Proactive Ponderings about Common Challenges

What to do about the Sixty Two by Shellene Van der Beke

According to the January 18th report An Economy For the 1% published by Oxfam, 53 male and 9 female uber rich folk, are as wealthy as half of the world’s population.

62 dudes and dudettes…an amount of people that will fit into a mid-sized school bus.

How about them apples? This gap between the few, over the top “haves” and the many “have nots” is a wealth distribution absurdity. I could go on an on about how seriously crazy this is, but I think it is best that I move quickly on to the goal of this monthly article: solutions. (Although I must admit to gritting my teeth with restraint.)

Solutions: Perspective is King:

Challenge: What can “little ol’ us” do about the fact that, as Bill Maher said in his “Beat the Rich With a Stick” 2011 article: Between the years 1980 and 2005, 80% of all new income generated in this country went to the richest 1% ? (For those folk out there who have a bit more than the average Joe and got to where you are through hard work, talent and even a bit of good luck, kudos. This topic is not pointing a finger at you.)

 No Money, No Sunny?: Although money does make many things “go ‘round”, one cannot deny that no amount of moola can buy things like common sense, respect, integrity, trust, manners, character and love…the list is long.  The Mammoth Moxy of the Middle: the middle class generates 39 trillion dollars in wealth annually. The truth is, what we in the middle say (with our voices and votes) has great power, especially when the majority of us get on the same page. What we buy defines and drives the marketplace. Historically, us “folk in the middle” have acted as an agent of stability and prosperity. We have been at the heart of political movements and new consumption trends.

“What happens in technology or morality or culture or any other aspect of human life is that ordinary people interacting with each other is the source of most innovation, most change in the world.” Author Matt Riddley

Safe Communities/Haida Gwaii

Helpful crime prevention tips brought to you by your local RCMP

Family Safety

Help your children identify threats to their safety. The best protection a child carries is knowledge. Make sure that they know that:     

They can tell you anything. Their body belongs to them. It’s OK to say no. They must never talk to strangers that approach them. If they are scared, they should run and get help.

Asylum

by Shellene Van der Beke Lately I have been reading about people disagreeing with hosting refugees in Canada…and some folk get downright nasty about it. Nasty, in my opinion, is rarely, if ever called for…and this is making me a bit feisty. I admit I was questioning my own beliefs after watching a Ted Talks presentation whose main message that was that “Immigration does not work”. The fellow speaking made a very good point that many immigrants are “handpicked” based on their well-developed skills and intelligence…so that they are sure to be productive contributors in wherever they call their new home. He then went on to say that the “best of the best” should stay in their own countries so they can help their people at home. I see a small amount of truth in this line of thought. I also wholeheartedly agree that we need to take care of our own first…but at the expense of taking care of people other than our own? Who thinks up this stuff? How’s about we care for many people and prioritize this over the trillions of tax dollars that go to things like mistargeted government expenditures whose recipients should not be entitled to one darn penny of our hard-earned dollars? As Will Ferrell said in a recent comedy hit, “Most of us are anchor babies.” To say no to helping people in need outside of our borders is to say no to pretty much every person in Canada, indigenous people included. All humans since the dawn of time have been migratory by nature. According to Amnesty International, just 2.6% of the Syrian refugee population have been offered resettlement places globally since the start of the Syria crisis. So, if we here on Haida Gwaii can raise enough funds to host just two families who have been shamefully misplaced due to the absurdities of war...I say yes to this kind and benevolent act of humanity. “Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries. Without them humanity cannot survive.” Dalai Lama

Taking Charge of Stress Donna Duffy, RN, BSN, MPH

Are you feeling stressed out? Or maybe you hear your friends and family say “I’m so stressed, I don’t know whether I’m coming or going!” In my nursing work, I often see the consequences of stress on health. The term “stress” was coined back in the 1930’s. Nowadays almost everyone is familiar with stress and its consequences. If it’s not managed, too much stress can lead to major health problems. So what exactly is stress? For our purposes, it’s the response of the body to a “stressor”. A stressor is anything that challenges you physically or psychologically, forcing you to make some kind of adjustment. Stressors can be physical—illness or injury for example. Stressors can also be psychological. A fearful thought, for example, will cause the same stress response as an actual physical threat. In the stress response, the brain signals the adrenal glands to release the hormone adrenaline into the blood. This triggers the release of another hormone, cortisol. These two hormones together produce a number of changes in the body. Heart rate speeds up, pupils dilate, digestion slows, blood vessels supplying blood to muscles dilate while other blood vessels constrict, muscle tension increases, blood pressure rises and so does blood sugar. This cascade of physical responses is geared to increase the chance of surviving a physical threat (you’ve no doubt heard of the “fight or flight” response). Stressors are not always negative or unpleasant. The excitement of winning the lottery for example can cause the same release of adrenaline and cortisol. For some, the adrenaline rush can actually become addictive, leading some to engage in high-risk activities like race car driving or skydiving. Stress is not always a bad thing. A little bit of stress can actually be good, acting as a stimulant or motivating us to achieve. On the other hand, too much unmanaged stress over time can overwhelm your system, producing fatigue, irritability, depression, anxiety and physical symptoms like headaches. It can also bring on sleep issues, obesity, a compromised immune system, high blood pressure, heart disease and other health problems. If unmanaged stress is the problem, how do we go about managing our stress so that it doesn’t do us harm? Here are some tips that might help you to get a handle on managing your stress: Become aware of your stress response - A good place to start is to look at how you react to stressors. There are many ways that stress presents itself. What are your signs and symptoms? Do you get butterflies in your stomach? Sweaty palms? Do you act differently? It’s important to know yourself well enough to be able to identify when you are stressed. Reduce your stressors wherever you can - Jot down a list of all the things in your daily life that make you feel stressed. Separate them into those that could be avoided and those that are unavoidable. Make a plan to get rid of those you can (sometimes just learning to say “no” is the answer). Next, examine your response to thoughts and events that trigger you. You actually have more power over how you react than you might think. Becoming aware of how you react to triggers is the first step. Meditation aimed at mindfulness can help you develop the skills to take charge of how you react to stressors. This works by limiting the stress response at its source. Build effective stress management strategies - Identify your current stress management strategies. Are they healthy or unhealthy? Unhealthy strategies (like stress-eating or substance abuse) might provide temporary relief but they actually make the burden of stress worse down the road. Cultivate healthy stress management strategies that can work for you long-term. Anything that lowers your adrenaline levels will lower your stress. Physical activity is very effective for lowering adrenaline levels. So is connecting with others. How is your social support system? Enlist support from friends and family. Breathing exercises also lower adrenaline levels and can be done anywhere. Focus your attention on your breathing, taking deep, slow breaths. Just a minute or two spent on focused breathing will calm your system. At especially troubling times, help from your family doctor, a nurse or mental health professional may be called for. Take care of you - Eat right and avoid sugary foods (sugar magnifies stress). Get enough sleep, exercise, and allow time for relaxation. The healthier you are, the more resilient your body is to handling stress.

The One Room Schoolhouse by Heather Ramsay Mr. Ross, Mr. Carmichael and Mrs. Elliott remember going to class in the old schoolhouse that is now a thrift shop. The Thrift Shop can be found behind the Royal Canadian Legion [the old United Church]. The first classes in Queen Charlotte were held in Moore’s Pool Hall starting in September 1909 until a proper school was built later that year. A Mrs. Butler substituted for a time, but Mr. Cochrane was the first teacher hired. He soon quit to look after his more lucrative store. Finding teachers was a challenge for the small community, as was finding pupils. Mr. Ross remembers being loaned out several times over his school years to the different one-room schoolhouses in the small communities up the coast to Tlell to make up the nine students necessary for a government subsidized teacher. “Otherwise parents had to dig up enough to pay the teachers,” he said. Mr. Carmichael and his siblings would see fish jumping in the Inlet on their way to school and the teacher would insist they be identified as a part of the day’s lesson. The building (top photo) and an addition were used for classes up to the 1950’s when a new two-room school was built on the grounds of the present-day school [west along Oceanview Drive].

Taking Care of Our Feathered Friends

On our property in Port Clements, birds are top shelf. We have several bird feeders and a stack of pallets around 20 feet tall and three times as long that act as a perfect shelter and play zone for many creatures of the wild. My Husband Ben faithfully spreads out mixes of bird seed, chicken scratch and mixed nuts two to three times per day. (We only have one child in our family and he has fur…and we consider the birds to be family as well!) Plump and happy Juncos make up the

We receive periodical visits from a murder of Crows and the odd Raven will pop by to investigate what is going on. Last Summer, at least a dozen or so Pine Grosbeaks camped out for a few days in one of our Mountain Ash trees. They seemed to get a bit drunk on the feast, many with berry mash all over their beaks! (Not feathered, but worth mentioning, we also host a few, very tame and entertaining squirrels and at night, from one to three raccoons slink around munching on the day’s bird-feast leftovers.)

“Haida Gwaii has the largest migratory bird population in the world, many of which are rare.” - Leila Riddall majority of our bird population and they stay year round. The odd Pine Siskin appears in the winter and Blue Jays come in the Spring and stay until the Fall. Robins appear in the Spring and sit on the peaks of our shed like sentinels and we see the odd Varied Thrush, Winter Wren and Chickadee if we are lucky. A hearty flock of Eurasian Collared-Doves appeared a couple of years ago and have never left. There are fourteen of them now.

My family and I love the birds so much I have stopped washing the outside of the windows so as to decrease the incidence of kamikaze, flying window collisions. Unfortunately, wounded birds do appear rather frequently. Our resident Sharp-shinned hawk has figured out that if he makes a pass at the deck where the bird feeders are, he just might scare the little feather-creatures enough so that one or two will fly directly into our front window,

knocking them out cold and making for an easy meal. We also had what we thought was a single pigeon join the dove flock one day…and he had a terrible wound on one leg which had him hopping on the good leg to get around. We wondered what we could do to help him…so I called Leila Riddall, one of Haida Gwaii’s volunteer bird recovery/ rehabilitation champions. The bird retrieve/ release torch was passed onto Leila by Margo Hearne and Peter Hamel who took on this invaluable service for nearly 30 years! Here is what Leila advises to do if you find a wounded bird: • Establish if the bird truly needs help. Baby and courting birds often act a little loopy but they are not actually hurt. If it can fly, leave it be. • If it is a larger bird, it is best to give Leila a call right away @ 250-6267576 and she will advise you further. • If you have established that the bird truly does needs help, put on a pair of gloves and gently cover them with a blanket or sheet as that will calm it down. • Put them into a box that has holes in it with a towel in the bottom and place the lid on the box to darken it. • Keep the box in a quiet, dark and warm place. Heat the box with either a heating pad (set on low) placed on half of the bottom of the box or a wrap a bag or jar with hot water in it and place it in the box with the bird. • Wash your hands. • After a couple of hours, take the box (away from windows) to an open area near the woods or brush and open the lid. If it flies away, you have done a good job. If not, call Leila at the number above and she will advise you further. A wounded bird that needs special care is attended to by an alarmingly large team of private citizens and local businesses, all volunteering their time and services to this worthy cause. Here on Haida Gwaii, Leila is

the key person who is kept very, very busy managing the care for not only wounded birds (small and large) but other creatures as well like muskrats, otter and deer, to name a few. Because funds and facilities are in short supply on Haida Gwaii, wounded animals must often be shipped to other facilities such as the Prince Rupert Wildlife Rehab Shelter, the Ladner chapter of O.W.L. (for wounded predatory birds) or Critter Care located in Langley. The Prince Rupert Wildlife Rehab Shelter, run for the past 27 years by Gunther and Nancy Golina, helped over 800 domestic and wild animals in 2015 and has an 80% release rate for the animals they take on. At one time they helped recover a Frigatebird (tropical seabird) that took refuge on the BC Ferries Queen of Prince Rupert and

after 3 days at their shelter, Hawkair helped to ship the recovered seabird to Vancouver where it was then flown to its final destination: the Tijuana River Delta! Inland Air, Pacific Coastal Air and Hawkair all offer free cargo services for wounded birds heading to one of the above-mentioned facilities. Virginia McRae, Inland Air Office Manager, stated that they have, in the last 8 months, transported at least 2 Eagles and 3 Ravens from Haida Gwaii. “We do not charge for the transfer on our flights,” says McRae “we definitely help out all we can by transporting injured birds and animals from the outlying areas and getting them to the wildlife shelter in Prince Rupert.” Leila Riddall said that on average, only around 20% of the wounded birds tend to be saved. As this number startled me, I asked her if there is anything we humans can do to reduce the number of wounded animals and she answered with a resounding “Yes”. “The biggest, unnatural cause of bird deaths is electrocution. 80% of these injuries could be avoided if people stopped dumping fish and/or deer carcasses high up on the beach or off to the side of the road, close to power lines.” Easy solution: dump animal waste out of town, away from power lines and below the tide mark on the beach. By doing so, countless of our cherished

feathered friends can be saved. Birds are living treasures on Haida Gwaii - loved by so many of us who live here and revered by countless tourists who come from around the world to see them.

If you have a wounded animal that needs care, please call Leila Riddall at 250-626-7576 or email her at quikstix@hotmail.ca. Donations to help care for wounded birds on Haida Gwaii are deeply appreciated and can be sent to the Delkatla Wildlife Sanctuary, attention Leila Riddall at PO Box 804, Masset, BC V0T 1M0

GEORGIA BENNETT, RAVEN’S TAIL WEAVER OF OLD MASSETT - a Love Haida Gwaii success story “It’s very rare that I don’t have something being created on my loom and if I’m not weaving I’m spinning my own warp or surfing the net for good wool deals, I guess I can say that weaving is now a major part of my life. Mind you I always make time for family. My weaving success story begins with my weaving teachers Master Weaver Evelyn Vanderhoop and Master Weaver William White. For their priceless weaving knowledge they are willing to share I never forget to acknowledge them. Haawa, haawa, haawa for teaching me, I’m forever grateful and forever learning something new in my weaving career. Love Haida Gwaii set me up with a professional photoshoot and a professional writer for my business profile. The one-time $50 fee covered all of the costs and I now have a business page on the Love Haida Gwaii website. I am able to use all of the beautiful pictures for promoting my business. I believe using this service has increased my little business tremendously.” Georgia was a professional nail technician when she first tried her hand at the ancient art of raven’s tail weaving in 2004 under the instruction of notable Haida weaver Evelyn Vanderhoop. Her first piece, a pouch, became a gift for her sister and her first apron, a gift for her husband. A busy career caused her to set aside the hobby for a few years, but in 2009 she took up the art again, devoting more time and attention to honing her skills and soon found herself getting requests from people to create items for them. Georgia began making traditional dance regalia and head dresses, eventually adding many other items to her repertoire, including belts, pouches, aprons, dance robes and more.

This “Oil Head” symbol was used in 2004 when Islanders made their views known to the Priddle Panel at a demonstration held in Daajing Giids. The panel travelled the coast conducting a public review on lifting a 30-year moratorium on offshore oil and gas exploration.

Running out of coffin nails submitted by Haida Laas/Graham Richard

On January 13, the Supreme Court of Canada ruled that Enbridge’s proposed Northern Gateway Pipeline project must undergo a provincial environmental assessment. Additionally, the Gitga’at and other First Nations along the proposed route must be properly consulted. Citing a desire to eliminate redundancies BC entered into an ‘equivalency agreement’ with the federal government, signing over its responsibility to undertake an environmental assessment to the National Energy Board, the body assigned to conduct federal environmental reviews. However, the Supreme Court of Canada found that BC’s environmental decisionmaking duty is enshrined in provincial constitutional law. While BC can agree to eliminate the redundancy of undertaking a provincial environmental assessment, it cannot surrender its duty to issue its own environmental approval of a pipeline project. The court also found that BC failed to properly consult with the Gitga’at Nation. The court recognized that the environmental assessment agreement between BC and the

NEB and the pipeline’s impacts on Gitga’at rights and title are separate concerns. BC must consult meaningfully with First Nations, in accordance with the Haida Nation v. British Columbia and Weyerhaeuser decision (TFL 39 case). In order to fulfill it’s obligation to consult the Gitga’at, BC would have needed to terminate the ‘equivalency agreement’ with the NEB. Until proper consultation and consideration is complete BC cannot make a decision to issue environmental approval for the proposed Northern Gateway Pipeline project. Provincial environmental approval is central to the proposed pipeline’s construction and without it Enbridge cannot proceed. Furthermore, while Enbridge received two federal certificates approving construction of a condensate pipeline, oil pipeline, and marine terminal in 2014, these certificates are set to expire on December 31, 2016. In addition by July 1, 2016 Enbridge must show it has signed contracts with clients and suppliers to purchase 60 percent of Northern Gateway’s oil supply and provide 60 percent of the condensate it requires. As of February 2015

Enbridge has secured none of these contracts, due in part to ongoing legal challenges. Unless Enbridge fulfills these requirements and begins building the pipeline its federally issued certificates of approval will expire on December 31, 2016. The Gitga’at and Coastal First Nations worked together to bring this constitutional challenge forward. This ruling will affect Kinder Morgan’s proposed pipeline expansion project, which will also require meaningful consultation with First Nations and a provincial environmental assessment certificate.

Going to university without leaving home Living on Haida Gwaii can definitely pose a challenge when it comes to higher education, especially for islanders who already have jobs here and can’t afford to move away and become full-time students. Residents of larger centres can take advantage of evening classes or part-time studies to further their education, but that’s not usually an option for islanders.

For rural Graham Island resident Jennifer Pigeon, the solution to this dilemma has been online courses through Athabasca University, which specializes in online learning and offers a huge variety of university courses over the internet. Jennifer started her educational journey in 2012, with a year-long NorthWest Community College course in accounting. That sparked a desire to learn more, and she is now working towards a university certificate in accounting from Athabasca, one course at a time.

Jennifer explains that each course takes about six months to complete. She does her studies in the time left between running her own bookkeeping business and activities like working in her large garden. And while online courses are undoubtedly convenient, there are some challenges. Asking questions can involve lengthy email exchanges, and our slow internet is also a hurdle. “It’s definitely challenging,” she says. “But I get to do my own schedule. I work when I want, and I can garden when I want.”

Jennifer Pigeon is working towards a university degree with help from Gwaii Trust.

DID YOU KNOW? The Gwaii Trust places a high priority on assisting all Haida Gwaii residents in their educational quests. Our education grants are intended to help islanders smooth over some of the significant hurdles they face accessing post-secondary education, trades education, and other education opportunities. We can provide up to $3,000 a year to help with tuition and course materials. Check out our website or talk to our staff for full details about these grants. 14

Although she is only part-way through the certificate program, Jennifer has already learned new skills that she is using to help her bookkeeping clients, most of which are local small businesses and non-profits.

Gwaii Trust education grants have helped pay for her tuition and books, and Jennifer says this has made going back to school much easier. These grants are available to all islanders pursuing post-secondary education, whether on-island or off. “I really appreciate it,” she says. “It’s so great to have the opportunity to learn. It’s kind of crazy when you’re almost 40, but it’s very exciting too.”

GRANTS CAN BE USED FOR SHORT COURSES TOO! Queen Charlotte Secondary School student Liam Racz received a continuing education grant to attend the Gulf Islands Film and Television School, where he took part in a one-week course in 3D Computer Animation this past summer. Liam writes: “I thank you and the board for this amazing opportunity. The 3D Computer Animation course reaffirmed my plans to enroll in a postsecondary animation program once I graduate. I had never had the opportunity to collaborate on a creative project before and now know this is something I would enjoy doing for the rest of my life. The instructors, interns and other students were incredibly supportive throughout the film making process, and provided excellent advice on how to choose a post-secondary school. I’ve made friendships that have continued since leaving the Gulf Islands and have been asked by the school to intern there next year. Once again, thank you for this experience that would not have been possible without the financial assistance from the Gwaii Trust!”

All life is one. Before humans there was peace. Yes, animals, both leaders and followers did and still do kill their prey, but for sustenance, not war. A great leader motivates, not with force but by being wise – going with the flow of life, knowing when to be still, when to move ahead, and when to withdraw. The peaceful leader knows the integrity of life is to heal through “knowing the way of all people.” “The way of all people” is oneness and equality - values that do not cause division and separation. This knowledge and wisdom begins first with knowing what

A wise leader knows from experience and foresight how essential it is for all people to be given equal opportunities to live a quality life. In addition, it is simple and it is true: paying special attention to the care of our elders and youth is a key foundation to a better quality of life for all. Each and every one of us must (now more than ever) hold all of our leaders accountable, to reach out with compassion and offer our elders platforms to speak and teach and our young people opportunities to become great as well.

Horoscopes for Feb. 15th to Mar. 15, 2016 Aries (March 20-April 19) I know that there is yearning in you to press forward, no matter what, with passion and decisiveness. And this makes for a fulfilled Aries. But right now is the time to stand still. Stand still long enough to receive the vision that is attempting to download. You must be quiet enough and brave enough to hear the message that is whispered in your ear, and then act on it. But not before hearing it. Key Words: Visionary, Listen, Peace

Taurus (April 19-May 20) Dear Taurus, what goals lie just below the surface that you have not acknowledged yet in your life? How can you retain your authenticity as well as respect from your community? These are the key questions worth answering in your life now. Think about what you have left to attain, then meditate on how you will manifest it in your life. Key Words: Aspirations, Desire, Goals Gemini (May 20-June 21) It’s time to harvest your crops, dear Gemini, but what have you planted? If you have stayed aware, tended to your hopes and dreams and fed them what they needed, then now is the time to reap what you have sowed. If not, then it’s the time to determine what goals you hope to achieve. You still have time to contemplate your future and listen carefully to what the next step is, then take it. Key Words: Results, Gather, Fruition Cancer (June 21-July 22) Shine the spotlight on yourself, dear Cancer. Probably not what the sensitive Cancer wants to hear, but there it is. Is there a way to shine brightly, perhaps in your career? To use creativity and inspiration by deeply viewing the world, then presenting your findings outwardly? However challenging this is, life is calling you to do it. You can pop back into your shell another time. Today, make yourself presentable, and open the door and walk out into the sun. Key Words: Shine, Shimmer, Sparkle Leo (July 22-Aug. 23) Money issues may be playing a part in your life for the next few weeks. Your own as well as other people’s money. This does not indicate lack, only that resources are presenting themselves in your life. And with this comes a dose of confidence challenges. You are so capable of dealing with whatever comes your way, dear Leo, as long as you believe that you are. Don’t let a lack of selfconfidence rain on your parade. Key Words: Believe, Strive, Hope

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sep. 22) Even though your tendency is to put your head down and plow that field, dear Virgo, these next few weeks will find you in the company of others. In order to accomplish the things on your list, you will need help, be willing to socialize and hang out with new and old friends who can and will help you. But in order for this to happen, you need to take enough time to play with others. Key Words: Connect, Communicate, Relate

Libra (Sep. 22-Oct. 23) What is it on this planet that inspires you; that makes you feel truly alive? I ask you, dear Libra, to look within and answer these questions. Answer them through meditation, through hiking in the forest, through playing with your kids. Find your answers in the little things that make you smile. Then work hard to put them permanently in your everyday life. Key Words: Passion, Inspiration, Creativity Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 22) This time in your life, sensitive Scorpio, finds you inspired and creative, but with a deeper purpose to life. In the next few weeks, you might notice yourself wanting to hole up in your house. This is an appropriate response for you right now. No need to make grandstands out in the public eye. Best to take up some crafting project that keeps you at the kitchen table for now. Key Words: Homey, Rooted, Submerge Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 22) Dear Sagittarius, do you feel you have been hiding in your shell for the past several weeks? This has been appropriate in order to process all the information that has been coming your way and I will suggest that you may do this for a few more days. But I recommend that after that you take a shower, put on some nice clothes and step outside into the world. Process your mega information download from outside the comfyness of home. Meet friends, take a class or go for a walk in the fresh air. Key Words: Learn, Enroll, Prepare Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 20) What are the simple truths in your life? We need food, shelter and water of course. But we also need to build up our confidence, self-reliance and determination to make our dreams come true. For the next several weeks, dear Capricorn, I want you to try and make your life simple and true for you. Release chaos and overbooking yourself and allow the simple truths to seep in. Key Words: Straightforward, Effortless, Light Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 19) The dilemma you have, dear Aquarius, is how to manage what you want with what your family wants for you. In the upcoming weeks it will be important to practice a little bit of selfishness. How can you walk forward in your life with purpose, assertiveness and passion? This is the question of the moment and one that needs to be answered with action, not just thoughts and words. Key Words: Lights, Camera, Action! Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20) Do the hard work now that is required in your career in order to evolve in your chosen .field. You have the ability to discipline yourself and stay focused through what looks like a tough time but could actually be quite a rewarding time. Feel your intuition, initiative and drive and decide that you are worth the effort it takes to make your feelings known. Key Words: Dynamic, Ambition, Vigor

Ride to the big smoke. Hi folks, I’m looking to find a ride to Vancouver. I’m hoping to get there around the 2nd or 3rd of March. Will pitch in for gas- unfortunately can’t help with the driving as I don’t have a driver’s license. If anyone is headed that way around that time let me know. Thanks Call Frances Bateham at (250) 673-1759 or email Haidagwaiiseasalts@gmail. com

HAIDA GWAII LOCAL FOODS PROJECT The United Nations and Food – Soil and Pulses Some of you may already be aware that as we leave 2015 behind, we are also leaving behind the International Year of Soils as determined by the United Nations (UN). Announced on December 5, 2014 coinciding with the first ever World Soil Day, the UN stated that healthy “lands and soils are of paramount importance to [humankind]. As a cornerstone of sustainable ecosystems, they play an essential role in the production of food and the availability of water and energy. Yet, despite their critical role in sustaining life on our planet, they are one of the most undervalued and overlooked natural resources”. Declaring the International Year of Soils provided soils with a voice it otherwise would not have had. Next time you walk through the forest, consider the soil our deer walk on and our cedars grow from and our berries, carrots, and lettuce are nourished

from. Respect the soil that gives all this and therefore us - life. You may now be asking – Jeepers, I wonder what the UN has determined 2016 to be the year of? Following a year which celebrates soil, the UN has declared 2016 to be the International Year of Pulses. Pulses include lentils, beans, dry peas, and chick peas. Pulses are a protein rich food source produced with less water and other resources in comparison to animal based protein. For more information on the International Year of Pulses, the history of pulses, and recipe ideas, go to: http://www.pulses.org/ - Submitted article by Ruth Wheadon “Almost all beans are difficult to grow here (due to problems with mildew and lack of heat) other than fava/broad beans, which grow well.” - Avid gardener Dominic Legault of Masset
