World routes is the biggest global networking forum focused entirely on aviation route development and the annual routes Marketing Awards are widely regarded as the most prestigious awards in the industry, a highly sought after distinction within the air service development community. All airports’ marketing plans and programmes are evaluated by the airlines, which reward those that most efficiently address their own efforts to develop new routes while also enhancing their presence in the local markets. the 22nd World route development Forum was held in Chengdu, China, with the participation of 3,500 aviation professionals from 300 airlines and 700 airports worldwide. there, the Athens International Airport was proclaimed the winner in the 4-20 million passengers category. “I would like to warmly thank the airlines for their trust in our airport and our market and their votes that brought us once again to the top,” noted Ioanna Papadopoulou, AIA’s Communications and Marketing director. “As our passenger traffic maintains a positive track in the first 8 months of the year 2016, we continue to offer innovative and integrated airport marketing programmes consistently and in close collaboration with our airline partners, while, at the same time, systematically promote our destination, the city of Athens. our campaign this year, under the slogan ‘Aviation Marketing delivered in a Novel way’, reflects our willingness and efforts to look proactively into the actual needs of each and every one of our airline partners, design and implement our marketing strategy accordingly, and, consequently, provide them with innovative and highly supportive tools and marketing programmes. through this approach we believe that we strongly and efficiently support our airline partners in their developmental plans and operations in our market, thus contributing, at the same time, to the promotion of Athens as one of the top travel destinations internationally.” It is noteworthy that the Athens International Airport is the most awarded airport, with 16 routes distinctions in 12 years.

With the opening of the Silversmithing Museum in ioannina, the piraeus Bank group Cultural Foundation (piop) has completed the network of nine thematic Museums throughout greece. it is an ambitious project that preserves and promotes the country’s historical legacy, but also contributes to the support and tourism boost of the region. the Silversmithing Museum is housed in the castle of ioannina, an imposing Byzantine monument dating from the 6th century A.D. For the requirements of its permanent exhibition, piop reformed two levels of the western bastion of the southeastern acropolis (its Kale) as well as the adjacent building of the old cookhouse. the Silversmithing Museum documents the silversmith craft technology during the pre-industrial period focusing on the history of silversmithing in epirus, from the postByzantine period of the 15th century onwards, having also some references to earlier times. At the entrance the sound of the hammer as it works to ply a silver object mentally travels the visitor to the silversmith workshop. As the themes of the exhibition unfold, the distinctive silver oil lamp “illuminates” answers to questions such as: When and where? What material? how? Who was it for? Made by whom? With the help of various presentation means the visitor discovers the traditional techniques of shaping and decorating silver objects and all the stages involved in the creation of the final product. on the second level of the bastion are typical 18th to 20th century silversmith artifacts from epirus including jewelry, household silverware, personal effects, arms and martial gear. the Museum also has articles of contemporary silversmithing with works by craftsmen from the wider region who continue the centuries-old tradition, as well as a variety of educational and cultural activities. * www.piop.gr ELEGANT TRAVEL

WHEN CÉSAR RITZ went on to create a hotel in Paris at the end of the 19th century, he wanted it to display “all the refinements that a Prince might hope to find in his own private residence”; and when the current owner, Mohamed Al-Fayed decided it was time for a renovation, he made sure the soul of this venerable shrine of hospitality was left intact. After a meticulous 4-year renovation, the Ritz Paris is more dazzling than ever, its past lovingly integrated into the future. The latest technology is now discreetly present everywhere, including the historic Prestige Suites dedicated to certain of the hotel’s most illustrious guests: Gabrielle Chanel, Marcel Proust, F. very king has whims; so did Zeus, when he first sat on the throne of Olympus and called on the other gods and asked them a simple question: at which point exactly was the centre of his kingdom? Those present exchanged puzzled glances. No one could answer with certainty. Then Zeus resorted to… science: he ordered two eagles to fly at the same speed to the two ends of the universe. The birds flew for days over land and sea until they eventually met and stood there fluttering, awaiting for Zeus to mark the spot. The mark was a large stone that was dropped onto the earth: “Now we know where the earth’s omphalos is”, said the king of the gods and returned to reign in his palace. In Greek, the word omphalos means “navel”.
The arrival of Apollo
Zeus’ stone had landed on the southern slopes of Mount Parnassus, a place of wild beauty, regarded as sacred ever since the creation of the world. There, under the imposing Phaedriades Stones hid Python, the giant serpent with a hundred heads that was born out of the womb of Mother Earth. His mother had entrusted him with an important task: to guard the sacred springs and the mystical vapours that had the ability to bring prophetic visions to people. For millennia, Python performed his duties devoutly. One day, a dolphin came to the nearest coast, followed by a boat full of priests. Before long, the dolphin was transformed into Apollo, the young god of light, who had come to become the master of this sacred place. Python resisted vigorously, but was eventually defeated and killed. Apollo’s priests settled in the area and erected the first temple – a plain hut made of laurel branches. They later rebuilt it using bees wax and feathers, while the third material used was bronze. Eventually the legendary architects Trophonius and Agamedes – with the help of the god himself – rebuilt it in stone.
The golden era
The myth of Apollo fighting Python reflects a true fact: the shift from the ancient worshiping of Mother Earth to that of the Olympian gods. With regards to Delphi, the transition occurred around the 8th century B.C. That is when the most famous oracle of Greece officially passed into the hands of the god of light. The past, however, was not erased, since the new worshiping incorporated the mystical elements of the old. It is indicative that Apollo acquired the epithet “Pythios” and that the main priestess maintained the name Pythia, in honour of the deceased guardian of the oracle. In the years that followed, Delphi became the most important religious centre of

Greece. Apart from common people who visited, there were formal envoys from the city-states seeking to find out if a political decision or a campaign would have a positive outcome. The priests had enormous power, as they could influence political developments with their oracles. The riches gathered from the offerings were enormous. In fact, various city-states made small temples called Treasuries, in which they kept the precious gifts. It was an act of respect towards the oracle, but also a reminder of the power that each city wielded.
An ancient star
Pythia, the main priestess of the oracle, was one of the most famous figures in ancient Greece – a real star, as we would say today. She came from an aristocratic family of Delphi and would always wear the clothes of a young woman, regardless of her age. In the beginning, she would only give oracles once a year, on the anniversary of Apollo’s birth. During prosperous years, prophesying was almost daily and there were two or more Pythias performing their duties in shifts. The process was strictly defined. The visitor had to be cleansed in the Castalian spring, pay the mandatory tax and offer a sacrifice. Thereupon, he was allowed to enter the temple. In the sanctuary was the golden statue of the god Apollo and the sacred tripod upon which Pythia sat. The fortune teller drank the water flowing from the omphalos stone – the stone of Zeus. Once she had chewed laurel leaves and had fallen into a trance, the visitor would have to ask a clearly worded question relating to a specific future event. Pythia’s answer, on the other hand, was vague, delirious and ambiguous. Therefore, translators or prophets undertook the task of interpreting and writing down the answer.
Games and Hymns
Apart from being a religious and cultural centre, Delphi was also a symbol of unity for the Greeks and the seat of the largest Amphictyony (a confederation that one could liken to a micrograph of today’s United Nations). That was where the Pythian Games were held, which were the second most important games in ancient Greece after the Olympics. According to legend, the initiator was Apollo himself, who thus commemorated his victory over 到政治的发展。

Python. The Pythian Games were held every four years, in the third year of each Olympiad. Most sporting events were held in the Delphi stadium, whereas horse and chariot races took place in the Krissaio Field, beneath the slopes of Mount Parnassus. The most important event of the Games were the musical contests. Valuable information about them has come from two Delphic hymns dating to the 2nd century B.C., which were engraved on the marble of the Athenians Treasure. The singer Athenaeus and the musician Limenios are credited as their creators. More importantly, there are musical symbols found between the verses, which were interpreted by musicologists, so that we have an adequately clear picture of ancient Greek music.
The last oracle
History had in store a great glory, but also countless turmoils for Delphi. The first stone church was destroyed by fire in 548 B.C. It was rebuilt and remained intact until 372 B.C., when it was flattened by a mighty earthquake. Greek cities collected contributions and, in 330 B.C., a brand new church was erected beneath the Phaedriades Stones, in the exact design and dimensions of the old. Major damage was also caused by numerous invaders, who would arrive in droves, enticed by the mythical treasures. When the Romans conquered Greece, they showed respect and protected this sacred precinct – with the exception of Nero, who ordered the removal and transportation of more than five hundred statues to Rome. With the advent of Christianity, the oracle waned and

was stripped of its treasures. The rise of pagan emperor Julian to the throne came as a brief respite; however, Pythia was under no illusions. Her last oracle to Julian is indicative: “Tell the emperor that the Daidalic hall has fallen. No longer does Apollo have his chamber, nor mantic laurel, nor prophetic spring; the speaking water has been silenced.” Indeed, in 381 A.D. the emperor Theodosius prohibits the operation of the oracle and Pythia is silenced forever.
Back in the limelight
In the 19th century, the landscape at Delphi was very different, compared to ancient times. Where once there stood the splendid monuments, now was a humble village. The stones and marbles from the ruined ancient buildings were used for the construction of dwellings, while the large bulk of the sanctuary was underground. Archaeologists were obviously aware of the site’s significance, and in 1860 the Greek government decided to transfer the village elsewhere in order to start excavating. The locals reacted and refused to leave. Then, as if the ancient gods intervened, an earthquake caused extensive damage to the houses, so the locals finally agreed to move one kilometre to the south. The excavations began and slowly the hidden splendour of ancient Delphi resurfaced. Today, on the majestically beautiful slopes of Parnassus, it is one of the most famous archaeological sites on Earth, regarded as one of the World’s Heritage Sites by UNESCO. Visitors arriving here

w w w. shutterstock.com

They can also admire the temples, the stadium, the theatre, the rich museum exhibits and predominantly feel the sacredness and long-standing energy that the region exudes. The gold offerings that once glittered under the Greek sky have now been lost, but the Castalia spring still flows, hoping that maybe someday we will be able to hear it and understand what it whispers.
The main sites The temple of Apollo
This is the most recent temple, completed in 330 B.C. It is a magnificent example of the Doric order, with six of its columns on the front and rear elevations and fifteen on the side elevations. At the deepest level was the sanctuary where the divination ritual unfolded.
Tholos (sanctuary) of Athena Pronea
It is perhaps the most characteristic monument of Delphi, situated in the temple of Athena. The impressive circular building dates to 380 B.C. and comprises almost all architectural styles of classical antiquity. It has been partially restored.
Treasury of the Athenians
In this small Doric order building trophies of battles were kept, as well as items dedicated to the sanctuary by the Athenians. It was built in the early 5th century B.C. The frieze depicts the labours of Hercules and Theseus. The building has been totally restored.

The first one was constructed around 600 B.C., and the most recent one in the 1st century B.C. The latter is dug into the rock, slightly above Apollo’s temple, where there are indentations for the offerings of the faithful.
This is where the Pythian music contests were hosted. Originally it was wooden and later, in the 4th century B.C., it was built out of stone. Numerous repairs followed and it acquired its present form, with the stone-paved orchestra and cobbled stone seats, in the early Roman period in 160 B.C.

One of the best preserved ancient stadiums. The initial structure dates back to the 5th century B.C., with its running track having the same length as a Roman stadium (177.55 metres). The starting and finishing lines are still visible. During the Pythian Games, the stadium could seat more than five thousand spectators.
Its permanent exhibitions give us a clear picture of the entire history of Delphi, from the early years until the abandonment of the oracle. Highlights among the exhibits are the impressive archaic kouros, the sculptures and reliefs from the temple friezes, the famous bronze statue of the Charioteer and, of course, the hub of stone that stood in the sanctuary of the oracle – the Omphalos of Delphi.

s soon as one leaves Delphi and descends the lush slopes of Parnassus, it is like looking at two seas. The first one, green and fragrant, is the sea of… olive trees: the olive grove of Amfissa, which appears to wave gently to the gusts of wind. The other one is the actual sea, which is the Gulf of Corinth sometimes calm and other times rough, as it showers the lacy coasts of Fokida. Nestled between two sheltered bays, lies a small picturesque town, whose name was once renowned throughout all the Mediterranean ports and beyond. It is now a tourist destination and very popular with travellers seeking aesthetic qualities, serenity and an unpretentious simplicity. A nostalgic atmosphere The beauty of Galaxidi is revealed to the visitor as soon as he strolls through the narrow alleys between the stone houses that are perched tightly embracing the small central hill. It becomes even more evident as one approaches the beach, where the neoclassical mansions and captains’ houses stand proudly, being a testimonial to the past, yet still having a vibrant prestige. Everything here seems as if it has remained in the 19th century, the period when the countless sailing ships from Galaxidi sailed the seas, carrying goods and bringing people and cultures together. Back in those days, women would mend the sails in their distinctive lounges of their home, while the church bells would constantly ring in order to welcome or bid farewell to the ships coming and going from the two natural harbours of Agora and Chirolaka. By the early 20th century, sailboat seafaring had declined as steamboats dominated the seas. The sentimental inhabitants of Galaxidi did not adapt to the new age and the town stopped being a maritime hub. The town’s character however, remained unspoiled thanks to its descendants’ love for tradition and their willingness to have a slight tourist development. Museums & attractions Following the route of one of the narrow pathways that starts from the beach, we shortly arrive at the Maritime Museum. We are welcomed there by the folklorist Rodoula Stathaki-Koumari, who despite her 92 years of age tirelessly continues working as a scientific adviser. “It is the first Maritime Museum in Greece,” she says. “Founded in 1928, it has accumulated relics from 1830 to the early 20th century found in the homes of this maritime town, during the time of the last naval and commercial prosperity. They are primarily paintings of sailboats from Galaxidi, nautical and maritime instruments, ship parts, figureheads, logbooks and more; also in the collection are arms from the Greek War of Independence.” One can also see there the exhibits that cover the entire history of the region, from the Bronze Age to modern times. The most outstanding archaeological finding is an amphora dating back to the Helladic period (3rd millennium B.C.). In antiquity the town was called Haleion. The name Galaxidi makes its first appearance in medieval times. We have plenty of information from this dark period from another important museum exhibit: the “Chronicle of Galaxidi” which is a manuscript of the postByzantine era that recounts the battles, raids, disasters and the constant renewal of this maritime town. Its author, the monk Efthimios, lived his entire life in the Moni Sotiros monastery,

which is easily accessible being just four kilometres from Galaxidi. Apart from this building, dating to 1250, visitors can also admire the very old icons and the typical illustrations of Byzantine art that are displayed here. Also notable is the Folklore Museum housed in one of the oldest houses of Galaxidi that was used as a Naval Secondary School. Included in its collection are authentic traditional costumes and embroideries, made by the women during their endless hours of solitude when the male population was away at sea. As we carry on the walk around the town, going among the stone houses and courtyards with the bright red bougainvillea plants, we reach the church of Agios Nikolaos. It is built on top of an ancient temple, possibly Apollo’s, and hides inside an impressive walnut altarpiece, created by a folk craftsman. Next to the large church is the oldest chapel of Agia Paraskevi, renowned for its sundial as well as the ornate tiled flooring with depictions of the zodiac. If we want an idea of what life was like in the old mansions of Galaxidi, we can visit the Spitaki apartments. Located in the heart of the town, the main building was built in 1850, as we are told by the owner Stella Senduka. She is the descendant of one of the many local naval families and she has renovated the house with great accuracy. It has four rooms in total and inside them we find many original furnishings

Another attraction is the Parthenagogio (Girls’ School), a neoclassical building constructed in 1880, which functioned as a school for girls up to 1929. Very close to the beach of Agora, is the pine grove of Pera Panta and a monument dedicated to the seafarer women. Further on we find the old windmill, a typical example of preindustrial folk architecture. One can even take a boat ride and visit the two small nearby islands. One is Apsifia, with a lighthouse built in 1887 and the other is Ai Giorgis, a favourite lovers’ spot, where a rare species of hyacinth grows (narcissus tazetta). Local mores and customs Any season is a good time for one to visit Galaxidi. In order to witness a truly unusual experience though, one would have to go there on Kathara Deftera (Clean Monday, which falls on the 27th of February in 2017). That is when the whole coastal road becomes a remarkably entertaining battlefield. It is the so-called Alevromoutzouroma (Flour battle) where the participants wear special masks and protective clothing and throw flour and lampblack at each other. Tourists are not spared from the “crossfire” unless they stand in the designated “green zone” of Pera Pantas. The origins of this custom date back to the Middle Ages. In the years of maritime prosperity it also served as a farewell celebration for sailors leaving on their long journeys at the end of winter. Easter time celebrations have a different hue; whereas a very intriguing gastronomic event is organized every year in early May. This is the celebration of the Roumeliotiki Kouzina (cuisine of Roumeli), where cooks and chefs from the local Tourism Education Faculty prepare and offer guests genuine delicacies from Central Greece. Summer visitors, on the other hand, can go swimming to the two small beaches of Skoules and Kentri as well as the larger Kalafati (just one kilometre from the town) and also experience two large festivals: the Profitis Ilias festival on the 19th of July and the festival of Sotira, held in the monastery of the same name, on the 5th of August. Flavours & products The most well-known delicacy of Galaxidi is ravani: a dessert that is easily prepared with just four ingredients (water, rice, sugar and oil), which has a rich flavour and dense texture that will remain unforgettable. Because of its durability, it was the favourite dessert of sailors and was loaded in large quantities onto the ships. We can now relish it in one of the city’s cafes and pastry shops, along with almond sweets, spoon sweets, marmalades and walnut pie. In the town’s taverns we find fresh fish and seafood, meat dishes, such as the famous Roumeli kontosouvli and the local kelemia (minced meat and rice wrapped in a thin sheet of onion). On departure, we can buy top quality local products: oil, olives, cheese from Parnassus, traditional rusks, tsipouro (Pomace brandy), honey and sweets.

ithout a doubt, the name “Athens” is historically linked with philosophy and the theatre; however, more inextricably linked to the name “Athens” is another concept that not only incorporates these two creations of the free spirit, but surpasses them: democracy. Today, as the remnants of the ancient Athenian democracy are threatened of being buried beneath the ruins of our contemporary decaying democracy, it might make some sense to retrace to the beginning of that remarkable revolutionary vision in an attempt to reclaim its valuable concepts. In my latest book “Hovering Greece” (in Greek by Papazisis publications), I encourage the readers to do just that: take a conscious tour in present day Athens –which is also ancient– and on the spot look back at the legacy and challenges of a democracy that was born and flourished in this city; a route that takes us pondering from the hills of the Nymphs, the Muses and the Pnyx, to the heart of the Ancient Agora, the Prison of Socrates, the Cemetery of Kerameikos, the Garden of Epicurus, the Academy of Plato, Aristotle’s Lyceum

and the Roman Forum, in order to end up in Syntagma Square at the most vibrant streets of contemporary Athens.
The Pnyx Hill
Moving amongst the pine, carob and olive trees, suddenly at an opening emerges the most compelling view of the Acropolis. Frontal, extraordinary and luminous, it is raised above a forest that thrusts it towards the sky. This is where we find a place that the ancient Athenians called “the Stones”, an elevated plateau used for popular assemblies possibly since the very beginnings of Athens’ history. Today it is an area almost always empty, an uncanny oasis of wind and rock that resembles a crater on the top of the city. This was the meeting area of the Athenian “Ekklesia” (Assembly), of all the citizens who had the right to speech and to vote. If there is a precise birthplace of democracy then it is here, on the Stones of the Pnyx. The cavea that welcomed the crowd reached all the way up to a

row of cypress trees, that now grow on the gigantic stone blocks of the retaining wall, that was constructed in order to steer the semicircular cavea towards the podium. All of this was an extension of a previous cavea that would likewise face the city, dating back to the time of the Thirty Tyrants. Prior to that though, during the time of Themistocles and Pericles, the people sat on the hillside overlooking Athens, just like they do today. The podium was a rock placed just a few metres further down, surrounded by a few wooden benches for the rectors. The rest would probably bring a cushion, a seat or just sit on the ground, on that same stone that retained heat, just like it does today. The orator would address his fellow citizens from a close range, facing the trees and sky above them. The people would be facing towards their houses and crop fields, having Mount Parnes to their left, the hill of Hymettus to their right and directly across they would see Pentele, Lycabettus, Areopagus and the Acropolis; from afar they would hear the sound of the wind and cicadas. All is still here, but it is only as if the people have disappeared. Nicias said it clearly: “You shall restore the weakened strength of the city. For a city consists in men, and not in walls nor in ships empty of men.” That was when the Athenians gathered there, invented something unprecedented: the concept of citizenship. It is certain that until then man had never been a citizen. Throughout the world, there were cultures of ad personam power, cultures where power was concentrated in the hands of a king-god, or divided between members of a certain caste, but no civic cultures. Political consciousness was born here by those people who, for the first time, recognized each other as a partaker of an “ἀόριστος ἀρχῆ”; an “undefined authority” that stems from the political nature of society itself, essential to its members as a whole; where each member becomes a legitimate and active participant whenever he addresses the Assembly or the courts. Thus, with this conscious agreement, democracy was born. However, conventional historiography is keen to restate that it was the victories over the Persians and the ensuing financial and moral impulses that paved the way for the emergence of democracy. How oversimplified! We all well know that throughout the world many victories generated affluence and exuberance, but none of them created anything comparable. Democracy emerged from the soul of the Greeks, who, through Homer’s and Hesiod’s words, had appreciated that the life of every human being is unique and more valuable than any treasure or ambition. It emerged from the thirst to defend what is inherent in man, the ceaseless search for universal values and a conviction that the notion of justice and the force of free will are innate in all human beings. Democracy emerged from the tangible quest of something unprecedented; it emerged from a strenuous process of awareness, reconciliation and abnegation, well before and despite of the victories over the Persians. This achievement was monumental: never before did the opinion of the common man have such political weight as the opinion of those who assembled here in this very plateau. This experience –with all the flaws it may be attributed with– gave that society a sense of freedom, justice, equality, responsibility and of participation in defining and defending the common interest; these were unknown concepts until then and sadly in the times that ensued. Thus, when seen from the height of this rock, democracy seems just as solid and resembles the Acropolis that stands proud like an idea that does not fear time.

f there has been some criticism, it is that the architecture of the SNFCC distinctively lacks Greek elements. “The characteristic of the Renzo Piano Building Workshop is to design buildings specifically for the site where they are,” says Bianchi. “Everybody has the right to make criticism, but I don’t think you can take this building and put it in the middle of Manhattan or in the middle of London.” Could it be that people expected more obvious references to ancient Greek symbols? I wonder. “Then maybe they didn’t look carefully at what we have done. They didn’t observe, for example, that the floors inside the building are covered with Pentelikon marble, which is the type used for the Parthenon. Or that the vegetation in the park respects in totality the Mediterranean vegetation and in particular what you find in Greece.” For the latter, the landscape design firm of Deborah Nevins & Associates, based in NYC, collaborated with Athens based Helli Pangalou and Associates landscape architects. Which is Bianchi’s favourite spot? “I don’t know,” he says initially, but then adds: “To be in the park and look at nature and smell the flowers that surround you and listen to the birds twittering!”

The much-vaunted Hollywood star is not the only reason for someone to enjoy a Friday or Saturday night there: the venue is impressive (with elements of an abandoned factory intertwined with gold and copper baroquelike features), while the mainstream EDM and R&B music bursts out loud from a sophisticated sound system. DELI & EATERY
ergon athens
You can now experience in the centre of Athens this conceptual Greek deli & cuisine that started off in Thessaloniki and rapidly spread throughout the country and beyond like an ambassador of the Greek cuisine from London to Miami. Traditional Greek food culture is sort of a trademark here, which combines appetizers (tzatziki, fish roe salad, fava, fried squid) and meat or fish. Displayed on the shelves you will find select products from Greek producers, an ideal memento to take with you leaving as an aftertaste of Greece. * Mitropoleos 26, tel. 2103315547, www.ergonfoods.com - Metro: Syntagma / Monastiraki

TAkE A coLouRfuL sTRoLL ThRouGh ThE ciTy’s cENTRAL MARkET When entering the covered municipal market, that has been here for 130 years at the number 42 of the bustling street of Athinas, awaiting you are the hardcore aromas, the intermingling voices, the trolleys and carry bags! the whole of Athens has filled a shopping basket at the Varvakios market, the city’s belly, built by royal decree and stylistically influenced by similar european buildings of the era. it first opened its gates in 1886 and was renovated between 1979 and 1996 by the Municipality of Athens. On the one side, where the floor gets slippery from the melting ice, fishmongers at their stalls display all sorts of sea goodies from shrimps, oysters, crawfish and crabs, to mullets, sardines, sargo breams and sea breams. On the other side, you will hear butchers touting their goods in front of meat hooks from which hang an array of calves, goats and roosters, and see the fridges filled with pork bellies, hooves and livers. Being a vegetarian you might experience a slight cultural shock, otherwise if you are in the mood for a little endevour in flavours, then visit one of the market’s restaurants – there are not many left – and try the tripe soup, a dish that would traditionally invigorate the greek popular masses and the city’s all-nighters. On the opposite sidewalk of the street of Athinas you will find an abundance of fruit and vegetable crates, olives, salted fish and eggs, while the neighbouring streets carry on with the daily routine of providing for the popular needs of the city’s centre; a place that blends the old-fashioned window panes with the more recent buildings that have graffiti on their roller shutters, the shops for stationery or cleaning materials, Chinese discount stores, florists and nut shops. As you walk around the vicinity, make a stop and taste the famous soft feta cheese of Zafolia (Sofokleous 17 tel. 2103216931), don’t be surprised by the queues in front of the dry herb sacks and the assortment of spices in Bahar (evripidou 31 tel. 2103217225), have a taste of the greek cheeses displayed in the fridges, the hanging soutzouki (a naturally ripe cured meat resembling a spicy sausage) and pastrami (dried beef or lamb meat baked in salt with a distinct aroma) in Miran (evripidou 45, tel. 2103217187) and Arapian (evripidou 41, tel. 2103217238), two shops with several decades of history. You can savour the latter’s products as is, or embellish them with eggs fried melted and served in wonderful tin pans at the tavern Karamanlidika of Fanis (Socratous & evripidou, tel. 2103254184), that also has its own small market and while you are there, have a glass of greek ouzo in the hall or the small courtyard that looks just like an old Athenian alley. if you prefer seafood, take a stroll to the pedestrian walkway of Aiolou and inside a stoa you will discover the fish restaurant Aiolou 68 (Aiolou 68, tel. 2103247925), learn about the custom of fish cured with salt and the traditional fish snack (meze), but also find out about many more contemporary recipes inspired by various parts of the world, that are ideally accompanied by greek wines and spirits.

Koukaki
A LAid-bACK NEiGhbouRhood
This year we saw Koukaki being featured in the fifth place of the airbnb users preference list, selected as one of the 16 best up-and-coming neighbourhoods worldwide for 2016. This district on the fringe of the city centre is not in the least pretentious, as it has laid-back vibes, reasonable prices and seems to attract more and more athenians as well as tourists in recent years. it is within walking distance from the acropolis Museum, the archaeological promenade of Dionysiou areopagitou and the Temple of the Olympian Zeus. in its midst, one can find the new National Museum of Contemporary art, that will officially open its gates in the fall of 2017, but grants a sneak preview to the general public through a series of temporary exhibitions. With its small shops, taverns, cafes, art shops, bars and fast food restaurants, Koukaki is a residential area full of life, which varies night and day. it is versatile and has its own blend, which you would not necessarily call eclectic or glossy, but it is friendly and encourages a more easy-going form of socializing. situated within close range from the syngrou-Fix metro station, where, just before going up the stairs, it is worth stopping and having a closer look at the many works of the famous sculptor Takis. students raise their beer glasses and drink raki in the joints of the Georgaki Olympiou pedestrian walkway, groups of friends eat and drink wine at Fabrica tou efrosinou, or nibble Greek cheese and cured meats as they explore the by the glass varieties and drinks at the wine bar BoBo (Boheme Bourgeois). Local and foreign crowds discover the recipes from Mani in the charming hall of ManiMani, found on the first floor of a building on Falirou, as well as the contemporary Greek cuisine demonstrated by the brand new Balcony restaurant that is further up in Veikou avenue. The younger crowds go bar-hopping to the alternative KiNONÓ, to the friendly BeL ray and the cosy Monsieur Barbu that makes homemade burgers and also to the congenial O Mpampas; the long-established Tiki athens still stands, as an ardent promoter of athenian exotica with its cocktails and good music and with a series of interesting live performances in this year’s agenda.

Besides the magnificent sunset and romantic view to the caldera, santorini has one more thing to be proud of: the fabulous wines produced on the island. Based on exclusively indigenous grape varieties, it has managed to establish a great reputation in high-quality wine production of mostly white, red and dessert wines. the unique terroir of santorini, a combination of volcanic and sandy soils, along with the method of grape cultivation, such as the white grape assyrtiko and the red mavrotragano, have put santorini to the top of the wine producing regions in the world. santorini is like a small rock thrown in the aegean sea. throughout the year the island is being hit by strong winds, as well as by the heat in summer and by the cold in winter, creating inhospitable conditions for the cultivation of vines. therefore, the vine growers of santorini decided to cultivate their vines very deep into the ground in wooden baskets called “kalathes”. at night, these wooden

baskets absorb the humidity that is being reflected on the vine during the day when the temperature is higher and keep the vine cool as well as protect it from the strong winds. santorini’s top white grape is the assyrtiko. White wines made of assyrtiko tend to be very dry with high levels of acidity making them extremely refreshing and pleasant. assyrtiko wines lack fruity character, with the main aromatic and textural characteristic being that of citrus fruit, green apple and a distinctive mineral character expressed by aromas of wet stone and rock. these wines have great ageing potential developing aromas of honey and wax and – for those producers who choose to ferment and age their wines in oak barrels – aromas of toasted bread and smoke. White wines from assyrtiko can be great aperitifs, as well as a great combination with any kind of seafood and shellfish. great examples of assyrtiko wines are the hatzidakis Winery and Vassaltis Winery.

Assyrtiko is also used in the production of the famous sweet wines of the island, called “Vinsanto”. Grapes are kept under sunlight until they dry up and concentrate high levels of sugar. Then they are fermented and aged in oak casks, creating wines with a deep amber colour and aromas and flavours of dried fruit, such as fig, prune and raisin, enhanced by aromas of sweet spices deriving from the use of oak. The sweetness is balanced perfectly by the natural acidity found in the Assyrtiko grape, making these wines a great way to end a meal. Great examples of “Vinsantos” can be found in the Gavalas Winery and Argyros Estate. Last but not least, Santorini’s top red grape Mavrotragano can give wines with a medium to full body, and aromas and flavours of red and black fruit that go really well with meat, such as beef or veal. Sigalas Winery is fine expression of red wines made from Mavrotragano. Cheers!

The story of my life is trying to explain to people what I do. What I’ve found to be the easiest is to show them my work, as it best speaks for itself. However, if I want to explain to myself what I am doing and have a clear orientation, then I say that the designer swings between art and science. It is the artist who wants to work with a specific agenda and for specific needs. The difference between art and design of course, is the subject of a dialogue that never really concludes. The truth is that I rely on some ancient ideas such as that of the mosaic and I also have a big love for tradition. I believe that studying the past is very important. To dig into tradition and history is like one of those dives in a pool of gold coins that Scrooge McDuck used to make. It is about the treasure that is there awaiting everyone. There are works that I love for personal reasons and then there are successful works that have helped me achieve certain goals. Obviously, both categories are just as important. I would single out the portrait series of Steve Jobs and Barack Obama. These series and works belong to both of these categories. I dealt with some favourite themes, but I also managed to reach many people. Greece is an idea. A wonderful bright idea. Apart from Greece being my family, my home, my identity, it would be just as beloved even if I was Chinese or African. Greece is the foundation of the modern world. It is that point where logic meets emotion; both geographically and politically. * www.tsevis.com
* www.tsevis.com

Aristotle is the founder of philosophy and science. Along with his teacher Plato and his pupil Alexander the Great, he is among the leading figures throughout the centuries. He established a system of values, whose primary disciplines are still applied today. His influence has been universal since reason, ethics, the philosophy of science and of law are predominantly based on the Aristotelian thought. Being a prolific writer, he is attributed with 150 works. He addressed many scientific fields and established new scholarly subjects: physics, metaphysics, chemistry, geography, meteorology, biology, logic, politics, rhetoric, the ethics of philosophy and politics, aesthetics and the theory of art. Contemporary terms of science and philosophy have their origin in Aristotle: beginning, end, substance, classification, theory, practice, reason, induction, definition, entelechy, the mean, genus and gender are some of them. Holding a dominant position in Aristotle’s work is the theory of eudaimonia or well-being. the highest ideal he teaches is eudaimonia, which is achieved by virtue. Virtue is cultivated with hexis, the habits or routines, in which, together with an appropriate education, young people should be absorbed. the principle for virtue is the mean. the mean is the balanced middle state between deficiency and excess; the measure that distinguishes man for his prudence and his reasoning. if the purpose of life is eudaimonia, then the vehicle to achieving this is the Aristotelian philosophy and especially the moral and intellectual qualities that determine a way of life and the behaviour and participation of the individual in social and political life.

Leaving the bustLing and picturesque Plaka and ascending towards the northeastern side of the acropolis, one finds himself as if having magically landed on an aegean island, but with the resounding absence of the sea. a neighbourhood that creates a unique island setting right in the capital’s centre, with its narrow meandering alleys, whitewashed roof tiled houses with blue shutters and courtyards full of jasmine, bougainvillea, potted basil, geraniums and sunbathing cats. the view is breathtaking, the city noise barely audible and it seems as if time has paused somewhere in the 19th century at the Cycladic island of anafi. that is where the two master builders Markos sigalas and george Damigos set off from in order to work on King Otto’s palace. More people followed and soon created this settlement called anafiotika, which has the architecture and name of their island, a constant reminder of their homeland. 45 small houses and about 60 residents are now left in this miniscule neighbourhood with a pervasive aegean aura that has as its “neighbours” unique monuments but also Plaka, the oldest district of europe, comprising a “synopsis” of the entire greek history. enjoy the stroll; it is really worthwhile!
