Capital Improvement Plan The $2.5 Million capital campaign that the Board of Commissioners approved began in 2019. The funding delivered much needed upgrades to parks throughout the Township. These upgrades are significant investments in our parks and are very popular with the residents. The following projects were completed in 2019. • Tennis courts resurfaced and new fencing at Paddock (4), Westgate (2), and Coopertown (1) • Pickle ball courts installed at Westgate (4) • New Playground equipment installed at Chatham Glen, Grasslyn and Llanerch Park

• Football field regraded and seeded, backstop replaced at Veterans Field • Parking areas paved at Hilltop Park • Pathways resurfaced at Chatham Glen, Bailey, Coopertown, Hilltop, Paddock, Grange, Merwood • Sidewalks replaced at Grange, Westgate, Thompson Nature Park, Chatham Glen, Elwell, Coopertown, Bailey, Hilltop, Paddock, Llanerch Park, Richland Farms, Normandy Park Projects planned for 2020 include: • Replacing the turf at Haverford Reserve • Replacing surfacing at Freedom Playground • Replacing lighting at Veterans Field and Haverford Reserve • Resurface basketball court at Merwood Park

Understanding insects is a small step in understanding the world we live in. Join Alan Samel of DCVA, an Aquatic Ecologist and Entomologist, as he exposes some of the subtleties of the insects we live with.

Calling all Girl Scout Troop Leaders

Haverford Reserve is a great place to explore the outdoors close to home. Whether it’s providing your girls with their first experince in nature, preparing them for a future camping trip, working towards outdoor badge requirements, or furthering their understanding of the natural world, we can create a program to meet your needs. Betsy Motten, longtime Girl Scout Leader extraordinaire, will work with you to develop and lead the program. Fee: $5 per girl, minimum of $60 for 1.5 hours. Trail News

CREC to Holm Trail Extension Trailblazing Hike Sat., 1/11 (9am-noon)

A great route from the CREC through the Haverford Reserve & Grace Trail, into Radnor. While it will eventually go to Ithan Valley Park, this will be a “working” hike to clear the Holm property easement and scope how to make it a great trail. Wear a good pair of sneakers or boots, gloves, and bring loper or small pruner. The walk will be 2-3 miles mostly flat, but be prepared for narrow, sloped or rocky trail segments. Meet at the CREC lobby.

8th Annual “Philadelphia Western Suburbs Trail Summit”

Sat., 2/1 (8:30am-11:30am) Location: CREC Trail advocates review progress, identify opportunities, and help Haverford and surrounding communities plan to build trail connections to improve walking and biking. Residents of Radnor, Lower Merion, Newtown, Marple, Springfield and Upper Darby are encouraged to attend. Sponsored by Haverford Twp. Scout Saturday

All township Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, Brownies, Daisies and their family and friends are invited to walk in the woods and enjoy free hot dogs and hot chocolate at the Meadow Campground at Haverford Reserve.

Pennsy Trail

The extension of the Pennsy Trail across Manoa Road is slated to start in Fall 2020. A bridge will be constructed over Manoa Road and the trail will be extended to the end of Vernon Road by West Chester Pike. This trail allows residents from the Llanerch area to access the center of town. This will make pedestrian access to the Library, Middle School, Senior High and the YMCA much safer. The funding for the trail extension was provided by a grant from the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission.

Think Green DCVA Annual Meeting Sun., 3/1 (8am-3pm)

The public is invited to attend the annual meeting of the Darby Creek Valley Association held at the CREC. For the past 35 years DCVA, a non-profit volunteer organization, has worked to improve the quality of the Darby Creek and the surrounding watershed. DCVA coordinates the annual Darby Creek Clean-Up held at various locations in the 31 municipalities along the creek.

Renewable Energy & Environmental Expo Sat., 3/7 (11am-2pm)

Want to help tackle climate change or live more sustainably? Join State Representatives Mike Zabel and Greg Vitali, Penn Environment, and the Havertown EAC for this expo. You will have the chance to meet local renewable energy and energy efficiency providers; learn from neighbors who have bought renewable, installed solar, and drive electric; and hear from elected officials about how we can tackle climate change at the state and local level. Rain Garden Workshop Sat., 3/21 (9am-Noon)

This workshop will teach you how to build and maintain a Rain Garden yourself and how to help build rain gardens in your community. You can sign up for later opportunities to gain hands-on experience by helping build our late spring rain gardens or apprenticing by assessing potential locations and designing rain gardens. Presented by Darby Creek Valley Association, Eastern Delaware County Stormwater Collaborative and Hav-a-Rain Garden who have designed and built more than 60 rain gardens in the region at parks, libraries and private properties. School Field Trips

We would like to host your school group during the 2019-2020 school year at the Haverford Reserve; a site with 124 acres of open space, two first-order streams, four water retention basins and nativegrass meadow. We offer 1.5 hours of education tailored towards the STEAM requirements in addition to free time at Freedom Playground. Full Day Summer Camp

Haverford Recreation offers a full day program (8am-6pm) for ages 6-12. The program begins Monday, June 29 and continues through August 14. Information on times and fees will be available on our website in early March. Registration opens online March 9 at 8am.

The Recreation Department offers summer sports for boys and girls in basketball, lacrosse, soccer, ultimate frisbee, and tennis and for girls in volleyball and field hockey. A full list of dates, times, and fees will be on our website in March and registration opens online March 30.
