We look forward to this New Year bringing even more opportunities for us to serve you with greater excellence. Thank you for being our valuable members and for making HCB the greatest alumni community in the world. Happy New Year 2023.
PRESIDENT’S LETTER
Dear Fellow Members, Happy New Year! May the new year bring you excellent health, happiness and peace of mind. I trust that you enjoyed the holiday season with your loved ones. Last year at this time, we celebrated the full reopening of our clubhouse. We welcomed new members and were happy to see former members return, along with enjoying the fellowship of each other’s company whether gathered on Commonwealth Avenue or at another venue. No matter where we are, in-person or online, we are a Club community.
We all were pleased to learn the exciting news in December that Claudine Gay, the Edgerly Family Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, was elected to become the 30th President of Harvard University. We congratulate President-Elect Gay on her election and look to her leadership of our beloved University for many years to come.
Last month Philip Lovejoy completed his service to Harvard University as Executive Director of the Harvard Alumni Association. He has served the University admirably for 25 years. Philip is a member of our Board of Governors, and we are fortunate that he has agreed to continue serving on our board until his term ends. Thank you, Philip, for your service to the Harvard community. You made a lasting impact on the Harvard community, and we are forever grateful for your leadership and wisdom.
We welcome Sarah Karmon as an HCB member in her role as the new Executive Director of the HAA. Sarah has been at the University for more than 25 years in various roles, most recently serving as Deputy Executive Director of the HAA. We welcome Sarah as a new member, and we look forward to working with her and the HAA team in her new position.
Our Member Experience Committee has been working diligently as always to enhance current events and create new engaging activities. In progress are plans to have Governor Baker, Governor-Elect Healy and Harvard University President-Elect Gay join us for events in 2023. We will continue to strengthen our connection to the University by holding joint programming and hosting events both at the club and off site. Excitement continues to build for the return of more activities and services in ClubPlub. Starting in January, we will introduce new drink specials to complement our complimentary appetizer program, and we will host First Friday Game Night and Thursday Trivia Night. Jazz Brunch will also make return to Harvard Hall on January 29th. The aforementioned are just a small sample of the activities and events the Club has to offer. Be sure to review our app and website for more events and to register accordingly.
I also encourage you to start a new health and wellness routine by joining HCB Athletics. We now have 14 weekly virtual fitness classes and have added pickleball. For information on an athletic membership, please contact Valerie Phillips, Athletic Manager, at vphillips@harvardclub.com. Harvard winter sports are in full swing with Ivy League Conference play commencing this month. Cheer on our Crimson teams in the ClubPub or stop by the clubhouse for a meal before attending a home game.
Many thanks to all of you for choosing to be members of our beloved Club. Your loyalty and support make us thrive as a community, onward together. If you have questions or suggestions, please contact me directly via president@harvardclub.com
Best regards, Marcus O. P. DeFlorimonte gb ’95, pmd President, Harvard Club of Boston
GENERAL MANAGER’S LETTER
This past month, our FY2022 Audit was finalized. I am happy to report that we had a very solid year from a financial standpoint. Our net operating income of $490,000 exceeded budget by more than $1.7 million, and we ended the year with $4.6 million in cash. We also finished the year with an additional 166 new dues paying members.
Over the course of the year, we successfully completed a number of capital projects which allow our clubhouse to remain not only functional but comfortable and welcoming for our members and guests. Here are just a few of those major initiatives.
• Completed our overnight room bathroom renovations. All of our 25 guest rooms, which are available for members and your guests, have new tile floors, walls, fixtures and showers among other enhancements.
• Finished a significant brick re-pointing project.
• Installed new carpeting on the 4th and 5th floor Inn hallways.
• Began preliminary work for our roof replacement project.
• Renovated the fireplaces in both Harvard Hall and President’s Room. We will also be installing a new electric fireplace in ClubPub next month.
• Continued the architectural and legal support for our exterior dining expansion plan.
As we start the New Year, I am also pleased to inform you that we will be introducing additional food and beverage service. Beginning on January 3rd, we will be expanding our ClubPub offering. In addition to free appetizers Monday through Friday from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., we will be rolling out specially-priced beer flights that will only be offered in ClubPub (see page 8). Our culinary team will also be offering a special Sunday Brunch Buffet featuring live jazz entertainment beginning on January 29th. Finally, we are working diligently on a concept to offer a la carte food service in the ClubPub this spring. All of these enhancements are part of our continued work to bring even more member experiences throughout the clubhouse.
While we press forward with plans and initiatives to continually improve the club and member experience, I would also like to thank our members for your ongoing and unwavering support of our staff. A list of our valued staff and several photos are featured at the end of the Bulletin. We all greatly appreciate the opportunity to work with an incredible community of HCB members.
I hope you and your loved ones had a wonderful holiday season and my best wishes for a healthy 2023.
Sincerely,
Steven P. Cummings CCM, CCE General Manager

New Year. New Harvard Club.
At our December Cocktail 374 event we unveiled a sneak peek at two of the videos that will be a part of Harvard Club of Boston’s new marketing campaign in 2023. These new marketing assets will officially be released later this month and they are the centerpiece of our efforts to spread the word about our incredible HCB network. The campaign is warm and welcoming. It reflects a new energy, a new voice, and a new, modern direction for the Harvard Club of Boston. If you watch closely you may also spy a new twist on our HCB logo that will start to appear in 2023.
