PRESIDENT’S LETTER
Dear Fellow Members,
Happy Spring! This year the occurrences of traditional springtime religious observances are spread out over three months. May your observances be filled with the meaning that is intended and may you and your families enjoy your celebrations.
March featured a number of events that covered a variety of interests. Many thanks to our Member Experience team for their diligent efforts to provide enjoyable experiences for our members to engage in fellowship, knowledge, and fun. April is upon us and with its arrival there is a noticeable uptick in clubhouse and off-site events along with University activity. The Red Sox Home Opener is on April 9, so we hope that you will cheer on the home team with fellow members. April 15 is One Boston Day. This is a special day when the City of Boston invites community-based organizations, businesses, and City of Boston residents to come together for volunteer events and acts of kindness in recognition of our city’s spirit of care for one another in response to the tragic events of April 15, 2013. April 15 is also the 128th running of the Boston Marathon! Come by the clubhouse to cheer on your favorite runner and enjoy the day. This year Carolyn Longden, our Member Events Director, will be participating in her 14th marathon and sixth Boston Marathon. Run Carolyn, Run. Best of luck to all our runners. Monday, April 22 is the 54th commemoration of Earth Day. For more information, please view a full list of Harvard’s Earth Day events.
Our Annual Meeting will be held on Monday, April 29 at 5:30 PM. Eligible members may vote for the slate of nominees through proxy ballots starting on Monday, April 8. At 6:00 PM, our Harvard Celebration of Spring begins. Spring is the time of year that reminds us of the anticipation of Commencement on May 23. We here at the HCB look forward to this time of year as we focus on welcoming new alumni in our Club community and connecting with friends, we may not have seen during the winter season. It’s a time when we look to strengthen our connection to fellow alums through reunions and Alumni Day on May 31. We are connected through education and engagement of Harvard. This year’s Annual Meeting will feature a conversation with Hopi Hokstra, Edgerly Family Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. Dean Hokstra will be in conversation with Dr. Elizabeth Micci, Ed.L.D, a member of our Board of Governors. This will be an opportunity to hear about current and future plans for the largest school within the University. It will also be an evening of fellowship within the Harvard Club of Boston and Harvard community.
Congratulations are in order for Harvard fencing team for winning the NCAA Fencing National Championship for the second time in program history. We also salute three Harvard fencers - Lauren Scruggs and Elizabeth Tartakovsky '23 along with Eli Dershowitz ‘19 - who will represent the United States at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Joining them in Paris will be former Harvard-Radcliffe Rower Olivia Coffey '11 who was chosen to represent the United States in the 2024 Paris Olympic Games in both the eight and the four. Coffey will be competing in her second Olympic games, last racing for the United States in 2020. In the sport of squash, Saran Nghiem brought the Ramsay Cup back to Cambridge after she defeated her teammate, Marina Stefanoni, in the CSA Individual National Championship. Many more Crimson athletes competed admirably in national championships, and we continue to be honored to welcome many of them at our clubhouse for their post-season awards dinners. Be sure to head over to campus this month to watch the spring teams in action, including the nationally-ranked men’s lacrosse team.
Earlier this year, the Harvard Alumni Association Nominating Committee released its slate of candidates for the spring 2024 elections of new members to the Harvard Board of Overseers and elected directors of the Harvard Alumni Association. The HCB has three fellow members who have been nominated as candidates. Scott Mead ’77 and Tim Ritchie MPA ’98 are candidates for Overseer, and Madeleine Mejia Ed.M. ’00 is a candidate for elected director for the HAA. The voting website will be available from April 1 through 5:00 PM (EDT) on May 14, 2024. Your vote is important.
Many thanks to all of you for choosing to be members of our beloved Club. As a member of the greatest alumni network in the world, thank you for filling our Club with a spirit of unity and congeniality, respect, and kindness. Your loyalty and support make us thrive as a community, onward together. If you have questions or suggestions, please contact me directly at president@harvardclub.com.
