Teen in Friendship accident is brain dead

A

lmost two weeks after a road accident 12year-old Kevin Ramnarine who was struck down by a minibus is still unconscious. Medical sources have said that ever since the night of the accident he has been showing no brain activity. Up to press time yesterday the lad who sustained severe head injuries was still nonresponsive as he remained a patient at the Georgetown Public Hospital Intensive Care Unit. Further, relatives of the lad have said that to date they are yet to receive word from the police as it relates to

Injured lad: 12 year-old Kevin Ramnarine charges, if any, for the driver of the minibus which was involved in the accident. The relatives said that their focus will be on young Kevin as they hope for a full and speedy recovery. On May 1, last, around 17:30 hours Kevin was struck off of his bicycle while running an errand for his mother, Salima Ramnarine, on the Friendship, East Bank Demerara Public Road. . According to initial reports Kevin rode out of the street and into the path of the route 43 minibus which was heading to Georgetown. Eyewitnesses reported that the lad was tossed up into the air before falling face down on the road. He was rushed to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre but was subsequently transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital.

Do you know that a group of people using taxpayers' money, was laying the foundation to own and control the bulk of Guyana?

Wednesday

The previous government under the stewardship of Mr. Bharrat Jagdeo paid a hefty sum to conduct a feasibility study for the setting up of a national airline. The study was conducted by Leon Hui and Francis Chung Ko of the Canadian company UNIMAC. The completed study, dated August 13, 2009, stated that the airline would be the sole designated national flag carrier of Guyana. Were taxpayers’ dollars being spent to facilitate a private airline or was the government re-entering the business?

Thursday

The Canadian study revealed, among other things, that for the national airline to begin operation with originating flights from Guyana to the U.S., the country must have a Category 1 airport, as required by the U.S government's Federal Aviation Authority. Two weeks before President Jagdeo left office, the nation was shocked to learn that the government had secretly signed a US$138 million deal in Jamaica for a brand new airport. Was this a co-incidence?

Last December, one month after the deal was secretly signed in Jamaica for a brand new airport that is now estimated to cost the taxpayers a whopping US$150M, EZjet began a charter service to Guyana. Almost six months after the first charter, EZJet's purported owner, Sonny A. Ramdeo, told reporters that his company is aiming to become the national flag-carrier of Guyana. Simultaneously, the Canadian study called for government to re-negotiate bilateral air agreements with regional and international governments to benefit the new national flag carrier. Is the government paving the way to hand over the national flag carrier status on a silver platter?

In early 2008, the Registrar of Deeds was ordered to register a company named 'Air Guyana'. At the time that name was already owned and in use by Wings Aviation. Wings Aviation challenged that illegal registration in the courts where a judge ruled that the registration was indeed illegal and that Wings Aviation rightfully owned 'Air Guyana'. Somebody desperately wanted to steal that name.

CAL and Trinidad Using the benefits of former U.S presidents as can’t be trusted justification for our Act is not sober reasoning DEAR EDITOR, The arrival of Surinam Airways (SLM) over the skies of Guyana comes at a critical time when Caribbean Airlines Limited (CAL) is facing major financial troubles and that is compounded with the demise of REDjet Airlines which brought competition to CAL on the Antigua, Barbados and Trinidad routes. Experts are predicting more financial woes for CAL since its acquisition of Air Jamaica. CAL/Air Jamaica recorded a loss of 96 million dollars last year, and with the recent acquisition of two old Boeing 767-300 to service the London routes, this is expected to increase drastically. These developments and Guyana’s struggle to attract reputable airlines forced the government of Guyana to seek Paramaribo’s help in bringing back SLM to Georgetown. As well, the government of Guyana has embarked on a 138-milliondollar modernization and expansion of the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) which has become congested. Such an investment in infrastructure will pay great dividends in the near future, and the project should not be stalled because of politics. Moreover, Guyana’s Cheddi Jagan International is a Category 2 airport according to International Aviation Safety Assessment (IASA). “The IASA program focuses on a country’s ability to adhere to international standards and recommended practices for aircraft operations and maintenance established by the United Nations’ technical agency for aviation, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).Category 2 indicates a deficiency.” While in Category 2, no additional services from Guyana to the US can be established. Looking at this, it won’t be easy for Guyana to resurrect a national carrier to service North America. Thus, Guyana has to attract foreign carriers, and the modernization and expansion of CJIA by China Harbour Engineering Co., which has built airports in Macao, Sri Lanka, Sudan and Myanmar, could do just that. SLM has made it quite clear that plans to connect Guyana to Toronto and New York via non-stop flights, hinge on continued bilateral talks which will lead to some sort of agreement whereby the government of Guyana will offer the Surinamese carrier incentives. SLM’s North American Manager, Mr. Fitz – Jim, “stressed that much of

the success of the airline will depend on continued bilateral talks between the governments of Suriname and Guyana” in an interview with the National Communications Network of Guyana (NCN). SLM may seek commitment that the government of Guyana will not get back into the airline business and eventually seek to compete on the North American routes. Like other carriers such as BA and Virgin Atlantic, which receive financial support from Caribbean countries, SLM no doubt is seeking incentives from the government of Guyana. Surinam Airways could also be seeking flag carrier status. In the future, if Guyana does resurrect a national airline, they can code-share with SLM on the North American routes. Guyana can’t run an international airline with one aircraft, and code-sharing with SLM in the future could solve this issue. Guyana can revive a national carrier to service its interior, the Caribbean. Naturally, the government of Guyana will seek and should seek an agreement from SLM that will spur Guyana’s economy and provide competitive airfares to travelers. Such an agreement must also allow room for maneuvering if SLM does not live up to its commitment. In an effort to consolidate bilateral, CARICOM and South to South cooperation, this is a brilliant move between Guyana and Suriname. Guyana is fatigued over Trinidad and Jamaica’s reluctance to open their skies to competition. Georgetown sees the collapse of REDjet mostly to the delaying tactics of Caribbean governments that seek to protect their skies from competition. CAPA Centre for Aviation asserts, “Now it is back to business as usual in the Caribbean – protectionist governments keeping a tight grip on traffic rights in order to protect their loss-making flag carriers.” This is why Caribbean Airlines can’t be trusted and should not be granted national status. This display of Caribbean disunity and protectionism pushed Guyana and Suriname to enter into serious bilateral air negotiations. Raymond Chickrie

DEAR EDITOR, Vishnu Bisram’s letter dated 05/09/12 and published in the Stabroek News under the caption “Critics of the former presidents benefits act should look at what is done in the US” exposes the wrongs of this Act rather than provides justification for it. Mr. Bisram, in his attempt to provide support for the legislation decided to compare that Act to the benefits former presidents of the United States receive for their service. According to him, this comparison is sufficient justification for the PPP/C to have used its majority in the parliament to pass this hefty package for Mr. Jagdeo. He went on to quote in dollars the amount of money certain US presidents received in benefits for the year 2010. One might argue that maybe Bisram, a supposedly well-informed fellow, should have taken the time to examine the socio-economic realities of the two societies of which he chooses to compare before making his highly fallacious and illogical conclusion. One only has to examine the ‘middle class’ concept as applied in both the U.S and Guyana to glean a full and clear understanding of the vast difference in standard of living, in these two societies. Since I am inclined to credit Mr. Bisram with more academic depth and analytical skills than exhibited in his letter, I am forced to believe that his decision to find justification of the ‘Jagdeo’ Act by comparing a similar situation in the U.S, was done because of political affinity to the PPP/C regime, and to provide a mere sideshow. How can Guyanese approve an Act to benefit any

president which sees them paying tax to support a lifestyle of a man whose standard of living alarmingly exacerbates the expansive gap between the rich and the poor. How can we even contemplate aiding a ‘rock star’ lifestyle for Mr. Jagdeo when we can’t even pay to buy a concert ticket. How can we foster the indulgence of one man in such ‘stinking richness’ when the majority of us are struggling to find a bus fare to send our child to school to get an education? How can we promote such inconceivable luxury for one man when the community called ‘plastic city’, where people swim in squalor daily, exists in our very space? Is Mr. Bisram serious? I am quite convinced that had this Act been passed

under the PNC administration it would have received the wrath of the PPP and their friends, but of course ‘democracy’ has come to Guyana. I am saying that Guyana, owing to the very admission of the government during the very intense budget debate, cannot afford this lofty package to Mr. Jagdeo or any other president, particularly at this time. I would also repeat that should this Act remain as is, it will further emphasize how wrong government’s policies are. It will also raise again, the question of inequity, unfairness and injustice. The parliament, therefore, has every right to act on the side of the people and repeal this ‘bully Act’. Again, let the benefits be commensurate with the

prevailing socio-economic realities of Guyana. Further, it would be instructive for the government to provide the principles, guidelines and rationale which guided its decision to come up with the benefit package for Mr. Jagdeo. Can Mr. Bisram say how much Mr. Jagdeo is earning for his many excursions and ‘Champion of the Earth’ trips around the world, he has been making since he left office? And, are those not capable of being categorized as ‘speaking engagements’? If so, would Mr. Bisram suggest that we apply the U.S principle, he espouses, and decide that Mr. Jagdeo is earning sufficient to upkeep his luxurious lifestyle? Just a thought! Lurlene Nestor

The PPP intended all along to use the budget to call a snap election DEAR EDITOR, The PPP is a decrepit political organization. It thinks hegemony and acts depravity. The PPP does not view politics from the pulpit of honesty, decency, transparency, accountability and openness with the public and its supporters. The PPP made an early decision to use the budget as a tool to force an early election. Its supporters should beware, as they are about to be used as pawns for this Stalinist group running the party to solidify their power.

The PPP’s idea was to fool the public and moreso fool its supporters. Let us expose the PPP here. Remember the opposition asking the ruling party to participate in the budget preparation. Remember the PPP rejecting the opposition. The opposition told the PPP even

before it prepared the budget that it had problems with the funding for GINA and NCN and that it (the opposition) would not allow the LCDS expenditure since the PPP is spending money it does not have and that the Guyanese people don’t spend money they don’t have so why (Continued on page 24)

Time for direct action by taxpayers against NICIL …Company now designed to deliberately disguise billions - Greenidge By Gary Eleazar The time has now come for the taxpayers of Guyana to take direct action against the National Industrial and Commercial Investments Limited (NICIL). This is the opinion of Shadow Finance Minister, Carl Greenidge, who says that NICIL is now designed to deliberately disguise billions of dollars which essentially belong to the people of Guyana. He says that the government’s arguments that NICIL is registered as a company un d e r the Companies Act and as such there is no requirement for the company to turn its money over to the Consolidated Fund, holds no water. Greenidge says that this assertion by the Government is ludicrous, given that at the end of the day it is the

government that owns NICIL and ultimately will decide what to do with the funds it controls. He noted that NICIL is now designed in such a way that billions of dollars belonging to the people of Guyana are now being deliberately withheld by the administration to do as it pleases. Greenidge was adamant that when the company was conceptualized, it was meant to manage the residual assets of the state as a result of privatization. He explained that this meant that in cases where a state entity would have been sold, the land would have been retained by the state and a dividend paid for shares held in the disposed company. It is this that NICIL was supposed to manage, according to Greenidge, and

Winston Brassington and Marcia Nadir-Sharma he called it “a far cry from the situation that currently exists”. The former Finance Minister points to the fact that there are now companies

that fall under 100 per cent ownership by the Holding Company, which he says is a practice that must cease. He said that while A Partnership for National Unity

PPPC in denial of November 28 - says any snap elections will results - GHRA again be along racial lines The Guyana Human Rights Association (GHRA) has blasted government yesterday saying it appears that the ruling party, the People’s Progressive Party/ Civic (PPP/C) is in denial of the November 28 elections results. The ruling party, which lost the majority in Parliament, is struggling with a determined opposition which holds a one-seat advantage. With a huge budget cut and several troubling motions tabled by the opposition, Guyana and the PPP/C are both in uncharted waters. GHRA, a watchdog body, said that the recent budget exercise was the first parliamentary expression of the division of political power produced by the results of national elections in November 2011. GHRA is referring to the unprecedented actions by the opposition to slash a massive $21B from the budget, sparking a number of protests by workers of especially government agencies. According to GHRA, the

fact that a ruling party was unable to “rubber stamp” its budget through the Parliament for the first time since 1968, is in itself a welcome sign of democratic evolution. “Unfortunately, the present ruling party, rather than take credit for democratic progress, appears to remain in denial of the November election results. Excessive language describing the opposition as ‘dictatorial’; pressuring public sector workers to demonstrate in front of Parliament; holding candlelight vigils at the stateowned NCN TV station; using state media to sustain distorted panel discussions; and the on-going disinformation campaign in interior areas, all indicate resistance to political negotiation as created by the recent elections.” GHRA also blasted the A Partnership For National Unity (APNU) for meeting with government at the Office of the President to discuss a budget deal. “The willingness of the

major opposition party to discuss a budget deal at the Office of the President (OP) in the middle of the Parliamentary debate is disconcerting to citizens trying to follow our rickety political process. Resolving national budgetary issues by party leaders in this manner is only possible because in our system MPs are not accountable to constituencies,” GHRA said in its statement yesterday. The matter was one of a number of issues discussed by GHRA’s Executive during a May 5 meeting. “Even informal budget meetings should take place in Parliament, not the OP or the courts or party headquarters. The fact that this particular meeting appears to have ultimately created distrust on all sides of the political spectrum may turn out to be not a bad thing in the long run.” Taken together with the action of the Chief Justice in refusing to entertain a constitutional motion over the

composition of Parliamentary Commissions, the budget cuts achieved by the APNU and the AFC have provoked speculation over the possibility of a snap election being called by the PPP government, the organization said. “The alternative, more positive response to such setbacks would be for the ruling party to treat both as wake-up calls to engage more constructively in Parliament. By contrast, a snap election would reflect a desire to return to the ethnic dictatorships which characterized Guyanese politics since the 1960s.” GHRA also warned that any snap election would be along racial lines again. “Moreover, since the ruling party has to date offered little to either its own supporters or other citizens, particularly the young, with respect to jobs, education or a more attractive future, any snap election could only be won by appealing to ethnic loyalties.”

(APNU) will “keep up the pressure,” private stakeholders and ordinary taxpayers must mobilize and take action against the company. Greenidge pointed to court action and said that while this could be a tedious task, it will be assisted by garnering as much information as possible on the affairs of NICIL. He said that given the sloth of the court system, APNU will be moving straight to the legislative arrangement, and will have the House amend the relevant laws to ensure that the monies being held by NICIL, be turned over to the Consolidated Fund. NICIL is currently headed by Winston Brassington,

Marcia Nadir-Sharma, Dr Roger Luncheon and Dr Ashni Singh, all of whom hold key posts in the institution. This publication has reported that as of December, 31, 2003, NICIL owned and controlled several major companies. They also controlled monies earned from the Privatization Unit, through the disposal of State Assets, which includes revenues earned from transactions such as the sale of the Sanata Complex at Industrial Site. This asset was acquired by Queens Atlantic Investment Inc. The subsidiary companies that NICIL controls include Guyana National Newspapers Limited, publishers of the Chronicle, NCN, GUYOIL, National Edible Oil Company, Guyana National Printers Limited, Linden Electricity Company Inc., and Guyana National Shipping Corporation. It has shares in several other companies including Guyana Stockfeeds Limited, among others. Brassington has argued that the money controlled by NICIL is less than the $50B being bandied about and has promised to come clean on the accounts. The 2003 report for NICIL points to some $30B in revenue while the following year’s report shows a decline by $4B.

Family makes contact with woman Relatives of 24 -year-old Tristell Manifold have reported that the woman had contacted them after seeing the article in yesterday’s edition. On Thursday relatives had told Kaieteur News that Manifold was missing since Monday. According to relatives, Manifold left her 232 South Road, Bourda residence in her red Mazda RX8, PNN 6943 car just after 21:00hrs on Monday. She did not tell anyone where she was going, but she had assured relatives that she would have been back home the following morning.

When contacted yesterday relatives said that Manifold spoke with them. They also said that the woman is still in Guyana and was quite embarrassed by the publication. Cousin joins murder Lawyers for Robb street murder suspect, both now missing accused seek paper committal By Michael Jordan Guyanese murder suspect Ramesh Sookram and his Trinidadian ex-girlfriend Nikita Ramischand started a secret relationship some two years ago, sources close to both families confirmed yesterday. Trinidad media have quoted family members of Ramischand’s as saying that the two met about three months ago when Ramischand’s father hired Sookram and other construction workers to renovate the family’s property. But last Thursday, Sookram’s mother, Dhanwattie Sookram, revealed that her son and his ex-girlfriend met each other some two years ago. At the time, Nikita was 16. Ms. Sookram explained that Ramesh had been living in Trinidad for three years, and around 2010, he informed her that he was in love with a girl in Trinidad. According to Ms. Sookram, Nikita contacted her by telephone and the two also met when the teen visited Guyana about two years ago. “I meet her in Guyana year before last… we had lunch together and she tell me she like my son to marry.” Kaieteur News was told that the two concealed the relationship from Nikita’s father, Trinidad-based attorney Odai Ramischand. Only one woman from Ramischand’s family may have known that the two were friends. Media reports out of Trinidad suggest that things soured when Nikita rejected Ramesh’s marriage proposal, and the suspect might have become more incensed when his ex-girlfriend started another relationship. Twenty-five year old Sookram, called ‘Alvin,’ is the prime suspect in the murder of his 18-year-old exgirlfriend, whose mutilated body was found near her home in Maracas, Trinidad on April 25 last. He is still to be captured. Local police have confirmed that Sookram fled to Guyana the day after Ramischand was slain, and his mother has also admitted that he visited her Soesdyke, East Bank Demerara home that same day. The teen had reportedly been boarding with the suspect in Trinidad. Kaieteur News also confirmed that the fugitive was accompanied by his 16year-old cousin, Anil Persaud. The cousin’s mother told Kaieteur News yesterday that her son was at her Soesdyke home from Thursday, April 26 to April 30. According to the woman, the

A photo of Ramesh Sookram and Nikita Ramischand taken two years ago lad left the home on Tuesday, May Day, after a quarrel with his step-father over the killing in Trinidad. She says she has not heard from the lad since. According to Anil Persaud’s mother, her son denied any involvement in Ramischand’s murder, and claimed that he was at home (in Trinidad) at the time. “He say that his cousin (the murder suspect) say that he was coming home (to Guyana), so he (her son) came too because he had nowhere to stay.” The woman said that police visited her home to enquire about her son’s whereabouts. She said that she gave the police her son’s passport. She has promised to assist the police in locating her son. “I will cooperate with them…my husband is an expoliceman and he has promised to turn my son in.” Like Anil’s mother, Dhanwattie Sookram insists that she knows nothing about her son’s whereabouts. She told Kaieteur News that Ramesh telephoned her at around 23:00 hrs on Wednesday April 25, and said that he was coming home. He then turned up at her home the following day at around 09:00 hrs. While media reports out of Trinidad suggested that security cameras at the Piarco International Airport showed the suspect with a bandaged hand, Sookram’s mother said that he had no injuries. The woman alleged that Ramesh did not appear to be nervous and said nothing about the murder in Trinidad. Kaieteur News was told that Ramesh borrowed his mother’s phone to make a call. He reportedly left with the phone and never returned. Ms. Sookram claims she last heard from her son on Friday, April 27, when he called her home.

She said that police and persons in civilian clothing have twice searched her home and those of her two other sons. Mrs. Sookram and her husband also alleged that heavily-armed men threatened her family and kicked and gun-butted one of her sons last Thursday. According to the woman, the men had given her up to yesterday to produce the suspect. Mrs. Sookram also said that police had checked at her relatives at Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara after receiving reports that he might be hiding out at an aunt’s home.

Following numerous delays in the commencement of the preliminary inquiry (PI) into the death of 72- year -old Clementine Fiedtkou-Parris, the four men accused of murdering the elderly Robb Street woman, were yesterday notified that after a sevenmonth long incarceration period, they will now be facing a paper committal to determine whether adequate evidence exists, for them to stand trial in the Supreme Court. Orin Hinds, 35, of Burnham Boulevard, Mocha, East Bank Demerara; Cleon Hinds, 34, of 23 Middle Road, Albouystown; Kevin October, 29, of Second Street, Agricola, East Bank Demerara; and Roy Jacobs, 34 of Evan Street, Charlestown; made another appearance before Magistrate Sueanna Lovell at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court. The men had been shuttling back and forth to the court during their sevenmonth incarceration period but the matter could not get underway since many discrepancies concerning the case and the investigation had surfaced, resulting in the accused receiving new dates every time they appeared in court. Yesterday, police prosecutor Neville Jeffers informed the court that they were ready to start the preliminary inquiry into the matter, but informed that a previous application made by

Gunmen beat barbershop owner A 29 -year-old man who was conducting business as normal last evening in his barber shop was beaten mercilessly by two gunmen who reportedly tried to rob him. According to reports the incident occurred around 20:30 hours yesterday at his barbershop in Kitty. Up to press time yesterday Gangaram Hemrai of Shell Road, Kitty was still at the Georgetown Public Hospital’s Accident and Emergency Unit receiving medical attention. This publication was told that the man sustained several lacerations to his face. Reports are that the two men entered the barbershop posing as customers but after Hemrai showed some opposition one of the men brandished a gun and the other a knife. The men then started beating him before fleeing. The battered man was rescued by his relatives and some friends and was subsequently taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital. The matter has since been reported and investigations are ongoing.

the defence could not be processed since investigations into the murder matter were still ongoing. Attorney-at-law Basil Williams, who is representing the accused, had previously requested that the four men face a paper committal. The prosecution claimed yesterday that such a request would prove difficult for the police since they were still carrying on investigations and other persons are expected to be arrested. For the preliminary inquiry, the prosecutor however stated that six police witnesses were ready and available to start their testimony in the matter. That revelation did not sit well with Williams. He argued that after seven months, the prosecution was now ready to provide the court with only police witnesses and no material witnesses. The lawyer demanded to know about civilian witnesses who according to him would have more relevant evidence to offer in the case. He argued that his clients should face a paper committal or be discharged of the matter until the police were ready to commence the PI rather than having the accused imprisoned waiting until the police could arrest the other persons. He even suggested that the prosecution had no statements from the witnesses, but injected that if they did, they should then serve the statements upon his clients so that some start could occur in the men’s matter. The prosecutor, in return, argued that the police were in receipt of several statements. He however said that the relevant persons were out of the jurisdiction. In relation to the paper committal; the prosecutor said that all statements were not in police possession. Jeffers continued to argue that for the care of apprehending other persons allegedly involved in the matter, certain

actions could not be taken by the police. But after another interjection by Williams, the court agreed with the lawyer. The Magistrate advised that she could not wait on the police to arrest persons while the matter before her cannot commence. And after the prosecutor had mentioned that there is enough evidence to prove a prima facie case against the men, the court ordered that statements be served and the evidence of the police be put forward so that the matter against the accused could start. In light of this, Williams was granted his request for the paper committal and the prosecution is to provide the evidence it has against the accused. Orin Hinds, Cleon Hinds, October and Jacobs will return to court on June 8 when the matter is expected to commence. Clementine Parris of Lot 42 Robb Street was killed in her home on June 30, 2011. According to reports, persons unknown hired the accused to murder the woman who was engaged in a property dispute. On the day in question two men went to Parris’s home and requested an audience with her. Upon hearing the persons requesting her presence, she moved to the door where the gunmen opened fire on her. She was hit several times about the body which resulted in her death. It is alleged that after the shooting the suspects made their escape in a waiting car. It is also alleged that the men were caught on video camera reportedly committing the act. It is further alleged that the four accused were paid $400,000 to end the woman’s life.

Trinidad Govt. to take decision Jamaica putting forward on same sex marriage legislation on CCJ PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad - CMC - The Trinidad and Tobago government will “sooner or later” outline its position regarding same sex marriage in the country. “It is a matter being discussed by the Government at the moment and I’m sure that sooner or later you will be provided by a policy decision on such matters,” Foreign Affairs and Communications Minister Suruj Rambachan told reporters at the end of the weekly Cabinet meeting Thursday. Same sex marriage is illegal

in Trinidad and Tobago, but the issue gained momentum this week after United States President Barack Obama gave his support to the measure in his country. The Coalition Advocating for Inclusion of Sexual Orientation (CAISO) here said it welcomed Obama’s statement that the gay and lesbian community should be allowed to marry like everyone else. “I applaud President Obama for what he said because he framed it in a context of equality and what’s

fascinating to me even though marriage is not on CAISO’s advocacy agenda is appears that the leaders in our hemisphere and especially Jamaican Prime Minister, Portia Simpson-Miller are taking locally appropriate leadership steps on equality and citizenship and for gay and lesbian people,” CAISO’s executive director Colin Robinson told reporters. He said that he hoped Obama would not pay a political price for his stance, adding that Obama’s statement made political sense and, “we are hoping that our Prime Minister, Kamla Persad-Bissessar takes locally appropriate steps as well.” The group wants the Equal Opportunity Commission (EOC) to undertake a study of discrimination in Trinidad and Tobago based on sexual orientation and to convene hearings to listen to the experiences of LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bi-Sexual and Transgendered) people.

KINGSTON, Jamaica CMC - The Jamaica government will table legislation to make the Trinidad-based Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) the island’s final court of appeal. Governor General Sir Patrick Allen, delivering the traditional Throne Speech, said that the Portia SimpsonMiller administration intends to table 32 pieces of legislation during this parliamentary year. “We will considerably improve the number and quality of Bills passed, and will strengthen all stages of the legislative process. During this legislative year, approximately 32 bills will be passed, which would be about twice the average of the last few years. “The key pieces of legislation to be passed include, An Act to establish the Caribbean Court of Justice as Jamaica’s final Court of Appeal. This process will involve further

dialogue with the Opposition,” Sir Patrick said. Jamaica, like most of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) countries have signed on to the orginal jurisdiction of the CCJ that acts as an international tribunal that interprets the Revised Treaty of Chaguaramas that governs the regional integration movement. However, only Barbados, Belize and Guyana are signatories to the appellate jurisdiction of the court that was established in 2001 to replace the London-based

Privy Council as the regional final court. Trinidad and Tobago earlier this year announced plans for a phased withdrawal from the Privy Council and earlier this year Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller said her newly elected government would seek to end the long standing relationship with the London-based court. She told reporters Thursday that “the CCJ is critical because Jamaicans, particularly the poor, will never be able to travel to England to get their proper defence.

Barbados to borrow US$183M as part of a ‘secret deal’ with the IDB The Opposition is charging that Government is preparing to borrow US$183 million as part of a “secret deal” with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB). The secret deal, according to chief Barbados Labour Party (BLP) spokesman on the economy, Clyde Mascoll, was the current Fiscal Consolidation

Programme (FCP) that Government had negotiated with the IDB and he warned it could have permanent tax consequences for Barbadians. But Minister of Finance Chris Sinckler responded Wednesday night saying that the accusation of a secret deal was “nonsense”. (Barbados Nation)

The resurrection of the nationalisation idea in Guyana There are serious apprehensions developing in Guyana about the position adopted by the combined opposition. These apprehensions have arisen because of the cuts instituted to the Budget by the combined opposition and by something the president said was proposed by the opposition in respect to the Berbice River Bridge. The cuts inflicted by the combined opposition to the Budget showed a different opposition to what many had expected. And the announcement by the president that a request was made for him to nationalize the Berbice River Bridge has sent chills down the spines of some Guyanese who may have presumed that the free world and Guyana had permanently laid to rest that most controversial process of nationalization. It does seem however as if nationalization is still on some politicians’ minds. It is hoped that the opposition which has not denied that it did suggest nationalization as a means of reducing fares to cross the Berbice River Bridge, can clarify just where it stands on this question because it has dire consequences of foreign investment as it does for many who do not wish to see Guyana go down back that road which brought ruin to our

industries. The fear of returning to a failed model of economic model at the behest of the opposition is worrying to some Guyanese. Many of them are now beginning to understand just how fragile are the comforts that they enjoy and the freedoms that they have tasted for close to twenty years. The future of this country is hanging in the balance because of power-hungry politics all of which was made possible because many Guyanese took certain things for granted either assuming that the PPP would cruise to an easy victory at last November polls or misunderstood the dangers of staying away to express dissatisfaction with the way things were going under the Jagdeo regime. They are now beginning to accept that the gamble they took in staying away from the polls or giving the opposition such a good showing has backfired. The loss of a government majority in the National Assembly has left them feeling insecure and uncertain about the future. They have seen what the opposition is capable of; they have witnessed the naked pursuit of malice, spite and vindictive politics and they know that this same sort of bullyism is what took Guyana down the drain more

than twenty years ago. It is now that many who experimented with their votes are beginning to understand the danger of such an exercise. It is only now that they are beginning to appreciate how dangerously positioned Guyana is and how in the wink of an eye all the progress that was attained over the past twenty years can disappear. This is not what many had anticipated. There were many who had hoped that the new dispensation would have led to an improved political and economic climate. They had hoped that it would have eased political tensions, broken down factionalism and allowed for all the parties to work together for the good of the country.

Instead, what they saw has not pleased them. They saw the parliament being used to flex political muscles, to show who is boss and to exercise political leverage. They saw the effective starving of resources for some state agencies and one constitutional commission which now could lead to many workers being put out of their jobs. They have seen plans for hydropower, titling of Amerindian lands, the continued distribution of free laptops to needy families and the installation of solar panels for those without a regular supply of electricity being dashed. Guyana’s economic prospects have been seriously undermined by the approach of the opposition

which was immature and short-sighted because not only did it deal a savage blow to the economy by withholding twenty billion dollars in spending and by threatening the jobs of hundreds but it also sent negative signal to foreign capital which is needed to develop Guyana. When foreign investors see what took place, when they see how easy it was for important foreign-funded projects to be placed under the axe, they will think twice about investing in Guyana. But more ominous was the report that has not been denied, that the opposition proposed that the government nationalize the Berbice River Bridge in order to secure

reduced fares. One of the main fears of the propertied class in Guyana in the past was the fear that the State could repossess their property and pay them 1939 prices as compensation. The law has been changed and now demands that fair market compensation be offered. But the fact that in this day and age when only autocratic states have pursued nationalization of States assets, it is most disturbing to learn that the possibility of nationalizing the Berbice Bridge could even be mentioned again in Guyana.

Will Central High school be relocated or scrapped? Parents and guardians of students attending Central High School on Wednesday last, met with the school’s administration to discuss, and to vent their anger towards the relocation of the school and its students. This stemmed from an ongoing report about the building being up for sale. However, President of the local alumni chapter, Horace Cummings, told Kaieteur News that while the building is not up for sale, there are informal possibilities of eviction. A previous meeting with the school’s administration and the Ministry of Education had resulted in the discussion of several alternatives, which were later rejected by the gathering of angry parents. The proposal to have the 80year-old Central High School merged with the Lodge Secondary School, created an outrage from the parent body. Merging the two schools will result in Central High School being no longer what it is, and exposing their “hardworking” children to violence and indiscipline of those at Lodge Secondary, the parents concluded. “What goes on at Lodge is no secret. And I would rather my child stay in this

same old building than get mixed up with bad company,” one parent noted. Many others suggested that the government should construct a new building to house the students, so as to keep the heritage of the Central High School alive. Cummings also noted that this possibility was also discussed with Minister of Education, Priya Manickchand, who had no objection, but was concerned about the availability of land space in the city for construction. Cummings explained that the Minister’s main reason for not disagreeing with the relocation of the school was the fact that it has poor facilities. A major one is the nonfunctioning Information Technology (IT) laboratory. Parents are asking that even if the school is to be merged with another, it is understandable that it is done so with one that is of its standard. Suggested schools to merge with were Saint Joseph High and the Brickdam Secondary Schools. A former teacher of the Central High School who was also present at the meeting, fears that a merger will result in the school losing its age old legacy.

- Parents meet administration “It is not fair to those children who work extremely hard to put their school among the top five in the country. They are recognized students. Personally, something like this will shatter my child. She has been working with the aim of carrying on her school’s legacy. “She is now very worried as to what will come of her school. We need to stop thinking about saving money from constructing a new school, and think about the children,” one woman said. Others are hoping that

provisions will be made to work at relocating at the next meeting. Since the building is decades old, parents are calling for a new building, with proper facilities, but no merger. Mr. Cummings said that Minister Manickchand has assured them that any implementation of relocation can only be done at least after two years. He said that it seems as though the Minister’s full cooperation is promising.

GPHC nurse highlights importance US Govt. looks to complete Ed of accessing health care early Ahmad’s prosecution in two weeks … final pre-trial hearing set for Wednesday The final pre-trial hearing for Edul Ahmad, the indicted associate of former President Bharrat Jagdeo, has been set for Wednesday. Following this, the jury selection process will commence. Ahmad who is currently free on a bond had applied for permission to leave the New York jurisdiction to attend a separate trial he is involved with. Judge Dora Irizarry had acceded to his request for permission to travel to the District of New Jersey “so that he may appear in court on a civil matter.” Ahmad has retained as defence attorney, Steven Kartagener, and according to the US Court reports, “Neither party anticipates filing motions in limine.” His trial has been adjusted due to scheduling conflicts and the US Government is contending that it will just need two weeks to conclude its prosecution against Ahmad.

Ed Ahmad According to the US reports, the defence team is looking to complete the defence in a week and as such the courts is looking to set aside one month for the trial. The jury selection process will commence by the following Monday after which the trial is expected to begin. In December it was reported by the New York Post, that Queens-based Guyanese businessman Ahmad had entered into “extensive plea negotiations” that had been slated to last

for several months. Ahmad was arrested last July on charges of operating a $50 million mortgage-fraud scheme in Queens. He faces a maximum of 30 years in jail. He is out on $2.5 million bail. According to the Post article, court records also revealed that three alleged coconspirators — Ahmad’s cricket pals and employees — were also indicted in an associated case last month. Queens-based brokers, Qayaam Farrouq, Mohamed Gurmohamed and Steve Massiah were charged with defrauding banks and mortgage companies by falsifying mortgage- loan applications to make borrowers appear more creditworthy to financial institutions, the US newspaper reports. The federal authorities later dropped charges against Massiah. Ahmad’s relationship with Meeks came under intense scrutiny last year after the Democratic congressman revealed that he had received the $40,000 payment from Ahmad in 2007. Meeks only revealed the payment after Ahmad was questioned by the FBI last year. He claims he repaid the money following the quizzing. The House ethics committee is probing whether the payment was a gift and not a loan, as the congressman has maintained.

Seeking health care too late can, without a doubt, prove to be detrimental to some patients. According to Staff Nurse attached to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), Joanne Blenman, some patients attempt to access health care only when they are confronted with issues that cannot be reversed. Nurse Blenman’s disclosure was made on Wednesday while she applied the finishing touches to a diabetic foot care booth which was part of a health fair held through the collaboration of the GTM Insurance Companies and the GPHC. The fair was held at GTM Robb and Hinck Streets, Georgetown office. As part of the commemoration of International Nurses’ Week, the nursing staff contribution was intended to raise awareness of the need to access health care regularly and in a timely way. According to Nurse Blenman, “Although there might be both good and bad coming from some in the nursing profession, all we want to do today (Wednesday) is to reflect on what nurses actually represent in terms of the health care system.” She said that despite the fact that nurses are faced with a plethora of challenges on a daily basis there are many things “we do to provide health care for our citizens...” Last Wednesday’s activity, she said, was instrumental in helping nurses not only to deliver a service, but also to step out of the hospital setting and directly sensitise members of the public to the importance of doing simple things such as having their blood pressure tested or even having their feet examined.

Nursing Assistant Sarah Tyndall-Sam (left) and Nurse Joanne Blenman “A lot of patients we see at the health centres and hospitals are coming way too late, when problems are exacerbated and there is nothing really we can do, so we are using this forum to sensitise the public. “We can’t have the whole nursing staff out here, but we are aiming to ensure that persons are aware of certain things pertaining to their health such as eye care, testing for diabetes and other conditions.” The sensitisation strategy, Nurse Blenman said, is geared at helping individuals to be better self-managers even as nurses anticipate improvements in the health care system, inclusive of better working conditions and

better working hours. She noted that despite the odds, there are many nurses who are committed to going the extra mile and are therefore always willing to emphasise the importance of utilising the services offered at the public hospital. Addressing the issue of diabetes, Nurse Blenman noted that individuals could use common parameters such as their family’s history and their ethnicity. Persons of African descent are more predisposed to being diagnosed with the disease. “Don’t wait until something goes wrong then come in to find out that you have diabetes. TGI tags June for normal cement supply as another shipment arrives Guyana’s biggest supplier of cement, TCL Guyana Inc. (TGI), is aiming to regularize the local market by next month even though industrial problems continue at its Trinidad base. Yesterday, the company received 4,350 metric tonnes (MT) of cement and supplies are on target to meet the 17,000MT for this month, a statement said yesterday. Following industrial relations problems from TGI’s source at Trinidad Cement Limited several weeks ago, there were reported shortages on the local market with price jumping more than $500 to $2,000 per bag. Government had threatened local distributors that it will take actions if it discovered that there was

hoarding. TGI yesterday said that another 4000 MT is due to arrive over this weekend. A further 9100 MT is expected before the end of May. Shipments have been originating at TGI’s sister companies within the region Arawak Cement Company Limited in Barbados and Caribbean Cement Company Limited in Jamaica during industrial relations activity at the regular source, Trinidad Cement Limited (TCL). TGI also insisted yesterday that its source company, TCL has continued to steadily ramp up its production and produced 26,634 MT in April, despite the strikes. “The impasse is approaching the end of the 90-

Rice farmers protest non-payment

Rice farmers from across Region Two staged a protest over millions of dollars owed to them for the past two years, by Mahaicony Rice Mills Ltd. Bearing placards that suggested “GRDB does not serve the interest of farmers”, “Farmers want the Ministry of Agriculture in Essequibo now”, and “Close MRL until Rice farmers are paid” farmers vented their frustration at the Region Two Administration office, at Anna Regina. While some farmers are maintaining that the company has owed them for more than two years, others claim that they have been owed by the company for the last crop, dating back to last October, 2011. Deochand Singh, who said that the company owes him $1.2M since last October, is further indicating that several calls to the MRL have since gone unanswered. Another irate farmer, Naithram who was issued a “bounced” cheque, said that the company owes him almost $500,000. He too said that calls to the company proved futile. Regional Chairman, Parmanand Persaud, told the

frustrated rice farmers, that he supports their peaceful protest. He added that the Government has since suspended the licence issued to Mahaicony Rice Mills and also seized the assets of the company’s two rice factories, at Vilvoorden and Paradise,

both on the Essequibo Coast, with the intent of reselling those assets and ensuring that the farmers owed, be paid. Persaud said that in the past government injected $19M to another Rice Miller to assist farmers who were owed.

for a ruling.” TGI’s Plant Manager, Mark Bender, acknowledges that there was a supply shortfall in April in Guyana but signals a return to full market satisfaction going forward. “We are relentless in our efforts to consistently supply

our market and are working assiduou s l y towards quickly attaining adequate supplies in the ensuing month.” Bender also stressed that TGI has not increased its ex-factory price for either bulk or bagged cement and asked retailers to

refrain from product hoarding and price gouging, all in the interest of the construction sector and the country’s overall economic development. Guyana’s market demand currently stands at approximately 17,500MT per month.

Govt. ‘stranglehold’ on Judiciary - ‘Put up' with substantial attracts bitter debate amendment or 'shut up' - AG By Gary Eleazar The autonomy of the local judiciary and its independence from political control by the executive branch of government on Thursday evening came into focus when A Partnership for National Unity (APNU)’s motion, calling on the House to ensure that the judiciary receives funding directly from the Consolidated Fund came up for debate. The motion was piloted by APNU’s point man on finance, Carl Greenidge. “The situation we find ourselves in is frustrating…It flies in face of the Guyana Constitution”. He was speaking to the fact that the Supreme Court is a Budget Agency under the schedule of Estimates in the Budget and receives its funds through this mechanism. The money is released upon approval by the Minister and Legislature. Greenidge suggested that there are some entities in Guyana that enjoy certain privileges in the constitution but are “frustrated.” He said that the motion is simply asking for that specific privilege for the Judiciary to be enshrined and he suggests that his reason for this course of action is to ensure that the ‘rule of law’ and the ‘separation of powers’ are upheld. Greenidge pointed to the

Constitution of Guyana, which he argues, enshrines that “all persons presiding over courts shall exercise their function independently of the control and direction of any other person or authority and shall be free and independent from political, executive, and any other form of direction and control.” Greenidge said that by making the Supreme Court a Budget Agency, the administration has made the entity subordinate to the Legislative and Executive branches of Government. He suggested that overall financial guidelines set by Government will apply. The Judiciary needs to have a sum en bloc, and not at the whims of the government or

legislature where changes can affect the capacity of the entity. Muzzling a judiciary can take many forms, according to Greenidge. But this was a point strenuously objected to by the government spokesperson on Legal Affairs, Anil Nandlall, who called for Greenidge to withdraw the “attack.” Greenidge in his defence said that he was making no specific reference, but was merely looking to point out that the mechanisms at work could hold ranks in the judiciary under ransom. “What we are proposing is that the Constitution is supreme. Delete the judiciary from the schedule of estimates,” he adamantly

proposed. Finance Minister Dr Ashni Singh pointed to the fact that the motion was similar to others proposed by Greenidge, but he had thought that they would have been withdrawn altogether. He pointed to the talks which were held at the Office of the President between APNU, the Alliance for Change and the government. He said that they were all on the agenda for discussion. “There was no lack of clarity on these issues…we discussed the constitutional matters,” said Dr Singh, who added also that it was agreed that the list of matters would be subject to further study. He said that even Greenidge had acceded to the

fact that the matters needed to be subjected to further study and could possibly be deferred to the Constitutional Standing Committee of Parliament. “This is a body that has a mandate for continuous work and would be the appropriate place to deal with the matters at hand. There can be no doubt that this matter is at best referred to the Standing Committee on Constitutional Reform and this was agreed on in the multi-party talks,” Dr Singh explained. He said that notwithstanding this agreement with Government, Greenidge still proceeded with the motion. “I don’t know how to interpret this. Is this a reneging on the agreement when we met?” This, he noted, was done bypassing any need for a study and calls for definitive measures, and as such, he urged Greenidge to withdraw the motion. House Speaker Raphael Trotman interjected that Thursday evening’s exercise would merely yield a declaratory statement, but cannot alter the Constitution. This, he said, would require a two-thirds majority vote in the House. But Greenidge sought to explain that his motion was merely looking to amend the Fiscal Management and

Brian Tiwarie is Spain’s Honorary Consul to Guyana Spain has named Brian Tiwarie, a major contractor for mainly Government works, as its Honorary Consul to Guyana. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs yesterday, this appointment followed a request from the Government of the Kingdom of Spain for the approval of the appointment of Tiwarie as its Honorary Consul. Yesterday, the businessman received his

Exequatur (an official authorization issued by a host country to a consular agent, permitting him to perform his official duties) from Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett, Minister of Foreign Affairs officially commissioning him as Honorary Consul of the Kingdom of Spain. The release said that Tiwarie is a citizen of Guyana by birth and was experienced in the automotive industry; is

He is currently a member of the Private Sector Commission, Guyana Manufacturing and Services Commission Limited and the

relations between Guyana and Spain and the possibility to explore new forms of bilateral cooperation,” the Ministry said. Guyana established formal diplomatic relations with the Kingdom of Spain on October 12, 1979.

Accountability Act and not the Constitution of Guyana. Alliance for Change Chairman Khemraj Ramjattan, supporting the motion, said that it is but a correction to an aberration. Ramjattan argued that the Judiciary can also be affected negatively by administrative arrangement not just adjudicatory levels. At the Administrative level, Ramjattan said that “the executive of the day meddling with the financial resources of that branch can damage its independence”. He said that the motion is intended to “cure that potential damage and ensure that which is provided for in the Constitution, where all courts shall be autonomous and funded through a direct charge from the Consolidated Fund.” Ramjattan was adamant that the opposition is not pushing for unfettered access to the Consolidated Fund by the Judiciary, saying that the Constitution will determine the expenditure limits. Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Anil Nandlall, whilst concurring with Greenidge that the motion raises a matter of crucial importance, namely the judiciary and its independence, referred to past actions by the People’s National Congress (PNC). He said that the current administration is committed to ensuring that the Judiciary “remains pure, independent and uncontaminated by any extraneous influence including political”. Nandlall suggested that the ruling administration is very aware of the history that the Judiciary has been brought to bear. He drew reference to the flag of the PNC flying on the apex of the judiciary and suggested that there are several other attempts documented that point to interference. The Legal Affairs Minister said that, “we are not unaware of the pressure brought to bear on the judiciary, so those now crusading as protagonists of judicial impartiality must know that they are the ones who contaminated the judiciary by politics. “They used the judiciary as a political weapon, jailing several of our leaders, so we are aware of the importance of the independence of the judiciary.” Nandlall informed the House that “since we came into power, initiatives have been taken to ensure that the damage to the judiciary has been reversed. We have been reversing it step by step.”

Women fight over man, both remanded

T

wo women, one a victim and the other a defendant, will both be spending the weekend in the lockups after they were remanded to jail by Magistrate Hazel OctiveHamilton at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court. Alicia Mentore, the defendant, and Nancy London, the complainant, were placed in state custody after a fight broke out between the two women over a man with whom the defendant once shared a relationship. The police said that on May 7, at Thomas Street, Kitty, Mentore unlawfully and maliciously wounded Dexter Smith, the father of her children. She also assaulted his reputed wife, London. To the charges the woman pleaded guilty and sought to explain. The police said that on the day of the incident Mentore went to Smith’s residence. When she arrived, Smith answered the door and upon seeing the defendant he scolded her for turning up at his home. As the man and the mother of his children spoke, the police said that the other victim, London came to the door and asked Smith about Mentore’s presence at his residence. It was at this point, the prosecutor said, that Mentore pushed the door open, hitting London in the face in the process. An argument ensued between the two women and Mentore, it was said, abused both of the victims. The police said that Mentore then began to hit the father of her children resulting in the man going to the police station to make a report. Medical forms were given to the victims and reports were provided in relation to injuries the persons received. Mentore had a different story from the prosecution. She said that her former partner had informed her that he and the other woman were not involved in a relationship and that she could come at his home at any time. The woman said that on the day of the incident she went to Smith’s home to collect money for her child when her former sister-inlaw answered the door and told her that Smith was not at home. She however pushed the door open, entered the house and went straight to the

bedroom of her former partner and entered. The woman continued that while in the room she noticed the two victims lying in bed. The man rose and took her out of the bedroom and asked why she was at his premises. The woman said the man then told her that he was going to get a pair of pants and that they would go outside the house to talk. But as the man exited the bedroom, the other woman started pulling Smith back into the room while Mentore held on to Smith’s pants, pulling him outside of the bedroom. But before Mentore could conclude her story the court injected and offered the defendant a scenario where she could have easily avoided a confrontation if she had taken a certain course of action. It was later revealed by Smith that both women had scrambled each other in what he maintained was a fight. He said his current companion was bent on sending Mentore to jail despite him requesting the matter to come to an end for the sake of his children. Smith defended the mother of his children after his current partner had alleged that Mentore had inflicted certain injuries on her. Smith claimed that the marks on London’s body were already there since she recently underwent a surgery. Having heard enough and contemplating what should be done in the matter, the court opted to remand all three parties but for the sake of the children involved, both females were remanded to jail until Monday while the father was not. The Magistrate said that by Monday her mind would have had time to study what action should be taken. Mentore however pleaded with the court that she had not done anything to the defendant and it was she who was the victim. She however enjoyed every moment of the victim’s misfortune. She laughed at London all the way to the holding area.

ImmigrationTALK: Berbice woman scared of abusive Questions & Answers lover, haunted by threat to her life By Attorney Gail S. Seeram Through this “Question & Answer” column, our goal is to answer your immigration questions. Many of you have questions on backlog time and eligibility – we seek to clarify these issues and more. We appreciate your comments and questions. If you have a question that you would like answered in this column, please email: Gail@Go2Lawyer.com. Question #1: I was returning to the U.S. as a permanent resident when the Officer at the border took me into a room, asked me some questions, and took away my green card. What does this mean? Answer #1: As a permanent resident, you must always apply for admission every time you return to the U.S. Your travel history or maybe a prior criminal history may have prompted the Officer to take away from green card. Next, you will either be scheduled for a deferred inspection interview at your local Custom and Border Protection office or you will receive a notice of hearing to

Gail S. Seeram appear in Immigration Court. This is a serious situation and you should consult with an immigration attorney. Question #2: I owe some taxes to the Internal Revenue Service, can I still file for U.S. citizenship? Answer #2: I would advise to pay in full any taxes due and owing. When you file for U.S. citizenship one of the requirements you must meet is good moral character for the last five years (three years if married to a U.S. citizen). If you owe taxes, this will show that you lack good moral character and

Immigration will have a ground to deny your U.S. citizenship application. Question #3: My U.S. citizen parent filed for me and I am unmarried. Can my child who is age 5 process under my pending application and come to the U.S. with me? Answer #3: Yes, but the required documents must be submitted to the U.S. Embassy proving you are a parent of the child. The child’s other biological parent must consent for the child to emigrate to the U.S. Question #4: My green card expires in two years, can I still travel with this conditional green card? Answer #4: Yes, a two-year green card gives you conditional residency but you have all the benefits of a permanent resident, such as traveling outside the U.S. and working. The only limitation is that it expires in two years versus 10 years. Remember that 90 days before your card expires, you must file a petition to remove conditions or your status will be terminated and you can be placed in removal proceedings.

Juveniles placed on $300,000 bail on Break and Enter charges Three juveniles who were caught red handed in the New Amsterdam market were on Friday placed on $100,000 bail each by Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo when they appeared before her at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court on three charges of Break and Enter and Larceny. Two of the youths are 14 years old while the other is 15. Two hail from Angoy’s Avenue (Cow Dam) while the third lives at Canefield East Canje. According to Prosecutor Corporal, Roberto Figueira, the three accused, on Tuesday last, at Strand New Amsterdam, broke and entered five stalls in the New Amsterdam market. The accused allegedly broke into the clothing stall of Lynette David and stole and damaged clothing to the value of $240,000. They are also accused of

breaking into the confectionary stall of Nizam Ally and stealing a quantity of items to the cost of $28,840. The third charge states that on the same day they broke into the stall of Nazmoon Mohamed and stole a quantity of Coffee, Gera, Ovaltine, ketchup, curry powder and Massala to the total cost of $13,120. They were not required to plead. The three youths were apprehended after a lengthy search in the market that lasted from Tuesday night until Wednesday morning. The victims had secured their respective stalls around 16:30 hrs. Around 21:00 hrs constables at the market heard strange noises emanating from inside the market. Upon checking the three youths were seen. They made a run for it and subsequently hid in a stall when the security went

after them. Upon checking it was realized that the locks for four stalls were broken off; among the stalls were vegetable, confectionary, and grocery stalls. Pieces of fruits and vegetables and other remains were strewn about the market and there was evidence that most of the things stolen in the market were consumed by the youths. In an effort to evade capture the trio raised a zinc sheet off the market roof and jumped into a boutique and hid themselves until morning, when they were found. According to the Acting Town Clerk of New Amsterdam, “The amount of food that they ate earlier had an effect on them as they defecated in the boutique.” They will have to return to court on May 29.

While mothers will be celebrating Mother’s Day in the company of loved ones, one mother would be afraid because she anticipates the execution of a death threat on her life by the man with whom she shared a relationship. Donetta Sibdhannie, 37, of Number Four Village, West Coast Berbice, says she is being threatened and abused by her 25- year- old lover (name given) of Rosignol Village. The relationship which started four years ago is now riddled with daily abuses of various sorts. Sibdhannie says that she is suffering. She stated, too, that she is not getting much attention from the law enforcement officials at Blairmont and Fort Wellington Police Stations. She is now living a life of constant fear. She noted that she ended the relationship with the individual a few months ago and he became dissatisfied with the move, and has become very abusive since. The woman said that three Sundays ago “he came home and said that some girl told him that I [Donetta] called her on her phone and said I cussed her up”. Sibdhannie denied doing that and the man, she said, became abusive. “He started to cuff me up in my head— he gave me three cuffs in my head. I went to Blairmont Station and made a report and they told me they will locate him— Two weeks after, nothing of the sort, and I ain’t able running, running at the station”. The woman is fed up of this since the man would normally hear that she visited a station and would abuse her even more. Sibdhannie, who is a businesswoman, made a CD Cart to sell compact discs for the man “and it cost me $130,000”. She said that the man later sold the cart without her knowledge. Later that night, she decided to take all of his clothes to his mother’s home. “I didn’t stay in my house anymore because I am scared— he always threatening me, telling me if I throw his clothes out again, he will beat me bad and that

Nurse Blenman noted, further, that while some persons may not be willing to wait to access medical care because of the crowding situation that obtains at some health facilities, it is in their best interest to see beyond a large number of persons in waiting and ensure that they gain the needed care. She also made reference

to the fact that waiting to access medical care is not unique to Guyana. However, in an attempt to help address the problem of crowding at health facilities, Nurse Blenman asserted that it was for this very reason that primary health care systems were introduced. This, she said, was

designed to ensure that persons are able to access health services within their community rather than flock to the GPHC. “There will always be emergencies, and at times, the ability of health care providers may not be the way you might want, so it is often best to access services in your own community.”

Abuse victim: Donetta Sibdhannie

he went to jail already just for slapping me but this time it would be worse”. “So I decided to run away”, she said. Last Monday, upon returning to her home, Sibdhannie found the entire house ransacked. It had been broken into. Her money and important documents were all gone. But she had another surprise; the man was waiting for her in the house. “I was trying to be nice but he wasn’t nice to me— he was threatening me, and I was there just begging, trying to avoid all these things; he was in a rage.” The man then locked her up in the bedroom and took away her cell phone “and I was there— just trying to be nice”. He subsequently left and she was able to open the locked door and get out of the house. On Tuesday, she alleged that he did the same thing, “locked me up in the house— took away my phone and he slapped me to the wall and these kinds of things”. She later reported the matter to the Fort Wellington Police Station, “so I told the officer and he told me not to go back home and in the night, that they will get the patrol vehicle to pick him up.” She followed orders and stayed by her mother. On Wednesday morning, she returned home at 10:00 hrs to go to church. “When I thought there was nobody in the house, he was there and he snatched me up and choked me— he told me ‘you— you gotta dead— before long, I gotta kill you”. The woman called back the station and asked for a follow- up on the matter. On Thursday evening she called the station to come and pick him up since he was in the house, “bullying me and

took away my house door key. “When he did that I hid and called the police and the Corporal in charge told me a patrol pick-up will be here in an hour’s time”. Sibdhannie waited and waited while the man was in the home all the time. She waited for an hour “and they did not come— I sit outside and waited— no vehicle did come”. “I scared to go to any one of the police stations right now; I don’t want to go for anybody to see me and tell him I went to the station”. “He torments me and keeps threatening me and I am very much scared for my life so I just have to take things easy and cool— I know what type of person he is”. Sibdhannie is scared for her life because when the man sees this report in the media, he will become even more upset but she is hoping the authorities will nab him before he gets to her, so she can spend a peaceful Mother’s Day on Sunday. “Right now I need him out of my house and out of my life, because I am very much scared”. Sibdhannie is a mother of three and keeps her whereabouts unknown. She is living a life on the run and watching her movements very carefully. The man, she said, used to beat her up badly in the past, “most times in my stomach— places you would not see— One time, September 2011, he was sentenced to six weeks in jail for hitting me”. The sentence was reduced to a month and he was ordered to seek counseling, which he never did. “My heart and my mind are out of the relationship but he is not taking let- go because he said only death can separate us and I am scared”.

Nursing - a man’s job too

Left to Right: Male nurses: Anesh Humphrey, Andrew Malroop, Selwyn Semple and Ryan Mallay By Leon Suseran Whenever nurses are mentioned or talked about, the mind races instantly to the female; so much so that we have come to associate the profession as being one in which only women serve. However, on this International Nurses’ Day, there are numerous guys who have dedicated their lives and made the choice to become nurses. A few male nurses are in training at the New Amsterdam School of Nursing in Angoy’s Avenue. Anesh Humphrey, Andrew Malroop, Selwyn Semple and Ryan Mallay are four male nursing students at the Nursing School. They are among a dozen other

students— females— at the institution. They are pursuing the Professional Nursing Programme, which they started six months ago. Commenting on what brought them to the field of nursing, Humphrey said that he always wanted to be in the health sector “and I find nursing well suited. I always wanted to help and give care and assistance to society and family members”. Nurse Malroop, who was the most vocal of the four, said that so far he has learnt a “great number of things”. He added, “In various areas of the programme like Psychology, we were able to appreciate human behaviour.” The nurse noted that he

Berbice man pleads guilty to abduction The man who is on trial in the Berbice High Court on a charge of abduction has changed his plea to guilty. Shafraz Subratalli is on trial in the Berbice High Court before Justice James BovellDrakes and a mixed jury on a charge of abduction committed on December 15, 2009 in Berbice. He reportedly abducted a girl under 16 years of age at Johanna, Black Bush Polder. The trial which was set to begin last Friday did not get underway because the man’s lawyer, Kim Kyte-John was absent. She was said to have been out of the jurisdiction. The matter was then adjourned to last Tuesday. However, on Tuesday the matter was further adjourned to Thursday after his lawyer Mrs Kim Kyte-John asked for some time to be fully acquainted with the case. The turn of event came on Thursday when the trial was set to continue. Before the matter began attorney at law Kim Kyte-John informed the court that the accused would like to adopt a certain course of action and change his plea to guilty. This was accepted by the state.

The matter is set for conclusion on Wednesday when prosecutor Attorney at law, Rondell Weaver, is expected to present the state’s case. Attorney at law Kim Kyte John is then expected to present her plea of mitigation. Justice Bovell Drakes is expected to deliver his verdict after. A Preliminary Inquiry was conducted by Magistrate Krisendat Persaud and the man was committed to stand trial in the High Court. He has been out on $150,000 bail ever since.

enjoys the sociology course which exposes him to new knowledge and how to socialize, as nurses, and with people in the society. Nurse Semple added that without the training, they would not be able to communicate with patients in the hospitals “so I think the programme is really interesting.” When the time comes for him to fully engage in the tasks associated with his profession, Malroop is expecting to put all the skills he would have learnt at nursing school into practice. “I am expecting to help all peoples in the society because nursing is a helping profession. After the training for three years, I will like to be a part of the society. We just want to follow the rules and the guidelines in the training, because according to the Nightingale Pledge, I will expect my behaviour and delivery of health...to be that eminent and sufficient that the clients and people in the society can say, ‘ok...they are pleased to administer good health and good care to people after the three years”. Semple added that he is prepared to deal with the challenges that come with the profession especially when it is time for him to go out to the hospitals and health centres to work. Some of the subjects being

N/A School of Nursing pursued and dealt with by the trainees include Fundamentals of Communication, Anatomy and Physiology, Psychology, Sociology, Maths and English as well as the crux of the entire training, Nursing Professionalism. He was angry that people “say it is a ‘gay’ profession, and most of the times when they [society] would see you in the uniform, they would say, ‘what ya’ll doing to yourselves’, — there is a lot of stigma against male nurses.” Malroop added that “men who come in to do nursing are real men, because some of the things they face up in nursing, some people can’t face them.” Being just six months in the programme, the trainees have not had a taste of the outside as yet in terms of hospital on-the-job-practical. That will be done during the second year of training. The trainees are quite excited about that, especially

Malroop since he believes “that is what nursing is...it is a practice”. He said that it gets boring sometimes just sitting in a class, writing and reading. “ And so, on this International Nurses’ Day 2012, when we zoom in and focus on the caregivers among our midst in the form

of our nurses in Guyana and around the world, let us be reminded that nursing, as much as it may be thought of as a woman’s job, one to which more women flock, is just a man’s job as well. Today’s observances are being observed under the theme: ‘Closing the gap: From evidence to action’.

Logger’s body found floating in Pomeroon River Exactly three days after he went missing, 43-year-old Samuel James, formerly of Aripirako, Upper Pomeroon River was discovered floating in the vicinity of the Jacklow area, Thursday morning. Relatives who launched a search for him on Tuesday last, the same day he was involved in a boat collision, found James, the father of 11, with his face badly disfigured. Reports indicated that James left his Aripirako

residence for Charity, some 14 miles away with the intention of purchasing fuel, when the 75 horse power boat he was traveling in collided with another boat, at Jacklow. On Wednesday persons in the Jacklow area noticed James’s badly damaged boat and engine drifting at Martindale, Lower Pomeroon. The police were subsequently informed and an investigation has since been launched.

DEAR EDITOR, I have been traveling to Guyana for the past two years. People from home often ask me, “Why do you like Guyana? Isn’t it just scary, uncomfortable and inconvenient?” CHALLENGE Although I was born and lived 17 years in Guyana, living in Guyana is challenging for me. I can live with the garbage on every street, and I can tolerate the non-stop loud music always blasting everywhere. I can look past some of the unhealthy restaurants. But I just can’t stand the poor customer service at most businesses. I just can’t take grown men (especially the bus drivers) urinating in public for everyone to see. This is embarrassing and disgusting to me. EXPERIENCE But I enjoy the Guyanese experience. I am always amazed at how people who have so little material possessions are still so grateful. They have so little, yet they don’t complain much. They are such a thankful people. I also admired the Guyanese people’s tenacious spirit, and their strong faith in God. INSPIRATION I get inspiration from the Guyanese people. No matter what life throws at them they continue to strive. No matter how many times life knocks them down, they still get up. These people rise up like lions. They refuse to rest until they conquer every obstacle. They are a resilient people. They don’t give up, and they never surrender. They have the strength of an elephant, and the hunger of a lion. CULTURE The Guyanese culture is different from any other culture that I have ever experienced. I have lived and worked in Iraq and Afghanistan. When I am living in Guyana, I feel like I am submerged into an unfamiliar culture. And I have to learn to live with the dissimilarities I encounter. Sometimes this leads to frustration (why can’t they do it the way we do it in America?) Once in awhile humour (where did they ever come up with that?), perhaps annoyance (I’m so tired of

potholes and beggars). During one of my visits to Kimbia, which is located 70 miles up the Berbice River, I had an opportunity to talk with the locals about drinking water from the infested river. All of them believed that you could NOT get sick from drinking river water. Period. They believed that drinking the river water makes them stronger. I thought this was a rather absurd thing to regard as true, and was sometimes bothered by the fact that they could believe something so asinine. On various occasions I tried to prove them wrong, but to no avail. They firmly believed that’s how it was. Once I did a demonstration for them using my PUR Purifier of Water - Water treatment in a packet to show them the river water contained viruses and bacteria that can make them sick. Over time, I realised it didn’t matter what I said to them, I am not going to change their mind. That experience had a profound impact on me. How can people be so blind, stupid, and ignorant? Yet, I realise that if I had lived in Kimbia all my life, I too would be just like them. But for the grace of God, there go I. CHANGE How has living in Guyana changed me? I am a more grateful person. I thank God now for the little things in life like hot water, indoor toilets, washing machines, and air condition. I have become more caring and giving. Because there are so many poor people in Guyana, it makes me want to give more. It makes me more humble. Living in Guyana is also therapeutic. When I am there, I forget all of my troubles. It makes me a happier person. I am more relaxed, and I laugh and tell more jokes when I am there. There is less stress there. In conclusion, living in Guyana is challenging and rewarding. Living in Guyana will change and inspire you. You will love and hate living in Guyana. You will enjoy the culture and also get frustrated by it. Anthony Pantlitz Brooklyn, NY

The PPP intended all along to use... From page 5 should the PPP be allowed to do so. The opposition has stated it will restore the LCDS funding when the PPP proves it has the money to spend. Therefore, the PPP is seeking to force an election over NCN and GINA. That is it in a nutshell. The majority of PPP supporters do not care about NCN or GINA. NCN is a profitable agency and has stated it will not lose jobs. GINA lost a handful of jobs. Some of these people will be employed at other media houses once new media licences are granted. Again, no real permanent loss of jobs. Yet, the PPP is trying to call an election over this. Who in their right mind calls an election over no permanent jobs lost and for its right to spend billions on LCDS it does not have in its hands and has no realistic chance of collecting based on history? What political party would call an election over such non-issues? To add insult to the stupidity of the PPP, the opposition has publicly guaranteed to restore the LCDS funding if the PPP could prove it will get the funds. There is really no issue over the budget, none. So why did the PPP play this filthy game of behaving as if the world ended when the budget was cut? Because the PPP intended all along to use the budget process to call a snap election. The PPP wanted to call a new election on November 29, 2011, the day after the election. This despotic bunch of PPP leaders believes complete power is its Godgiven right. This was part of its plan. This cabal that has usurped the PPP and denied its supporters and membership democracy and the right to choose their

leadership has no respect for democracy and the wishes of the people. It does not want the power the people gave it on November 28, 2011. It wants all the power, absolute power and maximum power. The PPP intended to polarize the nation over the budget and to politically divide and conquer. The PPP genuinely believed it could politically benefit from the budget fallout which it created. The plan was to con its followers to support it in a new election by crying wolf and weeping crocodile tears claiming how the opposition is attacking it. The PPP exposed itself. The childish games will not work. Only the PPP would try to sink this country into another election over the opposition demanding greater accountability, transparency, living within your means and fiscal restraint. Guyanese flee to countries every day that practice these virtues. The PPP’s leaders are really afraid of what NICIL will reveal once it is exposed. They want to desperately call an election and hope to fool enough people to get that majority to prevent NICIL’s books from being opened. Is this how these chaps really think of the Guyanese people and of the party’s supporters? Is this the insulting view they have of those who religiously vote for them? Are their supporters nothing but cattle, chattels and objects to them? Do they care about the people? Do they know their own supporters, who demand transparency and accountability in their own family budgets, want the same from the PPP government? More power to thieves will rob us blind leaving us with nothing. Choose your conscience over the corrupt. M. Maxwell

The Abigail Column Wife’s constant criticism alienating her husband

DEARABIGAIL, I am in my late early 30s, have a good career, am wellrespected and well-educated, and have many friends and acquaintances. I keep in reasonable shape. I love my son, my siblings and my mother, and always want to do the best I can. The problem is “Janice,” my 31-year-old wife of two years. She criticises me constantly. I can’t do anything without her

berating me for doing it wrong or irritating her in the process. Janice also gossips negatively about my friends and their wives, and then wonders why she isn’t invited to their social events. My wife has a terrific career, but whines constantly about her job. Other than her sister, she doesn’t have close friends. Janice and I argue a lot, mostly because I have grown tired of her knocking everything I do. I have threatened to walk out more than once, but each time she claims she will be nicer and I believe it. Janice seemed warm and

fun when we first began dating. Now I wonder how our relationship evolved into this mess. Drained Dear Drained, Insist your wife treats you with some sort of decency. Otherwise, quite frankly, you’d be better off if she left the house. Counseling is still a good idea. It can help you verbalize your frustration instead of becoming too angry to be effective. It also can help Janice understand how her constant negativity and criticism undermine your relationship.

Ronaldinho expected to be left out of Olympics SAO PAULO (AP) Brazil coach Mano Menezes did not picked Ronaldinho for exhibitions ahead of the London Olympics, limiting the player’s chance of making it to the games. Neymar, Alexandre Pato, Oscar and Paulo Henrique Ganso were among the 23 players summoned for the exhibitions against Denmark on May 26, the United States on May 30, Mexico on June 3 and Argentina on June 9. The players selected on Friday are expected to form the core of the team that will try to win its first Olympic gold medal, and Menezes hinted that those not on the list likely won’t be in London. ‘’It’s correct to affirm that these 23 names are the base of the Olympic team,’’ Menezes said. ‘’It’s unlikely we will make any changes. After making evaluations in the last few months, we think these are the names (for London).’’ Only six players on the list are older than 23 - David Luiz, Thiago Silva, Jefferson, Daniel Alves, Marcelo and

Hulk. The Olympic tournament is played with under-23 squads, but each team may use three over-23 players. Two-time world player of the year Ronaldinho had been constantly summoned by Menezes despite poor performances with Brazilian club Flamengo, but Menezes said it was time try something different. ‘’If things are not going well, you make a change,’’ Menezes said. ‘’But you have to respect Ronaldinho, he is a world champion. He is the type of player who can rebound and surprise everyone.’’ The 32-year-old Ronaldinho had been in the list of 52 players pre-selected for the London Games. He played in the 2008 Beijing Games, when Brazil lost the semifinal to Lionel Messi’s Argentina and finished with the bronze. Inter Milan goalkeeper Julio Cesar and Ramires, who helped Chelsea reach the Champions League final, were in that pre-list but also were left out by Menezes on

Mano Menezes Friday. Real Madrid’s Kaka didn’t even make the 52player list. Alexandre Pato is getting another chance in the team after missing several Brazil matches because of a series of injuries while playing with AC Milan. The 20-year-old Neymar will be the main player carrying Brazil’s hopes in London, but other promising athletes included in the list are playmaker Lucas and forward Oscar, who scored Brazil’s three goals in the 3-2 victory over Portugal in the Under20 World Cup final last year. The Olympic tournament is the only significant soccer competition Brazil hasn’t won. The five-time World Cup champions won the Olympic silver in 1984 and 1988 and the bronze in 1996 and 2008.

Royal Challengers complete the double over Warriors Things just aren’t going right for Pune Warriors in the fifth season of the Indian Premier League, as despite a new captain in Steven Smith and wholesale changes to the playing eleven, they slumped to yet another loss - this time to Royal Challengers Bangalore by 35 runs on Friday night. This was RCB’s third consecutive win and they are now behind only Delhi Daredevils and Kolkata Knight Riders in the points table. As was widely speculated, Sourav Ganguly was ‘rested’ for this match with Smith, who had led the Sydney Sixers to a tournament win in the inaugural edition of the Big Bash League, taking over the captaincy of the Warriors. Apart from Ganguly, Pune Warriors also left out Mithun Manhas, Ashish Nehra, Murali Kartik and Wayne Parnell; with Mohnish Mishra, Manish Pandey, Rahul Sharma, Krishnakant Upadhyay and Alfonso Thomas replacing them. The start of the match was delayed for an hour after the toss because of rain; but once play got underway Chris Gayle continued his marauding form in IPL-5 as his attacking burst at the top of the order laid the foundation for RCB’s total of 173 for 3, which was always going to be a daunting score to chase on the slowish pitch at Subrata Roy Sahara Stadium. Gayle took his time in the first couple of overs of the match to play himself in, but went into overdrive in the third over when he hit Upadhyay for two massive sixes. The best was yet to come though from Gayle’s bat and the hapless bowler to suffer at the hands of the attacking southpaw was Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who was hit for four sixes in the sixth over. The last of those maximums brought up Gayle’s half-century from only 24 balls - the fastest of IPL-5; and his blitzkerig helped RCB score 66 runs in the Powerplay overs to leave Warriors’ captain Steven Smith clueless and worried. Gayle’s brutal hitting in that Kumar over brought back memories of April 17 when he had hit five consecutive sixes off Rohit Sharma in RCB’s thrilling last-ball win against Warriors at Bangalore. Man-of-the-Match Gayle scored 57 from 31 balls (3x4, 6x6) before Angelo Mathews had him well caught by Manish Pandey at the long-on boundary to give the Warriors a much needed breakthrough. RCB captain Virat Kohli (9) had yet another failure in IPL-5 when his leading edge flew straight to Smith at short cover with Rahul Sharma being the successful bowler. At this stage, RCB was 97 for 2 after 12

BCB issues stern warning to cricketers The Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) has taken note of the unbecoming attitude of several cricketers who leave the County to fulfill contractual duties overseas without the courtesy of informing the BCB. In a statement issued by the Board, declares that every player in Berbice, especially the seniors are fully aware of the requirements that their current clubs and the BCB must be informed through an official letter from the

intended overseas club. The Board has noted that several Berbice players including national and International players have failed to do so and as such the Board would be unable to contact them for any match or programme they intend to run. The release went on further to state that some of the culpable players show ‘total disrespect’ to clubs that have invested heavily in their development, showing scant

regards for the investment the clubs would have made in their development. “The Berbice Cricket Board would like to inform the guilty players that with immediate effect that any player who leaves Guyana apart from West Indies duties must inform the Board. Failure to inform both Club and the Board will result in disciplinary action against such faulting players who will also not be considered for Berbice Selection.”

overs and the Warriors had done well to pull back the scoring rate; but 30 runs came across the 14th and 15th overs as Tillakaratne Dilshan and Saurabh Tiwary took the attack to the Warriors’ bowlers. Dilshan, who made a 44ball 53, was content rotating the strike when Gayle was on the rampage, but gradually started playing his shots as well before he was run out by Alfonso Thomas on his follow through in the 18th over. Tiwary (36* from 30 balls) was surprisingly promoted ahead of AB de Villiers, and he struggled to time the ball for most of his innings. De Villiers finished RCB’s innings in style with a six over long-on off Alfonso Thomas. Mathews (3-0-14-1) was the most economical of the Warriors’ bowlers; but Kumar and Thomas conceded 86 runs in the eight overs they bowled between themselves. The Warriors needed a good start in their chase of 174, but that wasn’t to be as Zaheer Khan dismissed Mishra and Pandey in the first over to peg the hosts on the back foot. And, when Michael Clarke (13 from 10 balls) continued to struggle in IPL-5, became Vinay Kumar’s first victim of the match, the Warriors were struggling at 22 for 3 inside four overs; and the chase was all but over at this stage. Robin Uthappa and Anustup Majumdar gave the Warriors a glimmer of hope with their well-paced partnership of 50 runs in 4.4 overs for the fourth wicket, with the former looking set to play his first big knock of the tournament. But, that wily old Sri Lankan spinner Muttiah Muralitharan had Uthappa (38 from 23 balls) stumped by de Villiers in the first over after the strategic time out, and this was the start of the end for the Warriors. Mathews was expected to play an important hand, but his stay in the middle was shortlived before he was stumped off KP Appanna’s bowling. Smith (24* from 25 balls) failed to accelerate the scoring, and with wickets continuing to fall at the other end, it was a ‘mini-victory’ of sorts for the Warriors that they weren’t bowled out inside 20 overs. Muralitharan with figures of 4-0-16-2 showed yet again the reason batsmen the world over are mighty relieved that he has retired from international cricket. Zaheer (2-21) and Vinay Kumar (3-32) were also impressive as RCB continued their winning ways. Scores: 20 overs Royal Challengers Bangalore 173 for 3 (Gayle 57, Dilshan 53) beat Pune Warriors 138 for 9 (Vinay 3-32, Zaheer 2-21, Murali 2-16) by 35 runs.

Serena Williams sweeps past Maria Sharapova at Madrid Open Serena Williams made light of the seven ranking places separating her and Maria Sharapova as she eased past the world number two 6-3 61 at the Madrid Open. The American is in to the semi-finals for only the second time in five singles events this year and will play either Sam Stosur or Lucie Hradecka. World number one Victoria Azarenka made progress in less assured style, beating Li Na 3-6 6-3 6-3 after a shaky start. Fifth seed Tomas Berdych saw off Fernando Verdasco in the men’s draw. Berdych swatted aside Rafael Nadal’s conqueror 6-1 6-2 in just 66 minutes and will play Juan Martin del Potro in the last four after the Argentine beat Alexandr Dolgopolov 6-3 6-4. Top seed and defending champion Novak Djokovic and world number three Roger Federer will attempt to follow Del Potro in to the semi-finals later on Friday in matches against Janko Tipsarevic and David Ferrer respectively. Williams, whose last

Serena Williams

Grand Slam title was at Wimbledon in 2010, had won her previous six contests with Sharapova and opened in suitably confident style. Six aces and two early breaks of serve carried the first set her way and, although

Sharapova briefly stemmed the tide by breaking back for 2-2 in the second, the Russian could not not convert resistance into a full blown rebellion. Sharapova slipped behind again soon after with a sixth double fault and could not rein in her opponent for a second time. Azarenka, who lost to Sharapova in the final in Stuttgart in her last tournament, came under pressure from Li at the start and the end of their match, but, after building a 4-0 lead in the decider, saw off the Chinese’s late charge to progress. The Belarusian joined Nadal and Djokovic in criticising the blue clay surface in Madrid. “I’m not a fan of this court, that’s for sure,” she added. “But I don’t want to sit here and complain about it. Nothing is going to change this year. We can talk after the tournament about maybe possible changes or something.” Azarenka will meet world number three Agnieszka Radwanska , the fourth seed, who beat American qualifier Varvara Lepchenko 6-4 6-4.

Justin Gatlin beats Asafa Powell in Diamond League in Doha World indoor champion Justin Gatlin staked his claim as a contender for the Olympic 100m with victory in Doha’s Diamond League meeting in 9.87 seconds. The American overhauled Asafa Powell in the final 30m to edge out the Jamaican by one hundredth of a second. Olympic champion Usain Bolt opened his 2012 campaign with a run of 9.82 seconds in Kingston on 5 May. Gatlin, who won 100m gold at Athens 2004, is eligible for London 2012 after serving a four-year doping ban. His victory at the Qatar Sports Club marked a return to the venue where he set a new world record in 2006, a mark subsequently wiped from the record books after testing positive for testosterone. The 30-year-old made his comeback to athletics in 2010 and won 60m gold ahead of Great Britain’s Dwain Chambers at the Indoor World Championships in Istanbul in March. Whether Gatlin gets a chance to compete for a medal at the Olympic Stadium in August is dependent on

his performance in the United States trials in Portland which begin on 21 June. Regardless of his presence, a cast of credible pretenders to Bolt’s crown have made their case. With Commonwealth champion Lerone Clarke finishing third behind Gatlin and Powell in 9.99 seconds, six men have run under 10 seconds already this season. American Walter Dix, who won bronze in both the 100m and 200m behind Bolt at the Beijing Games, won the event’s 200m in 20.02 seconds. In a field packed with quality, American three-time world champion Allyson Felix trumped the challenge of her Jamaican rivals to win the women’s 100m in 10.91 seconds. Veronica Campbell-Brown and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, Olympic champions at 200m and 100m respectively, finished second and third. Elsewhere in the season’s opening elite-level Diamond League meeting, Great Britain’s Perri ShakesDrayton came third in the women’s 400m hurdles in a time of 55.25 seconds, behind

Jamaica’s Olympic champion Melaine Walker in 54.63. Her compatriot Martyn Rooney finished fourth in the men’s 400m in 44.99 seconds, eight tenths of a second off Olympic champion Lashawn Merritt. Greg Rutherford, who has 2012’s world-leading jump at 8.35m, came a disappointing fourth in the men’s long jump with a leap of 7.98m behind Russia’s Aleksandr Menkov. But fellow Briton Andrew Osagie ran a personal best of one minute, 44.64 seconds as he finished third in the men’s 800m behind Kenyan winner David Rudisha, while Molly Beckwith racked up a season’s best of 1:59.51 as she came home sixth in the women’s 800m. Kate Dennison was fourth in the pole vault after clearing 4.50m, while Vivian Cheruiyot beat Meseret Defar in the women’s 3,000m. 2012’s top men’s 100m times ·Usain Bolt (Jam): 9.82 seconds ·Justin Gatlin (US): 9.87 ·Asafa Powell (Jam): 9.88 ·Yohan Blake (Jam): 9.90 ·Rakieem Salaam (US): 9.98 ·Lerone Clarke (Jam): 9.99
