PRESIDENT’S LETTER

Dear Fellow Members,

The longer days are coming and hopefully the weather becomes more pleasant sooner rather than later but it’s New England one never knows. March is the beginning of our busy season, and we have a variety of events that cover many interests. March is also Women’s History Month and Irish Heritage Month. There are three events that will be highlights during month – Harvard Alumni Association Global Networking Night on March 13th, A Fireside Chat with Former Massachusetts Governor Jane Swift on March 14th, and A Fireside Chat with President Emerita Drew Faust on March 20th. Please check the app and website for both onsite and off-site events.

HCB member benefits are a vital component of the member experience. Our Member Experience Team has been working diligently to develop the number of member benefits for our members to enjoy. We recently established a partnership with Little Lovage Club, Boston's premier parenting resource and play space for young children; dedicated to helping families grow, learn and love. We are also delighted to partner with Trademark Tours, a leading provider of tours and educational services at Harvard and MIT. Founded in 2006 and acquired by Harvard Student Agencies in 2021, Trademark Tours has a long history of providing top-notch experiences that are entertaining, theatrical, and extremely informative. We highly recommend this activity for visiting family and friends! One of our best member benefits is our robust reciprocal club network that continues to expand with new locations. Please keep in mind whether traveling for business or pleasure, we have over 180 locations both domestically and internationally. Thanks to the Reciprocal Clubs Committee for their ongoing efforts on behalf of our members.

The Wi-Fi project has been completed. There is now consistent connectivity and a stronger signal in all locations throughout the clubhouse. Kudos to our staff for their fantastic work and to all of you for your patience and understanding throughout this project. We have begun the process of refurbishing various pieces of artwork throughout our clubhouse. The first piece completed was President John Adams and is displayed on the wall next to the staircase that goes to the 2nd floor. This is the time of year that selected artwork from our collection gets rotated within the clubhouse. Many thanks to the Fine Arts Committee for their guidance.

We are blessed to have many cultural riches at the University and in the Boston area. The HCB is working with the American Repertory Theatre and the Handel & Hayden Society

to provide enhanced access for members to enjoy these artistic delights. We are very appreciative to club members Kelvin Dinkins, Executive Director of the A.R.T. and Cristina Coletta Blau ’87, member of the Board of Advisors for H&H Society for their efforts on our behalf.

It's that time of year again for our Annual Member Update of Information. We ask that you take a moment and verify that your information is accurate and updated. We do this to maximize your experience with the club while also ensuring you receive pertinent news and information in a timely manner. Please take a minute to review your member profile on the website and update any relevant details using this link. Thank you for your attention and assistance.

Many thanks to all of you for choosing to be members of our beloved Club. As a member of the greatest alumni network in the world, thank you for filling our Club with a spirit of unity and congeniality, respect, and kindness. Your loyalty and support make us thrive as a community, onward together. If you have questions or suggestions, please contact me directly at president@harvardclub.com

Best regards,

Go Crimson!

Democracy Awakening:

Notes on the State of America

MARCH 8TH | 8:00AM | VIRTUAL

In the midst of the impeachment crisis of 2019, Heather Cox Richardson launched a daily Facebook essay providing the historical background of the daily torrent of news. It soon turned into a newsletter and its readership ballooned to more than 2 million dedicated readers who rely on her plainspoken and informed take on the present and past in America.

In Democracy Awakening, Richardson crafts a compelling and original narrative, explaining how, over the decades, a small group of wealthy people have made war on American ideals. By weaponizing language and promoting false history they have led us into authoritarianism -- creating a disaffected population and then promising to recreate an imagined past where those people could feel important again.

MARCH 14TH | 6:30PM–8:00PM | HARVARD HALL

The combination of parenthood and politics has often been met with skepticism and doubt - especially for women. Join us for an exclusive and insightful fireside chat in Harvard Hall with Former Acting Governor Jane Swift, as she discusses the barriers she broke by becoming the 69th lieutenant governor from 1999 to 2003 and acting governor from 2001 to 2003 for Massachusetts, her time as CEO of Middlebury Interactive Languages and becoming president and executive director of LearnLaunch. This intimate conversation led by former Board of Governors member, Katherine Craven Kryzanski '94, will also dive into Swift's personal life and philanthropic work.

The Women

MARCH 25TH | 7:00AM–8:00AM | VIRTUAL

The Women by Kristin Hannah follows the twenty-year-old nursing student Frances “Frankie” McGrath as she grows from a girl to a woman during the time of the Vietnam War. When her brother ships out to serve in Vietnam, she joins the Army Nurse Corps and follows his path.

But war is just the beginning for Frankie and her veteran friends. The real battle lies in coming home to a changed and divided America, to angry protesters, and to a country that wants to forget Vietnam. The Women is the story of one woman gone to war, but it shines a light on all women who put themselves in harm’s way and whose sacrifice and commitment to their country has too often been forgotten.
