The HavaGood Times 3

Thank you from Tim Denny

Our theme for our 25th Haverford Township Day is, Our Future Looks Bright. We have a new Township Manager, Dave Burman. We are working on a Comprehensive Plan to guide the township for the next 20 years. And the Board of Commissioners has committed to investing five million dollars over the next four years in upgrading our parks; the largest park investment in township history. With the township in good hands and moving in such a positive direction, this seems like a good time for me to step down. I plan to retire this fall after Haverford Twp. Day. I have had a great run for almost 40 years. I am forever grateful to the hundreds of people I have worked and coordinated with over the years, to help make our community a special place to live and play. I started working here in 1980. At that time, I was a one-man department. I was hired under a federal grant (CETA) to organize the use of our many ball fields. Fortunately, when the grant expired the township hired me as a regular employee. Since that time Parks & Recreation has grown into a multi-faceted department recognized locally and throughout the state for its excellence and diversity.

None of this happened by itself. It takes a great team effort, perseverance and hard work. It also requires endorsement from township officials and the Park Board, along with a spirit of cooperation with the school district and the churches, youth sports, businesses and volunteers in our community.

Tim Denny and family at 40th Life. Be In It. Day.

A lot has happened in Recreation since 1980. In addition to the hundreds of programs and activities we now offer, which thousands of residents of all ages and abilities enjoy; we’ve acquired open space through grants, created The HavaGood Times, Merry Place, Life. Be in it. Day, Haverford Twp. Day, the Skate Park, The Heritage Festival, built the Darby Creek and Pennsy Trails, the trails and fields at Haverford Reserve, the Dog Park, Freedom Playground and designed the nationally recognized, LEED Certified CREC. We’ve also worked with civic groups and state agencies to fund park and trail improvements.

Andy Lewis, President of the Board, proclaimed the 40th Life. Be In It. Day, at Merry Place on August 2nd, on behalf of the Board of Commissioners.

A special thanks to Brian Barrett, my teammate for 35 years.

Because of my time here, I believe even more in the power and beauty of parks and recreation. It is core to who we are and is crucial to making us a strong, healthier community where each person is valued. Our Future Looks Bright.

The HavaGood Times is published in January, May and September. All costs are covered by user fees and the support of our sponsors.

More than anything, I wish to thank my family for their understanding. They accepted that the long days, night meetings and working weekends were part of my job; if we wanted a better community for all.

Life. Be In It. Tim Denny
