Annual Giving Appeal 2022

Page 1

We are an ambitious school, striving to provide the most progressive, supportive and holistic education for our pupils. Service forms a core element of Haileybury’s ethos and our pupils leave the School recognising their responsibilities and the positive effect they can have on their communities, local or global.

The last few years have highlighted the need for additional support both in terms of updating and future-proofing our campus and also widening access to Haileybury. The impact that donations can have is transformational. Not only does it affect the lives of current pupils and those of generations to come but also the wider community.

Haileybury is an exceptional school, driven by a desire to provide a world-class education and a need to support the community. I invite you to read more about our ambitions and to make a donation to our Annual Giving Appeal today.

Your support can make a difference.

Our impact

In the academic year 2021–22, we received donations from across the Haileybury community, including current and former parents, council members and alumni. We received generous support which enabled us to:

• Upgrade the Nunn astroturf via the Hockey Pitch Upgrade Appeal

• Provide bursary awards to selected pupils

• Create a world-class SciTech centre

Donations to Haileybury have been vital in realising ambitious projects and this year is no different. We have a range of projects that are in need of support, and hope that you will be a part of Haileybury’s philanthropic story as we strive to build the best school we can be.

“Over the last few years, hockey at Haileybury has developed into one of the School’s strongest sports. My donation to the Hockey Pitch Upgrade Appeal was not only a chance to ensure that Haileybury’s hockey teams had the facilities worthy of their successes but also a way of supporting the hockey teams and players in the wider community who make use of Haileybury’s pitches and facilities.”

The SciTech Project

The SciTech Project will place Haileybury at the forefront of teaching and learning. It will provide us with the best school-based science facility in the country, doubling the size of our current building and providing the foundation for a pioneering curriculum that will challenge our pupils even further. This includes Haileybury’s ground-breaking Stan-X study which allows pupils to work alongside scientists at Stanford University and the University of Oxford in finding cures for diseases such as pancreatic cancer and diabetes. In order to continue such a progressive curriculum, we need to provide equipment that is worthy of such ambitions, furnishing the building with state-of-the art educational tools. The equipment and kits outlined here will support the way we teach because with the right facilities and equipment, rather than learning science, pupils will become scientists themselves.

• Ten electronics, programming & coding remote learning kits at a cost of £63 each

• Five DIY autonomous cars at a cost of £95 each

• Ten Internet of Things exploration kits at a cost £109 each

• Five electronics & programming classroom kits at a cost of £230 each

• Five robotic arms at a cost of £230 each

• An electrophoresis lightbox at a cost of £680

• A digital rocker to fix larval notochord and brains in formalin at a cost of £855

• A 3D printer at a cost of £2,000

• A fruit fly incubator at a cost of £4,000

• A telescope at a cost of £5,000

Buy a SciTech room

The new centre will be the home to design and technology, chemistry, physics, biology and computational science. The building and rooms themselves will demonstrate in practice, energy efficiency and sustainability, subjects that will themselves be taught to pupils as part of our curriculum. There will be 20 new teaching spaces, all interconnected and equipped with the latest communications technology, creating spaces appropriate for learning within the digital age. We have a range of rooms available to name including:

•Virtual reality lab

•Robotics lab

•Computational Science classrooms

•Biology labs

Haileybury Turnford and the wider community

As part of our commitment to ensuring that access to the studies of science and technology is widened, we are excited at the opportunities that the SciTech Project will afford to members of our wider community. We look forward to being able to share the technology and the facilities with pupils from outside of Haileybury, including those from local primary schools and Haileybury Turnford. Equally, we look forward to providing opportunities for groups of pupils from the wider community to contribute to inquiry projects that are run out of the new centre.

A new organ for Haileybury

For more information, please contact Susie Martin on 01992 706 230 or s.martin@ haileybury.com

The Music department at Haileybury has grown substantially over the last few years and now requires further development in order to establish Haileybury as a centre of musical excellence. The chapel organ plays an integral part in the life of music at the School. A recent audit of the current organ in the Chapel identified several challenges for the development of the School’s choral programme.

A new, additional organ at the front of the Chapel will allow us to develop a vastly extended choral repertoire of music by providing an accompaniment to a variety of different choirs and solo voices as well as serving as a continuo in chamber ensembles. The compact design and optimal resources of the new organ will make an ideal teaching instrument to instruct a new generation of young organ students.

We will also undertake a broad education outreach programme and the organ will sit at the heart of it. It will include engagement with current pupils, preparatory and primary school groups, local Church communities and musical organisations, and our international partners.

Legacies

Other ways to support

A legacy gift is unique in that it costs nothing during one’s lifetime but carries a lasting impact felt by many in the future. Even a small contribution has the potential to make a big difference, helping to ensure the School can continue to thrive and provide the best possible opportunities for our pupils. All legacy pledgers automatically become members of the Haileybury Oak Circle, a way to recognise and celebrate the special commitment of those who choose to leave a legacy to the School.

Mentoring Programme

Mentoring is a powerful tool that can help to build connections, build confidence and navigate difficult decisions. Haileybury offers a range of unique opportunities for pupils and alumni to connect and learn from one another as they progress through their education and careers. If you would like to become involved in Haileybury’s Mentoring Programme, further information can be found on the Support Us section of our website.

This summer, Haileybury will be hosting a week-long residential holiday at the School for local children and young people with learning disabilities. Through a partnership with the charity Green Frog Holidays, we will work to recruit volunteers and train them to create an enriching holiday timetable. Around 20 guests will make use of Haileybury’s boarding facilities and will be supported by 30 young volunteers, predominantly from Haileybury, who will give one-to-one care 24 hours a day.

We need to raise £25,000 to provide a safe, fun holiday for children and young people with learning disabilities and to give parents, carers and siblings respite from full-time caring. Donations will go towards training volunteers and the provision of specialist equipment including a pop-up sensory room.
