Fill every moment of your life, without ever taking breaks. A trend that often has to do with the fear of being alone. Alone with your own thoughts and emotions. Yet the ability to stop, to give yourself a space of time between periods or situations of life, is fundamental to give new meaning to your own existence and to follow your own inner rhythm. A pause in a piece of music does not interrupt it. It is part of it. A vital void. If neglected, the execution is insecure, nervous. Even language works that way. We use commas, periods, we start a new line. We turn the page, we take a breath, we introduce silences. In the same way, we need to identify our pauses, to insert spaces between moments, periods, situations of our life. To foresee stops, without them we’d rush into chaos and we’d get confused, risking to put things on top of each other, not distinguishing them, not understanding what we really feel. We would be overwhelmed by events. It’s a paradox but we need to stop to give continuity. To take a step back to bind. Taking a break means getting in front of yourself, getting in touch with your often neglected reasons. Many times we live a life made of chaos to escape that. We are distracted, we struggle to stay behind things, to close them, to solve them, to reach them. And we leave our true needs in silence. Pauses, as they work in music, give us precious opportunities to give meaning, rhythm and intensity to movements and activities. And broaden our essence. And "taking a break” becomes now a business model. After all, the success of the outdoor is also linked to this deceleration, which can be observed and experimented, for example, in the HangOut area of the OutDoor fair in Friedrichshafen. We are exactly going there.

Once upon a time there were leather, waxes and twills. Filson now adds to its collection technical fabrics like the 1000D ballistic nylon used for the new version of the Dryden trolley. Designed to fit the standards of the major airlines, it reveals a 36-liter interior compartment with four compression straps and an outer compartment for storing smaller items. And, of course, a telescopic handle to run from one terminal to another. Despite its renewed appearance, it still presents Filson bag’s DNA.
Canada Goose creates outerwear and accessories for outdoor enthusiasts since more than half a century. For the first time an all-over reflective material called Reflective Birchbark made its debut in one of the brand’s collection, an exclusive print inspired by the birches of British Columbia is applied to the models of the Black Label series. The Harbor Jacket is a rain shell jacket that features a convertible rear hem to provide extra protection on rainy days. When visibility is poor, the reflective print gets activated.
Combining comfort, weather protection, durability and style was not an easy challenge, but it was exactly Quoc's goal when designing "the perfect shoe" for off-road cycling. It all starts from the sole, with a proprietary GravelGrip rubber compound that perfectly balances durability and tightness. A composite midsole in carbon fiber offers an ideal balance between comfort and stiffness on the pedal. A waterproof upper (seamless) resistant to abrasion; laser micropores that imitate the perspiration of the skin to balance the temperature of the foot.

Following the Swiss approach to sustainability, Nespresso and Victorinox collaborated to design a Pioneer multi-purpose knife collection by recycling aluminum capsules. This year's limited edition is presented in the elegant Nespresso Dharkan color and is, once again, a perfect example of Victorinox's commitment to sustainability and the vision of the coffee brand that intends to separate, reuse and recycle its unmistakable capsules.
Martine Rose and Napapijri decided to consolidate the partnership, under the new NAPA label, with a new PE2018 collection. The second chapter of the saga aims to re-explore and honor the heritage of the Italian brand interpreting it from a fashion perspective. ˜ THE NORTH FACE BOT TLE SOURCE COLLECTION To be ecologically fair is both good for our planet and ourselves. Designers and fashion houses know this well and lately have been trying to bring innovations in the sector. This is the case of The North Face that introduced in its new summer collection, Bottle Source, a range of sustainable clothing and accessories. Bags and t-shirts for men, women and children, made with recycled polyester from over 70 tons of plastic waste collected in the national parks of Yosemite, Grand Teton and Great Smoky Mountains. The brand, which donates a dollar to the National Park Foundation for each Bottle Source product, hopes that this new line will help to reduce the amount of pollution in the country's parks.
UE BANS DISPOSABLE PLASTIC Europe takes a position against plastic and bans disposable objects responsible for 85% of the pollution that affects oceans and beaches around the planet. The new initiative, which follows the one of 2015 about plastic bags, is part of a wider strategy in the circular economy package approved by the European Parliament to make the research for alternative materials convenient. The stop concerns 10 single-use plastic items such as crockery, straws, drink shakers, cotton buds and balloon rods. In addition, by 2025, Member States will have to collect 90% of plastic beverage bottles even through some deposit systems. According to Brussels, the directive will avoid the emission of 3.4 million tons of CO2 and environmental damage that cost the community 22 billion euros.
VAUDE WINS THE GREENTEC AWARD 2018 Vaude won the 2018 GreenTec Award in the "Sport by Jack Wolfskin" category dedicated to products that have a special contribution in the protection of the environment and demonstrate a remarkable level of innovation. The Tettnang company has received this award for its new Green Shape Core Collection, completely eco-friendly, composed of innovative natural materials that offer solutions to environmental problems such as those caused by microplastics. Already in 2016 the brand has been awarded for the eco-sustainable conversion of its headquarter. The final decision was taken by an international panel of 75 experts composed of independent representatives from the world of business, science, associations and media.

Shortages and dissatisfaction about the federal standards and on obtaining ministerial certifications. A first important group of operators, among which Patagonia Provisions (food branch of the famous clothing company), has decided to start its own label, the Regenerative Organic Certification (ROC). Started by the Rodale Institute, it wants to bring sustainable agriculture to the next level by combining three ambitious benchmarks into a single certification: proven biological farming practices that regenerate soil, improve animal welfare and ensure social equity.
HOUDINI BETS ON RE-SERVICES People seem to be ready for new ways of consuming. After years of tests and improvements in the concept stores of Stockholm, Barkarby, Goteborg, Åre and Oslo, the Swedish brand Houdini places its biggest bet on re-services. In the new Täby store, half of the space will be dedicated to repairing, re-selling second-hand goods and renting outerwear items, a rapidly growing formula that currently covers technical shells. Second-hand products are in fact collected through a shipping system, where the customer receives 50% of the earnings once sold. The strengthening of these services is reflected in terms of sustainability and bottom-line, bringing a completely new segment of customers.

hanks to a careful and accurate research, PrimaLoft, a world-wide specialist in insulating materials and functional fabrics, will present at the Outdoor expo of Friedrichshafen its first insulation made entirely of recycled PET bottles following the high performance standards of the brand: let’s introduce the PrimaLoft Silver 100% PCR, PrimaLoft Black insulation - 100% PCR and the PrimaLoft Gold Insulation Luxe.
virgin fibers, creating a stable insulating fiber able to meet the required performance standards. Jochen Lagemann, Europe & Asia Manging Director, stated: "With the new 100% PCR insulation, we offer to our customers the perfect product that combines performance, comfort and sustainability. The feedback of our brand partners has been overwhelming so far. This innovation is also another important step towards achieving our sustainability goals. By 2020 the brand expects to produce 90% of its insulating products with at least 50% recycled fiber.
The brand has now accomplished a very important milestone because the outdoor world is getting more and more careful to find sustainable solutions to reduce environmental impact. The insulation has been conceived, studied and created by the best experts in the sector and it features all the qualities that have made PrimaLoft a reference point in high performance insulation, such as low weight, high compressibility and water repellency.
This is the most sustainable synthetic insulation on the market and it is no coincidence that Vaude is one of the very first companies to use it in its products. He also confirmed that he will convert all his PrimaLoft Silver and Black Insulation articles to 100% PCR versions by the summer of the 2019 season. Aaron Bittner, Vaude Head of Apparel, said: "One of our main goal is to reduce the use of fuels fossils in our products and create closed circuits. PrimaLoft provides us innovative solutions following our choice to stay away from oil".
About nine bottles in Pet are used to create the insulating layer necessary for the realization of a jacket (40gr, m2). Thanks to numerous tests PrimaLoft has succeeded in developing special recycling and production processes solving the problem of the difference in melting points of PET bottles, used to create recycled fibers, from

hen it comes to Finale Ligure, everyone immediately thinks about the temple of the Outdoor and it could not be otherwise! With its beautiful cliffs, numerous tracks for mountain bikes, its long routes perfect for beautiful walks and its beaches where you can practice surfing and sup, Finale Ligure is definitely the town of reference for outdoor enthusiasts from all over Europe. We at The Pill obviously love it. From September 27th to 30th 2018 the Flow Outdoor Festival by Vibram, this year’s official partner, will take place in this beautiful town. There will be four days dedicated to sports, involving athletes, enthusiasts, industry insiders on excursions and contests, ranging from the uncontaminated hinterland to the crystal waters of the Ligurian Sea. It will be the second edition and we can not wait to share with you this new extraordinary adventure, like the one in 2017 that recorded more than 25,000 visitors and over 1000 athletes, that helped to create an extraordinary energy that involved everyone. Enrico Guala, Flow’s co-organizer, told us: "it is an event dedicated to the many outdoor disciplines that the territory of Finale, thanks to its natural vocation, offers to athletes and enthusiasts who come from all over the world. Flow by Vibram is also an opportunity for brands in the sector to meet, without formalities, in a wonderful natural context, and also meet the public to present the products of the season and have their new technologies tested". This year, the event will be held in collaboration with two other important events, that will make Finale's atmosphere even more special and exciting: on one side there is the social value of Finale For Nepal, on the other we will have the sporting competition with the Gran Final Enduro World Series. What’s new in this second edition is the EWS Challenger, a non-competitive mountain bike race. As always, there will be an expo area dedicated to partners and sponsors in the Finalmarina and Finalborgo areas, where visitors will be able to test new materials and new products of the most important and recognized companies in the sector. As official partner, Vibram will actively collaborate in numerous activities, including the Vibram Trail Session, curated by Alessandro Brunetti and in collaboration with Rider Pro Shop and the Slackline River contest by Vibram Fivefingers. Jerome Bernard, Sport Innovation Marketing Global Director, stated: “There’s a deep link between the territory of Finale and Vibram, a natural connection that has been built over the years through the company's support to events such as the EWS, Finale For Nepal, Flow’s first editions or the Marchesato Trail. From this year Vibram is proud to put its name on Flow ’s event, and the reasons why are many: first of all we believe in the event, that is destined to grow, becoming a must of outdoor events; also for Vibram it is vital to strengthen relationships with all the players of Finale, from brand partners, to shops, to all the fans who will come here to enjoy sports: mountain bike, trail running, hiking and climbing... Nothing is missing! This year we will also have a special evening by Vibram with the screening of the film Duality, focused on our girls athletes and about the theme of women in sport. See you all at the end of September at the Flow Outdoor Festival by Vibram!”. This wonderful initiative can not be missed, we will be there, will you?

fter the success of the first edition, with 30.000 visitors and 200 exhibitors during its three days, Outdoor Expo replicates the experience with a new date for 2019. From the 1st to the 3rd of March, the pavilions of the Bologna exhibition center will come back to life with a lot of outdoor sports activities and a rich national and international tourist offer specialized in "en plein air" destinations to be discovered. For this second edition there will more disciplines to be directly tested, always divided into the four elements: Air, Water, Earth and Fire. The product test areas will be implemented with the aim of involving visitors more closely in touching the performance of sports equipment. There will be also a lot of space dedicated to entertainment, with a full program of performances, which naturally integrates the well-established compe-
titive aspect, and high-level conferences on the themes of outdoor tourism and sporting practice in all its aspects. "We believe that this event is an great opportunity for brands, in order to undertake direct contact with their customers within an excellent exhibition context; the immediate success of the first edition confirms its strategic positioning in the Italian trade fair scene, with an offer of sports disciplines, and specialized tourism promotion, to date

Circular Design "Imagine (...) a building as a kind of tree. It purifies the air, accumulates solar energy, produces more energy than it consumes, creates shelter and habitat, enriches the soil, and changes with the changing of the season."

he publication of "from cradle to cradle" by McDonough and Braungart marked an important turning point in the world of sustainable design, defining for the first time the passage from the concept of eco-efficiency to the one of eco-efficacy in a clear, explicit and unambiguous way, it went from doing more with less to act differently and innovatively according to a systemic approach inspired by the functioning mechanisms of nature. Design for sustainability enters a new era that combines traditional prevention and reduction concepts with a creative push that aims to enhance resources through virtuous cycles. For years, in fact, the environmental issue has been faced without really questioning the real cause of the problem: the linear production system that on one hand extracts natural resources to turn them into products and on the other generates waste and therefore hardly reusable material if not even polluting and dangerous. Over time it has been realized that the various strategies aimed at the eco-efficiency, including the popular Factor 4 and Factor 10 (that means to achieve the same level of welfare with 1/4 or 1/10 of the resources) were no longer sufficient to manage the depletion of resources and the generation of pollution on a limited planet, where the famous limits of development were already been overcome. A change has been necessary and it was as much as important as it was banally logical. The inspiration for a new economic and productive social model has come to the natural world with a more attentive and conscious look, a source of incredible inspiration. Quoting Janine Benyus, this change "introduces us into an era no longer based on what we can extract from nature, but on what we can learn from it.

In the nineties, the culture of zero waste, of industrial symbiosis and of the systemic vision of the project began to spread. Gunter Pauli, founder of the Zeri Foundation, is one of the leading figures in this new movement that is summarized in the Blue Economy, an economy capable of facing sustainability issues beyond the simple conservation: "the aim is not to invest more in the environmental protection but to move towards regeneration. The Blue Economy wants to ensure the possibilities of the evolutionary paths of ecosystems so that everyone can benefit from the eternal flow of creativity "(Gunter Pauli, XXX) Nowadays we talk about Circular Economy, an eco-efficient productive system that is both regenerative and restorative, in terms and in means. The Circular Economy was theorized by Walter Stahel in the '70s but finds today the diffusion it deserves thanks to the work of the Ellen Mac Arthur Foundation. A great sailor and the first woman to beat every record in the solo circumnavigation of the globe, Ellen Mac Arthur retired from the sport scene in 2010 to launch her foundation with the aim of accelerating
30
the transition to a regenerative and circular economy and make it effective and concrete. The eco-efficacy theorized by McDonough-Braungart becomes real and concrete and also becomes the spokesman of a cultural, social and economic change, able to completely rethink the world in which we live. The concept of the end of life of the product is replaced by the one of eternal "resurrection and transformation, the entire production cycle is revised: the product is stripped of its uniqueness, becoming one of the many forms assumed by a constant flow of matter and energy. The waste ceases to be a waste, the output becomes a new material disassembled and optimized to fit into a productive or natural cycle. The attention is shifted from quantity to quality according to a holistic perspective that takes into consideration every aspect of any production process. We are facing an epochal turning point made necessary by the limits of a myopic system that revolved around the product and its obsessive consumption and which has been so far the cause of environmental disasters, climate changing, social injustices that emerge with ever greater force. Nowadays there is a strong reference to that design for the real world so much desired by Viktor Papanek almost 50 years ago in which the human artifact is absolutely connected to the natural system whose ultimate goal is solely to sustain life.
Of course we are only at the beginning of this epochal change and the proposed models can not be considered as salvifics per se, nor they can become yet another marketing tool or an ideology. They are the honest and conscious application, the intellectual evolution and the critical use that could make the Circular Economy, or the even more ambitious Blue Economy, become winning economic and social models. Seen through the eyes of a designer, these new models represent a blue ocean full of opportunities. Designing for a circular or blue economy adopting a systemic approach has the great purpose not only to overcome environmental problems, but to enhance the matter and the energy we use (up-cycle) for the production of goods and services in order to help the web of life to progress. It is already possible today to wear technical fabrics made from agricultural waste or recycled plastic bottles, fishing nets, textiles‌ You can walk on shoes that once worn can be recycled and then return to being nourishment for the ground, skiing with 100% materials from renewable and recycled sources whose components at the end of their life can be fully recovered to continue feeding the magnificent flow of matter and energy that is life.

Gore Wear
BY DANIELE MILANO
A N D H OW D O YO U B R E AT H E ?
Why do you sweat? It’s a once in a lifetime question, we have all asked ourselves. Sweating is an absolutely spontaneous body reaction that serves to cool down our rising body temperature and eliminate potentially toxic substances such as lactic acid and urea. For Gore, the goal of perspiration and waterproofing is a belief that, over the decades, has given birth to ever more performing, increasingly breathable membranes! And from the experience of Gore comes Gore Wear, a line of sportswear in which the transpiring membrane Goretex is the master, placing itself at the top of a line of clothing dedicated to outdoor sports and cycling, and that has almost no competitors on the market that can hold a candle. The Gore Wear sportswear line is the natural fusion of Gore Running and Gore Bike, dedicated respectively to running in all its forms and to cycling, both on the road and off-road. No longer two distinct technical clothing lines, but only one brand that combines a passion for running, and why not trekking and hiking, and the two wheels. Two distinct declinations within the same brand, with different lines, cuts and specifications.
Gore Wear, running and cycling under the same roof. In a multi-faceted and "multisport" market, Gore Wear responds in an unequivocally way. Materials, technologically among the most advanced, are came together, for the most demanding user, in the same line with different cuts depending on the range of use and on the level of performance required. Gore Wear is the ideal answer for the most common sportsman, for the athlete or even for the active and dynamic man. Respecting different market requirements, Gore Wear is able to guarantee a solid identity, with a wider range of choices. The Multisport panorama is divided into categories, Running or Cycling? 3, 5 or 7... but what type of athlete are you? Gore Wear, according to wearability and use of materials, has 3 categories with 3 distinct lines of clothing. R and C, written before the number, also indicate the suggestion of use of the garments. Although Running (R) and Cycling (C) do not want to be a limit of use, but a simple suggestion. Gore Wear, more than a shy wink at Urban Wear is the concrete answer to the dynamic life of each one of us. The
32
greater versatility of use is not just an invitation, but the confirmation that Gore Wear rightfully enters into the wardrobe of each of us, even just to get on the bike to go to the office or to reach the tram stop. R3, R5, R7 or… C3,C5,C7? The clothes with the R letter have a more running cuts. They took inspiration from athletics, again proposing materials and new colors of what Gore Wear is used to do. The number just gives an extra suggestion, if an R7 garment is "100% performance", a R3 garment is a suggestion to wear it to run or go to the gym every day. Going out with the dog for a walk, a picnic out of town with friends? A more athleisure look for an aperitif? R3 is the answer. Are you ready for repeats on 1,000 meters for a marathon preparation with a slight headwind? R7 is perfect for you! And it’s the same when it comes to cycling, the perfect suit to imitate the exploits of the Giro d’Italia will be marked by the C7 initials, while riding fast from home to the office will be a C3 garment. The choice is up to you!

Aku Bellamont Plus embraces environment.

ku trekking & outdoor footwear, is the only footwear brand that calculated and certified the level of environmental impact of its Bellamont Plus model according to the calculation standards required by the international protocol EPD System (Environmental Product Declaration), a Rina Services super partes organization. This certification concerns the calculation of the level of environmental impact during all the individual stages of the production chain: from the production of raw materials to their transportation in the company, from assembling to packaging, from the distribution to the maintenance until its disposal. This calculation is done based on five critical factors that are represented by:
1. Acidification: the phenomenon of acid rain. 2. Eutrophication: the reduction of the amount of oxygen dissolved into water and the relative proliferation of algae and other eutrophic organisms. 3. Greenhouse effect: the increase in temperature and humidity within the Earth's atmosphere. 4. Photochemical oxidation: the phenomenon of photochemical smog deriving from ozone emissions produced by industrial activity. 5. Thinning of the ozone layer: the reduction of the level of protection of the biosphere from solar irradiation due to the effect of greenhouse gases. This model comes from Aku's commitment in researching and developing new production solutions. Bellamont Plus is a very high quality shoe suitable for moving around town or in your free time and the origin of the materials used is mainly European. The leather tanning is done without using chrome, the inner lining leather is tanned without using heavy metals, tread and midsole are made of recycled material from rubber processing, the laces are in natural cotton and the plantar is made of coconut and bamboo. The certification of the environmental impact calculation represents for Aku a form of responsible commitment towards retailers and consumers, with an eye on the maximum transparency and respect to the production methods and to the origin of the product. Aku nowadays can control the level of environmental impact already in the design and development of a new product, helping to limit the damage to the ecosystem.

hen he lands on feet on the Scurbatt Club landing field, a well-groomed lawn whose scent and bright green color is of freshly cut grass, the impression is that Chrigel Maurer does not make any effort or sound. Probably the little he does is covered by the polite applause he receives and which hardly disturbs a landscape of rural peace, almost golf-ish, kissed by a sun and a summer temperature. A surreal contrast to the sharp mountains and inclement weather conditions that Maurer and his opponents faced during the Salewa IronFly. A competition that Maurer, The Eagle, has won as a mandatory prediction being the only man that virtually has been dominated any hike and fly competition for a decade. Establishing, as a consequence, the reference time of this first edition. Four days, four hours and fifty minutes before, the 23 participants of the Salewa IronFly, the second longest competition of hike and fly in the world, were leaving the waterfront of the Lecco lake, running to climb to the top of Monte Cornizzolo. Why they were so in a hurry to get a thousand meters in altitude with a backpack of over seven kilograms under a shining sun, it is not a matter of simple competition. The opponents are not those who run alongside them. Those are companions of adventure. The first one got on top in an hour and a half.
Here we are on Monte Cornizzolo. First stage of a route of 458 kilometers as the crow flies to the goals of Macugnaga - Monte Rosa, Bormio, Pizzo della Presolana and finally Suello, back home. How many are the kilometers as the crow flies when you have to fly according to the currents, the wind, the thermals, the air that is a fluid like water and exactly like water can become a stormy sea? How many are the kilometers when you have to walk challenging the contour lines to take altitude in time for the next flying window or fly following the valley floor under the rain for days? They are 747 kilometers point 6. If you are Chrigel Maurer, the best one in this competition and in the world. Reversing the ranking at the bottom there is Carlo Maria Maggia who recommends to his support team that "there is no hurry", but the effort is the same, and he is not even more identified by the facial recognition of his iPhoneX. When Chrigel Maurer sets foot on the Scurbatt Club landing field, the 223 (point four) kilometers on foot, the rain, the cold, the wind, the extra-time night, the 8,550-meter of climb, the 524 (comma two) kilometers flying, the forced landings, the waits in the clouds, the hailstorm while flying, all of this epic adventure seems unreal. But the rumor spread quickly. "On the way I found so many fans who came to greet me and cheer me - explains Chrigel - it seemed to be at the Red Bull X-Alps. So that means that many people followed the live tracking and that makes the Salewa IronFly already a famous race in its first edition.

California Speed Project.
UNDER ARMOUR EXPERIENCE PICS: JHONNY CARRARO T X T: 4 4 2 S N A K E S
Have you ever heard about the "Speed Project”? It’s a challenge born 4 years ago, during some chats of a small group of friends: “Would we make it running from here to Las Vegas?” Said and done! The following year the “challenge” was extended to close friends, and then became a world reference event, even if still quite small. Forty teams were present, many of them coming from the United States, especially from the near San Francisco area, but also there were many teams from NY, Alaska and Canada. A good part of people participated from Europe, like our team, which managed to mix three different states: Italy, Croatia and Serbia. It’s not an official competition, there are no online registrations and no medals; there is only a departure, an arrival, a series of maps and directions and the desire to run all together. It is a relay race, where the challenge is not only running 550 km, the majority of them in a completely dry and deserted area, but there’s also the desire to get involved in something that is a mix between danger and prohibition. We landed in California the day before the race, just to get over jet lag, to prepare supplies, to fix the van and all the things you do before a race like that. We were in Venice, a few kilometres from the departure set at 4 am on the Santa Monica Pier. Incredibly, there were 300 people animating the area and it seemed more like 4 pm. The faces were sleepy, there were those who joked and smiled, those who tried to concentrate and those who ran to dampen the tension, but the adrenaline was palpable, everyone was pumped and ready for the long awaited departure. Bang!

Have you ever heard about the "Speed Project”? It’s a challenge born 4 years ago, during some chats of a small group of friends: “Would we make it running from here to Las Vegas?”
In a short time, the sea breeze left space to the warmth of the city. Everyone was now free to face his own relay according to his rhythm. In a short time the caravan of campers was outside Los Angeles, the streets lined with buildings left space to an uphill road and the coolness of the morning was quickly replaced by the warm Californian sun. The caravan of runners and campers was getting longer and longer, the battle between the French Sunchasers team and the American Tracksmith team would have been worthy of being broadcasted live on TV. We ran no matter what, between heat, sweat and headwind, including some errors in navigation, which certainly did not favor the unfolding of the relay. Then we slowly entered into an unusual routine, consisting of stretching, feeding, micro sleeps. In a short time we realized that running for 10 km in a row under that shining sun was a crazy thing, but fortunately the sunset decided to raise, giving us a pleasant coolness. During the night, inside the van, the tension could be cut with a knife. You could not sleep, the great fuss between those who ate, those who dressed, those who finished running, did not allow us to rest even for a moment and everything was followed by the constant background noise given by the engine of the van. The road became more difficult, the asphalt left space to a the dirt road and in some parts to sand dunes; it seemed that dawn was never going to come, there was just fatigue. The adrenaline allowed us to continue and the night passed a little faster.
We have not accomplished anything superhuman, but certainly it is an adventure that we will hardly forget.
Another sunrise was in front of us, but this time it came with an incredible spectacle: the sun with its warm tones rose and painted the surroundings in orange and we, with our mugs of American coffee in our hand, were amazed. Despite our fatigue was real, we certainly did not lose the good mood thanks to our friends who supported us through social networks and counted with us the remaining kilometres. We got at our last stop, the Mojave desert, the dreaded Death Valley! A long and endless straight road, in the middle of nowhere, where everything is dry and where the heat is a big thing. The dashboard of the van marked 38°, but the temperature perceived during the race seemed to be at least 50°; the first troubles, the inevitable slowdowns, the first crises, you could not run more than 2 km in a row. We drank more and ate less, our bandanas soaked in water and small peanut butter sandwiches marked the changes of our relay run until we reached the end of the fiery valley. The night was our favorite travel companion, it gave us a little relief, which refreshed us, even if the legs were tired and aching, we could not give up. Only a series of long climbs were missing and finally we had a glimpse of the silhouettes of the mountains, a glimmer of light and then, in the end, there was the Sin City. The desire to get there was huge, but the desire to take a picture in front of the famous sign "Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas was bigger. The last mile we all walked together to feel the excitement of running on the Strip and to have a beautiful memory of something that we ended together. It took us 47 hours and 47 minutes to reach the finish line, the effort was huge but the joy we have experienced can not be really quantified. We have not accomplished anything superhuman, but certainly it is an adventure that we will hardly forget. We did not participate to win but to have a moment that remained with us, in each of us and that will be remembered for having accomplished it all together.

Last but not least. Starting last and arriving last at U.R.M.A.
most of you who will read this article will not understand what U.R.M.A. is. I’ll be blunter: you can now decide to stop reading this article or you can try to understand it, reflect if you want. I’ll be blunt: most of you who will read this article will not understand what U.R.M.A. is.
U.R.M.A. is a Conspiracy. I will tell you more. I will tell you all the things that U.R.M.A. is not.
I’ll be blunter: you can now decide to stop reading this article or you can try to understand it, reflect if you want.
U.R.M.A. is not a race. U.R.M.A. is not legal - that seemed obvious enough to me -.
It's simple: if you want to try to understand what U.R.M.A. is you must first of all be lucky to get the invitation.
U.R.M.A. is not a meeting place for professionals runners - or not necessarily -
U.R.M.A. it is the primordial genesis of something that I cannot explain to myself even now, let alone to you.
U.R.M.A. is not something you can pay for it or pay to be part of it. U.R.M.A. is not a normal thing.
U.R.M.A. it is a non-competition conceived by a visionary. You are not interested in the real name of this character. The visionary we’re talking about will be Paco for you. Only Paco. Unghie Rotte Mani Aperte (Broken Nails Wounded Hands)- that’s the acronym of the word U.R.M.A. - let's pretend it's a Conspiracy. Indeed let's say it:
U.R.M.A. is and is not so many other things. I still have to understand the reason why I have been accepted to be part of it. You should ask it to Paco - exactly the one I was talking
+ E V E RY DAY YO U D O N OT L I V E , YO U D I E +

about before - but he would probably answer "U.R.M.A. what?!". I usually climb, I don’t run. Of course I like to run but it’s just a thing like any other to live the mountain in my own way, because I like to go home and feel myself broken down by fatigue and uncertainty. But I have to be sincere, I did not even want to go at the start line. My right knees hurts a lot. I don’t know why and I don’t really want to know. The fact was that I had this commitment, I had made a promise too big to be broken, just because I was sick. I’m not this way. I feel something and when I feel something it means that I can not ignore it. I repeat, I’m not this way. Too easy, almost trivial. I promise to do what I can, without forcing. Lieutenant Mirel gives us the go and I am already last together with Andrea and Luca. They were my traveling companions in this non-race. We close the ranks. We are the brooms of ourselves - remember? It is not legal -. You are not interested in what I experienced during the race because you already know that I did not run fast and that I had a bad knee. I do not want to sell you any good story with a happy ending. I ran in U.R.M.A, at the beginning though. Then I almost exclusively walked. I blasphemed, I ate gummy candies and kept looking at my watch. Nothing romantic, not at all. But all bloody real. But I want to make you understand one thing in all of this. And to do that right I want to tell you about the last 5 km of my and Luca’s run - Andrea had to leave at the 38th km to go to his family, which is much more important than U.R.M.A. -. We were the last ones, I already said this. There was a huge sun that filtered through the trees and all of a sudden the sky became dark, almost black. Luca was tired and I was tired too. Luca had a wounded tendon and I had a throbbing knee. The storm arrived fast. The lightnings could not be seen, but the thunders ran through the trees, and the trees acted as a sounding board and deafened us. The rain was heavy and I was starting to feel cold. The path from wide became narrow and from narrow became wide. We crawled our feet and did not even talk to each other anymore. Except from curses, I thought I heard them. As we left the forest there was a grey and steaming asphalt road, because in the meantime it had stopped raining. It was the last km or more likely the last few meters and we knew we had succeeded where we wanted to. We knew we had given back, at least in part, what the mountain had given us. For a moment, before the final curve, I was almost convinced that I saw the shadow of myself in a different form, I felt strange and this bothered me. It was right there, at that moment, when I averted my eyes from that dark projection because we were greeted by a great roar, a slap. They were all there waiting for us. Luca and I were the last ones together, we finished it together, limping, with a beer in our hand. We were the last ones and maybe the most important ones.
Luca and I were the last ones together, we finished it together, limping, with a beer in our hand. We were the last ones and maybe the most important ones.
"You have honored U.R.M.A" shouts Paco. Hugs, handshakes and someone that gave me a beer, another. I'm moved, even Luca is. Everyone probably knows that but everyone pretends nothing.
"You have honored U.R.M.A"
I'm fucking happy. ... Now that you have finished reading this, try to understand, try to reflect. If you can’t understand any problem, that day I did not understand anything either.

Interview with Adrian J. Margelist. Adrian Margelist is Chief Creative Officer of the Mammut Sports Group since early 2017. He has worked as Creative Director for internationally respected fashion labels, such as Esprit, Navyboot and MCM. Prior to joining Mammut, he was tasked at Liebeskind with the jobs of Creative Director and Brand & Product Managing Director.

Hello Adrian, we know that you studied Fashion Design at Marangoni Institute in Milan. What motivated you to follow this career? Being creative has always been a completely natural thing for me. I've always loved painting, I started doing graffiti when I was about ten years old and I first met the the graphic design world at twelve. At sixteen I knew perfectly what I wanted to become: a famous designer. That idea struck me like lightning and I followed through with it since that age. And I still love my creative work every single day! You lived in the most renowned design cities, which one impressed you the most? And for which reason? Tough question, there are so many marvelous places and cities out there! If I really need to pin it down to my top three, I’d go with London, Seoul and Berlin. Living in London in my late 20es was amazing. The city is bursting with creativity and I get along very well with the British mentality. And working for Vivienne Westwood opened many new doors and ways of thinking for me. Seoul was an incredibly dynamic city. During my time there the city went through a fast and remarkably transformation, becoming one of the most inspiring city regarding trends in the world. And Berlin, well Berlin is Berlin, just amazing, wild, crazy. You are always around the world travelling because of your work, especially in Asia, a land of great inspiration. What does Asia represent for you and which part of it is your favorite? Asia is incredibly inspiring, not just Korea but Japan and China, too. Having lived in Seoul and being active in Asia since almost 15 years now I’m still impressed with the dynamic. Japan for example is a huge inspiration for me, the energy there combined with the food – one of my all time favourites – and the people is amazing. I really love it there. But the place to be at the moment to me clearly is China. I know China quite well since a decade and it’s an incredible melting pot of cultures, merging East and West. We know that you’ve worked for some of the most important fashion brands like Vivienne Westwood, Chanel and Dior. What motivates you to start a new partnership with Mammut? An Outdoor brand! At the heart of everything you have brand building and the love of the product: every brand has its own particular DNA that has to be tre-
ated with a great deal of respect. The product is the trigger that invokes emotions and generates enthusiasm in customers for a brand. In this regard, the aspects of heritage and premium quality are at the core, especially with Mammut. Through its branding Mammut conveys a clear signature that reflects our company history of over 155 years. This runs through the entire product portfolio, starting with the logo and claim, and going through to the cutting technology. At the end, the customer should readily recognize Mammut by its tailoring cuts – whether it is the top notch mountaineering collection Eiger Extreme or the new Urbaneering line Delta X. Moving from fashion to the outdoor world, it’s surely a great change. Where are you going to take inspiration for your next creations? I travel very often and keep my mind and eyes open on my journeys around the world. As a result, I‘m conscientiously exposed to the most diverse influences. That means that great ideas can grow from the smallest sparks. In the end, the DNA of a brand must be identified and deliberately presented to the market. Building a brand to me means driving its evolution. The point is not so much to revolutionize the substance of the brand, but rather to reduce the brand to its essential characteristic and to develop continuous innovation. Mammut products, for example, exemplify the DNA of mountain sports and the history of the brand. Born in Valais, Switzerland, I practically inherited a natural connection to mountain sports.

More generally spoken I see two other factors which will be even more important to us in the near future: sustainability and digitalization. Sustainability has been way more than a soft factor for some time now. Instead, it has become a core factor and all of us are called upon to contribute. Mammut actively works on continuously reducing the ecological footprint of its products.
Delta X integrates materials such as high quality waterproof laminates, workmanship like bondings and laser cuttings on one side and technologies like the GEORGANIC 3D Technology pattern on the other side that were developed for the Eiger Extreme range. t's been twenty-seven years since I came in Sri Lanka for the first time. Everything has changed in my life since then and I am curious to see what has changed in a nation that had fascinated me for the serenity of its inhabitants. I do not travel with a backpack and no programs anymore, but I move with my family and we don’t have much time to do everything we want. I already know that the only way to really immerse myself into the culture of a territory is to run on its ground. The tour we have planned is to move towards the inside till Dambulla, then continue to Nuwara Eliya at the foot of the highest mountain of the island, and then reach the capital city, Colombo.
I'm used to run in places I don’t know, but being thrown in such a different environment is unsettling, I don’t know its dangers and I shortly understand that I will have to change my exploration plans. The forest is impenetrable, every time I try to follow a trail left by the animals I am bounced back by the thick vegetation. I insist on looking for paths but there aren’t any, the animals are the masters of the jungle and they are the only ones that manage to move freely. This ritual is going to be repeated every morning. I wander among the small villages of the countryside and I witness the awakening of life. All people greet me and welcome me always with big smiles, typical of this people. Someone follows me by bike or on foot for a part of the road. The courtyards of the houses are always very neat and I often see people sweeping streets even though they are made of soil and not paved.
The main road, which crosses the country, is no longer unpaved as it was twenty years ago, but retains the same dimension. The traffic of bicycles has been replaced by scooters, the one of carts towed by animals by motorized vehicles. The stray dogs in the middle of the road, however, remained the same. Every morning I get up half an hour before dawn and leave the room with the front light on my head, saying goodbye to my family still sleeping, in the same way of when I go to the start of a race. We arrived at our hotel at night, from Google Maps I managed only to have a vague idea of where I am, where I can go and I'm not sure that those grey lines on the map are real paths.
Even in greater poverty situations the inhabitants of the island are always very clean, men are well-shaved or with long but always neat beards, women have beautiful perfectly combed black hair. I remember that the Buddhist monk's kit consists of the classic orange dress, a bowl, a gauze to filter water and a razor, as a symbol of hygiene and body care. Today the monks travel by plane and take selfies with their phones, but religious cults, mainly Buddhist, always manifest themselves with poetic flower offerings and songs that make them particularly joyful. The countryside is extremely alive, a system of dams has allowed to collect water in some basins that are exploited for crops. I discover that here are produced some very particular red rice varieties and that other spontaneous ones have recently been discovered.
I couldn’t find anything on Strava. The impact with the humid and dense air of the forest, thanks to my tiredness and the jet lag, is alienating. I run, sleepy, trying to put my feet in cone of my front light. The darkness is thick, you can not see anything, it takes me a while to realize that there is no street lighting. The darkness sharpens the other senses and the sounds of the forest inspire a certain fear, it seems to be in an immense zoo where there are no human beings and the animals scream to try to make themselves heard in the multitude of voices of the jungle. Slowly the sun begins to clear the route under my feet, I raise my head and, as every time I see the dawn, I realize that it was worth it.
The crops are organic and this allows to sell the products at a higher price. Many homes still don’t have electricity and the days are punctuated by sunlight but people are happy and smiling. From rice we pass to the cultivation of bananas, they’re small and in many varieties from yellow to red, and then continue, going uphill, to the tea plantations left by the English. One day I left to

go up to the 2,534 m asl of the peak of Piduruthalagala, the highest mountain on the island. In the dark I was able to find the road, stray dogs did not scare me anymore (we found a balance: they bark, I slow down and move on the other side of the path and they let me pass), the snakes I met were big but harmless. The day was clear and the sunrise wonderful, but soon I reached a military jeep that prevented me from going on: there were leopards on the route. I tried to convince them, I also had an appropriate jaguar t-shirt, they called their colleagues who were on the summit to protect the telecommunications antennas that confirmed that they saw jaguars that morning too while climbing. There were nothing to do, I was very sorry because the view of the tea plantations from up there had to be magnificent but I had to give up. The forest with its wild nature has won. We spend our last day in Colombo, the main city of the island. The transition from the forest to the chaotic city was traumatic, the deafening traffic and pollution impressed us even if we are accustomed to Milan. Like every morning I left for my exploration tour but I shortly realized that the condition was very different from the countryside. I watched some guys lining up to enter into the construction site of a big skyscraper, I watched them with an infinite sadness in my eyes. That’s what changed.

very time I decide to start traveling, I start thinking about the countless places I would like to visit, usually not taking too much into consideration one of the most beautiful country in the world, ours. This new experience started that way. I’m not a very good cyclist but I wanted to try something different, so we chose a cycling itinerary that would mixed sport and culture, the ideal way to explore what surrounds us. But let’s take a step back. At the beginning Spain, America or even Patagonia, were our first options, rather far away places but then we thought about Italy, Tuscany to be exact and we all said yes. A land of good food, which is fundamental for me when choosing a destination, with its perfect climate at the beginning of November and characterized by a breathtaking panorama. We could not have made a better choice. Four women, four distinct worlds. Same but different, each of one us with her own personality but what really united us was our desire to share travels, adventures and new experiences together. There was no competition between us, the absolute rule was having fun, it was not a race. Each one of us with her own times and rhythms, we just wanted to enjoy the journey. Every time we decide to travel we discover something new and sport is our mean of transportation. We followed the route of the Eroica and we arrived into the most authentic Tuscany that with its autumn’s scents and colors accompanied us through cities where history has left its mark. We started from Gaiole, then reached Chianti, Siena, Montalcino, Crete Senesi, Radda in Chianti and then went back to Gaiole, a route of 241 km with a climb of 4,350 meters all on white gravel roads. The climbs were difficult but we gritted our teeth and arrived on top. When you know that at your arrival there will be a glass of Brunello di Montalcino waiting for you, you will be surprise of the energy that you can find in yourself.
We like to think that through our travels, many girls can find inspiration in trying something new and different that can change everyday’s routine or the classic workout in the gym. We want our adventures to encourage girls to do the same. We wanted to get to know better this sport which is usually for men and then share our knowledge with all the girls like us. LIV, our bicycle, accompanied us on this trip, its correct name is Invite, a road frame with wheels suitable for gravel roads. I immediately fell in love with it, it is elegant, comfortable, light and the double brake saved me in different circumstances, given my lack of familiarity in riding a bike. As a skier I have to admit that after this experience, I really missed cycling this winter. We are now ready to ride again on our Liv, are your girls ready to put yourself on a saddle? Also girls can do it.

Jamie Ramsey: a real adventurer. BY GIULIA BOCCOLA
excitement rise within, the adventure was beginning. I started a cycle that would cover 3700km and finish in La Paz, the capital of Bolivia, a month later. I don’t plan my adventures very carefully. It’s my opinion that if you plan it then it is , not an adventure but an adventurous itinerary. Over the next 8 days I made my way across the very agricultural part of Brazil. While the roads where I was mostly fighting for right of way with big lorries, I still got the pleasure of submerging myself in the local communities.I had been really excited about Paraguay. To me it is a country that is not visited so much and for me that adds an extra hint of the unknown.
Hello Jamie, tell me something about yourself, who are you and where are you from? I am a British Endurance Adventure Athlete who was born in Scotland. I lived just outside Edinburgh until I was 18 and then moved south to continue my education. I worked in the City of London for 12 years until 2014 when I made the decision to make a career change and become an adventurer. I know that you left your office work to take a new path, what prompted you to make this choice? And where did it bring you? When I left university, I made the pilgrimage to London where I got a job at a top international public relations firm. I spent 12 years working in the consumer sector team and got exposed to some amazing people and clients but the work itself didn’t inspire me. At the age of 34 I made the brace decision that being happy and fulfilled was more important than working purely to put money in the bank. I had always wanted to be an adventurer and decided that I was going to combine that dream with my biggest passion, running. With a 11,000km adventure in mind I turned to a map of the world and very quickly “Running the Americas” was conceived. I was going to run 17,000km from Canada to Argentina, through 14 countries and across 2 continents. This adventure was going to be the start of a new life as an adventurer.
It was the first time I got a taste of the old colonial South America, with very Spanish influenced architecture. The next morning I had to make my way west and towards the Bolivian border. There a very few established cities or large towns in Paraguay which also means there is a very simple road network that purely runs from one town to another. Naively, I thought that these road might have been in a slightly better condition that what I found. Once out of the main urban area, the road quality became very erratic. I could be cycling along perfect tarmac one minute and then mud tracks. Then came Bolivia. This was the main focus of my adventure. This was where the Andes started to rise and the real adventure was set to begin. When I arrived in Uyuni I found out that my dream of crossing the salt flats looked like it was about to shatter.
You are a running lover and showed it to us with your famous challenge that brought you to run 17.000 km starting from Canada to Brasil. Would you like to tell us about your beautiful biking trip from San Paolo to La Paz? I had loved my running in South America so it was an easy decision to make to return. I knew I had about a month so I explored all the options and settled on cycling from Sao Paulo to La Paz. So in March 2017, I jumped on my fully loaded bike and cycled from Ladbroke Grove to Victoria, boarded the Gatwick Express, packed my bike into a box and I was on my way to South America. The plane landed at 6am and I could feel the
The next morning I set off north hoping to cross another salt flat. The road there was unbearable to ride and the going was tough. Despite having mountain bike tyres on my tourer, the sheer weight of my panniers was too much. When I hit the salt my bike just broke through the thin crust which made the going incredibly hard. As the sun set, and the wind rose, I managed to find a dried-out river bed where I could set up camp.
52
I tied everything down and bunkered down for the night. The storm hit shortly after with the wind blowing my tent around like nothing I had ever encountered before. The next morning I woke to find everything covered in sand. A small hole in my tent had let in a inexplicable amount that covered everything. Outside everything was worse and my bike looked in a sorry state. I cleaned everything off and headed East and towards La Paz. My last day seemed to coincide with a local cycling competition and while I struggled along on my touring bike I was passed by hundreds of Lycra clad Bolivians who gave me shouts of encouragement when I tried to compete.
enough time to make the cycle.
I had had taken me 29 days (2 of which were rest) of cycling to cover the 3600km from Sao Paulo to La Paz. And arriving in Bolivia’s capital did not disappoint. You make your way through the suburbs and dodging mini buses and heavy traffic and then there it is in front of you. A sprawling city, nestled in the natural bowl overlooked by impressive peaks. At the bottom, I had to negotiate a taxi back to La Paz as there wasn’t
Which is the most beautiful place that impressed you, that surely you won't forget? The Salar de Uyuni was a breath takingly beautiful place. Most people visit it during the dry season and that is when you see the beautiful photos of the white salt stretching as far as the eye can see. Well, I went during the wet season and that meant that the worlds largest salt flat could be better described as the worlds biggest mirror.
Which is the reason that push you to undertake those kind of trip completely alone? I love travelling and adventuring alone, though I am not averse to trying it with other people. For me there are two parts to my trips. Firstly, there is the adventure aspect: being somewhere new, wild and unknown. Then there is the efficiency aspect. I am very passionate about pushing my body as far as I can and love testing my limits. Right or wrongly, I think that by pairing up with someone else would limit the scope of exploring the personal boundaries.
53
54
a For me travelling is about getting lost. It’s going to new places and allowing yourself to be completely taken a back by nature, people and architecture.
about. When cycling across Bolivia, I had the pleasure of being part of a local “Inca” festival. I was the only outsider there and they made sure I didn’t feel like one. Moments like that stay with you.
Did you meet some difficulties along your journey? considering that you had to cross the Andes. Every adventure I undertake comes with a number of obstacles that make it so appealing for me – this wasn’t any different. Climbing the Andes was the biggest physical obstacle I had to navigate over and to be honest was the main reason why I undertook this adventure.
What's left of a similar trip? what kind of emotions do you feel when you come back home? With every adventure there is a residue left. You see, experience and breath in a new world and then when the time comes, and it always does, you have to return home. The memories will fade, the experiences will morph together and the feeling you had may dampen down BUT there is an inexplicable element of that travel which leaves it’s mark on you. You will reflect on it in quiet moments and then one day a sound, smell or interaction with someone will ignite it and everything will come rushing back. Travel is a wonderful thing and something we should all do more of.
The Salar de uyuni was the second biggest obstacle and was completely unplanned. It wasn’t until I was about two days cycle away that I became aware that it was covered in 6-10 inches of highly salty water. I was determined to cross the Salar and pushed on regardless of the warning. I kept asking people if it was possible and it wasn’t until I was a few hundreds of metres away that I finally found one person that said it was possible. His words of confirmation that it was possible was all I needed. When I arrived at the edge of the water and looked out I was filled with a huge wave of excitement. I knew I would be the only person undertaking something like this and knowing I was going to be alone was all I needed.
Travelling is a wonderful thing and something we should all do more.
You are living in a camperized van, which is your first thought when you open your eyes? Right now I am living between my campervan and friends spare bedrooms. The campervan gives you the resounding feeling of freedom. You have everything you need to exist. At the drop of a hat (or turn of a key) you can be on your way to somewhere amazing.
How did you get some food and where did you sleep? When I am on an adventure I like to be ready for all eventualities. I carry a small one man tent and use it when there isn’t an alternative. I am not against staying in a cheap hostel or small hotel. For food, I normally carry a couple of days food with me (porridge, noodles, tuna, cookie) and then buy what I can at small restaurants on the side of the road.
You are a real adventurer, are you planning another new trip, a new experience? I am constantly planning new adventures. People ask what I think about when in the middle of nowhere and the answer is normally my next adventures. Right now I am focussing on trail running. I have 2 big trail running multiday events. One is running from Fort William to Cape Wrath (Scotland) and the other is the Transalpine. The adventure itself is pretty easy to plan but the work around it is overwhelming. I need that to give me the drive to push myself on.
What does travel mean for you? and which value do you attribute to the word "travel"? For me travel is about getting lost. It’s going to new places and allowing yourself to be completely taken a back by nature, people and architecture. Being a solo endurance traveller means you find yourself in places that others can only dream

Stigmata BY M AT T EO M O C E L L I N

M
eadows of a green so bright that seem to be fake that spread placid near fresh streams, spruce trees that stand out as if to hide the meadow when it turns into dolomia rock. All the high peaks of this incredible chain of mountains rise majestically, the Sas dla Crusc and the Sas Rigais are the masters. At sunset the silence dominates, as if the place wished to hold back some few minutes from the day before while the sun goes down and touches the shadow of the Odle. Below the Sas dla Crusc there is a small mountain church. Its consecration probably dates back to 1484, blessed by the Auxiliary Bishop of Brixen. Ancient and sacred are mixed here. Some people believe that it is the hand of God; then those less religiously inclined simply accept that feeling of contemplation that one feels in front of something so beautiful that the church of Santa Croce inspires.

Three old sculptures made of stone pine look at them standing on the meadow: Christ and the two thieves nailed down forever on their crosses suggesting another road to reach the sublime. That is exactly why it is called Stigmata. Simon Gietl and Andrea Oberbacher contemplate the rock wall in front of them as the sun sets on a summer's day. “Do you think it is climbable Simon?” Andrea asks. Their voice got lost in the wind. But one thing is sure, both Simon and Andrea are aware that there are no other routes there. Nobody has ever passed there. They surely need to go and take a look.
of our fathers, a much more complicated and detailed concept, a sort of practice where what matters is leaving as little sign as possible of one’s passage, tying up with someone you respect, someone you trust and who understands you straight away, without even talking. There are no words needed when you undertake such an adventure together. Three more days and a bivvy on the wall later Simon and Andrea accomplished their challenge: complete the opening of this new line. But perhaps talking about challenge would not be correct, they are not heroes, they are real people who repeatedly wondered if it was making any sense to move forward. But the answer was always yes. That answer comes from a mixture of intuition, perseverance and necessary detachment to accept precarious and distant protection. They moved forward and lived this adventure together. A year goes by, a year full of other adventures and projects, a few trips round the world, something else to think about. But a year later, Simon and Andrea are here again, in this same place and finally decide to attempt its free ascent.
The roped team continued the slow descent towards the ground, chatting away and joking around. With their materials on their shoulders they reached the open space of the small church of Santa Croce and for the last time, almost at the same time, they turned to look again towards the Sas dla Crusc. Their eyes scrunched up to pick out the details and their imagination galloped away imagining the quality of the rock which is now yellow then black. “Andrea, do you have any plans for after tomorrow?” Perhaps there wouldn’t be the need to ask. They know each other very well, they have been climbing together for years. This is how it is in the mountains. It leads you to share emotions, dreams, fears and narrow spaces. There is no space for superficial knowledge, you need to have someone to trust completely and who knows your thoughts and actions even better than yourself.
What matters is leaving as little sign as possible of one’s passage, tying up with someone you respect, someone you trust
They silently tie and start climbing very concentrate. They support each other, incite themselves on crux moves, while their hearts beat together and accelerate the rhythm when the foot of one of them slips for a moment, before finding again its firm hold. But above all, during the whole ascent, these two men smile especially with their eyes.
The following days passed by with a strange but pleasant feeling of fervour and expectation, is that feeling when you wait for beautiful things to happen, a bit like waiting to open your Christmas presents as a kid. Space and time got dilated by some bizarre magic and often the wait itself becomes the best part of that experience. After two days of waiting, Simon and Andrea meet up again below the Sas dla Crusc, they are both full of gear and hope. The wait to find out if they will be able to open a new route in the middle of that wall gives them that beautiful feeling of adrenaline that makes them euphoric. But there is no time for feelings now, they tie up and climb in silence, step by step, rock by rock, while the sun slowly rises behind them. Suddenly it’s evening, when they untie. The whole day seemed to have passed in a flash exploring the huge rock, minutely looking for pockets and cracks in which to place pegs, cams or at least a nut.
It is an evening during the end of July when Simon and Andrea head down for the last time from Sas dla Crusc. Once again they are silent. Once again both men know, without talking, that around the Dolomites there is no other route like this: they silently enjoy the gift of having seen it, opened it and climbed it. Just like a year ago Simon and Andrea stop at the open space in front of the little church of Santa Croce, turning around to admire that wall once again. Three old sculptures made of stone pine look at them standing on the meadow: Christ and the two thieves nailed down forever on their crosses suggesting another road to reach the sublime. The route that Simon and Andrea opened and climbed, their route towards the sublime, is right there behind the crucifixes.
"Alpinism" means also that. Climbing is going up and down and then up again, it is necessary to back track to go forward. It is a sort of old-fashioned alpinism, the alpinism
That is exactly why it is called Stigmata.

Winter in Patagonia BY LUCA SCHIERA

t has almost become a second home for Teo; while instead I was going to spend my fifth winter in Patagonia. We left at the beginning of January, and once we arrived, as if by magic, the season was reversed. Our base was a hostel in El ChaltĂŠn and we were ready to spend long days waiting for some favorable weather conditions. We already knew that the wall conditions were not the best. The bad weather, typical of this part of South America, that year seemed implacable and had not given the slightest break in the last months. Climbing mountains was going be very difficult, but we crossed fingers. As soon as possible we reached the valley below the Marconi Pass. We spent a night in a tent while studying the granite walls, we tried to understand what was above our heads; left our material under a rock and then headed back to the village fighting the strong gusts of wind. The following days passed by immersed in the daily routine: early wake up call, weather forecast, breakfast, some books and some work in front of a screen. Again forecasts, climbing and back to the hostel; forecast in the evening and, sometimes, there was some time to control the forecast even at night.
A couple of weeks later we saw on the maps a bubble of high pressure that seemed directed towards us, slowly the possibility of good weather took form and became something precise and that could be translated into the possibility of climbing. There were going to be two days without wind, sunny but cold. All mountaineers in the country prepared themselves after weeks of waiting. We left with a few hours of advance but, pushed back by the wind, we retraced our steps and decided to try again the following morning. We reached the material that we had hidden in the afternoon and, finally, we were able to see the mountains clearly: the clouds were disappearing and the wind blowed the last gusts. We spent the day studying walls and preparing a plan for the day after; we went to sleep, with some doubts about our choices.

e woke up at night and walked towards the wall of Cerro Pollone; the approach was a bit complicated and, in the last part, we had to climb a small icy part. We arrived under the wall at dawn, it was very cold, but on the other hand the climb looked easier than expected: there were no roads already traced and we chose a straight line in the middle of the cracks. The rock had the shape of a wave that rises upwards, the biggest difficulties would probably be in the upper part. According to forecasts, the wind was going to rise in the evening and get worse at night. We had to be fast. We started on the first pitches, it was still cold, but we managed to free climb them. The sun was going to rise soon. We climbed constantly, alternating ourselves, up to a crack full of snow; we cleaned it up while going up then continued in free climbing. In the meantime the sun had arrived but the wind came back blowing hard; at that moment it was not a problem so we continued straight up to a few meters from the final ridge. We saw it really close but we couldn’t reach it. The rock suddenly changed color, becoming yellow and scaly, we could no longer continue. The only possibility left was a series of pendulum traverses on our right in order to reach another crack. We had lost a lot of time but we were finally on the ridge.
Suddenly the horizon opened up in front of us, we saw the whole rocky chain of the Fitz Roy from a new perspective, while the Cerro Torre began to be embraced by clouds of bad weather. We hurried to get down on the other side, the only downwind possibility. We reached fast the narrow gully in the middle of the walls that leads to the glacier. The tent was visible a few hundred meters below us. We looked out to see better, but we were completely soaked by the melting water blowed by the wind; some big block came off rebounding downwards and definitely killed our desire to go down there. We forgot about having a fast descent so we walked among the seracs that lead under the northeast wall of Fitz Roy, we hurried up to take advantage of the last hour of light to better understand where we were and then followed on foot, at night, a track to ChaltĂŠn, just in time to see the sunrise.

he "Calzoleria Sportiva" was founded in 1928 by Narciso Delladio, a craftsman from Tesero, who in his small shop, his small world, built wooden clogs and leather boots for the woodsmen of the Val di Fiemme. In the early 40s Mr. Delladio, who has been already considered as a forerunner, had patented a lacing system that was really an innovative system at that time and for years remained a reference point in the footwear world.
At the beginning of the '50s, his son Francesco joined the company and decided to build a new and more modern workshop at the gates of Tesero, in which the first ski boots in leather and more technical mountain footwear were designed and built. At that time "la Sportiva" from a small shop began to establish itself nationally. Years passed and the Delladio family grown and started doing more and more innovations. With the third generation, in the '70s, the first climbing shoes were created, revolutionizing the world of rock shoes. They organized the first climbing Masters of Bardonecchia, the Arco Rock Master and the first international fairs...
and when, in the 80s, climbing became an international sport discipline, all the best climbers from all over the world were wearing "La Sportiva" products that would be remembered in history for having launched its famous yellow and purple shoe on the market. In the 90s, the brand was in full growth and decided to move to its new headquarters in Ziano di Fiemme and, precisely in those years, the Mythos model was created and it became a real reference point for an entire generation of climbers thanks to its lacing system. And here’s the recent developments: the launch of the Mountain Running line with the Exum Ridge model already back in the days at the beginning of the 2000s and the sponsorship of the first Skyraces in the highest mountains of the Dolomites, up to the most recent developments with the collabs with international testimonials like Anton Krupicka and Urban Zemmer, and then again the new technical clothing sector and all the digital and technological developments following the debut in the company of the fourth generation of the Delladio family.
These are all precious moments in the history of a company born and remained loyal to the Valle di Fiemme where it still produces 50% of its footwear in a factory that employs 300 people and where are made all the researches and developments on all trail running, ski mountaineering, trekking, climbing and extreme hiking shoes. These are moments that are kept as a treasure of an inestimable inheritance, they are not stuck in time but they advance consciously, obviously uphill, as the people who have always lived in the mountains do. It is a constant research: always looking forward, in the same way they have been doing since 1928!

e would have liked to summarize the whole history of this brand in an article but, besides being kind of disrespectful, it would have been something that just wizards could do. But we wanted to do a tribute to them and intrigue you by telling a curious episode that has been told to us during the brand’s fantastic 90-year anniversary, one of those stories that so much resemble the birth of the first Mac. An incredible story in short. Of those that we like the most.
“At that time we’ve just made a very important step, that nowadays is still our industrial belief, the one that still guides us in every innovation and decision taken in the development of our products: turning a limit into an opportunity."
These are the words of Lorenzo Delladio about one, if not the greatest industrial secret, that La Sportiva has kept hidden from its competitors and from the whole world. For those of you who don't know, the cities of Balocco and Tesero are 355km away from each other. In Balocco (that in this case has nothing to do with the Piedmontese confectionery company), there is the Alfa Romeo test track. This is the place that Lorenzo Delladio, now CEO & President of La Sportiva, reached during the spring of a distant 1979 driving a Fiat 238 van. An old Rolling Stones tape was playing and the weather was hot. Because of his passion for rallies and car racing Lorenzo, who at that time didn’t play all the important roles and charges as he does nowadays, was in contact with an Alfa Romeo technician and just happened to know that at the track test of Balocco there was a deposit of slick tires already used and no longer usable for races. Those tires could be the answer to one of the big problems, the most correct word would be dilemmas, which obsessed the shoe factories between the late '70s and the early' 80s, the time when the phenomenon of free climbing was literally exploding. Six hours of travel on a shabby road were worth discovering if what was only a vision could have been turned into a reality or simply into an illusion. At that time there was no time for useless chatter and Lorenzo just loaded twenty tires in the van. In Balocco the company worked hard in Tesero's laboratory: the metal wires were removed from the tread and the soles were cut out. To optimize time, die cuttings were prepared to cut the soles in series with a shear. Lorenzo’s intuition was neither illusion nor madness: they were the best soles ever created by the brand before. The experimental process went on because the shoes were ready, but they had to be tested. It was at that moment that they realized that the mix, to be at the maximum of its efficiency and adhesion, had to reach an optimal operating temperature and therefore had to be preheated. In the case of rally’s production it was easier because the compound warmed up thanks to the dynamic movement. For rock climbing, however, the sole of the shoe had to be preheated with sun light and cleaned of impurities in order to activate the mixture and increase the performance, at least until the moment when, after a few minutes, the soles returned to room temperature. At that point of the development they had already found the right solutions for the leather upper that matched with the cotton lining, a puzzle that other companies were still struggling to solve.
72
73
So an unprecedented performance was achieved in addition to a comfort fit. At the time the most performing rubber on the market, at least among pro climbers, was produced by the Spanish brand Boreal and no other company had managed to find the solution to create a mix that was even similar to theirs. Manolo, a La Sportiva top athlete at that time and still considered one of the pioneers of free climbing, managed to bring a pair of Boreal shoes to Tesero. Tests showed and obtained a new and super-performing tire by combining the advantages of slick rubber and Spanish rubber.
It was clear that a definitive solution must be found by relying on a supplier. The idea of finding the same soles that Boreal used was discarded for obvious reasons of competition. Thanks to his experience in car races, Lorenzo came in contact with a technician from Marangoni in Rovereto, a Trentino company that still produces tires for cars and trucks. Marangoni had a production technology that allowed to rebuild the tire several times, applying the tread to the carcasses with a vulcanization process. It was a rather economic process, halfway between industrialization and handicraft, which allowed tires to be personalized in the tread pattern and in the mix chosen each time according to the terrain and the race conditions. Marangoni certainly had the experience and the know-how necessary to work on the soles' compounds. At that point the prototypes with the Spanish compound made using Boreal soles had proved to work perfectly and were industrialized. Marangoni accepted the request to become a supplier and technological partner. A chemist took charge of the project in Marangoni. After many prototypes it was possible to finalize a rubber that had a level of performance and durability comparable to the one of the Spanish tire.
Here was the real problem. How to keep all these discoveries hidden to the outside world? An agreement was signed with Marangoni who undertook to keep the secret of the rubber’s formula and to produce it exclusively for the Tesero’s brand. Lorenzo was used to leave the factory with his van and bring to the company the rubber sheets for the soles purchased by weight. The plan was always the same: Lorenzo arrived with the usual Fiat van, entered and went empty loaded at the weigh bridge where two pallets of rubber got loaded into plates, the van was weighed again for the counting of the goods and the seal was delivered with the documents of travel. Nobody had to know that the Spanish rubber actually came from the Marangoni factory in Rovereto. Therefore, the utmost care was needed to store the documents in order not to show Marangoni's heading. Carla was chosen as the only trusted accountant and took care of receiving invoices from Marangoni and proceeding with the payment without letting anyone else know about it. It was an industrial secret. There was no need to explain any details, it was told to employees, agents and customers that what was used on shoes was actually a Spanish compound. In that way everyone thought it was the Spanish mixture, purchased and coming directly from Spain, since it was no required to say where the rubber was exactly produced. It was a secret to protect from possible competitors and kept hidden for three years by only three people: Francesco Delladio, Lorenzo Delladio and Carla, the accountant.
What at first was only an intuition became the true philosophy of the brand, that is well known for turning difficulties into improvements and progress, turning its limits into opportunities. Since 1928.

This is climbing in Finale Ligure: a day without ifs and buts. Every time you leave that tangled, grey part of the highway your eyes fill up.
I
’m drowning in a sigh as I abandon myself to the waves that gently hold me up, as if they would tell me something.
love and suffer, suffer and love. We also visited the “Grotta dell’Edera” a large open-air cylindrical shape cave rock. We walked on its exposed balcony and climbed enthusiastically on its perfect vault. There’s some ivy on its walls, as if it would hide that solid white rock underneath. We climbed on the most overhanging part, on the perfect vault. An overhang slab. You try to use your feet wisely but shortly after you decide to ignore them. You have to clim with half of your body but the effort is twice. Contradiction or freedom?
A wave holds my nose and makes me cough. It came from Marco and Giulia who have just dived. There’s Igor that, with a pair of sunglasses found somewhere, enjoys the last rays of sunshine. He has nothing to lean on except sand and pebbles that stick to his back. This is climbing in Finale Ligure: a day without ifs and buts. Every time you leave that tangled, grey part of the highway your eyes fill up. You immerse yourself into an ancient village, made of narrow streets and beaten stones where is very easy to stumble.
The temperature slowly got unbearable, especially while climbing. We hid in the thick forest, again. The routes are an anthill of shabby traces and I’m the only one who got hurt by the briar patches whose sharp thorns are like tiger's teeth. We prayed that the heat did not let evaporate that last piece of oily focaccia that whispered intimately cholesterol. What is the taste (and the price) of happiness?
But we didn’t want to stay in that little town. We left it and escaped to the rocky hills behind it, where the colors are shades of orange, red and white and the leaves of the bushes are so thick that can become a shelter from the rays of a sun already high in the sky.
Everything flies away, or so they say. We flew to Noli, on the other part of Finale, on the coast, where the air is salty and people are still half-tanned. There are no woods or hills there. We sink into the Ligurian upside like the stones that we are bouncing on the water. Here also the rock is different: smooth, polished, flake. The rope vibrated in the wind and, while climbing over the rock, the sun went down. The gentle motion of the water still smooth the base of that rocky cliff as the only dividing line between two worlds. The eyes of all of us came back to life, we had no concerns and nothing could worry us.
We moved fast with our heavy backpacks on our backs reaching the “Alveare” area. Here erosion has sculpted and polished the rock in a precarious and perfect balance of shapes, lights and colors. The grain of the limestone is aggressive both for the fingers and for the rubber of the shoes. Here you hope to discover the principles of levitation in some old Eastern textbook to take some weight off those supports. You look at their forms and test their adherence. They are very small. There is nothing and no one that can help you. You isolate yourself. In a few seconds that concentration turns into ecstasy. You
It is precisely for this reason that we dived, as to purify ourselves from what we have seen, to be able to forget it and to look again, like hungry wolves, at those emotions.

npredictable. In this part of the year this is the right expression for the rapidly changing meteorological conditions that in the last weeks, in the Dolomites, have pushed many Ooutdoor sports enthusiasts to despair. Sun, clouds and heavy rains change in a short time, predicting the precise weather conditions is almost impossible even for meteorologists. In such conditions, you must have a lot of experience to plan mountain hikes without taking too many risks.
is nobody and the strong contrast between the clouds still in the sky and the green meadows makes our eyes wink. This beautiful place in Val Gardena is part of the natural parks of the Dolomites. They are the cradle of the natural wealth of this territory and the base of the Unesco World Heritage - the national and natural parks of the Dolomites are unique oasis, surrounded by majestic limestone peaks and rich in geomorphological particularities, flora, fauna and mythological treasures.
We have postponed our hiking experience several times due to these conditions. It is raining heavily, the peak of the Seceda is not visible from Ortisei because of the fog. However, we go to the mountain station with the Seceda cableway in the late afternoon hoping that the sun will still come up.
These idylls are not chimeras but have become accessible to all, regardless of age, ability and interests, thanks to the work of Dolomiti Super Summer, that made this place available for cycling, climbing or simply for walks at the feet of the giants of rock with strollers. In total there are 100 lifts open in all the 12 valleys. Everyone deserves to enjoy a show like this at least once in a lifetime. It’s 8 pm already, the sun disappears behind a thick blanket of clouds and we return to Ortisei, to enjoy a good and deserved dinner in a typical restaurant that our photographer has recommended us. After the darkness, the rain falls again on the Dolomites. But we do not despair, after the rain the sun always comes up.
We get to the top, it's raining so hard that we have to wait in the cable car station. After a while, the blanket of clouds opens and the first rays of sunlight make the surrounding rocks and meadows shine. The clouds have cleared soon and the light is perfect to enjoy the incredible view and to take pictures to remember that. Observing its profile, you can notice that it does not follow a straight line but has a wavy pattern that follows the shape of the sole of the foot, it has a more pronounced concavity in the heel and on the back of the foot. The tread blocks stick out laterally in correspondence with the forefoot and the heel: this is also a feature of Aku’s Elica new technology that ensures excellent distribution of the load on the plantar surface and an extraordinary improvement of the rolling mechanism. Four different and apparently opposed personalities, but united by the same passion for nature. A common point, It's like we've known each other forever.

esegone is surely the most famous mountain of the city of Lecco, both for its profile and for its literary quotations. Four people met at its feet, with their four stories, linked by one great passion: the love for trail running in the mountains. Four faces ready to know each other, to share, to escape for a couple of hours from the city, getting lost in thick woods and mazes of routes that lead to the summit.
light explosion even in the steepest parts of the route. Her face expressed joy, desire to live and have fun. Her life is full of things but that would deserve a separate story; as a child she was a soldier of the Nepalese army, today she is a world-class trail running athlete. And she was there with us. Four different and apparently opposed personalities, but united by the same passion for nature. A common point, It's like we've known each other forever.
Filippo, the most expert of the four people, is a former athlete of the national trail, respectful of the unwritten rules of the mountain, he led us with a decisive step through a wonderful beech forest, so wet that seemed an equatorial jungle. Behind everyone, to keep the group together, there was me, Luca, a true and tenacious mountaineer, transplanted in the city, expert in long-distance running, a lover of challenging climbs and effort, always looking for a place where to feel again at home. In the middle the young Irene, angelic face and a model’s body, an athlete of track races, 400 obstacle specialties; a mix of technique, speed and elegance at the same time. Her young age makes her very curious; curious to discover a new way of running, where the calculation of the thousandths highly takes the second place.
For those who climb a mountain running, the arrival at the top is always a sort of victory, a magical moment, personal and intimate. The satisfaction increased when, still breathless, we looked down towards the path that winds and makes its way through the plants leaving behind the forest and the mist. We felt in the same way, after a lot of hard work we’ve left behind the chaos and the rush of the city life, for an afternoon of total reconnection with nature. And maybe, with ourselves. This is trail running, this is mountain running: respect, effort, curiosity, joy. The same feelings towards your fellow runners. It was time to go home, go down the climb, go back to the woods. Welcome to the Jungle, as Mira said.
Last there was Mira, a Nepalese elf popped out of nowhere. Her sweet and reassuring look hides a crazy, powerful and

T
hey say that running is one of the most boring sports that you can choose. The only gesture of tightening shoelaces is the first of a long series of meticulous things that have to be respected. However, if you call yourself a runner, if you are a runner, you know it's not like that. Running is fundamentally a sport concerning habit and discovery. It means retracing the same street, knowing its defects, its manholes, its turns and recognizing its fixed points: the ice cream shop where you would like to stop, the bar at the corner, the flower shop and the newsagent that you always wave at, because he already knows your run schedule by now. It means remembering how long is your way to get home, how far you are from the finish line, because what matters is to cross that line. Always.
residential buildings that observe that modernity rising like calm brontosaurs. Everything becomes harmonious like the movement of the run while the sunset is kissing the mirrored buildings, that warmth on your skin encourages you not to give up and you remember, once again, because running is anything but boring. Entering CityLife is like going through a parallel dimension, where green dominates the area and redefines the concept of the same old grey Milan. It’s like a video game where you are the protagonist and you have to face the dirt road, the soft grass softens the impact of the run, you go up the stairs and then down testing your resistance. The sound of your steps get lost in the noise of the building of the third tower, as you pass by it seems that something has already changed, you are part of that relentless change. You’d like to explain that to those who judge you and ask you "but do you run all the time?", but you’re slightly jealous because that feeling you get with every workout gives you a freedom that you’ve conquered, a light feeling that you would like was only yours.
It always means discovering something more about yourself, about the effort you are doing at that precise moment, because that's where you face yourself with your thoughts. It also means having the chance to bump into a new neighborhood, when you decide that when that traffic light will turn red you will turn right instead of going straight.
You stop to catch your breath at that traffic light that just before offered you that unexpected chance, you turn and look for the tallest tower in CityLife, in that moment you know you have chosen the right sport. Then it happens again, you just cross the gaze of another runner and you go on running, almost by osmosis, even in his footsteps.
It suddenly happens to find yourself in CityLife Milano, a completely new, green, tidy and but not that ordinary area, that gives you the feeling to not be in the same town anymore. The futuristic geometries of the skyscrapers that rise in the park are mixed with the more classical forms of

It’s now time to leave. To explore, to be moved, to get lost and learn. To follow other footsteps or to abandon the conventions. To travel to understand that you’ve got nothing but your freedom. To be citizens of the world, and stop to listen to anyone who has story to tell. To feel free from every stereotype and catalogue. When you’ll come back, we will be here again, with a special edition dedicated to women. Good summer everyone.
If a little girl grows up always getting told "You can not do this because you're a girl" or "You'll never be strong because you're a woman" then everything will go that way. But when a woman understands that she can do great things, then she has won.
Because there are no limits, try to do what you thought was not allowed: try the impossible. TAMARA LUNGER
