Page 1

PRESIDENT’S LETTER

Dear Fellow Members,

We are back! The fall is in full swing at the HCB and the University. It has been wonderful to see many of you at our events both at the clubhouse and on campus during September. October promises to be even busier with new member experiences and the return of popular offerings. Please check our app and website for a dynamic calendar of upcoming events. Speaking of our website, we will be launching an improved version of the club website later this month. Many thanks to all involved who worked on improving this facet of the HCB member experience.

A new team member has joined the HCB staff, Katerina Reilly. Katerina is our Member Engagement Manager and works with our Member Experience Team. She brings her knowledge and expertise to us after working at the Harvard Business School and Tiffany’s. Katerina will be focused on working with our Special Interest Groups as well as member events, marketing and member relations. Welcome Katerina!

As we move into FY 2025, the Board of Governors has asked our executive management team to use their expertise to implement more ways to provide value to our HCB membership. We will be making enhancements in our culinary and service offerings in Veritas Lounge, Member Commons and ClubPub. We will also be enhancing your experience as you enter our clubhouse. Areas of focus will be our front desk, first floor foyer and the rear entrance.

Our new agreement with the Harvard Club of New York has fostered a robust uptick in members for the HCNY visiting our clubhouse. Besides business trips, they are in Boston to reconnect with the University for athletic events, reunions, alumni boards and other activities. I’ve had the pleasure meeting quite a few of them while at our clubhouse and are very appreciative of our arrangement. I hope you get an opportunity to welcome them in the spirit of “One Harvard” when they are in town.

Since 1990, the Harvard Alumni Association (HAA) has bestowed the HAA Awards to distinguished alumni in recognition of their extraordinary service to Harvard University through leadership and engagement activities Continuing this tradition, the HAA has announced six recipients of the 2024 HAA Awards: Lewis “Lew” Auerbach AB ’63, AM ’64; Maria Carolina V. Dominguez AMP ’12; Matthew G. Hegarty AB ’82; Young Joon Kim JD ’83; Maiya Williams Verrone AB ’84; and John J. West Jr. MBA ’95. Lew, Maria, Matt, Young and John are members of the HCB. Congratulations to all of you and thank you for your service.

The party of the year will soon be upon us, the Member Appreciation Gala on November 2. If you have not already registered, please do so, you won’t want to miss the fun. We have the perfect way to get ready for the Gala, the HCB Head of the Charles Regatta Challenge. Row the length of the Head of the Charles from anywhere in the world, between October 1 to October 21. Since 1965, Harvard teams have been racing in the HOCR and now it’s your turn.

Speaking of Harvard teams, come by the club to watch Harvard Athletics in action both our ClubPub and the Veritas Lounge. Harvard University has the largest Division 1 collegiate sports program in the country, so there’s plenty of action to enjoy and cheer the Crimson to victory.

Many thanks to all of you for choosing to be members of our beloved Club. As a member of the greatest alumni network in the world, thank you for filling our Club with a spirit of unity and congeniality, respect and kindness. Your loyalty and support make us thrive as a community, onward together. If you have questions or suggestions, please contact me directly at president@harvardclub.com.

Best regards,

Marcus O. P. DeFlorimonte gb ’95, pmd President, Harvard Club of Boston Go Crimson! One Harvard!

The Everything War

OCTOBER 11TH | 8:00AM–9:00AM | VIRTUAL

The Everything War by Dana Mattolini exposes how Amazon was driven by a competitive edge to dominate every industry it entered, bulldozed all who stood in its way, reshaped the retail landscape, transformed how Wall Street evaluates companies, and altered the very nature of the global economy. It has come to control most of online retail, and uses its own sellers’ data to compete with them through Amazon’s own private label brands. Millions of companies and governmental agencies use AWS, paying hefty fees for the service. And, the company has purposefully avoided collecting taxes for years, exploited partners, and even copied competitors - leveraging its power to extract whatever it can, at any cost. It has continued to gain market share in disparate areas, from media to logistics and beyond. Most companies dominate one or two industries; Amazon now leads in several. And all of this was by design.

The Everything War is the definitive, inside story of how it grew into one of the most powerful and feared companies in the world – and why this lawsuit opens a window into the most consequential business story of our times.
