SHETLAND PONIES (STANDARD) – In Hand

Affiliated to the Shetland Pony Stud -Book Society & the South West Shetland Pony Group. Affiliated to the National Pony Society (NPS)

All ponies must be registered with the Shetland Pony Stud-Book Society or eligible for registration.

Classes must be confined to SPS-BS registered ponies. Ponies must be named on the entry form and in the catalogue if one is produced. Society rosettes must only be given to ponies registered with the Society or to foals eligible for registration.

Three-year-old fillies with foals at foot may not be shown. All foals must be a minimum of three weeks old on the day of the Show.

IN ORDER TO ENTER A STALLION CLASS AT AN AFFILIATED SHOW, ENTIRE MALES AGED 4 YEARS OLD AND OVER MUST HAVE AN “S” NUMBER AND HAVE BEEN SUCCESSFULLY THROUGH EITHER THE SPS-BS STALLION ASSESSMENT PRIOR TO 2006 OR THE CURRENT SPSBS VOLUNTARY VETERINARY EXAMINATION. In-hand entire males 2 years and over are advised to display a stallion bridle badge.

There must be no colts or entire males in Young Handlers classes. Children under 14 years old may not show colts (excluding foals) or entire males in In-hand classes. Children under 12 years old on the day of the show may not show entire males in ridden classes. In the interests of safety, hard hats must be worn by all handlers aged 14 years or under in In-hand classes. Exhibitors should not kneel but remain standing while in the ring.

38. Stallions, 4 years old and over.

39. Mare or Gelding, 4 years old and over. A Special Rosette to the Best Gelding. A special Rosette and a Prize of £5.00 will be awarded to the Best Foal eligible for registration with S.P.S.B.S shown with its dam in this class.

40. Yearling, Colt, Filly or Gelding.

41. 2 or 3 year old, Colt, Filly or Gelding.

Senior Championship – 1st & 2nd prize winners from classes 38 & 39

Shetland Standard Championship - The Senior & Junior champion & reserve complete for the Shetland Pony Stud-Book Society Overall Champion & Reserve.

The Bincombe Challenge Trophy presented by Mrs and the late Mr. E.W. House to the Champion. (To be won 3 times in succession before becoming the absolute property of the winner).

The Shetland Pony Stud-Book Society offers a Rosette to the Best Standard Gelding.

The D W Pellow Cup presented by the late Mr. D. W. Pellow & the late Mrs. Pellow for the Best Standard Shetland other than Black.

The South West Shetland Pony Group will present a Special Rosette to the highest placed pony owned by a Member of the SWSP Group in each class 38 – 41 A current membership card must be produced in the ring.

Classes 38 – 41 are qualifiers for the NPS/ M&M In Hand National Championship to be held at the NPS Summer Championship Show in August 2024

NPS/ Blackertor & Sharptor Studs M&M In Hand Silver Medal Rosette Championship

A Silver Medal Rosette is offered by the National Pony Society for the best registered pony owned by an NPS Qualifying or life member in the NPS Affiliated Mountain & Moorland In Hand Sections (Champion and Reserve Dartmoor, Shetland, Miniature Shetland, Welsh and Mixed M&M to compete). Membership cards must be presented in the ring to receive the medal and/ or qualification.

NPS Silver Medal Rosette Championships: These classes are judged under the Rules of the NPS Qualifiers are entitled to compete in the final of the Silver Medal Rosette Championship to be held at the NPS Summer Championship Show in August 2024.

The South West Shetland Pony Group will present a Special Rosette to the highest placed pony owned by a Member of the SWSP Group in each class 42 - 45. A current membership card must be produced in the ring.

The Group Established for Miniature Shetlands will present a Special Rosette to the highest placed Miniature Shetland Pony owned by a member of GEMS in each class, members must be wearing a 2023 GEMS badge.

Classes 42 - 45 are qualifiers for the NPS/ M&M In Hand National Championship to be held at the NPS Summer Championship Show in August 2024

46. Exmoor, Connemara, New Forest, Dales, Fell and Highland, Stallion, Mare or Gelding, 4 years old and over. All Highland stallions aged 4yrs and over must hold a Highland Pony Society Stallion Licence. A Special Rosette and a prize of £5.00 to the Best Pure Bred Foal by a Registered Stallion and out of a Mare shown in this class.

47. Exmoor, Connemara, New Forest, Dales, Fell and Highland, Yearling, 2 or 3 year old, Colt, Filly or Gelding. Special Rosette to the Best Yearling.

Classes 46 – 47 are qualifiers for the NPS/ M&M In Hand National Championship to be held at the NPS Championship Show in 2024.

The British Connemara Pony Society offers a Rosette to the highest placed Connemara Pony in each class. Owners of the winning ponies to be a Member of the BCPS. Membership Card to be produced in the Ring.

The Fell Pony Society offers a Rosette to the highest placed Fell Pony in each class. Owners of the winning ponies to be a Member of the FPS and FPS membership Card to be produced in the ring.

The Highland Pony Society offers a Rosette to the highest placed Highland Pony in each class.

Championship – 1st & 2nd prizewinners from classes 46 & 47

The Kimber Perpetual Challenge Trophy presented by the late Mr E.G. Hore and Mrs S Hore to the Champion.

All classes are open to both NPS Members and NON MEMBERS NPS Mountain & Moorland Qualifying Rounds : These classes are judged under the Rules of the NPS.

NPS/Corscaron Horse Essentials Home Produced Ridden Championship – Riders of Home Produced ponies (see definition in the NPS Rules Book) can wear a white arm band in classes where this is indicated. These ponies, if owned by NPS members, are then eligible to qualify for the final at the NPS Summer Championship Show. The owner’s membership card must be produced in the ring when requested or the qualification will be forfeit.

Classes 48 – 51 to be run under National Pony Society Rules 2024.

The NPS/SHOWING CLASSICS M&M Leading Rein National Championship.

48. M&M Leading Rein, open to registered Dartmoor, Exmoor, Shetland, New Forest, Welsh Section A and Welsh Section B, mares and geldings four years old or over not exceeding 122 cm registered in the main body of their respective Breed Society stud book. Riders must have attained their 3rd birthday but must not have attained their 9th birthday before the 1st January in the current year. To be shown in a snaffle bit.

A Special Rosette will be awarded to each Rider not placed.

The Stable 2 Stable HCS Perpetual Challenge Trophy to the Winner in class 48.

The Dartmoor Pony Society offers a Rosette to the Best Dartmoor Pony in class 48 shown by an Exhibitor who is a Member of the Dartmoor Pony Society. Current Membership Card MUST be produced in the Ring before the Rosette is awarded.

The NPS/ Showing Classics M&M First Ridden National Championship.

49. M&M First Ridden, Open to Mares and Geldings, 4 years old and over, not exceeding 12.2hh (128cm), registered in the main body of their respective Breed Society stud book. Riders must have attained their 3rd birthday but not reached their 12th birthday before the 1st January in the current year.

NPS/Conscaron Horse Essentials Home Produced Ridden Championship Qualifier - wear white arm bands.

A Special Rosette will be awarded to each Rider not placed.

The Dartmoor Pony Society offers a Rosette to the Best Dartmoor Pony in class 49 shown by an Exhibitor who is a Member of the Dartmoor Pony Society. Current Membership Card MUST be produced in the Ring before the Rosette is awarded.

Mini Championship – 1st & 2nd prize winners from classes 48 & 49. Champion goes forward to Best Pony in Show.

The NPS/RINGSIDE STUD M&M Open Ridden National Championship

50. M&M Open Ridden, open to registered pure bred Dartmoor, Exmoor, Shetland, Welsh Section A and Welsh Section B, Stallion, Mare or Gelding, 5 years old and over. All Stallions must display a bridle disk.

The Dartmoor Pony Society offers a Rosette to the Best Dartmoor Pony in class 50 shown by an Exhibitor who is a Member of the Dartmoor Pony Society. Current Membership Card MUST be produced in the Ring before the Rosette is awarded.

51. M&M Open Ridden, open to registered pure bred Connemara, Dales, Fell, Highland, New Forest, Welsh Section C & Welsh Section D, Stallion, Mare or Gelding, 5 years old and over. All Highland stallions aged 4yrs and over must hold a Highland Pony Society Stallion Licence. All Stallions must display a bridle disk.

The British Connemara Pony Society offers a Rosette to the Best Connemara in class 51. Owners of the winning pony to be a Member of the BCPS. Membership Card to be produced in the Ring.

The Fell Pony Society offers a Rosette to the Best Fell in class 51. Owners of the winning pony to be a Member of the FPS and FPS membership Card to be produced in the ring.

The Highland Pony Society offers a Rosette to the highest placed Highland Pony in class 51.

Open Championship – 1st & 2nd prize winners from classes 50 & 51. Champion goes forward to Best Pony in Show.

NPS/ THE NICHOLLS FAMILY M&M Ridden Silver Medal Rosette Championship

A Silver Medal Rosette is offered by the National Pony Society for the best registered pony owned by an NPS Qualifying or Life member in the M&M Ridden section (excluding Leading Rein, First Ridden & WHP). Membership cards must be presented in the ring to receive the medal and/or the qualification. Qualifiers are entitled to compete in the final of the Silver Medal Rosette Championship to be held at the NPS Championship Show in 2024.

Young Handler

52. Young Handlers 12 years and under (must not have attained his/her 13th birthday on day of Show)

To be judged on the presentation and competence of the handler, not the animal that is being shown. Handlers must wear correctly secured British Standard Skull caps/Riding hats. No colts or stallions permitted.

A Special Rosette will be awarded to each handler not placed.

CLYDESDALE HORSES – Ridden and In hand

(An award of £25.00 will be made to each Heavy Horse attending the Show) Affiliated to the Clydesdale Horse Society

All exhibits must be shown in accordance with Breed Society rules. Part bred entries should be at least 25% Clydesdale.

53. Ridden Best Registered or Part Bred Clydesdale Horse

Open to Mares, stallions or geldings, 4 years old and over that are registered in the main British stud book of the Clydesdale Horse Society and Part Bred Clydesdales. (Please indicate breeding and a brief ridden history on entry form for the interest of the commentator)

Riders of stallions must be 16 years and over. Horses may be shown unplaited or plaited with neck rolls. Neck flights are not permitted for health and safety reasons. Tail flights are permissible. Judge will not ride.

The class will be judged on performance and obedience as a ridden horse in Walk, trot, canter and stand and rein back. Horses will be asked to give a go-round together and will then complete an individual display lasting no longer than 2 minutes.

Winner will go forward to the Supreme Championship.

54. In Hand Yearling, 2 or 3 year old, Colt, Filly or Gelding. Special Rosette and a prize of £10.00 will be awarded to the Best Yearling. Special Rosette to the Best 2 year old.

The Clydesdale Horse Society Shield will be awarded to the best yearling or two-year-old colt or filly, registered or eligible for registration with the Society, not having won a Shield before in its lifetime. The exhibitor must be a current member of The Clydesdale Horse Society. The Yearlings may be split from this class if there are sufficient entries forward on the day.

55. In Hand Mare or Gelding, 4 years old and over.

Special Rosette to the Best Foal out of a Mare shown in this class.

Championship – 1st & 2nd prize winners from classes 54 & 55.

Champion will go forwards to the Supreme Championship.

HEAVY HORSES – Ridden

56. Best Registered Ridden Heavy Horse

A Qualifying show for the West of England Heavy Horse Championships

Open to Heavy Horses of all Breeds

All exhibits must be shown in accordance with their individual Breed Society rules.

57. Yearling, 2 or 3 year old, Colt, Filly or Gelding. Special Rosette and a prize of £10.00 will be awarded to the Best Yearling. Special Rosette to the Best 2 year old.

A Perpetual Challenge Shield presented by Mr & Mrs. Saunders of Exeter to the winner. The Yearlings may be split from this class if there are sufficient entries forward on the day.

58. Mare or Gelding, 4 years old and over.

Special Rosette to the Best Foal out of a Mare shown in this class.

Championship – 1st & 2nd prize winners from classes 57 & 58.

The Champion may qualify for the West of England Heavy Horse Championship, Sunday 24t September 2023 which is sponsored by All 4 Wood Tree Services (see rules of qualification below).

A Perpetual Challenge Cup presented by Mrs. P. D. Voaden to the Champion.

Champion will go forwards to the Supreme Championship.

The Shire Horse Society offers a Silver-plated Spoon and a Rosette for the Best Mare or Filly from classes 57 & 58 subject to the Shire Horse Society Special Conditions of Offer. The winner of this special prize must be a Member of the Society and the Horse must be registered or eligible for registration in the Stud Book or Grade B Register. No animal to be eligible to take more than one Silver Spoon during any one year.

59. Best Turned Out Heavy Horse In Show Harness or Decorated Harness, Mare or Gelding, 4 years old and over. To be judged 25% for Horse and 75% for Harness.

The Okehampton Show Perpetual Challenge Cup presented by William J N Cornish, President 2014, to the winner of Class 59.

Class 59 is a qualifying Class for the West of England Heavy Horse Championship Sunday 24t September 2023 which is sponsored by All 4 Wood Tree Services.

(RULES OF QUALIFICATION WEST OF ENGLAND HEAVY HORSE CHAMPIONSHIP 2023:

The In-Hand Qualifier must be the Show Champion of the day. If the Champion is already qualified at a previous Qualifier Show then the Qualifier position can go down the line to 4 th place, at the Judge’s discretion. If the top 4 horses have already qualified then no Qualifier can be awarded. The Show Harness and/or Decorated Harness Qualifier must be the highest placed on the day, down to 4th position at the Judge’s discretion. If a Qualifier is subsequently unable to attend the Championships on 24th September at the Turnpike Showground (between Shaftesbury and Gillingham in North Dorset) then the Championship Secretary must be notified no later than 14th September 2023. The Qualification can then be passed to the next eligible horse.

Each horse that qualifies will receive a Qualifier rosette.

AWARDS AT WEST OF ENGLAND HEAVY HORSE CHAMPIONSHIP 2023:

EACH CHAMPION £250, SASH AND ROSETTE, EACH RESERVE CHAMPION £150, SASH AND ROSETTE. THE REMAINING FINALISTS ATTENDING CHAMPIONSHIP £30.00 AND ROSETTE.
