How many times I’ve already written, re-written, said, re-said, again and again, about the importance of having fun and of friendship while snowboarding? I don’t have a clue. Just countless. Here we go again: I’m writing about it one more time. Never enough. Just because it’s the Olympic season (Yes! One more time it is, and four years since Sochi have already gone by!), with all its contests, the stress, the scores, the points, the rankings, the standings, the tricks, the doubles, the triples, the quads, the qualifications, who’s in and who is not invited to the party, who’s the main favourite for the medals and who’s not, well all these things that gives you that love&hate feeling towards our sport/discipline/hobby/lifestyle/callitwhatyouwant. Well, as soon as you forget all that stuff I’ve just written above, and you go back on board riding with your friends just like the good old times, you figure out that those good old times actually have never really gone by. They come back every time you want to unplug your brain while turning to your board like a 15-year-old boy would do. A new season has just started, and despite this picture who might give you the idea of a springbreak session, we really hope that huge snowfalls are awaiting us and fresh powder will give us once more the opportunity of bringing our own inner kid back.

Right in the middle of Ticino, a Southern region of Switzerland, you can find Aganè, founded some 10 years ago by its owner Mattia Fogliani. After a while he moved on to a new spot in Arbedo, place where you can feel the passion for mountains, seaside and adventure. Everything is built up on three elements: Water, Rocks and Snow - i.e. Surfing, Climbing and Snowboarding. This shop not only offers quality products for these elements, but also wants to be considered as a meeting point for everyone, with a complete service of lessons, camps and missions. Spending beautiful days while climbing in the region, walking up the mounts in search of the best freeriding lines or jumping in the water of the close-by Mediterraneo spots - Aganè is always ready to share the best adventures having fun with friends, respecting and protecting the natural environment which is our playground. Also because of this, we are more and more focussed on our co-operation with Patagonia, brand that has always been committed and attentive to environmental issues, as we are trying to commit ourselves in an eco-friendly business, living our passions with a respectful and responsible consumerism.

TOTO, INTRODUCE YOURSELF. WHO ARE YOU, WHERE ARE YOU FROM AND WHY DID YOU START SNOWBOARDING? Hi, I’m Pietro Cornacchione but everybody calls my Toto. I’m from Riva Valdobbia in Valsesia, Italy, I go to school and I really like fishing and hunting. I started snowboarding when I was 9 because my older brother used to ride and so I wanted to give it a try. WHAT IS SNOWBOARDING TO YOU? Snowboarding is a way of being happy, making me feel free and knowing a lot of people. WHICH RIDER INSPIRES YOU? Alex Oestreng and Danny Davis inspire me, I really like how they interpret snowboarding and they are stylish. I’m really pumped by Torstein Horgmo and his style, and by Nicolas Mueller since I watched Fruition – I liked everything he said about how much we are lucky and so on. WHAT ARE YOU GONNA DO WHEN YOU GROW UP? When I’m older I’d like to become a pro-snowboarder, an expert hunter and a lumberjack. WHAT DO YOU THINK OF SNOWBOARDING AT THE OLYMPICS? Slopestyle is one of the disciplines that I do so I’m happy it has become an Olympic discipline. BAD BOY QUESTION. WHAT PISSES YOU OFF? About snowboarding? When I am not able to pull a stylish trick off.

Many believe that in the past few years freeriding has been the great comeback of the snowboarding industry. After having ridden entire towns, built enormous jumps and huge pipes, finally snowboarding came back to where it belongs. Snowboarding was born in backcountry, and its roots won’t ever be cut. But still, was there anyone who really thought that freeriding would be dead and gone? Everything evolves. Usually we evolve in search of the roots. Even in freeride snowboarding there has been a big evolution. Not happy with just taking a chairlift (or for who’s luckier – an helicopter), we are striving to get back to the past looking ahead into the future. In search for the deepest and pivotal contact with nature and mountains. Through a lot of sweat and hardships, we earn our well-deserved powder. Probably splitboarding was born right there. In the past few years splitboarding gear had a great evolution, and the companies have understood it was not just a market niche, but it was an actual trend of many snowboarders, not only the most mature or nostalgic ones, but also youngsters who are searching for a face-off with nature and themselves. Everything’s in its right place. Beautiful. But to achieve all this, you need to reach a high level of awareness, under different points of view: ourselves, the others and the environment around us. First thing first, we need to be aware of our own technical and physical abilities – we have always have to try out things we know 100% we can achieve, technically and physically. In powder everything gets more difficult, even carving some turns or getting up after a fall. Another crucial point is about gear. The board-bin-

dings-boots trio is the easiest one – almost all snowboard companies have split gear in their line, but don’t forget the avalanche safety gear, which is not at all something you want to miss out on. Anywhere you want to go freeride, even where it looks like the safest place on earth, use all the time the ARTVA, shovel and probe. Without any of these, it’s nonsense for you and for the others around you. Obviously, it should be mandatory to know how to use all this gear. You want to make sure you are capable of using this stuff – so just sign up immediately for some avalanche safety courses. At the moment the market offers us extra-safety systems like backpacks with airbag or inhalator. This is for sure some gear that in some cases would really make the difference but, be aware that it can’t substitute the avalanche safety kit and some trustful powder mates who have to be equally equipped and know all about the rescuing procedures. Another fundamental routine before freeriding anywhere, is consulting the avalanche bulletin regarding the zone or the spot you would like to hit. Don’t underestimate the opinions and the reports of locals. The beauty of freeriding lies in the fact that you can 100% enjoy a true and real natural experience, somewhere you would not have even dreamt of only some time ago. Splitboarding gear’s enhancement of the past few years is the reason why more and more people are taking on adventures and expeditions that not such a long time ago they would have been impossible to organise. Splitboarding allows us to explore, in the most complete sense – ourselves and the environment which we live in: take advantage of it.

The wait is finally over - with two years of development, side by side with Bryan Iguchi and Travis Rice - the Union Splitboard Binding System is here at last! Carrying on Union’s “less is more” product mentality, the Expedition System is ready to ride out of the box, cutting out the confusion of getting yourself into the splitboard game. Considering all the factors that go into a successful splitboard mission, isn’t the ride down the most important? The Expedition Series not only look like traditional Union bindings, they ride like traditional Union bindings. Compared to the rest, the Expedition system features a unique interface that corkscrews your board together and allowing it to perform like a normal board. Less moving parts, simplistic design, and proven materials come together as the next generation of splitboard bindings. With 500,000 turbostratic fibers per square inch, the benefits of Forged Carbon ensure that no power is lost on the skin up or the ride down. This lightweight and durable material is perfectly suited for splitboard binding systems. Unlike complicated binding systems involving a number of moving parts, the Union Split System functions with just one pin. Pull the pin to change modes, push it in to lock the system in place. Simplicity and performance in one package. When it’s time to switch your bindings to climb mode, the most comfortable option is lowering your forward lean adjuster to decrease the highback angle for the ascent. Instead of screws, locks, and complicated

adjustment methods, the Expedition FC features a one-turn adjuster and a quick flip ladder that gets you to the top with minimal effort. X-CARB SP1 BASE: This revolutionary composite contains a very high amount of pre-blended blended carbon, resulting in a super light torsionally rigid baseplate, ideal splitboarding. SYNTHETIC EVA 3.0 BUSHINGS: Shock absorbing synthetic bushings are durable and an outstanding compliment to the smooth, natural ride of the SP1 base. FORGED HEELCUPS: The rigidity and strength of FC Heelcups act like a roll cage on a race car - stiffening the entire chassis. The male/female connection with the base provides a seamless response. SYMMETRIC DURAFLEX HIGHBACKS: This revolutionary composite contains a very high amount of pre-blended blended carbon, resulting in a super light torsionally rigid baseplate, ideal splitboarding. EXOFRAME/AIR ANKLE STRAPS: All new for 17/18, ExoFrame/Air produces strength and rapid response on the outside, fit and pillowed comfort on the inside. MAGNESIUM 2.0 RATCHETS: Four times stronger than aluminum with only half the weight, Union buckles are built to last. The new 2.0 design is ten percent lighter than previous versions.

WHEN AND WHY WAS SANDY SHAPES CREATED? Sandy Shapes was born as a mix of ideas and growing experiences in the snowboarding scene since 1998. It came to life in our first boards. WHERE DOES THE NAME SANDY SHAPES COME FROM? Sandy is my nickname and 99% of my friends, acquaintances and clients knows me by that name… I also think that most of them has no idea my real name is Alessandro! WHAT MAKES YOUR BRAND STAND OUT? Sandy Shapes is different for five important facts: its look which underlines the wooden surfaces, the constantly evolving shapes, the performance thanks to the materials and manufacturing process, the customisable finishes and shapes. TALK ME THROUGH THE MANUFACTURING PROCESS OF A SANDY SHAPES’ BOARD. Our manufacturing philosophy is to create boards that are unique on the market thanks to the harmony of materials, their matching and the way they are glued. Materials’ preparation, especially the CORES/EDGES and bases, are realised with last generation CNC machines to guarantee its replicability. We match woods, fibres and resin in a glueing process with precise temperatures and heating and cooling cycles

to obtain the raw board. From here we refine and get the boards you see on the market. WHAT KIND OF SNOWBOARDERS ARE YOU FOCUSSING ON? We are able to provide a board for any type of rider thanks to our already existing models and the individually customised shapes. Of course freeride and all mountain shapes are the most attractive to people but twin boards have been a revelation. WHAT IS YOUR MARKETING TARGET? Our customers are mature and passionate riders who look for top quality products both in finishes and in performance. We are not a luxury brand but we prefer to be called “high end” that identifies an handicraft made in Italy where the hands of the shaper work on every board to get the most out of these products. WHERE ARE YOUR PRODUCTS DISTRIBUTED? At the moment being, we have about ten dealers around the world, four of them in Italy. We have been on the market since 2012 but it has been only 18 months that we have completed our whole collection and we are now really ready for the market. SNOWBOARDING IS LIVING A CONSTANT AND HECTIC EVOLUTION. A FEW YEARS AGO THERE WAS A STRONG INFLUEN-

CE OF SKATEBOARDING AND MANY RIDERS SHREDDED THROUGH THE CITIES. NOW MOUNTAINEERING AND FREERIDING ARE ON THE RISE. WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT IT? Freeriding is definitely conquering a huge part of winter sports market. I’m glad that this is bringing a new approach more connected to nature but always keeping in mind the importance of safety in the mountains and in freeride. Most of the brands inserts some “exotic” shape models in their line, but to me is more likely a following of the market trends of the moment. There are just few brands that really understand the freeride world and are able to produce models that meet the real needs of freeriders. IN YOUR OPINION WHAT WILL THE FUTURE DIRECTION OF SNOWBOARDING BE? There are surely well defined worlds,

from freeride to splitboard to freestyle boards or park boards for facilities. Sandy Shapes wants to enhance the sense of turning and carving, the taste of snowboarding. Real turns. WHAT ARE THE FUTURE AND UPCOMING PROJECTS OF SANDY SHAPES? We want to enrich our women’s collection but we are mostly focusing on new sizes requested by the American market. New lengths HAVE YOU GOT ANY MESSAGE TO ALL SNOWBOARDERS? Make snowboarding always better... and reach new people because they will be fascinated by it. Snowboarders have always made their identity an argument that distinguished them: we distinguish ourselves by style, elegance, art.

THE ONLY THING THAT SAVED US WAS THE FACT THAT WE WERE YOUNG ENOUGH TO STAND ALL OF IT. After visiting the Interstyle trade show in Tokyo we felt the time was ripe to go shred some powder. Remember the season in Europe was really weak up until then and we were pale from being in the office. Our friend Atsufumi Mizuno had his camper ready to roll in Tokyo. After a quick look into the snow forecast, Stephan Maurer, Aaron Schwartz, Atsu and myself spontaneously decided to make our way up North with only a slight idea of where exactly we were going to end up. Sapporo, Kiroro and Furano were being discussed, but nothing was certain. We boarded what looked like a deserted ferry that could just as well have been the filmset of a creepy horror movie. Needless to say that the pictures on the flyer looked a lot nicer than what we walked onto. After a few hours of ups and downs on deck we set our wobbly sea legs on Hokkaido. The camper was massively overloaded with dogs, board bags, surfboards and just way too much luggage that became a deadly hazard to anyone sitting in the back. Each time we came to a halt, the cargo would shift forward and would nearly crush the backseat passengers. Good thing we are strapping young lads who always held up the weight and we all stayed safe. Outside of the window a snowy landscape was passing by and looking more dreamy by the minute. We started to feel the tingle and our spirits were flying high. Our mantra on trips like this is to have as much fun in deep powder as humanly possible, enjoy it with our friends, all while managing some emails and filming our next edit along the way. Experience has shown that the more we filmed each other “having fun”, the happier we were with the outcome. That’s why our cameras never stand still and always follows us. That way we can all shred, take turns filming each other, and do full laps without stopping until our legs give in. For us it makes more sense to let those magical moments happen naturally, rather than forcing them on film. It’s about staying on the go without a fixed plan, but knowing where we’re heading. At the very least we knew one thing, we were eager to find some face shots. Furano is one of our favourite destinations because it offers many great access points and it’s fairly easy to find good powder runs on and off the resort, as well as by foot. The groomers are mint for carving and the terrain has it all. Also it seems like it hasn’t yet been overrun by foreign tourist like many other Japanese resorts. This means you share the backcountry with very few others, the lift-lines are very short and even the popular runs take some time to get bombed out.

IN THE END IT’S ALL A QUESTION OF BEING PREPARED FOR ANYTHING THAT COULD HAPPEN AND LIVE BY THE DAY, WITHOUT A PLAN BUT JUST A DESTINATION When we arrived, it was every bit as good as we hoped. There was tons of fresh and fluffy snow right off the bat. Long, deep, powerful turns that you exhilarate out of and get barrelled by your own spray. That was our daily business, and business was good! I can vividly remember many whiteout face shots where my brain was eager to hyper-process the location of the trees I had just seen in front of me and were now hidden in the snowcloud and speeding past me. However, to our surprise and very unlikely for Japan, it stopped snowing. This left us to our own devices – our feet and snowshoes to be specific – to hike the amazing backcountry in search of some untracked more hidden good. On our way home one day we ended up in a gully that led out from a bowl back to the resort. Usually these gully’s are a pretty undesirable place to end up in, but this one was different. It was a super banked-out, wavy and speedy trail all along a beautiful riverbed. When we got spat out at the end of it, we looked at each other’s tired yet smiling faces and knew instantly that we would be coming back the following day with fresh legs and the cameras rolling. The Monkey Trail, as we called it, ended up being one of the main spots we frequently revisited to film for the next Yearning For Turning video. After riding we usually took our time to experience some original Japanese mountain town culture by visiting different local places like Cafe Goryo and other cool little places where we enjoyed meeting new people, eating delicious food and drinking the best ginger honey beer we’d ever tasted. During our time in Furano, our friend Funae let us stay in his basic yet pure and cozy place named “Naya Lodge” – a summertime melon farm that doubles as a ski lodge in the winter. The workers from the farm were already starting to clear the snow off of the greenhouses as we were leaving. It seemed a bit early to us, but spring was just around the corner. Japan is obviously one of the best places to ride deep powder, but it is also the place we ran into a new scene and movement with a different approach to snowboarding – one that we personally identify and relate to very strongly. Domo arrigato Japan!

Somebody might not know their names. Yet. We are pretty sure that these dudes here will make their way into the snowboarding world sooner or later. Or they have already done it, and we were not ready for that or distracted by other stories. Anyway, we picked some of the best up-and-coming riders and we fired some random and generic questions to them, just to see their reactions and to test their skills. I remember at one of those historic contests that are no more, it was in Davos and it was New Year’s Eve around 2004, Giacomo Kratter introduced a very young fellow that he knew who was 14 or 15, and I still remember his words: “This guy is already very good at skateboarding but one day he will do great things in snowboarding too. Even better. He’s pure talent.” That boy was Swiss, and his name was Iouri Podladtchikov. Never too late, never too early.

WHAT’S THE FIRST THOUGHT THAT COMES THROUGH YOUR MIND WHEN YOU LAND AN IMPOSSIBLE TRICK? It’s always really rewarding feeling and kind of unreal to land

WHAT DO YOU WANT TO ACHIEVE IN YOUR LIFE? I wanna achieve things that when I look back to them I can be happy that I did them and don’t need to think that “shit I should have done this and that but never done them because someone said you that it’s not right”.

With the trends of carving and backcountry riding coming back into the limelight, street riders are trying to prove that urban riding still has a weight in the industry and they are doing this by mixing up the riding and pushing the boundaries of what was thought possible on urban features. It is in fact a very interesting time in street riding with a very big dose of creativity that is being brought into the scene by riders all over the world. Some riders are hitting spots that were previously unconceivable, others are linking up tricks to mix the creativity and others are unstrapping their bindings to push the boundaries, just like Antti Jussila here, kicking out a progressive ollie north off an urban booter.

A few years ago street riders were focusing mainly on standard handrails, while nowadays it’s hard to find any rails in many video parts as riders have started to get creative and really explore the urban landscape, taking into consideration ledges, wallrides, pole jams, roof gaps and more, all heavily influenced by the skateboarding scene. As the tricks have become more and more skate-influenced, so has the filming of these tricks. Instead of just sitting under the rail with a fish-eye lens, filmers have been stepping up their game by follow-caming the riders on their boards, while the riders have been linking up multiple tricks in one single line, adding an even more skate style to their video parts. This has helped street riding stay interesting, with a good mix of rails and other obstacles in their lines, riders can really show off their imagination and creativity.

ANTTI JUSSILA

Street riding really is intriguing for most of us. How come you spend that much time in the city while you could be in the mountain reconnecting with the elements ? It’s fucking stupid, if you ask me. But what if you grew up in Helsinki, Quebec or Moscow? What if snowboarding in the street is just as natural for you as playing in your backyard? What if snowboarding is just a wide range of people, backgrounds, tastes, environments, spots and so on? With huge cities and tons of snow, Russia is a promising playground for those able to reinterpret the urban environment. The country-continent is a world in itself. A pretty unique one to be honest considering its own alphabet, strong historical heritage, cold and stormy climate, plus an endless list of persistent “clichés” that stick deeply to this “exotic” destination. That was enough for our crew to pass the eastern border and judge by ourselves. When you spend 12 hours a day in the street, you get to experiment the Russian vibe even if it’s hard to understand what’s really going on over there. I have to say that I’ve been wondering a lot of times “WTF are we doing here!” Pulling dead dog out of the in run or signing papers in a Russian police station... and not to

mention that I wasn’t the one bailing in the landing after multiple attempts. It’s crazy to observe the team efforts and those guys willingness to get something as trivial as photos or a video clip for their movie section. Novosibirsk, in Siberia, also called the “sleeping land”, is the thirdmost populous city in Russia after Moscow and St. Petersburg, with a population of 1,602,915. The Trans-Siberian Railway fuelled much of the city’s 19th-century growth. But for us it was obviously just full of sick street spots so we just headed there with a bunch of Euros dumbasses to get fed up by the Siberian vibe. Considering it’s called Siberia, it must be very very cold so we all packed like we were leaving for a crazy expedition in Antarctica. Snowboarding is nice, but a little history background won’t hurt anyone, right? At 7:15 a.m. on 30 June 1908, millions of trees fell near the Podkamennaya Tunguska (Stony Tunguska) River in central Siberia in the Tunguska Event. Most scientists believe this resulted from the air burst of a meteor or a comet. Even though no crater has ever been found, the landscape in the (uninhabited) area still bears the scars of this event. In the early decades of the Soviet Union (especially the 1930s and 1940s),

the government established the GULAG state agency to administer a system of penal labour camps, replacing the previous katorga system. According to semi-official Soviet estimates, which were not made public until after the fall of the Soviet government, from 1929 to 1953 more than 14 million people passed through these camps and prisons, many of which were in Siberia. Another 7 to 8 million people were internally deported to remote areas of the Soviet Union (including entire nationalities or ethnicities in several cases). Half a million prisoners died in camps from 1941 to 1943 due to food shortages caused by World War II. At other periods, mortality was comparatively lower. The size, scope, and scale of the GULAG slave labour camps remains a subject of much research and debate. Many Gulag camps were positioned in extremely remote areas of northeastern Siberia. The best known clusters are Sevvostlag (The North-East Camps) along the Kolyma River and Norillag near Norilsk, where 69,000 prisoners were kept in 1952. Major industrial cities of Nor-

thern Siberia, such as Norilsk and Magadan, developed from camps built by prisoners and run by ex-prisoners. Talking about Snowboarding again, from day one we had already so many complications with local people that at some point of the trip it almost started to feel like it’s impossible to manage more tricks after getting kicked out from pretty much everywhere we went. We arrived to the first spot with Will Smith eyeing up a bad-boy of a line. Good hour of shovelling and ice breaking but got busted just as we finished building... Standard. The dude was reasonable so we packed up and left. Onto the next spot, a super sick wallride in a university with minimal building and looked a lot of fun. We bring the winch and all gear over the fence, Will had ONE go then security come out. The two that came out first were kinda pussy compared to the big fucker that followed. This dude the size of King Kong comes over, angry as hell and without any warning grabs Postland Theory’s Tim Schiphorst camera, then out of nowhere the big fucker headbutts Tim

square in the nose. We hear POP, blood comes spewing out of his face. We all run over screaming out faces off at this fat, lowlife, corrupt, criminal mother f**ker. What could we do? Fight the guy? In Russia? Not today boys... Onto the next spot. Everyone is pissed off but the crew is staying tight. Another few hours before we arrived at a fairly sized waterfall rail. Situated walking distance from one of Novosibirsk better known “City Slopes” which worked well, we thought, as passers-by were stoked to see snowboarders riding the streets. All was good until this lady was the most persistent to have us not ride the spot I’ve ever seen. First she’s not happy with us riding on “her” building, so she stands on the kicker or as she called it “a trampoline”, a good 20 mins of this. Then she calls security. They arrive calmly and we discuss the situation, so they actually let us continue riding simply saying there is no problem here. She didn’t like this! Having her power trampled on by security, but she still didn’t move, next up, call the police. They arrive and believe it or not they were also ok with us hitting the rail. So here we are, with local pedestrians, police and security all keen for Benny to ride and just one lady standing in the way. She didn’t budge,

night falls, we left... Buuut he got the shot already and that saved the day. So we got kicked out of three spots in one day, our filmer got a broken nose, we got one shot. That’s seven people, 12 hours of trying, three different locations, all for one shot on film... Was it worth it ? Of course. At the train station, one rough guy tried to kick us out, but after we payed him two packs of ciggies (two euros) he gave us a permission to stay there for few hours. But than another guy showed up in the in-run yelling he was the big boss came and of course asked for more money. So we had to pay five more euros. Pretty cheap actually if you can have the spot quiet for couple hours to just focus on the tricks. We could just keep going with similar stories like the previous ones. Probably for the first time in my life I could feel a sort of racism or nationalism against us. Feelings and words were sometimes really tough and rude, such as “go back to your fucking country”, “you have nothing to do here”. But still, it was very special for us to get to know Russia a little better, kill our clichés (or not). Siberia has been challenging, definitively not as smooth as a walk in the park. A lot of ups and downs, but at the end, just a unique experience and memories maker.

HEY WILL, HOW WAS FILMING THE FRESH PRINCE OF BEL AIR? OK, DUMB JOKE I KNOW. BACK TO BUSINESS... TALK US THROUGH YOUR SNOWBOARDING CAREER... I WAS JUST NOTICING: HOW COME A GUY FROM A PLACE WITH NO MOUNTAINS AT ALL CAN COME UP WITH BEING SUCH A TRICK-MACHINE? Yeah not having mountains or snow definitely makes things difficult to get started with snowboarding. When I started there was only one indoor dome in Tamworth. The rest of snowboarding in the UK was done on snowflex or dendex. It wasn’t too bad for me because I lived really close to a dry ski slope and I am lucky to have parents that supported me and took me there probably something like 5 days a week for the first 2-3 years of snowboarding. Also where I grew up is actually pretty high in elevation so it gets a few inches of snow almost every year for a couple of days but nothing lasts.

SO DRYSLOPES AND SNOW DOMES ARE PERFECT TO FINE-TUNE RAIL SKILLS THEN? I think to be able to ride dry slope well, you need to be able to have really good edge control to turn properly and you can actually hold and edge. It also gives you the best technique for riding jumps, I think you see that with most uk guys that came from dry slope they all have the most pop and everyone leaves the lip straight. None of that pre carving shit haha. I grew up riding with Jamie Nicholls and Andy Nudds and Matt Macwhirter and tons more but those guys all have amazing pop on jumps and they can all spin frontside off their toes like you’ve never seen. As for rails we had one yellow pretty long gas pipe with a ride on wedge ramp that would move sometimes so it wasn’t great really for it. The indoors are definitely good for just learning as many tricks as you can on rails though. Saying that I feel like you loose the side of learning to ride you snowboard properly. I see kids in the dome that can do as many tricks as you could imagine but take them to a mountain and they can’t shred fast and blast about. You can really tell when somebody knows how to ride their board proper.

IS THAT WHY YOU GOT BETTER AND BETTER IN STREET? I wouldn’t say it’s down to that, but riding the dry slope conditions definitely help for the sketchy in runs and not enough speed type things and I guess it’s just making do with what you’ve got really. It’s just snowboarding except in a street its still on snow (most of the time haha) so that’s a bonus for me being on real snow outside not in a fridge. WHAT IS THE COOLEST THING ABOUT BEING A STREET RIDER AND WHAT IS THE DOWNSIDE OF IT? The coolest part for me is that when you film a video part you choose your own spot, you choose your own tricks and you can really express snowboarding in the way that you want to, with some hard work and patience looking for the right spots you can build up your part through the winter. It’s great but there is definitely a downside to it, I don’t really get to go snowboarding too much on a mountain but I tried this year to make sure the spots I hit had a bit more board on snow time than just 10m in run rail stop walk back up do it again. The rest of the downsides are the obvious things like getting kicked out of spots where its so unnecessary, rain, the lack of snow on a trip makes things really difficult but we always come out with something. At the end of the day when you check the shots and you or your homie got clips it is worth it. It’s a team thing it’s definitely not down to one person. We all make each others video parts happen from the riders to the filmers and photographers.

WHAT’S BEEN YOUR BEST SNOWBOARDING TRIP SO FAR? That’s hard productivity wise and with the most fun was probably the Japan trip with the First Layer project last year, everything just seemed to work out perfect good snow at spots we wanted to hit, the best guide and an incredible crew. It wasn’t stressed at all but we came out with a lot of big stuff and cool stuff too. This winter though I went to Isalmi Finland before Christmas with Postland and there

was me, Cees Wille, Simon Hound, Artem Smolin and our filmer Tim, we got like 2 shots a day every day of the trip almost ,I think and we there for 10 days but we got some of the best shots in the movie that trip.

NAME THREE RIDERS YOU’VE ALWAYS LOOKED UP TO WHEN YOU GREW UP AND OTHER THREE YOU STILL LIKE NOW. There are 3 main obvious ones for me would have to be: Keegan Valaika, Alex Stathis, Louif Paradis, but then there are so many other guys Jake OE, Jed Anderson, Danimals, Jake Kuzyk but there is so many incredible snowboarders out there, too many to name. I really like seeing how Louif approach has changed every video part he puts out, he is a genius. The spots he see’s and the thing he comes up with are amazing. He’s got a good eye for spots and trick selection! Keegan and Stathis are who I watch on repeat when I was younger. I still get really hyped to see new clips of those guys. Also anyone I have seen snowboard from Minnesota is a beast!

ANYONE YOU ESPECIALLY LIKE OR YOU ARE COMPLETELY NUMB ABOUT IT? I will watch it if I am watching the olympics but it isn’t something I thing I will go out of my way to watch. What they do is insane and I wouldn’t be able to do that shit, I don’t do good upside down so fair play to those guys chucking them selves off those massive jumps. It just doesn’t appeal to me so I don’t really have an opinion on it, keep on hooking for all I care haha.

WITH SO MUCH BUDGET AND COST CUTS, I GUESS IT’S PRETTY COOL TO BE BACKED BY SOME HISTORIC COMPANIES LIKE VANS: HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT IT? DO YOU ALSO FEEL A BIT OF PRESSURE OF RIDING FOR SUCH A BRAND? Honestly I don’t say this be-

WHERE’S CORE URBAN SNOWBOARDING GOING IN YOUR OPINION? I honestly don’t have any idea. I try to not get wrapped up in the politics

cause I have to, I genuinely love Vans I think the company is awesome, the people who are involved are all such good people and it really is a family vibe. I’ve been on Vans since I was 16 and appreciate all the support they’ve given me over the years. No I don’t really feel pressure in general from riding for Vans, when I first moved onto the European team and went on the first trip to Finland I definitely felt pressure then, that I needed to impress the team manager Bruno Rivioure and photographer Matt Georges. But that isn’t a bad thing, now I feel like we just work together riders and Bruno, if we are slacking we for sure get told haha. We’ve got a really good team going in Europe right now and that also makes the team trips better when everyone gets along and has a similar mindset.

of it all. I just enjoy riding my snowboard with my friends and trying to film things to the best of my ability. Everyones entitled to do what ever they like with snowboarding.

WHAT’S UP FOR YOU IN THE NEXT FUTURE, WHAT ARE YOUR NEXT PROJECTS? Right now everything is still a bit up in the air but I am going to be

PIC: MATT GEORGES TXT: GIACOMO MARGUTTI

We started the new season off with this issue whose cover portrays two riders who walk in the fresh snow and leave traces behind. Those steps mean all their passion, their love and respect for their mountain. That board they are carrying is the tool through which they will find happiness one more time, even on that particular day. We end this issue with other steps, on the fresh snow again. Do you remember that day when you waited inside the bar for the bad weather and the sky to clear up and then you just gave up, you went outside, you stepped into the fresh new snow and you fell in love again with winter? To hell the cold, the elements and all the other stuff normal people complain about during days like those. We just hope there will be a lot of days like those this season, days when you sip the last coffee of the morning, you walk outside and step into the fresh snow, you eat a bit of it when you stay mouth open and new flakes come down straight from the sky, and you bless the moment in which you woke up to face your new mission. Nice, right?
