From the 3rd to the 6th of February 2019, more than 2,800 exhibitors will meet in Munich to present their latest innovations in the winter and urban sports, outdoor and fitness sectors. Four days full of ideas, contacts and comparisons. Digital and wearables, influencers and social media, yoga and climbing. These will be the trends and the salient aspects of Ispo MĂźnich 2019, the biggest sports fair in the world. The new Indoor Climbing Hub, in the A3 pavilion, will bring together the various players to discuss the developments of a discipline with growing interest, underlined by a constantly developing market that looks at the opportunities and challenges of the new Olympic format. There will be a big space also for crossfit enthusiasts, urban running, functional training and yoga. Not just workshops, stages and demonstrations, but also important news from the clothing world; a market that only in the yoga sector is increasing more than 6% a year. But the most important trend is the sustainability. In recent years, consumer purchasing decisions have increasingly focused on finding transparent solutions. Origin of the materials, impact on health, environmental and social responsibility of the company are just some of the aspects that the consumer looks for in every product. A trend that in recent years has embraced very different fields, from clothing to accessories, through cosmetics, to interior design, and has involved the sports and outdoor industry in an increasingly important way. Many brands are already aware of their responsibilities and have incorporated a sustainable production process in their business, demonstrating their environmental and social commitment even through the involvement of local employees and communities. A reflection that starts from the production chain: spinners, weavers, dyers, but also farmers and the chemical industry. All elements of a global machine that impacts both on the life of individual communities and on the whole ecosystem. Skins, rubber, fabrics, hemp, organic cotton, recycled paper, organic fibers, linen, silk, wool, jute and bamboo. To talk about the developments and importance of this topic there will be representatives like Jon Cocino of 1% for the Planet, Jeremy Jones of Protect our Winters and Rainer Uhl of Surfrider Foundation. We live in world where the relationship between business and consumer has changed. Scenarios and market trends are increasingly emphasizing the need to develop products with a high social and environmental content. Consumer confidence must be conquered, not deceived.

POLER FILED FOR BANKRUPTCY Last 30th November Poler Stuff filed for bankruptcy by liquidating all of its assets (patents, brands
and inventory inventories) to repay the $2.3 million in liabilities. The camping equipment and ap-
parel company, founded in 2011 in Portland, had built its brand with a relaxed approach to outdoor life, becoming very popular with young people. Benji Wagner, co-founder and creative director,
did not want to comment on the details of what led to bankruptcy, but according to SGB Media, the docket shows a decline in revenue from 7.2 million in 2017 to 3.4 in 2018.

BEER BOX
The new hybrid solution created by Salewa for the alpine climbing. To protect from the cold during breaks and to avoid overheating in the most intense phases, the designers have mapped the different areas by eliminating the excess padding. Chest, back and shoulders are protected by a 90/10 down jacket with micro perforations in the welds that allow a replacement of moist air. The areas less subject to the cold, where freedom of movement is important, use an abrasion resistant Durastretch fabric.
The only lantern you'll ever need. Up to 400 lumens of directional and adjustable LED light. It can be recharged from any USB port or from a Goal Zero Nomad solar panel, and it is equipped with an emergency crank for instant charging. The 4.400 mAh lithium battery, with 1.5 A USB output, is enough to power smartphones and tablets. The folding legs provide a support for maximum light dispersion.
Just one product, many functions. Höfats Beer Box was born with the idea of giving new life to objects. This is how a simple bottle holder, made of solid Corten steel, can become a brazier and, thanks to the accessories, also a grill or a stool. The large handle grips facilitate mobility, while the internal cardboard partition can also act as a fire. It obviously includes a shaping bottle opener. We wish you wonderful evenings with friends in front of the fire.

HOVR PHANTOM
Somewear Labs presented a small device that turns your smartphone into a satellite phone. By taking advantage of the Iridium system, it offers reliable global coverage to explore safely. It works via Bluetooth connection providing SMS and 2-way email availability. In addition to textual communication, its convenient application provides location and weather forecast. Rechargeable via USB, it also works as an autonomous emergency transmitter via an SOS button.
In his garden, surrounded by a brazier and a barbecue, the designer Dick van Hoff realized something was not working. Combining the practical side with pleasure, he created Outdooroven, a multi-functional Corten steel outdoor heater: heat source, barbecue grill, oven and smoker all in one item. Just like the grandparents' stoves, it uses the heat of the fire to prepare food and also it reinforces the social aspect.
A totally new running experience. A comfort guaranteed by the anatomical design of the interior, the extreme softness of the knitted collar and the layers of soft material that envelop the foot. UA HOVR technology provides a feeling of absence of gravity that promotes the return of energy and reduces the force of impact step by step. The Energy Web compression network contains and molds the foam, giving back all the energy of your steps.

˜ WORN WEAR TOUR BY PATAG O N I A I S BAC K
Why waste it if you can use it again? On January 24th, the Worn Wear Tour by Patagonia kicked off from Innsbruck and it will stop at the most important snow-covered destinations in Europe to repair your snow technical gears. Born in 2013, the Worn Wear campaign was created to encourage and educate people to take care of their clothes, adjusting them if necessary, and making sure they last as long as possible. Repairing your own garments, instead of buying new ones every season, is one of the most important gestures we can do to protect our planet, reducing CO2 emissions, waste and water consumption. Bring your most loved (and worn out) item and Patagonia will repair it for free, whatever the brand is.
#STOPMICROFIBRE: EVERY WASHING IS A TORTURE FOR THE SEA
After obtaining the banning of microplastics in cosmetics, Marevivo launches #StopMicrofibre, a campaign about the release of microplastics from synthetic fabrics. A single load of 5 kg of polyester material in the washing machine produces between 6 and 17.7 million microfibres that are not blocked by the filtering systems and then pour into the sea. For example, a city like Berlin releases an amount equivalent to 540,000 plastic bags every day. Microfibers are more and more found in filtering organisms, but also in the stomachs of marine fish and birds, in sediments, in cooking salt and bottled water. Microframions that begin to absorb pollutants and toxic substances and are ingested by the organisms, accumulating until they potentially reach men.

The 2019 of La Sportiva opens up with the aim of eco-sustainability with solutions, materials and certifications designed to minimize environmental impact. At the ISPO fair in Munich La Sportiva will formalize the entry into the non-profit organization 1% For the Planet, in which members contribute by allocating at least 1% of their annual turnover to projects and environmental causes. The company's commitment continues in new products both in the apparel and in hardgoods, the heart of the FW 19/20 winter collection. The new Ski-Tour clothing line sees the launch of garments entirely or partially made of fabrics and padding obtained from the reuse of recycled polyester certified by RePET, deriving from the recycling of plastic bottles at the end of their life cycle.

Through the series House for Trees, Vo Trong Nghia Architects studio is experimenting typological variations on the theme of the inclusion of nature in inhabited spaces, adapting the founding concept of hybridization between home and forest to different contexts, proving to be among the most interesting interpreters of contemporary sustainable architecture. The House for Trees introduces a rather radical concept, especially in a country like Vietnam, where the scarcity of green spaces is causing huge environmental problems such as flooding, overheating, and air pollution. The latest addition is the Stepping Park House, a hybrid between a home and a tropical forest in a new residential area of Ho Chi Minh City.
PLANET’S 10 YEARS CHALLENGE
The 10 years challenge exploded on all social media. There are countless posts by famous people or simple users engaged in the challenge of posting their portraits ten years before and after. The hashtag #10yearschallenge has spread so much that it has become a meme that has shifted our attention to the health of our planet. So in addition to the images of the vips, there were emblematic images of yesterday and today’s Antarctica, of the Amazon swept away by deforestation, of the advancing of the Sahara desert. WWF and Greenpeace were in pole position for the dissemination of images showing the effects of climate change. But many, known and unknown, have accepted the challenge and are passionate about the cause: “This is the only 10yearschallenge you should worry about”.

Following the announcement of its sustainability goals for the next five years, Mammut takes another step in its approach to responsible production: it joined the Sustainable Apparel Coalition (SAC). The Swiss brand will now begin the progressive implementation of the Higg Index, a series of standardized tools for measuring environmental impacts and working conditions, including the supply chain. The ability to measure the sustainability performance of suppliers, brands and products increases the focus on results and provides solid basis for a process of continuous improvement in the textile industry, as well as responding to the demands of ecological and social transparency from the consumers.
PICTURE FOR GOOD
In December 2018, Picture Organic Clothing launched the first edition of Picture For Good, a real call to action to present their projects of responsibility with the intent of redistributing the resources generated by the brand to support environmental or social causes. The jury, composed of Rubén Salgado, Coline Ballet-Baz, Damien Castera, Mat Schaer and Thibaut Liebenguth, examined more than 120 projects received by announcing the 3 finalists: the Canadian collective Beyond Boarding, the Basque office of Surfrider Foundation Europe and Protect Our Winters UK. he world's leading company in the development and production of rubber soles for outdoor activities, free time, work and fashion, once again surprised everyone, presenting Vibram Wrap & Go Sole at the Pitti Uomo in Florence. A revolutionary concept sole, that combines lightness and grip performance with a new "wraparound" construction. A highly revolutionary project that starts from the natural evolution of the idea behind the famous Furoshiki, but that presents unique features thanks to its particular design and to the new rubber technology, which moves from 2D to 3D, limiting waste in the best way possible. The Wrap & Go Sole is characterized by the super grip, thanks to the Vibram Megagrip rubber with whi-
ch it is made, by the lightness and reduced thickness obtained thanks to the use of Vibram Litebase Technology and by a lateral protection and impermeability. Vibram, synonymous with innovation in the footwear world, premiered in Florence a limited edition capsule collection of a 100% Vibram "Powered by Vibram Wrap & Go Sole" shoe, which is more and more interested in urban contexts. The sole becomes the protagonist of the shoe itself, and presents strong stylistic references to the world of sneakers. A combination of sportswear, given by technical fabrics, and the ultra-contemporary urban mood; a sole with a particular design, able to define a bold style and to give personality to the shoe.

Polartec Power Air A new Era _
P
olartec, the American brand leader in the production of cutting-edge and sustainable textile solutions, presented the first technology designed to reduce the dispersion of microfibres. Polartec Power Air: a technology that exploits the efficiency of heating the encapsulated air to create a new form of fabric that is incredibly more sustainable. It is the result of a multi-year research and is presented as the latest product of Polartec Eco-engineering, the process that uses recycled materials, advanced production techniques, highly efficient logistics and rigorous certification tests, which allow to create an unprecedented innovation channel. A fabric that therefore represents a step forward in durability and reduction of the environmental impact thanks to the advanced thermal efficiency that releases 5 times less microfibres in the environment compared to other premium mid-layer fabrics. It is different from traditional fabrics, its unique construction contains fibers inside the air pockets, providing a heating advantage, while reducing the potential dispersion in the washing and over time; on the inner side it has a gridlike structure similar to the bubble wrap, which retains the air, while the outer side shows a smooth, very resistant and anti-friction surface. Power Air has been indeed awarded with the prestigious Future Textile Awards as "best sustainable innovative fabric", thanks to the company's continuous commitment in focusing on reducing environmental impact. It is in fact known that Polartec is more innovative than other companies in the field of sustainability: in 2015 it reached a new record, recycling over 1 billion plastic bottles to turn them into yarns, avoiding disposal in landfills. The realization of this new type of fabric construction is only at the beginning, but there are already several outdoor brands that have decided to include this new technology in their next collections. Power Air, the symbol of a new era!

BETTER SOLUTIONS FOR A BETTER WORLD
"Recycling is a good start, but it's not the end these are the words of Mike Joyce, president and CEO of PrimaLoft. The world leader in research and innovative development of comfort solutions with high performance insulation, fabrics and yarns, is now a point of reference in the outdoor sector - and not only - and it allows consumers to enjoy the experience in any situation. Always a promoter of sustainability, today after 4 years of studies and research, it presents PrimaLoft Bio insulation and Primaloft Bio Performance Fabric, both made with the first synthetic fiber composed of 100% recycled and biodegradable fibers. This is a real turning point in terms of sustainability in the textile sector: PrimaLoft Bio products are in fact made with 100% post-consumer recycled materials and, when they reach the end of their life cycle, they return to nature. The fiber, which is more appealing to naturally occurring mi-
crobes, allows much faster biodegradation under certain environmental conditions, such as in a landfill or in ocean waters. It took two years of research to decipher the biodegradation code, two more to develop the process and more than a year of testing to verify that the performance of the fibers maintained the same high standard of other fibers on the market. Tests have shown that these PrimaLoft Bio fibers, in just over a year, have achieved almost complete biodegradation, much faster than the degradation of the polyester placed in the same conditions. These new fibers, however, do not change the performance, the visual and tactile

aspect of the garment and the products are very resistant during their whole life cycle. PrimaLoft has always been concerned about environmental issues and with this new fiber tries to solve the huge problem of microplastics poured into our oceans. According to research by the Ellen Macarthur Foundation, it is estimated that every year half a million tons of plastic microfibres, produced during the washing of fabrics based on plastic materials such as polyester, nylon or acrylic, end up in the oceans, polluting the marine fauna and in the end also men. These are alarming data that should move everyone's consciences. Up to date a brand like PrimaLoft has transformed 90 million plastic bottles taken from landfills into high quality insulation technologies and by 2020 90% of its insulating products will have at least 50% post-consumer recycled material. It is another big step towards a more sustainable world!

Bioplastic It is estimated that if our consumption model does not change quickly, in 2050 the amount of plastic in the oceans will exceed the number of all fish. In little more than 70 years, since plastic materials have definitively established themselves on the market, about 8.3 million tons of plastic have been introduced, and only 7% of them has been ricycled. * bio-based pp and pef are currently in development and predicted to be avaiable in commercial scale in 2020 Fortunately, the ecological crisis that we are experiencing has given rise to actions of radical rethinking of the productive system embracing a circular economic model in which waste is no longer considered as such, but it becomes a resource for new activities.
In the outdoor sector, bioplastics are gradually entering at various levels. One of the most interesting projects in this sense is the European project H2020 Effective, which aims to create 100% bio-based nylon fibers and to implement ecodesign strategies to best exploit this material at the end of its life.
The world of plastics is naturally one of the protagonists of this change, which is focusing on more aspects of the material life cycle. On one side, the aim is to reduce the dependence on oil by favoring the production of plastics made of bio-based polymers and therefore made from renewable plant sources, and on the other, the goal is to increase the possibility of reusing and/or recycling the polymer, but also to promote the biodegradability of the plastic object wherever possible. We talk use the word bioplastics to describe both bio-based and biodegradable/compostable plastics. It is a very varied sector which, despite being only a small part of the plastics market today, is constantly growing and is gaining attention from all the major players in the supply chain.
The end of life is in fact one of the most critical phases for a fabric because the up-cycling options are limited especially when it is no longer possible to repair or re-use it. So the attention is growing for the so-called chemical recycling that allows to obtain the starting monomer and therefore a quality equal to the virgin material. The challenge will therefore be to create a polymer from renewable sources that can be recycled several times before returning to the bio-cycle and then becoming compost. The biodegradability of many bioplastics can be an added value, but this depends on the management of the product at the end of its life. In fact, biodegradability is not always a solution to the problem of environmental pollution due to the uncontrolled release of plastics. The times of biodegradation can in fact be long and the biodegradation can not be complete, leaving therefore in the environment the residues of the material.
The interesting environmental aspects of bioplastics are many especially when it is possible to obtain polymers of performance from “waste (eg agricultural, food, forestry, etc.) or when these can be recycled through processes able to maintain a good quality of the polymer itself.
The coming years will therefore see the multiplication of initiatives and projects aimed at replacing traditional polymers with bioplastics and it will be interesting to monitor the actual degree of circularity of these initiatives.
However, as often happens, a simple technological change is not enough and therefore the replacement of traditional plastic with a bioplastic, to start a virtuous process, but we need a deeper rethinking that can enhance and stimulate a bioeconomy (economy based on renewable sources) in which the products are drawn within a flow of matter and energy that is both regenerative and systemic.
ISPO 2019 will be a good opportunity to capture the many tangible signs of the emergence of the revolution that involves this new generation of plastic materials. 31

The Alpine wool perform Wool is a natural textile fiber and we have written and archaeological evidence about its use already in the prehistoric age. It is therefore one of the most versatile and renewable natural resources.
A
fiber warm to the touch that isolates from the cold but also from the heat itself, it is known that some African populations use it during the day to protect themselves from the heat and in the evening to protect themselves from the cold. Even at very high altitudes, various mountain communities all over the world have always used wool to protect themselves from the cold and from climatic adversities. As in the rest of the world, even in Alto Adige on the Dolomites, Salewa’s home, wool is traditionally preferred to create garments that protect from cold and wind, thanks to its thermoregulation and moisture absorption properties; in fact, wool in its hollow fibers can hold up to 30% of its weight in moisture, without giving the sensation of being wet.
minerals, to support the most demanding climbers in the worst weather conditions. The wool is shorn from Tyrolean alpine sheep that spend the summer months in the high-altitude pastures of the Ötztal, between 1900 and 3000 meters high, surrounded by a wonderful landscape. Sheep breeding is a strongly consolidated tradition in Tyrol and with the foundation of this project and the local wool supply, Salewa demonstrates its belonging and its desire to support the economy of this alpine region. If the sheep are healthy and happy, the wool will certainly be of excellent quality. The fibers of the fleeces of these sheep are more robust than Merino’s, and the natural environment in which they live allows them to produce a wool of the highest quality. If more space is available the wool will be better; even if the autumn one is always the most beautiful. In its 2019/2020 fall-winter collection Salewa will use the Alpine Wool Perform technology and other solutions from the new Alpine Wool technology platform throughout the collection. Salewa products will benefit from the high breathability properties of natural wool, and the environment will benefit of PFC-free fabrics.
Sustainability is a very important and dear topic in the outdoor world, and Salewa has chosen to act responsibly and sustainably, in harmony with the values of consumers aware of environmental issues. Choosing to act in the present in order to have a better future. But how? Introducing the new Alpine Wool Perform technology, which combines the wool properties of Tyrolean alpine sheep with those of the Celliant thermoreactive

Ferrino HighLab 25th Anniversary “My father and his working partner Edoardo Rabajoli had the idea of the High Lab in 1994. Since its beginning Ferrino has equipped mountaineers and explorers, taking great care of their contribution in the development and testing of the product. The High Lab was and still is today the way to have our products tested in a structured way by final consumers, also taking into account the expectations of the non-professional user of our products. - ANNA FERRINO

T
his is how Anna Ferrino retraces the history of the High Lab project. An idea that was truly innovative even in 1994. Now as then, for over 25 years, Ferrino High Lab provides the test field at the Rifugio Quintino Sella on Monte Rosa, a unique place located at 3,585 meters high between the valleys of Ayas and Gressoney and near the Felik glacier. From 1994 until today, thousands of sportsmen and nature enthusiasts have spent the night in the camp, which offers a spectacular panorama on the surrounding valleys and a breathtaking mountain view thanks to the numerous peaks that reach 4000 meters above sea level. “The project is growing year after year” Anna Ferrino continues, “we always receive valuable feedback and during these years the High Lab has gradually expanded. Its historic and permanent site remains at the Rifugio Quintino Sella on Monte Rosa, open every year for 25 years. Next to this, rolling fields were inaugurated in Tignes, in Aconcagua, on Mont Blanc, in Valle di Susa, at Monviso, in the Pyrenees. In short, we are expanding and we intend to structure the network of the High Lab fields more and more and in a better way. For the fans of our brand it is a unique experience, for the company it is an efficient way to collect feedback in a structured way and to create a unique relationship with our consumers.” It is a unique opportunity, but made even more unmissable thanks to the possibility of directly testing Ferrino High Lab products, the top line of the historical brand in terms of technology and safety. Thanks to the High Lab you will have the possibility to test products at high altitude. A continuous test for about 45 days, which is the average duration of a base camp, that is useful for the company to detect the climatic conditions several times a day and to observe how the products and raw materials react to this stress test. Resistant, multifunctional and specially designed and produced to offer high performances at high altitude, made for professionals but also suitable for those who decide to approach the mountain in complete safety and looking for the highest quality gears. After spending the night in a tent and testing the camp, Ferrino simply ask everyone to give feedbacks through a poll. This allow Ferrino to collect data on the various tested products directly by the final consumer. All the info collected are subsequently sent to the Ferrino R&D department in order to improve the performance and quality of their gears on the market. The tests carried out in these base camps are very important for Ferrino. In fact, they help to understand how people have lived their experience, with what degree of comfort and what feelings they have felt.
The aim is to continue to improve and be a trusted partner, offering products that are durable, high quality, safe, easy to use and with significant benefits for consumers.
This is a task that the company takes very seriously: “The aim is to continue to improve and be a trusted partner, offering products that are durable, high quality, safe, easy to use and with significant benefits for consumers. All info collected from the test will give important ideas for the launch of new products. Moreover in this way everyone will also have the possibility to test our gears before buying them.”

The mountains are my life.
Nadine Wallner, was born on 15th of may 1989 at Kosterle am Arlberg, in Austria, and grew up as a mountain guide's daughter. From early days on, the mountains became her playground. The Mammut Pro Team Athlete soon tested her own limits in the boundless nature of her homeland while freeriding – then as now her very own expression of personal freedom. We talked with the double time Champion of the Freeride World Tour (2013 & 2014) about her love for this sport, the life of a professional freeride athlete and the risks her job entails.
BY GIULIA BOCCOLA
How does the life of a professional freeride athlete look like? Next to participating in contests all over the world, I try to realize my own projects and mostly also to photograph, film and document them. By doing so, I motivate and inspire people to also enjoy the nature in the same way - I think this a great privilege. What was the most exciting project so far? The most exciting project for me is yet to come – it’s still on my To Do list. It’s about ski mountaineering in Peru. I’ve already had two attempts, but we couldn’t finalize the project. But that's what the magic about high mountains: You often go there several times until you "may" reach your goal. But the feeling afterwards is all the more beautiful! Why did it not work out the first two times? At the first attempt, it was to early after an injury and the total load was to high, so we had to stop. The year after, we were very unlucky with the conditions. In 2018, I didn’t go because of my mountain guide entrance examination, which I absolutely wanted to take.
38
But I clearly won’t give up on this – it’s a life project that matters a lot to me. I’ll definitely try again this year!
Barryvox will actually tell me what to do and will support me in difficult situations by leading more more or less automatically to the target.
Before you became a professional free rider, you trained for a career in alpine skiing. What motivated you to change the field? I think that was a turn of fate. It just wasn't meant to be. I was injured and fought for a long time to come back. Since the injury it has been important for me to be able to ski with a lot of freedom without having to think big, means a lot to me and that’s what I found in freeriding.
Even though there are such risks, you’re loving your job. What is so fascinating about freeriding? Freeriding offers me the possibility to live and enjoy freedom and clear my mind while being in the mountains and letting my imagination and ideas run free in my lines – and expressing myself in this way. . To completely switch off and immerse this world with body and soul. I can do my own thing in my element – it’s a passion! I have great respect for nature and the mountains – and am grateful for every moment in which I can be a part of it.
With your job, you are also facing risks you wouldn’t have to face working in an office, for example the risk of an avalanche. Aren’t you afraid of it? Not afraid. My father always pointed out the risks and told us, that something could happen, which made me have a healthy respect. When I was a child, I learned how to do a search with an analogue avalanche transceiver. It was much more complicated then it is today. Nowadays, my
Do you already have plans for the time after your career? I don’t have concrete plans, but I think I’ll always be in the mountains. I grew up in the mountains and they are my life. All my heart and soul is in the mountains and I will see how I move there in the distant future.

Millet Experience with Eva Walkner
BY S O F I A PA R I S I
Nowadays for a brand it can be very challenging holding on to its roots, while flying high and make the difference in a crowded sky. And it can be more and more challenging to communicate in the best way its important values while following new trends on the market.
That’s why I found impressive the event organized by Millet Mountain Group (Millet, Eider, La Fuma) in November to launch the new collections for the next year and, most of all, to communicate the choices and the voice of the brand: one the first significant part of the event was certainly the location, Chamonix-Mont Blanc, where mountaineering was born, and where Millet has always had an historical link with local mountain guides, the Compagnie des guides de Chamonix.
end of a day full of interesting events for journalists and collaborators. Starting from the early afternoon, we had the opportunity to choose between a series of outdoor or indoor proposals, to learn about the activities of the valley and to test the materials together with guides and athletes. We chose to stretch our legs with a pleasant hike from Montenvers to the famous Signal Forbes, a strategic point to look up to the Mer de Glace (the terminal part of the VallĂŠe Blanche glacier) as well as the imposing peaks of the Drus, and the Grandes Jorasses. After hiking with guides and athletes, we came back to the city for the projection of some videos, including Evolution of Dreams, directed and with Eva Walkner, the freerider and two times Freeride World Tour champion (as well as a Millet athlete), that we interviewed.
In fact, this brand has been collaborating for years in the creation of its products (gear and apparel) not only with the Chamonix guides, but also with those of Grindelwald, and this year, also withthe ones of the Matterhorn. One of Millet's projects was to bring together under its own brand the alpine guides of the three peaks that give the name to the most technical and performing collection in the catalog: the Trilogy collection. In 1987, in fact, Christophe Profit and Eric Escoffier succeeded in the project of ascending the north faces of the three most important and hardest mountains in the Alps: the Jorasses, the Eiger and the Matterhorn, in winter, in less than two days.
During the event at Cgamonix we were told that, Millet, a historical brand in the field of technical equipment for the mountains, in recent years has undergone a process of modernization in terms of communication, and segmentation regarding the collections. The goal, especially regarding softgoods (hardshells, softshells, duvets, layers), has been to provide collections for activities for the whole year: from skiing, skitouring, spring mountaineering and trekking, to trail, to hiking, and to climbing ... adding also a more urban lifestyle line.
The Metterhorn guides officially signed the collaboration agreement with Millet during the Saturday evening event, organized by the brand for its partners and collaborators: a real event with dinner, presentations of the three brands (Millet, Eider and La Fuma), and fashion shows of the new collections, it was just the perfect
As for communication, however, one of the fundamental choices of Millet was its tagline, or motto, "Rise Up" which is proposed as an invitation to physical and vertical asceticism, the one of mountains and rock faces ... but which is also, above all, a spiritual asceticism, a growth or, as Eva Walkner told us ... an evolution.
40
Eva, your movie, "Evolution of Dreams", is not just a freeride movie. It's something more. Certainly "Evolution of Dreams" is a freeride film, but it is above all the story of two girls, two women, Eva and Jackie, who during their lives, like everyone, pass from moments of enthusiasm and success, to moments of failure and difficulty to then recover, grow and regain the strength necessary for always new projects and dreams.
has always been extremely motivating for me. And Jackie immediately loved it, although she was a little scared about it, as me. I am not an alpinist‌ I do not feel like an alpinist. I have a lot to learn about mountaineering, and I think it could be my next playground. But it will take time and experience. As when I went from alpine skiing to freeride, discovering freedom and adrenaline, the attraction for something new and challenging, it excites me a lot.
"Evolution" is the key word used to turn a fall into a springboard. Changing and evolving are very important things to learn: review your goals, redefine them, and then work hard to achieve them. "Dreams": when goals are full of passion, strenght, they become dreams.
What does it mean to be part of the Millet team? It is certainly a pleasure to collaborate with a company that has made the history of mountain equipment, and that is so committed to the development of mountaineering, climbing and mountain activities in general. It is very interesting for me to work with professionals of technicality, feeling also supported in my projects.
In the movie, in addition to the story of your life and the one of Jackie Paaso's, it is told that both of you arrived to freeriding after a period of competitions in alpine skiing and mogul skiing. This is the story of a mountaineering project, I dare say: The idea of skiing the Eiger was certainly something that stimulated my imagination, just because it was beyond my experience as skier. A new level, a peak to reach, a whole mountain to descend ... all this
What are the next projects? I continue to work to make my film (and everything that tells in its depth) know as much as possible, but I would also like to find the time for sport and mountains, which of course I had to neglect a bit to follow the organization of the film , relationships, projections, interviews ...
" ... I will have to train, but above all come back to have more fun, and continue to think about new projects: it's nice to get involved and look for the momentum, in order to live your dreams."

The Cerimonial You do your best to win a plastic necklace. The difference lies in the fact that at the awards of official competitions people check the time, the bus is already turned on to run away as soon as possible, everyone is there waiting for the end. The awards are such a bored. “We want to thank the sponsor, the mayor, the volunteers, the patronage, and blah blah blah". In illegal competitions you can not wait for the winners to be rewarded to have a blast. And everyone is there to cheer them all, every one of them. And everyone is very happy for them.

hat’s what Paco wrote a week after the end of the +Ceremonial+. When it would have taken place and how it would have been was known for some time already. The rules were crystal clear and certainly you would not need a group on WhatsApp to know who would or who would not be there. If you were not informed, it was simply because you were not invited. And if you have not been invited, don’t worry, there was a very specific reason (it had already happened at URMA, do you remember?).
stood. Eureka. Being punk means do not care, or to be more polite fucking do not care, in the most disparate and desperate way possible, whether it is about society, good customs, your neighbor or your neighbor's dog. This does not mean being careless, let me be clear. It means accepting yourself and what you feel towards the world, because of the experiences you’ve had, what you have done and what you will do (if you ever care about, of course). You are you and you do what you feel to do.
Maybe it was because you're too snobby, maybe because you're talking nonsense, maybe because you like the minimal Krupicka style when instead you would need some One One, maybe because you wanted to act cool, or maybe, much more simply, it was because you're fucking lazy and you didn’t want to drive a hundred kilometers by car just to run for only seven km. That’s correct, seven kilometers. The + Ceremonial + is a seven-kilometer run. How could you have known not having been invited? Maybe you were looking for the last end of the season run in a scattered valley of Sardinia to make your wife and her irrepressible desire for the sea happy or maybe you were wasting your time to get infos about a new pair of vomit-colored antishock insoles.
Simple and crystal clear. Live at your best. A punk guy is badly seen: he is a little outcast. Probably a punk goes periodically to a psychotherapist to learn how to get in touch with the society that he hates and from which he does not feel at the least represented. At the +Ceremonial+ there was not an army of crests and studs, but an army that wore shorts and organic cotton shirts. On that day the sun on the plain was shining on the buildings, which in return projected themselves into clear and contrasting shadows on the perfectly smooth asphalt. There were a few scattered pinecones that ruined the feeling of perfect adherence to the ground. It was a really annoying sound. There are people who risked dislocating their ankles for much less.
I found out late about the reason why I was invited to URMA and to the +Ceremonial+. Once Paco told me that the Olympians gods gave me a punk soul. At first I did not understand what he meant. At first I thought he was making fun of me. After the +Ceremonial+ instead I under-
The URMA Army is almost complete. Only Albrisi, Gio, Luchino, Vezz, Filu and Spanish are missing. Maybe someone else whose I can not remember the faces. Lieutenant Mirel
Maybe we ran to be in company or to suffer alone, in silence. Maybe we ran to believe in something or because maybe we do not have anything to believe in. Maybe it was about running to something or someone or maybe just running away from it all. Or maybe, that day, it was simply a matter of running.

... is shouting random numbers, while Vezza gives vegan food around. All stuff chosen by Paco, the diviner of the biological lentil. That bunch of people looks like a herd of racehorses. You can understand it by looking at those swollen calves and the protruding tibialis. Sport vests are ready to rumble between one spit of blood and the other. Everyone come close to the vests rug, a real cemetery of relics from all over the world, from LUT, UTMB or Western State. In fact, everyone must leave a sport vest as a pawn, a gesture that is rewarded by the Coach's 32-toothed smile. A brilliant and respectable dental arch. There are a lot of legends about the Coach and most of them are true. However the Coach is the Coach: he is the general of the cult. Just the time of a quick warm up and we are all on the starting line. There is no time to lose. There is a large black banner with the inscription "Open Hands Broken Nails". Everyone is on the starting line. Everyone is here to run, not to exchange recipes of meatballs. Paco is running today too. Not even the time of a crying speech in the "Save Private Ryan" style that he is already in the lead and runs like crazy. Everyone runs like a rocket, but I proceed quietly. On the plain I’m usually quite good, but here there are strong people, no bullshit. They run without ever lowering the pace. Step by step. For seven kilometers. Seven kilometers is the distance necessary not only to spit the soul we have in our body, but to embark on a spiritual journey. Do you want to know how? Try to stay behind the Coach. Try biting his shins. Try to make him nervous. We all are at the +Ceremonial+ to have fun, of course. But the Coach is not at the +Ceremonial+ to be fooled by a guy from the suburbs of Trento as I am. I know this and I almost start having fun.
Being punk means do not care, or to be more polite fucking do not care, in the most disparate and desperate way possible, whether it is about society, good customs, your neighbor or your neighbor's dog. This does not mean being careless, let me be clear.
Running in the plains is like stepping on the grapes: if you push well you can go on well and the result is good. I passed the Coach a couple of times but I felt the breath of the Ligurian horse on my neck while I had nothing left but the bile that came down from my mouth. He passed me and crossed the finish line before me. He was surprised.
It means accepting yourself and what you feel towards the world, because of the experiences you’ve had, what you have done and what you will do (if you ever care about, of course).
“Matte but what the fuck you had in your body”? he asked. I was surprised too. “I don’t know Coach, I just tried to stay behind you” I answered. I’ve almost beaten the Coach, that day. In the end it was just about running for a plastic necklace. The necklaces have always scared me because my mother always told me that you can hang yourself in your sleep with those things. Perhaps, if you think about it, that day we run for more than a plastic necklace.
You are you and you do what you feel to do.

Behind Alpina Goggles BY DENIS PICCOLO ITW TO MORITZ MAIER
Can you tell me the history of Alpina? From its birth up to nowadays. The most important steps of the brand. Alpina has over 35 years of experience in helmets and eyewear. The company was founded in 1980 in Friedberg near Augsburg, Bavaria. Many innovations in ski, sports and sunglasses have made Alpina known and it became a market leader in ski goggles in Germany.
What about an Alpina helmet? What are its main features? First and foremost, all helmets must comply with current safety standards. Alpina also tries to optimise safety, comfort and fit with various material constructions and special product designs. Only a helmet that fits properly can provide optimum protection in the event of a collision. If the helmet is well ventilated, the inner padding is comfortable on the skin and easily removable and washable, comfort and the willingness to wear a helmet are increased.
Since 1992, Alpina's product range has also included cycling and ski helmets. The majority of the products are developed at the company's headquarters in Sulzemoos (between Munich and Augsburg) and produced in Bavaria. “Made in Germany” is an important concern for Alpina, in order to ensure the highest product quality.
But the look is also decisive. Cool designs, trendy colours and a harmonious interaction of helmet and glasses are very important to us at Alpina. What is the targeted customer for an Alpina product? Our customers are looking for quality and maximum protection while maintaining an uncomplicated active sports lifestyle.
Our main goal is that all our clients can enjoy their adventure and concentrate fully on the moment - we take care of the rest. You produce helmets and goggles for winter and summer sports. Tell me about the main features that an Alpine goggle should have. In addition to UV protection of the eyes, Alpina is committed in developing new technologies that enhance visual comfort for skiers and cyclists. These include, for example, Varioflex technology, in which the lens automatically adapts to changing lighting conditions. Another Alpina’s highlight technology is Quattroflex. The pole filter filters interfering stray and glare light and the contrast is additionally enhanced. That’s minimise reflections and ice surfaces or dangerous situations can be seen much better.
With our new collection, which is also very style-conscious in terms of colours, we want to address freeriders who feel comfortable in the backcountry as well as all winter sports enthusiasts who want to feel safe and look good on the slopes. Under the motto Colour up your Passion, everyone has the opportunity to express his personality with a special colour theme. A special concern for us, however, is also the youngest generation on the slopes. Children need special protection and Alpina has new Disney motifs in order for them to like wearing their helmets. This guarantees fun in the snow.

such accidents, Alpina has the BE VISIBLE helmet collection in its program. Bright yellow, reflectors and tail lights increase visibility and safety. The visibility of cyclists can in fact be increased by more than 100 meters.
Tell me something about the collections that you are going to present next, are there some interesting news? Reduced designs with strong and individual colours currently dominate our collections. With the Maroi, we have launched a very cool new freeride helmet for this winter. We will continue to work on this line in the future - and we also have some surprises in store for the future.
The bright yellow of the BE VISIBLE helmets has been proven also to better the visibility of cyclists during the day, whether on the way to school, to work, to the swimming lake or on the after-hours rides with the racing bike.
You've got a respectable friends team, on what are the criteria when choosing your Alpina ambassadors? The athletes must fit our brand and they should also be able to identify with our brand values. This includes a positive and friendly appearance, they should love nature and share their moments and experiences with their friends. And if the athletes are successful or implement interesting film projects, of course we are also happy about it.
Your Athleisure, Casual Chic and Prêt-à-sporter lines instead are very attentive to the aesthetic part of the product, how important is it in today's market? How and where do you take inspiration for your models? With our Fashion Line we want to make a clear statement: we are Alpina and we set trends. In addition, we set ourselves apart from our competitors, which is decisive for the market today. The inspiration for our collections comes from the most diverse areas, such as nature, the textile industry or the automotive industry.
What does the word outdoor mean to Alpina? By outdoor we mean everything that happens outside, from micro adventure to cycling and alpine mountaineering. It is a broad field and we try to cover a multitude of these activities with our products.
Any future projects about branding, technologies and sustainability? Of course! We are already testing some technologies, new products and revolutionary approaches, also in terms of sustainability. But I can't talk about this in detail at the moment :)
You've realized the Be Visible line, with yellow fluo helmets to be more visible when you cycle, can you tell me something about this project? The biggest danger for cyclists is to be overlooked in road traffic. To avoid

In 1947 Vitale Bramani, the historical founder of the Italian brand, world leader in the technological development and production of high performance rubber soles, opened his first factory in Gallarate, also in the province of Varese. Its name was Gomma Tecnica, and at the beginning it had 40 employees.

the proper footwear to deal with mixed surfaces, extreme cold, ice and the large amount of snow that the group encounters on their route. The incident has been the spring that pushes Bramani to look for a solution in order that tragic events like that would not happen anymore. He decided to develop a sole capable of exerting excellent traction on mixed surfaces and has the brilliant intuition of using the same technique used in the manufacture of tires in the soles of the shoes.
In fact, the R&D, Production, Marketing, Sales, Test Center and Design departments are all here, in order to ensure that every brand partner has the same level of quality and reliability. However, Vibram was not born in Albizzate. To retrace its history from the beginning, in fact we must not go too far. Just a few kilometers away. In 1947 Vitale Bramani, the historical founder of the Italian brand, world leader in the technological development and production of high performance rubber soles, opened his first factory in Gallarate, also in the province of Varese. Its name was Gomma Tecnica, and at the beginning it had 40 employees.
In 1937 Bramani brought his project to a close using the technology of vulcanized rubber and developing what will become the famous "Carrarmato" design, the first big Vibram revolution and that still remains one of the most popular soles for mountain lovers and sports enthusiasts. This particular Carrarmato design had revolutionized the practice of mountaineering and the world of footwear, allowing unprecedented performance in terms of resistance to abrasion, traction and grip. The first rubber soles branded Vibram were born, they took their the name from the new company founded by Bramani, whose name comes from the acronym of the one of the founder (VItale BRAMani). The factory grew and in 1957 moved to the headquarters of Albizzate (VA), where is still today.
But let's take a further step back. The history of Vibram began about ten years earlier, precisely in 1935, when Bramani, an Italian Alpine Club Academician, lost six alpine companions in a tragic Alpine ascent on the Rasica. The tragedy happened because of the lack

Vibram is active in more than 120 countries on a worldwide scale in collab with more than 1000 partners in the world. The models of the soles developed each season are over 150, those can be classified into two macro categories depending on how the project is made.
This is just the first of Vibram's long-standing success stories, a history of more than 80 years that has changed the world of outdoor footwear, occupational safety, lifestyle, orthopedics and repair.
Among the most recent innovations there is Vibram Arctic Grip, the most advanced "all rubber" technology in terms of grip on ice, especially on wet one, which the yellow octagon company has ever developed. In addition to the soles equipped with Arctic Grip, Vibram has also created the Portable Performance Sole, the first portable sole equipped with an easily transportable technology, it presents a practical opening and closing system that can be done with a single movement, and it can be applied to the shoe in case of need .
A history passed through great and fundamental winning stages such as the conquest of the K2. In 1954 a team of Italian alpinists led by Lino Lacedelli and Achille Compagnoni, equipped with special boots with Vibram soles and manufactured by the Dolomite company, finally reached the summit of the K2: it was a great achievement celebrated by the international outdoor community, and it marked the debut of the "specialization" of shoes with the use of different models for each specific stage of the expedition: trekking, approach, high altitude, and much more.
The latest challenge of the Italian brand is instead Vibram Litebase, the innovative solution designed with the aim of drastically reducing the weight of the sole (which is 30-40% lighter) by reducing the rubber sole, keeping the layout and the shape of the plugs unchanged and without affecting the performance.
A story always uphill, always alongside great sportsmen and explorers, who over the years sees continuous innovations, product launches and technology patents that make Vibram a company that has been able to innovate continuously and keep up with the times .
What immediately catches the eyes, therefore, is how everything, for Vibram, starts from the sole, which remains the company's true core business, starting from which all finished products are designed and realized.
The Vibram production can include in its catalog numerous types of soles and highly performing and innovative products: Vibram Evaflex, Vibram Grip, Vibram Gumlite. Up to the modern era and the second big revolution of the brand. In 2004 was born Vibram FiveFingers, a sort of a foot glove, a real "second skin", which revolutionizes the concept of "barefoot" walking.
Even today after all these years and throughout the world, Vibram is increasingly synonymous with guarantee and high performance, and is constantly projected towards the future. Up to date, the company has more than 750 employees worldwide, including more than 270 people working in the headquarters of Albizzate with a production of more than 40 million soles every year.
But the Albizzate’s brand also proposes more design solutions suitable for the everyday life, such as the Vibram Furoshiki The Wrapping Sole, born from the desire to create a sole that wraps around the foot, inspired by the Japanese art of furoshiki. A both aesthetic and functional footwear for the lifestyle in which the sole itself wraps the foot and that has won the famous and prestigious Compasso D'Oro ADI edition 2018 prize.
Vibram is active in more than 120 countries on a worldwide scale in collab with more than 1000 partners in the world. The models of the soles developed each season are over 150, those can be classified into two macro categories depending on how the project is made. The sole can be Open, which means that is designed by Vibram for a specific use destination whose sale is open to any brand.

This category provides a greater involvement of the partner company, a design specifically designed for a specific upper that leads to the creation of exclusive technical projects.
of the sole" is carried out with pride and exported around the world. The headquarters of Vibram in Albizzate is still the active and beating heart of the company, where most of the industrial design and development activities are concentrated, as well as the coordination and the setting of the guidelines for the two international branches (USA and China), in order to guarantee a reliable and constant quality standard to customers all over the world.
The brand is also present in the United States with a sales office and R&D and product testing departments. Another commercial office is located in Japan which deals with sales and marketing with local brands, while in Brazil the company is present with a licensee and in China with the futuristic Vibram Technological Center dedicated to testing and developing new products. The Center has the dual mission of expanding the range of Vibram technologies and strengthening transversal collaborations with other operators in the sector, building a real network of qualified partners.
Indeed, the famous octagons of the Vibram logo, that have always characterized the soles of the brand, are only realized in the Albizzate headquarters. They are produced internally (and subsequently shipped worldwide) because their compound contains a component that allows the recognition of the true soles from the false and counterfeit ones. The octagon is punched on a special device and printed separately. This aspect also contributes to the fame of the brand in the world.
The company also has two flagship stores, the first one in Milan, precisely in via Sanzio. Inside the store it is possible not only to try all Vibram FiveFingers models, but also to discover historical "Vibram pieces", such as ads, soles and catalogs and to get to know all the company's products. The second flagship store opened its doors in Boston in 2012, in the heart of the US city, where, as in the Milan store, it is possible to experience a real "Vibram experience.
For over 80 years the unmistakable yellow octagon is the symbol of a company that is synonymous with quality, performance, safety, innovation and design. Since the creation of the first rubber soles for mountaineering, Vibram has positioned itself as the reference standard in its market. The Vibram soles, born from the desire to raise the levels of safety and protection, are known all over the world and are the result of a constant commitment in research and development in which about 10% of the annual turnover is invested.
In 2018, there was a further step forward on the European and US market. The company inaugurated its Portland headquarters in Oregon, and the new spaces of the Vibram Connection Lab, both in via Voghera in Milan and in Montebelluna, a point of reference for Vibram partners active in the famous Italian footwear district.
All Vibram products pursue a triple quality objective: better performance, maximum comfort level and greater durability. This promise is guaranteed by the stringent static and dynamic tests carried out both in the laboratory and in the field by the Vibram Tester Team, established in 1999 with the aim of testing Vibram products in the most difficult and prohibitive situations, contributing to the constant company in research and development.
Furthermore, Vibram launched in 2015 the Vibram Sole Factor project: a wheeled lab that moves from place to place to bring Vibram soles into direct contact with the final consumers and to make them understand how important and fundamental these soles are in whole footwear. It is a personalized service that through the Sole Factor Mobile Lab leads you to identify the perfect sole for your needs thanks to different possibilities.
Without losing sight of ecosustainability, a theme that has been close to the heart of the brand for several years, let just think about the Vibram Ecostep compound launched on the market ten years ago. An innovative eco-compound that incorporates production waste, capable of reducing waste and the use of virgin materials up to the 30%.
Many news and a great opening to all markets, but the heart of the company still remains in Italy, where the "culture
Vibram soles and products remain today, as 80 years ago, some of the few essential elements for every adventurer, athlete and lover of outdoor sports. Vibram soles are not just soles, they are "the" soles, always synonymous with quality, reliability and performance.

Fish & Snow ITW DENIS PICCOLO PHOTO DARCY BASHA
From snowbarding to fly fishing, Darcy Bacha is globally known as one of the most famous action sports photographers in the US. He was born and grew up in Philadelphia, where his photographic style was soon influenced by the first skateboard shootings with his friends. Moving to the west coast, at Mt.Hood in Oregon, he began working with Transworld Snowboarding. Now Darcy divides his time between the mountains and the snow-covered cities in different regions of the world where he practices and shoots snowboards, and the pristine rivers perfect for fly fishing.
When did you become a professional photographer and what has changed since then? My first job shooting snowboarding photos was at Windells camp. Mt.Hood is such a hub for snowboarding during the summer it was easy to make connections working at the camp, which would transition, into shooting in the winter. I owe a lot of my success as a snowboard photographer to those first couple years shooting at Windells for sure. One of the key relationships I built in the early years was working with Transworld Snowboarding, which has developed into my primary job during the winter months. Unfortunately, Snowboarding photography isn’t really cutting it these days to make a living so I’ve branch off a bit. Shooting fly fishing as well as some other commercial jobs is helping keep the dream alive.
Hi Darcy, tell us something about who you are, what you do, where you live. Tell us about your story. I’m a photographer based just outside of Portland, Oregon. I moved out here from Philadelphia about 13 years ago. Photography snowboarding and fishing have always been a huge passions in my life. But it wasn’t until I moved to Oregon that they would become so obtainable in such close proximity.
You're one of the most famous snowboard photographers in the world, what does it mean to be an action sports photographer in the US? It’s crazy, I feel like there’s still so much room for me to grow as a photographer. Where I’m at now in photography was a dream just 10 years ago, and now that I’ve achieved that dream, I’ve been asking myself what’s next? I think my passion now is telling a visual story. The action is just a part of the story which is snowboarding. I’m so stoked on projects like the one the Thomas Delfino just did like Zabardast.
When did your passion for photography start and how did it develop? It started when I was about 14 years old, I got a 35mm film camera for Christmas and I would take photos of my friends skateboarding and develop the shots in my schools darkroom. It wasn’t until I got my camera stolen and saved up every cent I could to buy a new one that I knew photography was a super important part of my life.

both take you to some of the most beautiful places in the world. I think Eric’s movie Alignment explains it the best. Fly fishing is a release for such a crazy and tense sport that snowboarding can be.
You’re also passionate about Fly Fishing, when and how was this passion born? Growing up in Philadelphia my dad would take me out on his boat off the Jersey shore every weekend. We didn’t do any fly fishing back then, but I loved it so much and totally got addicted. When I moved out to the west coast I found some old fly rods and figured it would be a cool way to try to catch fish. I had no idea what I was doing at first, but Abe Blair knew I was getting really into it and invited me on some trips on the Deschutes where I got my first real taste of fly fishing. I haven’t stopped since.
Tell me something about them as snowboarders, fishermen and people. I know they’re all explorers. It doesn’t matter if we’re in the mountains or on the river, they always want to know what’s around the corner. Fly Fishing is the only type of fishing accepted by the outdoor world, can you explain why? I think it’s just because it represents the highest form of difficulty of fishing. It takes a long time to master, while anyone can pick up a rod and throw a bobber with a worm on a hook and catch a fish.
What does Fly Fishing mean to you? After I blew out my knee for the second time I never really made a full recovery. My progression with snowboarding stopped, and I was in search of something to fill that adrenaline void. I know fly fishing seems like a weird way to compensate, but when you get that bite, especially from a steelhead which is my favorite fish to catch, you get an insane adrenaline rush, but you don’t have to risk your body to get it.
What is the place for snowboarding you love the most and what is the one for fishing? I love fishing and snowboarding in British Columbia, they both offer the best of both worlds as far as I’m concerned. You sometimes come here in Europe, what are your favorite places? Last season I got shown around by Victor Daviet. We explored the mountains of France and Italy, but what stood out to me was the city of Annecy. The culture and buildings are so much different than here in the United States. Whenever I have friends now getting ready for a trip to explore Europe I make sure they stop in Annecy for sure.
Some of the snowboarders you often shoot such as Curtis Ciszek, Eric & John Jackson (if you want to add others feel free to do so) also practice Fly Fishing. Why do you think there is this affinity between the two practices, Snowboards & Fly Fishing? I think it’s the sense of adventure that both offer. They

Dying for Love PHOTOS AND TEXT M AT T EO PAVA N A
He was staring at the horizon from the top of the promontory like an inspector, as if he were investigating something, as if he were looking for an answer. He looked like a person who was listening to something, as if the solution to his questions could be brought to him by the wind, the water or the warm rays of the evening sun. He wore a pair of black glasses with dark lenses and thick poles.
His hands were in his black jacket pockets, and he held one leg up on the wall in front of him in a sea dog pose, like a captain on the bow of a sailing ship. The light burned the sky with shades of red, orange, and blue, and filtered through the sparkling, rippling water of the ocean that absorbed its nuances. Nuno is a tall, robust man. His head is round, slightly elongated, and his hair is very short, almost shaved. He has a beard of the same length and dullness, which is why it is not possible to distinguish the beginning or the end in the areas of the temples and the nose. He has an olive complexion, enhanced by a remarkable tan. The eyes, black and deep, give confidence to those who cross his gaze. The open door of his car reveals a surfboard, obviously black.
huge walls of water to crash regularly to be surfed. First you have to study the position of the spot respect to the swell: if you are too close to the source of the storm, the waves will be great, but also chaotic and dirty; if they are too far away, the dimensions will slowly grow smaller. Another important aspect is the bathymetry of the seabed near and far from the coast, which is responsible for the final measurement of the wave. Then, the local wind in the area where you surf takes on an even more important factor, since it determines the quality of the wave. In this case, weak wind must be preferred off-shore (from the land to the sea) because it removes dangerous ripples to the wave that are often a reason for falling into the water. The Praia do Norte of Nazarè has been for the past twenty years the mecca where the highest waves in the world are formed. In November 2017 the Brazilian Rodrigo Koxa has indeed set the record of the highest wave ever surfed in the world (80 feet that means 24 meters high).
Nuno is a surfer. I ask him some infos about the conditions that we would find in the following days in that well-known region of Portugal, Praia do Norte of Nazarè. I’ve left with my friend Thomas to document the small but exciting big waves surfing world. These terms denote a practice of surfing on waves that exceed 5-6 meters in height. In order for the waves to exceed certain dimensions, it is generally necessary to have a series of important factors. Normally, a sufficiently powerful perturbation must occur, that is able to move a considerable mass of water (cyclones, typhoons, hurricanes, and so on), which in turn flows into the coast in the form of a sea storm. Not every coastline allow the
In the past, you could only hear stories about Jaws in Maui, Mavericks in Half Moon Bay and Teahupoo in Tahiti. The characteristic that makes Nazaré so unique is just one: its seabed extends over the longest submarine canyon in Europe, which has a length of 230 km and depth up to 5000 meters. In order to generate exceptionally large waves, the energy of the swell must converge from the Canyon to Praia do Norte. Also, near the spot there is a submarine step that generates an impressive leap in level of the seabed, from a few hundred to a few tens of meters.

While Nuno goes on in this detailed explanation both of our gazes turned towards that coast lashed in a manner dominant by the waves. We talk as if we already knew each other, without even looking into each other's eyes. My attention to that noisy tide fades away when Nuno tells me:
his board and riding the waves with the sound of his violin for a bunch of seconds. The rubbing of the hair on the ropes sanctions the end of that chaotic dimension and detaches the beginning of a reality imposed by its wise fingers. A melody that smells of death. A requiem. The wave has the double face of angelic seductress and ruthless murderess. When surfing the margin of error due to inexperience or inattention is minimal: a wipeout from the board could be fatal. To give a rather concrete example, a 10-meter-high wave with a 20-meter breaker front unloads a pressure of 410 tons on the body of the victim. Technology is helping the surfer with durable helmets and mute with inflation airbags, but what prevents the catastrophe is the experience.“If you fall, you die”, tells me Nuno seriously. And the risk of falling is huge. The consequences are disastrous. When falling you must curl up to avoid the dislocation of the joints and the consequences of drowning. You must have an excellent physical preparation, especially aerobic and pulmonary, since being overwhelmed by a wave can mean spending so much time underwater before you can re-emerge, an interval of time that allows to another wave to form and break. A crash near the cliff instead means certain death. Nuno pulls out the violin and starts playing, while the sun escapes to the west. A question arises between that sweet melody: “why risking so much”?
“I’m a musician. And I like playing the violin while I surf”. I turn around thinking of having heard wrong, but his excellent English leaves no room for misunderstanding. Nuno plays the violin while surfing huge waves. Nuno is a very well known guy in Nazarè, but Thomas and I didn’t know that. We left for this place without gathering any infos just to be able to be surprised in unexpected meetings like this one. It is a technique that I recommend experimenting. Nuno can’t be stopped now. He tells me that he met the music when he was still young and that the surf came slowly, over time. It was an opportunity like another outside the front door. He also tells me that he is a passionate mountaineer. It is right in the mountains that he found the inspiration to combine, in an extravagant way, the violin and the surf. He played it for the first time in the mountains of Ecuador with a friend. From that moment on he decided to bring the violin to the tops of the world to spread a message of harmony of nature and of the fusion of the elements. Playing on the surfboard was a spontaneous consequence of that simple gesture.
I try to imagine the answer after spending the day watching those happy, carefree, vaguely in love surfers. I tell myself that the deep feelings you feel for the time you surf a wave must be really powerful if you push yourself so far, until risking your life. Mark Foo, an American surfer, once said: “It is not so tragic to die for something you love”.
Nuno loves the mountain maybe even more than the ocean. I can read it in his eyes and I can hear it in the sound of his voice. The mountain for him means evasion, research, peace. A big wave is just the reincarnation of the mountain in a changing and dynamic form. It is just beyond the long and narrow promontory of Nazarè that Nuno goes daily to climb: the frothy foam turns into snow brought back by the wind and the action of riding a wave becomes the escape from a thunderous avalanche. In all that chaos of underwater currents I can imagine Nuno standing up on
Mark died drown in the sea in December 1994, while surfing in Mavericks, California, while doing what he loved. Because in the end it is not only and exclusively about being recklessness, about risking your life to feel alive, nor even about winning over death. I think it's just and exclusively about love. It is a force that pushes us to get involved, to fight and plan, so much so that it forces us to risk death sometimes.
Listening to Nuno’s melody mixing with the sound and the scent of nature, when the water fades to the shore like the end of a perfect symphony, everything seems to make sense. For a second, I died for love too. Maybe I would die for love too.

Unexpected Dolomites BY TEDDY SOPPELSA
7 days on the run in the wildest heart of the Dolomites
I
am even more and more convinced that happiness is inversely proportional to the number of actions we take. The less we do, the greater is the depth of each experience and the satisfaction in what we do. On the Alta Via Dolomiti Bellunesi routes our existence is reduced to about fifteen activities: wandering with your own backpack, crossing woods and prairies, following the grassy ridges and the sides of rocky walls, stopping every now and then to observe, to photograph and read, stopping by small shelters (with little comfort but welcoming) to lie down and then leaving again. And so we discover that limitations are a source of happiness and freedom. An absolute freedom but circumscribed to time and space that separates us from the goal, before yielding to all the temptations that life offers us. Our lives, in the city, take place in a continuous effort to increase wellbeing and when we discover the luxurious sobriety of the five refuges that guard the Alta Via Dolomiti Bellunesi, we remain displaced by how we can quickly become accustomed to the superfluity of urban life. We find happiness in the little things we encounter on the paths, in the essentiality of the actions we take; luxury is in the beauty of the landscapes that strike us for their diversity of environments and rocks, for the incredible richness of the flora and for that feeling of wild nature that always accompanies us and that confuses us every time we see the signs of men that have inhabited it. The sense of wildness that certain places transmit is linked to the sense of distance, the distance that separates us from urban life, the effort that we have to do to reach them. Walking on feet for so many hours in the Belluno Dolomites is a way to get away, to mark the difference from everyday life. We are in in the southern part of the province of Belluno, inside the Parco Nazionale Dolomiti Bellunesi that is fully crossed by the Alta Via, from north to south. The genesis of this route seems to follow a little the nature of these mountains that demand long times and tenacity to be known and loved. The route, born with the idea of connecting the areas of greatest naturalistic value of the Parco, remained in oblivion for twenty-five years, until, last year, when a group of guys from the CAI Feltre Section discovered it and fell in love with it.
70
I am even more and more convinced that happiness is inversely proportional to the number of actions we take.

* Around that they built a project, involving the Parco, the CAI Sections and the shelter managers, they wanted to give it back to life by using their experiences, also with the contribution of new sensibilities. In fact, if the initial idea of who conceived this project was to make it “known”, now the focus is mainly on “how to make known” the protected area. What matters is not so much the kilometers traveled, the differences in height, the hours spent or the goal, but how to get to the destination. Through the tools of digital communication the goal of the project is to bring the mountains of the Parco Nazionale Dolomiti Bellunesi to the attention of hikers looking for an authentic experience of walking in the wilderness, a few steps from the most populated Dolomites, accepting the inconveniences, the efforts and the limits.
The hiker of the Alta Via Dolomiti Bellunesi accepts to deal with a harsh, difficult environment, without pretending to modify it to his needs (around the Alps there are many easy routes that he can possibly dedicate himself to!). He is aware that the intrinsic value of certain places requires not to cross them, to stay on the edge, to circumvent them, to contain the number of visitors. In the end, our typical hiker, knows that to fully know a place you have to immerse yourself in it with all your senses, preferably slowly. The knowledge of the environment is conquered with the slowness that does not mean walking slowly, but just walking without hurry, with time and patience.
The route starts from Forno di Zoldo, the northernmost point of the Parco and crosses the chains of the Prampèr Mezzodì, Talvéna and Schiara. It goes down to Val Cordévole, it goes around the wild and almost impenetrable Monti del Sole and at the top of the Valle del Mis rises towards the Eterni Piani, just below the Cimónega Dolomites. The last two stages wind along the ridge of the Vette Feltrine, then descend towards Feltre, the southern gate of the Parco, where the Ata Via ends. In the first part of the route, classical dolomitic scenarios follow steep slopes of grass, basins carved by glaciers and peaks of grassy-rocky terraces. In the second part, beyond the Valle del Mis, aspects of the Dolomites and pre-Alps mix wonderfully in an absolutely extraordinary environment in contact with a recognized nature, enriched by the mysterious charm of places where the myths of many popular legends are hidden.
72
The knowledge of the environment is conquered with the slowness that does not mean walking slowly, but just walking without hurry, with time and patience.
73
Stages and points of support are freely programmable with a single common denominator: big differences in height, long distances, spectacular environments and routes far from the mass tourism. The shelters are not those of the most emblazoned Dolomites, here you won’t always find hot water, electricity and the signal for your cell phone is often absent as the à la carte menu, but the atmosphere and the human contact that you will encounter are worth more of many comforts and technologies.
It will take you 7 days to complete the entire route of almost 108 km, with an average of about 6 hours of walking per day. In addition to the main route you could face some variations that would allow you to extend the knowledge to other areas of the Parco. The route winds along well-marked paths, identified by the CAI trail signs and, for almost two thirds of it, it follows the route of the famous Alte Vie delle Dolomiti n.1 and n.2.
The project is developed with the contribution of the Parco Nazionale Dolomiti Bellunesi and in collaboration with the CAI sections of Agordo, Belluno, Longarone, Oderzo and Val di Zoldo and Feltre. Fundamental was the contribution of three major companies in the outdoor sector (AKU, Ferrino and Karpos) who appreciated the project and decided to support it. In addition to financial support, Ferrino will provide camping kits (tent, mattress and sleeping bag) offering direct support to those shelters that due to the small number of beds struggle to give hospitality to all hikers. AKU and Karpos will also supply footwear and clothing to shelter managers. Summer 2018 has been dedicated to the definition of the last logistical aspects, the GPS tracking of the route, the affixing of signs and the collection of photo and video material for the promotion. Since a couple of months a comprehensive website is available www.altaviadolomitibellunesi.it and it is gradually enriching with in-depth information and multimedia contents. The facebook and instagram channels are also active, can follow the progress of the project and find out more about the places of the Alta Via. Now the project is going on with the finalization of digital communication tools and the creation of a series of services for hikers (such as vouchers for shelters to avoid having to carry too much money, a shuttle service for go there and come back) as well as printing a guide, a sort of road book to keep in your backpack. A lot of tools that will be 100% operative by the next summer season.
74
The shelters are not those of the most emblazoned Dolomites, here you won’t always find hot water, electricity and the signal for your cell phone is often absent as the à la carte menu, but the atmosphere and the human contact that you will encounter are worth more of many comforts and technologies.

The Ride to the Wrath TEXT BY CHRIS MCCLEAN PHOTO BY JELLE MUL
77
“There’s a Sea Eagle sitting over there” she said from the window that serves food. At first we couldn't see anything but after a while we were finally able to spot its dark outline; a majestic creature sat on a wall amongst the ruined out buildings. “They’re super rare” the girl went on and explained how we had been very lucky to even glimpse one in the wild for a few seconds. “Now, what can I get you?”
...
T
he Cape Wrath Fellowship was born in 1949 by the cycling journalist Rex Coley. He was tired of the competitive nature of cycling and decided to create a fellowship dedicated to the experience of riding along Britain’s wildest, most remote road.
road heading north. Our only stop was to buy some firewood at a local store in Lairg because I heard it would be challenging to get some in Sandwood. We also stocked up on snacks, a bottle of whiskey and a few appropriately named Flat Tire beers.
Joining this fellowship has never been easy. Starting from Keoldale, you have to cross the Kyle of Durness by ferry, and then set off along the loneliest road in Britain, built in 1828 to serve the Cape Wrath lighthouse. Hilly and winding, it is a road but for sure not an easy one. Nowadays supplies for the lighthouse are still landed by boat rather than by that road which is a 11 miles long, narrow, and a very rough path. Cape Wrath has always been on top of my imaginary bucket list of things to see and do, especially with it being very close to Sandwood Bay; a mythical beach only accessible by a 7 km long winding gravel path.
In Sandwood we parked the car and packed out bikes. As almost everything in this little adventure, even reaching Sandwood was not that simple. The road was lumpy, especially with a trailer with boards and wetsuits, but we were lucky there was a clear sky with the sun out. We shed layers and reached a part of the trail with some drainage channels bordered by rocks.
The plan was to reach both of them, spend a night in each place and then head to Thurso by car for a Patagonia yulex wetsuit meeting. We would strap boards and wetsuits on our bike on our way into Sandwood bay hoping that we would score some nice waves before the dark.
We had to stop every 10-20 meters to lift the trailer over those drainage channels, but we didn’t mind at all. That’s the beauty of bikepacking; it turns every journey into an adventure and the end goal becomes secondary, what’s important is the road itself. The descent to the ocean was breathtaking. As we rounded the final turn the view was amazing. The sun was casting a hazy light on the sea and little waves were breaking off some rocks in the middle of the bay and further to the North.
I met my old friend Jelle at the Inverness airport and after some biscuits and a coffee, we hit the

... When the captain reassuringly told us tales of cyclists breaking their collarbones on the road and having to be airlifted out, we were not completely sure what we would face called by Rex Coley "the loneliest road in Britain”.
The next morning the rain woke us up bouncing on the tent. We slept like babies thanks to the whiskey and our bodies were thankful for the rain that allowed us to lie in. I didn’t feel like leaving the warmth of my sleeping bag, but soon it became 10.30 am and it was time to move. We had coffee and porridge for breakfast while the rain became a drizzle. With the tide coming it, a little wave started to peel again, so It was time put our suits on. We jumped in and rode the waves for a couple of hours on our boards or bodysurfed until the rain disappeared. We still had some time to ride, so it was time to hit the road again.
ster, to make the trip but he told us that the spring tides are the lowest ones and the boat might get stuck while crossing. The night began to fall and of course we didn’t want to spend the night stuck in the Beulah in the middle of the Kyle of Durness with two strangers . Disappointedly we decided to camp on the wrong side of the Kyle and just wait for the day to come. The following day the sun was shining bright, once again we had coffee and porridge while waiting for the ferry. Together waiting with us there were two couples on mountain bikes. Quickly they decided to take the bus to the lighthouse as they wisely didn’t want to risk their bikes on that 20 km gravel road. Jelle and I had to be back at the ferry in the late afternoon to make it to Thurso that same day, so had decided to ditch the trailer and a few supplies, but our bikes still remained relatively loaded.
We packed and rode our bikes back on the sand dunes, then again along the drainage channels and back to tarmac. The ride was smooth with some steep climbs, but the scenery again offset any hardships. We stopped and enjoyed a very good fish and chips at the Old School in Inshegra, along the road between Blairmore and Keodale. This is where we would have to take the ferry.

tire. Jelle helped me change my flat tyre with no levers. Still amazed how fast and easy that went, we hit the gravel again on our way back on the track that run alongside and overlooking the Kyle of Durness.
We looked again and saw the Sea Eagle that the girl at the counter of the cafe had been pointing out. We observed it while having our tomato and lentil soup which tasted great. A French guy who walked from Fort William and had been walking for 15 days straight started to chat with us. He was sweaty and dirty but simply happy while he gulped down his can of Tennents.
A few photo’s later and with big smiles we sat out on the dock because we had to wait for the tide to fill in before John the Ferrymaster could come to pick us up by boat. There were some seals sunbathing and we observed them while eating biscuits while drinking the appropriately named Flat Tire beer; earlier stashed away as a treat for when we would have joined the Cape Wrath Fellowship. We made it. We rode that bumpy, wild and remote road. A road worth riding and Rex Coley would agree with me.
After the soup we took some pictures by the light house strolled a little around and hit the road again. Soon I would hit a rock and quiet fast all the air would escape through the snakebit in my

From glaciers to the ocean Welcome to West Canada BY ELENA GOGNA & SIMONE MONDINO
I
magine you are at Malpensa airport at the end of September with a crazy sun and 20 Celsius degrees, and, after a 15 hours flight, you find yourself in the middle of the winter in Alberta.
to the west of Canada, that would take us to the Banff National Park, the British Columbia up to Tofino and then back to Alberta to discover the Jasper National Park.
For people like the two of us who insanely love the cold and the snow, all this can be exciting. We immediately rented the car, starting our long Canadian journey.
The wild nature and its rugged landscapes were the frame of our Canadian itinerary that saw us busy shooting some of the most beautiful scenery in the world during long and short hikes.
We soon left the city of Calgary behind us and with full amazement we noticed that, kilometer after kilometer, the temperature continued to drop and the raindrops left more and more space to the first snowflakes, it seemed unreal!
Miles after miles, the landscape around us left us more and more speechless, an alternation of lakes of the most incredible colors to seemed almost surreal, mountains that sometimes emerge out of the clouds, the sun that occasionally came out and snow storms that kept us company throughout the trip giving us wonderful rainbows like those observed by surprise on the Peyto Lake.
Even if everything seemed so perfect, we began to feel tired, that’s why we decided to prepare our gears for the next day. But we were going to sleep very little because a glance out of the window was enough to observe that everything around us was covered with snow and that made us jump off the bed; the clock turned 5:30 am. I immediately grabbed my Nikon, a faithful companion of every trip, and we run outside to admire Banff, a wonderful town located in the heart of the Rocky Mountains. As soon as we went out the snowfall left space to a grey sky but less and less threatening. Our official trip had finally started, a journey
There snowflakes danced in the air, the clouds run fast and the mixing of light and shadow made the landscape that surrounded us even more authentic, further enhancing the shades of water. We were really speechless. Even the most famous Lake Louise, Moraine Lake and Bow Lake were characterized by their colors ranging from emerald to turquoise through the sapphire blue.

The emotion of that moment is difficult to describe by words, it was so unique and special, ad we decided to remain silent and to admire them, choosing to limit ourselves with a single photo to fully enjoy the show we had in front.
â—Š Postcard landscapes that alternated with the imposing glaciers that cover the steep walls of the Rocky Mountains and the dense forests that accompany visitors all along the Icefields Parkway which was a pleasure to travel through.
The emotion of that moment is difficult to describe by words, it was so unique and special, ad we decided to remain silent and to admire them, choosing to limit ourselves with a single photo to fully enjoy the show we had in front.
Our eyes were full of such beauty as we headed to the west in order to discover more about the British Columbia and incredibly not only we changed state but even season, an almost springlike climate welcomed us with temperatures that reached 15 Celsius degrees and colorful sunsets that led us to Whistler.
The weather continued to be perfect and we were able to have quiet excursions in the mountains between the majesty of Garibaldi Lake and the graceful simplicity of the Jaffre Lakes. Unfortunately we could not stop for a long time in that paradise because we still had a long way to go before arriving on the island of Vancouver, more precisely in Tofino where you are "almost" obliged to visit the Cathedral Grove, the famous protected park to admire the giant 800 years old firs.
We already knew the winter beauty of this ski resort but we never thought we would be so dazzled by everything around us.
We were aware of the often adverse weather conditions of this part of the Canadian land and in fact the sun could be admired for no more than two hours, leaving space to a remarkable waterfall that characterized our whole stay on the island.
With our backpacks and cameras ready we walked the many routes that allow you to reach lakes and glaciers. Thick forests alternate with more or less large lakes but with breathtaking colors that reminded us of those visited in Alberta. Steep routes, hairpin bends that led us to surprising meeting like the one with the bears, who careless about our presence continued eating blueberries.
The pouring rain, almost horizontal due to the strong wind, accompanied our every excursion on the numerous and wild beaches, meeting many surfers from all over the world. In those days more than ever, the island was even more suggestive and scenic.

ˇ The weather forecast remained bad until we resumed our journey to Jasper and as if by magic, after passing the city of Vancouver, winter came back strongly and on the radio you could hear about more than a half meter of fresh snow on the mountains, crazy!
ded south to discover the Athabasca Glacier. There the emotions were really contrasting, from the happiness for so much beauty to the melancholy if not even despair in seeing how many kilometers the glacier had retired over the years. Who knows if we will ever be able to go against that trend.
We already had so many kilometers behind us but the desire to discover and visit the Jasper National Park was stronger. As soon as we arrived the snowfall left space to a cobalt blue sky and it was wonderful to observe how the autumn colors beautifully mixed with the white of the snow, giving off truly striking light effects.
Our first Canadian trip was coming to an end as we approached a snow-covered Calgary, we had many thoughts going through our minds while we reached the airport. One in particular gave us hope for the future, and it was the fact that among the many people that we met we’ve always found a considerable respect for nature.
Bears, elk, squirrels, and caribous kept us company every day from Pyramid Lake to Maligne Lake without forgetting Talbot Lake and countless other wonders. Our kilometer count was close to reach five thousand but the desire to discover was still strong and so we hea-
A very last thought, we traveled for more than 5000 kilometers in this amazing journey, but we are sure of just one thing: we should learn from the Canadians to enhance and protect more the beauties we have at our doorstep because we deserve it.
"we should learn from the Canadians to enhance and protect more the beauties we have at our doorstep because we deserve it. "

S
imon and Sharon are two young South Tyrolean freeskiers. They have loved the mountains for a long time and have been magically attracted to them since childhood, spending every free minute on the snowy peaks.
These are the memories and the unique feelings that the mountains and the beautiful moments spent on the snow leave us. This is what brings us back on those peaks, again and again. Simon is an ex-skier who has however decided to leave the world of competitions to dedicate himself 100% to freeski. He spends every free minute on the mountains to get ready for his next freeriding project in the best possible way.
For both of them, freeride skiing is a lifestyle, an attitude towards life that distinguishes them. It represents that contagious sense of freedom and closeness to nature that only by practicing freeski you can experiment. Only skiing you can get that feeling of infinite freedom.
Sharon, on the other hand, defines herself as a part time woman and a part time freeskier. She lives every free minute skiing in the mountains of Salzburg and in the South Tyrol Dolomites. Choosing the location for a perfect day of freeride was relatively simple this time: it has snowed very little this winter in all South Tyrol, except in the northern areas near the borders with Austria. That's why Simon suggested to go to one of his reference spot in Valle Aurina, which offers countless opportunities for the backcountry.
On the snow they are alone, isolated and surrounded by nature, standing on the top of a summit. That same summit represents new horizons for them to discover, to go beyond their own past that allows them to face new challenges and exceed expectations. Many of us, like Simon and Sharon, love the mountains. So much that living life in the mountains becomes almost like a drug. When we are apart for too long, the mountain urges and calls us back. When we close our eyes we see it, and imagine the feeling that only a beautiful day spent in the mountains can give us.
Valle di Tures and Aurina are some of the most authentic and genuine mountain valleys of South Tyrol, surrounded by over 80 peaks that reach three thousand meters.
On the mountains there are no limits that can define the rules of yourself. All that matters is the constant search for fresh snow, virgin slopes and new lines. The more time you spend in the mountains the more you can learn about yourself: living together and in contact with nature creates an incredible connectivity never experienced in other places. And when we remember those special moments, we relive them with a sort of filter, everything looks beautiful and we only remember the positive aspects. Not only the acute and excited feeling after the best run of the season, between hugs and smiles, but also the silent understanding after a perfect day, when a quiet smile says everything and you don’t have the need to talk or add something more.
It is located in the northern part of Alto Adige, exactly where the southern slope of the Zillertal Alps meets the walls of the Dolomites, where the adventurous mountains revive the region. Skitouring and freeriding enthusiasts love these peaks over three thousand meters high that are accessible until late May or even until the beginning of June. Especially in spring this place offers many routes that start at high altitude and allow you to discover the beauty that this place has to offer and that donates you unique memories and feelings that only the mountain can give.

avazza, yes the coffee brand itself, has a very strong bond with the city of Turin, and for over 120 years has woken up the inhabitants of the Piedmont town with its aroma. Here in the city a new space has just been inaugurated, open to all citizens, to Italy and the world, where the new Lavazza offices interact with a gourmet restaurant and an interactive museum. It has a large event space and an archaeological area, an innovative bistrot and the headquarters of the Institute of Applied Arts and Design. A unique project, strongly desired by the fourth generation of the Lavazza family, co-created together with the number ones in the fields of architecture, food, scenography and design. A "Golden Team" that unites Cino Zucchi, Ferran Adrià and Federico Zanasi, Dante Ferretti and Ralph Appelbaum. This is how Nuvola Lavazza was born, and it showcases the "future roots"of the brand but without forgetting its old values.
cheerful and informal sharing of food, of a new vision of contemporary Italian cuisine. There is also a museum that accompanies visitors to discover the coffee universe, its rituals and Lavazza's success history in the world of communication. And much more: it is a place open to the city, it gives you the opportunity to admire the remains of an ancient early Christian church inside the archaeological area, it presents a large event space to host debates, congresses, cultural, musical and artistic events. It is a bistrot designed for employees, but open to the public and it is, in the end, the headquarters of the Institute of Applied Arts and Design with its more than 700 creative young people. It is the result of a total investment of more than 120 million euros, this project gives a new face - redeveloped and smart - to the Aurora district of Turin and is designed to inspire people, energize and activate dialogue, offering experiences of cultural, social, tasting and business sharing. Here the "future roots” are shown: it is, in fact, an ecosystem of places that takes strength from the past, energy from dialogue and looks beyond, inspired by the continuous need for innovation.
Nuvola Lavazza is spread over more than 30 thousand square meters where ideas and work, food and culture are produced, with the strong taste of Italian coffee and the ability, typical of a cloud (the translation of Nuvola), to make the imagination travel and to dream. This place is much more than the new headquarters of the company that in the early twentieth century invented the art of blending and became the spokesman of the authentic Italian coffee in the world. It is a space with many souls that, like clouds, can take on different forms. In fact, here there are innovative offices designed for the well-being of employees and with the utmost respect for the environment. There’s a signature restaurant, symbol of a new philosophy of
A perfect space for our running shooting, where design and architecture meet creating an ideal theater of the play of light that only Turin can offer, reflections and shadows are not lacking, creating strange figures on the asphalt. It's cold, the light is sharp, maybe it is too strong but not as much as the coffee we just drank, a real lifeblood for our souls. The guys are ready, they wear New Balance, Brooks, Gore and Under Armor. Let’s start.

1 . B R O O KS LE VITATE 2 Thanks to this shoe with a silver sole you won’t certainly go unnoticed. We love its design, because it’s strong, decisive and with personality. While running, this Brooks gives you back energy to every of your step thanks to DNA AMP technology, which gives you the feeling of being able to go farther and run faster. All this thanks to a sole that quickly promotes movement from heel to toe and a new highly adaptable upper. It has a 3D fabric that adapts perfectly to the foot and greatly increases the balance between the different components. The support is present where needed and the new collar wraps around the foot in order to make the movement more efficient. All in favor of greater dynamism in the roll. The DNA AMP midsole gives the best on asphalt routes but can also be used on dirt roads. Reactive, dynamic, fast, it amplifies your step, with it you know how you are running and you have fun doing it. The Brooks Levitate 2 are the best: fast and responsive when you decide to push, comfortable and enveloping when the pace becomes more "touristy".
2.NEW BALANCE FRESH FOAM ZANTE In this running shoe, the New Balance designers have enclosed the technology needed to improve your run and its development was based on data collected from professional runners. The Zante has a soft and reactive Fresh Foam midsole with lasercut perforations, plus the soft insole extends with a HypoKnit upper that offers strategic support from the heel to the forefoot. With a drop of 6 mm, a wraparound structure for a customized fit and the Fresh Foam midsole made from a single piece of foam, you'll have a more agile and natural run, which will allow you to run longer and faster. New Balance has worked in particular on the right balance between cushioning and stability, creating a shoe that protects what needed but being reactive at the same time, fast and never uncomfortable or too dry. These are some of the most essential shoes you can run with: lightweight, without special supports and protections, they do not use any artifice or special effect, they are sincere and simple. The more you run, the more you will convince yourself that this is what a running shoe must be like... and they look good on pictures too!
3.UNDER ARMOUR HOVR INFINITE They might look like regular running shoes following the american brand's typical design, but in reality there's a hidden heart of technology. A sensor placed inside the insole of the right shoe studies you and then, when connected to your mobile phone, tells you how, how much and with what cadence you run. It collects the data that are used to study your running style and eventually allows you to correct it with the help of a coach. But Under Armour HOVR Infinite are indeed running shoes in first place. Made for long mileage and to grind more and more road every day. Technically they are very comfortable having a fairly good support. Under Armour has decided to put comfort in first place without giving up on reactivity, ensured by the HOVR insole distributed along the entire length. The shoe has a very linear dynamic behaviour throughout the whole length and it's equally steady in every run. With its 301 grams of weight, an incredibly breathable 3D mash upper and a smart way to adapt to your feet, the sensation is always to be wearing protective but not much constricting shoes, giving you the idea to be reliable over longer mileages. Men’s feet are different from women’s ones, therefore there are two separate models and the female one is two millimiters taller on the ankle and less bulky on the top. What can we say, it is a great shoe of the american brand.

«Two things fill the mind with always new and growing admiration and veneration, the more often and longer the reflection deals with them: the starry sky above me, and the moral law within me.»
It is this epitaph of Immanuel Kant, from the Critique of Practical Reason, that opens a good article by Luca Calzolari entitled "The Ethics of Responsibility”. Exploration is the most important experience that can be done in the mountains or in any other open space. A noble, satisfying act, which must respect certain natural balances and ask some moral questions. We are pushed and influenced by a widespread and aggressive tourism, from an economy that in order to monetize is willing to neglect the environment and the landscape in which we live. Nowadays, more than ever, even the story of your own gesture is considered more important than the world explored. The exploration or the adventure is more and more a function of your own marketing. A passion is no longer such, when it turns into morbid voyeurism. Only by facing your own conscience, it can really become an expression of true exploration.
