Look out this Autumn for activities hosted by the Harris as part of The Big Draw and the popular Harris Open Exhibition. Fresh from directing Piercing Brightness, a science-fiction film set in and around Preston and filmed on location in the city, Shezad Dawood drops in to talk about his exciting new exhibition. Exhibition in Focus
Shezad Dawood: Piercing Brightness Until 26 November 2011 Piercing Brightness is an exhibition of new work by international artist, Shezad Dawood, exploring themes of place, culture and belief. It includes new textile and neon sculptural works, alongside a recent experimental film made in Morocco called New Dream Machine Project, 2011. The show complements Dawood’s science-fiction feature film, also entitled Piercing Brightness, 2011 and its associated gallery version Trailer, 2011, set in and around Preston city centre.
Exhibition presented by the Harris Museum & Art Gallery, Modern Art Oxford, and Newlyn Art Gallery & The Exchange, with the support of Arts Council England.

Dawood developed much of the work over a two-year research period where he explored Preston’s social and political history and met various community and faith groups in the city. The feature film, Piercing Brightness, 2011 was commissioned by In Certain Places, a public art programme run jointly by the Harris and the University of Central Lancashire. A gallery version, Trailer, 2011, will be on show from mid-October.

Exhibitions Global Threads: Asian Textiles & Fashion Today
Harris Open Exhibition 10 December 2011 – 14 January 2012
Until 30 June 2012 Global Threads is an exciting fashion exhibition co-curated by young people. It mixes historic South Asian textiles with today’s catwalk, high street and student fashions. The exhibition is inspired by a beautiful 18-volume set of historic fabric sample books, The Textile Manufactures of India, given to Preston in 1866. You can explore all 700 textiles that inspired Global Threads on a new website www.tmoi.org.uk See pages 10-12 for our events programme. This exhibition is part of Stories of the World, one of the projects at the heart of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad.
Don’t miss our annual celebration of local creative talent. We’re inviting Preston-based artists to show painting, photography, sculpture, ceramics, textiles and more. This is your chance to share your artistic skills with the whole city. This year we are highlighting the work of some of the community groups that have worked closely with the Harris over the past year, including Young Harris. As always we encourage children to enter the section for under 16s. You can pick up an entry form at the museum or download one from the Harris website. Handing in days for work are Friday 2 and Saturday 3 December. Many items are for sale and make unique Christmas presents.

Decorative Art
New History Gallery
The decorative art collection includes ceramics, glass, costume and textiles dating from the 1700s to modern day. In the Ceramics & Glass Gallery you’ll find everything from Staffordshire figures to studio pottery. Don’t miss Mrs French’s Scent Bottle Collection with over 2,700 bottles to explore. And in the Costume Gallery come along and admire Global Threads, a fashion exhibition that’s part of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad. (See page 5 for details.)
Work is now well underway preparing the new history gallery so that it is ready to open in time for the 2012 Preston Guild. The gallery is being transformed into an inspiring space filled with favourite objects, like the 12,000 year old Poulton Elk, plus new stories investigating what makes Preston special. A new Discovery Room will provide lively opportunities for all visitors to investigate our collections more closely. The Story of Preston gallery is now closed for the refurbishment.
This season we’re taking a closer look at our lace collection and exploring drawing in clay as part of The Big Draw. Help us plan our Guild Fashion exhibition for 2012 by sharing in one of our reminiscence sessions or come along to a fab festive fashion event in December. And why not freshen up in January with a look at some novelty scent bottles. (See events on pages 10–11)
We are very grateful to all of the project funders, including the Heritage Lottery Fund and Friends of the Harris Museum & Art Gallery, for helping us to make our plans a reality. Find out more about the gallery by coming along to one of the events marked on pages 10–11. To join our History Gallery mailing list email harrismuseum@preston.gov.uk, and put ‘New History Gallery’ in the subject line.
