Cosmoledo

In March 2021, after being conditioned by the pandemic for over a year, a unique and unexpected opportunity arose in Seychelles, Atoll of COSMOLEDO, the Giant Trevally fly fishing capital of the world. We prepared everything as best we could and took care of the details concerning the equipment as well as the many documents. We arrived in Mahe and stayed there for a couple of hours, before moving to Alphonse Island. Then we proceeded to the Astove Atoll and finally reached Cosmoledo. Our week focused mainly on GT fishing, though that spot offered a lot of opportunities to catch Milkfish, Triggerfish, Bonefish, Indo-Pacific Permit, Grouper, Snapper, Sharks, Napoleon Wrasse and others.

Cosmoledo’s ecosystem is amazing. Nature is still the queen of this atoll, with millions of sea turtles and sea birds everywhere, breath-taking landscapes, wonderful fishing spots, and a lot of sea life. The accommodation was an EcoCamp that fitted very well into the surrounding environment. The main building had a big table for meals and a relaxation area. It was a huge “tent” supported by big poles, and was situated directly on the beach. The cuisine was excellent, and the service was top level, thanks to the well-trained and extremely professional staff. The rooms were new independent Eco-Ponds, equipped with air-conditioning, bathrooms and outdoor showers. You fished by wading when the tide allowed it (there are about two meters for excursions between the high and low tides), or from the boat, but always with an expert guide. Based on the spot and the tide, you can fish different species here. In one week we caught exactly 100 GTs, some of which were impressive in size: 115, 118, 130 cm… With such fish, the tightness of the equipment and you as well, are put to the test. Looking at big GTs attacking a fly is an explosion of power, as they jump mouth-opened almost entirely out of the water, due to the heat of the attack. Fishing for Milkfish and Triggerfish is very productive too. Everything is done at sight.

It makes a difference to use top quality equipment suitable for these predators: reliable reels that are precise even under strong pressure, powerful rods, tails with reinforced core, nylon strands and fluorocarbon for leaders, crafted knots and finally flies. It is fundamental to have a good selection of flies built with specific details on hooks suitable for tackling these fish.

Marzo 2021, dopo oltre un anno condizionato dalla pandemia, arriva un’occasione unica e insperata: Seychelles, Atollo di COSMOLEDO, la capitale mondiale della pesca a mosca ai Giant Trevally. Prepariamo tutto, al meglio, curando i dettagli dell’attrezzatura e tantissimi documenti. Arriviamo a Mahe, sosta di un paio d’ore e subito ci trasferiamo ad Alphonse Island, poi sull’atollo di Astove e, infine, arriviamo a Cosmoledo. La nostra settimana sarà focalizzata principalmente sulla pesca dei GT, ma questo spot offre molteplici possibilità di pesca; Milkfish, Triggerfish, Bonefish, Permit Indo-pacifico, Cernie, Snapper, Squali, Napoleon Wrasse e altro.

L’ecosistema di Cosmoledo è pazzesco, la natura è ancora la sovrana di questo atollo, milioni di tartarughe di mare e di uccelli marini sparsi ovunque, paesaggi da togliere il fiato, spot di pesca favolosi e un mare ricchissimo di vita.

L’alloggio è un Eco-Camp che si inserisce molto bene nell’ambiente circostante, la struttura principale ha un grande tavolo dove consumare i pasti e un’area relax. Si tratta di una grande “tenda” sorretta da grossi pali di legno situata direttamente sulla spiaggia. La cucina è ottima, il servizio di grande livello, grazie ad

uno staff molto preparato ed estremamente professionale. Gli alloggi sono nuovi EcoPond indipendenti, forniti di aria condizionata, bagno e doccia all’aperto.

La pesca si effettua in wading quando la marea lo consente (ci sono circa 2 metri di escursione tra la bassa e l’alta marea), oppure dalla barca, sempre con una guida esperta. In base allo spot e alla marea si pescano le diverse specie qui presenti. Nella settimana sono stati catturati molti GT, un centinaio per l’esattezza, alcuni dei quali di taglia impressionante 115, 118, 130 cm… Con pesci del genere si mette a dura prova la tenuta dell’attrezzatura e anche di se stessi. Vedere i grossi GT attaccare la mosca è un esplosione di potenza, dove, a bocca spalancata, capita che saltino quasi interamente fuori dall’acqua per la foga dell’attacco. Anche la pesca di Milkfish eTriggerfish è molto produttiva. Il tutto sempre a vista.

Un’attrezzatura di ottima qualità, adatta a questi predatori fa la differenza: mulinelli affidabili e precisi anche sotto forte pressione, canne potenti, code con anima rinforzata, fili di nylon e fluorocarbon per i terminali, nodi fatti ad arte ed infine le mosche. Avere una buona selezione di mosche costruite con dettagli specifici su ami adatti ad affrontare questi pesci è fondamentale.
