Annual Giving Appeal 2023/24
I am delighted to share with you our Annual Giving Appeal 2023/24. The third in its series, I have been most encouraged by the increasing financial support that we have received from the Haileybury community year-on-year, which ensures that we can realise our Appeal ambitions.
This year we are offering a range of projects across academic, co-curricular and outreach activity; projects selected to ensure that we can continue to provide an outstanding education for our pupils and further contribute to the global society to which we belong. It is only through secured philanthropic support that we will be able to carry out these projects.
Ours is a history that is uniquely built on service and charity and we want to ensure that this culture remains a core part of our ethos.
I would like to thank you in advance for any support towards this year’s Annual Giving Appeal.

“Science and research are essential for us in an educational process, giving a taste for science as early as possible has to be a priority for a school like Haileybury. Especially in a world where the challenges to be met are major. This is why we have decided to make a donation to the new SciTech project, and we are happy to see this magnificent building which will welcome the future generation of scientists!”

Outdoor Education Facility – £150,000
Building on an area adjacent to Hailey Wood, we have plans to develop dedicated facilities for outdoor education and adventure training. Outdoor Education is already a core component of our co-curricular programme which currently engages with over 450 pupils each week through Combined Cadet Forces, Coghill & Adventure skills programmes, Duke of Edinburgh and climbing, but with the increasing recognition of the huge benefits of outdoor education we are looking to expand our provision.
We are looking for support to enable us to offer a fuller range of activities to engage and develop our young people and maximise the rewards they can gain from this important area of school life and their time outdoors.
With your support we will look to install the following:
• Areas for outdoor cooking and teaching
• Assault course equipment
• Camp fire with wooden seating
It is intended that this project will be sympathetic to the natural environment with a low carbon footprint and a sustainable ethos and will be a facility that can be shared with other local school communities through an outreach programme.

Observatory – £30,000
Haileybury already offers an Astrophysics pathway to Removes (Year 9) pupils, allowing them to learn and study astrophysical and physics concepts beyond the traditional IGCSE physics specification. There is also a practical element within the course whereby pupils learn how to use telescopes, track stars and take images of them. There are also plans to extend the Astrophysics course into Middles (Year 10) and to offer an Astronomy club for all pupils.
Thanks to generous support received through the Annual Giving Appeal 2022/23 we were able to purchase a new telescope for the School.
We must now seek financial support for an Observatory for our new telescope, which will offer pupils a unique facility, and the opportunity to observe events in space and natural phenomena.

Sustainability wishlist – £135,000
We are committed to an extensive initiative to become more sustainable. Our vision is for the School to be carbon-neutral by 2030 and energy self-sufficient, to reduce the School’s impact on the environment. Through the curriculum and co-curricular activities we want to ensure the pupils are equipped with skills relevant for the modern world.
Whilst we are committing resources to our sustainability strategy, we need to secure further support to provide a range of equipment to the Haileybury community as soon as possible, to ensure that we can meet our vision of being carbon neutral:
• LED astro lights for the two main astros
The replacement of our current light system, with new LED lights, which will reduce our energy consumption considerably, with initial projections showing payback will be in as little as three years. £60,000
• Composter
A composter will help us to convert all of the School’s organic waste into a nutrient-rich fertiliser to be reused to improve soil around the site. £50,000
• Recycling bin system for the whole school
A recycling bin system to be made available across the School site, to ensure that we are recycling all waste to the best of our ability, and in line with United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
£25,000
Sports wishlist – £14,650
Sport is central to Haileybury life, enhancing confidence and resilience through teamwork and leadership as well as via physical, technical and psychological stimulus. We have a range of equipment that we would like to purchase to further enhance our offer to pupils, ensuring every opportunity for improvement:
• Indoor Electronic Scoreboard
A digital scoreboard to be used for our Netball fixtures. £2,650
• Benches
We are looking to secure funding to be able to provide a range of benches across the School site to provide parents and visitors somewhere to sit to watch sporting events. Benches can be dedicated in your name or in honour of a loved one. £900 each
• DSLR Camera
To enable more photography of match play and thus double the amount of photographic representation of sport across all our activities. £3,000

Lighting desk – £10,000
Drama is a vibrant and energetic subject at Haileybury. We offer a range of opportunities for all pupils, both on and behind the stage, to ignite a lifelong appreciation for theatre.
Lighting is hugely important for theatre, having a major influence on the mood of a scene and the audience experience. No matter the type of performance, lighting in theatre is a needed pillar that drives performance from an idea to a reality. Currently, our lighting desk is no longer fit for purpose and we need to secure support to be able to purchase a new desk.
A new desk will greatly enhance both our training and standard of production here at Haileybury.

Hearts & Wings Holidays – £25,000
Haileybury is delighted to be running this project for its second year. We will welcome 20 local children and young people with learning disabilities for our Hearts & Wings Holidays, a memorable break for young people, whilst providing crucial respite for parents and carers.
Working in partnership with Green Frog Holidays our guests will be housed in Batten House and supported by 30 volunteers, predominantly from Haileybury, who provide one-to-one care 24 hours a day.
The support that we receive ensures that we can provide a range of exciting activities and days out, and carry out the volunteer training needed to be able to deliver a high quality respite care scheme.

Haileybury Youth Trust –£25,000
Haileybury Youth Trust trains young Ugandans and refugees in climate-friendly construction and builds schools, homes and water tanks. Working with some of Africa’s most marginalised people, HYT transforms communities and livelihoods.
Haileybury Youth Trust began life in 1890 in the East End of London, where the British Prime Minister and Old Haileyburyian, Clement Attlee, was once the Trust’s manager. Since 2006, the Trust has worked in Uganda, developing environmentally sustainable building projects and vocational training.
To support our work this year we must raise £25,000 which will:
• Bring clean water to schools in some of Africa’s largest refugee settlements
• Give refugees and Ugandans building skills, employment and an income

Leaving a Legacy
Costing you nothing today, a legacy is one of the most impactful ways you can support the School’s long term ambitions. Even a small contribution has the potential to make a huge difference, ensuring Haileybury can continue to thrive long into the future. Legacies can be unrestricted (to be put towards the area of greatest need) or directed towards a specific area that is meaningful to you.
All legacy pledgers automatically become members of The Haileybury Oak Circle, our way of recognising your special commitment to the School. Visit the website to find out more about Legacy giving and In Memory options: haileybury.com/legacies
