The editorial is a space of freedom. Within it we can express our point of view on a specific topic, a problem, a fact of relevant importance. It has no real informative purposes, as much as criticism, study, commentary. In short, it is a judgment supported by some evidence. Many ignore its potential and underestimate it as a persuasive

platform with unlimited potential for all the socially relevant sectors. ISPO Munich is not only the largest multi-segment expo in the world, but it is also the driver and the means of communication for all these developments.

tool for reading that can arouse interest.

Are you already bored? Within an editorial, attention is usually paid to a topic of particular interest that is the theme of the magazine. Its content must be so strong and incisive in order to leave a mark on the reader. Well, I don’t know how interesting this time can be, but it’s definitely something due. The simultaneous release of the magazine with ISPO Munich, and the resulting editorial, is a sort of anniversary, a tradition that inaugurates the new year. Because in the end, this is where the future is decided, directed and influenced. The future of our magazine and of you consumers.

Do we still need these commercial events? Obviously yes. They are something that has been able to transform over time. Skills, technological innovations, training have led to a better overview and understanding of the market. Behind all this success, there is always a great need for networking, for cooperation, for a constant exchange of ideas.

From January 26th to 29th 2020, more than 2,800 exhibitors will present their latest innovations in Munich, in the largest sports expo in the world. 18 halls and 9 exhibition segments full of ideas and contacts that embrace winter sports and outdoor activities, health and fitness, urban and team sports, visions and trends, innovations, concepts and services, manufacturers and solution providers. A

Be Responsibile, Be Active, Be Creative will be the guiding themes of the event. Sport as a new way of thinking and behaving, of facing techniques and solutions towards responsible and sustainable consumption. Sport as a response and solution to the main social challenges, to the well-being of the person. Even in times when performance is exasperated, exposure is excessive and the range of leisure activities has reached overcrowding. Being active is not just pure exercise, it consciously integrates us with all areas of society. In short, topics able to open a new future perspective.

Despite the continuous growth and opening of new factories, the Bavarian brand has managed to monitor 98% of production as required by the FWF directives. Furthermore, thanks to ProtACT2024, Ortovox has emphasized its clear and tangible sustainable approach. As an FWF member, the company guarantees, among many other aspects, adequate remuneration, safe working conditions and reasonable working hours.

I C E B U G A N D T H E M O ST S U STA I N A B L E TRAIL RUNNING SHOES IN THE WORLD After the Clean Run project promoted through the Open Innovation platform, the Swedish brand Icebug opens another chapter in the involvement of the running community: the Kickstarter campaign for the Outrun shoe, the most sustainable trail running shoe on the market. A provocation with which Icebug wants to shake the industry. Outrun, available since March 2020, is made by minimizing CO2 emissions, has a completely PFC-free sole that integrates 15% of recycled rubber. It has a 100% recycled polyester upper, while the midsole is made of Bloom Foam, a biomaterial derived from algae.

S U S TA I N A B I L I T Y: O D LO I S A I M I N G AT T H E 1 0 0 % Odlo takes a firm position on the issue of sustainability, moving to the use of 100% recycled polyester in its bestselling Performance Warm Eco and Active Warm Eco lines. With this decision, 68% of the baselayers of the 2020/2021 collection will be made with recycled materials or natural fibers from renewable raw materials. Gore-Tex launches a new footwear technology perfect for mountaineering and use at low temperatures. The non-waterproof Gore-Tex Infinium Thermium technology improves comfort and protection, in fact it insulates the foot where it is most needed, around the toes, keeping the feet warm longer in cold weather. Thanks to its exceptional thermal insulation performance per millimeter, the patented Gore-Tex Infinium Thermium insulating material is the thinnest solution for keeping your feet warm. This innovation offers constant performance in wet or dry conditions, moreover, compared to the use of a common insulating material, Gore-Tex Infinium Thermium technology guarantees up to eight times greater heat in the main pressure points of the shoe. The technology is based on human physiology to exploit isolation only where it is needed. The fingers are the area that loses heat faster, causing the unpleasant sensation of having cold feet. Positioned in the toe area, this insulation offers the ideal thermal balance to keep your feet warm and provides the same warmth as traditional bulkier insulation.

It is a noticeable improvement, proven in special laboratory tests and that was immediately adopted by one of the top-of-the-range brands in the mountaineering sector. La Sportiva G5 Evo is an ultra-technical water-repellent boot for high altitude mountaineering and ice climbing. Quick and easy to put on thanks to the external Boa Fit System closure system, it is equipped with quick-drying materials. It features a gaiter with water-repellent stretch cordura bellows up to the ankle with very high resistance to abrasion. The closure of the customizable collar prevents the entry of ice and snow while the fast lacing adjustment, thanks to the Boa Fit System placed outside the gaiter with two anchoring points for optimal distribution of tension, allows a safe closure with gloves and does not require the opening of the zip. Finally, the Gore-Tex Infinium Thermium Insulation Technology wraps the shoe from the front, including the midsole, increasing its thermal insulation at the tip, favoring the use of the boot even in static situations.

Polartec Power Air B Y S I LV I A G A L L I A N I

In 2019 Polartec, leader in innovative and sustainable fabrics, launched Power Air, a textile technology that allows to reduce the dispersion of microfibres by at least five times compared to other “premium” fleeces.

Winter 2020, at Ispo Winter 2020, thanks to a special collaboration with the Swedish outdoor brand Houdini Sportswear. Houdini Mono Air Houdi will in fact be the first product made with the Light version of Power Air, a light and sustainable fabric, recyclable and 73% made from post-consumer recycled content and which uses the efficiency of the encapsulated air to protect the microfibers.

This new fabric construction encases internal yarns, creating individual air pockets that capture body warmth. The surrounding knit casing also serves as a supporting barrier, preventing loose microfibers from shedding out into the environment. Power Air’s two distinct surfaces provide wider design versatility than most insulation to prevent pilling and promote easy layering with other materials. The symmetrical grill, on the inside, retains heat while the external surface is smooth, resistant and anti-rub.

The result is a warm, comfortable and breathable product that disperses five times less microfibres than other first-rate mid-layer fleece. The name “Mono” comes the construction of the fabric with a single yarn, its smooth anti-rubbing surface makes it perfect for winter layering, and its breathability makes it a unique piece ideal for wearing on a cool summer evening. Houdini Mono Air Houdi is inspired by the iconic Houdini Power Houdi, and is characterized by an elasticized slim fit, a comfortable high-necked hood and cuffs with thumb loops. The high collar and soft cuffs retain heat to ensure ideal non-stop comfort. The adjustable hood with visor promotes a fit and protection tailored to the wearer.

Today, in 2020, the brand takes a further step forward, presenting a Lightweight version made with only one yarn, fully recyclable and with a higher post-consumer recycled content, designed to counteract the release of polluting textile fibers and to last longer long over time. Polartec Power Air, in its Lightweight version will be launched in Autumn

Level women’s flames mitt Level’s brand new Flames Mitt, part of its women’s Bliss collection, is the hottest mitt on the market heading into next season.

The Flames, specifically designed for women, offers a 5000 Thermoplus rating and will keep your hands toasty and ultra-comfy in the coldest, most daunting winter conditions. Thermoplus is Level’s certification and guarantee for outstanding insulation and heat retention of the natural warmth of the hands even in the worst climate conditions and certifies the ability of a glove to limit the dispersion of the natural heat of the hand and guarantees the entire production of gloves of the brand, dividing it by type of use and insulation capacity up to temperatures of -30 °. By choosing a Thermoplus product you are therefore sure to wear a glove capable of ensuring optimal maintenance of heat even in the worst climatic conditions. Level’s goal has always been to design products that follow the different morphologies of the hand, while offering different fits. Gloves assembled with the best linings, insulation, membranes and external materials in such a way that the air chamber that is formed can create perfect insulation and ideal breathability especially for those who always have cold hands. The choice of the appropriate material for the construction of gloves is of fundamental importance in order to achieve ergonomic comfort and high thermal insulation. The thermal insulation and the moisture management of gloves made of different materials have been tested both in

a climatic chamber and in outdoor conditions using wireless sensors combined with infrared thermography. The results obtained show substantial differences in terms of thermal comfort between the gloves in the same environmental conditions, proving that Level provides a great thermal comfort in all of its products. Flames Mitt, in particular, presents a modern look thanks to the special preformed feminine cut and is made with three layers of PrimaLoft insulation, a soft insulating and water-repellent material that, unlike down, does not retain water and even in conditions of high humidity keeps your hands warm, ensuring high breathability. The lining that covers the glove is in soft cashmere, an extremely soft and comfortable insulating material. Cashmere is a fiber obtained from a particular type of goat. It is finer, softer and about three times more insulating than normal sheep’s wool, a guarantee in keeping hands warm, dry and giving you the maximum comfort to be able to spend the whole day on the snow. Flames Mitt also features a 3D construction, a special anatomical manufacture that guarantees a natural fit. The technique used for realizing the fingers reduces the possibility of creases on the palms and ensures high sensitivity. In addition there is a thick fur cuff that ensures optimal warmth and comfort. An ideal model to add a touch of glamor to all winter looks.

Relentlessly Responsible and the circularity of PrimaLoft Bio fibers

PrimaLoft Bio Performance Fabric is the newcomer in the ranks of biodegradable technologies of the US brand, global leader in advanced material technology for comfort solutions based on insulation materials and high performance fabrics.

B Y S I LV I A G A L L I A N I

It is a synthetic fabric made from 100% post-consumer recycled material, its fibers break down when exposed to specific environments, such as a landfill or the ocean, and become more attractive to the naturally-occurring microbes found in these places. This process breaks down the basic elements of polyester to transform it into a high-performance material, without compromising its original integrity. As a result, this breakthrough combats the growing problem of microplastics littering the ocean. Its fibers are in fact renewable and functional to a circular economy, and fit perfectly into the mission of the brand called Relentlessly Responsible. To date, PrimaLoft has saved more than 90 million plastic bottles from landfills and transformed them into premium insulation technologies. By 2020, 90% of the brand’s insulation products will have at least 50% post-consumer recycled content, without compromising performance. “PrimaLoft Bio’s intention has always

been to address the eventual end of a garment’s life effectively, finding a solution to the microplastic problem” said Mike Joyce, president and CEO of PrimaLoft. “Biodegradability is an end-of-life solution that works harmoniously with the circularity model. With the ability to renew our fibers, we are contributing to the circular economy, the next frontier of sustainability”. Since 2007 PrimaLoft uses recycled polyester fibers from plastic bottles. Through this traditional mechanical recycling process it is possible to create new high-performance materials. However, this method cannot be used repeatedly without sacrificing the performance characteristics of polyester and continuing to use additional natural resources. That’s why PrimaLoft looked for new ways to close the system: Primaloft Bio Performance Fabric and Primaloft Bio Insulation were born, both available on the market starting from 2020 autumn. In addition, PrimaLoft and the environmental organization Parley for the

34

Oceans have announced a strategic partnership that will take plastic intercepted from remote islands, beaches and coastal communities and use it to manufacture high-performance insulation products. 8 million tonnes of plastic ends up in the ocean per year. This enormous amount of plastic pollution has a tremendous impact on marine life, as it costs the lives of 1 million seabirds and 100,000 marine mammals yearly. The economic consequences are also immense: each year, plastic causes $8 billion in damage to marine ecosystems. The collaboration with PrimaLoft as the official partner of the Parley supply chain, for example with adidas, in the global network is a key step in this fight. PrimaLoft will do everything possible to incorporate and implement the AIR (Avoid. Intercept. Redesign) strategy, to reduce the company’s plastic footprint and will join forces in the fight against marine plastic pollution.

Enviro Splitboard Camp

BY DENIS PICCOLO

Last winter the Ingloriousplitboarders were born - completely off the books - a group of riders with a strong anti-competitive desire. In their “birth declaration” we read:

We are inglorious. Because we don’t care about getting to the top and even about the meters of difference in height climbed, what we care about is “to go”; pour sweat and spit blood, laughing. We are not made for glory, because we hate selfishness and we disdain competition for its own sake, fighting against the demon of protagonism. We are not made for speed, we like to move fast, but with the slowness necessary to appreciate every moment and to feel in touch with the places we cross. We give equal importance to every moment spent in nature, on our splits. In a wood, in a steep canal or in high mountains. In the company of friends, strangers or in total solitude. On powder or on ice. For us, the “how much” will never count more than the “how”. For us, the top will never count more than ONE top. For us, performance will never count more than a shared moment. We are not a crew, we are not a club, and not

even an association. We are a free splitboarder collective that doesn’t want to be framed or pigeonholed. So we’re not even that.

was precisely dedicated to trees and their fundamental importance within the natural system.

We are - simply - inglorious. Because glory is not for us.

For this reason they’ve explored some areas of the Val di Peio characterized by the presence of secular larches - which the Inglorious have indeed hugged - and the documentary Treeline was screened, focusing on the surprising characteristics of the trees and their way of creating a system.

Exactly one year later, after some spontaneous get-togethers, the Inglorious decided to organize the first Enviro Splitboard Camp, an appointment able to fully express their philosophy. The goal of the camp, in fact, was not only to share two days of splitboarding in pristine areas within the Stelvio Park but also - and above all - to create a continuity between outdoor activities and environmental issues. That’s why Luca Albrisi and Luca Dalpez - supported by the Alpine Guide Tiziano Canella and in collaboration with the environmental association Selva Urbana - proposed two days of split trips alternating with the screening of documentaries and moments of discussion regarding some of the main environmental issues related to the territories mountain. This first camp, called “Hug a Tree” edition,

37

In this way, it was possible at the same time to deepen theoretical environmental aspects, touch the areas strictly affected by these issues and hypothesize possible concrete actions to be implemented. The intent of the next appointments will be to address different environmental issues based on the chosen territories and the problems connected to them but keeping the same Inglorious spirit.

AKU Minima Designed to Reduce Exactly these days, at ISPO Winter 2020, Aku is presenting its new and innovative footwear with low environmental impact to the world. We are talking about the Minima model, winner of the prestigious ISPO Award Gold which awards the best outdoor urban lifestyle footwear for the FW 2020 season.

A winter model with a design inspired by traditional mountain shoes which was awarded for the important value expressed in the search for low environmental impact design solutions, confirming the leading role of the Montebelluna company on the theme of sustainability and responsible commitment. We reached out Giulio Piccin, Aku’s product manager, to find out more about this innovative product which sets the foundations for a reference standard in responsible footwear design and production. Hi Giulio, how was the Minima model born? Minima was the arrival point of a study that lasted over two years. We are the first and only outdoor industry company to have calculated and certified the degree of environmental impact of a shoe, our Bellamont Plus model, according to the EPD Environmetal Product Declaration protocol, a way to understand what are the real impacts, from the production of raw materials to the end of life of a product.

Thanks to this analysis we have identified that one of the areas of greatest impact is the leather and this has led us to focus on the type of leather that minimizes our footprint. We have selected a leather that the tannery calls Zero Impact, a metal free product that is made through an innovative tanning process as it reduces the use of water. Furthermore, it is the tannery itself that goes to the slaughterhouse to take the fresh leather, avoiding in this way that they are salted to block the degradation process. A long and complicated process that leads to a significant impact reduction. The other fundamental aspect on which we focused was to find a system to use as little leather as possible. With Dani tannery, our partner for years, we have worked on a leather that was not only Zero Impact but that was finished not only on the upper part but also on the back. This is because a full grain leather with a defect cannot be used and is not accepted by the customers and consumers. The discarded parts were then taken up and reversed to make collars and heels. So the product was designed to dress the waste without damaging

38

the aesthetics of the product. One way to give even more style to the product, the idea was no longer focusing on a purely aesthetic design but, within the creation processes, having a connection with responsible actions, finding a new system to take steps forward in reducing our impact. Sustainability and responsible commitment have been much debated issues lately. Often we wonder if they are not just a trend of the moment. The work you did with Minima, on the other hand, was a long and complicated process which reveals instead how fundamental these aspects are for Aku. It is true because we have always realized mountain shoes to provide a product not to a simple consumer but to a user who is aware of and who buys an item for its quality and durability. We are totally out of the fashion world where the main goal is to convince a consumer to change the product as quickly as possible because it becomes obsolete. We still have in our collection some products from 40 years ago and we are fortunate to be a local producer. Each of our models is designed, developed

and produced by us, therefore we have a truly direct contact with the suppliers of raw materials. In the case of the Dani tannery, which supplies us with the leather, there is a partnership relationship, they too push a lot on the issues of social and environmental responsibility and with them we can also work on projects out of the ordinary. Minima is the arrival point of an important study but also the starting one for a new reference standard in the production of responsible footwear. That’s right, it is a constantly work in progress. Aku’s footwear design is born with dedication to being responsible, aiming at reducing leather waste during manufacturing by re-utilizing it in various components of the product, while CO2 emissions produced during the entire Minima life cycle have been compensated for by supporting United Nations initiatives for climate neutrality (UNFCCC).

mental impact. The second is to reduce it. The third step, which must be functional to the first two, is to compensate for what we have not been able to reduce. Without this passage the first two aspects are nothing more than something made to follow a trend. Once we have reached the order quantities we will compensate the CO2 emitted and to do that we will use the United Nations platform. All this without considering the fact that the tannery itself already performs a compensation action on the leather that provides us. Future projects? Are you planning to apply the studies done for Minima to other models as well? It could be. It is a concept that took a long time so now that we have seen that it works we could also think of extending this process to other models. The ISPO Award Gold award is a recognition that, in addition to making us very happy, has confirmed once again that the direction taken is the right one.

We have done, according to the United Nations, are the first two fundamental steps that each brand should take. The first thing is to calculate your environ-

Ortovox has always had safety as a central and fundamental aspect of its corporate mission. This term does not refer only to the protection offered through the brand’s products, but also the protection of people, of the environment and of the animal world. Sustainability can and must be declined also through a careful control of the Tasmanian farms producing wool or in the mountains, a task destined to last over time and to be pursued with conviction and dedication.

T

he commitment to fair trade wool is an aspect that distinguishes Ortovox since 1988. The protection of people and animals led the brand, after more than two years of talks with wool farmers, suppliers and producers, to initiate its own wool standard, the Ortovox Wool Promise (OWP). This standard focuses upon animal welfare, farm and land management, and slaughter and transport. More than 60 indicators are checked regularly on the farms by a certified, independent auditor. In addition, Ortovox once a year also brings together the various parties from along the wool supply chain and provides a platform for critical discussion, transparency and new solutions. The Ortovox Wool Promise, in particular, is divided into 4 fundamental points.

1. No to mulesing. A procedure that involves the removal of strips of wool-bearing skin from around the breech of a sheep to prevent flystrike. Mulesing causes to animals unnecessary pain and stress. In Europe it is forbidden, while in Australia and New Zealand, from which almost 90% of the world’s wool comes from, this technique is still implemented. Ortovox, supplying only from 100%

mulesing free farms and carrying out a careful control on its farms, puts animal welfare first, and for the OWP it has defined 64 more points which guarantee that their sheep really thrive.

2. Protecting nature. Wool is a natural fiber and therefore a holistic product. It is a part of the natural cycle that’s why it is fundamental that farmers practice a sustainable agriculture in order to provide the ideal conditions for both humans and animals, today and for generations to come.

3. Personal relationships with farmers and collaborators with which Ortovox has entered into multi-year contracts and where it regularly visits on site. In fact, since 2010 the brand has obtained Merino wool for mountainwear from six 60,000 sheep from six farms selected in Tasmania, all places that meet the high quality requirements and follow the broad and detailed guidelines of the Ortovox Wool Promise wool standard. The relationship with breeders is based on friendship and mutual trust, a close and friendly collaboration that becomes the source of new strengths that can really make a difference.

41

4.

Transparency all the way to the source for dealers and clients. It is in fact possible to trace the development of Ortovox products up to their origin, from the Tasmania sheep farms. Transparency and monitoring of the complex delivery chain represent a great challenge, but at the same time also a question that is very close to the brand and for this reason it becomes of fundamental importance to know the people who are at the beginning of it all: farmers and producers of the clean wool.

The protection of people and animals led the brand, after more than two years of talks with wool farmers, suppliers and producers, to initiate its own wool standard, the Ortovox Wool Promise (OWP).

Nike Trail Genealogy. Nike’s trail running history started in 1978 when a team of America’s best mountaineers hiked to basecamp, on the world’s second-highest peak K2, wearing Nike runnings shoes. From the beginning, Nike has had all the right components to bring to trail running: lightweight with traction, materials innovation, lockdown, ergonomic lacing.

In fact, Nike’s first true trail running shoe was born almost unitended. In 1978, John Roskelley and Rick Ridgeway were among the members of the first American expedition that reached the top of K2 unassisted by oxygen. Nike decided to donate $10,000 to their project despite not yet having a line of out-door or trail product, on the other hand it provided everyone with a pair of its newest running shoes, the Nike LDV, for the 110-mile hike to basecamp.

1984 Nike Escape But we we should wait until 1984 to have the first shoe specifically designed for an outdoor/trail use. We are talking about the Nike Escape model designed by Mark Parker himself. Trail running was emerging, and Parker and his fellow trail runners were wearing the sturdiest shoes they could find, which at the time were stability shoes.

The LDVs were light and comfortable, as opposed to traditionally heavy, leath-er hiking boots. The trail for the approach and decent hiking was pretty rough. The hikers found that the LDVs breathed better, were more comfortable and the increased flexibility made them function better than a more traditional trekking boot. Roskelley and Ridgeway came back enthusiastically from the expedition with many suggestions for Nike on how to adjust designs for lightweight hiking shoes.

“I literally laid paper out on the hood of a car and sketched the shoe” Parker explained later. He applied the learnings from the Pegasus, which he had re-cently designed, adding a heavier outrigger and more durable upper to the Es-cape. Parker realized some samples and passed them out to a few fellow trail runners who immediately loved them. After earning those the rave reviews, the Escape was dropped into the line for the following season.

Back in the days, Mark Parker, footwear designer and trail runner enthusiast, was looking for unique running shoes for the discipline he loved. He was the one who designed the company’s first official trail running shoe, tested by trail runners.

1989 Nike Air Wildwood ACG

1997 Nike Air Terra Sertig & Air Terra Albis

In a few years trail running grew as a sport and athletes needed a more serious off-road shoe. In 1989 Nike launched his second model specifically designed for this discipline. The Nike Air Wildwood ACG unlike the Escape, differed for its bright colors by presenting a sole built for rough terrain and an entirely syn-thetic upper perfect for rain and mud. The materials were light, ideal even in wet conditions, while the micro-perforated panels ensure breathability.

The Nike Air Terra Sertig and Air Terra Albis models, also by the same Peter Fogg, are from the same years. The first model combined elements of a trail running shoe with a hiking boot, thanks to the abrasion-resistant tip and mudguard and heel breathable mesh upper. Very low profile midsole with the Zoom Air unit in the forefoot and a large volume Air-Sole unit in the forefoot, combined with the special podular construction, offered stability allowing the foot to react and respond to uneven surfaces.

1993 Nike Air Pegasus RD

1999 Nike Air Terra Goatek

It combined the best features of the Air Pegasus model with greater robustness ideal for outdoor environments. Incorporating waterproofing materials, beefing up the outsole and reinforcing the toe, the Pegasus RD was the ideal shoe to go from the road to the trails.

Last to close the millennium, which featured a unique and innovative outsole technology called G-Tek sticky rubber. The sticky rubber was constructed into pads, a pattern that resembled the hoofs of a goat climbing steep mountain cliffs, from which the name Goatek also comes from. The shoe also featured a full heel to toe medial posting and an upper resistant to water and abrasion.

1997 Nike Air Humana Designed by the famous designer Peter Fogg, was the first trail shoe to incorporate a fabric wrap around the midsole. Highly innovative the fabric midsole provided an abrasion resistance sidewall and stability. The forefoot flex grooves provided maximum flexibility combined with the bidirectional traction configuration provided support during steep uphill or downhill runs. The Air unit in the heal and the forefoot Zoom Air made it a highly comfortable cushioned shoe, comfortable on the trails as well as the city streets.

2005 Nike Air Oriziba Nike Air Orizaba ushered in a new era of Nike Trail Running. This shoe was named after Pico de Orizaba the highest mountain in Mexico and the thrid highest in North America and featured innovative materials like Gore-Tex XCR which created exceptional waterproofing and was laminated so as not to im-pact breathability. Zoom Air units in the heel and forefoot made for a super runnable shoe with ample cushioning and shock absorption.

Let’s arrive to nowadays with the Nike Air Zoom Terra Kiger and Nike Zoom Terra Wildhorse models now in their fifth edition.

Nike Air Zoom Terra Kiger 5 It’s a shoe designed to be used on difficult and rocky terrain, thanks to the multi-directional fins with a clear and decisive shape and the soft rubber tread that facilitate contact with the trails and offer greater traction on wet surfaces. The perforated upper removes moisture and allows greater breathability.

Nike Zoom Terra Wildhorse 5 It’s a trail shoe designed to offer maximum comfort, lightness and stability. It ensures an ideal gait on rough terrain, thanks to the multilayer and breathable fabric. The sturdy flat sole protects the foot, while the Zoom Air unit in the heel cushions the step on trails and dirt roads. Up to date it is probably the best known trail running shoe from the Oregon company and the preferred choice for mountain runners.

Nike Pegasus 36 Trail Last addition to the Nike Trail family is the Pegasus 36 Trail. With a renewed look and new performances, Nike’s most versatile crossover returns for the first time in several years. The Nike Air Zoom Pegasus 36 Trail takes inspiration from the legendary Pegasus model and presents the same shape, the same fit and the same feeling as running on roads. The perforated mesh upper ensures comfort and breathability, while the Zoom Air units cushions the pace. Finally, the lugs on the sole ensure maximum traction for the uphill run.

The perfect arrival point of a story that began many years ago thanks to the love for outdoor life that has always distinguished the brand’s DNA and that contributes to making Nike what it is still today.

Angus Rowley. Wool Guru.

BY DENIS PICCOLO

Mons Royale’s wild soul. Merino wool guru. Breeder and Freeskier. From the unspoiled nature of Lake Wanaka, in New Zealand, Mons Royale imagines and creates technical items made in merino wool with high performance and unmistakable style. Technical clothing that nullifies the compromise between performance and aesthetics, carefully designed and wearable in the most diverse situations, from sport to everyday life. But also for grazing sheep, just like Gus Rowley does! If one day you happen to meet him, from a first and quick glance he would certainly look like anything but a normal sheep breeder: his arms, covered with a clearly visible series of

tattoos, and his style are very reminiscent of those who have lived fully the 90s punk skate/surf/snow scene. Obviously also his pick up (with which he transports his beloved sheep) has a strong personality, the windows are covered with Armada Skis and various ski resorts stickers. Gus is a longtime friend of Hamish Acland, founder of Mons Royale and his faithful companion of freeride adventures, over the years the two have created an inseparable bond but the thing that brings them closer today is not their passion for skiing but the sheep: thousands and thousands of sheep!

“I’m the first Mons Royale fan! From the first day up to now: even when I treated wool for another brand I already admired the lines of their clothes and their philosophy. Over time it became a successful brand and when Hamish decided to involve me directly as a supplier first and then to help tell the story of our wool and of the ZQ certification, I said absolutely yes. I really believe in ZQ certification! It is the highest distinguishing mark in the wool industry for animal welfare and for the responsible use of the territory: it helps to make consumers aware of the purchase of their garments and the impact they cause in nature. The purchase of a merino item from a company under the ZQ program is the smartest choice for those who want a technical and reliable but sustainable garment with zero environmental impact”.

- ANGUS ROWLEY

48

49

Gus makes the breeding of merino sheep seem a beautiful, poetic but at the same time hard and demanding experience. When you hear him speak, he mixes in a whirlwind of enthusiasm anecdotes of life lived during summer grazing in the southern New Zealand Alps in medium-high mountain terrain, where the sheep graze freely in contact with nature with its winds, its temperatures sometimes rigid and sudden rains, and freeride descents, perhaps on the same terrain.

Mountain, wool and ski expert, he is proud to breed his sheep with respect and passion in an environment like this because they live almost like wild animals; they can totally express themselves as if they were 100% free, their well-being is a real priority for him! Maybe he doesn’t know it or maybe he just doesn’t give weight to it but it represents a new way of breeding: the one that connects with a clearly visible line the people that buy and use the product to the brands that realize it up to the individual breeders and their sheep!

The ZQ merino certification of Mons Royale products. ZQ Merino is the brand that certifies ethical wool in the world. It represents a better quality of life for animals, for our planet, for us and for you. ZQ breeders believe in sustainable breeding and live for ZQ values. Each product certified by the ZQ brand is eco sustainable, ethical, traceable and is based on 5 fundamental values: 1. Animal welfare. ZQ Merino sheep live free in nature, fed, hydrated, never subjected to strong stress. In addition to this, the ZQ sheep are not fed artificially, they do not come in contact with GMO food and obviously mulesing - a painful removal of a flap of skin in the perianal area to prevent parasite infestation - is not practiced by any ZQ breeder. 2. Environmental sustainability. ZQ Merino wool comes only from breeders who meet the highest environmental standards. All ZQ farmers are assessed and controlled by third party trainers and auditors qualified to ensure compliance with rigorous standards. 3. Quality fiber. Each fleece is hand selected by expert wool classifiers to ensure that only the finest fibers are inserted into the yarn. The ZQ process ensures that the quality of the wool is consistent in the whiteness, strength, low variation and contamination tests. 4. Social responsability. ZQ Merino breeders are linked, thanks to their passion and dedication, to careful management of the territory, with particular attention to health and safety. 5. Traceability. ZQ Merino wool is traceable from the farm from which it comes from to the finished garment. Farmers are connected to the brands that buy their wool and vice versa!

The Antarctic Peninsula is remote, cold, hostile. Yet, it is also a paradise for all skiing and mountaineering lovers.

ammut Pro Team Athlete Caro North went to the discovery of this pristine land and its countless snow-covered islands. The mountain guide Guillaume Martina and captain Mark van de Weg were with her, and they talk about their journey to Antarctica in an exclusive four-episode Mammut web series. The idea to reach Antarctica came from the photographer who accompanied Caro on this adventure, he had already explored those lands in the past and was immediately enchanted by the wild places, remote from any civilization, extremely exciting and attractive. From the first episode, which went online last December 27th, we have been able to follow Caro, Guillaume and Mark on their journey from Patagonia to the infamous Drake Passage, circumnavigating Cape Horn with a small sailboat, a real challenge as it is one of the most notorious sea passages, renowned for its harsh weather and turbulent waters. 4 or 5 days of sailing away from the mainland, without knowing what is going on, a fierce and impressive experience. The weather forecasts must be carefully studied and planned, but there is always a veil of uncertainty linked to being completely exposed to the might of the sea. The sailing boat was like a nutshell being tossed up and down on the waves, but perhaps in this lies its extreme beauty. We then followed them as they finally landed in Antarctica, a completely different environment from what can be found elsewhere. For weeks, they saw only white, blue and gray. There were no colors. And, other than research stations, there is no civilization. You are extremely far away from the mainland and completely reliant on your own resources. The landscapes are wild and harsh, the glaciers, crevasses and snowdrifts are wild and enormous. There is little information and few maps and the weather can change from one minute to the next. We saw Caro, Guillaume and Mark enjoy breathtaking ski ascents and descents followed by icy storms with roaring waves and minimal visibility. Then ice climbing on rock and ice formations. We followed them in a month of absolutely incredible impressions, experiences and feelings that leave vivid and indelible memories.

Ferrino, 150 years of outdoors BY GIAN LUCA GASCA

68

It all started thanks to an invention, as in the most classic of Italian stories. One hundred and fifty years ago Cesare Ferrino, in his paint shop at the 107 in via Nizza in Turin, developed a formula able to waterproof canvases and fabrics. An idea that would revolutionize the outdoor world,

B

ut let’s start from the beginning. In the Italy of the late nineteenth century, the mountain was not a hobby for normal people, it was just a playground for few. For nobles and adventurers with the opportunity to spend a long time away from the chores of everyday life, a decidedly small market and, in the immediate term, not very interested in changing their habits in terms of products. Ferrino’s first customers were other companies such as Fiat or the Italian Army. The former used waterproof canvases to realize hoods of cars while the latter used them to cover and repair military vehicles. The explorers arrived a few years later, towards the end of the century. Famous names such as the one of the famous Duke of Abruzzi, or the biellese photographer Vittorio Sella and still the himalaysta Mario Piacenza.

short time Cesare Ferrino transformed his company by expanding the sector of competence to the manufacture of waterproof tents for the outdoors. The goal was to make them resistant, lightweight and easily transportable, therefore suitable for adventures in self-sufficiency, in places where it would have been necessary to move frequently carrying all the gears on your shoulders. Various models were born such as the Alpina tent, resistant to strong winds; or the Sangone, small and cheap.

The true revolution In the summers of the 1960s, caravans of cars left the large cities of the north in search of fresh air and pristine environments, it was the period of summer closures that emptied urban centers to fill mountains and coastal areas. Those who left easily had a Ferrino branded tent or some camping accessory from the Turin company in their luggage. This was one of the first true brand revolutions, together with the great Himalayan companies of the seventies and eighties.

Their explorations in remote places of the planet today belong to history, they tell about a romantic era of discovering the vast white areas of the Earth. About an unknown adventure that no longer exists today. For these experiences, they needed a new type of tent, a shelter that needed to be waterproof, resistant and easily transportable and who, if not Cesare Ferrino, would have been able to satisfy them?

Ferrino has then became a well known leading company in the outdoor sector, and many people started to use its products, even among Himalayan climbers. For this reason, at the end of the seventies a young Reinhold Messner decided to contact the brand asking for a made-to-measure tent. He was chasing the dream of being the first man

They were the first to take Ferrino tents to the extreme, to test them in prohibitive conditions, indelibly marking what was the entrepreneurial direction of the company. In a

69

a dream for glory, personal success or simply to say that the impossible does not exist. Ferrino offers them safe shelters, warm cradles of life in the raging storm. Perhaps this is the true distinctive character of Ferrino, the one that for 150 years has uniquely identified the company. Ferrino is a family. It can be seen by observing the production chain, the commitment made in the process of developing new products: from the idea to the field tests to the marketing, each phase is carefully followed. The same care that is the company has for repairing its products every day for customers loyal to the backpacks, tents, sleeping bags with which they carry out their small personal adventures. Milestones in which Ferrino is proud to be present, just as it is proud to be alongside men and women who spend their days helping others. For fifty years, in fact, it has been offering support to humanitarian missions and helping people affected by wars or natural disasters through a line of products designed for first aid.

to climb all the 14 eight thousanders and to accomplish that he needed some products designed specifically for his needs, including strong, light and resistant tents to the extreme weather conditions encountered where the air becomes rarefied. When he turned to Ferrino he did it with clear ideas: he needed a dome-shaped geodesic tent to withstand the strong winds of the Himalayas. The company satisfied him and in the meantime understood the potential of this sector and how much interfacing with figures like Messner can benefit in the study of new solutions. After that began a fruitful dialogue with climbers and explorers that still goes on today. The mountaineers were happy to be able to work with the company and to put their hands on what would be the products with which they will face their challenges; and the same thing applied to Ferrino who could draw inspiration for new projects. When in October 1986 Reinhold Messner accomplished his challenge on the 14 8000m peaks Ferrino was with him exactly as it was with Silvio Mondinelli in 2004, when the mountaineer from Brescia became the second Italian to climb all 8000m peaks without additional oxygen. Ferrino has always been a proud protagonist of these goals and continues to be today by offering its experience and expertise to the Poles engaged in the difficult expedition at K2 during winter time, the last great challenge of the classic Himalayas, as well as to the Basque climber Alex Txikon that after being the first to reach (together with Simone Moro and Ali Sadpara) the summit of the Nanga Parbat during winter continues to seek records in the coldest and most difficult season. Ferrino is a family for all these guys (and older guys) who challenge themselves every day chasing

Flexibility, innovation and continuous research are the three characteristics of the Turin-based company which this year celebrates its 150 anniversary. A century and a half of experience that is put on the table every day in the design of the product of the future, without ever forgetting the link with the consumer. For this reason, Ferrino has been organizing high-altitude tented camps for 26 years where it is possible to test high-end products, those of the Highlab line, which includes equipment designed to withstand extreme conditions. The opinion of climbers, hikers, but also of simple walkers, counts. It matters because it is thanks to them that the small shop of Cesare Ferrino has transformed, becoming over time a guarantee for the outdoors, in terms of quality and reliability.

The regret of a renunciation T E X T BY L EO N A R D O PA N I Z Z A PHOTOS BY ELISA BESSEGA

I

t’s 8 pm, the sun is going down and I am putting my feet in wet and cold socks before putting them into frozen shoes. The old stove failed to dry anything in just more than a half an hour. I look around and I seem to be in an abandoned building inhabited by homeless people. Garbage thrown into the wood drawer, a few stoves, a cot with worn clothes piled up, four liters of grappa on the shelf. How did I get here?

temple where nature reigns supreme, with its own beauties and difficulties. We often turn to see the Pale di San Martino, the Catinaccio, the Marmolada, the panorama is endless, you can even see the three peaks of Lavaredo in the distance. After 8 hours of almost continuous walking we stop at the Paolo and Nicola refuge, it is very comfortable, well insulated, functional, equipped with the right comforts. As we warm up a little water to rehydrate the dinner, we look at the starry sky and glimpse Malga Valmaggiore, another place where the redevelopment works are already well underway.

I am in Malga Lagorai, the nerve center of the discussed redevelopment project that involves several structures along the over 80 km hike trail that goes from Rolle pass to Panarotta, in Trentino. It is the third day that I walk in the pouring rain and after 44.3 kilometers I am forced to abandon. I put the front light on and start walking towards Ziano, I have more than 10 kilometers to go on a forest road to meet a friend who will take me home.A few weeks before leaving for Translagorai, Elisa began drying soups, couscous and energy bars in order to be completely independent and try to have as few garbage as possible to carry in our backpacks. At the end of drying, we have 1.5 kg of stocks that occupy a truly irrelevant space, to be divided for 3 nights and 4 days. I am so happy when I load my backpack: with a tent, sleeping bag, mattress, bread, some sausages and some cheese bought in Predazzo, it weighs less than 15 kg in total.

The following morning we are awake at 5, we have to take advantage of the very first part of the day because rain is expected. In fact, we arrive at the Coldosè refuge after a few hours in wet clothes. The water increases and reluctantly we decide to stop for a day. This is also part of the game and we already knew that one of the main attractions of Lagorai was its harshness, the difficulty in crossing it, the possibility of experiencing sensations that in many mountains, as in the city, have no more space. Loneliness, fear, the sense of limit imposed by nature, the need to choose, are situations that are increasingly difficult to experience. And while you are usually willing to fly over this lack in such spectacular places as the Dolomites, you would not be willing to do that on a mountain chain that does not present equally aesthetic views. The Lagorai is ugly and bad, but precisely in this characteristic lies its attractiveness, it is not a mountain that can be sold off or tamed too easily.

We reach Passo Rolle by public transport and as we move away from the road I feel the feeling of being swallowed up by a living being, first the wood that breathes, then the unmistakable stones that make the Lagorai a sacred place, a pavement of some strange

74

75

We have been there for a few hours and there is no shortage of things to do, the wood to be cut, cleaning pots and cups, filling the tanks with water at the spring. The refuge must be kept clean by those who live in it, it is something that lives with the people who occupy it. There is no need to manage refuges, rather to educate those who use them.

de to take the road downhill and put the wet clothes on for one last time. It is dark and it continues to rain.

Near the top of Litegosa we see some white spots, it is the snow. I take it in my hands, we are witnessing the first snowfall of the season. Arrived at the crossroads for the refuge, we decide without even talking to each other that we will go down in altitude, spending a night in a tent in these conditions is not really possible and continuing on the ridge has become dangerous. It is 5 pm and we have been walking for 10 hours in the rain when we reach Malga Lagorai. Damp wood is hard to ignite in the old stove.

As we descend into the night I think about the regret caused by the renunciation. What we set out to do was not a big undertaking, of course, but crossing the Lagorai without leaving a trace, using only dried food independently, wanted to be a message, a demonstration of the fact that it is possible to move around respecting the vocation of the places. The mountain is not something to bend to satisfy your will, it must not be just an accomplishment. The renunciation teaches us that basically we are only raindrops that end up in a large lake. Now we need to have the courage to be under the downpour, with our own means and with the enthusiasm of a young mountaineering that can hardly be measured through the canons of classic mountaineering. In the Dolomites, for example, it is now possible to practice climbing that does not damage the rock, and while the sacred monsters of climbing persist in putting nails and drilling, more and more young people practice Trad Climbing trying not to leave a trace of their passage. In the same way the two of us passed by respecting what is one of the last unspoiled places in Trentino. Reaching the car we realize that Giovanni is the first human being we have seen for days, the mountain is made of peaks, times, performances, discussions, but also of friends willing to sacrifice themselves to make a failure less tiring and we hope to do not be the last ones to live it like this.

Then the cell phone rings, it's Giovanni, a friend of numerous adventures who, without many words, intends to pick us up in Ziano di Fiemme. From where we are we have another 3 hours to go. A trail well traced on large forest. After a brief consultation we deci-

Once again we realize how severe mountain life is and how much it can teach to new generations like ours, because it is in the chaos of the city that ideas meet and flourish, but it is in the solitude of the Lagorai that we manage to grasp them to become aware of them.

The day after we anticipate the alarm, we have to move a lot and the weather seems to get worse. We start at 4 with the front lights on and go down into the woods, lowering our altitude, we enter the exploration territory of M49–Papillon, the bear that for some days has been beating the area in search of freedom. Our paths cross by chance and I wonder if we are not looking for the same thing after all. It starts to rain and we proceed in silence, concentrate, Elisa's camera stops working because of the cold. After a few hours we find shelter for a quick meal at the Teatin refuge: a few wooden planks that close the entrance to what is a wet and cold cave.

The mountain is not something to bend to satisfy your will, it must not be just an accomplishment. The renunciation teaches us that basically we are only raindrops that end up in a large lake.

Mongolia on foot. The right speed to look at life. BY M A R TA M A N ZO N I

Worth knowing: Mongolia is the country with the lowest population density in the world. About a third of the population is nomadic. The predominant religion is Tibetan Buddhism. The capital is Ulan Bator. Much of its territory is covered by steppes, with mountains in the North and West part and the Gobi desert in the South part.

78

79

The last time we met Tamara Lunger, summer was about to begin. She had told us about her decision to stop for a year and to have planned her next, unusual, expedition: a litmus test to understand if she could still trust her body, a journey on foot in Mongolia.

Tell us about your trail. «My friend Franz and I were on the North-West border, we walked from Zengel, on foot, to the Altaj mountains, and we climbed the Malchin Peak (4,050m). Usually we had breakfast and then left around 8.30, often we walked until 8 pm. One difficulty we encountered was understanding the names of the places where we were travelling, because those on the GPS did not match those on the map». How did you set up the expedition? «We wanted to be completely self sufficient, so we had everything we needed with us, including tents and food. We brought the bare essentials to prevent the backpack from being too heavy. We practically ate only noodle soup and we suffered a little hunger but it wasn't that hard, indeed it was a way to get rid of so many weights. I had already suffered hunger on previous expeditions but on those occasions it had been different, I had been panicked. In Mongolia, however, it was only a liberation». Mongolia is an unspoiled country with very few connections. How did you organize the whole trip? «We left without particular plans, we wanted to have a free-style trip, improvising. We traveled from the 10th to the 30th of September, almost in low season, without meeting many tourists. Usually travel is not allowed in the country without an official guide but Franz and I managed to find an agreement, according to which we had to connect for thirty minutes every day with the military, in order for them to know where we were. Local people are not used to see many tourists and when they met us they were full of joy, hospitable, and eager to help us. We couldn't speak with them because nobody knew English but they were very open, curious and asked us many questions».

80

What feelings did you have during the trip? «I felt an extraordinary connection with people and nature, I felt loved in that wild context and when I returned to the city I suffered a lot of nostalgia. It was an introspective and profound journey and when it ended I didn't want to go back to civilization. During other expeditions I was happy when I was finally able to take a shower, while this time I really didn't want to separate from the pure and authentic environment in which I was». How did your body react? «For me it was important to go on an adventure where the destination was not the top of a mountain. I had to understand if I could still trust my body, because for years I had been having problems with my knees and lately also with my back. Every day we walked with a heavy backpack for many hours and I felt that finally, after all the work I had done on myself, my body was playing together with me. I realized that even though I hadn't trained during the previous year, I felt fit. I thought that if I went back to training in a more intelligent and aware way, listening to myself more, it would have gone better and better». What activities have you practiced over the past year? «I climbed a lot and I think it helped me forget the pain. When you practice resistance, you often feel pain somewhere and you think a lot, when you climb instead you are immersed in the movement, fully concentrated, and this has given me the opportunity not to think too much about physical discomfort». What had been your impressions about the local population? «One day we passed by a Gher, a traditional 'mobile' home of nomadic populations, and when the family saw us asked us if we wanted to have a tea. We than-

ked them but declined the invitation because we had to continue. Shortly after, two girls of the family came running towards us, giving us a bag full of cheese and leaving immediately afterwards. I was moved because I thought it was a wonderful gesture, of a genuineness and spontaneity difficult to find nowadays. I remember the five-year-old girls who prepared food and the ten-year-old boys who went to pasture with flocks of goats». Is there an anecdote in particular about the trip you want to share? «We always slept in a tent except for one night when a family hosted us in their Gher. The house was modest and humble and the people were simple and joyful, we shared meals and talked a bit with gestures and then we slept in their room». What did you think about during the long hours of walking? «When you see realities different from yours you realize that perhaps in the West we have not yet understood the meaning of life. You have to savor the moments more, enjoy loved ones and try to make your dreams come true. Look in the mirror in the morning and see a happy person. Style and quality of life greatly influence the mood and for this reason I decided to say many more no: now when I have to take a decision I listen to myself more because I have to feel that it is really the right choice for me, to get to this awareness I needed to isolate myself in order to know myself more. It seems to me that many people today no longer know who they are, there are too many distractions, moreover we are increasingly distant from nature, which is our source of life». Have you ever thought about building your own family? «When I was a child, I thought that by 20 years old I would have children, a husband and

82

a house, then things went differently. There was a period during which when somebody mentioned children I always felt annoyed but I think it was a way to protect myself because I guess every woman, in her depth, has this desire. Now I don't think about it anymore, everything that will happen will be the right thing». How will you go back to training? «After Mongolia I will have to focus on endurance because for the winter season I have to be fast and strong, especially on my legs, and I have to understand if my body is ready to face an expedition». What did you take home from Mongolia? «Sometimes life is painful, but often suffering is linked to a lesson that you have to learn, maybe you will understand the reason why in a few years. I went through a difficult period, during which I had many doubts and questions: I didn't know if my body would allow me to go on other expeditions, if the sponsors would remain with me, what my future would be. When I decided to dedicate a period to myself I immediately understood that I was on the right path. I took a self-healing course which taught me to love and accept myself as I am. Through kinesiology I changed my diet, then I spent two weeks in Sri Lanka doing meditation and yoga. The moment you understand the meaning of your journey you get a new energy, which allows you to realize your desires. More than a year has passed by and I'm satisfied, I’m already seeing the first results. Mongolia has given me back my self-confidence.

I didn't know how this trip would end, but I was positive and now I can say I'm happy with how it went».

T

he desire to put skis on our feet is huge. Some of us have already worked out some kinks. But you know, at the beginning of every change, you like to dream. For us it is the change of the season. Autumn has already decided to leave room for winter and we all are planning how to make the most of it.

the ones that our Sisa loves, or to look for a pillow line to indulge the freestyler who is in Marco. After the wood and a crossing of a stream, begins the second climb towards Col Bourget, 2404m. We climb up open slopes, the sky is slightly veiled, the mood is high, the legs are strong, fresh from the beginning of the season, the company is excellent.

Sisa will fly to Japan, Nick wants to go to the Lofoten, Ale hopes that his free days from a work that forces him in Turin will coincide with heavy snowfalls. Jonny, from Liguria, skis 5 days a year and says that his start of the season with fresh snow above his knees has already been better than any possible expectation. Marco and I would like to mix Japan Lofoten, Etna, Corum Olimpique tour of the Meje and you name it!

I like to think about how we found each other, some actually met before, others just yesterday. I like coincidences and opportunities and also know how to seize them. Nick wanted to freeride with Marco, Jonny was with Nick. Ale was hosting Nick and Jonny. Sisa is a friend of Marco and Ale and shares some memories of skiing clubs with Nick. I got a job canceled at the perfect moment.

It's nice to daydream.

I reach Marco, go skiing with Sisa, finally get to know Nick personally. Strangers until yesterday but friends immediately. The power of sharing. Especially those experiences that leave a mark on you. They don't have to be extreme, they don't have to be 2000 km away from home. As long as they are true.

But let's really open our eyes. There’s 6 of us. The lifts are closed, it has snowed for almost a week in a row and there is no living soul around. We have the Milky Way for us and right now there are no Japan or Lofoten holding us back. We decide to go for what is called “la Traversata”: crossing Sestriere and Sauze D’Oulx. Half of us are locals, local fauna of the upper Susa Valley. Half are "foreigners". However, no one has ever done this tour before and the idea of venturing into something new and different, outside your front door, gives us goosebumps.

Once we get to Col Bourget we have two options. There is a little wind. So either we go down immediately, but make a shorter descent, or continue another half hour on the ridge towards Punta Triplex, 2507m, enjoying a longer descent. Needless to say what we have chosen unanimously. On our way along the ridge the clouds go away and a breathtaking sunset begins to rise. The Fraiteve backlit in front of us, the Rognosa on our left and a myriad of mountains surround us. There’s also Monviso over there. Only mountains, the sunset and us. We take the usual photo at the end of the second climb, then we face some turns under Punta Triplex and off towards the Barrakan wood. The last rays of the sunset illuminate the undergrowth. A fairytale atmosphere, and even the snow is fabulous. Another 1000 meters of descent.

We start from Sestriere, the first destination is the Pitre de l'Aigle 2529m. 530m difference in altitude to warm the legs before the descent towards Pragelato. The snowfalls of the previous days have made the landscape around us more fascinating. The larches are still reddish and with the white color of the snow there’s a fascinating contrast of shades. Almost two meters of snow have fallen in a short time, it is powdery, inviting as much as potentially unstable. The chosen adventure is perfect for the current conditions since the steepest slopes are in the woods. And to be clear, it is not a fallback. Who has never skied in this undergrowth does not know what he’s missing out. Larches have tall branches and a clean trunk.

Marco is from Sauze. Ale and Sisa from Cesana. You can say that these are their home places. Seeing the enthusiasm in their eyes, hearing them commenting and appreciating this experience generates as much satisfaction as the one that gave us the ride we did. The key lies in stimulating curiosity to want to discover something new, precisely in those places that we have

growing up. Every time I was about to do something, a smiley face comparable to a today's emoji would pop up in my head telling me: there is no need to be extreme, just be consistent.

It is important looking far away but also realizing what is nearby. The key lies in trying to live on experiences and not on things, to be shared with those who are hungry for the same ingredients. The legs are tired, the eyes and the heart are happy. Sisa writes me that same evening before falling asleep.

Growing up I realized that what I need are all those little things that remind me how lucky I am before I close my eyes. But not lucky with the usual rhetoric, lucky in the sense of being grateful to have been born in the part of the world where the genuineness of a mountain ride makes you drop a tear.

Turn of mind A turn of mind is the key to draw a new line. BY LUCA ALBRISI PHOTO AARON SCHWARTZ

he beauty of turning lies in the fact that you will never take a perfect one.

There are several ways to stimulate this process. Traveling, dedicating yourself to creativity, but also confronting with an open mind those who have beliefs different from yours. But external stimuli are not enough, we must first of all prepare ourselves to embrace the turn of mind.

You can approach it, of course, but you will never reach the awareness of absolute perfection. Still, the more you keep turning - the more you keep looking for special places to take turns - the more you realize that your technical and spiritual evolution lies precisely in that search. That your ecstasy coincides with that approaching the moment of perfection in which your whole body and your whole mind become a turn.

When Nicholas Wolken talked me about the Turn of Mind video project inviting me to participate, I immediately understood that it would have been a great opportunity to have an experience of "contamination" that ranged from riding to sharing ideas and theories able to generate new perspectives.

For a few moments you can override your identity as a subject and cross individual barriers, merging into something that is simultaneously you, and outside of you.

Besides, the prerequisites were all there: three splitboarders active on environmental issues but with completely different stories behind them - Nicholas is a psychologist, I am a philosopher and James is an environmental scientist - our splits, a pair of sledges loaded with food and a hut in the middle of the nothing surrounded only by magnificent mountains.

A real turn of mind presupposes this becoming something else and being able, even if only for a few moments, to have a point of view completely estranged from what is usually the perception of yourself.

paths often led to similar conclusions. As if to show that the differences in styles can only enhance the very particular human nature.

The idea was to reach our refuge and stay there a few days to talk about environmental theories, world views, possible concrete actions and, of course, snowboarding, lines and style. After all, I believe that the current environmental crisis must be dealt a bit like we did with our journey. Indeed, the approach solution will have to be faced by "action" people with different skills and training. I don't think that chasing only the scientific path or the humanistic one would lead to real results. If we want to build a future capable of abandoning the current path to draw better lines, we will have to merge our different skills and our different approaches in order to allow ourselves to trigger that gigantic and profound turn of mind, regarding ourselves and our relationship with the world, without which we will have no future. The curious thing about this trip was realizing how our apparently so different

After all, some prefer a split, others a solid snowboard, some wide skis while others still love carbon toothpicks. But everyone, after all, are people who have in their nature a deep passion for sliding down mountains. What changes is only the perspective with which we see these differences. Looking closely they are more evident but from a more global point of view, we are all part of a single reality. In a very similar way we must realize as women and men - that we belong to a much more extensive system than our "simple" human being and we have to try to remove ourselves from that position of centrality that we have given ourselves. I believe this is the central turn of mind of our existence and our real challenge for the future. I have always had a very philosophical approach to outdoor and, starting

ply on foot, we need to follow and draw our trace to get to that profound turn of mind that allows us to re-think ourselves as part of that environment in which we love to slide and draw our lines in harmony with the whole nature. from the theses of Arne Naess and Deep Ecology, I have always been convinced that this could be an instrument capable of bringing us closer to a biocentric vision of the world, according to which any living being has full right to its own realization. This trip, however, added other points of view to my vision by showing me how other completely different paths from mine - such as the psychological one that Nicholas is tracing - lead to very similar conclusions on how we get closer to natural reality (and our recognition as part of it) not only can it help us but it is necessary for our survival by representing the only way to pursue our sustainable existence on this planet. It is the intersection of all these traces that leads us to consider the experience in nature as central, precisely because it represents a key to achieving that rapprochement. Whether it's on a split, on skis or sim-

But if we truly recognize the profound value of these experiences, we must be ready to take a few more steps. We must be prepared to fight in defense of these spaces. And not because they are fundamental for the practice of our activities but for the importance they have in themselves. Not because they have an economic value, but rather because through them we can reach that Turn of Mind that allows us to recognize ourselves. Because after all - with a turn of mind - these places are nothing but part of ourselves and we, we are nothing more than these same places.

"Whether it's on a split, on skis or simply on foot, we need to follow and draw our trace to get to that profound turn of mind that allows us to re-think ourselves as part of that environment in which we love to slide and draw our lines in harmony with the whole nature."

Carie ITW DENIS PICCOLO PHOTO FEDERICO RAVASSARD WITH MARZIO NARDI, ACHILLE MAURI E FEDERICO RAVASSARD

Carie (“cavity”) is a hole made by a woodworm that responds to the name of “climbing” Carie is what remains of the degeneration process of a tissue, in this case of a place.

96

CARIE (“CAVITY”) IS A HOLE MADE BY A WOODWORM THAT R E S P O N DS TO TH E NAM E O F “ C LI M B I N G” CAR I E I S W HAT R E MAI N S O F TH E D EG E N E RATI O N PRO C E SS OF A TISSUE, IN THIS CASE OF A PLACE.

These two concepts summarize this project, which has its roots in the immense reservoir of inspiration which is climbing. Its purpose is to observe an apparently distant place, in contrast with the natural beauty and find its own "beauty" through climbing. We have used this discipline as a way of interpreting these spaces. Carie is not an investigation, nor a complaint or a position but a look at that world by a group of climbers attracted by the aesthetics that these places have, by their history and their contradictions.

When was Carie born? M : It is a project born many years ago from my obsession to give life to these spaces where emptiness and often abandonment reign. Slices of landscape that man has exploited and then abandoned which for me retain a strong attractive power. For these places, which are nothing more than wounds in the mountains, climbing can be the cure. The magnet that attracts creativity. We interpreted the lines without digging holds but climbing on the existing ones that man had dug for other reasons. This was the way we got involved. Adapting to that space without altering it but using the means that climbing gives us: ropes, carabiners, pitons and friends. I would like to remind that this was a project that I would have liked to accomplish with Adriano Trombetta, with whom I had imagined it. Unfortunately “The Mountain" took him away. Who are the people behind Carie? MARZIO NARDI.

I’ve been a climber for 35 years, I was one of the first Italian sport climbing

champion, but very soon I left competitions to pursue creativity through climbing: to look for places to nail, to trace competitions, to sculpt holds, to film. Telling climbing and how it manifests itself in its most varied forms. In 1997, with the Bside I created one of the first climbing gym in Italy. ACHILLE MAURI

I was born in Lecco not so many years ago. I have been going to the mountains since I was little thanks to a solid family tradition, and through my work as a videomaker/photographer I try to analyze the relationship between man and the environment in all its forms. Carie was for me a union between ethics, aesthetics and “athletics". FEDERICO RAVASSARD

25 years old from Turin. I told my grandparents that I am a photographer, but in fact photography is only one of the means by which I try to tell something. Nowadays I’m mostly working in the world of outdoor sports, although I have not yet understood what I would like to do when I grow up.

98

99

You’re 3 climbers, what kind of climbing do you like the most and what don’t? M : What I like most is its lack of boundaries. The possibility of shuffling the cards and doing something new or at least different every time. The possibility of carrying this gesture everywhere giving new meaning to things. I can't stand the risk of stereotyping things, a risk that climbing is also undergoing, and then I could't stand tight shoes anymore. A:

I have no particular predisposition towards a specific climbing style. I love the environment in which it is practiced and I feel lucky having the opportunity to change it from time to time. Certainly quarries have opened a fourth dimension in me, for better or for worse. F:

I personally like to vary as much as possible: sport crag, trad, great climbing routes and gym when I'm in town. I have no particular preferences, sometimes what makes the difference for me is the time of year. One aspect of climbing that does not drive me crazy is, unfortunately, the "cultural" impoverishment in the last years of indoor climbing, a world that has started to be frequented by people who have more to do with crossfit and do not seem particularly interested in the rock. What did you face while filming this project? A : First of all, there have been two kinds of filmic approaches to this work: a purely "sporty" one, focused on the athletic gesture of climbers and their harmonious interpretation of the lines. The choice of the shot was extremely determined by the aesthetic beauty and how it appeared through the lens. At that point a sort of silent complicity was set off between us and the climbers, interrupted only by: “Is it good or shall we

do it again? Let's do it again... ". Our time spent on the wall was equivalent to theirs, excluding those times that "Tuono Blu" (the nickname of Roberto Gianocca, the “drone pilot") flew through the Tuscan skies. The second approach, however, was much more in a documentary style. The people we involved and therefore listened to were chosen only by us, through a natural selection. We have been curious since the beginning, in my opinion not too omniscient, but this is up to the public to decide. How strongly can a sport like climbing denounce strong environmental issues? F : Compared to other disciplines, climbing has the double advantage of being intrinsically linked to the territory and of being easily understandable to an audience of non-experts if told in the right way that certainly is not the one of sports performance, and this was demonstrated by the cross-cutting success of Free Solo. Carie's idea is to use climbing as a honey trap, attracting the public through action scenes and then dealing with more serious topics, for example quarrying. The outdoor audience is basically very attentive to environmental issues, you just have to find a way to capture its attention and this sport lends itself very well, like a sort of infotainment. How much and in what way can sports, especially outdoor ones, influence and help the planet? And how much does it make it possible to sensitize people who have not yet dealt with the topic? F : Historically, sport has already shown that it can influence politics and society, just think about Tommie Smith and John Carlos’ actions at the '68 Mexico Olym-

100

pics or, more recently, about Putin's influences in the Russian Olympic system or the story of Colin Kaepernick. It is a global language, which lends itself well to diffusion through a transversal audience. In the case of outdoor sports, then, the message is strengthened thanks to the spectacularization of the environment in which the practice takes place. For some time now it seems that all brands are concerned about environmental issues, reality or marketing? F : Certainly for some brands green issues are a trend oriented to obtain benefits in terms of revenue, just as a certain attention to the female audience had been a couple of years ago. At the same time, however, there has been recently a collective awareness that make sure that brands, in order to be appreciated, must absolutely meet certain requirements of environmental sustainability. The same goes for consumers, who are now targeting their purchases in a more specific way, so that’s good. Of course, then this philosophy should also be applied outside the outdoor world, which in itself is truly small.

It is a project born many years ago from my obsession to give life to these spaces where emptiness and often abandonment reign.

ØKm Beauty BY SIMONE MONDINO & ROMINA MANASSERO I D U E VAG A M O N D I VA LVA R A I TA - C U N E O - I TA LY

We often forget how lucky we are for being Italians and the beauty we are surrounded by every day. In recent years, however, the awareness of how many possibilities and how much beauty there is here in the Cuneo area is growing.

T

oo many times, even too often, we decide to leave for a travel and rarely it is towards a destination or an experience nearby. This desire to go further and further away, as if we were running away from our daily life or who knows for what other reason, leads us to neglect our home land, our mountains, our valleys. We snobbish them, but certainly not with malice, it is only an automatism present in each one of us. We often forget how lucky we are for being Italians and the beauty we are surrounded by every day. In recent years, however, the awareness of how many possibilities and how much beauty there is here in the Cuneo area is growing. A couple of phone calls, some chats and we have everything ready: let’s go for a week in Val Varaita, with the Val Varaita Trekking, in search of peace but above all of the beauty of a valley even during the winter season. Kilometer after kilometer we rise in altitude, getting closer and closer to the snow. Year after year, November looks more like winter than December and that happens also during these days close to Christmas. Our continuous search for positivity makes us think that the snow will come to find us. Between ravioles, craft beers and laughters, the days pass by fast, discovering new landscapes and escaping from rain showers and fog while chasing timid glances of sun. A damned flow of libeccio in fact conditions the atmosphere of the valley but fortunately the abundant snowfall in November allows us to explore new trails such as those of the Gilba valley, the Meira Paula side but also the more traditional ones in the Alevè wood, in Chianale and Bellino. A discovery of the valley in the company of some refuge managers, an "excuse" to socialize, know and understand how the mountain is changing, a way to get in touch with those people who really "live"

the mountain and do not use it only as fashion trend. So we find ourselves helping some people to bring supplies on the peak waiting for tourists coming for the holidays, to arrange Christmas decorations in the woods, to prepare typical dishes or simply to toast at the end of the day all together. A living mountain, true and pure just as we like it. A truly full-immersion week in the life of the valley, an authentic rediscovery of local beauties too often forgotten but that deserve respect and greater appreciation. From the first light of dawn to the night it is a continuous wandering through old villages and enchanted woods and while everything runs around us, its majesty, the snow, arrives to make us stop, to make us understand that we can live the mountain even more slowly, in silence, appreciating all its aspects. The wood crackling in the fireplaces, the smiles of those who live in those places that often seem abandoned but that are more alive than ever, and, outside the window, the flakes slowly accumulating, transforming the landscape around us. Some people may think that the snow can divide but in reality, if you know how to face it and live it, it literally unites everything and everyone. Going out, wearing snowshoes and leaving for any destination, wrapped in absolute silence feeling alive, true and present and, even if for a moment, part of a community. “There’s no hurry, let's enjoy this coffee, these flakes on the face, these smiles" a lifestyle that is increasingly forgotten by going to look for it in distant destinations when, instead, it is right here, in front of us, outside our home. It would be nice to understand it more and more because our mountains must return to live as they were used to, they must go back to smile like their inhabitants do, those who still believe in it despite the many sacrifices and above all who resist every day, always. I live not in myself, but I become portion of that around me. (Lord Byron)

k Since we were young the bond with our mountains has always been very strong and in this last year this connection with our peaks has grown even more.

W

e are lucky to live in Italy and especially in the province of Cuneo, in that south west corner of Piedmont where mass tourism is not yet as present as in other areas.

ster. Around us the Argentera, the Corno Stella, the Monte Matto, the Asta, just to mention some of the peaks that have written wonderful pages of mountaineering thanks to exciting challenges surrounded by undisputed beauty. Right here, in this corner of Piedmont, there is the Guiglia Bivouac that pops out of the carpet of clouds with its red color almost to recall an equally enchanted sunrise.

Here, very close to France, the valleys sometimes look like as they would never end with their thousand wild facets, the trails that wind up along more or less exposed slopes and where it is possible at times to see the sea of the French Riviera. Authentic magic of the Maritime Alps Natural Park, where you can experience outdoor practices following the rhythm of the seasons.

That night we were in three because at dusk a young boy from the scouts of Savona joined us after his solo journey crossing the mountains for several days. It seems like we have known each other for a long time, we created an immediately family atmosphere and as always time passed by quickly while the fire slowly went out leaving space for an incredible blanket of stars above us and clouds at our feet.

We like to experience the mountains “in our own way, slowly and respectfully, surrounded by silence and solitude. Walking for hours and hours, going up the slopes until we reach our goal, stopping, observing and leaving without any hurry, without stress but always in search of beauty and good time.

Not only hiking and shooting but also a more sensitive eye towards mother nature, so dear to us that it led us, right near the bivouac, to collect part of the incivility of the human being who forgets his waste upstream too many times. It will perhaps be a matter of a lack of education or something done without even thinking about it but which unfortunately compromises the authentic beauty of the mountain and ruins its essence.

Here comes the idea of returning to frequent bivouacs more, to shoot them and to tell them to the public. The wood that crackles during a full moon night, the low clouds, the chamois that, intrigued, approach us like old friends. An intimate and pure atmosphere that brings us back the mountaineering of the past and makes our hearts beat fa-

It is funny to meet along the trails some gentlemen who are almost unbelieving in seeing us carrying a bag of rubbish of all kinds to the valley but it is stronger than us, we cannot fly over such badness and we feel more and more guilty towards nature and the mountain.

dly more mountainous scenario made of stones, mosses and snowfields while the famous Canal of Lourousa and the north face of the Corno Stella dominate behind us. Night is falling and it is difficult to recognize the sounds of the mountain, but in this absolute solitude we feel at home and in complete safety. In the distance some stones roll downstream, perhaps our friends chamois from the previous sunset.

Every time going up, kilometer after kilometer, you quickly forget the frenzy of the city, the weight of the backpack on your shoulders becomes almost irrelevant because the mind is lighter and lighter and the feeling of freedom that you feel on those trails is difficult to express in words.

Outside, the wood collected along the stony ground crackles happily as we observe falling stars, new constellations and we fully recharge ourselves seeing such beauty. Sometimes we feel almost like the protagonists of a movie, the two of us in a beautiful bivouac at 2235 meters above sea level where every gesture becomes special and unforgettable.

A few hours of walking are enough to feel isolated from the world, disconnected and ready to learn to reconnect with your deepest self. Rediscovering the essentials: a book, a candle, a good pasta with beans that boil on the lit stove while the day slowly comes to an end and the last timid rays of sun illuminate the highest peaks with shades that warm the heart.

Outside, the wood collected along the stony ground crackles happily as we observe falling stars, new constellations and we fully recharge ourselves seeing such beauty.

From up here, from the Barracco Varrone, you can see some guys setting up a tent near Lagarot right on the border of the larch and beech vegetation that characterizes the first part of the route. This time we will be alone, in a decide-

Every time the emotions change just like the landscapes we cross, like the shapes of the bivouacs, the colors of the sky and our moods. We try to fully enjoy every moment and at the same time to make it perfect before leaving and returning to the hectic world down there. And it doesn't matter if we have to walk more than five hours because we already know that when we get up there, at the Moncalieri Bivouac, we will be surrounded by the most beautiful mountains of Piedmont: the Argentera, the Monviso in the distance and the Gèlas, one of the two most southern parts of the entire Alpine arc, second only to the nearby Clapier. Climbing between continuous zigzags immersed in the alders you arrive, after hours of walking, to the White Lake of the Gèlas where you can see the first snow. Only the most expert eyes can glimpse the bivouac from here because it is completely camouflaged, also thanks to its sheet metal coating. The heat during the entire climb was terrifying, the thermometer of the car at the parking lot indicated almost thirty Celsius degrees at one thousand two hundred meters of altitude, insane.

ley. The thunderstorms slowly stop almost to suffocate the plain and the sun disappears behind the Regina delle Marittime decreeing the end of a new day. Going down we meet a young French adventurer who will keep us company throughout the evening telling us about his three-day hike between passes and peaks decided from time to time along the way without any time limit. This is also the mountain. Just a few hours of sleep because the desire to see the dawn is unstoppable, we go up again towards the glaciers pass, the stove burns and the coffee maker mumbles flooding us with Arabic aromas while the sun rises in front of us illuminating the valley and giving us back those known forms that until a few moments before were hiding with the night. It is incredible and at times indescribable what we feel. We would love to immortalize every moment but not only with the camera but with our heart and eyes.

Bivouacs unite, make you know people, make them grow. They are like books: they create memories, tell stories and can truly bring out the best part of us by teaching us to improve ourselves every day more and more.

The sky grumbles in the distance towards the plain when we decide to go up a little further to enjoy the sunset directly from the Passo dei Ghiacciai. This is pure emotion because we have dreamed of reaching this place for so many years. A light breeze blows through the Tibetan flags while our gaze is enchanted in admiring the Argentera on the left, on the right below us there’s the bivouac and the lakes encountered climbing and under our feet the Gèlas glacier that descends towards the val-

Wadi Rum BY MAT TEO PAVANA

118

119

In Arabic it literally means "Valley of the Moon", even if from the window of the airplane you have more the feeling of participating in the first landing of humanity. You can perceive it from the lack of a swollen and blue river and from the very strong presence of the earth of the chromatic spectrum of the lava, with shades from red to brown to ash black.

And yet, once I walk on that ground, I marvel at the whiteness of the white sand which is so fine as not to be perceived by the touch. The uniqueness of Wadi Rum lies precisely in its wild nature, in the complexity of the mechanisms of the Bedouin life and in the desolation on the tops of the sandstone towers. Unfortunately, like any aesthetically sublime place, there is no lack of macabre western influence that over the years has translated into a technological village to simulate life on another plant or on a "zero stress" tour with the ass resting on a jeep. Fortunately I managed to escape from all this. Although I almost tasted the true spirit of Wadi Rum, all together with a geographically diverse and highly motivated team.

"The uniqueness of Wadi Rum lies precisely in its wild nature, in the complexity of the mechanisms of the Bedouin life and in the desolation on the tops of the sandstone towers. Unfortunately, like any aesthetically sublime place, there is no lack of macabre western influence that over the years has translated into a technological village to simulate life on another plant or on a "zero stress" tour with the ass resting on a jeep."

Together with me there were Matteo Faletti, Matteo Piccardi, Claudio Migliorini, Alessandro Beber, Lisa Angelini, Mirco Grasso and Dimitri Anghileri. People from different places that are usually the fundamental prerequisite for an interesting journey, they are that extra laugh at the end of the day because of an unknown and incomprehensible saying. Wadi Rum is a poor country, consisting of 2000 inhabitants but continuously growing due to the high birth rate. Children walk barefoot and the dirt on the streets is primarily a cultural rather than an environmental problem, but obviously nobody seems to care much about it since the priorities are different. Each family has a jeep to transport tourists into the desert at an enviable speed to the first classified in the Paris Dakar. The Bedouins who live outside the village have dromedaries to move around with or, more simply, to earn a few more dinars as an attraction always for us stupid western tourists. What never fails is the smile that the inhabitants reserve for a rusty "as-salamu alaykum". A few millennia ago this valley was crossed by a river that would have left only large rocks, in this case climbing walls, our playground. Already in the early 1980s climbers from all over the world explored part of this huge desert that stretches between the borders of the state of Israel and Saudi Arabia. The territory is vast and finding your way in the canyons dug by the water and the wind is complicated without a local guide. Atayek was the one who not only hosted us in his home, but who drove us between one wall

120

and another, proud to show us the horsepower of his new car. Atayek was born and raised in Wadi Rum. Nowadays his job is hosting climbers. Atayek is the man to contact in case you would like to go climbing in Jordan without losing the quality of the experience. Fixed menu based on what the earth offers (and which in any case reserves pleasant surprises), a dusty mattress on which to rest with a sleeping bag and little else to get used to the idea that to feel good, very little is needed. I discovered a rhythm of life that almost made me uncomfortable because of its slowness. Yet in that way of life, I rediscovered a part of myself that I thought no longer existed: the peace of slow time. I have an unpleasantly nice feeling when reality is slammed in my face. I consider it a privilege not to have seen any photos of a place, not to have even heard of it. Sometimes I do it on purpose: I don't look for information in order to better enjoy the experience; impossible sometimes for those who, like me, are victims and accomplices of social media. Looking at an image on Instagram automatically triggers the prejudice of the place and the annihilation of the discovery. If curiosity has always been a genetic nature of the human being, for me it seems to have turned into an exercise, an art to be refined in order not to live in a superfluous way. God if it's difficult. Curiosity lies in knowing as little as possible, in reserving in giving to yourself ignorance. The main allies of curiosity are sensitivity and empathy, which make up the fourth and fifth dimensions of inner wealth, which then technically should make you grow.

121

122

The short trip to Wadi Rum was therefore the search for my lost time and not just a journey of friendship and discovery. I realize, now more than ever, that although I do everything to abstract myself as much as possible from the mechanisms of stressful western life, I am incapable of it and I often find myself complaining about my chaotic life, without balance, in suspension. The solution is light years away, it seems like I could never reach it. The simple immersion in a world and in a different time, however, has helped me to improve. It's just a matter of awareness. Climbing, like no other sport that I have ever been lucky enough to exercise, is the emblem of concentration on the present moment, which is unique and unrepeatable. Climbing helped me and still does to isolate myself from the superfluous, from the useless, even though Lionel Therray defined it as the "the conquest of the useless". The introspective feature of climbing combined with the search for an isolated environment was for me a breath of fresh air, a way to put things back into place, a heartfelt recommendation to climbers and everybody else.

“There are none happy in the world but beings who enjoy freely a vast horizon” – Damodara

We all live under the same sky, but we have different existences and points of view. We are similar because we all belong to this land, we are different because everyone walks or chooses his path, his purpose, his thought. There are those who will leave traces of intellect and reasonableness, those of superficiality. Those who will aim to illuminate the road and those who will trample it. Those who see and don’t understand, those who observe with the heart and look beyond.

PHOTO SIMONE MONDINO

Crazy, insatiable wanderers looking at the horizon, where all dreams are born, where the charm of the new day is shown. Crossers of the night, constantly on the move towards different destinations, aware that this thirst will never end. That there is no way to travel the whole world, that there is no navigation to distant places, and there is not even any sea, but only the intense and inevitable life that continues to move the final destination further.
