The Scholarship Programme at Haileybury is a fantastic opportunity for those pupils who excel academically or possess exceptional talent and potential in a particular discipline to develop their skills and passions whilst making a powerful contribution to our vibrant and forward looking School.
We understand the importance of treating every scholar as an individual and our scholarship programme is tailored to bring out the best in everyone and ensure they progress and thrive. Scholars have school mentors to ensure their continual development and support throughout their time at Haileybury. They will have regular meetings with staff to set goals, review and make the most of the opportunities on offer.
Our scholars are role models within the School and set an example for others in their conduct and attitude. They play an active role in life at Haileybury, upholding our values and ethos and acting as ambassadors for the School.
Scholarships are typically available for pupils entering at 11+, 13+ and 16+. The assessment dates for entry in September 2024 can be found at the end of this booklet.
I look forward to meeting you and discussing how our scholarship programme can benefit your son or daughter.
Martin Collier MasterAcademic Scholarships
An academic scholar is expected to be a leader; this means regularly attaining high grades but also it means much more than that.
Academic leaders stand out in the classroom by their inquisitive natures, their love of learning, their willingness to embrace challenges and their enthusiasm for sharing their knowledge with their peers. When it comes to work outside the classroom, they regularly go beyond the work set, reading widely and delving into topics of interest beyond the curriculum.
Being an academic scholar doesn’t come with any fixed obligations however, scholars who want to, are very much encouraged to apply to be part of our academic enrichment groups (and being a scholar adds considerable weight to such an application).
In the Lower School these groups focus on trying to develop inquisitive, questioning learners via reading and literature. In the Main School these groups look to broaden pupils’ horizons by covering a range
of topics (across all subjects) beyond the scope of the regular curriculum. By the Sixth Form, many of our pupils will have started to identify subject areas where they want to specialise and so the enrichment groups focus on developing key research skills before supporting pupils to complete a research project (which will typically be externally assessed) in a subject of their choice. We expect excellent feedback from teachers in terms of both attitude to learning and attainment from scholars throughout their time at Haileybury.
Scholarships are typically awarded for the duration of a pupil’s time at Haileybury. However, they are reviewed on an ongoing basis and if a scholar is struggling to maintain the expected standards when it comes to attitude to learning over a period of time they will, in the first instance, be supported and mentored to help them try to rectify this. However, if improvement still isn’t forthcoming, scholarships will on occasion be withdrawn.

APPLICATION PROCESS
At 11+ and 16+ there is no application process for an academic scholarship.
At 13+, there is a different selection process based around a scholarship assessment day at Haileybury. Pupils who have performed well in their 13+ entrance papers will be invited to the assessment day but other pupils are also welcome to put themselves forward for the assessment day if their current school supports their application.

Sports Sports Scholarships
Haileybury has an enviable reputation for sport. The range of opportunities is great and varied with every pupil in the School taking part in sporting activities three times each week as a minimum. For those who have a real appetite for sport (scholars and many other pupils alike), there are many additional opportunities each week beyond the base minimum and it would be entirely possible to incorporate sport into a pupil’s weekly schedule on a daily basis, were it their desire.
age groups made it to the last eight in the country for cricket, along with reaching the national plate semi final for rugby, and winning the southern schools’ league championship for U16 boys’ football.
We have over 20 sports available to our pupils, however, within this broad sporting curriculum we have focus sports and it is predominantly, though not entirely exclusively, in these areas for which scholarships will be considered: cricket, hockey, netball (for girls), rugby (for boys), swimming and football.

All pupils have the chance to represent the School with numerous teams offered at all ages and abilities. Approximately 10% of the pupil’s play representative sport at county, regional/academy level, with several achieving national recognition each year. Our teams enjoy great success at all levels too, for example in the 2022/23 season, the U15C boys’ rugby enjoyed their second consecutive unbeaten season, along with U15B and C girls’ hockey and U18 3rd VII & 5th VII netball doing likewise. Five national titles have been won in 2022/23, (lacrosse, swimming, fencing, rackets) and national finals have been reached in hockey (boys’ and girls’), boys’ skiing and three boys’
Our sport scholars are expected to be leaders on and, equally as crucially, off the pitch. They are invited to join the High Performance Programme (HPP) which offers a unique opportunity to develop one’s sport at a level above what one might term a standard A team session. The aim of the HPP is to enable an individual athlete to achieve his/her own personal sporting ambition which may be to represent their country and follow the career path of a full-time professional athlete and might equally as legitimately be to excel in their own specialism(s) at School 1st team level sport.
The programme incorporates three central aspects: technical, conditioning and enrichment. Each scholar, assuming the invitation to join the HPP is accepted, will enjoy a weekly 1:1 or small group session with their sporting mentor to work on the technical/tactical side of their game; they will also be able to spend time each week with our Head of Athletic Development to condition their body appropriately in our excellent performance gym. The enrichment programme also enables pupils to work with experts in nutrition, sleep, mental preparation for competition and body language, in order to give them the best chance to understand the mindset and approach of a professional athlete. Examples include workshops to cook one’s own naturally sourced protein bars, seminars with experts in the benefit of sleep, and mentors such as Adam Peaty’s coach who met our athletes to offer tips on the mental side of sport.
Graduates from our High Performance Programme have moved into top level sport:
Scarlett Spavin (England U21 Hockey, Durham University),
Zara Everitt (London Pulse Netball Captain, England Roses, Oxford University),
Sam Billings (Kent and England Cricket, Loughborough University),
Jamie George (Saracens, England and British Lions Rugby),
