HAMPTON HALL CHARITABLE FUND

HHCF Volunteers

Shayne O’Connell, Denise Cadres, Jodi Kennedy, and Lori Desing presented Beaufort Memorial Hospital Foundation a check for $16,000 on behalf of the Hampton Hall members who contributed to the Charity Par 3 event in the spring.

The Hampton Hall Charitable Fund continues its mission to provide support to charitable organizations of the Lowcountry.

In June, we had our “Stock the Van” event to benefit Bluffton Self Help and our annual School Supplies Drive took place in August to benefit Red Cedar Elementary.

Mark your calendar for Saturday, October 14 and plan to attend the Wine Tasting held at the Hampton Hall Community Clubhouse. There will be several distributors sharing their best wines in the ballroom as well as a cigar bar for those who would like to partake out on the lakeside terrace. Details and registration will be online.

In December, HHCF will again hold the always popular Toy Drive. Look for details on the club website in November.

The Annual Holiday Open House Tour is scheduled for Sunday, December 3 to finish out 2023 with festive style. We are looking for people to volunteer to display their homes for this amazing event. If you are interested in having your home featured in the tour, please contact Denise Cadres at dcadres@aol.com or 781-635-0786.

For more information on the Hampton Hall Charitable Fund, please visit our website at www.hamptonhallclubsc. com/charitable-fund. Volunteers are always welcome and appreciated at our events.

memberSPOTLIGHT

Jim and Sandy Frost made Hampton Hall home in June 2022, relocating from Franklin, TN, when they moved to their new house on Wicklow overlooking hole #8.

Sandy grew up outside of Des Moines, IA. She graduated from Stephens College in Columbia, MO, where she majored in Business Administration. She worked in retail at the Younkers department store chain, finishing her career as a buyer. She then focused on raising the Frost’s two children and supporting Jim’s career. With many homes over the years, Sandy has experienced and enjoys all aspects of home renovation and is quite the painter.

Jim was raised in St. Louis, MO, where his family owned an electrical equipment distributor. After attending the University of Missouri, Jim worked for a short time in the family business before embarking on a corporate career. The majority of his career was spent at Aramark, a global business services company. Despite the inevitable challenges and relocations, Jim thoroughly enjoyed the 23 years spent at Aramark,

completing his career in 2022 as president of the refreshments business.

The Frosts have two children, both of whom got married within the last year. Their son Matthew and his new wife, Hillary, live in Atlanta, GA, where they are focused on their business careers and renovating a 1950s home. Their daughter Allison and her new husband, Trevor, live in Houston, where they are both focusing on their careers in public school education. They too are renovating a 1950s home.

As the Frosts made their way through 15 homes in 7 different states, (Missouri, Iowa, Illinois, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Illinois again, Tennessee, and now South Carolina) they always had an eye on the Lowcountry. Jim vacationed on Hilton Head Island during his childhood, and Sandy was introduced to Kiawah on their honeymoon 37 years ago.

The Frosts purchased a Moss Creek rental property in 2010 sight-unseen via an online auction. After verifying that the

property actually existed, the couple became the proud owners of a small and very dated home. Luckily the home had one tenant for a decade, and when the tenant finally moved on, the timing allowed the Frosts to move in and begin a complete renovation. After the many surprises to be expected in a 40-year-old home, the finished product turned out great. However, it proved to be just too small, causing the Frosts to contemplate finding a new home in the area.

After looking at almost all communities in the Hilton Head/Bluffton area, the Frosts chose Hampton Hall. There were many reasons for this decision, including the welcoming team on the discovery tour, the helpful golf staff, the friendly Pete’s team, and the great amenities. Sandy’s immediate welcome at the Fitness Center and Jim’s round of golf sealed the deal.

The Frosts couldn’t be happier with their decision, as they continue to make new friends at the many events and activities provided in Hampton Hall. The community also gets a solid thumbs-up from Murphy, a seven-yearold Brittany who can be spotted with Sandy on walks each morning. The Frosts look forward to many years in Hampton Hall, with a few months each summer spent at their Lake Michigan cottage.

Back at it!

Everyone is excited to get back on the golf course. The break in the golf action feels similar to a long Minnesota winter. I remember growing up waiting for the snow to melt, so that our hometown golf course would open. We were so anxious to play! Although there was no snow involved, this feels eerily similar.

What are you looking forward to most? The three main parts of the project were new Tiff Eagle greens, rebuilt bunkers and drainage. The new greens will be a hit and fun to putt on. The restored bunkers sure look nice and bright from the tees. I think the drainage could be the improvement that steals the show.

The crews that were selected to do the work were excellent. We are so fortunate to have worked with such skilled teams.

As for me, I happen to be looking forward to the return of the smiling faces and laughter that is associated with our Club. We are ready for your return!

The Welcome Back event is scheduled for October 1.

See you then!

Reducing Lower Back Pain in Golfers

As more golfers stop in to use the Fitness Center, the #1 complaint I hear is regarding lower back pain after a day on the course. The rotation, speed and repetition of the golf swing affect the lower back and can cause injury. I previously noted the importance of core strength and stretching, but I want to address a few of the main causes of lower back pain so you can continue playing your best golf!

1. Lack of Hip Internal Rotation – if you lack internal rotation in either hip, then you may be compensating by rotating through the lower back.

2. Lack of Thoracic Rotation – If you are limited in flexibility in your thoracic spine, which is the uppermiddle part of your back, then you may be putting pressure on your lower back during your golf swing. You may tend to arch your back or rotate the lumbar spine too much and this may cause damage.

3. Lack of Core Stability – If you lack stability in your core, this can cause injury when force is applied.

4. Swing Mechanics – There are a few things to look for with swing mechanics that can be causing your back pain on either side. Reverse spine angle is one of them. For example, a right-handed golfer will rotate and lean the torso towards the left-excessive lateral upper body bend putting pressure on the lower back. Ask Brent or Chris how to fix your swing mechanics! They can address specific areas of improvement.

5. Lifestyle factors – Obesity, gender, age, and overall genetics also play a role. Losing weight through the mid-section will help.

So, what can you do? I challenge you to try the Core & More or Functional Strength class. These classes are not just for the ladies. You will see progress after only a few weeks. Don’t think the classes are for you? See Mia or Romeo for a few personal training sessions to strengthen weaker areas. Start working towards your goals now. Go back to the basics, stretch and get moving!
