LEAD  WITH A STRONG SUIT There was a time when a man in a suit sought individuality with his shirt, tie and pocket square; today, the suit itself is the main form of self-expression. A great modern suit is never boring. Powerful, authoritative, even sexy, it helps a man stand out from the crowd, taking him from the office to the club or wherever the party happens to be. This season, colours and patterns are brighter and bolder while the trim silhouette shows off the shape of a body that spends time at the gym. Photography Chris Nicholls; Styling Joan Balda; Grooming Laura Szucs, Judy Inc

Munro’s clothing is available ready-to-wear, but its amazing customization program lets you push the boundaries in any direction you choose. Design all the details yourself, from lapels and pockets to buttons and lining, and select from a huge range of fabrics including Loro Piana performance blends. Tailor-made for your body, this suit is so comfortable you could run in it. Munro suit, $1,095; Ordean shirt, $195; Altea tie, $98; TOM FORD sneakers, $1,130. 66 HARRY

Make a statement! BOSS is moving beyond the simple black or navy suit to a place where men like to dress. Exploded white plaid on a royal blue background is certainly an eye-catching fabric – and that, sir, is the whole point. BOSS suit, $1,850, and shirt, $205.

SPRING/SUMMER 2017 67

Following the huge success of its Kei jacket, Canali introduces the Kei suit. Unlined, with natural shoulders, it still offers typical Canali elegance and precision, finding favour with men of all ages and physiques. The mid-blue windowpane fabric is made for spring and summer. This shirt is part of Canali’s high-performance Impeccable line. Canali suit, $2,598, shirt, $298, and tie, $165; Edward Armah pocket square, $95.

68 HARRY

A micro-pin-dot pattern lends visual richness to this pure wool three-piece suit that’s perfect for a night out or a semi-formal event. Versatility is a bonus: take away the vest and wear the suit to work as a two-piece. Z Zegna three-piece suit, $1,495; Eton shirt, $260, and pocket square, $65; Salvatore Ferragamo shoes, $780.

SPRING/SUMMER 2017 69

No pattern this time from BOSS – but what a colour! Instead of navy, a rich royal blue. A blueand-white polka dot shirt and a simple white pocket square are the most clean-cut of accoutrements. BOSS suit, $1,350, and shirt, $175.

70 HARRY

Superb fabrics and impeccable craftsmanship are givens with Zegna; what’s new is a subtle move towards a more contemporary fit and less conventional colours. This half-lined suit in slate blue Trofeo wool is ideal for summertime boardroom meetings. Ermenegildo Zegna suit, $3,495, shirt, $425, and tie, $225.

JACKET UP! What takes pride of place in a man’s wardrobe these days? His collection of jackets. It follows the spectrum from classically tailored blazers to completely unstructured knits. Each one is charmingly versatile (dress it up, dress it down, wear it for work or for play). Together, they give him a formidable range of options, covering virtually every base. Photography Chris Nicholls; Styling Jimmy Moorhouse, Plutino Group; Grooming Laura Szucs, Judy Inc

72 HARRY

Opposite page: With its masterful handtailored detail and stellar fabrication (a Loro Piana wool-silk-linen blend in a light mocha windowpane), this Samuelsohn jacket could easily be paired with dress pants, a dress shirt and a tie. It looks equally right with a more casual approach. Samuelsohn jacket, $1,298; Eton shirt, $270; Mason’s trousers, $285; Edward Armah pocket square, $95; Salvatore Ferragamo shoes, $680. This page: Unlined and soft-tailored in the Italian style, a Baldassari jacket is exceptionally comfortable and easy to wear. The bold colour and pattern are typical of Milanese style – or more precisely of Breda, the town close to Milan where the brand originated. Houses there are painted in bright, eye-catching colours, the inspiration for Baldassari’s palette. Maurizio Baldassari jacket, $895; Gran Sasso polo, $125; Eton pocket square, $65; Hiltl trousers, $265.

SPRING/SUMMER 2017 73

The high-performance pure wool fabric has a silky sheen while a broader weave gives great visual depth. That dusty rose colour and powder blue windowpane might seem challenging but the combination harmonizes beautifully with both blues and greys to make a most handsome summer statement. Ermenegildo Zegna jacket, $2,395, shirt, $450, and trousers, $795.

74 HARRY

“Less is more” is Armani Collezioni’s theme this year – and it shows in a new spectrum of elegant, muted colours like this subtle rose pink. Bamboo in the fabric blend adds a textural richness while the cut has the classic Armani fluidity that flatters any physique. Armani Collezioni jacket, $1,550, shirt, $375, tie, $195, and trousers, $495.

SPRING/SUMMER 2017 75

Call it a “broken suit,” with jacket and trousers sold separately, both in a very lightweight pure cotton. The jacket looks equally sharp with jeans and a knit, or dress it up for a casual summer wedding. Take it off to reveal Etro’s trademark paisley pattern on the lining. Etro jacket, $1,298, and trousers, $350; Eton shirt, $290, and pocket square, $95; Lanvin sneakers, $635.

76 HARRY

Here’s the perfect solution for a guy who wants to look well dressed without jeopardizing his cool, casual aesthetic. An unstructured jacket from John Varvatos can take you from jeans or chinos to something smarter and is perfect for layering with a T-shirt, shirt and light summer scarf. John Varvatos Star USA jacket, $598, and trousers, $258; Salvatore Ferragamo shoes, $660.

SPRING/SUMMER 2017 77

Made in Italy by Circolo, this supremely comfortable garment is a knit rather than a jacket, as easy to wear as a cardigan. Throw it on over a T-shirt or polo and you’re set for a casual evening out. Circolo jacket, $750; John Varvatos Star USA T-shirt, $118; 34 Heritage trousers, $185; Lanvin sneakers, $635; Anderson’s belt, $170.

78 HARRY

Canali’s lightweight Kei jackets are one of the great success stories of recent years, finding the sweet spot of relatively casual tailored clothing. Fabrics blend the stability and performance of wool with the seasonality of linen and the strength and sheen of silk for a most luxurious look and feel. Bolder colours and patterns show the company’s more easygoing, Italian-weekend side. Canali jacket, $1,998, and shirt, $350; Mason’s trousers, $285; Edward Armah pocket square, $95; Anderson’s belt, $170.

SPRING/SUMMER 2017 79

Any man who owns a soft jacket from family-run Italian design house L.B.M. 1911 appreciates its unique virtues. There’s no lining – no construction at all – yet it’s so cleverly made that it keeps its shape and suits almost every body type. This season features many colours and patterns in a summer-weight cottonlinen blend. See them all at harryrosen.com. L.B.M. 1911 jacket, $750; Bugatchi shirt, $195; Brax jeans, $245; Salvatore Ferragamo shoes, $660.

Deloitte’s Toronto office is part of the firm’s national strategy and vision to create more collaborative and productive workplaces. The modern 19-floor space includes a spin studio, a meditation lounge and 18 different types of workstations, allowing employees to match their environment to their daily tasks and encouraging social interaction and workplace flexibility. Ninety percent of seat space has access to daylight and views of the city from the floor-to-ceiling windows that surround the building. The space also features large-scale pieces from notable Canadian artists.

Weightless and as unstructured as a sweater, this jacket from Harris Wharf shows a distinctively English panache in the eye-catching stripes and exaggerated raised seams. Add a touch of the London dandy to your Californian T-shirt and jeans. Harris Wharf jacket, $625; Sol Angeles T-shirt, $85; AG jeans, $345; TOM FORD sneakers, $1,130.

Mr. Ford knows his customer likes to relax on the weekend but he still wants him to look in command. Tailoring details are everything you would expect on this soft woollinen jacket. Dress it down with a henley and off-white linen pants, then smarten it up with a pocket square. TOM FORD jacket, $4,995, knit, $1,595, and trousers, $1,595.

OBJECTS OF DESIRE How to define luxury? Something that is beautifully designed, impeccably made and also built to last. These are the qualities that give us pleasure, and when it comes to menswear, we also look for comfort and practicality. Self-indulgent? Why not…?

It may be the peaked lapel that gives it away. Or the soft shoulder. Or the sleek, uncrumpled finish to the linen-cotton fabric. This is the new evolution of sportswear à la Tom Ford, a jacket and short, pleated trousers that can be worn as a suit or separately, a look that’s simultaneously casual and smartly debonair. TOM FORD jacket, $4,995, trousers, $1,595, knit, $695, and sneakers, $1,130.

A man who wears Loro Piana does so for his own satisfaction, not to make a statement but because he enjoys exquisite raw materials made into truly beautiful things. This season, the design house presents a more relaxed and casual approach – natural fabrics, a slightly slimmer silhouette, an injection of colour with that burgundy jacket. Effortless sophistication. Loro Piana jacket, $2,775, and cardigan, $1,275.

Arthur Barker started his shoemaking company in England in 1880. In 2005, the firm introduced Barker Black, a new line of superb handmade shoes reviving many traditional techniques including wooden shanks and English Goodyear welt construction. The skull-and-crossbones motif appears on the keepers of these loafers, and it’s nailed into the soles and punched into the toe cap of the slip-on monk straps. These shoes are exclusive to Harry Rosen in Canada. (clockwise from top left) Barker Black, $1,095, $1,095, and $1,195.

What does it mean to say Isaia epitomizes Neapolitan tailoring? A softer shoulder, the position of the lapel, and buttons and buttonholes all sewn by hand. Then there’s the balance, the way the cloth falls and moves on the body – a work of art. The fabric is a wool-silk-linen blend, perfect for summer; the pattern speaks for itself. Isaia jacket, $3,500, shirt, $495, and tie, $295; Canali trousers, $325; Loro Piana shoes, $1,000.

Sometimes an ensemble is greater than the sum of its parts – even when the parts are themselves remarkable. Start with the charcoal coat in a water-repellent, high-twist wool-and-silk blend. It has a removable hood and weighs as little as a shirt. Beneath it is an ivory jacket in a silk-cotton fabric with minimal shoulder construction. Then a simple jersey polo, a knit loosely knotted around the waist, some jeans with the hems rolled up (a look Brunello Cucinelli made popular) and a pair of white sneakers. Refreshing, unexpected and very, very cool. Brunello Cucinelli outerwear, $3,575, jacket, $3,195, knit, $895, polo, $525, jeans, $795, and sneakers, $995.

SPRING/SUMMER 2017 87

The trend for wearing a knit, not a shirt, under one’s jacket gives Kiton the perfect excuse to feature an inimitable colour. That ethereal orange polo in mercerized cotton contrasts nicely with the hand-tailored jacket in a cashmere-silk blend. Kiton revels in the minuscule inconsistencies such craftsmanship creates; its fans delight in the fact that every Kiton garment is unique, especially when it has been worn for a while and fits perfectly to its owner’s body. Kiton jacket, $6,995, polo, $895, and trousers, $995; Tod’s shoes, $555.

Tod’s world-famous gommino driver is surely the archetypal summer shoe, in any of its several iterations. Check out the paprika nubuck version with its boat sole in the same colour, or the blue lace-up loafer made of Italian Spotti denim, or the grey nubuck slip-on with the full rubber “spider” sole, all three exclusive to Harry Rosen in Canada. Rounding out the set, that brown loafer is made of perforated leather. (clockwise from top left) Tod’s, $555, $555, $498, and $555.

Opposite page: Tassel loafers were created by movie actor Paul Lukas almost 70 years ago and first produced commercially in 1950. Since then, they have gone in and out of fashion; today they are essential to many a discerning gentleman’s shoe wardrobe. Ferragamo’s suave example shows a dramatic contrast of stone-coloured linen with glossy brown calf leather. Salvatore Ferragamo, $680. This page: More tassel loafers from two great houses. Etro adds broguing to its burnishedleather version; Versace produces a sleek, contemporary model in blue calf leather. (top to bottom) Etro, $1,115; Versace, $798.

A loafer in finely woven brown leather; a double monk strap in the lustrous burnished leather that is a Canali hallmark; a two-toned oxford – all three offer extraordinary value for such exquisite Italian workmanship and materials. See the rest of our exclusive Canali footwear collection online at harryrosen.com. (left to right) Canali, $695, $725, and $695.

The elegantly simple lines of this burnished-calfskin oxford are set off by contrasting textures – an upper with a striated cross-hatch saffiano pattern and a smooth leather toe cap. These shoes were specially commissioned by Harry Rosen from a master shoemaker in Italy’s Marche region. Harry Rosen Made in Italy, $425.

Shoes in two colours, two tones, even two materials… Footwear is stepping into the spotlight this summer. Opposite page, from the top: a most desirable cognac brogue from Barker; a stylish, handburnished brogue from Etro with linen side panels; Santoni plays gloss against matte with polished grey leather and matching grey suede. This page, from the top: Church’s takes broguing back to its practical beginnings with perforations that go right through the leather (excellent ventilation) contrasted with blue canvas; Doucal’s for Harry Rosen takes it one step further with a shoe in three distinct colours of leather. (opposite page, from top) Barker, $625; Etro, $980; Santoni, $1,030. (this page, from top) Church’s, $745; Doucal’s for Harry Rosen, $515.

A smart loafer is the ideal shoe for a jacket and dress pants. This penny loafer from Harry Rosen Made in Italy is made of hand-burnished croc-stamp calf leather. Santoni’s chocolate brown leather loafer is exceptionally flexible and soft because the Goodyear construction is stitched inside-out: very comfortable when you don’t feel like wearing socks. (left to right) Harry Rosen Made in Italy, $435; Santoni, $880.

Soft Italian leather makes for a more sophisticated version of the indoor-outdoor PVC slide sandals young trendsetters enjoy. Don’t be surprised to see men wearing them with white athletic socks in imitation of basketball players who slip them on when they’ve left the court. Fans have noticed, tweeted the images and lo, a new fashion was born. (top to bottom) Tod’s, $555; To Boot New York, $315; Harry Rosen Made in Italy, $275.
