FROM THE DESK
Dear Members, I hope everyone is well and enjoying the start of the summer season here at Hampton Hall! We welcome all new members that now call Hampton Hall Club their new home and community. As I look throughout this newsletter, it is such a pleasure to see so many wonderful opportunities for engagement and socialization following a year of distance between members, friends, and families. We are opening more services weekly and are working with member advisory groups to accommodate our evergrowing membership needs. I encourage you to read each departmental section for innovative and exciting new events as well as some traditional favorites. Even if you do not participate in an event or activity, you just may be interested in the fun they provide! It is important to remember that your support of these events also keeps our current staff active and engaged. All HHC staff members appreciate the interaction with members as we work together following the Covid isolation, and they do feel part of the HHC family. Recently, a member asked me what my biggest concern is coming out of the Covid pandemic. The answer is similar to what everyone has read about or heard on the news. A shortage in staffing and the supply chain – two of the top components which HHC needs each day to operate. The Board is aware of the staffing challenges we face and how it impacts each department within the Club. We are taking this challenge very seriously by creating incentives, sending
personal invitations, posting positions in-state and out-of-state, using various social media advertising, and more. We have a great working environment here at the club, with tremendous programs and benefits for employees who would like to join the Hampton Hall Team. However, like other hospitality businesses, we are seeing very few people apply for positions. We will continue to search for qualified candidates to ensure HHC provides the member experience desired by all! The supply chain is the second component that is vital to our livelihood. Due to the pandemic and staffing limitations, items we have used for years are not being produced, are not available or warehouses have closed. I mention these two factors of doing business so that the membership is aware that the HHC staff on the front lines and back of the house in every department has worked tirelessly so the membership does not feel the impact. When you see the management team or the staff, thank them all for their work and dedication. They are all working tirelessly behind the scenes to make sure the best experience possible is provided for our membership. As always, please provide my office with any positive feedback on the areas you feel we are excelling in and the areas you may feel need additional attention. Giving direct feedback often helps move things along if it something we can put in motion. Thank you for your patience. We remain Hampton Hall Strong Together! Warmest Regards, Loraine Ellis Vienne, CCM, CAM

“ I was fortunate to meet so many wonderful people in Hampton Hall prior to the pandemic, making this past year much easier than it might have been!”
memberSPOTLIGHT Kathryn Boudreaux
A
fter frequently visiting Charleston during her son’s four years at The Citadel, Kathryn Boudreaux grew to love the Lowcountry and moved from the DC metro area to Bluffton in June 2019.
Born into a military family, she is well-traveled! Both parents were Naval officers during WWII. Her father was a career naval aviator and her mother was a Navy nurse, serving on the hospital ship USS Samaritan in the Pacific. Kathryn broke the family’s Naval tradition and served first in the Army as a Russian linguist, then later in Air Force as an Intelligence Officer for a total of 29 years of service! She lived overseas nearly 9 years (twice in Germany for five years, and 3 years in Russia at the US Embassy Moscow). She majored in French at university and had the opportunity to live in France for a year. Her strong 6 | Summer 2021
background in French led her to spend short periods of time at the US Embassies in Paris, France, Kinshasa, Zaire (now Congo), and Bujumbura, Burundi. Kathryn’s late husband, Bob, was also an Air Force officer, starting out as a C-130 Pilot and later working in nuclear non-proliferation, which took the couple to the US Embassy Moscow for 3 years. Bob and Kathryn were the result of “old-fashioned” matchmaking in May of 1985 at a promotion party at the Ft. Myer Officer’s Club near Washington, DC. One of the invited guests asked if he could bring a friend or two, and Kathryn replied “Yes, the more, the merrier!” Turns out, his hope was that she might like one of the two extra guys, and she did! She and Bob were married in October 1987. While living in Moscow, their son, Aaron, attended Russian “Detskiy Sad” (Pre-school and Kindergarten). He was the only American child in the school! Aaron is a 2016 graduate of The Citadel and has continued the Air Force tradition as an AC-130 Gunship pilot and is also the 3rd generation of military pilots. Kathryn recalls her most memorable experience in the Air Force back in 2004 when she was honored to serve as a French interpreter and liaison officer for a US
memberSPOTLIGHT Army Blackhawk battalion that was providing VIP Airlift throughout Normandy for the 60th Anniversary of D-Day. She based at the airport near Deauville, France. The days leading up to June 6th, were extremely busy as various heads of state landed at the airport, such as Prince Charles and British Prime Minister Tony Blair. On June 7th, with the Commemoration ceremonies having ended, the Battalion commander arranged for three helicopters to fly up the coast of Normandy, taking along some members of the battalion and Kathryn. They landed at Omaha Beach, Utah Beach, and Point du Hoc and were able to spend about 90 minutes at each location. Kathryn remembers walking on Omaha Beach with a young Army private and saying to him, “Many of the young men who landed here in 1944 were just your age.” Later, as she was returning to the Blackhawk, an excited French woman in her early 70’s approached and asked if she spoke French. Replying “yes,” the woman asked Kathryn to please tell the other Americans how much she appreciated the United States and what transpired in June 1944. She went on to explain that she and her parents were living in Normandy and knew that the Americans had landed. Fearing reprisals from the Germans, they went into hiding in a drainage culvert. After several days in hiding, a young American soldier found them and was able to communicate that it was safe to return to their home. Sixty years later, her gratitude was still obvious. When Kathryn moved to Hampton Hall Club in the summer of 2019, she was eager to get involved and meet her neighbors. Prior to the pandemic, she was involved in a large book club, Bunco, and the Lowcountry Christian Women’s Group. She was recently “recruited” to be the chairperson of the Military Liaison Committee for the Lowcountry Foundation of Wounded Military Heroes (LFWMH). The Foundation hosts an annual Golf Classic in May here in Hampton Hall for service members and veterans who have post-9/11 combat-related injuries. As of this writing, she has coordinated for 55 Wounded Heroes (to include one FEMALE Hero!) who will be attending this year’s event. As life returns to a new “normal”, Kathryn may start a “Cookbook Club” where the host chooses a favorite cookbook or chef, and guests bring dishes from that book or chef’s repertoire. Outside of Hampton Hall, she likes to kayak, dine, and cook with the Women’s Association of Hilton Head Island. She still loves to travel and looks forward to sightseeing when things return to normal. Prior to the pandemic, she
“When asked what she enjoys most about Hampton Hall Club, Kathryn said, ‘The sense of community! I could feel it when I first started looking at homes here.’ ” was singing in a musical duo “The Sojourners”, performing at assisted living facilities in Bluffton and Hilton Head. In March 2020, just before the world turned upside down due to COVID-19, Kathryn left for a long-planned trip to the South of France. She loves cooking classes, and this was her third cooking class in France. This class was especially meaningful, as it was held at a beautiful home known as “La Pitchoune” located about 45 minutes north of Nice. She spent a wonderful week cooking and exploring local French villages and markets. The reason this trip was so special is that La Pitchoune was the summer home of Julia Child. Since Kathryn had been the first to sign up for the trip, she was able to choose which bedroom she wanted…of course, she chose Julia’s! When asked what she enjoys most about Hampton Hall Club, Kathryn said, “The sense of community! I could feel it when I first started looking at homes here. Moving here as a widow, I knew I needed that sense of community, which is much harder to find in a metropolitan area such as Washington, DC. I was fortunate to meet so many wonderful people in Hampton Hall prior to the pandemic, making this past year much easier than it might have been!” hamptonhallclubsc.com | 7

diningSERVICES The Heart of Hospitality by Bert Stewart, Dining Services Manager
I
f, like me, you are a fan of British television comedy, then you may recall the popular BBC series, Fawlty Towers, starring John Cleese (Monty Python) who played the character, Basil Fawlty, a somewhat cynical and snobbish social climber from the British middle-class who as the owner of an English seaside hotel is compelled to serve “that annoying section of the general public who insist on staying at hotels.” Exceedingly unsuited for the hospitality business, his intolerance of and often rude demeanor toward guest of the hotel inevitably led to hilarity as Fawlty in each episode struggles to provide the type of hospitality which so eludes him. On the more serious side and in his book “Setting the Table: The Transforming Power of Hospitality in Business” the noted New York restauranteur, Danny Meyer, writes a lot about hospitality, its application, its importance, and power in the restaurant business. As he puts it so eloquently, “Service is the technical delivery of a product. Hospitality is how the delivery of that product makes its recipient feel. Service is a monologue—we decide how we want to do things and set our own standards for service. Hospitality, on the other hand, is a dialogue.” He goes on to explain that this dialogue is the exchange between service staff and their guests, the message being, “We are here for you and we are on your side!” Extraordinary service, that is to say, the skills, the product knowledge, the sense of urgency, timing and delivery, is all of it essential to any positive member dining experience; and yet, if these things are not elaborated with exemplary hospitality expressed through the thoughtful, caring and gracious things that our service staff must do to make you and your guests feel welcomed and cared for when dining, then our team has failed you. Thus, when you visit our dining facilities and while our Executive Chef and his team, as they always do, work hard behind the scenes to provide you with exceptional food prepared to order, our service team remains committed to delivering, without exception, with a meaningful, positive, and uplifting experience. That’s the business of hospitality. As Danny Meyer writes, “Business, like life, is all about how you make people feel. It’s that simple, and it’s that hard.”

golfCORNER Why do I have to post my score? by Brent Carlson, PGA Head Golf Professional
O
ne of the great aspects of our sport is that you can play a match against a player of different ability and still enjoy your match. This is made possible through your USGA handicap at the Club. Our Club offers a variety of events for all to enjoy, and we want each of these events to be fair for all who play. You can imagine that a player with a lot of data in the handicap system, over time, will produce a more accurate reflection of their ability as opposed to someone that has very little data. That is why there is a lot of chatter about posting on a regular basis. Back in the old days, players were given a lot of time to post their rounds, but leaders in the handicapping field recognized that we all get busy and if posting does not occur shortly after the round, it likely will not get done. The new standard is that we should all post on the day that we play. I have seen many players adjust their behavior to do this quickly on their phone before being seated at Pete’s Grill for a post-round beverage – way to go! We have recently transitioned to our new handicap committee. We owe a great deal of thanks to Craig Williams who served as our Handicap Chairman for the past few
years – Thank you Craig Williams! Our new committee is George Otten, Ian Plester, and Kay Williams. Please give them the utmost courtesy as they communicate their thoughts about posting scores, as they are simply assisting the Club in making our games as fair as possible for you and our membership. If you do not yet have a handicap established or have questions about posting, feel free to stop by the Golf Shop so we can get you up to speed. The process is not meant to be intimidating, but it can be if you are just getting started. Let’s help the new committee by posting right after you play. It will benefit us all in the long run. Keep it in the Shortgrass!

fall, winter, and spring play, which causes soil compaction. Soil related problems usually take place in the top 3 inches of turf. Improper aeration and topdressing are the biggest contributors to soil related problems.
Aerification Dates
JUNE 7-13 AND AUGUST 2-8
It’s Great to Aerate!
I
’m expecting an easy transition into aeration this year. My team and I are going back to the way we used to transition greens in the 90’s. I’m sure some of you remember those years…I was young, gas was cheap, hamburger was still 99 cents a pound, and drivers and golf balls weren’t nearly as good as they are today! However, some things never change: most golf courses located in coastal South Carolina aerate in late spring or early summer. We normally start aeration of golf course on Sunday afternoon around 1:30 PM on the back putting green and end up moving to the 1st hole around 2:30 PM, which closes the front 9. The back 9 will remain open. We will normally work to 6:30 or 7:00 PM that evening. The reason we start on Sunday is to ensure our crew and equipment are ready so we can hit the ground running Monday morning. We have done this for many years with only a few exceptions. Whenever we wait until Monday to start aeration, we just always seem to have bad luck. What everyone forgets about aerification week is that we don’t just have to aerate and topdress the golf course; we must also cut all the grass, which makes for a long week!
Greens will be core aerated on a 2 by 1.5 inch spacing. After aeration, cores will be cleaned up and topdressing applied. Once topdressing dyes it will be brushed in to fill the hole caused by coring. Greens will be rolled every day for 2 weeks before being cut. Fertilizer will be applied to greens to speed up the healing process. It will take 4 weeks for the greens to get back to normal, depending on the weather.
In much of the same process as the greens, the tees and approaches will be cored. Cores will be cleaned up and topdressing applied. I estimate that it will take 2 to 3 weeks for tees and approaches to heal. Fairways and some parts of rough will be shatter tines. The shatter tines make a 1 by 4-inch slice and shifts soil laterally, which breaks up soil compaction. This year we will be topdressing fairways, weather permitting. Aeration and heavy topdressing are disruptive to the golf course, but they must be done to maintain healthy turf and the longevity of the golf course. Aeration and topdressing rank in the top 5 most important actions to maintain the golf course each year.
Areas such as greens, tees, fairways, approaches and certain areas in the rough require aeration to relieve compaction and to revitalize our warm season grass from hamptonhallclubsc.com | 13

fit&HEALTHY Detoxing for Optimal Health Jennifer Wolfe, MS, CSCS, PPSC
Here are signs that your body isn’t functioning properly from too much toxic load and it’s time for a purposeful detox: • Digestive distress such as IBS, acid reflux, constipation, indigestion, or food allergies/intolerances • Belly bloat or excess weight • Headaches • Skin problems • Poor sleep and fatigue • Mood swings, anxiety, or depression • Emotional eating • Hormonal imbalances
Time to get your body back on track? Look for a detox program that offers all natural solutions that your body will recognize to support its innate processes. A whole food detox or a juice cleanse are two top choices that offer high amounts of nutrients. Give your body what it needs to eliminate the toxic load and you will start to feel better from the inside out!
What results should I expect from a whole food detox or a juice cleanse program?
H
ave you tried a detox or cleanse? 11 years ago, a friend wanted me to look into cleanses and detoxing. My first thought was that your body is supposed to cleanse itself and doing a detox program sounded extreme. After much research, I realize that our bodies can benefit from a healthful detoxification process. Your body is combating stresses and toxins from poor food choices and the environment on a daily basis. Effective cleansing gives your body a chance to eliminate toxic load so it can begin to heal itself from the inside.
Why detox? Toxins are everywhere in our world from cleaning and beauty products to pesticide, plastics and air we breathe. Even though our bodies are designed to detox naturally there can be a build up due to the constant amount of toxins we are exposed to. With the gradual build up of toxins come imbalances in the body. 16 | Summer 2021

armer weather and sunshine steer us outdoors with all sorts of activities and fun. With that in mind - one can almost never have enough sunscreen on! Reapplication of sunscreen often when outdoors is always a good idea. It is recommended that you replace your sunscreen every year, and most sunscreens list their expiration date. Try to remember to apply to the tops of your feet and the tips of your ears – these areas are often forgotten, but once sunburned…unforgettable! A dip in the pool or surf is so refreshing but be sure to re-apply afterward even if your sunscreen is waterproof. Neglecting reapplication can lead to a sunburn that can squelch your vacation fun days. A little sun is a good source of vitamin D mixed with a sunless tan lotion, and your favorite moisturizer is a great mix for a healthy glow! Aloe vera is a great soothing treatment post sun exposure too! After your outdoor sports, exercise, or enthusiastic gardening, consider an appointment at the refreshing and relaxing Spa to wind down. Massage & facial treatments combined with subtle sound and aroma therapies transport you to a quiet rest while giving your skin emollients to revive!

PAR 3 TOURNAMENT BREAKS RECORDS Even COVID can’t keep us down!
T
he Hampton Hall Charitable Fund’s fourth annual Tee Off Against Cancer in the Lowcountry Par 3 Tournament proved to be our best event yet, attracting 112 golfers and generating $9,000 to support Beaufort Memorial Hospital’s Keyserling Cancer Center. With a roughly 20 percent increase in attendance over the previous year, the March 19 fundraiser was carefully managed according to COVID safety protocols and played under clear skies with cool temperatures. The event was especially meaningful this year because it brought our community together after a very difficult 12 months and offered much-needed support to the Keyserling Cancer Center’s patients and their families. . Spirits were high throughout the tournament, but no one was smiling more than tournament winners Jerry Bieck and Natalie Buontempo. The HHCF would like to sincerely thank all of our dedicated volunteers, the hardworking Club staff, and everyone who played in the tournament. See you next year!
HHCF Puts the Fun in Fundraising in 2021
I
t’s sunny, hot and humid in the Lowcountry, but the Hampton Hall Charitable Fund (HHCF) is ready for fall – and winter – with a host of events designed to support the needs of underprivileged children and families in our area.
First up, as schools get ready to welcome students back in August, we’ll ask our Hampton Hall neighbors to again contribute to our annual School Supplies Drive. For the last three years, thanks to an outpouring of donations from our community, we’ve enabled both students and teachers to start the school year right. In July, we’ll send out the dates of the drive as well as information about which local schools we’ve chosen to support, what supplies are most needed and where you can find drop-off boxes. On Wednesday, September 22, we’ll mark the first day of autumn with our first-ever fashion show and luncheon, which will feature women’s clothing from some of the most fashionable local boutiques. The event also will include lots of special surprises so look for more details in the coming weeks. 20 | Summer 2021
We’re bringing back our Mah Jong Marathon on Wednesday, October 13, which had to be canceled last year because of COVID. The tournament has been one of our most successful events, attracting players from inside and outside Hampton Hall. It will definitely be a full day of fun. Join us Sunday, December 5 for our Holiday Home Tour. Don your holiday sweaters and tour some of the “best dressed” Hampton Hall homes for Christmas. The first Holiday Home Tour in 2019 proved more popular than expected, drawing people from Bluffton, Beaufort and Hilton Head. We’re hoping this year’s event is even bigger and better than before. The HHCF continues its commitment to helping children and families find the essential services they need. We owe our success to your generosity, and we look forward to seeing everyone at one or all of our upcoming events. If you would like to volunteer to help us with our work, please contact HHCF President Denise Cadres at dcadres@aol.com. If you would like to make a monetary contribution, you can mail a check made out to the HHCF to the Hampton Hall Charitable Fund at 170 Hampton Hall Boulevard, Bluffton, SC 29910. Thank you!
The Lowcountry Foundation for Wounded Military Heroes
I
t is hard to believe that it was over ten years ago that a group of Hampton Hall neighbors and friends began an outreach program to lend a hand to veterans in the Lowcountry. In doing their research, the group (many veterans themselves), had been deeply dismayed to discover the profound hardships and challenges that wounded veterans faced when returning home from post 9-11 combat. Wanting to recognize and support these heroes on a local level, The Lowcountry Foundation for Wounded Military Heroes was established. Through the dedication, determination and generosity of many, the all-volunteer Foundation has grown each year. 2020 was to have marked the Foundation’s 10th anniversary; COVID had other plans. It was disappointing then, that the LFWMH’s largest fundraiser – a golf tournament where
combat wounded service men and women are hosted and honored – had to be canceled. Recognizing that support of the wounded veterans and the programs vital to them was still as important as ever, the LFWMH found other creative ways to garner support and, in doing so, was able to raise $115,000 in 2020, allowing for the continued support of the programs vital to our Lowcountry Wounded Heroes. It is with great anticipation and gratitude that we will host our 10th LFWMH Golf Tournament on May 24th at both Hampton Hall and Oldfield Golf Clubs. Although you are reading this post event and the numbers below do not include this year’s event income, we do want to take a moment to share with you the Foundation’s philanthropic achievements to date:
TOTAL FUNDS RAISED AND GIFTED TO DATE:
$1,350,000

$471,000 $375,000 $215,000 $150,000 $20,000 $20,000 $36,000 $63,000
