The Brief

Board 1

This is a client driven brief to design the a 60th birthday party invitation. The invite must be custom to match the colour scheme of the birthday theme of ivory and silver. there are several requirements in terms of information that needs to be supplied and cost is also a factor that needed to be taken into consideration. Apart from working with the client on copyright they were happy for me to have free creative control.

Research & concept

Board 2

Ever since focussing my dissertation on print I have been really interested in stationers and specifically those who create custom invitations. The only way to create a custom invite is to find out a little bit about the client first. I was lucky to have this opportunity so that my designs are informed by a tought process and concept. After learning about their personality I worked on the concept of a bouquet of flowers designed specifically for them after I researched into different flower meanings. This has then formed the basis for all imagery. The invitations had to be tasteful and work compliment the Ivory and silver colour scheme for the event.

Process

Board 4

I began the process by sending some rough design ideas off to the client. From there I could see what visual styles they liked the best and whether they approved the colour scheme. Working with paunt means thats it’s hard to go back and alter the colours once you have scanned them in without it beign a long and time consuming process. Also, working manually has a charm and character to it which is lost with too much didigtal editing. The flower images were all researched beforehand and drawn from printed pictures.

To keep the hand painted quality ofthe images whilst still being able to edit then easily into layouts I had to scan them in at a high resolution and then neaten off any rough edges in photoshop. This polishing technique seems to work and means that all images are consistent and look neat even if there are different textures on the flowers and type themselves. As this was my first real client job I wanted to make sure that they were as perfect as they could possibly be. This may have been a more time consuming process but created reuslts that both I and the client were happy with. The typeface choice was changed mutliple times until we reached the decision to use ‘Archer’ in it’s varying weights to create a clear hierarchyon some of the pages there was a lot f information in a small area so the typeface needed to be really clear.

These are the final outcomes for the invitations. i am really happy with the final outcome and am also pleased with the feedback I recieved from the client. It was a postive experience working with someone who treats you like a proffessional rather than a student.
