At Twenty-five
Acknowledgements A book is, by necessity, a collaborative effort. This one is no different. “At Twenty-five” would not have been possible without the creative energies, hard work and generosity of a great group of people, many of whom we have had the privilege of working with for years and years, some since the inception of Hambly & Woolley. Thank you x25. —B&B

At Twenty-five
At Twenty-five It’s the atomic number of manganese. Five squared, a quarter of a dollar, a quarter century. Baseball teams reserve the number for their best slugger—think Barry Bonds or Mark McGwire. It forms the title of albums by Adele, George Michael, Blues Traveler, and a-ha. The Hindi word for the number, pachisi, is the name of India’s national board game (which inspired the Western adaptation, Parcheesi).
25. Spouses are meant to adorn their partners with irises, tsavorite and silver on the day that marks 25 years together. The tradition of a silver anniversary or jubilee originated in the Medieval German empire, where husbands would crown their wives with a silver wreath to mark 25 years of marriage. The silver symbolized the harmony needed to make their union last so long. A number of systems, including car rental services, NHL teams and the U.S. House of Representatives, use “under 25” as a gauge for designating youth. And, according to the reputable source affinitynumerology.com, “The essence of 25 is intuitive, curious.” The associations that have become paired with 25, like those for any number, are a combination of historical traditions, the trivia of human culture and meanings that we decide to give them. This thought forms the backbone of our project—where do we find meaning and when do we create it ourselves? What inspires us, what do we find beautiful and what fascinates us? Everyone here at Hambly & Woolley has contributed list and design ideas, shared suggestions and created pages for these collections of 25. There are a number of things that 25 years might symbolize for H&W—are we harmonious? Intuitive and curious? A heavy hitter? Simply no longer young? It’s perhaps not up to us to decide. This book is Hambly & Woolley’s own way of commemorating its 13,148,730 minutes that started on April Fool’s Day, 1990.

The Kiwa hirsuta, better known as the “yeti crab,” was discovered in the South Pacific Ocean in March 2005. The abundant silky blond bristles that cover the yeti crab’s legs and claws aren’t just for show. Scientists believe the creature uses its hairy pincers to detoxify poisonous minerals in the water emitted by the hydrothermal vents where it lives.

Natural patterns
Patterns are omnipresent in nature. They exist on a scale from basic cell structure to distinct appearances—the crystalline symmetry of a snowflake, the spiral of a nautilus. Visible or invisible,

Big questions
How do we decide between right and wrong? Is there other intelligent life out there? Do we have souls? Do we have free will? What are people in power hiding from us? Why do we dream? Is there a god? How and why did the universe begin? Will we ever have a theory of everything? What is beauty? What does true happiness look like? Is there such a thing as fate? Can we experience anything objectively? Could a computer become conscious? What happens after we die? What person living now will be remembered in 100 years? 1,000? Is time travel physically or logically possible? Can we know anything for sure? Why is there something rather than nothing? Will we ever live in harmony with nature? Do miracles really happen? What will education look like in the future? How many people can the Earth sustain? Is reality what we know it to be? Why are we here?

Most of Leonardo da Vinci’s inventions never made it beyond the page, but he built one of his strangest—the robotic knight. Da Vinci fitted a suit of armour with gears and wheels that were connected to an elaborate pulley system, which allowed it to sit down, stand up, open and close its mouth, move its head, and lift its visor. Roboticist Mark Rosheim built a working prototype of the contraption in 2002, and he later used da Vinci’s designs as the inspiration for planetary exploration robots he developed for NASA.

Superstitions
✣ Eat a cooked mouse to get rid of a cold ✣ A baby is not safe until it has sneezed for the first time ✣ If you sit at the corner of a table, you will never marry ✣ Cutting nails after sunset on a Friday will keep your teeth healthy ✣ If you kiss a child on the neck, you’ll drift off to sleep ✣ Kill a spider only in the morning; spiders in the afternoon are a sign of joy, and in the evening, hope ✣ Any noodles in your bowl should be left uncut, as a sign of long life ✣ A cactus near your door will save you from trouble ✣ Never be photographed in threes; the one in the middle can expect to die ✣ If you play with fire, you will wet your bed
✣ Your finger will fall off if you point it at a rainbow ✣ Dreaming of a pig means a lucky day ✣ It’s good luck to rub a lottery ticket on the belly of a pregnant woman ✣ Scissors under your pillow can cure you of nightmares ✣ It’s good luck to step in dog poop with your left foot, but bad luck to step in it with your right foot ✣ Gum chewed after dark will turn into dead flesh ✣ Garlic shoved in your ears will keep away illness ✣ If your left ear warms up, someone is saying something nasty about you ✣ Putting bread upside-down on the table brings bad luck ✣ If you have an unwanted visitor, put a broom behind the door and they will leave ✣ Trust not the man whose eyebrows meet, for in his heart you’ll find deceit. ✣ If you bite your tongue while you are eating, then you have recently told a lie ✣ Never eat anything while a funeral bell is tolling or toothache will follow ✣ Dimple on the chin, devil within. ✣ Hiccups are caused by someone maligning you; guess who it is and they’ll stop

Clichéd motivational quotes
“ You have to kiss a lot of frogs before you find your prince.” YOLO (you only live once). Live, laugh, love. If life gives you lemons, make lemonade. You have to look through the rain to see the rainbow. Work hard, play hard. No bird soars too high if he soars with his own wings. Without hard work, nothing grows but weeds. It’s not whether you fall down but whether you get back up. Don’t worry, be happy. If you can dream it, you can do it. To the world you are one person, but to one person you could mean the world. Dream it. Wish it. Do it. In order to succeed, we must first believe that we can. You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take. Get rich or die trying. Go for it now. The future is promised to no one. You are confined only by the walls you build yourself. Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars. The secret of getting ahead is getting started. Don’t be afraid to fail. Be afraid not to try. Life has no limitations, except the ones you make. Pearls don’t lie on the seashore. If you want one, you must dive for it. Turn your can’ts into cans and your dreams into plans. Go big or go home.
