SPRING/SUMMER 2018 $5.00

LUX REDUX Photography Chris Nicholls Styling Jimmy Moorhouse, Plutino Group Grooming Laura Szucs, Judy Inc There was a time when luxury was all about dressing up. Today’s man of the world knows that truly luxurious treasures can also be casual. Sophistication and formality are not synonymous. What matters is the quality of the materials and of the workmanship that go into something of lasting value.

68 HARRY

The inimitable Giorgio Armani presents a most

debonair navy cupro jacket, with patch pockets adding a casual touch to dressier peaked lapels. Those bold pants in a sand-andburgundy dĂŠgradĂŠ chevron pattern are made with a lightweight cotton-linen blend. A crisp white shirt completes the look.

Giorgio Armani jacket, $2,150, and trousers, $1,850.

SPRING/SUMMER 2018 69

Ermenegildo Zegna, top to toe‌ The half-lined,

soft-shouldered jacket is casual enough to wear with a polo and a pair of trim, indigo-washed jeans. Zegna’s Tiziano sneakers are unmistakable, with that leather sole curling up over the middle of the white rim.

Ermenegildo Zegna jacket, $1,795, knit, $875, jeans, $595, and sneakers, $995.

Isaia’s half-lined, soft-

shouldered sports jacket illustrates handmade Neapolitan tailoring at its best. The lightweight fabric has a semi-raw, slubby feel, thanks to the silk in the wool, silk and linen blend.

Loro Piana’s soft beige linen cardigan is so

comfortable it’s bound to become a favourite, perfect for travel or a summer weekend by the lake. Wear it over a linen-blend shirt, a light summer scarf and a pair of cotton shorts.

Loro Piana cardigan, $2,300, shirt, $710, and shorts, $600; Tom Ford sunglasses, $440.

Canali’s Kei suit glides

along the ideal meridian between soft and tailored clothing. With its natural shoulders and lightweight construction, the half-lined jacket has a contemporary Neapolitan silhouette. It can easily be worn as a sports jacket, especially when made in a fabric like this lively blue-checked blend of wool, linen and silk. Functional, stylishly leather-tipped suspenders are the sartorial finishing touch.

Canali suit, $2,298, shirt, $285, and tie, $180; Trafalgar suspenders, $85.

SPRING/SUMMER 2018 73

This look is quintessential Brunello Cucinelli, layering a T-shirt, a very lightweight cardigan, a clean-cut sports jacket in a linen blend, and a camelcoloured, enzyme-washed cotton denim jacket. With its sharp side-entry pockets, this jacket is the sort of garment that just gets better with age.

Brunello Cucinelli denim jacket, $2,095, sports jacket, $3,475, knit $725, T-shirt, $425, and pants, $845.

74 HARRY

Brunello Cucinelli irts with a utilitarian look,

layering a lightly quilted yellow nylon vest over a classic button-down oxford shirt and navy cargo pants. On top, the quarter-lined grey jacket is made with peached nylon – soft to the touch and also water-resistant. Navy pebblegrained leather sneakers complete the look.

Brunello Cucinelli jacket, $2,695, vest, $1,645, shirt, $695, and sneakers, $1,095.

SPRING/SUMMER 2018 75

Kiton designs all its own fabrics, often drawing

inspiration from heritage patterns and then refreshing them with unexpected colour combinations. This glen check in rich earth tones and terracotta orange is a fine example, courageously but impeccably balanced by the bold striped shirt and the unifying blue of the tie. The jacket is made of exceptionally lightweight cashmere and feels as soft as a sigh.

Kiton jacket, $6,995, dress shirt, $595, pants, $850, and tie, $275.

Both these looks from Ermenegildo Zegna are exclusive to Harry Rosen.

On the left, the versatile sports jacket gets dressed up with tropical-weight dress pants in high-twist Trofeo wool, a dress shirt and a tie with a touch of copper and orange in the pattern – colours from Zegna’s palette this season. The tasselled loafers are made of woven pelle tessuta leather.

Ermenegildo Zegna jacket, $2,895, shirt, $440, tie, $225, pants, $810, and loafers, $1,150. On the right, the suit in a bold blue check needs nothing more than a plain dress shirt and crisp pocket square.

Ermenegildo Zegna suit, $3,195, and shirt, $450. Shot at Oretta restaurant on King Street West in Toronto. Under Executive Chef Christian Fontolan, the kitchen specializes in authentic Italian fare with modern-day classics. Commute Design created Oretta’s interior. oretta.to

This season’s jacket story is all about striking colour and pattern – a lively esprit that even extends to our suits. Blues and greys appear in lighter shades when the sun shines.

The Kei jacket was Canali’s great success story a few

seasons ago – and it’s still going strong. Half-lined and supremely comfortable, this example in an orange windowpane wool-silk-linen fabric explains why.

Canali jacket, $1,598, shirt, $265, and tie, $150;

Mason’s pants, $265; Ermenegildo Zegna duffle, $5,450.

SPRING/SUMMER 2018 83

Here’s the future of the suit according to Z Zegna –

completely unconstructed and unlined, with drawstring pants and the slim Drop 8 silhouette. It’s pure wool but also machine-washable. Just pop it into its bag and drop it in the washing machine. Wrinkle-resistant, this suit is ideal for travel.

Z Zegna suit, $1,698; Patrick Assaraf knit, $95; Henderson for Harry Rosen sneakers, $525. 84 HARRY

Samuelsohn goes from strength to strength,

seamlessly merging the latest technology with traditional hand-tailoring details. This jacket is made with a sumptuous wool-silkcashmere fabric from Loro Piana’s mill.

Samuelsohn jacket, $1,298; Canali shirt, $285, and jeans, $350; Montblanc portfolio case, $1,025.

SPRING/SUMMER 2018 85

Upping the ante in terms of luxury and performance,

Samuelsohn invented Icewool, a pure-wool fabric that undergoes temperature shock to become resistant to water, staining and wrinkling while still feeling natural. This Icewool suit’s tailoring details are of the highest calibre – and it’s made in Canada.

Samuelsohn suit, $1,298; Eton shirt, $280, and tie, $150;

Montblanc

document case, $1,795.

You can buy – and wear – BOSS’s classic blue-andwhite seersucker jacket and pants separately – but how great they look as a suit! Very cool in the office, the outfit works beautifully for summer social events.

BOSS suit, $1,095.

SPRING/SUMMER 2018 87

There are no boundaries when you coordinate Etro’s

vibrant patterns. The redand-blue-check jacket exudes modern confidence with a paisley-and-wavepatterned shirt. Or choose a more formal look with a pale blue dress shirt. Either way, it looks great for work and play.

Etro jacket, $1,698, shirt, $435, and pants, $425; Salvatore Ferragamo loafers, $725.

Atelier Munro’s youthful, debonair, slightly iconoclastic spirit is on show in this kick-ass double-breasted suit. The CustomMade program lets you choose fabric, lining and tailoring details. Exclusive to Harry Rosen in Canada.

Canali introduces a new performance fabric

it calls Impeccable, treated to resist water, stains and wrinkles. It’s used here for the dress shirt and the elegant blue-checked suit – just the ticket for travel or long days at the office. Every Canali item is made in Italy.

(Left) It’s the way L.B.M. 1911 stitches the cotton-linen fabric that

gives the illusion of structure – and makes this our best-selling soft jacket, year after year. Light blue is this season’s essential colour.

Two English companies show how unstuffy a jacket can be.

(Left) The navy cotton jacket and drawstring joggers from Hardy Amies can be worn as a suit; the knit and sneakers accentuate the casual option. (Right) Harris Wharf’s unstructured jacket is woven in cotton so light it’s almost translucent. Houndstooth overlaid with a windowpane tips the wink to traditional British patterns.

The coat’s the thing…

Moorer’s Ravel coat is modern and, urbane, with a removable hood and hidden buttons – a great travel coat that’s perfect for springtime temperatures. Add it to your business wardrobe.

CURRENT EXHIBITION Photography Riley Stewart Styling Joan Balda Grooming Laura Szucs, Judy Inc Every great international design house has its own personality – its stylistic DNA. Once recognized, that signature becomes unmistakable. And yet, every season also has its common trends. Bombers and soft jackets are once again obligatory, but now in satin nylon or other lightweight warm-weather fabrics. Shorts are everywhere. The new approach to a summer suit is to buy the jacket and trousers separately and wear them as you wish – call it the deconstructed approach to dressing.

New to Harry Rosen (at our Pacific Centre, Vancouver, store), Thom Browne is a designer who delights in bucking trends. That’s his dachshund, Hector, embroidered in gold on the cropped, wide-fit seersucker jacket. Matching seersucker shorts have a fashionforward schoolboy appeal. Thom Browne jacket, PHOTOGRAPHY, TK

Reacting against the trim silhouette of the last few years, Lanvin plays games with proportion. The shirt is cropped short but boasts two oversized pockets. The super-lightweight, hooded windbreaker is deliberately loose, creating a cool urban look with a pair of utility shorts.

Lanvin bomber, $2,525, shirt, $1,265, shorts, $950, and sneakers, $810.

Emporio Armani’s version of the modern suit includes a completely

Do not expect to go unnoticed in this outfit we

pieced together from two Dolce & Gabbana runway looks. The polo features playing cards, a theme in this season’s collection, while the printed cotton pants are cuffed and cropped above the ankle.

Trust TOM FORD to reinvent the iconic jean jacket

but in soft, supple powder blue “cashmere suede” instead of denim. With the subtle influence of tailored clothing (the fit of the shoulder, the suppression of the waist), it feels sculpted to your body. Pair it with jeans and splendid green leather loafers. Mr. Ford calls this fuchsia fabric “lightweight, summertime, daytime velvet.” Despite those peaked lapels, the jacket has nothing to do with evening dress; wear it over a henley and five-pocket pants.

“Waikiki” says the T-shirt

from Dsquared2’s new collection, and Hawaii inspired the floral print on the front of the varsity bomber. The jeans are typical of the brand – extradistressed with paint splatters and reversed patches.

Dsquared2 bomber, $1,565, T-shirt, $485, and jeans, $750.

The Tod’s eye for detail gives this loafer a decorative braid around the apron of the shoe. Each panel of Santoni’s double monk strap uses a different shade of brown leather for a subtly gradated effect. Canali is the master of deep burnished tones, exemplified by this derby with a brogue medallion on the toe. Barker brings English cobbling know-how to the classic penny loafer. The cognac hue of To Boot New York’s monk strap is the perfect colour for summer.

Sutor Mantellassi has been handcrafting superb footwear in Florence for over a century, and the brand is exclusive to Harry Rosen in Canada. Casual Luxury Clockwise from top Ermenegildo Zegna uses its remarkable pelle tessuta woven leather to create this tasselled loafer. Effortless Statements Clockwise from top left Sneakers can be masterpieces, too. Ermenegildo Zegna and Harry Rosen collaborated to create this amazingly flexible shoe in navy suede with a vicuña-covered lining. Church’s adds a touch of brown leather to the tongue of its gentleman’s loafer in soft brown suede. Another collaboration, this time between Ermenegildo Zegna and Maserati, features woven leather and elasticized bands on the tongue. OFF THE RUNWAY Photography Chris Nicholls Styling Jimmy Moorhouse, Plutino Group Grooming Laura Szucs, Judy Inc There’s a new mood in the air – casual, sporty, relaxed… It’s a free-spirited and eclectic way of dressing, combining camo, khaki, denim and military references and now adding athleisure into the mix. This is athleisure’s moment. The clothes are inspired by sportswear but worn away from the gym or the track. Wear a whole outfit or just integrate something into your look. A great jacket is the essential finishing touch. Now you’re making a statement.
