York County Tourism Grant Program - Fueling York County's Tourism Industry

The York County Tourism Grant Program supports initiatives aimed at boosting York County's billion-dollar tourism industry. This program provides funding for projects and events designed to attract visitors from outside a 50-mile radius promoting economic growth through increased overnight hotel stays. So far this year, the Tourism Grant Program has awarded $561,648 to fund 19 projects designed to elevate York County's status as a leading tourist destination. The program reopens on June 1, visit YorkPA. org/grants for more information and to schedule a consultation.

Discover Hanover®, the Chamber's tourism and community brand, received generous funding from the York County Tourism Grant Program in 2024. This enabled Discover Hanover® to undergo a complete rebrand and launch a new website, enhancing its appeal to visitors and promoting Hanover as a premier destination in York County. The Chamber is excited to embark on this new chapter for Discover Hanover® and to witness what benefits the brand will bring to Hanover and York County. To

see the new website, please visit www. DiscoverHanoverPA.org.

Chamber President Sarah Messer said the following: "The Hanover Chamber truly appreciates the York County Tourism Grant program and Explore York for its invaluable support. This program empowers organizations like ours to create and enhance opportunities that drive local tourism and community growth. "

Meet the Board! Jody Shaffer of YWCA Hanover

Tell us about the organization you work for and your role.

YWCA Hanover has been serving our community since 1920. The mission is to Eliminate Racism, Empower Women and promote peace, justice, dignity and justice for all. We serve over 150 families daily with childcare services and day camp for ages 1-12 years old children including and Early Learning Center for all day care and School Age Childcare during the before and after school hours. Our focus is on preparing children for school and supporting families. The Safe Home services for domestic violence and human trafficking survivors operates 24/7 with offices in Hanover and Gettysburg, serving nearly 4,000 clients a year in Adams and York Counties. YWCA Hanover also offers a robust women/girl’s empowerment and DEI (Diversity Equity Inclusion) department with dozens of specialty programs and events throughout the year.

As Chief Executive Officer of YWCA Hanover, it is my privilege to lead our organization which employs over 50 staff members and 100 plus volunteers. The Board of Directors is comprised of engaged, business savvy, working board members which provides mission advancement, fiscal oversight and management, policy creation, and public relations along with the CEO.

What motivated you to become a member of the Board of Directors for the Hanover Area Chamber of Commerce?

I have witnessed the growth of Downtown Hanover firsthand since 2014 at YWCA Hanover. My decision to join the Hanover Chamber Board was to offer insights to continue propelling the growth of Downtown Hanover and the entire business community. As a nonprofit leader, I am also motivated to provide resources to the Chamber and develop partnerships with my colleagues on the Board of Directors that will directly or indirectly improve our community.

What value do you think the Hanover Area Chamber of Commerce brings to the community and the local economy?

Connecting people within the business community to expand knowledge and potential partnerships. Raising awareness of all that Hanover has to offer businesses, families, and corporations.

What do you feel is the most impactful aspect of serving on a board for a non-profit organization?

Every board member brings unique skill sets, experience, and knowledge to the collective effort of the organization. Offering these resources to a nonprofit organization is invaluable.

What do you enjoy about Hanover as a community?

Hanover offers a pleasant, safe living space with many robust and diverse businesses and manufacturers. I Like that neighborhoods are microcosms of our community, families knowing families for generations, and that we are a phone call away from reaching out for assistance from loyal friends, neighbors, and family for anything.

List three (or more) of your favorite things to do in the Hanover area.

I enjoy and utilize Codorus State Park as well as our local Hanover Rail Trail for recreation. I like the restaurants and craft breweries that offer many great places to socialize with friends. However, living near my family is most important; I like that we live close to one another in and around Hanover.

Schools In The Community Prepare Our Youth for the Workforce

During the week of May 6th to the 10th, the nation celebrated its first ever National Youth Apprenticeship Week. National Youth Apprenticeship week is an offshoot from National Apprenticeship Week and highlights individuals participating in Registered Apprenticeship programs throughout the country.

The Chamber reached out to the local schools regarding what programs, apprenticeships, and internships they offer and participate in with their students. We received a wealth of information regarding what the students are doing and it shined light on just how much the schools are investing in the future talent of our community. Furthermore, several students provided their own insight into the apprenticeship programs and internships they are involved with.

OVER 70 HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS GRADUATE MANUFACTURERS’ ASSOCIATION

PRE-APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM

(York, PA) – The Manufacturers’ Association concluded its 7th program year recently for their high school Pre-Apprenticeship program with a graduation ceremony hosted at Penn State York’s campus during

National Youth Apprenticeship Week. The Association’s Pre-Apprenticeship program introduces high school students to advanced manufacturing occupations in seven different trades

and provides opportunities to pursue high wage in demand careers. The program includes students from York, Lancaster, Perry, Chester, Dauphin, Cumberland, and Lebanon Counties including the Milton Hershey School as well as the County Career and Tech High Schools.

This year’s Pre-Apprenticeship program graduated 70 students from across southcentral Pennsylvania. The recognition event included students receiving their state recognized PreApprenticeship credential witnessed by invited guests, family members, program partners and Association employers. The program also included awarding the annual Carl Winters Jr. Memorial Scholarship which provides $1,000 in funds for further education or training in an industrial career. This year’s awardee is Cristian Saylor from Red

Land High School in the West Shore School District. Christian plans to pursue a career in mechatronics at Harrisburg Area Community College. The Scholarship was established in honor of Carl Winters, Jr. after his passing. Carl was a tool and die maker by trade for over 50 years in the York area and the creator of the original pre apprenticeship program at the Association.

“Pre-Apprenticeships offer an excellent opportunity to introduce high-tech modern manufacturing careers to all students” said Miranda Martz, the program’s Pre-Apprenticeship Coordinator at the Association. “The program also provides a pathway for advance placement in employer apprenticeships - accelerating high wage, high quality careers for graduates,” she stated.

9 BUSINESS BRIEFS

Pre-apprenticeship programs are designed to offer classroom and hands-on learning specifically to train students to enter a registered apprenticeship program with an employer or continue their technical education. The Association’s program started in 2017 with a handful of students and since then has enrolled over 300 students across south central Pennsylvania in the skills program. Students receive several industry recognized credentials and upon graduation have the opportunity to enter full registered apprenticeships with sponsoring employers while benefiting from advanced placement the pre-apprenticeship provides for graduates of the program.

The program is registered with the PA Department of Labor (L&I) and has received support from the state agency to expand the program across south central Pennsylvania. L&I estimates that on average, apprentices earn much higher starting wages after completion of programs and are on track to earn $300,000 more than those production workers without journey worker credentials over their careers. For every dollar spent on apprenticeships, employers get an average of $1.47 back in increased productivity. In addition to the PA Department of Labor the program also partners with the Partnership for Career Development, York County Alliance for Learning, Chester County Intermediate Unit, Lancaster County Workforce Development Board, and dozens of employers.

HANOVER HIGH SCHOOL ENTERS SECOND YEAR OF PARTNERSHIP WITH YORK COLLEGE

During the 2022-2023 school year and starting with the Class of 2023, Hanover High School (HHS) entered

into a partnership with York College of Pennsylvania (YCP).

Both HHS and YCP recognized the need to enhance access to private post-secondary education within the region and that belief served as the focal point of our partnership. In order to strengthen the relationship between our two institutions, both parties entered into a College Admission Agreement as a way to increase enrollment and work on behalf of high-achieving students. YCP will provide guaranteed admission to any HHS graduate (starting with the Class of 2023) in good academic standing with a minimum unweighted GPA of a 3.0. This scholarship will amount to a minimum of $10,000 a year and a minimum of $40,000 over four years for HHS students.

We are so grateful for this partnership with YCP and we look forward to continuing to watch this partnership blossom for years to come.
