LOS ANGELES

>>Taking Care of Business Over 350,000 Canadians live and work in Los Angeles, putting it squarely into the top 10 municipalities in terms of a Canadian population. An astonishing number of these people work in the entertainment industry, some as performers but many more behind the scenes as producers, directors, writers and technicians, designers, agents, accountants… They are the professionals, the power players – confident, accomplished, expert in their fields. They know that details can make the difference – whether to a multi-million-dollar movie deal or in the clothes they choose to wear.
¶ Dressed-up or casual, these L.A. Canadian men appreciate the importance of style. They understand the value of a splash of unexpected colour – how it sets a man apart, makes a statement that he is open to new ideas. This season’s sportswear is bright with colour, from shoes to shorts to bombers. Sports jackets also show a playful spectrum, especially where windowpane patterns are concerned. Suit fabrics, on the other hand, are more refined – rich, polished blues and greys that show the lingering influence of classic heritage patterns such as glen checks, houndstooth and pinstripes. Tombolini’s soft-constructed white cotton jacket feels like a piquÊ knit. Details are as dazzling as the fabric: patch pockets and a peak lapel, exaggerated stitching, that single eye-catching button. >>>>> Tombolini jacket, $798; Poggianti shirt, $275; Brax pants, $198.

A seersucker cotton blazer, unlined, unstructured but beautifully tailored, is one of the most comfortable jackets a man can wear on a hot summer’s day. Seersucker itself is a silk or cotton fabric with puckered stripes created during the weaving process, the word derived from the Persian shir o shakar, meaning “milk and sugar.” The British came across it in India in the 18th century, admired its light weight and breathability and began to use it for jackets and suits that felt welcomingly cool in the subcontinental climate.

Bomber jackets are certainly back in fashion this season, front and centre in many sportswear collections. Offered in a variety of colours, some are made of leather, others of nylon – like this unlined grey bomber from Burberry Brit, ideal for spring and summer travel. The original bomber jacket was a sheepskin garment and was designed in England in 1926 by an American former stunt-pilot and pioneer parachutist called Leslie Irvin. Reaching down only to the waist, it offered warmth and protection in the cockpit of a plane without any cumbersome bulk. The iconic leather bomber was developed for the American Air Corps during World War II, entering civilian life soon after when young men discovered how great it looked over a pair of jeans. >>>>>

Colour-blocking 101‌ It can be done – and it can look great if the colours involved are carefully chosen. Adding a shirt with multi-coloured stripes takes the idea to a post-graduate level, varying scale and providing a complementary effect of detail and pattern. >>>>>

Luxury is as much about the way a garment feels as the way it looks. This perforated leather bomber by Ermenegildo Zegna is unlined, extraordinarily lightweight and as supple and soft as butter. >>>>>

Be judicious with colour. These pants need a relatively subdued shirt and shoes to make their point without seeming garish. The result? Very cool.

Such a London look! Burberry invented the trench coat a century ago so it’s entitled to take liberties with the idea. This nylon version is reversible – matte black on one side, glossy and printed with a black-and-grey check on the other. >>>>>

Many of this season’s rich Italian fabrications show the continuing influence of British heritage patterns. This jacket combines a discreet houndstooth check with a bolder windowpane for an exceptionally rich effect.

Colour can be most effective when set against more neutral tones. This red, jerseylined bomber from Moncler stands out all the more boldly against a dark polo and white pants. The powder blue cuff on the pants is a more subtle touch, balanced by a pair of blue loafers. >>>>>

Black and white has a style of its own, particularly where Etro is concerned. This blazer’s cutaway front and dramatic piping recall an Edwardian rowing club blazer, merrily dandified by a paisley shirt and bow tie. >>>>>
