Final Letter as Editor

Dear Harvey Community,

It’s impossible to sum up the last seven years into one letter. As I sit down to write my final words as editor-in-chief and layout editor, I am filled with a mix of emotions - sadness at leaving a role I cherished and excitement for what the future holds. Serving as your editor has been an incredible honor, filled with ups and downs that have helped shape me into who I am today.

For as long as I can remember, I have been interested in the news. When I was a little girl, I used to have my brother “borrow” my mother’s iPad to record “The Emma Show,” where I would report on the breaking news that occurred between my dolls and stuffed animals. My ambition to be part of the journalistic world stemmed there, and I didn’t even know it.

Then high school came around, where The Pulse offered me the opportunity to develop my skills as a budding journalist. Initially, I hesitated to join The Pulse because my brother had been the previous editor, and I was afraid that others might assume I was merely copying his path without establishing my own identity. However, if there is one lesson I learned from Harvey, it is to never let the opinions of others dictate your actions. I decided

to take a leap of faith, listened to my heart, and joined The Pulse, where I was welcomed with open arms.

This experience pushed me beyond my comfort zone. For a majority of the time, I, along with other staff writers, conducted interviews with teachers, tackled sensitive political topics, and wrote sports articles, all while wearing a COVID-19 face mask and maintaining a six-feet distance. However, I couldn’t do it alone.

I want to express my sincere gratitude to our remarkable sports editor, Dan Gasch, for his unwavering resilience, dedication, and hard work at The Pulse. Your passion and commitment to your role have not gone unnoticed, and I am immensely grateful for the energy and enthusiasm you bring to each article. With every article you have edited, you have transported us into the world of athleticism, evoking a profound appreciation for the power of sports. Thank you for bringing the sports section of The Pulse alive and keeping your bias toward the New England Patriots out of every article. You make every sports article a home run (I’m so funny).

Additionally, I would like to express my deepest appreciation toward The Pulse faculty advisor, Ms. Holmes. Just like a Disney character who brings magic to every scene, you have infused our journalism journey with an enchanting touch. Your guidance and expertise have been instrumental in shaping our writing skills, journalistic integrity, and teamwork. I speak for the entire Pulse staff when I sincerely thank you for all your hard work and support throughout our Harvey journey.

Lastly, I would like to show my appreciation to the unsung hero of The Pulse, Mr. DelCampo, for his extensive edits and for ensuring that The Pulse uses the proper AP style.

For the next four years, I will continue my journalism career at The University of Richmond (Go Spiders!). Without Harvey and The Pulse’s extraordinary influence on me, I would have never been able to obtain this opportunity.

I hope that our readers have enjoyed reading The Pulse and will continue to do so in the future. I am confident in the future of The Pulse, and please know I will be its biggest cheerleader!

My time with The Pulse has been both an education and a journey. During this voyage, I’ve learned valuable communication and leadership skills that I hope will make the next chapter of my life meaningful and rewarding. It is my profound wish that The Pulse continues to thrive in the Harvey community while my journalistic career moves beyond the four corners of my mother’s iPad.

With love and admiration,

Tribute

Maury Leone’s Memory at Harvey

“That’s who he was. A gentle man and a gentleman. And it was really a gift.” —

Married to his wife, Mrs. Donna Leone, in June ‘81, Mr. Maury Leone was a Trustee Emeritus at The Harvey School and a beloved friend to many. As vicechair of the board and chair of the Head of School Search Committee, Mr. Leone was not only a cherished member of Harvey, but also a highly esteemed executive at Merrill Lynch, the American investment and management division of Bank of America. The Pulse had the privilege of speaking with Donna Leone to learn about Mr. Leone’s life, which was filled with loving moments and meaningful connections.

Mr. Leone was born and raised in Astoria, Queens. His father was from a suburb of Bari, Italy, and spoke little to no English upon his arrival to the United States. He found work as an Italian immigrant until he could bring his beloved mother, brother, and two sisters to join him in the Bronx.

Virginia Holmes

Mr. Leone went to Manhattan College and started his work for Merrill Lynch, which he pursued until the time he graduated and became a full-time employee. When Mrs. Leone met Mr. Leone, he was working at an office in Brooklyn. She told The Pulse that the whole family was thrilled with his career, stating, “It made his father so proud that his son became a vice president of the company, had all these accolades, and worked for chairs of the firm. It just brought him so much joy that his son was this respected executive at Merrill Lynch.”

When Mr. Leone passed, his memory was seen in the same light. Mrs. Leone would frequently hear stories about the work Mr. Leone did: “We were together for 40 years, and I knew most of his contacts at Merrill Lynch, the people that worked for him, and the people he worked for,” she said. “I couldn’t believe the letters from people that said ‘you may not have known this,’ and they would go into a story about how he touched their life.”

Not only was Mr. Leone deeply involved in his professional life, but he also made sure to actively participate in the lives of his children, Michael (’04) and Alessandra (’08), who were students at Harvey. His legacy continues through the work of his son, Michael, who serves as one of the coaches of the Harvey boys

rugby team. Michael Leone told The Pulse, “My dad would be very proud of what my mother, my sister, and I have done.”

As a dedicated Harvey parent, Mr. Leone was particularly engaged in supporting his children’s involvement in sports. Whether it was attending games, cheering from the sidelines, or volunteering his time, he was a familiar face at Harvey’s athletic events. His passion for his children’s pursuits extended beyond the field as he consistently encouraged them to pursue their dreams and excel academically.

In the wake of Mr. Maury Leone’s passing, his legacy radiates with an unwavering brilliance as Mrs. Leone became a witness to the countless anecdotes recounting the profound impact of her late husband’s endeavors. With a tenure of 40 years at Merrill Lynch, Mr. Leone’s formidable presence resonated among his colleagues and superiors as his nurturing touch left an indelible mark on their lives.

Mr. Leone was a personal and professional mentor to many. When he retired from Merrill Lynch, he formed an executive coaching company to help other professionals reach greater heights in their own careers. Mrs. Leone told The Pulse that he would often say, “I’m not going to charge for this one,” and he went above and beyond for those around him.

Mrs. Leone continued, “That’s who he was. A gentle man and a gentleman. He was a mentor and a person who stepped up and offered his services, no strings attached … if he touched one person, that was one life that could be changed forever.”

Mrs. Leone also said, “When he passed, there was an outpouring of sentiment … Bill Knauer, along with many others, said even in the most difficult situations, Maury could deliver very difficult news. Even if he was devastated, he did it with such grace and kindness that people stayed in touch with him, and he always found a way to turn a crisis into an opportunity. And that was really a gift.”

The Pulse was fortunate enough to learn more about Mr. Maury Leone from Mr. Knauer and Mr. Lazzaro, as well. Mr. Knauer stated, “Maury was a kind, truly good man, full of warmth and generosity of spirit, and he is still missed in the Harvey community.”

Similarly, Mr. Lazzaro said, “Maury was an extraordinary

member of our Harvey community who left a lasting impact due to his kindness, generosity, and spirit. As a parent, Maury wanted the best for his children and the school. As a trustee, he was thoughtful, and his intelligence was present in many critical decisions. He is missed dearly in our community.”

Mr. Leone’s dedication to Harvey extended to his philanthropic endeavors. Recognizing the importance of education and the transformative power it holds, the Leone family established a Harvey scholarship fund in Mr. Leone’s name. The scholarship not only honors Mr. Leone’s memory, but it also embodies his spirit of kindness, generosity, and commitment to the betterment of others.

Mrs. Leone told The Pulse about the genesis of the scholarship, stating, “Shortly after he passed, we were talking about how our family could harness our grief and make it something that honors someone you love so much but also encompasses your life work. I truly felt we ought to honor Maury in a way that every parent wants their child to become, not only in the education you receive, but also the educators you encounter. One of the first scholarship recipients has already proven to be incredibly successful at Harvey. She wrote us a beautiful letter and really embodies what Harvey’s mission is. To see what she’s done in this short period of time is astonishing.”

The memory of Maury Leone continues to shine brightly at Harvey as his selflessness, compassion, and unwavering dedication to his family, community, and the pursuit of excellence are remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His remarkable ability to touch lives and make a difference, both professionally and personally, serves as an enduring reminder of the profound impact one individual can have on the people around him.

Israel Adesanya has staked his claim as one of the greatest middleweights to ever fight in the UFC, becoming the champion of the 185-pound division twice since 2018. Throughout his career, Adesanya has racked up 22 wins while utilizing his experience in kickboxing to become one of the most dominant strikers in MMA history.

Adesanya was born in Nigeria July 22, 1989. As a child, he was first introduced to martial arts when he participated in Taekwondo. Although Adesanya was fascinated by Taekwondo, his mother eventually pulled him out of the sport in fear that he would suffer a serious injury.

Adesanya first competed in kickboxing, where he used his long reach and Taekwondo style kicks to his advantage.

Israel Adesanya made his UFC debut Feb. 10, 2018, against former middleweight contender Rob Wilkinson. Adesanya finished the fight by TKO in the second round. He went on to win his next four straight fights against highly credited middleweights. The win streak included a victory over middleweight legend Anderson Silva.

Adesanya was rewarded for his win streak with his first title shot. On April 13, 2019, Adesanya fought Kelvin Gastelum for the Interim Middleweight Championship. The fight was very close, but Adesanya picked up the win via TKO in the fifth and final round. Before the start of the fifth round, Adesanya created one of the most iconic moments of his career. When stared across the octagon and

Taking Over the UFC in Style

into the eyes of Gastelum, Adesanya stated, “You can’t beat me. I’m ready to die.”

After becoming the interim champ, Adesanya went on to face Robert Whittaker, the undisputed middleweight champ at the time. The contest took place at UFC 243 in Melbourne, Australia.

According to MMAWeekly. com, as soon as the first round began, Whittaker came after Adesanya, looking to walk him down and take away his space. The strategy made sense, as Adesanya is a long and tall fighter who often lands his best strikes from range. However, this plan of attack did not pay off, as Adesanya patiently waited for an opening. In the last few seconds of the first round, Adesanya found an opening, connecting with a right hook that floored Whittaker.

In the second minute of round two, Adesanya connected on another devastating punch that again brought Whittaker to the canvas. After Adesanya landed a few follow-up shots, the referee intervened, handing Adesanya the knockout win.

After becoming the undisputed middleweight champion, Adesanya went on to defend his belt twice before moving up to the 205-pound weight class (light heavyweight) in an attempt to become a “double champ.” Unfortunately, the fight did not go his way, as he was defeated by Jan Błachowicz. Despite the loss, Adesanya did not have any regret for attempting to claim the light heavyweight strap, stating in a postfight interview, “It didn’t go exactly the way I wanted it to go, but dare to

be great.”

After the one-off fight at 205, Adesanya went back to middleweight, where he defended his belt three more times.

During this win streak, Adesanya’s most notable fight was a rematch with former middleweight champ Robert Whittaker. The fight was much more competitive than their first bout, with Whittaker clearly making adjustments to his game plan for the second fight. Although it was a close fight, Adesanya came out with the win and retained his belt.

As reported by MMA Fighting, on Nov. 12, 2022, Adesanya took on former kickboxing rival Alex Pereira at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Before transitioning to MMA, the two fought twice under kickboxing rules, with Pereira taking the win in both contests. The history between these fighters gave many fans and analysts the belief that Pereira would prove to be a formidable opponent for Adesanya. Pereira lived up to those expectations and became the first man to beat Adesanya inside the distance under MMA rules.

Adesanya chose not to dwell on the loss and quickly got back to training in preparation for his next fight. Not long after, UFC president Dana White announced that on April 8, UFC 287 would be headlined by a Adesanya/Pereira rematch.

The stakes for this fight were very high, because Adesanya would likely have trouble finding a way into another title shot if defeated, as it

different story on draft night, because everything will most likely change. With the first overall pick in the draft, the Carolina Panthers selected QB Bryce Young, which was not that much of a surprise. Young’s ability to scramble and throw accurately down the field is one of the reasons why he was drafted first overall.

The next pick in the draft was by the Seattle Seahawks, who had a need at the cornerback position. They selected Devon Witherspoon out of Illinois, a great corner who brings great defensive ability to the Seahawks squad.

would technically be his fourth loss to Pereira. The pressure motivated Adesanya, as he trained incredibly hard for the fight and successfully defeated his rival by second round knockout.

The finish was spectacular, as Adesanya baited Pereira into hunting for a knockout and lowered his defense in the process. Right as Pereira closed in on him, Adesanya countered with a huge right hand that jolted Pereira back, and after an equally powerful follow up right hand, Pereira was unconscious.

In his post-fight interview, Adesanya stated “I hope everyone watching can experience this level of happiness at least once in their life.” During the post-fight news conference, Dana White stated, “(Adesanya) is a true fighter…he’ll fight anyone.” White has often praised Adesanya for his high activity and love for the game.

After the results of UFC 287, Adesanya has proven why he will go down as one of greatest mixed martial artists of all time.

The NFL draft is held every year, when college players can secure their dream of making it to the NFL. This year, the draft was on April 27, 2023, and it ended on April 29. This year’s draft featured many high profile players that bring great athleticism to any team looking to draft them.

Some of the top players this year come from universities like Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State, TCU, and more. According to the CBS Sports Mock Draft, players that were projected to go top 5 in the draft included Bryce Young, C.J Stroud, Tyree Richardson, Anthony Richardson, and Will Anderson Jr.

Although mock drafts can be helpful in projecting draft picks, it is a

With the No. 2 overall pick, Houston Texans selected QB C.J. Stroud out of Ohio State. Stroud has great speed and throwing ability, and he will provide a huge boost for the Texans this season. The Texans also traded for the No. 3 pick, which was originally owned by the Arizona Cardinals. With the third pick, they drafted edge rusher Will Anderson Jr. out of Alabama. Anderson Jr. is arguably the best pass rusher in the draft, and he will be an improvement to a Texans team that was not very good defensively in the 2022 season.

The fourth pick of the draft was by the Indianapolis Colts, who selected 6’4 QB from Florida Anthony Richardson. Some NFL scouts consider Richardson the most athletic QB in the draft ever. Richardson has been compared to former MVP QB Cam Newton, who out of college had a similar build and athleticism as Richardson.

According to ESPN.com, the first offensive lineman came off the board at sixth overall by the Arizona Cardinals, where they drafted 6’6 OL, Paris Johnson, who was a beast at Ohio State. His size and strength is why he was drafted so high in the draft, and he will provide a huge boost for the Cardinals next season, who needed offensive linemen.

Next on the clock was the Las Vegas Raiders, who selected Defensive End Tyree Wilson. Wilson was a projected top five pick but fell to the Raiders at the seventh pick in the draft. Wilson has great speed and technique at the defensive end position. He and Max Crosby will create a great defensive duo on the Raiders.

Raiders super fan and Harvey senior Razi Tanksley stated that he is “hyped that the raiders drafted Wilson, as he will provide a day one impact, and Raiders fans can expect him to be an important contributor.”

Jumping to the 14th pick in the draft, the Pittsburgh Steelers were on the clock after trading up and drafted Offensive Linemen, Broderick Jones. Jones is a 6’5 offensive beast, who will help the Steelers protect their young QB, Kenny Pickett. According to Steelers GM Omar Khan, he said, “We just felt like Broderick Jones was a Steeler.” It goes to show that the Steelers are ecstatic about their pick and ready to see him play.

According to NFL.com, The New England Patriots traded back to the 17th pick in the draft, where they selected arguably the best Cornerback in the draft, Christian Gonzalez. Gonzales was a huge steal at pick 17 for the Pats, and Patriots fans are excited for the future. Gonzalez brings great IQ to the Patriots squad and is a great athlete. Gonzalez will make a day- one impact on the Patriots, who love bringing in tall outside DBs.

This year’s NFL draft had an immense amount of talent, and hopefully all of the draftees play to their potential to help their respective teams win a championship.

DC Under Gunn: What’s Next for the DCU

After almost a decade of highs, lows, behind-the-scenes conflicts, and constant changes in direction, DC’s attempts to match Marvel will enter a new chapter. With Marvel and DC veteran James Gunn at the helm, the franchise once known as the DC Extended Universe will be rebranded and relaunched with a new slate, new characters, and new creatives, leaving the old vision of Zack Snyder in the past and moving to the future of the brand-new DC Universe.

But before Gunn is able to launch his plan for DC, there are three remaining projects from the old DCEU that have already been finished and will be released before year’s end. The first of these is “The Flash,” releasing June 16, 2023. Under-fire actor Ezra Miller will reprise their role as The Flash for potentially the last time. In addition to Miller, the film also stars both Ben Affleck and Micheal Keaton, reprising their roles as Batman from the DCEU and from the 1989 “Batman” film, respectively.

The next film being released, on Aug. 18, 2023, is “Blue Beetle.” The first superhero film with a Latino lead, Xolo Maridueña stars as the Jaime Reyes version of the character, who, according to James Gunn, may well

stick around for the new DCU. Finally, “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” will be released Dec. 20, 2023, and possibly will be the final outing for Jason Momoa as Aquaman.

As we enter 2024, there are two projects that will bridge the gap between the DCEU and the DCU. The first of these is “Creature Commandos,” an animated series releasing on the streaming service MAX. Written by Gunn, this series will star Frank Grillo, David Harbour, Indrina Varma, Zoe Chao, Alan Tudyk, and Sean Gunn. Despite this being animated, all the actors involved will also play their characters in live-action appearances. The second series, “Waller,” will be live-action and star Viola Davis as Amanda Waller once again in a story written by Christal Henry.

Also, in 2024 there will be two projects released under a new label, DC Elseworlds, that will include all projects set outside the main DC Universe. One of them is “The Penguin,” starring Colin Ferrell as the titular character from the universe first introduced in “The Batman.” The second is DC’s only feature film of 2024, “Joker: Folie A Deux,” a sequel to 2019’s awardwinning thriller starring Joaquin

Phoenix as The Joker and Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn. Other projects under the DC Elseworlds label include “Superman and Lois” on the CW, “Teen Titans Go!” on Cartoon Network, and “Harley Quinn” on MAX.

2025 will mark the true beginning of the DCU with its first feature film, “Superman Legacy,” releasing July 11. Directed and written by James Gunn, this film will notably not star Henry Cavill’s version of the character, instead focusing on a brand-new version of Superman in his early days as a hero as he learns to balance his alien heritage and Kansas upbringing. On Oct. 3, we’ll see another DC Elseworlds project, as Robert Pattinson returns in “The Batman Part II,” currently the final DC project with a release date.

However, there are still seven more projects, both movies and shows, known to be in development as part of the DCU’s Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters. On the big screen, the next film will be titled “The Authority,” which revolves around a group of heroes willing to break all the rules to make the world a better place. It’s been rumored that “Kingsmen” director Matthew Vaughn is trying to get this film off the ground. It will be followed

Chess.com Is Growing

by “The Brave and the Bold,” following a new Batman and his quest to raise his son Damien Wayne. Then we’ll see “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow,” an epic sci-fi film chronicling the life of Supergirl, and “Swamp Thing,” a horror homage directed and written by James Mangold.

Finally, on the series side of the DCU coming to MAX, we will first see “Lanterns,” an epic, “True Detective” style series about two Green Lanterns uncovering an ancient mystery that will tie into the larger DCU. We’ll also get “Booster Gold,” based around a time-traveling loser who becomes a hero in the present, and “Paradise Lost,” focusing on the ancient warrior Amazons. With the fate of Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman still unknown, this series will explore the wars of her people’s past in a “Game of Thrones” style fantasy series.

And that’s only the beginning, as many more unknown projects are also in the works in the fields of gaming, animation, television, and film. These projects will shepherd the DCU into the future until Gunn’s watchful eye and the potential of the universe is brighter than it ever was.

Over the past few years, chess has emerged as one of the most popular online games. You can find the game on a browser or in the app store. Chess is a very special game that many really didn’t play about until this online version started to blow up on all social medias, making people want to start.

There are well-known streamers such as Gotham Chess, Magnus Carlsen, and Hikarui, which are very entertaining, and chess streamers love to watch those channels. Magnus and Hikarui are some of the best and have even been world champions.

A big reason why chess has grown to where it is now is social media, according to The New York Times article “Chess Is Booming” by Greg Keener. Also, TikTok has a heavy influence, because everyone spends so much time on it, and they send clips of the best moves or games they have played. Doing this gets people interested in the game, as they want to match that amazing move someone else did.

The reason why it is also popular is that since it’s online, there are more features that you can do on a phone than on a chess board. For example, you can premove, which is where you place a piece where you want before your turn comes up. Also, there is a bot that helps you after a game, giving you feedback. It shows you what moves were good, bad, or excellent.

The best part is you will always be matched up against someone with the same Elo (a rating system in chess). Elo provides you with your

ranking, and depending on if you win or lose the game, your Elo goes up or down. The best Elo is in the high 2000s or even 3000, which many in chess have not achieved.

Once you reach the high Elo, you are named grandmaster, which is very hard to reach. Most people who play often never get to that level but hope one day that they will. People become grandmasters because they make moves that they don’t usually play, trying to confuse their opponents at all times.

A key to successful chess matches online are openings. An opening is what you do to start a game, developing all your pieces so they are set up for the rest of the match. There are so many different openings that you can do that all are unique.

The most common opening in all of chess is moving the pawn to E4 and E5. That means you move the pawn two spots up on the E file, and the same thing happens with your opponent. After

this, there are lots of moves you can do, but most people start out in this way.

One of the best features on chess.com is the special game modes that they have created. Obviously, there is standard chess, but there is so much more on chess.com. You can play duck chess, which is hilariously fun. Duck chess is just standard chess, but there is a duck that sits on the board, and you can’t move your pieces through it. So, it pretty much creates a block on the board that just annoys your opponent at all times. There is also four-person chess, which is four people playing at the same time on one board trying to eliminate each other.

There is standard fourperson chess but also special versions of four-person chess.

Chess on a board is entertaining, but chess.com provides a different experience. Hopefully, you all go and play chess online so you can realize how fun it is!

A writers’ strike is in action all over the nation, as writers for film and television have stopped their work to picket against the networks in the Hollywood empire. Writers want an increase in pay within their contracts and want a guarantee that Artificial Intelligence (AI) will not be used to write scripts.

The writers guild is the official union for screenwriters, and every member of the guild has laid down their labor to picket for their livelihood. Writers all across the guild want a guarantee that the use of AI for drafts will not pass. If AI is used, it means thousands of screenwriters will be laid off.

The guild has support from all, if not most, unions in the country. SAG-AFTRA, the actors union, and DGA, the directors guild, are fully supporting the writers by showing up to picket. Celebrities, such as Pete Davidson, have been supporting the protest efforts, too. Davidson, an actor and comedian, has been seen handing out pizzas to writers who were striking in Brooklyn.

The local 399 Teamster Union in Hollywood, California is led by Lyndsey Dougherty. She strictly

Writers’ Strike

told her union to not cross the picket line and that those who do will be immediately expelled from the union.

According to the Los Angeles Times, “We cannot afford a strike.” Post-pandemic inflation and politics have been very destructive to the film industry. The Los Angeles Times and multiple other news sources are in a panic, stating how a strike would make the industry lose billions of dollars.

As reported by NBC News, Hollywood lost $2.1 billion as a result of the strike in 2007. The strike in 2007 lasted 100 days, but the financial impact to Hollywood studios was not significant compared to how much money they have.

On May 15, writers from the East Coast hit Radio City Hall, where Netflix rented space to discuss the fall schedule. Ironically, there is no fall schedule because of the strike.

The guild rented a rat inflatable named Scabby, a longtime symbol of labor protests. Also, the rat represents all the CEOs in Hollywood not paying their writers.

On Sunday, May 21, I picketed at Boston University with my

father, Jorge Zamacona, who is a writer and producer, my uncle, Brad Winters, who is also a writer, and my younger cousin Luke. Warner Brothers CEO David Zaslaz, who made $39 million last year, gave a commencement speech at graduation.

Once we got to Boston, we signed in with the picket captain and chose our signs. We were briefed and told to not stand on the brick pavement, which was BU property. We had support from most civilians. Even the moto cops revved and waved.

During Zaslav’s arrival, his driver and bodyguard opened his sport coat, displaying a gun to the picket line in a very arrogant manner.

Outside the VIP entrance, writers, actors, and supporters picketed for hours until his exit. Inside the arena, Boston University students chanted, “Pay your writers,” and they booed most of his speech. Scabby was present during the picket. A plane with a banner that said, “ZASLAV, PAY YOUR WRITERS”

flew over Boston, as well.

I held a sign in solidarity with the writers and against Zaslav. I also held up a guild sign. The signs

Chief executive Anthony Ledru and executive vice president Alexandre Arnault monitored final preparations. “We asked ourselves lots of questions going into this,” Ledru told The New York Times. He continued, “Are we going to change the feel? Do we respect tradition? We decided to do both.”

Tiffany was no longer aspirational among new generations in comparison to European fashion labels. He told Fast Company Magazine, “Some brands are over-present, which can damage their brand, but others are too pure and aren’t part of the conversation,” he says. “Tiffany wasn’t part of the cultural zeitgeist.”

said, “Pay your writers! Honk if you want new shows!”

It was a really unforgettable experience to see the passionate men and women standing in the boiling sun to protect their passions.

The Fifth Avenue store, known as “The Landmark,” is unlike any other Tiffany & Co. location, reflecting the brand’s commitment to honor its rich heritage. Shoppers are greeted with a sense of opulence that is synonymous with the Tiffany & Co. brand, and the interior design is contemporarily curated to showcase the exquisite jewelry that Tiffany & Co. is famous for.

Upon entrance, shoppers see that the store has been refurbished to honor its original design, housing glass cases illuminated by a skylight that spans almost the entire room.

On the ground floor, the Manhattan skyline is projected on the walls, and, when switched off, double as mirrors. The 1940 design is revised to a now 10-story building, and an Elsa Peretti–inspired staircase

Tiffany revealed its renovation plans for its store back in 2018. Three years later, according to The Entrepreneur, French conglomerate Louis Vuitton acquired Tiffany for $15.8 billion, one of the largest deals in the luxury world and the largest American brand acquisition to date for Louis Vuitton.

Tiffany & Co. grossed $4 billion in sales in 2013, but then revenue started to fall in 2015, even as the industry grew. A senior research analyst told Fast Company Magazine, “Tiffany had fallen from a luxury brand into a jewelry retailer.” When Louis Vutton acquired the brand, CEO Bernard Arnault furthered on his quarter earnings call, “We came at an opportune time,” just as it had “stagnated.”

From Arnault’s perspective,

Arnault’s sentiments proved to be true. Tiffany’s earnings have doubled what they were before the acquisition, and the gain was mutual. According to Euromonitor, Tiffany was the No. 1 contributor to Louis Vutton’s growth, increasing the revenue up 18% to $11.35 billion.

Europe has produced numerous luxury brands that have withstood the test of time, such as Chanel, Hermès, and Loewe, but America has found it difficult to create a comparable high-end brand. Founded in 1838 by jeweler Charles Lewis Tiffany (1812-1902) on Broadway in New York, Tiffany & Co. is an exception. According to Arnault, Tiffany is the only American luxury brand, producing jewelry made in the world’s best studios.

Appointments are recommended to avoid wait times, and, if you require product services, book-

ing an appointment (in person or online) on the Tiffany & Co. website is mandatory. Shoppers are welcome to walk in during opening hours without an appointment, as the reopening of The Landmark is a much-anticipated event. Until the reopening, you can contact Tiffany & Co. at (800) 8433269 or book an appointment at their Soho, Hudson Yards, or Wall Street stores.

From Headlines to Courtrooms: Inside the Fox News Defamation Case

simply reporting claims made by Trump and his supporters. Thus, they are not liable.

Dominion Voting Systems sued Fox News for $1.6 billion after claiming that Fox repeatedly aired allegations that the company’s voting machines were rigged against former President Donald Trump in 2020, knowing that the accusations were false. However, the two entities settled, forcing Fox News to pay almost $800 million, making it one of the biggest financial settlements in a defamation case.

According to DominionVoting.com, Dominion Voting Systems Corporation is a company that produces and sells electronic voting hardware and software, including voting machines and tabulators, in Canada and the United States. Dominion, during the lengthy and embarrassing trial, produced numerous counts of evidence that prominent people at Fox stated false claims over the Trump election. Fox hosts, such as Lou Dobbs and Jeanine Pirro, are some of the many that endorsed false claims of election fraud.

Rebecca Tushnet, the Frank Stanton Professor of First Amendment Law at Harvard Law School, de-

scribed Dominion’ss evidence as a “very strong” filing that “clearly lays out the difference between what Fox was saying publicly and what top people at Fox were privately admitting.”

According to Politico, Dominion argued that one of the main motives for Fox reporting conspiracy theories was because there was a panic about losing viewers to rivals like Newsmax.

In response, Dominion stated that its brands and employees were constantly harassed by MAGA supporters. Due to this, they sought $1.6 billion in damages.

The challenging part of the case for Dominion was the libel law, which made it difficult for some plaintiffs to prove defamation by news outlets. They have to prove not only that the information reported was incorrect but also that the news organization acted with “reckless disregard” about whether it was true or not.

As reported by The New York Times, in response, Fox News stated they were

In pre-trial, Fox founder Rupert Murdoch was brought to the stand. Under oath, he admitted that the 2020 election, won by President Joseph Biden, was free and fair: “The election was not stolen.” Some other highlights include Tucker Carlson wishing for Trump to vanish from the national stage, even as he publicly embraced him: “I hate him passionately.”

Opening arguments were scheduled to start at around 1:30 p.m. After a twohour delay, Judge Eric Davis returned to stun a packed courtroom shortly before 4 p.m. and stated, “The parties have resolved their case.”

Fox stated they settled and agreed to pay $787.5 million, and there did not appear to be any provision in the settlement deal requiring any apology from Fox. While many news outlets report that this could economically hurt Fox, in their most quarterly earnings report, Fox claimed $14 billion in revenue last year.

One week after the settlement, Tucker Carlson, the highest-rated single host at Fox News, and Fox News split ways. Carlson propelled himself to stardom in recent years by being a top promoter of conspiracy theories and radical rhetoric used as evidence during the defamation case.

During the trial, several

counts of evidence of Carlson’s vulgar text messages in which he said he “hated [Donald] Trump passionately” and called Sidney Powell, a lawyer for the former president who was spreading false election information, a liar

According to the Wall Street Journal, Carlson found out about his firing 10 minutes before it was announced. Discussions of firing Carlson began when a lawsuit was filed by Abby Grossberg, a former senior booking producer on Carlson’s show, who claims she faced sexism and a hostile work environment.

However, the settlement with Dominion affirmed Rupert Murdoch’s son and Fox Corp CEO Lachlan Murdoch and Fox News CEO Suzanne Scott’s decision to fire Carlson. Fox said, “We thank him for his service to the network as a host and before that as a contributor.”

The settlement with Fox News sets legal history as one of the largest defamation payouts in American history. This could embolden Dominion as it continues to defend its reputation. The company has several pending cases against public figures, including Mike Lindell, the MyPillow executive, and news outlets likeNewsmax.

Movies in the Summer and Beyond

Delicious Chinese Food at P.F. Chang’s

P.F. Chang’s is a Chinese bistro chain restaurant that was founded in Scottsdale, Arizona, by Paul Flemin and Philip Chiang. Since 1993, P.F. Chang’s has been serving guests delicious Chineseinspired dishes. In the process, P.F. Chang’s has created a great environment that has become my favorite chain restaurant.

The first quarter of 2023 has already brought some majorsurprises and shocking moments for moviegoers around the world. Some unexpected films have opened to massive success, while others have crashed and burned. With the rest of the year set to bring a slew of entirely different movies, here is what to expect for the rest of 2023 at the movie theater.

Currently, in May, there are two major hits remaining on the calendar. The first is “Fast X,” opening May 19, the next installment in the action franchise starring Vin Diesel, John Cena, Jason Momoa, and Brie Larson. Then, May 26 will bring “The Little Mermaid,” the latest live- action reimaging of a Disney classic film, starring Halle Bailey as the titular mermaid and Melissa McCarthy as the villain Ursula.

June will open with a bang as “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” swings into theaters on June 2. The sequel to the 2018 animated classic is set to star Shameik Moore and Hailee Steinfeld on another journey through the multiverse. The following week will bring “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts,” the seventh installment in the Transformers franchise previously helmed by director Michaell Bay, while June 16 will bring two more hits: “The Flash,” a highly anticipated DC film, and “Elemental,” the latest animated offering from Pixar. The month will close out on June 30 with “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,” the final installment in the long-running series starring Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones.

Three more major hits are coming in July, the first being “Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning,” half of the two-part finale for the Tom Cruise-led spy franchise. Then, on July 21, we will see the showdown of the summer between “Oppenheimer,” directed by Christopher Nolan, and “Barbie,” directed by Greta Gerwig. Both these films boast Oscar-nominated directors and star-studded casts with the likes of Margot Robbie, Cillian Murphy, Ryan Gosling, and Robert Downey Jr., so it remains to be seen which one will come out on top.

August and September are set to be much smaller, with minor hits such as “The Meg 2,” the sequel to 2018’s monster movie, DC’s next superhero outing “Blue Beetle,” and the latest Agatha Christie adaptation, “A Haunting of Venice,” starring Kenneth Branagh.

October will open with two movies that may very well shock the world. The first is “Killer of the Flower Moon,” opening on Oct. 6, a three-and-a-half-hour epic directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Leonardo DiCaprio. On the same day, Sony will premiere “Kraven the Hunter,” their latest comic book film starring Aaron TaylorJohnson, which is already making history as the first Sony comicbook movie with an R-rating. As Halloween approaches, horror fans can look forward to “Saw X” and “Five Nights at Freddy’s” coming to theaters on Oct. 27.

November will mark perhaps the biggest month of the year, as four massive films will open in three consecutive weeks. Starting out on Nov. 3 is “Dune Part Two,” the sci-fi sequel starring Timothee Chalamet and Zendaya alongside Florence Pugh, Austin Butler, and Christopher Walken. On Nov. 10, Marvel will release their only remaining film of 2023, appropriately titled “The Marvels,” starring Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris, and Iman Vellani.

On Nov. 17, we will witness “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes,” the final Hunger Games film starring Rachel Zegler, Peter Dinklage, and Viola Davis. Finally, on Nov. 22, Disney’s “Wish,” their newest animated offering starring Oscar-winner Ariana DeBose and Chris Pine, will arrive alongside Apple’s “Napoleon,” directed by Ridley Scott and starring Joaquin Phoenix.

The final month of the year will bring the last few hits to theaters and beyond. First is “Wonka” on Dec. 15, starring Timothee Chalamet, followed by the final DCEU film “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” five days later. On Netflix, director Zack Snyder will release his anticipated sci-fi film “Rebel Moon,” and finally, on Christmas Day, Warner Brothers will release their Oscar contender, “The Color Purple.”

With all these various releases coming to theaters alongside countless others on streaming, 2023 is set to be a big year for movies as the industry finally recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic. Audiences will definitely have plenty to look forward to no matter what they’re interested in.

My family and I have been going to P.F. Chang’s for many years, and it has always been a fun and relaxed meal. Although you wouldn’t necessarily see P.F. Chang’s as a fancy restaurant that you would take your mother to on Mother’s Day or go to on your anniversary, it is the perfect spot for a Friday night dinner or Saturday lunch after a long hard week.

The closest P.F. Chang’s location for Harvey students is in White Plains, New York. The restaurant is located inside the Westchester Mall, giving you the perfect opportunity to enjoy the mall and walk around after your meal.

The P.F. Chang’s menu is loaded with many great options for people who enjoy different foods. A P.F. Chang’s meal would not be complete without the Famous Lettuce wraps. Editor of The Pulse, Emma Galgano, who is an avid fan of these lettuce wraps and P.F. Chang’s in general, stated, “It’s something about the crispy lettuce, juicy chicken, and crunchy rice noodles that make the lettuce wraps amazing. However, they are so delicious that they sometimes fill you up before your entree arrives.”

Another one of my favorite appetizers is the pork steamed or fried dumplings. Served in a sizzling pan, the dumplings are incredibly enjoyable but light enough to keep you hungry for your meal. Other great appetizers include pork spare ribs and crispy green beans.

P.F. Chang’s has many incredible entrees. Personally, I don’t like fish very much, so I always go for a chicken or beef dish. My two favorite dishes at P.F. Chang’s are Chang’s spicy chicken and Mongolian beef. Chang’s spicy chicken is a perfect mix of sweet and spicy. The chicken comes in a mouth-watering glaze. The dish is spicy enough to satisfy all guests, but it will not alienate other guests who do not like extremely spicy meals.

If you are someone who does not like spicy food at all, then the Mongolian beef is a great choice. This dish includes bite-size pieces of beef with fantastic texture and flavor.

For guests looking for something on the sweet side, the honey

chicken is the perfect choice. In response to what she thinks of the honey chicken, Emma stated, “The honey chicken is my go-to order, but I have to admit I love food that is overly sweet. The sweet glaze draped over the crispy chicken makes for a mouth-watering meal.”

When I’m in the mood to change things up, another strong dish is the sesame chicken. Despite being a simple dish, guests can spice it up by asking for it to be made spicy. Upon requesting your sesame chicken spicy, the dish is served with delicious peppers that enhance its flavor.

P.F. Chang’s has a good atmosphere and solid service. Servers are always ready and enthusiastic to serve you and your party. One nice touch that the service adds is free refills on any soda. P.F. Chang’s prices are somewhere in the middle, cheaper than any high-end restaurant but more expensive than fast food and most chains. The average entree costs $15.

P.F. Chang’s is easily one of my favorite restaurants because of its delicious food. It is an excellent option for any Harvey student looking to enjoy some Chinese food.

Attack on the High Table

Scrap

New York City is a cool location, because you can walk anywhere and find a hip place out of nowhere. A few months ago, I was walking with nothing to do, and I looked across the street and found Scrap Yard NYC.

Scrap Yard is a street art shop in SoHo, New York on Canal and W. Broadway. It is the world’s longest standing graffiti shop, and they sell the top brands of paint. Montana cans, for example, are sold there.

Three years after “Parabellum,” John Wick returns in the fourth installment of his franchise. Released March 24, it has been held in extremely high regard by audiences.

Starring Canadian actor Keanu Reeves, John Wick takes action against the high-level players of the High Table and elite members of the underworld, who are after the $14 million bounty on his head. To survive, Wick must traverse the underworld of sites from Osaka, Japan to Paris, France.

A major aspect of this movie that has made the franchise stand out is the outstanding fight scenes throughout. In an interview with Sam Cleal about the choreography of the film with director Chad Stahelski, Stahelski started by saying, “Choreography, I think, by its nature is fun. It’s supposed to be difficult. You’re supposed to figure it all out, and that’s the fun part… I mean, there were no incidents, no animals or humans were hurt, but sometimes the moves don’t quite do what we’re supposed to do. But that’s the fun part!”

Lead actor Reeves followed up by saying, “The stunt guys were amazing. Like, in the Osaka Continental scene, there was this kid who just threw himself down an escalator.” Along the same lines, movie reviewer Dwight Brown stated that “John Wick 4” is “an elaborately choreographed, gorgeously crafted slaughter fest. A blood-thirsty spectacle. A circus of scoundrels fighting to the death in the most gracefully violent ways.”

Fans of the franchise enjoyed this latest installment. A Rotten Tomatoes critic was engulfed, writing, “Even as the world around Wick expands, and the death count spikes exponentially, Chapter 4 remembers well that the body keeps the score; Reeves makes the weariness of this long-anguished assassin more palpable than ever.” An interesting fact to note is that this franchise is

so well loved, that King Abdullah II of Jordan lent the production a Black Hawk helicopter to capture a sunrise scene during filming.

Another vital aspect that adds to the overall impact of the film is how it pays homage to actor Donnie Yen’s Hong Kong movies. His first roles in Western films were smaller roles in “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” and “xXx: Return of Xander Cage.”

In “John Wick: Chapter 4,” Yen’s fighting skills and superb stunt work were displayed in his leading role as the assassin Caine. In an intense fight scene at the Osaka Continental Hotel, Yen’s movements and fighting style are nods to his martial arts films “Ip Man” and “In the Line of Duty IV.”

This is not the first tribute made in John Wick movies. In a synopsis by writer/ranter Brad Curran, director “Chad Stahelski has overtly paid tribute to many martial arts classics in the franchise’s action scenes. These have included the hall of mirrors in John Wick: Chapter 2 being a tribute to Enter the Dragon”

Curran continued, “many shattered glass cases in John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum being a tribute to the climactic mall fight in Jackie Chan’s Police Story, in which much glass is shattered. Add in John’s Bruce Lee-worthy use of a pair of nunchakus in one of John Wick: Chapter 4’s fight scenes, and Stahelski’s directorial trademark of paying homage to beloved martial arts films really stands out.”

It is interesting to note that there is fan fiction surrounding the ending that leaves the audience the slim possibility of another film in the future. In my personal opinion, this latest film is the perfect ending to a historic franchise that made a mark for years to come.

The store itself, which is smaller than your bedroom, is drenched with graffiti stickers from artists all over the world on its walls. On the right, after you walk in, there are lockers with all the spray paint cans, and when you turn left, there is artist merch on the walls, including hats, shirts, hoodies, etc. The paint pens are in the middle of the shop in a glass case.

According to their website, Scrap Yard was established in 1990, when SoHo was called SoHo down and under, meaning that graffiti was considered an underworld activity because it is generally frowned upon. Street artists had Scrap Yard to fulfill their needs in the world of street art.

They carry many popular brands that street artists love. Aside from Montana, they sell Krink and MTN, and they collab with local New York City artists selling their custom merchandise. Some locals who sell their merch in Scrap Yard are Villainous, Vandal, New York Robbery, and others.

This shop may be small, but the inventory is loaded. They carry every color of spray paint imaginable, and they sell stickers, paint markers, mops, and caps. Caps are accessories used to either make the paint thinner or thicker.

Instead of using these spray paint cans for projects such as home improvement, these cans are meant for art, specifically street art. Some may incorrectly think that graffiti is vandalism, but there truly is an art form to tagging walls.

Of course you need permission from the business or landlord, and if you get it, it is your time to make a personal mark on that piece of property. Or you can be a rebel and not ask for permission, but do so at your own risk. Construction areas are less risky for this art, because there is usually a lot of scrap wood or fencing that will most likely be taken down.

According to James, the owner, Scrap Yard is unique com-

pared to the other shops in that genre due to its originality and just how vintage it is overall. This shop has not moved and has not changed since 1990, and 1990 was a huge era in street art across NYC. The owner, when asked about his plans for the future in a YouTube video posted by Graffiti NYC TV, replied, “You won’t be ready for it.”

Scrap Yard also sells merchandise via their website, scrapyardnyc.com, and I recommend checking out their various social media accounts, too. But you need to be in the shop for the experience.

There are several reviews on Yelp that praise Scrap Yard. Mark P. from Caldwell Idaho stated, “They have a very unique art supply store.” Cody S. from San Jose, California writes, “It’s packed with quality products and awesome gear.” Lastly, Erica F. from Clearwater, Florida stated, “I AM IN LOVE.” Clearly, many people from all over the country have good things to say about Scrap Yard. I would not be surprised if people from other countries have checked it out, too

Scrap Yard is a needle in a haystack buried in the streets of SoHo NYC, and if you happen to find this joint, definitely pop in and check it out.

Sal’s Pizza and Pasta, located at 201 Marble Avenue in Pleasantville, has lots of variety between pizza types and food straight out of the kitchen. It is my go-to recommendation for pizza and takeout in the Westchester area.

When arriving, you will see the counter and all the pizza on a little stand. There are tables with seats along them on both sides. So, if you want, you are welcome to stay and eat a slice or whatever food you ordered from the kitchen.

The kitchen has more standard Italian food than most places have. But what makes Sal’s better compared to other restaurants is how Sal’s cooks their food. When it comes to the pizza, there are many different slices you can get.

There are specialty slices, which cost $4.75 per

want. There are a variety of different dishes like pasta, salads, wedges, wraps, chicken dishes, and so much more that will make you feel full after you leave.

slice. The different types of specialty slices at Sal’s Pizza are the Chicken Bacon Ranch, Buffalo Chicken, BBQ Chicken, two different Margaritas, White slice, Salad slice, Chicken Scarpariello, Chicken Marsala, Chicken Parm, Eggplant Rollatini, Penne Vodka, Grandma, and Siciliano.

These are all the slices that you will see out on the counter, but you still can order whole pizzas with whatever toppings you want. Or, there are pizzas sold by the pie, not by the slice, such as the Seafood pie (fried calamari), My Cousin Vinny’s (a Sicilian pie with pesto, vodka, marinara sauce), and much more. These pies are not common, and only some people know about them and order them.

If you are coming in and don’t want pizza, the food from the kitchen is so good. Sal’s Pizza has lots of different options so that the whole family can get something they

When it comes to the pasta dishes at Sal’s, my goto dish is penne vodka with chicken cutlet. The chicken cutlet is an add-on that is usually not included in the dish, but it’s worth trying it with the chicken cutlet.

Now, onto the salads, which are something I never used to eat, but when I tried a salad from Sal’s, something changed, and I can’t stop eating them anymore. The Cobb salad is my favorite, but there are a lot of great options, like the Sal’s salad that contains nuts, cheese, and then the usual components of a garden salad. But what makes every salad taste so good is the house dressing that Sal’s makes so special.

Their main dishes are similar to most Italian restaurants, such as Chicken Parm, Chicken Francese, Chicken Cacciatore, Chicken Sorrentino, Chicken Scarpariello. You can also get all these dishes with veal instead of chicken.

All these dishes are special, because they are all so good but also so different. A dinner will cost you $21.99,

and you will get the dinner of your choice but also a salad or pasta. But there is also a dinner for two or a dinner for four. A dinner for two is $36.99, but with a dinner for two, you get your main dish with pasta and a garden salad.

Finally, a dinner for four can give you enough food for the whole family. It’s the same for the others; you pick whichever dish you want, but here you get a bigger salad and pasta, as well. Usually, the pasta is covered in the same sauce as the dish you picked or marinara sauce. But something that happens often is the people change their pasta sauce to vodka sauce, which is an additional fee of $4, with the original cost being $59.99 for a dinner for four.

Something that makes this restaurant so special is the community. There are a lot of regulars that come in often, so the staff knows everyone. Also, everyone working inside the restaurant is awesome, and I’ve been lucky enough to work at Sal’s for just about a year. As an employee and a patron, I can say that Sal’s Pizzeria in Pleasantville is one of the best restaurants in the area.
