AR HOMES BY CHRISTOPHER SCOTT:

Not Your Average

CUSTOM BUILD AR HOMES BY CHRISTOPHER SCOTT MAKES THE PROCESS EASIER FOR YOU by Christy Heitger-Ewing / photos by Graham Photography 6 H AV E N

AR Homes by Christopher Scott has a unique process that’s different from the average custom build. It all gets a jump start by reviewing their plan collection with each client, rather than starting from scratch. “We like to say, ‘Start with ours and make it yours.’ Our 100+ plan collection is already priced and designed, ready to modify for our clients,” says Scott Bates, co-owner of Christopher Scott Homes. “It’s the shorter, easier path to a custom home design and also allows our customers to stay within their targeted budget.” At this year’s Home-A-Rama in Holliday Farms, Bates and his colleagues Christopher Carnell and Dan Hayes, wanted to showcase a modern design that was also warm and livable. The Newport model, named after Newport Beach, California, is a 6,600 sq. ft. home that includes an abundance of glass, modern low-pitched angle rooflines, stucco and stone exterior, and metal and glass garage doors. Some unique features of the home include a floating stair system, a hidden pantry in the kitchen (disguised as a cabinet door), and a casual main floor sitting room with a bar that shares a two-way fireplace opposite of the great room. While these rooms connect, hidden pocket doors enable the homeowner to separate the two areas when desired. “You can separate the kids from the adults or the men from the women – whatever you need,” says Bates with a chuckle. Another of those eye-catching details, the floating stair system, is a metal structure with wood treads and a glass railing. “All of the different materials really draw your eye there when you walk inside,” says Bates. Behind the stairs are windows and a stone wall that climbs to the top. In addition, the wall just adjacent to the dining room is all glass and displays wine racks. The home has outstanding outdoor living that includes a fireplace and firepit, dining area with ample seating, and magnificent views of the golf course. While outdoor living spaces have always been popular, they are especially relevant this year in the era of COVID-19 as people seek safe ways to gather. “This is a unique time we are in. Clients are investing more in their homes because that’s their escape, their sanctuary,” says Bates. “They’re spending a lot of time there, so they want to make both their indoor and outdoor spaces special and comfortable for family and friends.” Not only does AR by Christopher Scott Homes have a model in Zionsville’s Holliday Farms but they also have a smaller traditional cottage style home called the Prestwick in Westfield’s Chatham Hills. Both homes are open seven days a week, Monday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. and Sunday from noon until 6 p.m. “For anyone seeking some design inspiration, come see these models,” says Bates. “We’re excited to show off these homes in the Home-A-Rama and keep them open to the public following the show.” The Newport is located at 10895 Holliday Farms Blvd., Zionsville. The Prestwick is located at 20879 Chatham Ridge Blvd., Westfield. To learn more about building with AR Homes or to schedule a tour at the model call (317) 523-4408.

DAVIS HOMES:

DESIGNING A HOME THAT

Makes Sense for you

by Matt Keating / photos by Dream Home Media and The Home Aesthetic

As we are all spending more time at home these days, many homeowners are realizing they either need more space, or a different use of space. When you are ready to build the home of your dreams, look no further than Davis Homes. The Davis Homes team will work with you to design the space that makes the most sense for your routines and lifestyle. Whether you need home office space, or student study areas, the exceptionally talented Davis Design Team will work with you to accomplish your needs. The recent opening of an updated Davis Homes Design Studio, in the Keystone Crossing area provides new home buyers the opportunity to view current design features in a comfortable setting with advice from Davis’ expert designers. BUILDING WITH TODAY’S DESIGN TRENDS “Today’s more discerning buyers generally want more open designs, taller ceilings, larger windows, larger kitchen islands and gourmet-style cooking ability, walk-in shower spas, outdoor living areas, and in many cases are not as focused on the size of the space, as they are on the style and features within the space. These are just some of the benefits of building your own new home versus buying an older used home,” Jerrod Klein, V.P. of Sales and Marketing for Davis Homes said. The Davis Homes team is also focused on today’s exterior design desires, such as Craftsman, Modern Prairie, Modern Farmhouse, and other modern twists on more traditional architecture. IT IS A GREAT TIME TO BUY “With today’s historically low interest rates, the resulting unprecedented buying power makes it the perfect time to build your brandnew home,” said Klein. Davis Homes works with you to create the home you want within a price range you are comfortable with. The in-house Davis Mortgage Services, along with other preferred mortgage lenders, will tailor financing to your needs and desires. 1 0 H AV E N

YOUR HOME IS IN GOOD HANDS Davis Homes is a local, family-owned builder currently building On Your Lot Custom Homes throughout Central Indiana, as well as building new homes in numerous custom communities in Indianapolis and the surrounding area. “We are proud to have become Central Indiana’s largest On Your Lot home builder. Our niche of providing affordable customized building, with a focus on great value to our clients, has resulted in record sales and growing demand for our services. This has resulted in us expanding our offering to even higher new home price points. We now serve customer needs from the $300,000 range, to over 1 million,” said President and CEO Brad Davis, a third-generation builder. Davis says his experienced team will lead you through all aspects of the home building process. From land assessment or helping you find the perfect lot, to designing the home and working with you on the features most important to you, to the last home inspection, you and your home are in good hands. Whether you dream of building on your own lot or in a beautiful planned community, contact Davis Homes online at DavisHomes.com to discuss building your custom home.

Safety Measures Increased safety precautions were implemented for the on-site experience to provide a safe environment for attendees. Tickets were sold in advance online by arrival time blocks in order to effectively spread out guests and allow for better social distancing throughout the homes and event site. This proved to be effective as each 30-minute arrival time completely sold out while still maintaining on-site capacities approved by the Boone County Health Department. This approach, coupled with extensive cleaning and sanitizing enhancements, allowed guests to comfortably explore the homes with peace of mind.

Virtual Experience This year, First Internet Bank Home-A-Rama debuted an all NEW Virtual Experience. For the first time, all eleven homes could be viewed online with exclusive behindthe-scenes videos, interactive 3D tours and inspiring photography. This allowed many out-of-town guests, relocating customers, and home-bound attendees the chance to still fully experience everything Home-A-Rama has to offer! Virtual attendees could message the builders and ask questions about each home in the Guest Book, as well as learn more about many of the fixtures and finishes throughout each home via the 3D virtual tour and save photos to their Favorites.

WEDGEWOOD BUILDING COMPANY

Although the in-person Home-A-Rama ended on October 4th, the GREAT news is that tickets to the online Virtual Experience are still available and will continue to be sold through the remainder of 2020. Don’t miss your chance to see the homes!

Realtor Day Realtor Day took place on September 24th and was met with similar enthusiasm. Active realtors could attend with free entry on this day by registering in advance, and these registrations hit our max capacity within 36 hours of making the site available! Realtors flocked to HomeA-Rama to explore the homes and were greeted by sponsors offering giveaways throughout the event site.

HOME BUYING & SELLING

RE/MAX AT THE CROSSING:

Low Interest Rates Continue to Set Up a

Seller’s Market by Matt Keating

Phil Hotle says that home buyers looking to purchase a new house have to be ready to move quickly, especially when the home of their dreams comes on the market. Buyers need to be pre-approved and well prepared. “While interest rates and a low inventory of homes are still continuing to be at historic all-time lows, it’s really a seller’s market,” Hotle says. “Houses that are priced right and in great shape can sell within a day or two.” Freddie Mac reported that “the 30-year fixed rate mortgage average was 2.87 percent for the week ending Sept. 17, up one point for the record low set the week before.” Market Watch reported that “low mortgage rates have stoked the housing market, as they compelled would-be buyers to speed up their timelines in order to lock in the cheap financing.” Hotle noted that new home construction is also hot right now.

Realtors.com reported that builders were scrambling to fill a severe housing shortage when COVID-19 hit. After a brief slow down, increased demand has really been heating up. The National Association of Realtors reported that “single family starts recently increased 4.1 percent to an annual rate of 1.02 million. Low interest rates and solid demand are spurring single-family construction growth. Single-family permits are also continuing to rise as well, and single-family starts showed continued growth in August. Your home is your sanctuary, and when you are ready to move you want to find the right house. To get the home you want, don’t wait and be prepared. Contact Phil Hotle of RE/MAX At The Crossing at (317) 919-8504 for guidance with your next real estate transaction.

EXECUTIVE HOMES 2020 HOME-A-RAMA SHOW HOME

home was to create a space that was bright, clean, and modern. “You definitely get that feel of the modern farmhouse,” says Suski, who had fun working on the different color palettes. “It all starts with conceptual sketches. Then we go into more concrete, three-dimensional drawings. It’s up to us to come up with something that will really pop.” The spec home’s kitchen has black and white Café appliance, white countertops, and a unique patterned backsplash. An abundance of natural light flows into the home accentuating the 12-ft. ceilings, modern mantle, and stylish granite fireplace of the great room. This attention to detail in design and quality is precisely what excites Gray about collaborating with ACo. “At Executive Homes, we get to work with the best of the best,” says Gray. “If ever there’s a problem, ACo is a phone call away and we work together to make it right.” That trust in their partnership with ACo is what led Executive Homes to turn to Suski and Evans once again for help with their showcase home in the 2020 Home-A-Rama at Holliday Farms in Zionsville. Located on a large corner lot adjacent to Hole 3 of the Championship Course at Holliday Farms, is another example of the detailed craftsmanship, unsurpassed livability, quality features and extraordinary value for which Executive Homes is well known. The 5-bedroom, 4.5 bath, 5,500 sq. ft. home features a blend of elegant colonial-style architecture with a functional, open floorplan. “People like classic architecture but still want modern features on the inside,” says Gray. “Our goal was to create the perfect balance of timeless design while meeting current lifestyle needs.” Throughout the home, ACo installed flooring, tile, and custom cabinetry in rooms from the kitchen and bathrooms, to the master bedroom. The gourmet kitchen features an oversized pantry, a secondary prep area, generous shelving, and a custom-built hood. The secluded master suite boasts a private coffee bar, dual closets and a luxurious bath with a zero-threshold shower and free-standing tub. There is even a pocket office with desk and cabinetry on the main level and a kids’ study area in the loft. “We tried to make every room practical and useful,” says Gray. “This home was carefully crafted with no detail overlooked.”

EXECUTIVE HOMES SPEC AT JACKSON’S GRANT

Many people dream of building a custom home for years and when they finally get the opportunity, they want it to be a positive experience. Patrick Gray, Project Manager at Executive Homes, helps bring those dreams to life and relies on the team at ACo to ensure a worry-free cabinetry and flooring experience for his clients. ACo specializes in supplying and installing kitchen, bath, cabinetry, and flooring products for custom home builders. Gray and the team at Executive Homes partner with ACo on many of their projects for design, product selection, and installation of flooring, cabinets, and tile. Carlie Suski, ACo Design and Sales Consultant, enjoys the collaborative nature of working with builders in that they each bring a fresh perspective to the table. “When we come together, it’s amazing to see how that marries and the end result is remarkable,” she says. Joe Evans, ACo’s Director of Operations, says he loves partnering with Executive Homes because of the strong collaborative relationships they have built. “I love to take care of the clients and make the process enjoyable for everyone and working with Executive Homes makes that easy,” says Evans. Recently ACo and Executive Homes partnered for two projects – a stunning spec home in Jackson’s Grant, a prestigious neighborhood in Carmel, and a breathtaking Home-A-Rama house in Holliday Farms. GARAGE DOORS

PRECISION DOOR SERVICE OF INDIANAPOLIS:

WINTER IS APPROACHING: Increase Your Home Efficiency by Courtney Walker Pope

Colder weather is quickly approaching as we move through fall into the winter, and with those colder temperatures comes concern for your homes heating efficiency. There’s no better time than now to invest in weather-proofing your home by upgrading with a new garage door. Your local, well experienced, and highly professional garage door company, Precision Door, has been in the industry for over 15 years helping thousands of homeowners improve their home efficiency. Precision owner, Joel Belyew, explains the importance of considering installing a more advanced garage door before colder temperatures and inclement weather arrives. “The garage and garage door are significant portions of the exterior of many homes and sadly, numerous homes in our area have garage doors with little to no insulation. By updating your garage door, the efficiency in your home can improve dramatically!” The change can be exponential for homeowners, both from a cost and energy-efficiency perspective. “If you have living space above your garage or store home appliances such as a furnace, water heater or water softener in the garage, a well-insulated door will save costly repair bills in addition to significant savings in monthly utility expenses,” shares Belyew. If you are looking for a local, reliable resource for your garage door upgrade, connect with Precision Indy! As winter approaches, consider a more well-insulated garage door and call (317) 844-4849 or visit their website precisionindy.com to schedule your free estimate.

KEEP THE HEAT IN! As the weather gets colder, improve the efficiency in your home with a well-insulated garage door. According to Joel Belyew, owner of Precision Indy, by updating your garage door, the efficiency in your home can improve dramatically!

CUSTOM CONCRETE:

Hindsight is 2020, and 2020

BROUGHT FORESIGHT by Christy Heitger-Ewing

The phrase “hindsight is 2020” seems ironic these days given the fact that no one saw 2020 coming. When we rang in the new year, Custom Concrete had a vision for the year before everything turned in a different direction. Looking back, Jason Ells, Senior Vice President of Custom Concrete, recalls when things started to change, “In March our heads were spinning. We were uncertain how the government mandates, safety protocols, and economic conditions would affect our business.” But instead of panicking, the team at Custom Concrete took the advice of Winston Churchill, who had said, “Never let a good crisis go to waste,” so they picked up their phones to check on their customers. “It was an opportunity to be vulnerable and real and ask how they were doing and what we could do to help,” says Ells of the team’s motivation to turn uncertainty into opportunity and to make these crazy times into something valuable. Custom Concrete employees also identified what was needed to be successful, and subsequently built wraparound services based on those needs. Going into the pandemic the team at Custom Concrete vowed to remain calm, seek wisdom, and always do the next right thing. By following these guiding principles, they have seen improved relationships with clients, better employee communication, and increased employee engagement. Dialing in on services and quality allowed Custom Concrete to optimize during this time. As a result, Custom Concrete feels well poised for 2021. As part of an essential industry, Custom Concrete has learned and grown tremendously this year, and they are excited about the future of homebuilding and our communities. CALIFORNIA CLOSETS:

Improve Daily Living with

Bigger, Better Closets by Matt Keating

Many people are already anticipating getting their homes ready for the holidays, or just planning ahead to get their homes more organized for everyday living. This means coming up with a productive plan to maximize closet space. According to Erin Moore, an executive designer for California Closets in Carmel, she has observed a trend of clients really focusing on the closets that are a part of their daily lives. From master closets to pantries, coat closets and even garages, these spaces help us run our households, so you want them to be functional and well planned for ease of access.

“With all of the additional time spent at home, I think that everyone is really analyzing their spaces and items,” Moore says. “People are realizing that there are things that could be done to improve their spaces.” As organizing has continued to gain a great deal of popularity (more so than ever before) during the past six months or so, many people are making room for more closet space, especially during a home renovation. Maybe you have a large front entryway, but store coats in a mudroom by the garage. Consider adding a coat closet near the front door for added storage and convenience. Your holiday guests will appreciate the easy

access when they are coming or going. If you don’t have the extra room for adding closet space, then you will want to maximize the space you do have. “I think that taking advantage of any space that you can is really important if you are going to make the investment,” Moore said. “Make sure that the space you are designing for your new closet is a large enough size for your needs, a space that can be utilized fully. Things to do to help achieve this would be less obstructions in the space, or even doing pocket doors to eliminate the heaviness of a door swinging into a space.” Making sure that everything has a place in the most convenient location for your daily routines is also an important consideration. In the master suite, you probably store most clothing in a closet but

may keep some items in storage in your bedroom or possibly the bathroom. This can be a hassle when you need to find something or put it away. With a scattered system, your things can end up all over the place. Moore has a solution for this. “Another thing to think about is drawer space and allocating a place for it – folks are really starting to eliminate dressers in the bedroom and incorporating these into the closet design,” she says. DALTILE:

LUXURY Vinyl Flooring Offers Durable, Affordable Beauty by Matt Keating

When homeowners need durable and versatile flooring, many have been exploring their options with luxury vinyl flooring thanks to its high quality and affordable style. Daltile in Indianapolis carries a wide variety of luxury vinyl flooring says Gabe Carson, branch manager, and improvements in design and quality of the product have served to increase its popularity in recent years. Typically a water-resistant product, luxury vinyl flooring is perfect for high-moisture environments like bathrooms and basements. It usually comes as either tile or plank style pieces that mimic the look of wood, porcelain, ceramic and other materials. This versatility of design makes luxury vinyl flooring a great choice for any room in the home, from the kitchen to the living room to the master bedroom. Another key factor for many homeowners in choosing luxury vinyl floors is the durability. It won’t crack, is

scratch resistant, and is much more flexible that other types of floors so it performs well in high-traffic areas or homes with children and pets. Amanda Oldenettel, sales representative, Daltile & Marazzi, said the Wellsridge and Langton Luxury Vinyl Flooring from Daltile are particularly attractive and resilient. “Wellsridge and Langton are both really well made,” Oldenettel says. “These are gorgeous and affordable looks that can complement or be the basis of design for both residential and commercial applications.” Oldenettel noted that Wellsridge is a beautifully designed luxury vinyl flooring that provides highgraphic variation and texture alongside its enhanced performance and quick installation. “It also has excellent thermal insulation and superior sound attenuation,” Oldenettel says. “It’s a very powerful product.” Langton luxury vinyl flooring, meanwhile, suits a variety of styles from Wabi-Sabi (a traditional Japanese aesthetic centered on the acceptance of imperfection) to Scandinavian sensibility. It is offered in two different platforms for adaptable installation. The luxury vinyl planks offer freedom in design without sacrificing everyday durability. To explore the myriad of options and find your perfect luxury vinyl flooring, visit Daltile, 9901 Kincaid Drive, Suite 400A, Fishers, call (317) 429-6586, or check out their website at daltile.com. LUXURY VINYL FLOORING is high in quality and is affordable, according to Gabe Carson, branch manager at Daltile. It also offers design freedom without sacrificing everyday durability.

G&G CUSTOM HOMES:

Modern Farmhouse Design at the 2020 Home-A-Rama

W

by Courtney Walker Pope / photos by Graham Photography

ith warm tones, an approachable curb appeal, and an oversized but welcoming front door, G&G Custom Homes is proud to welcome you to their Modern Farmhouse on hole #2 at the Pete Dye Course at Holliday Farms. Featured in this year’s First Internet Bank Home-A-Rama, the 6,992 square foot, five-bedroom, six-bathroom, custom home showcases many comforting and cozy features paired with striking design elements. Whether visitors saw the home in-person or virtually, they were sure to find that G&G included eye-catching details inside and out, around each corner, and on every level. BUILDING A SHOWCASE HOME Moving quickly with a build time of twelve months from start-to-finish, the G&G team completed this project working closely alongside the homeowners. The goal was to create a home that worked for their family, while also adding all the details that make show homes so unique. The result is a memorable design that is both distinctive and livable. The details are an intricate part of the home building process, so everyone on the G&G team from owner Joe Garcia, to project manager Tom Watson, and designer Hilari Goris carefully considered every element and design trend that would make this house a home. All around, Garcia says, “It was just a fun project to be part of and we had great clients to work with that allowed our team to take risks and showcase lots of things in the home!” TAKE A PEEK INSIDE One of the first things you will notice is that this home is perfect for entertaining – indoors and outdoors! The kitchen is warm and inviting, with an oversized island to gather round, and an open floor plan with plenty of cozy spaces for socializing. Just off the dining area, sliding doors lead to a covered porch with a fireplace, heaters, November 2020 3 1

motorized screens and an outdoor kitchen. There is even a roof top patio, and a gorgeous pool overlooking the rolling green golf course. Back inside, you will find this home has enjoyable extras such as a kids’ activity room, a fun loft area, and four fireplaces. Downstairs, the sleek modern bar area features a stunning wine room and includes bar and booth seating, as well as a nearby lounge area. The home also includes many convenient and practical features such as a high-end AV package with cameras and motorized window treatments. In addition to the conveniences of modern technology, the homeowners were also concerned about energy efficiency and added a high-performance furnace/AC. DETAILS, DETAILS, DETAILS If you caught Haven’s last issue, we featured the interior trim details included in this home. You can still visit (or revisit) the Home-A-Rama virtual tour, so be sure to lookout for some unique details within the millwork and cabinetry including three secret doors found within the home: in the master bath; in the basement storage area; and behind the bar. For the interior decor, Goris incorporated a lot of texture and pattern in modern ways using wood, metal, wallpaper, mirroring, and tile. The color palette is consistent throughout the home, but each space is special and unique. You will see a variety of mixed metals – golds, polished nickel, black, and more all through the home and in the same rooms. When it came to the interior design of this house there were no rules! With this being G&G’s third year as a builder contributor to Home-A-Rama, Garcia shares, “We love seeing and (now hearing) the reaction we get from people that come through and view it or tune in virtually. That’s our absolute favorite part about participating!” THE G&G DIFFERENCE The team at G&G Custom Homes builds homes for clients that want to avoid the stresses of an average custom home build. G&G’s Garcia believes a house should be a reflection of the people and families that call it home. It was this philosophy that guided G&G during the Home-A-Rama build and helped them create a modern farmhouse that is far from ordinary. By selecting only a limited number of homes to build each year, Joe develops a close working relationship with each family and works directly with them from start to finish. This provides a memorable experience and a house they are proud to call their forever home. With every home they build, G&G incorporates today’s innovative building technologies, with a focus on high-performance HVAC units and systems. Many of their homes showcase the future of design all while keeping pace with the changes in the market and maintaining their commitment to personal relationships. G&G always provides top-notch services and uses the best building materials to give clients the quality of dream home they’ve been waiting for – that’s the G&G difference. 3 2 H AV E N

BURTNER ELECTRIC:

WAYS TO LIGHT UP YOUR OUTDOOR SPACES by Matt Keating

3 6 H AV E N

As the days continue to get shorter, you want to create more effective light in your outdoor spaces. After a long day at work, you can’t wait to get home, but you also want to make sure you can see well in your driveway, or be able to relax in your heated, screened-in patio. Here are some wonderful ways to light up your outdoor spaces:

1

LED LIGHTS

3

OUTDOOR STEP LIGHTING

“Having lighting on steps and walkways is both wise and safe,” Burtner says. “You can use outdoor step lighting on the side of your steps to light up the surface of each step. It can really illuminate your walkway, looks great, and it helps your guests see better as they walk up to your house.” Another option is to add strip lights to any stairs leading up to entrances or around your property.

Jodi Burtner with Burtner Electric says, “LED lights lower your electric bills, look very attractive, and really light up your driveways and patios.” Solar Globe String lights add the perfect glow of ambient lighting to an outdoor patio or screened-in porch. You can also use LED lights with your outdoor planters to accentuate light in front of your home.

4 2

PATHWAY LIGHTING

Installing pathway lighting at a lower height on both sides of your pathway helps your guests navigate safely to your backyard or fire pit in the dark. Solar Globe String Lights are also great for paths, and if you have a walkway from the street to your front door, they are effective at lighting the way.

ARCHITECTURAL LIGHTING

Highlight the details of your home with architectural lighting. Homes with stucco walls or other unique features look really beautiful with this type of lighting. According to Burtner, using architectural lighting around the exterior of your home is a great way to increase safety and security, but keep up the curb appeal of your home.

Illuminate your outdoor spaces for security, safety, and beauty. To learn more about creating your ideal outdoor lighting plan, contact Burtner Electric at (317) 773-7663, or online at BurtnerElectric.com.

STONE ARTISANS:

A STUNNING CENTERPIECE ISLAND for AR Homes at Home-A-Rama by Matt Keating / photos by Graham Photography

Home-A-Rama is an event like none other. It is an opportunity for local builders and craftsman to collaborate and showcase the latest trends in new home design, construction, and technology. The team at Stone Artisans was proud to partner with builders on several of the luxury homes featured in the 2020 Home-A-Rama at Holliday Farms in Zionsville, says Cory Kroger, CEO and President of Stone Artisans. 3 8 H AV E N

Their work in the show home for AR Homes by Christopher Scott, a respected leader in building high-end custom homes in the Indianapolis area, was particularly distinctive according to Kroger. “The island (we worked on for the AR Home kitchen) was very different than anything we have ever constructed,” Kroger says. “The designer specified two different colors of quartz which gave the space visual contrast. Additionally, the

In addition to the centerpiece island, Stone Artisans also created and installed the bathroom vanity and wet bar counter for the AR Homes by Christopher Scott show home at the 2020 Home-A-Rama at Holliday Farms in Zionsville.

variation in the counter heights with mitered edges provided not only architectural interest, but also added to the flow and function of the room. The island was truly the centerpiece of the kitchen.” We are seeing an increasing trend of new home buyers that are opting towards solid colors with added texture for their counters that add depth, such as matte black versus a polished surface. Suede finished granites and quartzite also offer a more unique style for today’s design savvy homeowner. Kroger notes that he and his team were excited to have their work on display at the 2020 Home-A-Rama, and later enjoyed touring the other homes. “I was blessed enough to tour many of the homes on preview night,” Kroger mentions. “I really love the country setting in Holliday Farms. It is a great addition to the Zionsville scene! COVID-19 protocol and safety measures really helped trim down the volume of people at the show, but still offered a great opportunity for serious and potential residents. The show was a hit in my mind!”

Kroger added that there were a lot of great new ideas and innovative concepts floating around the homes. “AR Homes had a great corner lot to house their modern home,” Kroger enthuses. “This home is made for hosting friends and family. The model, known as The Newport, lives big, yet still has a home-like feel! Great job to the AR team on this superb new model in Zionsville’s exclusive Holliday Farms!” If you are looking to build or remodel a space with the latest style of stone counters, contact the trusted team at Stone Artisans online at stone-artisans.com.

CUSTOM HOMES

KENT SHAFFER HOMES:

A Style That is

Strikingly Different by Christy Heitger-Ewing / photos by Graham Photography 4 0 H AV E N

When Kent Shaffer Homes was invited to participate in the 2020 Home-A-Rama in Holliday Farms, they chose to design a 7,700 sq. ft. modern-industrial style home that blends steel with stone and cyprus. The exterior mixes channel rustic cedar siding with regular James Hardie artisan siding to give it a warmer feel than you typically find on a modern home. They also added custom aluminum awnings in the front, which provides a highly unique look. “It’s a neat feature most people haven’t seen before,” says Kristen Shaffer-Hale, CEO of Kent Shaffer Homes. On the inside they kept with the modern-industrial style by using exposed steel beams in the kitchen and basement. In addition, they included custom metal work throughout the house, such as a stainlesssteel hood in the kitchen, metal railings, and metal shelving in the lower level bar. “The mixture of the steel, metal and windows really give it that modern-industrial feel,” says Shaffer-Hale. At the same time, the Shaffer team made sure to infuse warmth into the home by introducing warmer colors, shiplap & wood beams in the main floor great room. “That’s something we strive to do in each of our houses – to create a welcoming environment that makes a house feel like a home,” says Hale, noting that this particular one has a number of features that won’t be found elsewhere. For instance, the study has Pecky Cyprus wood ceilings, not a very common wood. And in the kitchen, they installed three different colored cabinets – white, charcoal and maple. “A lot of times you’ll see two colors in the kitchen, and we decided to go with three,” says Shaffer-Hale. “With the home show, we like doing things people don’t see every day.” Homeowners will also love that this home enables them to control the HVAC, security, audio & video, and lighting from their smart phone. There are many more distinctive elements in this 5-bedroom, 7-bath, 3.5 car garage home such as a hot-rolled steel fireplace, custom brick walls, warm oak flooring, and a walk-in butler’s pantry. There’s also an exercise/Zen room in the basement, contemporary wine racks in the cellar, and a golf cart garage door that exits onto the golf course. The extensive window package throughout the house highlights phenomenal views of the golf course. With floor-to-ceiling windows and 12’ ceilings throughout the main floor, and 14’ ceiling in the great room the home feels remarkably open. There is even a folding door that exposes the great room, dining room, and kitchen to the outdoor living area. “The open concept means that when you are hosting parties or having family over, the outdoors flows in,” says Shaffer-Hale. In addition, the back porch has automated screens that can be switched out in the fall and winter. If you are looking for builder who can help you create a home that is strikingly different, connect with the team at Kent Shaffer Homes online at kentshafferhomes.com.

2020 HOME-A-RAMA: The Kent Shaffer Homes show home in Holliday Farms features a modern-industrial style that blends steel with stone and wood. CLEANING & HOUSEKEEPING

CHRISTINA’S COMPLETE CLEAN:

Building Solid Relationships with Clients by Matt Keating

4 8 H AV E N

“A clean space is a healthy space, and a healthy space is a safe space.” – CHRISTINA GARTEN Owner, Christina’s Complete Clean

Whether you work from home or go into the office, you are likely busier than ever these days. If you have kids, they may be e-learning or attending classes in person, either way things are probably a little hectic. With so much going on in your world, it can feel overwhelming to come home at the end of the day and keep your house clean or spend your weekends deep cleaning. Christina Garten, President/CEO of Christina’s Complete Clean and Circle City Cleaning Crew, says she understands and can help. Christina’s Complete Clean is a locally owned house cleaning company that serves Carmel, Westfield, Zionsville, and the north side of Indianapolis. “People are home more now than ever,” Garten notes. “Not only do they deserve a premier cleaning service to help alleviate the load of juggling home, kids, school, and work, having a clean space creates extra time for family, and less stress on everyone. Let’s face it. We’re making more messes at home, (maybe companies will start reimbursing for housecleaning – since they are not paying for an office building)!” When spending so much more time at home, safety is also likely a concern and Garten says Christina’s Complete Clean can help make your home safer. “The bottom line is having a cleaning service also provides the utmost safety to everyone in the home, kids and pets included. A clean space is a healthy space, and a healthy space is a safe space.” If you prefer to clean your own home or are just trying to keep it clean between professional visits, Garten has some great house cleaning tips for families:

1. GET THE WHOLE FAMILY INVOLVED. “Like I tell my kids, I don’t live here alone” Garten says. “I didn’t create this mess alone. You could set a timer and make it a race or have a contest like best towel folding!”

2. REMEMBER, CLEANING IS A PROCESS. It involves three major steps: First, The Pick Up. Second, The Cleaning. Third and finally, The Disinfecting. Christina says, “We typically complete the last two steps and come in and clean after our homeowners/clients have picked up. Let us know if you’d like a bottle of disinfectant, or recommendations.”

3. ENJOY THE PROCESS. Don’t forget to select a good play list to motivate you and open up the windows for fresh air. (If you don’t enjoy the process... well, call Christina’s Complete Clean!)

It’s also worth mentioning that Christina’s Complete Clean employees strive to make sure their clients are pleased with their work. They work to build solid relationships through the initial estimate process, and really getting to know the client and their home and family needs. According to Garten, “Every home is different, and it helps to really get to know the client and understand what their needs and expectations are in the very beginning – then, sealing the deal with delivering on what we said we were going to do.” Request a quote from Cristina’s Complete Clean at (317) 564-4244, CHRISTINA’S COMPLETE CLEAN or check out their website at 317.564.4244 christinascompleteclean.com. EXECUTIVE HOMES:

Executive Homes Celebrates 25th Anniversary With Outstanding Home-A-Rama Home by Matt Keating / photos by Graham Photography and Collective Alternative

5 0 H AV E N

After building solid relationships with Central Indiana clients for 25 years, Executive Homes was proud to showcase their newest home in Holliday Farms for this year’s Home-A-Rama. “There are so many great details in this house,” Pete Gray president and founder of Executive Homes said. “Many guests loved the livability of the home, and talked about the covered porches. There are actually four, including the front porch! The outside living space off of the dining room, great room, and master suite are perfect extensions of the home.” The real gem of the house, according to Gray, is the master suite. “There’s a great coffee/wine bar, the private balcony, and an amazing spa-like bathroom,” he said. “I don’t think too many people say they want to spend more time in the bathroom, but this one might make you think twice.” ATTENTION TO DETAIL The success of Executive Homes over the last quarter century can be traced to the amount of detail the family-owned business puts into each custom home they build. “When we started in 1995, we not only set out to build great houses and fantastic relationships with our clients, it was also important for us to offer timeless design, livability, quality and value,” Gray said. “Our team personally oversees every step of your home building process, while keeping the line of communication open with you to ensure your home matches your vision and what we’ve promised.” With decades of building and remodeling experience, Gray’s daily direction has led Executive Homes to be among Central Indiana’s most respected and awarded custom homebuilders. And, more important than the accolades, their clients often become like family. “We understand that your home is not only one of the largest investments you make, but also the most personal. We take that very seriously,” Gray said. “Our craftsmanship is always on display. We’ve worked with the same trade partners for years, and their commitment and high quality is clear in the finished product.”

Executive Homes builds in several Central Indiana communities, assists clients in finding the right property and will also build on your lot. “It’s important to find just the right spot to call home,” Gray said. “We enjoy working with families to answer all of their questions and select the perfect spot to build their new home.” To Gray, there is no such thing as a stupid question when it comes to building a house. Open communication is part of the building process, and while Executive Homes has 25 years of home building experience, for many clients, it’s their first time going through the process. The Executive Homes team strives to let homeowners be as involved as they want to be. To get started on your remodeling or homebuilding project, or for a personal tour of the 2020 Home-A-Rama house call Executive Homes at (317) 919-7275 or visit their website at executivehomesindy.com.

EXECUTIVE HOMES’ 2020 Home-A-Rama house features a classic design with modern details – including expert craftsmanship, high-end finishes and four, (yes, four) covered porches.

HOME ENTERTAINMENT

DIGITIAL SIGHT & SOUND can help bring the cinema to your family with a true home theater.

DIGITAL SIGHT & SOUND:

THE REAL HOME THEATER is Making a Comeback! by Christy Heitger-Ewing 5 2 H AV E N

“It’s such a great family event, going to the theatre, and they were closed for so long that clients began to contact us saying, ‘Hey, we want to turn our finished storage space into a real home theatre.’” – RAY RICE Owner, Digital Sight & Sound

Over the last decade, homeowners have been moving away from building a dedicated home theatre and instead have opted to create a large open space that incorporates high-quality surround sound & comfy couch seating that can be enjoyed by a large group of people. It seemed ideal because if people wanted cozy, they stayed in and if they were in the mood for a dark theatre experience, they could just head to their local cinema. When COVID-19 hit last spring, however, that was no longer an option as theatres shuttered. Over time, folks began to miss the movie-going experience. “It’s such a great family event, going to the theatre, and they were closed for so long that clients began to contact us saying, ‘Hey, we want to turn our finished storage space into a real home theatre,’” says Ray Rice, owner of Digital

Sight & Sound. “People are definitely shifting back toward front projection screens with theatre seating.” According to Rice, the most recent product they have been installing is the Dolby Atmos, the latest system for providing a true home theatre experience. Options vary, of course, depending on the size of the room. “Some people take a basement spare bedroom and convert it into an intimate theatre that can seat four,” says Rice, noting that more and more people are getting away from having an entertainment or great room where the surround is off to the side. “They want a separate room that can be totally dark for an immersive home theater.” To bring the cinematic experience to your family with a true home theater, contact Digital Sight & Sound at (317) 848-0101 or visit dssindy.com.

FLOORING

ACo:

GET THE PERFECT FLOORS:

ACo Brings You

Carlisle Wide Plank Flooring by Tracy Kemp / photos courtesy of Carlisle Wide Plank Floors

5 4 H AV E N

When it comes to your home’s design, you want to find the perfect tile backsplash, counters that suit your design flawlessly, cabinets that are the exact right shade. So why settle for wood floors that aren’t quite what you had in mind? Are you looking for wood flooring that is truly exceptional and durable? Wood flooring that is sourced in the U.S.? Wood flooring with less interruption in the design flow and a more consistent grain color? How about wood flooring that is environmentally friendly? A truly unique product, Carlisle Wide Plank Floors offers custom wood floors and an unmatched experience. As the only company in Indianapolis to partner with Carlisle, ACo is excited to offer this exclusive custom flooring. For more than 50 years, Carlisle has been producing wide wood planks from slow-growth, old trees grown in cold climates here in the US. Carlisle also uses a unique milling process that utilizes the center cut, or heart, of the tree for the most durable and consistent vertical grain color. This means there are fewer defects and mill marks, plus less warping and cupping over time. The up to 20-inch wide planks also create a wood floor with fewer seams and joints to create a dramatic look and superior quality to flooring for your home. IT GETS BETTER. Carlisle says, “If you can dream it, we can make it.” So do you see something you like online or in ACo’s showroom but want it in a slightly different color? In a different species? No problem: 70% of all wood floors Carlisle creates are fully custom made. And custom wood flooring with more options means fewer installation restrictions. Want your wood floor over concrete? Plywood? Radiant heat? In a waterfront environment? Check. Check. Check. And check.

AND YET, IT GETS BETTER. Don’t want to create your own design? Carlisle knows it can be hard to start from scratch, so they have you covered there, too, with a number of collections to choose from. Keara Miller, with Carlisle, says their collections are like “a menu at a restaurant” because you can choose from among Carlisle’s most popular colors and species. And they mean it. Wood choices include ash, barnwood, birch, cherry, chestnut, eastern white pine, hickory, red oak, white oak, walnut, and more. There’s also patterned, luxury vinyl plank, reclaimed pine flooring, and prefinished hardwood flooring. CAN YOU BELIEVE IT GETS EVEN BETTER? IT DOES. Carlisle is also concerned about the environment and respects nature. So Carlisle works only with landowners and sawyers who don’t practice clear-cutting. “We all recognize that clear cutting has a negative impact environmentally and for our business. We want to ensure that our forests, and our floors will be around for generations to come.” In addition, the stains and finishes Carlisle uses are all environmentally friendly, not to mention beautiful and easy to care for. The company’s prefinished wood flooring also has no measurable VOC’s (volatile organic compounds) and no urea formaldehyde is added during the manufacturing process. ACo is proud to partner with Carlisle to bring you custom wide plank flooring that is not only beautiful, but also safe and environmentally friendly. Stop by the ACo showroom at Hub & Spoke in Fishers or visit them online at liveaco.com to get inspired!

OLD TOWN DESIGN GROUP:

MAKING MODERN A MUST

by Christy Heitger-Ewing / photos by Graham Photography

The moment you step inside this 3-level, 7,600 sq. ft. home in Holliday Farms, you will fall in love with the living room’s three-panel sliding pocket door that connects to the outdoor living space. The glass door is massive in size, with each panel measuring 4' x 10'. Because each panel goes into the wall, there is zero barrier from the living room to the outdoor space. And that outdoor space is key, especially these days. “The door provides a continuation where outside is in and inside is out,” says Liz Yust, Director of Sales & Marketing with Old Town Design Group. The outdoor patio has seating, television, a grilling station, and a custom fire table that lengthens the number of months for enjoying the outdoor space. When this house was designed, it was a year prior to the pandemic, but the OTDG team incorporated something that everyone has been asking for over the past six months – ample natural light. They did this by installing 10 ft. tall fixed frame windows in the dining room that go from floor to ceiling, allowing massive amounts of natural light to flow in. “If you think back to the beginning of the pandemic when it was snowy and dreary, the need to see nature was so important,” says Yust. 5 6 H AV E N

When you bask in the sunlight, it brightens the soul, lifts the mood, and warms the body. “People are excited about seeing those windows!” Yust continues. “We now seem to have a greater understanding for those things we need that maybe we didn’t see before.” The 5-bedroom home has both a master suite and a guest suite on the main floor, an upstairs lounge located between the two kids’ bedrooms, and a large basement with a game area and separate living space. And though there is a resurgence of the home office now that everyone is working remotely, clients are also requesting additional living space, whether that’s in the form of a loft or a finished basement. “People just want somewhere to go to watch TV

that’s not in your master bedroom,” says Yust. Because the house was largely designed for entertaining, it has a working pantry/scullery directly behind the kitchen. “You’ve got the ability to chop, prep, and throw dishes into the sink but not be in the same space as your guests,” says Yust. From the design side, they did some unique ceiling plays in different rooms of the house. For instance, they installed floating wooden tiles in the living room ceiling, and in the master bedroom, they have drywall wrap that they call “cloud lighting,” both of which are designed to introduce texture and light into a room in different ways. Old Town Design Group has been considered a craftsmen cottage builder by many, but those who

have toured this house are pleasantly surprised to see something so modern. “We’ve always had modern style in our repertoire” Yust says. “We strive to make our homes reflect the clients we have the privilege to build for.” Old Town Design Group is located at 1132 Rangeline Road, Carmel, IN 46032.
