Leaving a Legacy
Plant a seed for the next generation
“A legacy gift is unique ... it carries a lasting impact felt by many long into the future.”
Haileybury has benefitted from a long history of philanthropic support. Since its earliest days, donations have provided a vital source of funds for the School’s continued development.
A legacy gift is unique in that it costs nothing during one’s lifetime but carries a lasting impact felt by many long into the future.
Even a small contribution has the potential to make a big difference, helping to ensure the School can continue to thrive and provide the best possible opportunities for our pupils.
Thank you for considering including Haileybury in your will.

Frank Russell Dore
Hailey 1904
One of the School’s greatest benefactors, Frank Russell Dore, MBE was instrumental in enabling some of the School’s early developments. The impact of his support can still be felt today, especially by Lower School pupils who continue to enjoy the benefits of their very own unique building, which bears his name.
As a pupil, Russell was House Cricket Captain and a keen member of the OTC (now CCF). After Haileybury, he served in the army during both World Wars, rising to the rank of Major. He was awarded an MBE in 1946 after forging a successful career in the City.
In addition to funding two full fees Scholarships for pupils who would not have otherwise been able to attend Haileybury, he also funded the building of a new House for Day pupils, enabling more local families to send their children to the School.
To this day, Russell Dore House is known for its strong focus on pastoral care, ‘a home from home’ prioritising a safe and comfortable environment for young pupils to settle into when they arrive at Haileybury.
“My bursary was completely lifechanging for me. During my school years I had a very unstable and challenging home situation. The bursary, and boarding, allowed me to avoid the brunt of that while having a fantastic time at Haileybury and achieving results that I am very proud of.”

“I have chosen to support Haileybury as an ongoing institution with roots in the past and aspirations for the future.”

I think it is a matter of pride that having been a pupil at Haileybury I have associated myself all my adult life with the ethos imparted by the School. I have also tacitly supported its traditions of service in its history.
Some of my most pertinent memories include the visit of HM Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh in Autumn 1962 to mark the School centenary, having tea at the Kipling table being practically adjacent to high table where the Master and guests were seated, then 600 of us dashing out in the dark to cheer the departing entourage departing down the avenue.
I have never swerved from my belief that I could never have met a better group of people, the Master, staff and contemporary schoolmates, through whom to get a proper formal education, and the teaching was excellent.
I was pretty successful at work right from the start, spending almost 40 years working for an American chemical company, and resolved quite early that, intending no children, I could do something to support others at Haileybury.

I learnt a lot of life lessons at Haileybury. Having such an amazing campus and facilities was incredible but the big thing for me was Peter Davis, Director of Music at the time, undoubtedly the best teacher a pupil could wish for at secondary school. When you have the support and drive from your teachers for you to thrive as much as possible, you can’t really ask for more.
The bursary was the absolute game changer in my life. I think supporting bursary funding is crucial, for kids who may not come from the best of backgrounds, but have a talent or a certain gift. This could give them the opportunity they deserve.
“Without having received the bursary at Haileybury, I wouldn’t have been able to progress musically, and grow the way I did as a person.”
“I am excited to think that I could still continue to shape my legacy even after I have left. That’s the great thing about Haileybury – you are always connected.” Sixth Form pupil

Help us to nurture the next generation of Haileyburians
Leaving a legacy is one of the most impactful ways you can support the School. For Haileybury, legacy gifts go a long way in helping to secure our financial future, ensuring we can continue providing the facilities and programming that inspire and motivate our pupils for generations to come.
Leaving a legacy to Haileybury
You can decide whether you would like your legacy to support the School broadly or go towards a specific purpose or part of the School that is meaningful to you.
Unrestricted
Unrestricted gifts give the School the greatest flexibility to allocate your support carefully to the areas of greatest need. Annual unrestricted support is crucial for the School’s financial health, enabling us to maintain a tradition of excellence by applying the funds flexibly to a variety of needs - both expected and unforeseen.
Specific purpose
You may prefer to direct your legacy towards a specific purpose that is meaningful to you, for example pupil bursaries, a specific House or department, or new equipment or facilities. We welcome the opportunity to discuss your plans with you before you commit them to a will, to ensure we can meet your wishes.
Tax efficient giving
Pledging a legacy to Haileybury is an easy, tax efficient way to play an important role in Haileybury’s current and future success.
Haileybury is a registered charity (Charity number: 310013) and is therefore exempt from Inheritance Tax and Capital Gains Tax. This means that the School pays no tax on gifts of money or property made in your lifetime or after your death. A legacy to Haileybury may also reduce tax payable on your estate.
When making or updating your will we strongly recommend that you consult a solicitor to ensure it is legally valid and accurately reflects your intentions.

The veteran oaks at Haileybury are symbols of the School’s history; originally the oaks marked the boundaries of fields and parishes. Thanks to the careful stewardship of the landowners for over 400 years we can still enjoy their beauty; The Oak Circle will provide support for the present and future of our School with the same care.
