soy foods for animal-based proteins a few times per week can reduce a person’s risk for cardiovascular disease. Soy foods also can be a great source of dietary fiber, though the U.S. Soybean Export Council advises consumers that not all soy products are the same. The USSEC notes that foods like soy milk and tofu contain very little fiber. People who want to utilize soy beans as a source of dietary fiber should look to foods that utilize the whole bean, such tempeh, soy flour and textured soy protein. The USSEC also notes there’s some confusion in regard to the connection between soy foods and iron, though the group admits research is ongoing. While a 1/2 cup serving of cooked soybeans contains four milligrams of iron, the phytate and soy protein present in soy foods reduce iron absorption, meaning that the body won’t really benefit from the iron. However, the USSEC recommends consumers purchase fermented soy foods, including tempeh and miso, because the body might absorb more iron from these foods than it will when consuming other types soy foods.

Persistent Cough Can be Tricky to Treat ---

Affordable Dental Implant Solve Your Dental Problem Schedule A Free Consultation

DEAR DR. ROACH: I went through many tests for a cough that lasted for 30 years. No treatments worked. The only sign my doctor could find was that my throat had scars from coughing that long. My allergy specialist had tried for years with all kinds of prescriptions, to no avail. I am now living a normal life since a doctor prescribed tramadol (50 mg) twice a day. What a relief. My wife, grown children, friends and clients are happy. -- L.G. ANSWER: I found only a single case report of tramadol being used for chronic cough, and it was effective in that patient. The authors advised further study on its use. Tramadol is a pain medication distantly related to codeine. Its abuse potential is low, but there have been overdoses and deaths due to this drug, so I don’t recommend its indiscriminate use. However, I have seen personally and received many letters from people with intractable coughing for years, so much so that I wanted to call attention to this as a possible treatment worth discussing with one’s doctor for people with longstanding cough that has resisted diagnosis or treatment. I previously mentioned taking gabapentin for laryngeal neuropathy, a condition that is often unrecognized and that may present with a prolonged cough. I received many letters telling me it was effective. Tramadol at the low dose (for an adult) you mention usually is safe.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have a very dear relative who had radiation seed therapy for prostate cancer in 2003 after a biopsy revealed a Gleason score of 7 (3/4). Afterward, his PSA was only 0.1 to 0.3 the first three years, and it rose only .3 more each year until 2015, when it was 2.7 recently. He is 83. He has been told he must have hormone treatment: shots, pills or both, by his VA provider, who is not a urologist and who says he should see one. He has no symptoms, he says, and he leads a very active lifestyle, with daily walking of 3 miles or more, bowling twice a week and extensive gardening and yard work. Could the rising PSA be due to normal exercise activity, including production from surviving prostate cells? -- R.A. ANSWER: Rising PSA after cancer treatment typically is due to cancer returning, not an increase in normal prostate. However, that does not mean that your friend “must” have treatment. Goals for cancer treatment in an 83-year-old man may be very different from those of a 20-year-old man. In his case, since it took about 10 years to increase by 10 times, it may be a very long time before the probable cancer would be large enough to bother him, and it requires skill and experience to determine whether treatment, which can make quality of life worse, is worthwhile. Many urologists would recommend deferring treatment until and unless he develops symptoms. I certainly would recommend that he go to see a urologist as his VA provider has recommended. He may be able to learn whether it really is the cancer returning and discuss his options. Shots and pills are options, but so is keeping a careful eye on it and not rushing to treat.

CLEAN SM ARTER, NOT HARDER. Technology can be a beautiful thing, and it has revolutionized household cleaning w ith lots of gadgets and tools that make cleaning easier, faster and more effective. For instance, w hen it comes to removing inanimate allergens from your w ood floors, using a Sw iffer Dry Sw eeper to trap and lock the dirt and dust, is tw o times more effective than a typical dusting cloth.

Say Goodbye to Erectile Dysfunction

How Acoustic Wave Therapy Works:

The #1 cause of Erectile Dysfunction is poor blood flow due to blocked or hardened blood vessels. Unlike pills, needles, and creams that DO NOT treat ED, only the symptoms, Acoustic Wave Therapy is a “treatment” that will OPEN existing blood vessels and STIMULATE the growth of new blood vessels, making it possible to achieve a full and rigid erection. At Alpha Wave Medical we treat the root cause of Erectile Dysfunction with our proprietary FDA cleared Acoustic Wave Therapy. This type of treatment may provide long-term results and allow men to stop injecting or orally consuming chemicals to achieve an erection. The Therapeutic Advances in Urology Journal concluded that “Acoustic Wave Therapy aimed outside the body is a revolutionary treatment of ED.” The physicians and professional medical staff at Alpha Wave Medical will assist and manage your treatment protocol.

Alpha Wave Medical 585-485-0190 • www.AlphaWaveMedical.com 115 Sully’s Trail, STE 4, Pittsford, NY 14534 Individual results may vary. © All rights reserved.

As men age, the blood vessels that supply blood to the penis begin to breakdown or collapse. Natural or drug induced blood flow cannot enter into the penis, thus creating ED.

Acoustic Wave Therapy opens existing blood vessels and stimulates growth of new blood vessels. As a result, our patients experience much stronger, firmer and more sustainable erections.

FIVE TIPS FOR PRESCRIPTION MEDICATION SUCCESS (NAPSI)—For people who are on one or more daily prescription medicines, forgetting to take a pill can happen from time to time. Planning ahead for such schedule-disrupting events as vacations and special events can help you stay on track and minimize any health risks that might result from not “taking as directed.”

Doctor’s Advice “It’s really important to take your medication exactly as prescribed, even if you don’t feel different after missing a day or two,” explained Dr. Victoria Losinski, director of pharmacy services at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota. “This is especially true for people with chronic conditions such as diabetes, because their risk of ending up in the hospital is 2.5 times greater when not following a doctor’s treatment plan.” The mantra “you have to take the medicine for it to work” goes beyond diabetes control. People who don’t take their prescribed high blood pressure medication on a regular basis have a 42 percent higher chance of developing chronic heart failure. And people on high cholesterol medications are twice as likely to develop heart disease if their cholesterol is not under control. What You Can Do To help, here are five tried-and-true tips for strengthening your everyday prescription medication habits: 1. Talk to a pharmacist. Some drugs have very specific instructions on when to take them, whether to take them on an empty stomach, with certain foods or to avoid in conjunction with certain medications. Your pharmacist can help you understand your medications and map a plan to stay on track. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota members can also call the number on the back of their cards and speak with a nurse guide. 2. Write it down. If you’ve got several medications to manage, write down the details to keep them straight. Consider using a small one-page calendar, such as the kind found in a checkbook or available through a downloadable tracker, to mark off that you have taken your meds each day. 3. Get organized. Using a pillbox is a simple low-tech way to make sure you take exactly what you need when you need it. There are also pharmacies, including PillPack, that sort your prescriptions, vitamins and other overthe-counter medicines into dated packets to make taking your meds even easier. You can also ask your pharmacy if it offers a similar program. 4. Set an alarm. Use your smartphone to schedule reminders. If you’re looking for an app, try Rxremind, which can be downloaded for iPhone or for Android. 5. Refill on time. Accessing your pharmacy’s auto-refill program, requesting a 90-day supply and using a mail-order prescription service are all good ways to help make sure you don’t run out and miss your medication. CROSSWORD

Your Medicare Open Enrollment To-Do List (NAPS) - You may be happy with your current Medicare coverage, but it pays to shop around. Here are a few things to keep in mind. Don’t shy away from shopping. Plan details change each year, so the policy that was best for you in 2018 may not be your best option for 2019. Changes to premiums, deductibles and co-pays can be costly. An analysis of more than 17,000 people using Medicare.com to compare Medicare plans found that just 10 percent were enrolled in the lowest-cost plan for their prescription drug needs. Those who switched to a new drug plan stood to save an average of $611. Watch for changes in drug coverage. Read any letters from your insurance company outlining changes in your prescription drug coverage. Insurance companies often tweak their formulary, or list of covered drugs, each year. That can mean higher out-of-pocket expenses for you. Compare coverage for your prescriptions under any new Medicare plan you consider. Be sure your doctors participate in your plan. Double-check to make sure your preferred doctors will still be part of your health plan’s network next year. You’ll pay more to see non-network providers, and some health insurers won’t cover out-of-network providers at all, except in an emergency. Compare services. MedicareAdvantage plans tend to offer additional benefits you can’t get with Original Medicare. These can include dental, vision, hearing and even fitness benefits. Shopping for Medicare plans can seem daunting, but there’s a range of services out there to help enrollees navigate them. Read up on your options and don’t hesitate to work through a licensed agent to help match you with the best plan for your needs.

Challenger Miracle Field Offers Inclusive Play Opportunities By Amanda Dudek

“T

here really aren’t any other places like it,” stated Katie Kovar, Director of Challenger Miracle Field of Greater Rochester. “Families know their child is able to play safely here, perhaps with their siblings, safely for the first time.” Located at Ridge Park in Webster, Challenger is an inclusive field that has no barriers for those with disabilities. “All the lines are drawn into the special, flat turf that covers the field,” said Kovar. “Nothing is raised, including the pitcher’s mound, and the entrances to the field and dugouts are wider, as well.” The playing field is just one aspect of the Challenger dream. “We have three phases for this space,” explained Kovar citing, Phase 1: the field. Phase :2 the nearly-finished Concession Building, Phase 3: the inclusive playground. “We want to give families a safe space where parents, grandparents and other caregivers can enjoy themselves safely together,” Kovar stated. Founder and Board President Ron Kampff is the heart and soul behind the Rochester Challenger facilities. Kampff, who was heavily involved in Little League, noticed that children with disabilities couldn’t completely participate, even though they joined teams. “The field spaces, dirt and raised and rough surfaces made their participation difficult,” explained Kovar. Kampff began working on a solution, and Challenger Miracle Field held its Grand Opening in 2017. Its Concession Building went into construction shortly thereafter. “It’s unique in our area,” stated Kovar. “We are developing the first open, safe and accessible space for anyone to use in Rochester and beyond.” Challenger sports now include baseball, soccer, bowling and flag football with more to come.

Challenger Miracle Field of Greater Rochester offers several sports opportunities, including flag football.

The accessible building includes wider, handicap accessible restrooms. “One of the biggest things we heard was that more space in bathrooms was needed,” shared Kovar. She explained that a “care room” is also available. The building houses an accessible concession stand, too. “A Geotech class through Webster’s schools is building 16 handicap-accessible, picnic tables, as well,” added Kovar. Kovar is now looking ahead to Phase 3: the playground. “This space will include quiet areas for kids with autism, shaded areas, cushion grounding, wheelchair accessible play structures and eventually an accessible pavilion so that families will be able to utilize it for parties,” said Kovar. “We will be breaking ground on our playground on June 8th, which is also our Opening Day celebration for Challenger Baseball. We still have over $250,000 to raise before we can complete all three stages.”

Kovar praised the community for always being incredibly supportive, backing their efforts 100%. “I think what has caught on here is that there is this population of people who do not have a place where This is changing they can go and play with people’s lives others, feel safe, have an accessible space where they can see all it has to offer. This playground is going to be 100% barrier free,” she said. “We are excited!” So are those with disabilities and their families. Whether they are from the Rochester area or are visiting from out-of-town, Challenger Miracle Field gives these families an inclusive place to be together. “It is good for all ages,” said Kovar. “Last year, we had a group from a nursing home visit to play whiffle ball!” Those with disabilities aren’t the only ones benefiting. Support has been coming from a healthy mix of parents, grandparents, friends, family, as well as people who simply see the need and are moved to help. “This organization is changing people’s lives,” Kovar stated emphatically. “It is great to see how excited everyone is and to see this space putting parents, siblings and caregivers at ease.” Kovar has seen the benefits first hand within her own family. “My son who is 7-years-old is developmentally on track while my daughter who is 2-years-old has speech and physical delays,” explained Kovar. “Yet, both of them benefit here.” “We welcome all communities with open arms,” said Kovar, “In addition to participation in Challenger sports, we have many miracle events at other spaces throughout the year and will never turn anyone away. Families may also contact me directly for sponsorship opportunities.” Kovar added that Challenger will have a yoga class this summer. “I have arranged for a mindfulness class and yoga series to run this summer at the field. It will give parents and other caregivers a place to clear their heads and relax for an hour or so,” said Kovar. “Come and visit,” encouraged Kovar. “When you see the field and what is here, you can truly feel its heart and soul, the passion.” For more information and to see how you can help, visit www.rochestermiraclefield.org. however- due to poor management and nepotism, this previously abundant employer can no longer find work in our field. Not only does this company practice horrible customer service, but they also treat their long time, loyal employees with disdain and disrespect. As a union member I am disgusted and horrified by the lack of appreciation this LLC has shown its employees over the past few years. If anyone is waiting on this company for work in the coming months- be prepared to be disappointed.
