My story as a fisherman and fly tyer began in 1982. At that time I was still fishing in the traditional way and fly fishing was a dream. Then after reading some magazines, I was fascinated by fly fishing and the tying of artificial flies and so decided to abandon everything and devote myself exclusively to this discipline. I still remember with immense nostalgia the hours spent studying the only books available in Italy at the time, above all those by Piero Lumini.

During my 40 years as a fly tyer I have really used all the natural and synthetic materials known and unknown in the world of fly fishing.

I love building with natural materials like hackles, cdc, natural hair, and deer hair, my favorite. I like tying any type of fly, from full dress to fishing flies, dry flies and nymphs, as well as sea flies. In general I like challenges. La mia storia come pescatore e costruttore di mosche artificiali inizia nel 1982, allora pescavo ancora in maniera tradizionale e la pesca a mosca era un sogno. Poi leggendo alcune riviste sono rimasto affascinato da questa disciplina ed ho deciso di abbandonare tutto e dedicarmi esclusivamente alla pesca a mosca ed alla costruzione di mosche artificiali. Ricordo ancora con immensa nostalgia le ore passate a studiare gli unici libri disponibili in Italia all’epoca, su tutti quelli di Piero Lumini.

Nel corso dei miei 40 anni da costruttore ho usato veramente tutti i materiali conosciuti e non nel mondo della pesca a mosca, naturali e sintetici.

Amo costruire con materiali naturali come hackles, cdc, peli naturali, il mio preferito è il pelo di cervo.

Mi piace fare qualunque tipo di mosca, dalle full dress alle mosche da pesca, secche e ninfe, così come amo le mosche da mare. In generale mi piacciono le sfide, amo particolarmente realizzare “mosche” insolite, solo per il piacere di mostrarle nelle varie fiere di appassionati.

Il mercato propone sempre nuovi materiali. Fra i materiali naturali direi che una delle novità più interessanti è il pelo di camoscio, molto simile al cervo ma con caratteristiche sensibilmente differenti. Anche il Nyat hair nel mondo degli streamers ha dimostrato una certa versatilità. Tra la miriade di sintetici non vedo grandi novità, a parte le varie codine e zampe usate per la costruzione di grossi streamers, e la presenza ormai massiccia di resine UV di ogni genere.

Ho conosciuto tantissimi costruttori in tutti questi anni e altri li ho studiati e ammirati attraverso i loro libri. Difficile scegliere i più innovativi, anche perché ognuno è specializzato principalmente in un tipo di mosche. Per le mosche d’acqua dolce direi Hans Van Klinken, che ha segnato un’ epoca nel mondo delle secche con le sue Klinkhammer, e Francesco Palù, un costruttore italiano assolutamente innovativo che con le sue creazioni ha contribuito a divulgare la pesca a mosca in Italia. Poi Bob Clouser, i cui Clouser Minnow hanno preso pesci in qualsiasi luogo del nostro pianeta. Aggiungo Barry Ord Clarke che attraverso i suoi libri e le sue magnifiche immagini ha segnato un traguardo nella costruzione di mosche particolarmente efficaci. Mi fermo qui, ma potrei showing them in the various fairs for enthusiasts.

The market always offers new materials. I would say that chamois hair is one of the most interesting innovations among the natural materials. It is very similar to deer hair, but with significantly different characteristics. Nyat hair has also shown a certain versatility in the world of streamers. Among the myriad of synthetic materials, I don't see any great news, apart from the various tails and legs used for the construction of large streamers, and the now massive presence of UV resins of all kinds.

I have known many builders over the years, and have studied and admired others through their books. It is difficult to choose the most innovative ones, also because each one is mainly specialized in one type of fly. For freshwater flies, I would say Hans Van Klinken marked an era in the world of dry flies with his Klinkhammers. Francesco Palù’s creations, an absolutely innovative Italian fly tyer, have helped to popularize fly fishing in Italy. Then follows Bob Clouser, whose Clouser Minnows have caught fish anywhere on our planet. I add Barry Ord Clarke, who through his books and magnificent images has marked a milestone in the tying of particularly effective flies. The world of construction is wonderful and fascinating when you see young people approaching this discipline with such interest. Any advice? Listen and study everyone, try to understand what can be more valid for you. Don't focus on a single builder or a single fishing method (dry, nymph, streamers, etc.). Be open to all possible experiences. It is the only way to understand the different characteristics of the flies and the various techniques.

Then you can choose what you prefer and love the most.

I love fishing in the company of few close friends, I hate confusion on rivers, lakes and at sea, which, unfortunately, is normal today in Italy, and perhaps also in Europe. In the last 20 years I have dedicated myself a lot to sea fishing, and if I really have to choose a favorite place, I’ll choose the sea, where the fish are real, wild, a real challenge.

I would like to have a secret place, unfortunately it's only in my dreams... anyway, if I had it, I would never tell you!!!

Il mondo della costruzione è meraviglioso, affascinante, ed è bellissimo vedere i giovani che si avvicinano a questa disciplina con tanto interesse. Un consiglio? Ascoltate e studiate tutti, cercate di capire cosa può essere più valido per voi, non sposate un solo costruttore o un solo metodo di pesca (secca, ninfa, streamers ecc). Apritevi a tutte le esperienze possibili, è il solo modo per capire le diverse caratteristiche delle mosche e delle varie tecniche. Potrete scegliere così ciò che più preferite e amate.

Amo pescare in compagnia di pochi amici affiatati, detesto la confusione sui fiumi, sui laghi e in mare. E purtroppo oggi è la normalità in Italia, e forse anche in Europa. Negli ultimi 20 anni mi sono dedicato molto alla pesca in mare, e se proprio devo scegliere un posto preferito scelgo il mare, dove i pesci sono veri, selvaggi, una vera sfida. Mi piacerebbe avere un posto segreto, purtroppo è solo nei miei sogni... comunque se l’avessi non ve lo direi mai!!!
