OBELIX

FERRA AIMEE FULLER SIGNATURE

3.HONEY RYDER

According to Nicholas Wolken and his mates, this very original board has been in their minds since Korua’s birth. Surely the ovaloid shape surprises many and makes us re-think of all the theories related to design as it’s been conceived until today. Actually, the riding experience of the Obelix wants to be totally different from the one of a classic shape. The original shape combined with the continuous negative camber make it a smooth and pleasant ride. Surely it can not be missed in the quiver of a fresh snow lover or a true collector.

Vans has created a signature version of their famous Ferra model for the English rider Aimee Fuller. The Ferra is a boot that combines the classic lacing of the outer hull with the BOA Hybrid Plus System for the inner shoe. Other technologies used in this boot design are the Reach Around Cuff Strap, which can be fixed internally to the liner or externally on the hull, for a chance to further customize the fit. Together with the Response Liner inner boot and the Ultracush V2 insole, this boot is perfect for all terrains.

“Nicolas lives his life just likes his type of riding smooth and sweet. He always makes sure that everyone around him gets some good positive vibes “. This is how Silvano Zeiter, a world-renowned photographer, describes Nicolas Müller. Silvano has accompanied Nicolas in the last four years of his travels around the world. Honey Ryder is a collection of portraits, landscapes and actions shots that describe that unique creature that is Nicolas Müller. The book is available at all points of sale in the Swiss Doodah.ch chain and on www.silvanozeiter.com.

DIY

The concept behind Opkix, the world’s smallest smartphone-compatible camera, was born in Mammoth Mountain during a snowboarding day. Opkix will be launched in April 2018 but the turmoil behind its release is remarkable. It can be wireless or wired, and connects to your smartphone like a charger. A special app allows sharing via social media and a feature for augmented reality is also available. The camera can be carried in the palm of a hand and can be attached to your goggle or wherever you prefer.

James Brand was born in Portland, Oregon, in 2012 by a group of designers and outdoor enthusiasts, looking for something special and unique. All James knives are built with high quality materials, with a minimal design and a maniacal attention to detail. The Folsom is their interpretation of the Liner Lock Knife, with stainless steel blade Carpenter CTS-BD1 and casing in G10 with ambidextrous opening: the knife you’ll always have in your pocket. James is already available in Europe and has a good team of ambassadors: Victor Daviet, Gigi Ruff, Mikkel Bang and Tyler Chorlton.

What’s better than shaping yourself your board for white powder days? Burton offers this DYI Throwback snowboard which is nothing but a sheet made of certified FSC wood, fiberglass and extruded p-tex base. Take the hacksaw and shape it you like best and then ride down the slopes just like the snowboard pioneers! Be aware that not having edges nor bindings, you can’t use it in ski resorts but it will be for sure a new and adventurous experience to add to your bucket list of things to do before you die!

3.LOBSTER EIKI PRO REAPER BY SCHOPH

Union Custom House presents the collaboration with Positivity Camp. Located at 3,000 meters above sea level in Alta Val Formazza, and only reachable within three hours of walking. The proceeds are used by the Mato Grosso association in their South America missions where schools, hospitals, refuges and Andean bivouacs are built. The binding is based on the MD with a reduced surface and the Asym S2 Highback with zero forward lean: a perfect binding for every form of freestyle riding.

The Lashed is the best-selling boot in the world - this is a fact. This is because it is comfortable, functional, aesthetically more beautiful than a skate sneaker and especially suitable for any terrain, from powder to park. In this version with the kings of snowboard grip Crab Grab, the Lashed is even more beautiful! In the characteristic “lobster” color and with the claws reproduced in the ankle joint to keep the laces in tension, this boot is also perfect for the red carpet! This time you will not be disfigured if you pass by Pharrell!

The Helgason brothers have accustomed us to late releases. And this year too with this version of the pro model of Eiki, born to grind jibs in the street or park and characterized by squared tips, which are very 90s. Schoph is an artist from the north of England and is one of the custodians of the disowned nature of snowboarding. His hand has signed many designs for famous brands in the snowboard environment such as Mervin, Dragon and Elm. When he’s not making snowboard designs, he’s around the world showing off his incredible installations.

5.RIDE RODEO BINDINGS X HCSC CAMP

6.GIRO BLOK GOGGLE X SUB POP RECORDS

Mike Akira West loves collaborations, so he didn’t want to miss a good match with the beer preferred by snowboarders for sure. The collab with Pabst Blue Ribbon does not stop at the aesthetic details, adopting the characteristic blue in the external livery, with the filigree logo in the inner lining and the logo next to the 686 on the sleeve, but it has pushed up to create compartments specifically designed for storing an unlimited number of cans: on the chest, in the front pockets, inside and behind!

The Rodeo is perhaps one of the most appreciated bindings models from the Ride team. High Cascade is the most legendary summer snowboard camp in America, which has been making talents on the slopes of Mt.Hood volcano for decades. The aluminum infinity chassis has a reduced foot plant, which together with the micro forged disk have a negligible influence in the natural flex of the table, while the freestyle Asym Ankle strap and the Wedgie Footbed keep the foot in the correct position without straining the knee, thanks to the canting. The highback is customized with the acronym of the HCSC camp.

If you consider yourself a music expert and lover you can not know the legendary Seattle Sub Pop label: it was the cradle for bands like Nirvana, Shins, Iron and Wine, Shins and Wolf Parade. The Blok instead is a retro-style mask that hides an impressive technology. It is versatile and combines a wide EXV field of view with the optical precision of the cylindrical lens by Zeiss. Giro has combined the two ingredients and what came out is an absolute delicacy that smells of style.

NICHE SNOWBOARDS ASSIEME A CONNORA TECHNOLOGIES PER UNO SNOWBOARD MANUFACTURING AD IMPATTO ZERO. “Recyclamine: A Zero Waste Manufacturing Solution” is a mini documentary, produced by Lux Nova, that Niche Snowboards has created in collaboration with Connora Technologies to illustrate a new generation of totally recyclable materials with a constant level of performance over time. Since its creation, Niche has always focused on sustainable production through the use of recyclable materials: with this new technology, both the production process and the board itself will be totally recyclable.

BURTON SUSTAINABILIT Y GOALS PER IL 2020 Burton is proud to announce officially new ambitious sustainability goals, committing to reach them by the year 2020. The new goals reinforce Burton’s current efforts for better sustainability. Here are some of the goals: all Burton softgoods will use 100% bluesign approved materials, all Burton factories will reduce carbon emissions by 20% in the production of hardgoods, 20% carbon dioxide reduction and 75% deviation of landfill waste in global headquarters; finally, there will be the introduction of an end-of-life products program at retailers.

PICTURE ED IL SUO COSTANTE IMPEGNO PER UN OUTERWEAR SOSTENIBILE If there is a company that since its birth has pointed sustainability as a fundamental principle in the development of its products, this is just Picture. Their latest initiative goes far beyond sustainable production: it is a partnership with WWF, focused on three specific projects - a mission for tracking narwhals in Canada, whales in Norway and the study of the living conditions of polar bears on the Russian Arctic islands. This collaboration has become a capsule collection of clothes that will help the WWF in their crusade defending the world wildlife.

LAAX GREEN STYLE Laax is an absolutely progressive resort – and this is not new. Voted as the best freestyle resort in the world, Laax also cares about the environment and its protection, to the point of establishing a program (Green Style) and even a non-profit foundation called Green Style Foundation. Green Style lives on donations: all Laax employees donate a small part of their salary each month to this association. The aim of Green Style is to protect the environment by financing the reduction of emissions, the use of increasingly green technologies and contrasting the effects of global warming. For some time now Laax has put in place initiatives such as separate waste collection and the use of alternative energies, such as hydroelectric and photovoltaic, to power most of the resort’s facilities.

CAPITA NEO SL ASHER The Capita Neo Slasher is a board that already promotes sustainable snowboarding - being a splitboard. And in fact it is not just a snowboard, but as stated in the description of the model itself, a conscious choice to live a more intimate relationship with the mountains and the snow, also avoiding energy consumption for the lifts, which often turns into pollution. Then, if you consider that the Neo Slasher is produced at the new Mothership, the snowboards factory that Capita wanted at all costs to achieve with minimal environmental impact, we are at the maximum of sustainability. The Mothership, apart from using recycled and low-pollution materials, is powered entirely by renewable energy. Better than this...

BAD BOY : ALEX LOTORTO ITW: DENIS PICCOLO PIC: FIZZA

What will you do when you grow up? I would like to become a international pro-rider, and then I think I will try to stay in the scene with getting a good job in the snowboarding industry.

Hello, I’m Alex Lotorto and I’m 13, I come from Gallarate (VA) and I snowboard. I started snowboarding when I was five and a half years old because I saw some guys ride a rail in front of the snowboard school in Courmayeur, so I wanted to try it because it looked really cool.

What do you think about snowboarding at the Olympics? I think the level of riding at the Olympics is very high, riders are getting younger and younger and the tricks more and more difficult. Just like every athlete in the world, it’s always been my dream to participate.

What is snowboarding for you? To me snowboarding is everything, it’s a lifestyle! Which nowadays rider you look up to and which legend of the past? I would say I look up to Sébastien Toutant, a Canadian rider I like because he is very technical in nailing his tricks. As for the legend from the past I do not know... there are so many that I find it difficult to pick one. Let’s say Terje Haakonsen because I love the backside air as a grab.

What makes you pissed off ? When I snowboard usually I never get pissed off, apart from when sometimes I try a trick a thousand times but I can’t land it. Off the board I get pissed off when I lose at the Playstation. 30

BRAND

ALZELA When and why did you get the idea of creating Alzela? Alzela was born about two years ago from the passion and desire to create a 100% made in Italy product, with the care and research of technical details and the added value of a handmade production, as it was done up to 15 years ago in Italy. Idea, brand, patents, design, design and development, manufacture, production, quality control, certifications and sales. It is the result of 30 years of experience as a designer and planner (Yoda Design) of different items for national and international brands ranging from motorcycle helmets, skis, horse riding (Kiwi, Nava, Airoh, Caberg, Dainese, Uvex, Hjc, Jin Stirrup...) to articles of early childhood (Graco, Monbebè, Ok Baby, Cam) and various other products. From Don Quixote (my nickname now) I finally wanted to create a product with high safety and quality parameters with approved certifications and to distinguish myself in the world for uniqueness, taste and creativity with the inimitable Italian taste, the addition of the seams made by hand and completely produced and distributed in Italy. The big difference is right here, in a time when big brands, manufacturers and sellers distribute products made and produced in several other countries with suspicious quality assurances and suspicious certifications approved. Where is it born and what does the name Alzela mean? The choice of the Alzela brand comes from the historical name given to the Rustico (my residence) located in the Valle Brembana (province of Bergamo), near the historic village of Cornello del Tasso. Alzela was a meeting point and exchange of different cultures, and for this reason I liked the idea of using this name. The brand is therefore born from my long history of design with the originality of the style acquired with sensitivity and experience. What differentiates your goggle from others? We are a brand that today is born presenting the techno fashion goggle, made with high safety and quality parameters. The positioning in terms of price is justified by these peculiarities. Our goggle fascinates at first glance, but it must also be told and tested. Design and quality come together to create an accessory that will become a real trend object. Our goggle can be considered as a “technical accessory” for some sports and / or recreational segments (motorcycling, skiing, snowboarding, cycling, outdoor, sailing, golf, paragliding...) thanks to the parameters of safety and protection that characterize it, but it also becomes a practical and elegant accessory to show and wear on several occasions, even at the wheel of your own cabriolet! All 100% produced and assembled in Italy. 100% made in Italy: why this choice? I would like to specify the additional and declared value of “100% made in Italy” since those who declare the “made in Italy” only hide the reality without guaranteeing the actual production of the product (including materials and manufacture) completely realized in Italy is a very important point in my opinion, because it is the only certifi-

cation (100%) that really allows us to guarantee the entire production cycle. Materials of the highest quality and certifications almost beyond all limits, tell us a bit about this. The double lenses are of the highest quality and exceed all the required approvals and with the laboratory certifications I find it absolutely important to guarantee the customer safety during use. The test test of the projectile that simulates the violent impact with a stone, insect or other, ensures the complete sealing of the double lens up to a speed of 230 km/h and the test of the cylinder ensures that the double lens must not disengage from the frame in case of impact with a branch (also other) or in case of a fall. The frame is printed with an exclusive material used in the medical field and in addition to the qualities of great elasticity and shock absorption, has the characteristic of being a completely anti-allergic material. It is not specially painted to avoid losing this important feature. Regarding the fashion choice, I have done the impossible to make sure that each goggle is unique and linked to the different personality for each person. The various leathers, fabrics and more in microfiber are purchased with reduced quantities, just to be virtually unique and then numbered with its own serial number. The seams vary with different colors and designs depending on our taste and fashion and are hand-made by very entrusted and experienced people. The original lens protection is a very original, functional and practical accessory. It protects the double lens during rest, but above all you avoid damaging it or dirtying it by placing it in the pocket of your jacket or placing it on the bar table during a break. It’s also interesting this chip inserted in the google to ensure its authenticity. Each goggle has its own serial number sewn on an internal label that represents its exclusivity, but the originality is also represented by a built-in microcip, which allows you to connect directly to the specific page of the Alzela site, for registration (just serial number) and directly receive the certificate of authenticity of the purchased form that is registered to you and then with a guarantee document. What kind of snowboarder your goggle is addressed to? This is a world where originality is not lacking, and so I think and I hope that everyone can express themselves by meeting their taste. My goggle does not lack in the technical characteristics indeed, and therefore every snowboarder will find the one that best suits his character or style. Where can you buy your goggles? Momentarily in Italy I still have a few shops where to find my goggles, but you can easily order them directly on the website www.alzela.com. You will also find all the technical features and all the other details that I have not listed in my answers. Thank you and I would like to clarify that my codeword is respect, and so I will also be available to respond to further information and respond directly on the guarantees of the Alzela Goggle.

TECH

LIVING LINING Living Lining, the new tech developed by Burton and used in their softgood line, is a three-layer system of fully integrated outerwear materials.

Innovations in outerwear technology are changing the way we stay warm and dry. Comfort relies on versatility, which brings us to Burton’s new Living Lining thermo regulating technology. But what’s thermo regulation? It’s a technology built into a jacket that allows your body to stay comfortable, even when temperatures outside are constantly in flux. Living Lining, found in all Burton outerwear, works within a three-layer system (also found in 2-layer and shell outerwear), reacting to your body heat for regulated comfort. Here’s how it works. As your body temperature changes, Living Lining kicks into action.

The first layer: a waterproof shell keeps the elements out while releasing internal moisture to keep you dry. The second layer: breathable insulation keeps you warm and works with the smart fibers to vent heat-robbing moisture. The third layer: smart fibers open as your body warms up to increase breathability, and contract as you cool down to trap heat, maintaining comfort. Ultimate adaptability for maximum comfort: you will not find a more comfortable jacket with this much performance, keeping you warm and dry while enjoying the outdoors.

How and when did you come up with the idea of opening a Burton Store in Milan? About six years ago, to meet the need of having in Milan an official point of reference for the snowboard market, in order to support the consumer at 360 degrees. Trends in the modern snowboard market? We got to mention the revolutionary innovation of this year’s Burton collection: the Step On, the new fastest and most intuitive boot-attack interface ever developed, which offers unprecedented comfort and performance thanks to an incredibly simple system and sure. An important sign to everyone that the industry in our scene is not over, as it’s still on its innovation and progression path. What kind of activities do you offer for your customers? We try to fully satisfy the needs of our consumers, offering specific clinics for the different customer targets, tests ride on the snow, to check out the latest products of the collection, and direct assistance in case of doubts or perplexities about the product to be purchased.

Pros and cons of a snowboard shop and an online shop? Online sales are increasingly gaining ground in all product sectors, but we still believe in direct contact with the end users, which is essential to show all new technologies and product innovations in the pre-purchase phase. An in-store purchase followed by extremely skilled staff makes it possible to bring home the right equipment for everyone’s needs. You often organise events in your shop, how important are they to bring consumers closer to the snowboarding world? As well as in-store sales, the events too create a more direct relationship with the final consumer, and in a certain sense they improve this sense of fidelity and trust between us and the riders out there. The store becomes a reference point also thanks to these events, not only for the “technical” aspect but also for the more “playful” aspect. What does the word “snowboard” mean to you? For us it means first of all passion. We are snowboarders and we work with the same passion with which we live the mountain in our free time.

BY DENIS PICCOLO

SWISS SHOP

ORCA SHOP Address: via C. Ghiringhelli 20A, Bellinzona Since: 2016 Phone: +41 76 693 77 46 Mail: orcasnowshop@gmail.com Web: orcasnow.ch Facebook: Orca Snow

What was the motivation that led you to open a snowboard shop? The passion for this sport and the fact that in our region the shops are still stuck on three very famous brands for years, but if you look at all over Europe and being homies in Laax snowpark you realize that there are several other brands to be offered to customers. We have the ambition to become the most core online snowboard shop in Europe. We started well in Switzerland, several freestylers already know and consider us and come to buy from us, thanks also of our politics and our mission of “selling happiness”.

What activities do you propose as a store? From riding every weekend through our favorite playgrounds, in the wood park to (if that’s the case like this year) riding some powder line that is good for the soul and the heart and that increases the pleasure of being in nature with the people you love to do what you like best. Physical snowboard shop VS. Virtual Shop. What is your position? We initially focused our offer only on the online, but at some point, the need came from customers to have a showroom where to show products, it is a tactile factor - potential customers are interested in the web, contact us, they come and try, touch, smell, and at the end, if they are satisfied, they buy.

What are the next snowboarding trends? Surely the big brands want to focus on reinterpretations of inventions of the past, but I believe that the real trend of the last five years is the street, where the world of snowboarding merges with the most daily skateboarding: the want to slide on everything we can imagine it is slidable. On the other side in one year of exceptional snow-making like this, you get out with your powder board and all its ancestors and descendants, from surfboard to all that you can have at your feet and that floats with more disparate shapes.

Your top 5 brands? Technine, Ride, 1817, DWD and Switchback Bindings, but a brand has amazed us in particular, not by volume of business, but because it is a great comeback is the “Sims” produced by Neversummer, with excellent quality, it’s a “tank”, indestructible, and of great manufacture, and also the “oldschool” design is a real gem! 41

FOOTPRINT Powdersurfing, meaning riding without bindings, is spreading fast and Footprint Powdersurfs are at the forefront of the trend, with wooden boards and leg powered hikes this is truly “back to the roots”.

LORENZO BOUTALL IN GRESSONEY

How did you start Footprint? Wht did you decide to create a Powdersurfing brand? In 2013 we built a board in our cellar, to try it out, it worked much better than we imagined and we had tuns of fun! Since then we’ve been making and riding different Powdersurfs, trying out different shapes and concaves. When some guys started to ask us boards, we decided to make our own brand. What’s the differnce between powdersurfing and snowboarding? No bindings and free ankles give you a much wider range of movement, delivering a surfy-skatey feel to your ride. Being untied from the board gives you a new speed sensation and lets you hit features in a whole new way. You claim that all your boards are “handmade” is this true? Where does the production take place? All our boards are hand-shaped in Turin or in Gressoney, depending on powder conditions! We took hand-making pretty seriously and we personally shape by hand, one by one, the rails and the channels of all our boards. Making all the construction process by our selves and having a direct contact with the riders is what we love most.

How many boards make up your “quiver”? 3 Originals, tested shapes with medium measures that are great for most riders and different conditions. We also make One-Offs, unique boards with singular shapes, dimensions, graphics and though for more demanding riders. These are coming out continuously, so stay tuned! And if someone is looking for a custom shape? An important part of our brand is the creation of Custom boards, made for a specific rider, considering his weight, height, foot size and tipe of terrain preferred. You can choose between many shapes of noses and tails, but we also like to work directly with riders to create innovative shapes. As you are also core riders, where are the best spots in Italy for powdersurfing? The cool thing about Powdersurfing is that any slope can be a spot, you just need some powder! We usually ride in Gressoney, but also La Thuile and Cheneil are great places if you are looking for powder, with protected faces and roads that reach high altitudes. We also found good conditions in Ceresole, Valgrisanche, Val di Susa and Limone Piemonte. Anyways we are always looking for the best conditions, new spots and hyped friends to ride with!

HIGHFIVES AND HANDSHAKES

SEQUENCE THE MOVIE Hi Denis, talk us through the Sequence Movie. After DVP’s Broken Circuit and Gimme Some by Random, there was no longer a video project on the Italian scene. Sequence is now an European reality, strong and well-established, so it seemed like the right time to create a snowboard movie that would give visibility to Italian riders in Europe. Why haven’t no more Made in Italy videos been produced for so many years now? One might think of budgets, that have been less and less in snowboarding, but it would be too simplistic and reductive. I think above all that social media in first and cheaper video equipment all have led to an endless series of self-produced clips (often by the same riders) and consequently to a general collapse of the quality of filming. So I would say that many videos are produced, but cheap and low-level and con-

veyed only on social media, where they get lost in the ocean of posts that are published every day without any selection. What do you expect from this project? Let’s start by saying that we have come out of a really difficult season for snowboarding especially for the Italian market; the brands have literally cut the media and marketing budgets. Off this crisis, we were able to find the stimulus to strengthen and grow; our products have all been maintained: Sequence Diary, Sequence Magazine, Fifth Season buyers guide, as well as the web part with www.sequence-magazine.com and our social networks. In addition we have translated our products into English and entered the European scene, which we are receiving excellent feedback from. So now, with the utmost respect for everyone, we want to create the first Sequence Movie: I’m sure our brand partners will be ready to support us.

EMILIANO LAUZI IN SIUSI

What feedback did you get from the scene and from the brands? The riders we’ve contacted so far are more than enthusiastic, now that they can have those who take care of the shooting and can only focus on riding. I have contacted several filmers whom we will work with during this epic season. I take this opportunity to thank them: Scotty Stephenson, Lorenzo Fizza Verdinelli, Giorgio Nobili, Kevin Kok, Achille Mauri, Gianfranco Bruce Battaglia and others. The layout will be edited by our historical designer George Boutall and his studio Evergreen Design House, in order to maintain the Sequence style and appeal.

Do you already have a rider list? Of course there is – all has started from the boys of the Italian national team and their coach and my friend Filippo Kratter, together with them we decided to undertake this project. But we have not precluded anyone: the invitation is extended to all the other riders, of any level, sponsored by brand partners or not. So when do we start? It actually already started the day before yesterday... given the heavy snowfall of the past few days, we have already started filming at the same time with two crews: one in Sestriere and one in Seiser Alm. And now we are moving on to Laax. You told me about a totally open video section, where anyone can have his moment of glory... Yes, we will open a special window in the video where we will insert the best footage and the craziest bails among all those who will send us their footage at the editorial office. There is room for everyone!

Ok let’s talk more specifically about the project. We want to do simple things, without too much philosophy. Our goal is to create a snowboard movie, where what matters is riding, not life stories. Each rider will have his part more or less long depending on the material made and quality: this is what you have to expect. This does not mean that we will neglect photography or production: those who know us, they know very well how maniacal we are with quality... but I do not want to push any further for now.

More to add? I would say that we have already been sufficiently self-congratulatory, since the interview will come out on Sequence itself, hahaha. Who wants to know more can follow us on our Instagram @sequencemagazine profile or with the hashtag #sequencethemovie. See you soon! 45

Brotherhood is a small collective of friends who share a passion - snowboarding. The idea behind this project is simply to combine the passion of snowboarding with our professional skills trying to tell what for us is the way to experience snowboarding - that is with Brotherhood, in fact.

Brotherhood is a small collective of friends who share a passion - snowboarding. The project was born from the mind of Marco Brandoli, called “Brandon”, by myself Lorenzo “Fizza” Verdinelli and Jampi. The idea behind this project is simply to combine the passion of snowboarding with our professional skills trying to tell what for us is the way to experience snowboarding - that is with Brotherhood, in fact. What we want to do in a nutshell is to make a product that reflects our point of view as a film-photographer. We do not care about the trick, for that there are videos of the mega foreign productions, as we are interested in history, friendship, respect, hard work, beauty - these are the ingredients we are looking for. This project was born two years ago with the first chapter set in Paganella. After that first experience we realised that Brotherhood was not finished, instead it had to continue and improve further. The improvement happened thanks to Madonna di Campiglio, who strongly believed in our project and decided to invest a lot of energy in the realization of “The Secret Session”. That is to say: three days of shooting isolated from the world while remaining in Ursus Park Madonna di

Campiglio. To do this, the session had to start on the last day of the season, when they shut down the lifts, and then only shoot at sunset and sunrise. To sleep and eat we would always remain at altitude in the hut all together. Jimmy Zanetti was our man in the field, and thanks to him we managed to organise ourselves among shapers, riders, and lifts company. Realising the structure was not easy, obviously for the occasion we needed a jump made on purpose, and the little snow from last season, well it just made all a bit more complicated. To our advantage, however, we had the ability to recover a lot of snow from the structures now become impossible to be ridden on for the spring heat, and thanks to the reuse of all this snow the shaper crew of Campiglio managed to achieve a perfect jump in a few days. The first day of session started not very well because of the weather. It had not snowed for months and just during the last day of the lifts opening, the snow and the clouds had fun with ruining our plans. With little stable snow in spring, few degrees of difference drastically change the speed and the feeling, and for the riders it becomes dangerous to jump on large structures without

having the security of hitting the sweet spot of the landing and not the knuckle. The pressure for the realisation of the project began to rise, a day of shooting had flown away without producing anything good, but we still had a day and a half available to finish it all. After a night spent in the hut all together, the view of the sun’s rays coming through the window and lighting up the room, made us all stand up with a smile. The day was basically cloudless and the sun made you want to be outdoors. The light and cool morning breeze, however, would soon be transformed into that tedious wind that never stops blowing and that does not let you jump on the kicker in complete safety. On the first day we had zero wind but a lot of snow and fog, in the second clear sky but gusts of incessant wind. At that point and half a day was already gone, the fear of not being able to jump was becoming more and more concrete. Seeing everyone’s efforts thwarted because of the weather, it seemed an injustice that we did not deserve. Around 5 o’clock in the afternoon, after we had gone back to the hut and eat something, we decided not to give up and we convinced ourselves that the wind had dropped and that it would fall further in the following hours. Totally motivated, we left the hut with the snowmobiles geared up with all our equipment, and as in a scene from the movie Mad Max, we arrived howling at the foot of the kicker. We immediately prepared our set and the riders started to warm up and take off the cobwebs

from their boots, ready to give away our session. The wind? Well, obviously the wind was not down and the conditions were still precarious, but in our opinion it was only a matter of time and the session would start. About half past six in the afternoon the wind began to blow intermittently, leaving windows without wind that gave us further charge. This shooting was possible thanks to the commitment of many people and especially to the riders, in fact at this crucial moment in our story, the riders were fundamental because the wind was disappearing more and more, and after two days of bad conditions, to jump with that passion at seven in the evening it was really epic. The light was perfect, the wind decided to gave us two hours of crazy sessions as I had not seen for many years. The Secret Session tells a perfect story, from a challenge turned into reality, tells of the difficulties that make you want to give up, tells of stubbornness in the desire to fight and to be able to win despite everything. Being able to tell all this in a few minutes was our goal because it is the side that we want to represent snowboarding. A sincere thank you goes to all those people who have made the realisation of our story possible: Marchino Grigis, Simon Gruber, Federico Olivieri, Stefano Benchimol, Jimmi Zanetti, Luca Girardi, Andrea Conci, Denis Battisti, Mauro Maffei, Maurizio Paolini, Oscar Bertarelli, Nicola Bellardini, Charlie Lorenzi and the Madonna di Campiglio lifts company. And of course to Brandon, Jampi and Me.

Anna Gasser is one of the best female riders out there. She always gives her 100% dedication in all the contests and events that she takes part in. Her historic feat at the last FIS World Champs of the past season, that perfect 100-point score together with her backside 1080 double cork nailed on that night put a stamp on her career which was recently highlighted by winning the Transworld “Female Rider of the Year” award. Will she be the number 1 in big air at the next Olympics? Possibly, yes. For now we had a chat with her just a couple of days before her victory at the big air World Cup stop in Milan. Let’s see what she told us.

How did you prepare for this season? I had a really good pre-season, I was riding a lot on the glaciers in Austria and in Switzerland, Stubai and Saas Fee. I think I’m pretty ready for the season. Do you have any secret weapon for this year? I think I’m gonna see how the season goes and of course there are some new tricks and I hope I can show some of them in the me-

anwhile… Last season was really good, so I just hope I can continue on that level, but it’s a big year with the Olympics and stuff so of course I hope to do well there and hopefully do in competition some of the tricks I learned last spring and summer. I did that backside double cork 1080 last year at the World Champs and I hope I can show it again. There are some other tricks that I’ve been working on but I don’t know if

Every time I see girls in contests there is a continuous improvement. It’s cool to be part of a progress like this. I hope the I am contributing to raising the bar.

they are ready for the competitions. We’ll see. We know you prepare hard for the season, you also do acro-yoga. How do you control the anxiety and fear before the comps? I think you learn it a lot through the competitions themselves. The more you compete, the more you get better at that. The more comps you get to, the more you train your mind. For me it’s just about concentrating on myself, not to get too excited about what happens around. When I started to compete the first year of competitions I fell a lot, I never could land my tricks. But doing more and more comps, I kinda trained my mind. Not it’s really about just being in my own world, my own head and not looking what my other competitors are doing. Not looking what people and media expect from me. I think about myself and do my own thing. Any filming projects? I hope I can do that in the future. But right now, this year is gonna be really hard ‘cause I have so many competitions and the Olympics so… but of course next year it’d be great if I can go and film my part. What do you think about the new snowboarding generation? It’s really great to see, especially for us women, there’s a lot of progression and of a lot of young girls that they’re almost doing the same tricks of the guys, that’s really cool to see and for guys they get more crazy every year. They start to do harder and harder tricks at young age, so the progression these days is going huge. When I went to Japan, I was surprised to see so many little kids

like 10-year-old riders doing some tricks that I do just right now. They’re training in cool facilities, with air bags, that’s why. What’s the best resort out there? It’s hard to say. I really like the Absolut Parks in Austria, but there are a lot of good resorts in Europe. Laax is really good, I really like Seiseralm (Alpe di Siusi) in Italy, it’s really fun - I went there a couple of times last year. Laax is pretty cool if you wanna get into freestyle snowboarding because it has also an indoor place when you get jump on trampolines if the weather is bad. Laax is really good to train at. But also at Absolut Parks they have some indoor places where you can climb and stuff. And it’s close to my home so… Do you practise other sports? I like to do some wakesurfing, or I started surfing last summer, the balance work is like snowboarding. Or I just skate around. But really badly. But it’s fun. I’m not that big into yoga, but I’m into acrobatics-yoga. Of course I try to do other stuff in summer that keeps me fit. But I’m not that super pro at surfing. I travel so much during the year that when I have two or three months at home I really enjoy to stay at home with my family and chilling with my friends. How do you see yourself from now in 10 years? That’s hard to say because I haven’t made a plan yet. I feel like as long as I do something that keeps me happy is going to be good and that’s my main goal. It’d be cool if I’m staying in the business and do something back in Austria. But no real plans for now.

In the past few years, after three decades of twin-tip shape dictatorship that lasted since its appearance in the early 90s, several brands have begun to bring back up very original outlines - to say the least. First, we start from the origin of these shapes: for a good percentage, these strange boards take inspiration from 80s snowboards, which were designed to float above powder, borrowing the shape from surf boards and monoski. The pointed and elongated noses, the short and cut or swallow tails, the setback were all functional characteristics for the purpose: at the time it was impossible to think of landing a trick in fakie. The Snurfer by Sherman Popper or the most recent first boards with edges and base in P-Tex did not even have a sidecut, an essential feature for easy handling the board: the new shapes proposed by all the companies on the more or less mainstream market instead, not only rediscover the vintage flavour and benefits of these retro shapes, but integrate them with the latest technology, to offer riding experiences that with a classic all-mountain or twin-tip freestyle board you could hardly get. We are not here to judge the classic shapes, which remain irreplaceable for certain disciplines ranging from park riding to technical freeride through street, slopestyle and halfpipe. To make you understand how in the snowboard world a single trend can infect the entire market, we can take a look at the inverse rocker boom of the end

of the last decade: there was a moment when it seemed that the banana boards were the solution to anything in the world, there was no better camber than the negative bridge: then they realised that shredding on big features or at high-speed riding, they miserably failed. The result was that for several years, the rocker was banned as if it were the Decameron by Boccaccio. The truth is that on more consonant boards as those for freeride or jibbing, the inverse bridge is a solution that features absolutely remarkable benefits. The same fate happened to these surf shapes in the early 90s, when the explosion of freestyle and the birth of the twin tip annihilated any other solution that did not provide the same tip and tail. Now that there’s a new need for rediscovering the origins and the basics of snowboarding, these shapes that have seen the birth of sliding sideways are back in vogue. Whom do we owe to for this return back to basics in the quad cork era? Hard to give only one name, but certainly the former pro Capita Corey Smith with its Spring Break boards has certainly had its weight. Corey began experimenting different shapes with an extravagant yet functional shape for powder riding, attracting an ever-growing array of riders on the run from the spin-to-win circus of nowadays contests scene. We could even name the American crew of the Yawgoons, who only having a hill, a simple lift and a hundred-meter slope available,

KNUT ELIASSEN BY MARKUS ROHRABACHER IN LAAX

literally invented a new crossover type of freestyle and freecarve: weird that it has not been baptized with a name. In the end, we can not mention Wolle Nyvelt and his Powsurf Ă„smo, which has literally began a whole new movement of the lovers of this riding without bindings. We could go on for hours but we are not here to list all snowboard influencers, as to make it clear that at some point the desire to go back to simple things has meant that the companies got back to the drawing board to give riders something new and funny. And so a whole series of new shapes aimed at having fun on and off the slopes were born, bringing with them technological innovations and new snowboard design concepts. For some years now K2 has been promoting and evolving boards based on the Volume Shift: basically, at the same volume of floatation, the shape of the board widens and shortens, resulting in a highly handling, but at the same time preserving its float in fresh snow. These boards, as well as the Quiver series by Nitro, some of the Tree series by Burton or the Capita Springbreaks, are not specific boards for powder, but real all-mountain you can ride on any terrain. This niche phenomenon has started a real revolution of carving, now no longer referred to as a hobby for Austrians with the Eurocarve fever. Companies like Korua, since a couple of seasons now, have been the promoters of this movement and still spend all their energies

on developing boards for riding in and out of the beaten tracks. Other historic companies such as Nidecker have dusted off their experience in performance boards and have proposed on the market specific boards for the speed lovers. The value of the craft and artisan products has finally been re-evaluated and even in Italy the birth of new brands has not gone unnoticed with the firm intention of making quality sticks, with a success that has crossed the borders of the Bel Paese: Sandy Shapes is an example of how one can conquer its spot among the greatest, if it comes from an original idea. Will freecarving become an Olympic discipline one day? Well, if the proposal to include gaming is true so it could even be, why not? Certainly this revolution has made it clear that you can have fun without necessarily disposing of a meter of virgin snow or a snowpark with 50 features (of which usually 90% of the riders exploit one tenth of it all - just the easy line). In conclusion, this article did not want to be a technical compendium on how and why nowadays there are boards built as they did 30 years ago, but a simple food for thought about the fact that everything is cyclical like the bell-bottom pants - and that snowboarding is sick because it is varied and there are hundreds of ways to experience it and interpret it, without the need to line up with the party of the trousers turned over onto the boots or with that of the triacetate suits.

Last time I went to Russia, I vowed never to return again. Well‌ I broke my promise I went back three times this year! The problem with Russia is that not only is it difficult to get there, but sometimes it’s just as difficult to leave. Not because we fell madly in love with this Soviet country with dubious democratic methods, their beautiful architecture largely tarnished by environmental pollution, their broken roads or endless traffic jams‌ no, no, no, none of that! Simply because the administration of this country complicates any approach, as simple and concise as it is. Of course the embargo of the European Union does not fix the problem, and we can only half blame them for not making us any easier. Nearly 10 years ago, in Sochi, before the village became a big Olympic city, then back to an almost ghost town, a crew could not change their flight back because of a paper problem in the city - the printer. I learned at the time of my first trip that the Aeroflot company had known its hours of glory in terms of accidents. The most wacky story is a pilot who let his son try to command his plane, just because he wanted to drive a real Airbus! And, well, his wishes were granted but then they crashed... All this is surely an urban legend, another manipulation to discourage us from going, nevertheless the Russians can be even more

amazing than our most delirious ideas. A thunderous applause follows when we finally land at our destination, Moscow. I am a little puzzled. Do all these people congratulate the pilot for successfully landing the aircraft safely? Do the pilots miss a lot of landings? Will I order a tomato juice or a beer? Will we have our luggage on time? Many existential questions are jostling in my head during these crucial moments. In short, to go to Russia, there are a lot of steps, as contradictory as they are, but with money everyone understands much more easily, is not it? At first, you have to get an invitation. But an invitation from whom? If you are a simple tourist who wants to visit the Soviet remains, whom can you ask to? I plunged into my spam and remembered some e-mails from Russian women wanting to marry me, then eventually get to know each other better, and then if possible have the same nationality. It was not a serious option, it would have been necessary then to marry them, and I had other plans. But luck smiles on us, a whole bunch of companies were created to get us, tourists without women or Russian friends, a false invitation, validated of course by the Russian authorities. Easy, a little ticket and here we are! Then there are still some questionnaires full of super-indiscreet questions because even so it is very impor66

tant for them to know if one is holder of the AIDS virus or if one is an assumed homosexual. Rest assured, normally they do not check for either, but do we ever know. Then, of course, if we are deemed fit, we can obtain a visa for a rather large sum of money. The good thing about all this is that you do not waste time at the customs border at the airport, responding to a series of questions that are just as indiscreet after a long journey. We just content ourselves with a cold look, a stamp and another cold look. For the smile, the welcome, and the thank you for having paid hundreds of euros for a false invitation issued by a company approved by the State, we can put it in the ass. Uhm no sorry, nothing about the buttocks here, it’s super badly seen. Must be careful, he! Once in Russia and more precisely in Moscow, everything becomes much easier if, of course, you are in no hurry. I must say that the country has moved in the right direction since my last visit eight years ago. The roads are in better condition, there are no, or few, truck carcasses that block an entire lane on the highway, no one really cares and the upscale neighbourhoods of the center that looks almost like Zurich, dotted with marble with clean sidewalks. A paradise for skateboarding! However, as soon as you leave the city, poverty is more striking, the buildings are more ruined and life seems much harder. The conditions are quite harsh in winter and it is often gray, very often,

kind of all the time. There is also a lot of ice and the snow is black because of the heavy pollution that generates the extreme traffic of the city and its agglomeration. Well all this is fine but the more I re-read myself and the more I am depressed. There must be some positive points anyway! Yes, it comes back to me, the police do not care about snowboarding and we never got kicked out... Here is a good point! On the other hand, we were kicked out dozens of times by security guards and guardians of buildings, much tougher and unresponsive to our attempts at discreet corruption, or not. Sometimes cigarettes, sometimes a bottle of vodka, or sometimes a small ticket helped us finish our session, but sometimes none of that. Tim, Postland’s filmmaker, even took a big shot in the nose, by the equivalent of The Dude from The Big Lebowski, but much wider, thick, tall and proudly sporting a little Nazi moustache. The need to have a Russian rider on the team remains quite important in these moments, especially when it degenerates a little. For the first time in our lives, we found ourselves confronted with an almost standardised ambient racism, where we were told several times a day to go home and that we had nothing to do here in Russia! But I can tell you that we had a lot of snowboard to do considering the number of spots! negotiations based bribes and other small corruptions. He has also been very effective not to end everyone in jail, and who knows, maybe even in the Gulag, to eat soup with... water. Speaking of water, we often had to pee in plastic bottles, at the bottom of the car, stuck on the lane of the middle of the highway, in a stop of several tens of kilometers for hours. I feel really privileged. Whenever I go to Russia, I meet my friend Vladimir. The last time he was in the mountains of Caucasus, where we were able to get to know a friend of the family, most likely a member of the KGB since his tattoo on the ring finger with a bat and three distinct letters, who decided we should not stop with his colleagues because we were a threat to Vladimir who was passing in 4X4 next to our spot. This time he passed by our spot again. He really likes snowboarding Vlad! So we were in a charming police company on this highway, then suddenly there was something completely unusual. In less than two minutes, the highway was invaded by police every 200 metres and empty in an instant. No more cars were on a total of eight lanes. Then suddenly again we saw approaching dozens of flashing red lights, the policemen downstairs had all out their guns. It was very strange because we were the only ones to attend

this scene, and no one seemed to notice us. Then the lights were approaching at high speed, we could distinguish four big black hummers with a lot of bikers all around, followed by a big 4x4 limousine with a Russian flag, followed by four big black hummers with a multitude of bikers! Going at about 200km/h. I imagine that Vlad saluted us and raised his champagne glass. It was nice to see him again. Then in less than five minutes the dense chaos of the highway resumed to normal activity. One of the filmmakers told us that one day a crazy guy wanted to race with Vlad and his black hummers. He waited patiently for him to leave the Kremlin to go for a walk. Then there was a chase that lasted only a few seconds, since as soon as his car approached the escort, it was kindly crushed and mowed off the road by one of the Hummers. I think the guy had a big accident and rolled over. And yes, you must not piss Vlad! Of course the new generation is much more open and that’s good for the future of Russia. Many cultural spaces, cafes, small restaurants are beginning to multiply everywhere, where the heavy Soviet heritage is slowly fading away. Moscow might now look like a mix of neighbourhoods of Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens, with a lot of cultural diversity. Thanks Russia for the great time! 70

Hi Alex, Duty Free Corruption is probably the biggest Rusty Toothbrush movie project so far. Which was the idea behind the whole thing? Hey Ross, little one-week projects had been chewing up the majority of our time over the past few years but this season we decided that regardless if we could afford it or not we would make the Full Movie dream happen and #DutyFreeCorruption was born.

Which was the rider that blew your mind while filming for DFC? JJ Rayward, Hands down! I remember him telling me on the first spot we hit in Andorra that he was going to do a Back Blunt... I asked “But 270 out?” “Pretzel?” - “No” he replied “Just a Back Blunt”. It wasn’t long after I saw the most perfectly executed Back Blunt of my life that I changed forever how I would continue to view snowboarding. No longer do I give a shit about the trick, for me it is 100% about the execution. JJ has perfected his style and mastered his art and I thank him for opening my eyes to this.

Your crew is pretty tight but here and there some new names jump in. Who has been a good addition to Rusty Toothbrush? Perhaps the most influential addition to the crew has been Tyler Chorlton. A true legend of the sport, he has brought a calming, controlled attitude to the crew that we didn’t even know was missing. Rusty Toothbrush tribe is growing so keep your eyes peeled for some rad up and comers who we feel deserve a bit of time in the spotlight this year.

And who’s the hardest one to handle while getting the shot? Jack... closely followed by Jack. You had premiers in SLC and the legendary E-Stone was your host; what have we to expect for the next Rusty Toothbrush movie? We have got some trips planned to Northern and Eastern Europe plus Japan so it would be safe to assume you’ll see plenty of saki, sushi & vodka in the next movie. May even sneak in a cheeky stopover at E-Stones pad again.

Which was the weirdest situation you find yourself involved during the long travels to get DFC done? The time I broke my pelvis in Kashmir, India and got carried out on a door was pretty freaking weird.

ALEX TANK BY DOMINIC ZIMMERMANN

Hi Alex, your last mini-movie Geisterfarher was really good and more generally all the movies you release with Atagge are something original. What inspired you and which is the message you want to give with them? Thank you very much for the kind words. We appreciate it! Well, for my part, I get a lot of inspiration from the outside of snowboarding in general, but most specifically from filmmaking, literature and music. I feel like the majority of snowboard videos nowadays only have a focus on the snowboarding aspect of it and that’s perfectly fine. But personally, I love to add different layers to it to give the viewer an audiovisual experience that adds to the main factor of snowboarding. Some people love it, some people hate it. I’m fine with that!

filming process last season. We took a train ride to get to this snowed town on top of a Swiss pass that is not reachable by car. We spent three days up there and I think those were some of the most remarkable days I have spent on a snowboard with the right kind of people in the middle of nowhere and the most beautiful sunset on the train ride back down to valley. Nothing weird about that, but personally remarkable.

How do you pick the riders for the Atagge project? First and foremost there should be a certain vibe to begin with. If you are going to be on the road for a couple of weeks, you want to have interesting and motivated people around. After that everything comes naturally. That’s when the finest things start happening.

And the more problematic rider to handle while trying to get the shot? There is no most problematic rider! We all have our little flaws and that makes it so interesting!

Which was the trick that blew you away during last season filming? Definitely Domdom’s Bs 1 onto that knobbed rail. Those knobs were as big as tennis balls. For me personally the most impressing trick during this trip.

What should we expect from Atagge in 2018? Things are heating up. We are just about to start filming the sequel of Geisterfahrer. Let’s see where this one leads us!

Tell us the weirdest situation you find involved during the 78

BENNO BAUER BY THEO ACWORTH

Hi Benno, so Innsbrooklyns finest will be the 10th Sane Movie. What does it mean exactly for you as a crew? Oh man... that means a lot to us! For sure it means that we are not the youngest crew out there anymore haha, but it also means that we are growing and getting stronger every year. To be honest we had a lot of ups and downs. But we are super stoked that we survived over 10 years together and that we still are about the same thing – having fun in life and especially on our snowboard. And that’s what the 10th Sane Movie gonna show to you guys.

STEVE K BY THEO ACWORTH

Tell us the weirdest situation you found yourself involved during the filming process.. The weirdest situation definitely was one time we went out shooting with the winch. Before we cruised to the spot we turned the winch on at the Country Club (Sane Gang Headquarter). It was running perfectly so we were ready to go. At the spot we started shovelling and setting up the spot. Everyone was super hyped to start and just send it. We tried to kick on the winch but it just didn’t work out.. after almost one hour of trying to get this beast running we gave up and went home. When we came home we tried it again and suddenly this thing started to run again. WTF! Super bummer and honestly super WEIRD!

Which do all the Sane Gang members have in common? I think the biggest common point that we share as a crew is that we go snowboarding with our mind set on fun and sharing this fun with other people. We want the snowboarding scene to get hyped on snowboarding. We all do for sure have the most fun when we are shredding together. For example almost the whole gang has been up to Nordkette on the last day of 2017. We been shredding there all day long and cruised down into the city as a gang. We had so much fun yelling at each other, laughing and getting stoked to see everyone ride. And that’s what snowboarding means for us!

Who is in your opinion the most mind-blowing rider of the Sane Crew? We have so many riders in our gang with so many different styles and terrains they like to ride it is pretty hard to say who the sickest is. If I have to choose someone out of our crew I would pick Ethan Morgan. He often blows my mind with what he can do on a snowboard. I have known him now since almost 15 years and he still surprises me with new crazy stuff he does. 79

MATHIAS WITTWER BY DANIEL LOOSLI

JOEL STAUB BY DANIEL LOOSLI

Hi Mathias, how did you deal with the productions of A Love Like Mine Is Hard To Find knowing it would have been the last Mindset Movie? It was definitely my biggest project so far. I even quit my job so I could focus a lot more on the movie and I’ve spend pretty much all of my season filming for it. The decision that it would be the last “Mindset Prdctns” Film was made when the project was almost finished. So it didn’t influence the production too much.

and started attacking the guy and wrestled him to the ground in a pretty rough way. Which was the trick and/or that blew you away during your filming career? There are so many to choose from. Recent ones where Dario Burch’s huge sw bs 1 on his first time shooting a backcountry jump. Or Elio Fumagalli’s cab 1, on that gap rail in Kuopio, which was the second day of the Finland trip.

Do you have a certain type or rider you enjoy filming more? I like to shoot with a big variety of riders, different styles in different terrain or locations keep it interesting. But I prefer a creative rider over someone that goes full send all the time.

And the one that pissed you off the most during your time behind the lens? I never get pissed because a trick takes long to get or when we go home empty handed, that’s part of the game. I just get pissed at myself when I fuck up the filming.

What was the weirdest situation during the filming process? You might have noticed the shot in the intro of the movie where a guy is getting arrested by a cop. So we where filming this line when suddenly a guy came out of the bushes looked around and disappeared back into the bush. We didn’t think too much about it until a cop came to the spot and told us that he was looking for a thief that stole a backpack and asked us if we had seen something suspicious. We told him what we had seen and in the same moment, the guy reappeared. The cop was like “Whatever happens, help me get him to the ground!”

So the next chapter will be “Escape”: tell us a bit what we have to expect from the next movie and which will be the main differences from Mindset movies? Besides some new riders in the line up, the biggest difference will be the new main filmer - Lou Staub. With a new filmer comes a different style of shooting and a new look for the movie. And we also changed up our season plans and will be filming a lot more in Switzerland and nearby countries, instead of going on a long trip to Finland. 80

SEBI MADLENER BY THEO ACWORTH

Although the previous projects featured great riding, Odissey seems to be a step up, like the best movie so far. Do you feel the same? Thx a lot, happy to hear that! I always try to step up from the season before or at least try to do something different. I think the main difference this year has been that I’ve been working with more different filmers and riders which have led to more variety of riding as well as filming styles. Also the music for Odyssey worked out great, and I feel it increased the editing a lot. And for sure all the featured guys killed it riding their snowboards and stepped up their game.

SEBI MADLENER BY THEO ACWORTH

the next day, all neighbours been down except one guy who just wanted to be the ass but luckily had nothing to say as his wife was cool with it so he cleaned out the whole landing over night himself. But we got snow plow truck support of his neighbour the next day and hit it anyways. Which was the trick that blew you away during your filming career? I got to minimize it from my whole career on odyssey and still plenty of tricks come up to my mind... :) so basically everything that Simon Pircher did is outstanding, that grass gap tail presses, frontside wall ride to drop, back blunt 270 drop to bank, front shifty nose tap to frontboard, pole jam to roof drop... but then there´s also Joris Doorn´s Christmastree Millerflip or that f3 he just sent to the bottom also Mario Käppeli´s back1 and switch b1 at the perfect jump or Lukas Ellensohn with a crazy shifted b3 at a hip spot, Flo Corzelius with a huge method on a slushy hip in Andorra as well as Ethan Morgan´s FS Underflip 5 Japan at the same spot.

Do you have a certain type of rider you enjoy filming more? Basically I enjoy shooting all kind of riding as long as the guys enjoy riding. I think most important is to have fun and to show that. Tell us the weirdest situation you found yourself involved during the filming process. So just shortly I got told by an owner of a handrail that he got 5 sons and 3 daughters and none of them is as stupid as us and riding his rail would be the same like him rubbing my face with a metal brush. Or just two days ago, we’ve been filming a street line and had everything ready to hit it

What should we expect in 2018? It looks like it’s going to be a series of mini movies. At the moment we focus on having a good season, a lot of fun and produce as much footage as possible. 81

CEES WILLE BY PONCHIZK

Hi Tim, it looks like Loose was a pretty successful movie! You’ve been awarded a lot at IF3 Festival in Montreal. What you think made Loose so special? That’s really hard to say, because we’ve all been working on the movie for so long, you kinda forget what made it special in the beginning. But we did put a lot more effort into the spot selection. We really wanted to find new spots, and the entire winter we only filmed one rider per spot. Because of that both the individual parts plus the movie as a whole showed something new.

filming last winter? Too many, but if I have to choose: Simon’s uprail ollie-up & ender wallride trannyfinder. Will’s wallride bs180. Cees’ roof gap duh. And who’s the riders the made you go nut during the filming process? Nobody drove me crazy. I don’t wanna sound cliche, but we are actually all really good friends. Also in summer time we hang out all the time, so we don’t really drive each other crazy. What does the future holds for Postland Theory? What do we need to expect from the next Postland project? We have already started filming for two movies and some webisodes. One movie about the same crew of people that made Postland into what it is. One exciting thing is that Kas Lemmens is finally back after a two-year injury. We’ve already been filming a bunch in December and his footage is unbelievable! We’re also getting a new crew together. Basically the second movie is about the riders we’ve always ridden park with, but we wanted to do a bit more together this year.

What does have a rider to fit into the Postland crew? Style, motivation, and personality to hang out with. We know you fell into some weird situation last year while filming for Loose, tell us the sketchiest one.. Definitely getting head butted on the nose by a Russian security guard. Which were the top three tricks that blew your mind while 82

I met Hitsch a long time ago. So long I can’t even remember exactly when early 2000s might be, Burton European Open youth contest in Livigno might have been. Who cares when. Anyways. He’s always been that type of super kind and nice guy whose gentleness reflects into his way of riding. His project called “Glue” raised only enthusiastic comments from the scene after bringing a new sparkle in the same old way of filming and editing snowboarding. We had a small chat with Christian on his thoughts about the present and the future of snowboarding.

BY SILVANO ZEITER IN WALLIS

What have you been up to recently? I’ve been slowly getting ready for the season, really just shredding around here and there preparing myself. Your project, Glue, turned out to be one of the most important and internationally well-known video of the past couple of season. It was an instant classic as soon as it was presented. Did you expect a global huge positive recognition/reaction like that? What was on your mind when you came up with that idea? What will be the next chapter for them guys? Nowadays it’s really hard to predict the outcome of your content but in general I was pretty positive that it would get a good rating. Of course I did not expect such a good feedback, I was definitely a bit overwhelmed. The ideas came naturally and it’s just really satisfying to see an idea come to real life and actually working out, that’s the biggest joy for me because most of the time the ideas don’t work out due to a problem. We are currently working on a project that will be released at some point in 2018, that’s pretty much it. Recently it looks like, also from your video project with the use of different music too, and from other projects like Korua Shapes videos, that people might need and finally want something different than usual. What’s your take on this topic? To be honest I don’t really think too much about the people and what they will think of the project. I do things because I want to do them and make them become reality. I think more what’s been done and what could be done to make things different. I am also influenced by other things than only snowboarding and that’s how our projects might come out a little different. Of course at the end it’s nice to see if people like it and are hyped to go ride themselves. Where is snowboarding in general going in your opinion? No matter what, it’s going to progress further and further. That said it will also be divided more and more, I think there are two extremes going to happen: on one side you have this high performance contest snowboarding that gets crazier and crazier. On the other hand you have snowboarding as an experience, a lifestyle and sort of culture that’s always going to evolve in

its own way. It’s unfortunately going to be divided a little more than it is already. You used to compete a lot back in the days (well, until a couple of seasons ago actually). Did you get bored of all the trainings and comps and stuff ? Now that you’re kind of “out” in the free world, what do you think of competitions in general? What did you like the most about that? I actually competed until last spring, so this is really my first season without attending all the major events. I feel really good about it though, at the moment I don’t really miss it as I did it for such a long time. To me it was a great experience and something I wanted to do for a long time. I gave it all and tried to be as good as I can, that’s a really satisfying feeling. But now there’s other things in snowboarding that I am interested in and I want to follow that path. The timing for this move is really important and I finally thought it was the right time to do so. But of course, I really liked competing. When you get the chance to ride the big events, where all the people are cheering you on and you try to land your best run, that’s a really challenging but also great feeling. It can take the best out of you and I was really interesting in that thought, to be the best as I can be. That’s all I ever wanted to figure out. Who’s gonna win the Olympics? :) OK, no, I’m joking. Well, if you wanna have a guess, feel free. Haha, actually I think it’s going to be a great season this year as there’s quite a few guys who have the chance to win it. I think it’s up to Ayumu, Scotty, Shaun and Iouri, they will batte it out. Everyone is talking about “progression” and then they’re talking shit about triple/ quad corks and 1260+ rotations. What’s the right point of balance in your opinion? Progression is always going to happen, it’s a natural thing that evolves all the time. Though I think there’s a way to control it more with different judging systems or concepts. To me that’s something that will be changed within the next few years in order to keep things interesting and that people actually understand what the guy is doing in the air. As long as we have acceptance for the progression but also for the classic snowboarding, then it’s all good.

LAST WORD PIC: MARKUS ROHRABACHER IN TANDADALEN TXT: GIACOMO MARGUTTI

I’m almost sick and tired of writing always about the same stuff like the importance of friendship and having fun all together while snowboarding. But just take a look at this picture and tell me if you don’t think of what I’ve just written above. Has anything changed since you began snowboarding? To me, not a lot. I started in 1991, after watching a big air contest in Milan. After that I fell in love with this strange stick under my feet. I started on the slopes but soon, with closed lifts because of too much snow, I took it to the streets, jumping down garages’ rooftops with my friends, and trying out some other crazy stunts in a super small village on the mounts. I didn’t even know I was doing something “in street”. I didn’t even know that snowboarding was about to play a great part in my life. Well. This season we’ve been really lucky – it has already snowed a lot and apparently won’t stop. Have fun out there, you and your friends.
