Arthur Barker started his shoemaking company in England in 1880. In 2005, the firm introduced Barker Black, a new line of superb handmade shoes reviving many traditional techniques including wooden shanks and English Goodyear welt construction. The skull-and-crossbones motif appears on the keepers of these loafers, and it’s nailed into the soles and punched into the toe cap of the slip-on monk straps. Sometimes an ensemble is greater than the sum of its parts – even when the parts are themselves remarkable. Start with the charcoal coat in a water-repellent, high-twist wool-and-silk blend.
