PRESIDENT’S LETTER
Dear Fellow Members,
Thank you to all who attended our 116th Annual Meeting and Dinner. The night was one of enjoyment and fellowship. A heartfelt thank you to Reverend Amy Norton ‘dv 16 for her service on the Board of Governors. We look forward to ongoing contributions to our club community as you begin your service on the Nominating Committee. Congratulations to Bithiah Carter ‘exu 01 on being elected to our Board of Governors. You are a wonderful addition to our club leadership team, and we look forward to your contributions through your time and talent. BOG member, David Rodriguez ‘Y 12 was elected Secretary and is now a member of the Executive Committee. Edward M. Many thanks to Dean Hopi Hoekstra for joining us and providing an update on current events and sharing her journey throughout higher education and Harvard. Kudos to Elizabeth Micci, Ed.L.D. 18 for leading an engaging discussion with Dean Hoekstra. The evening would not have been a success without the leadership of our General Manager, Steve Cummings, along with the event planning and execution of our Member Experience team, led by Becky Blaeser ’98 and our entire hospitality and culinary team. Last but not least, kudos to BOG members Andy Freed ’90, ks’94 and HAA Executive Director Sarah Karmon for their efforts and support. Bravo to all involved.
May at the Harvard Club of Boston is an exciting and pivotal time in our community. Each year the convocation of the next generation of Harvard influencers is our opportunity to welcome fresh faces, diverse personalities, and new voices into the club. I want to personally invite the Class of 2024 to be active members and tell you that you matter here. We want you to feel excited not only to attend events but feel confident that your participation in all our activities is necessary for our incredible club to thrive. Additionally, I have a message for the Class of 2023 who are finishing up their first year with us. Stay and grow with us. The energy you have brought to the community has been fantastic and we want to see you for years to come. Take full advantage of the diverse programming and experiences we offer. Stay engaged and participate in club activities. You all matter and we are stronger because of you!
We look forward to welcoming the University’s new alumni to the Harvard Family at commencement and reconnecting with fellow alums through reunions and other gatherings. The Class of 2024 both College and Graduate Schools receive a one-year complementary membership to the HCB. You will see their faces this month. Let’s embrace these new members and let them know that they belong in HCB community. `
Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month is celebrated in May. This annual monthlong event is an opportunity to celebrate the many contributions and achievements of the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community. Here are a few ways to celebrate AAPI month.
A reminder - the Harvard Alumni Association Nominating Committee released its slate of candidates for the spring 2024 elections of new members to the Harvard Board of Overseers and elected directors of the Harvard Alumni Association. The HCB has fellow three members that have been nominated as candidates. Scott Mead ’77 and Tim Ritchie MPA ’98 are candidates for Overseer and Madeleine Mejia Ed.M. ’00 is a candidate for elected director for the HAA. The voting website will be available from April 1 through 5:00PM (EDT) on May 14, 2024.
Congratulations to HCB members Scott Abell and Lee Pelton! The Harvard Alumni Association has announced that Scott A. Abell ’72, Katherine N. Lapp, and M. Lee Pelton, Ph.D. ’84, will receive the 2024 Harvard Medal. Alumni, former faculty and staff, and members of organizations affiliated with the University are eligible for consideration. The medals will be presented to recipients on Harvard Alumni Day on May 31.
When you receive your bill from April this month, you will see the Higginson 1908 Foundation Voluntary Assessment on your statement. The work of the Foundation provides the means in our efforts to be altruistic, which is one of our goals in the HCB Vision Statement. Thank you in advance for your kindness and generosity.
Many thanks to all of you for choosing to be members of our beloved Club. As a member of the greatest alumni network in the world, thank you for filling our Club with a spirit of unity and congeniality, respect, and kindness. Elected Full Members for March & April 2024:
Harvard Graduate School of Design
Dear Harvard Club of Boston Membership:
Club leadership and its managerial staff are always challenged with improving the “value proposition”. However, in times of labor shortages and other inflationary pressures, it becomes extremely challenging.
As Club professionals, we know that dues increases are not something its members look forward to, but it is the appropriate response when there are inflationary pressures.
From 2019 to 2023, the all-food Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose by 25%—a higher increase than the all-items CPI, which grew 19.2% over the same period. Like many businesses, private clubs have been faced with increases in insurance, wages & benefits, and tackling deferred maintenance at a time when construction and related costs have increased dramatically.
Cutting of expenses can be a tactic to curb inflationary pressures but we believe its impact will affect the “member experience”, which ultimately leads to a decline in the Clubs Value Proposition.
How has the Harvard Club of Boston addressed these issues? By investing in our Facility, Services, Programming and Technology while limiting price increases in dues, food, beverage and events. In addition, we have continued to review our value proposition and improved it with the addition of:
• The Member Commons-third floor
• Re-concepting our Veritas Lounge (summer 2024)
• An extension of our liquor license which will allow outside dining to continue after the City of Boston eventually removes the Covid 19 Temporary Permits (fall 2024 or spring 2025)
• Changed the value proposition for member events investing over $300,000 annually to have exceptional experiences for our members while decreasing the price of these events (ie, complimentary and decreased event pricing) and/ or enhancing events with creative décor, food and beverage offerings, and unique speakers that have dramatically increased member attendance
• Enhancements to our overnight guest rooms
• And most recently, adding a food delivery program in the ClubPub through the use of our Club app. You simply place the order, the food is prepared in Veritas kitchen, and a food runner will deliver to your table. While the menu is limited, there is a wide selection. It is currently in its pilot stage but we are confident it will be appreciated by members who utilize the ClubPub and would enjoy a salad or a sandwich.
All things considered, this has been an interesting time to be a Private Club Leader. We have a fantastic team and we are dedicated to advancing the Harvard Club of Boston Value Proposition
Please feel free to contact me directly at scummings@harvardclub.com or (617) 450-8400 if I can be of service to you!
Sincerely,
Steven P. Cummings, CCM, CCE General ManagerWATCH THE FIRESIDE CHAT

MAY 8TH | 7:30AM–9:30AM | PRESIDENT'S ROOM
Get your day started with a continental breakfast and a spirited conversation with Professor Ned Hall, Director of Undergraduate Studies, Norman E. Vuilleumier Professor of Philosophy at Harvard. How – if at all – should colleges and universities regulate speech within their communities? That question is as important as it is difficult to productively discuss. Professor Hall will suggest that we take a step back and ask three interconnected questions: What’s the point of having colleges and universities at all? (Why think our society would be impoverished, even desperately so, without them?) What are the different things we can mean by “freedom of speech”? What are the different forms that “regulation” of speech can take?
Price per person: $15 per person (plus *Club Fee and Tax) Price includes a continental breakfast, coffee/tea and select juices.
