TAKE ON THE ELEMENTS
on location We took our Coats to FoGo IsLand, off Newfoundland’s northeastern coast, to put them through their paces. With icebergs drifting by in the cold Atlantic, there was a definite chill in the air, but it was more than balanced by the warm welcome we received from the islanders. In the background of our picture looms Brimstone Head, believed by some to be one of the four corners of the Earth.
on the cover Mackage Here’s a very Warm, down-filled bomber
in exceptionally soft, black lamb leather. Mackage uses only top-quality down, treated to maximize the warmth/weight ratio. The removable gilet connects to a hood lined with rabbit fur and trimmed with Asian raccoon fur. The quilted leather hood looks like a vintage aviator cap and has a top buckle for adjusting its fit. Ribbed cuffs and hem keep things snug. $1,350.
this page g lab G Lab’s Commander jaCket is made in a patented, triple-layer ballistic nylon that is waterproof and windproof but comfortably breathable. As warm as a down-filled coat but without any bulk, the fabric feels indestructible. A removable liner zips out for autumn days while a drawstring lets you cinch the waist. Big patch pockets and articulated elbows reflect the company’s motorcycling roots. The hood is removable. Available in black or red. $895.

EvEr sincE i was a wEE boy and my mom first zippEd mE up into a snowsuit and sEnt mE out to play (glovEs on a string through thE slEEvEs) , I have appreciated
the value of outerwear. It was the same when I was a teenager, shivering in a James Dean–style leather jacket (inadequate protection but it looked so cool), and later too, when I went off to work wearing my first tailored overcoat over my suit. Coats are important! Especially in a country like ours, where winter can sometimes play rough. This is the sixth year of our Outerwear Guide and it’s remarkable how coats have evolved in that time. Around the world, companies are continually refining their technical capabilities and I’m proud that Canadian designers Canada Goose and Mackage are leaders in the field. The Harry Rosen team often sits down with them to brainstorm ideas; together, we have developed coats that can meet the differing needs of Canadian men from Vancouver to Montreal to Fogo Island. Last year’s polar vortex brought us all new challenges but it also served as the perfect laboratory for testing the true strengths of our outerwear.
Of course, practicality is only part of the story. Style matters, too. Today’s man may have a number of coats for different temperatures and occasions but he always wants to look great in whatever he’s wearing. For half the year, more people will see you in a coat than in anything else, and you want to make a very positive first impression. This book shows only a small fraction of the outerwear we carry in our stores and online but I hope it offers a little inspiration for the coming season – for work, for weekends and for those chilly mornings when your mom sends you out to play in the snow.

for something smarter. Then again, if he drives to work every day, he’ll want another coat that isn’t too long or too hot, even in the depths of winter. He might also wish to throw in a little luxury to his collection – a lightweight modern shearling, perhaps. All these things give extra value to a coat that offers real versatility, that has a removable gilet or lining, for example, or that manages to look equally great over a sports jacket or a chunky sweater and jeans. Here are some suggestions for coats to carry you through from early fall to deep mid-winter, and from walking the dog to walking into the office.
