Dear Fellow Members,

By the end of March, spring will have begun and hopefully the weather will cooperate. Here at HCB, we are ready to kick off what will be an exciting spring season. As you review the Bulletin, please note the variety of social, intellectual and athletic activities that make our Club a place for fun and fellowship. Here are some notable dates to mark on your calendars:

It’s that time of year for Harvard elections, Harvard University Overseers and HAA Elected Directors. The voting period begins on March 31st and ends May 16th. After nearly a year of public hearings and regulatory activity, I am pleased to share an update on the 415 Newbury Street development project. Trinity Financial, Inc. has filed a detailed response to its initial application and taken the next step in the complex application process with the BPDA (Boston Planning and Development Agency) to advance this project. We are pleased that in this filing Trinity has been able to incorporate so much feedback from our neighbors and the extensive public review over the past several months. We look forward to continued progress with the regulatory process. We anticipate that the City review will be completed

sometime later this year and culminate in a BPDA vote on the project. For those of you who don’t recall or are new to the club, last spring Trinity Financial, Inc informed the City of Boston of its proposal to build two residential structures (11 and 3 stories) with approximately 134 apartment homes and new facilities for the Club plus a parking structure for the Club’s use. This project, located on the parking lot footprint and in place of the current athletic building, allows the Harvard Club to conduct required, but costly accessibility upgrades. In addition, it offers us the opportunity to further modernize our facilities, with one of the buildings providing four floors of dedicated Harvard Club member and multi-use space, updated squash and fitness facilities, modern locker rooms, and new childcare space, among other amenities.

Over the past year, the requirements for large scale projects have changed and Trinity has reconfigured some details of the project to comply with these requirements. The project as proposed now consists of the same 11 and 3 story buildings and embedded parking structure, but the configuration has shifted to include approximately 95 apartment units in the 11-story tower and 38 mixed income condominium homes. This is, in part, Trinity’s response to the City’s requirement for mixed income accommodations in new construction projects and the changing nature of the market.

At this time, we expect that the proposed project will require several more months of review before going before the BPDA board for approval; if successfully approved, construction would potentially begin in 2024. The Harvard Club will use that time wisely to develop plans to address construction impacts on the Club, particularly as it relates to parking and athletic facilities. We are already exploring options for valet parking, partnerships with other facilities for access to sports and

fitness spaces, and more. This project represents a critical opportunity to transform our clubhouse and make our facilities accessible to all our members and guests. You can be confident that any limited disruption will be overshadowed by the ultimate transformation.

The Steering Committee of the Club’s Facilities Planning Committee is communicating regularly with Trinity on their plans and will advise the Club’s Board on any final decisions facing the Club once the process is complete. GENERAL MANAGER’S LETTER

Although Mother Nature continues to deliver us some wintery weather, we are already earnestly preparing for what will be a very busy spring season. Our clubhouse has continued to be a welcome retreat for our members who are enjoying the space for dining, working, networking, relaxing and even hosting events for friends, family and business. We pride ourselves in making our clubhouse fully accessible for members and the staff is always willing to work with you to ensure that this clubhouse is your clubhouse for whatever your needs may be.

The construction on the second floor continues and should be completed within the next few weeks. We have appreciated your patience over the past months, but we are very pleased with the results which will not only see the second floor fully handicapped accessible but the Gardner Room will have a beautiful upgrade which will be timely as we begin to host more and more member events on the second floor.

Over the past month, our staff has been working with local design firms to review our space so that they can provide recommendations on how we can enhance our beautiful and historic clubhouse. We are also looking into the latest technology which will allow us to better communicate with our members whether you are near or far. Food service throughout the club continues to be a priority for our operations team. You will begin to see more activities in areas such as ClubPub and Harvard Foyer this spring with the goal of introducing full food service in ClubPub later this year. The response to the events hosted in ClubPub and to

our complimentary appetizer food offering every Monday through Friday from 6:00pm to 8:00pm has been tremendous, and we look forward to continuing that as a service for our members. Our Reciprocal Committee continues to explore new destinations. Our goal will be to eclipse the 200 reciprocal club mark in the near future so that we can create a connection for our members in all parts of the world. With summer on the horizon, we are also excited about expanding and promoting our Golf Society, which I recommend you check out. Our Golf Society gives our members exclusive access to some of the premier golf destinations in Massachusetts.

At the heart of everything is our members and your support. Everything that we do as a club is focused on our members and the community that we can create for you. My door is always open to you for suggestions, comments and feedback. You are what is important, and we consider it a true privilege to serve your needs.

HAA Nominates 3 HCB Members for Board of Overseers & Elected Directors

The Harvard Alumni Association nominating committee announced candidates for the Board of Overseers — the University’s second-highest governing body — and for elected directors of the HAA. The nominating committee, composed of alumni volunteers, selected eight candidates for five expected vacancies on the Board of Overseers and nine candidates for six vacancies for the HAA elected directors.

Among the Board of Overseers on the ballot are two HCB members: Boston Symphony Orchestra CEO Jeffrey D. Dunn ’77 and former HAA President Vanessa W. Liu ’96. Along with nine other Harvard alums on the ballot for HAA Elected Directors is HCB member Anirudh Suri, mpa ’14, founding partner of the venture capital firm India Internet Fund.

The Board of Overseers was established in 1642. Its work includes directing the “periodic external assessment” of Harvard’s various schools and departments and advising University administration on initiatives. The HAA elected directors strive to bolster alumni engagement around the world. Prior initiatives have included outreach to recent graduates and building inclusive alumni networks.

Elections will begin March 31 and end on May 16.

Baby & Me Yoga

Focus on you and your little Yogi. Baby and Me Yoga will restore balance and health to the physical body for postnatal women helping them resume physical activity in a fun and flexible environment.

You will practice gentle yoga poses, relaxation and breathing techniques throughout this 1-hour class. During the session you will learn infant massage techniques and stretches for your baby while bonding, stretching and strengthening your body.

It will be held on the Lower Level of the Clubhouse in the yoga room next to the squash court.

Sketch & Sip with a Professional Artist

We enjoyed our first evening drawing class with Artist Eli Portman. Our members sipped on Prosecco and then practiced making still life drawings and learned about shading, composition, drawing form shapes and more.

Darman's new book, Becoming FDR: The Personal Crisis that Made a President, tells the story of the years of personal struggle that remade Franklin Roosevelt’s character, creating a compassionate and transformational leader.

Darman is a historian who writes about American politics and the presidency. Intro to Pickleball!

Orwell's Roses Impact on Society

Our Public Policy Book Club will take a reflective look at Rebecca Solnit’s book Orwell’s Roses which is a blend of biography, memoir, and meditative essay. In her latest book, Solnit explores the life and legacy of English writer George Orwell. Her discovery that Orwell planted roses in 1936 at his cottage in Wallington, England, led her to take a deeper dive into his work, highlighting his love of nature, his attachment to beauty, and his commitment to social justice and political transparency. An Unforgettable Evening with the Governor

Her incredible and trailblazing journey took her from a farm house in Hampton Falls, New Hampshire to the Crimson court to the State House. When Maura Healey '92 was sworn in as 73rd Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts this year, she broke even more barriers. On March 28th, she will be coming to the Harvard Club of Boston to share her stories exclusively with our members.

Exclusive Excursion to Gardner Museum

MARCH 29TH | 10:30AM – 2:00PM | ISABELLA STEWART GARDNER MUSEUM

The Crimson Hat group will hit the road for a special visit to the acclaimed Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum where they will enjoy a tour of the Betye Saar: Heart of a Wanderer exhibit. Betye Saar is a celebrated contemporary artist and leading figure of the Black Arts Movement in the 1970s. The Betye Saar: Heart of a Wanderer explores Saar’s trips to Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas, highlighting works influenced by her many trips and her engagement with global histories of travel.

The Crimson Hat excursion will include HCB Shuttle service to and from the Gardner Museum and then lunch in Veritas.

Registration is required for this event. The Gardner Museum tour will be $20 per person. Charges for the HCB shuttle will be assessed based on attendance and are estimated at $10 per person.

An Insider’s View Into the Crime of the Century

MARCH 29TH | 6:30PM – 8:00PM |

On March 18, 1989, the biggest property crime in United States History took place steps away from the Harvard Club of Boston — the theft of 13 works of art from the Isabella Steward Gardner Museum.

The crime has been the subject of books, Boston Globe stories, and a Netflix documentary. But one man is at the center of it all — Anthony Amore, the director of security for the Gardner. Hired after the theft, Amore has spent more than 15 years investigating the theft, seeking to bring the thieves to justice, but, more critically, return these priceless works of art to the public.

This isn’t the first time Anthony Amore has been at the center of a high profile case. He was instrumental in the reorganization and regionalization of national homeland security efforts postSeptember 11th and was the agency’s lead agent responding to the attempted terrorist attack by Richard Reid, the so-called “Shoe Bomber” in December 2001.

Amore has appeared on the BBC, NBC, NPR, CNN, Fox and others. But on March 29th, he’ll be appearing exclusively at the Harvard Club of Boston for a fireside chat. Any fee or charge imposed by the Harvard Club for meal or beverage service, private functions or use of the Club’s facilities, including the Club Charge, pays for regular maintenance and restoration of the Club and other costs incurred by the Club. No fee or charge added to your statement for meal or beverage service, private function or use of the Club facilities is a tip, gratuity or service charge for wait staff, bartenders or service employees.

CANCELLATION POLICY

To cancel an event reservation, log on to harvardclub.com and select the event you want to cancel from your dashboard. Click the button at the bottom that says “CANCEL RESERVATION.” If you need assistance, call 617-450-8493. Unless a cancellation date is specified, cancellations made five days prior to the event will not be charged. Any cancellations after that deadline will be charged in full.

ATHLETIC WAIVER

All athletics members must submit a signed liability waiver in order to use the Club’s athletic facilities. Waivers are available in the Fitness Center or by contacting our Athletic Department Manager, Valerie Phillips, at 617-450-8485.
