EVENTS
Page 11
THANK YOU WORKFORCE SPONSORS
After 19 months of collaboration between the Hanover Area Chamber of Commerce, Hanover Auto Team, and the Pennsylvania Apprenticeship Training Office, we are pleased to announce that "Automotive Technician Specialist" is the first of its kind as a Registered Apprenticeship in Pennsylvania. The formal apprenticeship designation not only underscores the significance of the automotive technician role but also signals a commitment to fostering excellence and professionalism within the auto industry.
Led by Loni Smith, CEO at Hanover Auto Team, and Frank Fuhrman, Manager, Training & Talent Development, the program addresses the shortage of skilled technicians in the auto industry. Integrating coursework into high school curricula and offering a year-long apprenticeship for adults, we provide participants with ASE certification and valuable skills for successful careers.
Chamber President Sarah Messer said, "The Chamber could not be prouder to be the program sponsor for this apprenticeship. Hanover Auto Team has set the standard for the PA auto industry's workforce development. Their overwhelming dedication to developing and providing high-quality training opportunities underscores the Hanover community's commitment to shaping our workforce. We are grateful for Loni and Frank's dedication to providing
this exceptional opportunity in our community."
Loni offered the following, “The Tech Pathways program is the manifestation of our vision statement and the value we place on relationships with our community, which states 'We strive to promote strong, enduring relationships among all of our associates, and with customers, vendors, and the community. As we sustain and strengthen these relationships, we change the image of how a business operates, and of what a company can be'.”
Senator Kristin Phillips-Hill, PA 28th District, also provided a quote regarding the successful approval of the Tech Pathways program, “The innovative approach spearheaded by the Hanover Area Chamber of Commerce serves as a model that could be used across the state to address our workforce challenges and our skilled labor shortage. I am pleased to see the Department of Labor and Industry approve of this groundbreaking program that will change lives and make a positive impact for the entire community.”
Congratulations to Hanover Auto Team for receiving state recognition and enhancing our workforce and the Hanover community.
Thank you to Hanover Auto Team's Marketing Director, Kelly Rebert, for her contribution to this article.

Meet The Board! Jeremy Frey of Barley Snyder
Meet Board member and Vice Chair, Jeremy Frey of Barley Snyder who has served with us for many years!
Tell us a little bit about the organization you work for and your role within the organization.
"I am a partner at Barley Snyder law firm based in Pennsylvania with more than 130 attorneys practicing in offices located throughout south-central and south eastern Pennsylvania and parts of Maryland. The firm serves businesses, individuals, and organizations in all major areas of civil law."
What motivated you to become a member of the Board of Directors for the Hanover Area Chamber of Commerce?
"Former Chamber chair, Mark Riggs presented the idea as an opportunity to be more involved in the business community in a great organization that benefits our community. I had a lot of respect for Gary Laird and wanted to work with him and get involved in the Hanover business community."
What value do you think the Hanover Area Chamber of Commerce brings to the community and the local economy?
"The Chamber connects people in the Hanover community and advocates for its members by connecting them with local legislators who can help address the needs of the business community and giving exposure to member organizations."
What do you feel is the most impactful aspect of serving on a board for a non-profit organization?
"The best part of being on the board is meeting new people and forming new relationships. Serving on the board has introduced me to people from other companies and their leadership styles and ideas. I always enjoy learning from and sharing ideas that help us all be successful."
What do you enjoy about Hanover as a community?
Hanover provides lots of opportunities in a small town setting. There are amazing businesses in this town created by entrepreneurs like my friends, Paige Wingert at L2 Brands and Frank Lecrone at AquaPhoenix to name a
few. Our many businesses provide the opportunity to earn a good living in a town that is a great place to raise a family. The downtown area has really come alive and has some great pubs and restaurants for everyone. The public schools in the area also provide great opportunities to their students like preparing my daughter, Kaitlyn, for University of Michigan where she is majoring in Biomedical Engineering. And Hanover Public High School, where my wife Angie teaches, also provides training for students who wish to enter the workforce after high school. The Chamber has helped create some excellent partnerships between local schools and local employers.
List three (or more) of your favorite things to do in the Hanover area.
As a Littlestown native and someone who has spent a large part of their life in the Hanover area, I think back to the North Hanover Mall, Magic Elm and the movie theatre. But now we really enjoy getting out to local restaurants (such as Altland House, Taphouse 6, Oak), playing golf, supporting youth and high school sports, and enjoying spending time with our friends and family in the great town of Hanover."
Thank you, Jeremy, for serving on our board!

PLANNERS SEEK PUBLIC INPUT ON FUTURE OF CROSS KEYS CORRIDOR
The Adams County Transportation Planning Organization (ACTPO) in partnership with PennDOT and local municipalities, has launched an online survey to gather public comment as it advances its work on a study of the PA 94 corridor. The study area includes State Route 94 between Dicks Dam Road and Hanover Street. It also includes a portion of US Route 30 between Lincoln Street and Stanley Drive.
ACTPO initiated the traffic and transportation study in response to concerns expressed by officials from Berwick, Hamilton, and Oxford Townships, citing safety concerns and potential impacts of future development. The study will establish a framework for improving
traffic operations and safety for all modes as well as addressing land use and economic development impacts. An action plan will include recommendations that may include further planning efforts at the regional and local level, coordination with stakeholders, and operational or physical improvements.
Area residents and travelers are invited to take the online survey, which is available at: https://arcg. is/1Lmvjj. The survey allows participants to describe their experiences traveling through study area, offer feedback on potential transportation solutions, and identify areas of concern through an interactive map. The survey and interactive map will be active through May 13.
of areas along the corridor in need of further evaluation or improvement,” said Andrew Merkel, Assistant Director at the Adams County Office of Planning and Development. “The feedback we gather from the survey will inform the next phases of the study process. By working together to define these areas of need, we can begin defining short- and longterm strategies that the community is supportive of that will ultimately enhance safety and mobility for all who use the corridor.”
The study process is being guided by a steering committee consisting of representatives from area municipalities as well as the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT). ACTPO officials anticipate having a final

UPMC HANOVER EARNS KEYSTONE 10 DESIGNATION FOR BREASTFEEDING INITIATIVES
HANOVER, Pa., UPMC Hanover has recently been designated as a Keystone 10 facility, for implementing evidencebased maternity care practices to help improve breastfeeding care and rates, as well as improving the health of new mothers and babies.
Keystone 10, administered by the Pa. Department of Health and the Pa. Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, is a quality improvement breastfeeding initiative that began in 2014. It is aimed at improving the protection, promotion and support of breastfeeding for all Pennsylvania infants, mothers and families.
“Breastfeeding is important for both the mother's and baby's health,” said Amy Hursh, unit director, Maternity and Pediatrics, UPMC Hanover. “Our primary responsibility is to equip new mothers with all the necessary information to make informed decisions about feeding their baby. For the past eight years, every member of our maternity and pediatrics team has been dedicated to improving their knowledge and skills in this area. We strive to provide new moms and babies with the necessary resources to ensure a successful breastfeeding experience.”
According to Keystone 10, the World Health Organization has identified ten research-based facility practices that, when implemented, impact breastfeeding exclusivity and duration and are key to improving health outcomes for mothers and babies. Among these practices are providing education to new mothers, allowing them to stay with their new infants by “rooming in” and establishing breastfeeding support groups. Research has shown that babies born at hospitals that complete at least six steps are 13 times more likely to be breastfeeding at three months as compared to other hospitals.
“It’s an honor to receive this designation,” said Michael W. Gaskins, president, UPMC Hanover. “This is another way we’re bolstering our UPMC Magee-Womens Health services in Hanover. This Keystone 10 designation further highlights the high-quality comprehensive care we provide to our community members.”
