PARLACI UN PO’ DI TE: COME E QUANDO È NATA LA TUA PASSIONE PER LA PESCA CON LA MOSCA ?

Per vanità femminile non dirò la mia età, ma diciamo che sono abbastanza giovane per avere ancora qualche anno di pesca davanti a me prima di metter su famiglia. Sono della Repubblica Ceca; mio nonno e mia nonna erano pescatori a mosca, quindi quando sono nata era già deciso che avrei continuato la tradizione familiare. Non ricordo esattamente quando ho iniziato a pescare, ma ho un vecchio filmato in cui, a 4 anni, sono in piedi su una roccia in mezzo al fiume e sto pescando con la mosca con una trota allamata. Ho sempre usato tutte le tecniche, ma la pesca con la mosca artificiale è sempre stata la mia preferita. Ricordo la mia prima trota fario presa a mosca. Avrò avuto meno di 4 anni e pescavo con mio padre che mi aveva fatto un bastoncino di nocciole di legno con un pezzo di tippet, mi fece scegliere una mosca dalla sua scatola portamosche e ovviamente scelsi la più strana – una grossa cavalletta verde e… sì, catturai una bella trota brown proprio accanto alla riva. Ma la storia della cavalletta non è finita. Prima di partire per il mio primo viaggio di pesca in Australia (nel 2014), per trascorrere lì un paio di mesi e imparare da una famosa guida locale, Jono Shales, mio padre mi diede quella cavalletta come portafortuna! Mi disse che l’aveva conservata e che la portava sempre con sé quando andava a pesca. Da quel momento la mia fortunata cavalletta ha viaggiato con me in più di 20 paesi e mi piace credere che finora mi abbia portato fortuna.

TELL US SOMETHING ABOUT YOU: HOW AND WHEN DID YOUR PASSION FOR FLYFISHING START?

As a lady I will not share my age but I’m still young enough to have some good fishing year ahead before I plan to settle down with a family. I’m from the Czech Republic and come from a fly fishing family. My granddad and my grandma were anglers so when I was born it was already decided that I would continue the tradition. I don’t exactly remember when I started fishing, but there is a serious old video where I’m standing on a rock in the middle of a river landing a trout, I was about 4 years old. I used all techniques, but fly fishing has always been my favourite. I remember my first brown trout on the fly. I was under 4 years old and I was fishing with my dad; he gave me a wooden hazelnut stick with a piece of tippet and let me choose a fly from his fly box. Of course I chose the most weirdest - a big green grasshopper and yes, I got a nice brown trout just right next to the bank. But the story of my grasshopper goes on. When I was leaving on my first fly fishing trip to Australia (in 2014) to spend there a couple of months and learn from a local famous guide, Jono Shales, my dad gave me that same grasshopper to wish me luck !

SEI GIOVANE, MA HAI GIÀ VIAGGIATO MOLTO, QUAL È IL TUO POSTO PREFERITO?

Ho avuto la fortuna di visitare più di 20 paesi negli ultimi 3 anni e ogni posto ha qualcosa di speciale. Ma se devo fare una classifica, i primi cinque sono la Bolivia, la Bassa California, l'Islanda, la Croazia e la Repubblica Ceca. Se devo sceglierne uno però, scelgo la Bolivia. La Bolivia è stata sicuramente il viaggio della vita, non solo perché pescare lì è pazzesco, ma anche vedere la giungla è un’esperienza che ti lascia il segno.

CHE TIPO DI PESCE TI PIACE PESCARE?

Preferisco pescare a vista: con mosca secca, popper ecc. aggressivi GT o diffidenti permit oppure grosse trote brown nei fiumi dell'Isola del Sud (Nuova Zelanda) oppure dorado nelle acque cristalline dell'Amazzonia bolivaniana.

COME VEDI IL FUTURO DELLE DONNE CHE PESCANO?

Da qualche parte ho letto che il flyfishing femminile è lo

sport in più rapida crescita e sono d'accordo. Adesso sempre più donne amano passare il loro tempo sui fiumi a pescare, il che è un buon segno. Inoltre grandi aziende iniziano ad investire sulle donne per le attività di pesca a mosca, e questo è fantastico. Io sono stata molto fortunata perché ho sponsor che mi hanno dato piena fiducia.

LAVORI COME GUIDA A TEMPO PIENO PER LA PESCA A MOSCA. È MOLTO INSOLITO CHE LE GUIDE DI PESCA A MOSCA SIANO GIOVANI DONNE, COME REAGISCONO I CLIENTI? SI FIDANO DI TE? SONO EDUCATI? HAI QUALCHE EPISODIO DA RACCONTARCI?

Devo dire che essere donna, certe volte, è anche meglio. Sicuramente ci sono stati alcuni clienti, in particolare signori britannici anziani, che all'inizio erano un po’ sospettosi, ma poi si sono fidati. Ricordo un cliente che aveva circa 80 anni e aveva pescato salmoni per tutta la vita e non era mai stato guidato da una donna . Era uno dei miei primi clienti e

YOU HAVE TRAVELLED A LOT, WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE TO FISH?

I have been lucky enough to visit more than 20 countries in the past 3 years and each place has something special. Among my favourite are Bolivia, Baja California, Iceland, Croatia and the Czech Republic. But If I hade to pick just one, I would choose Bolivia. Bolivia is definitely the trip of a lifetime, not only because fishing is insane but being in the jungle is a unique experience.

WHAT KIND OF FISH DO YOU LIKE FISHING?

I like fishing with dry fly, poppers etc. looking for aggressive GT or permit, spotting massive brown trout in rivers of South Island (New Zealand) or golden dorado in crystal clear waters of Bolivian Amazon.

HOW DO YOU SEE THE FUTURE FOR WOMEN IN FLY FISHING?

I have read somewhere that women fly fishing is the fastest growing sport and I agree. You can now see a lot of women that spend more and more time on the water, which is definitively positive and they have my full support! Big companies are starting to invest in women fly fishing, which is great. I am very lucky to have the full trust of my sponsors and of the people I work with.

YOU WORK AS A FULL TIME FLY FISHING GUIDE. IT IS VERY UNUSUAL FOR A YOUNG WOMAN, HOW DO CLIENTS REACT? DO THEY TRUST YOU? ARE THEY

quando l'ho incontrato davanti al lodge e gli ho detto "Sarò la sua nuova guida". Mi ha guardato con disprezzo e ha detto solo "hmmm" poi mi ha chiesto "da quanto tempo lavori qui?" "Una settimana" "Pensi di conoscere il fiume abbastanza bene?" “Sì, certo” ho risposto. Dopo un primo turno, quando l'ho introdotto alla pesca a ninfa francese sul fiume Bugda, ha cominciato a divertirsi e nei giorni successivi ha catturato bellissimi salmoni. Il giorno della partenza, prima di lasciare il lodge, mi disse "Tornerò Katka e voglio che mi guidi di nuovo tu!” È stata una grande soddisfazione e da quel momento ho trovato la fiducia in me stessa come guida. E sì, l’anno dopo è tornato!

CHE COS'È CHE TI PIACE DI QUESTO MESTIERE?

E’ sempre stato il mio sogno ed il motivo per cui sono partita per l’ Australia, volevo imparare il lavoro di guida da Jono Shales. Quando, nel 2018, facevo la guida al mio primo cliente, Mr. Simon, e lo vidi catturare il primo salmone, mi resi conto che quello era il lavoro per cui ero nata. Persino la pesca con la mosca non mi procura tanta felicità quanto vedere un cliente felice che cattura il pesce dei suoi sogni e impara qualcosa di nuovo! Ho un gruppo davvero fantastico di persone che lavorano con me al Lodge e, di sicuro essere ogni giorno in contatto con la natura rende questo lavoro ancora più speciale.

POLITE? DO YOU HAVE GOOD STORIES TO TELL US?

I have to say that most of the time it is alright. Sometimes very good. Of course there are some clients, especially old English gentlemen, who are a bit suspicious at the beginning but then I manage to win their trust. I remember a gentleman in his 80s who had been fishing for salmon all his life and had never been guided by a lady. He was one of my first clients and when I met him in front of the lodge and told him „I will be your new guide„, he looked at me and said „ hmmm“. His first question was : „ How long have you been working here?“ „ one week“ „Do you think you know that river good enough?“ Absolutely” I said. I showed him the French nymphing and he had a really good time on river Bugda. The following days he caught really nice salmon and when he left the lodge, he told me „I am going to come back, Katka and I want you to guide me again!” That was really special for me and probably after that moment I found my self-confidence. And, he came back the following year!

WHAT IS IT ABOUT GUIDING THAT MAKES YOU WANT TO DO IT?

At the beginning it was just a dream, and one of the main reasons why I travelled to Australia to learn from the local guide Jono Shales. In 2018, when my first client Simon landed his first salmon, I realized that being a guide was the job I was born for.

Fly fishing itself does not bring me as much happiness as seeing a happy client landing his dream fish with a smile and learning something new! We have a really great group of people working with me at the Lodge and for sure being in contact with nature all day makes my job even more special.
