THE FUTURE OF ANTI-AGEING Consumers increasingly want to see dramatic improvement in their skins appearance but also like to see the word “naturals” on their skincare products. Impossible? No, not now the future of skincare is here with botanicals and cosmeceuticals being fused together to create unique and powerful results, putting iS Clinical at the forefront of exceptional skincare and one of the few in the advanced market that offer a pharmaceutical & botanical offering An ever growing pool of research informs us which botanicals may be combined together along with their pH requirements, concentration limits and other formulation requirements. We can then use scientific methods to test the end-product and verify its effectiveness. COSMECUTICALS EXPLAINED Cosmeceuticals are the combination of cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. provides antioxidant and anti inflammatory benefits. Consumers also strongly favor the use of naturals in their products, but not all “natural” products are good so you have to ensure the products you use or recommend, use botanicals that are of the same quality as used in medicines. HOW THEY WORK TOGETHER Nature and science joining together in the form of botanicals in cosmeceuticals is benefiting the skincare industry. Combining the best high-tech ingredients with botanicals is at the forefront of exceptional skincare that is delivering what we all want: exceptional results with less downtime - which provides advantages for both client and aesthetician.

‘The benefits to the user are remarkably effective topicals suitable for both home and professional use,’ says Dr Charlene DeHaven. BOTANICALS EXPLAINED Botanicals serve an undeniable role in many cosmecutical formulations because their multifunctional capabilities make them the ideal choices to achieve and maintain the overall health and appearance of the skin. Dr Charlene DeHaven explains: ‘A plant ingredient may be selected for its ability to resurface the skin but may be antiinflammatory and strongly anti-oxidative too.’ A good example of this is replacing salicylic acid with White Willow Bark as the salicin in White Willow Bark extract is as effective as the synthetic but is better for the skin and also

THE HARPAR GRACE GUIDE TO REDNESS TYPES, THE CAUSES, THE SYMPTONS & THE TREATMENTS
HEAD OF TRAINING, ALISON WAIT
| 08
It’s that time of year when those with redness issues become very aware of inflammation in their skin as the colder climate can really affect a compromised skin. It comes in many forms from occasional rashes accompanied by dry, itchy skin to more chronic conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis and rosacea.
texture, translucent appearance and dehydration on the cheek and forehead regions with a rough, uneven texture.
Anyone can be affected by redness at some point in their lives but it’s more commonly found in Fitzpatrick skin types I and II with more women than men being affected.
Telangiectasia and erythema can be accompanied by ‘hot spots’ on the décolletage, neck and cheeks. These symptoms are unattractive, uncomfortable and in extreme cases painful but can be viewed as warning signs of more significant risk and damage by pathogens as a damaged lipid barrier is no longer able to offer protection from external factors.
Restoring an impaired skin barrier that has been compromised is the key to bringing balance and comfort back to sensitive, reactive skin. The primary signs of sensitised skin indicate that the epidermal barrier has been compromised and generally present a thinner
WHAT CAUSES REDNESS? The two processes that contribute to sensitised skin are immunogenic inflammation and neurogenic inflammation. Both of these types of inflammation can be happening without visible signs on the skin. Often in this case, clients will complain of a

stinging, burning or itching sensation and the sensitisation can be controlled to prevent visible inflammation becoming present.
AFTER
The immunogenic inflammation response is reacting to an introduced irritant such as pollen, bacteria or artificial fragrance resulting in pain, redness and swelling in the skin. Neurogenic inflammation originates in the nerves and nervous system. Chemicals and pollutants in the environment stimulate receptors in the skin to trigger inflammation, resulting in the release of neuropeptides that trigger the inflammatory response. Under normal circumstances these substances play a highly useful role in tissue repair, however neuropeptides can also aggravate sensitive skin causing a variety of painful inflammatory conditions such as urticaria, psoriasis, rosacea and atopic dermatitis. Combining either or both of these factors, with a compromised hydro lipidic film can result at any time in inflamed and overly reactive skin. ROSACEA Rosacea is a common skin condition, usually occurring on the face, which predominantly affects fair-skinned but may affect all skin types in people aged 40 to 60 years old. It is more common in women but may be more severe in men. It’s a chronic condition, that can persist for a long time, in any individual, and the severity tends to fluctuate. Rosacea can affect the cheeks, forehead, chin and nose, and is characterised by persistent redness caused by dilated blood vessels, small bumps and pus-filled spots similar to acne There may also be uncomfortable inflammation of the surface of the eyes and eyelids. It is classified into 4 subtypes that may overlap and should always be medically
Genetics, immune system factors, and environmental factors may all play a part. Factors that trigger rosacea cause the blood vessels in the skin of the face to enlarge. The theory that rosacea is due to bacteria on the skin or in the gut has not been proven but we do know there are a variety of triggers that can make rosacea worse including alcohol, exercise, high and low temperatures, hot drinks, spicy foods and stress. Rosacea can also be sun sensitive. The cause of rosacea is not fully understood and there is no known cause but it can be treated and managed. With any redness concerns it’s important to look at the client’s total well-being ensuring they are aware of what triggers may cause flareups. Look at intelligent actives that can be applied topically to minimise calm and sooth an irritated skin. Avoid formulations that contain parabens, drying alcohols and high levels of essential oils that have been known to irritate already damaged, sensitive prone skin. Our hero product iS Clinical PRO-HEAL SERUM ADVANCE+ provide super antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and healing properties providing an exceptional healing formulation.
To support night-time regimes iS Clinical POLYVITAMIN SERUM promotes cellular regeneration, improves overall health and integrity of the skin, helping to improve the condition of a compromised and sensitive skin. When managing a compromised skin barrier it is essential that clients use a hydrator over serums and the iS Clinical REPARATIVE MOISTURE EMULSION is ideal for providing surface protection. It contains Extremozymes, a proprietary combination of extremophilic enzymes, clinically proven to protect and repair fragile proteins and DNA components. EXTREME PROTECT SPF 30 offers unprecedented multi-level spectrum UVB/UVA protection with supporting actives clinically proven to protect and repair DNA utilising Extremozymes. 5 STEPS TO STARTING A BLOG BUSINESS OPERATES IN AN EVERCHANGING LANDSCAPE OF TECHNOLOGY AND CONSUMER NEEDS. THEREFORE, IT IS IMPORTANT FOR BUSINESS TO HAVE A STRONG WEB PRESENCE TO ENGAGE AND COMMUNICATE WITH THEIR CLIENTS.
ALICIA SMITH PR, MARKETING & SOCIAL MEDIA ASSITANT
Setting up a blog doesn’t have to be complicated – if you already have a website, you’re one step there…if not it’s still simple enough.
DECIDING WHERE TO HOST Now there are many different ways to host a blog, as well as many different platforms. Wordpress, Squarespace, Blogger and Wix are four of the most popular options. Wordpress is ideal if you have experience with coding, website development and SEO – if not then Wix is a simple and easy platform to get started on. DEFINING YOUR TARGET MARKET Knowing who your blog is aimed at will help you with designing both your blog and planning content. Putting together a blog that is visually beautiful – but it isn’t functional and easily accessible your readers off could be discouraged. DESIGNING YOUR BLOG Once you have your hosting sorted now comes the design. You want to create something that reflects your business and the message you are sending to your clients. Depending on your host you might be able to find a pre-made design or you could use a design to create something bespoke and unique. You need to design on a colour scheme, which you want to work with your preexisting brand identity to avoid confusing your clients – but this doesn’t mean it has to be exactly the same. You need to make sure your blog is easy to navigate, your SEO (search engine optimisation) is up to scratch. Don’t forget to add Google Analytics so you can keep track
| 10
of page views, where youraudience and top viewed posts and pages! PLANNING CONTENT Nobody wants to read a blog that isn’t consistent with content – you want enough content to post at a minimum of once a week. When planning content you need to think about your target audience and that it has some kind of message – whether that is to inform, educate or persuade. You need to make sure your content is unique – has an edge above everyone else. That is what will keep people coming back for more. Including imagery is another way to get people engaged - whether you use your own or purchase from a stock site. GOING LIVE Setting your blog live will be scary – only you know when it will be ready to go up. It is however always good to have a handful of posts set live already so that readers have something to ready while you get into the swing of regularly creating content.

THE IMPORTANCE OF THE GUT IN SKIN HEALTH Skin is the largest organ in the body and crucially the only organ we have ongoing visual access to. Your skin is a visible reflection of your health and an important indicator of you inner health, in particular your gut health. Many skin conditions such as eczema, dry skin, acne and rosacea can be linked to the gut health as their root cause. As such, addressing gut health is perhaps the most effective starting point in achieving healthy glowing skin, particularly as we age. So why is gut health so important for your skin? We rub off millions of skin cells every day and create a whole new layer of skin every 17-42 days. With a healthy digestive tract and efficient digestion, the digestive process will deliver all the nutrients to effect this turnover. The role of digestion is to break down the foods we eat, process them and consequently absorb the nutrients from these foods, so that our body has all the nutrients it needs to grow, repair and function optimally. Compromised gut health will inhibit this process and your body will not receive sufficient nutrients. Whilst the body will prioritise life-threatening functions, hair, skin and nail health are considered less crucial and will not receive adequate nutrients if the nutrients are lacking. This is immediately noticeable visually with symptoms such as splitting nails, lack-lustre hair and dull skin. Healing your gut is crucial to ensure optimal health. In the first instance, limiting sugar and refined carbohydrates and alcohol as well as eating a diet which includes plenty of colourful vegetables and
| 12
fruits will provide a rich source of nutrients and fibre, as well as good fats found in nuts/seeds, oily fish, avocado. However, if gut health has been allowed to deteriorate over time, the lining of the intestines can become damaged and inflamed. This allows undigested food proteins as well as toxic waste products to pass through the intestine barriers, which would otherwise be tight junctions in a healthy gut, directly into the blood stream. This is called Leaky Gut Syndrome and if not addressed, can wreak havoc throughout the body; causing an autoimmune response which can result in symptoms such as allergic reactions, food allergies, migraines and fatigue. The biggest digestive benefit of consuming a quality collagen supplement is that it helps form connective tissue and therefore “seals and heals” the protective lining of the gastrointestinal tract. One of the most effective nutrients that can be used to help heal this damage is L-Glutamine, an amino acid that can repair and reverse these damaging effects. Alongside dietary changes, taking Totally Derma® collagen drink supplement daily (containing 18 amino acids, including the gut-supporting amino acids glutamine and glycine) can begin to rejuvenate the lining of the intestinal wall within 12 weeks. With a healthy digestive system and a good diet, you can look forward to healthy fresh-looking skin with renewed energy and vigour. ANITA EYLES, TOTALLY DERMA FOUNDER

IN COVERSATION WITH ANITA EYLES WE SPOKE TO ANTIA EYLES, FOUNDER OF TOTALLY DERMA® IN WHICH WE DISCUSSED HOW SHE CREATED THE NEUTRACEUTICAL, ALONG WITH THE INGREDIENTS WHICH CAN BE FOUND WITHIN THE PRODUCT.
Totally Derma® is an anti-ageing, nutraceutical collagen drink supplement. How did you devise the concept behind this product? AE: Whilst training for a half marathon, I was advised by a nutritionist to take Arthred®, a 10,000mg therapeutic dose of bovine amino acid peptide powder. Published clinical studies demonstrate that Arthred® strengthens and rebuilds cartilage in knees. Not only did this have a hugely beneficial effect on alleviating the pain in my joints, I also experience longer and stronger hair and nails, as well as much more hydrated, denser and radiant skin. The gynecological benefits were also apparent. This was the moment I decided to develop a nutraceutical health supplement that would transcend the physiological benefits to the medical aesthetic market. However, the roots of specialised evidence-based ingredients are cemented in the muscoloskeletal market.
dryness. Totally Derma® contains 18 specific amino acids, including arginine, proline, glycine and hydroxyproline (the essential bulding block for collagen synthesis). Totally Derma® contains higher levels of hydroxypproline and proline than marine collagen. Indeed, a 2015 clinical study showed that serum hydroxyproline rise to 3500 per cent within two hours of Totally Derma® consumption. The seven co-factors in Totally Derma include ®: Vitamin C: a powerful anti-oxidant that stimulates collagen in joints in bones. It also stimulates fibroblasts, the cells responsible for producing collagen.
Alpha Lipoic Acid: increase bone mineral density more than calcium and vitamin D alone. It protects fibroblasts and slows down the ageing process. Copper: essential for health cross-linking of collagen and elastin. It is also used for wound healing treating osteoarthritis and brittle bones. Manganese: strengthens immature collagen and influences fibril size> Zinc: essential for collagen synthesis and crucial for superoxide dismutase synthesis that protects against oxidative stress.
Green Tea Extract: improves elasticity, density, water content and microcirculation in skin. Also has strong antiinflammatory properties and protects against arthritis.
What is the research behind Totally Derma® ? AE: Totally Derma® is formulated by pharmaceutical-grade food supplement manufacturers, Allergy Research Group, known for their cutting-edge, patented, scientifically-researched nutritional supplements. Totally Derma® contains patented enzymatically hydrolysed bovine collagen and patented hyaluronic acid, plus seven co-factors. All these support, enhance and promote collagen and hyaluronic acid, which in turn, deliver visible improvements in overall skin, hair, nails, joints, gut health, general health, well being and gynecological menopausal

BUSINESS BASICS FOR BUSY DIRECTORS
BUILDING A BUSINESS PLAN FOR 2020 Whilst strategic plans, detailed monthly & annual P&Ls and budgetary reporting is ideal its not always practical or possible for some business owners. Equally those managing a business within a much larger corporate structure most often find themselves un-exposed to the higher level management planning yet needing a structure & process in place to keep the team & business on track. Business plans don’t have to be overwhelming and an old saying comes to mind when contemplating the planning of the business – “Done is better than perfect” WHERE ARE WE RIGHT NOW? Start simple. Take a quarterly view on performance using last quarter as a guide & where you need to be next quarter to draw up a target to achieve using your two main sources of income as benchmarks. • Treatment revenue • Retail Revenue
RETAIL REVENUE Again break this down to a monthly figure & divide an average of £60 (an average retail value or one you feel is indicative of your business) by the number of staff you have to not only give a daily target as a team but give individuals a monthly /weekly unit sales to be accountable to. IDENTIFY ANY INCREMENTAL STREAMS OF REVENUE New product or treatment introduction/ event/ concierge programme which can boost figures Define your activity & allocate RESPONSIBLE team member for each month to drive the figures & define any specific campaigns, training & resource needed to help you hit the numbers. Reward for individual & team success when the monthly & also quarterly figures are hit to maintain momentum and a motivated team effort throughout the quarter. Document & Display your quarterly plan to keep it in minds eye all quarter – issue monthly or weekly updates to remind your team you are monitoring
TREATMENT INCOME What does that figure look like monthly broken down into 3 months & where should growth be applied month to month?
It really can be that simple.. you can refine & develop your model as you progress but at least you are off the ground with a 3 month guide that motivates, inspires & rewards.
Then break this down to give you a daily income to achieve for treatments & where possible target each type of treatment you offer as they will all offer differing revenues?

THE ART OF CLEANSING SKIN-CARE REGIMES CAN BE SERIOUS RITUALS - HOW YOU PREP YOUR SKIN IN THE MORNING AND BEFORE BED CAN HIGHLY IMPACT THE HEALTH AND CONDITION OF YOUR SKIN. ONE KEY STEP IN EVERY SKIN-CARE ROUTINE IS THE CLEANSE. WHETHER YOU SINGLE CLEANSE OR PREFER A DOUBLE CLEANSE, THERE IS NO DOUBT THAT CLEANSING IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF ANY SKIN-CARE REGIME. Great skin starts with a thorough cleansing regime and if you are wearing makeup and an SPF – an SPF should be used by everyone, everyday! – you need to be double cleansing in the evening. Double cleansing is the best way to prepare your skin for your continued regime, allowing serums and the rest of your routine to take effect and work to their maximum potential. iS Clinical & CODAGE Paris are dedicated to developing results-driven, unique and highly efficacious skincare products and the cleansers are no exception. The idea of cleansing dates back to the origins of the human race, only it would have be performed in a very different way! In the earliest times, cleansing was performed by using a piece of bone to scrape the skin - with later civilizations using plant origin along with water for cleansing. Cleansing has since come a long way beyond dirt removal. Not only is the art of cleansing a way to improve skin health and appearance, but also a means of relaxation and escape from the vagaries of everyday. Now we cleanse because our skins oils are polluted with bacteria overgrowth, makeup, dirt from the air and free radicals from pollution. It's important to remember that while cleansing is the most

important step of a skincare routine - it can also be the most disruptive. Cleansing too much can leave the skin feeling tight and dehydrated from lack of sebum and skin moisture. Issues like acne can be caused from over cleansing as a result of too much friendly bacteria being removed - leaving room for nasty bacteria to grow. Cleansing should take place in the morning, evening and after any physical activity. The morning cleanse helps remove any excretions or sweat that has built up as you sleep.
